- 0:00Welcome to Sober Talk. I'm Dennis and I've lived
- 0:03experience of alcohol. If you or anyone you know is
- 0:06struggling with alcohol, please call Alcoholics Anonymous on

- 0:19I'll just run through the preamble of Alcoholics
- 0:21Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is a
- 0:24fellowship of men and women. We share the experience
- 0:27strengthen up with each other then, but so there come problems
- 0:31and help others to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:34The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop
- 0:37drinking. There are no Jews of faith for a
- 0:39membership. We are self supporting through
- 0:41our own contributions. A is not allied with any sect,
- 0:45denomination, politics, organization or institution.
- 0:49Does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses or
- 0:53oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is stairs
- 0:56open up whether Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:01And we've got arguing with it and Paula and Sharon my system.
- 1:07And since the Sharon's been having 20.
- 1:08Years up and. Just seeing the emergency, so.
- 1:12But Adrianna, I'm an alcoholic, three years so, but they were
- 1:15send the 4th already Thursday. Thank you, I agree and.
- 1:18My name Paula. I'm an alcoholic and sobriety
- 1:22tonight, the 28th of July. 2018 and my Home group is Henley
- 1:29Beach, 12 Promises and Sunday Night Exeter.
- 1:32Thank you, Paul. Hi.
- 1:34My name is Sharon. I'm an.
- 1:35Alcoholic I've. Got nearly three years up and
- 1:38surprised. And my time.
- 1:39Group is poured out the right. OK.
- 1:43Wait out then you know how it works.
- 1:46Preliminary. A little bit of the chapter
- 1:49which we do in an all meeting away.
- 1:51I think I agree. I see.
- 1:54Fortunately, Chapter 5, How it Works.
- 1:56Rarely have we seen it first failing.
- 1:58It was, sorry, signed out. But in here they're covering
- 2:00people who cannot hold or really give themselves to be simply pro
- 2:04there. You don't know whether they were
- 2:05constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves.
- 2:08They are unfortunates. They are not at fault.
- 2:10They seem to have been gone that way.
- 2:12They are naturally incapable of graphing and developing A manner
- 2:15of English demands rigorous honesty.
- 2:18The answers are both an average there are those, too, who
- 2:20started from grave emotional and mental disorders.
- 2:23Many of them do recover if they had the capacity.
- 2:26To be honest, our story is closed in a general way.
- 2:29What we used to be like, what happened and what we are like
- 2:31now. If you decided you want what we
- 2:33have and are willing to go to any lakes to get it, and you
- 2:36were ready to take certain steps and some of these we bought, we
- 2:40thought we could find it easier to solve the way, but we could
- 2:42not. With all the osmos at our
- 2:44command, we gave you to be furious and Sarah, from the very
- 2:46start some of us have tried the whole world where all that is.
- 2:50And there was always Neil. Until we let go, absolutely.
- 2:53Remember that we deal with alcohol, cunning, baffling,
- 2:55powerful, without help. It's too much for us.
- 2:58There is one who has all power. That one is God.
- 3:00May you find it now I believe that the bell is nothing.
- 3:04We're still at the turning point.
- 3:05We are seeing protection in care with complete abandon.
- 3:08Here, in the steps we took, we suggested as a program of
- 3:11recovery One. We will powers over alcohol that
- 3:14had a lot of it become unmanageable.
- 3:18Tend to believe that a power greater than ourselves could
- 3:21restore us the sentence. Right, right.
- 3:24We were sitting down to. Turn out well and a large under
- 3:27the care of God is under certain.
- 3:29Could you say the right someone fight?
- 3:32It's. His hair and four made a certain
- 3:34feel. The small inventory of ourselves
- 3:375. Go to ourselves and to another
- 3:39human being. Exactly our longs.
- 3:42Six. We're entirely ready to have God
- 3:43remove all these defects of character.
- 3:46So humbly asked him to remove our school company.
- 3:48It may rest of all persons we've helped and became willing to
- 3:51make amends to the law. Nine.
- 3:53We made the recommends to such people where the possible,
- 3:56except for him to do so with injure them or others 10.
- 3:59Continue to take a personal inventory and where were they
- 4:02wrong? Hopefully 11 sought for a prayer
- 4:04and meditation to improve our conscious compact with God as we
- 4:07understood Him, playing only some knowledge of His will for
- 4:10us, and with all to carry that out well.
- 4:12Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we
- 4:15try to carry this message to Alcoholics and practice these
- 4:18principles in all our affairs. Many of us explained what an
- 4:21order I can't go through. Not be discouraged.
- 4:24No one of others has been able to maintain anything like
- 4:26perfect adherence to these principles.
- 4:28We're not states. The point is that we are willing
- 4:30to grow along spiritual lines. The principles we get is down
- 4:33the guides to progress, the kind spiritual progress rather than
- 4:37spiritual perfection. Our description of the
- 4:39alcoholic, the chapter to the angle State, and our personal
- 4:41adventures before and after make clear three cousins ideas a that
- 4:46we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
- 4:49The old emotion How could have relieved our alcoholism see that
- 4:53God could handle it if it was sought good thank.
- 4:57You and that was well done my name.
- 4:59Is Adrian. And I'm an alcoholic.
- 5:00I say I'm an alcoholic because it's part of the seclusion to my
- 5:06drinking problem is admitting that I've got a problem.
- 5:09Yeah, well, I I had drank for 25 years.
- 5:18It seemed to me that at the start that it was a wonderful
- 5:21way to escape. I found people at situations
- 5:26difficult and anxiety inducing it.
- 5:30And when I drank all the, the fear went away.
- 5:33And yeah, I thought, oh, here's the real me at last.
- 5:39Yeah, this suave guy with such yeah, it wasn't true.
- 5:48Well by the end it was crashed cars and and Carlson.
- 5:55I mean feeling of dread and impending dream that wouldn't go
- 6:02away. Yeah, I I got sober in 2020 just
- 6:09before Kobe. My my first a a meeting was.
- 6:16A couple of years before that I admitted to my pain specialist
- 6:20how much I was drinking on top of the the method that he was
- 6:25prescribing me for chronic pain. And he said me got me to to to
- 6:33to draw hell. Quixma and I went to an A a
- 6:36meeting there and yeah, well, if I had to admit I had a problem,
- 6:41I mean. I was a wreck.
- 6:44I was on the stage where I was always very disappointed to wake
- 6:50up in the morning, in the morning, and yeah, so yeah,
- 6:54that's right, me out. And I went to a couple of other
- 7:00meetings after that and I didn't.
- 7:06I didn't mean I was an alcoholic, but.
- 7:09That wasn't enough. I didn't identify with what I
- 7:14was hearing in those meetings. I'm always carrying such a a
- 7:18weight of despair and cynicism and business and just, yeah,
- 7:23really bad attitude. That's I I just couldn't be
- 7:28bothered to continue to come to meetings and see if it would
- 7:31actually work. No, I.
- 7:41Yeah, So I continued to drink for not two years until I was
- 7:47about to be thrown out of my while out of the place I was
- 7:53living, the kinds, the last few people in the world who still
- 8:00care about me because I've made. I isolated myself when I've made
- 8:06enemies of friends. Yeah, they took me in and they
- 8:15made sure I got the meetings every day and things.
- 8:22Yeah, because I was sick and tired of being sick and tired
- 8:27and because I was there day in, day out, eventually dawned on
- 8:32me. That's that that what everybody
- 8:35ended me. I had.
- 8:36I could have to. And yeah, what I found was
- 8:40people who were able to non drink and be happy about it.
- 8:45And yeah, when when it was suggested to me by a friend
- 8:51couple of years before I got server that I should not drink
- 8:55since I've admitted I'm an alcoholic.
- 8:59You know, I just looked at him like he suggested I take a sword
- 9:05and cut off my my, my head and then.
- 9:08On my other hand, somehow with an adult story, it was it's just
- 9:13cool and horrible and and ridiculous and stupid and wrong
- 9:18and broken. I couldn't.
- 9:20Yeah, that really was what it seemed like, the idea of not
- 9:28being able, not drinking. Like it was just impossible.
- 9:31I couldn't do anything without a drink, but when I was.
- 9:38I smashed and glinting about on a walking stick and when I was
- 9:48being brought to meetings daily, yeah, as I was saying, I found
- 10:00people who had something that I wanted.
- 10:03I was able to admit to myself that I wanted.
- 10:06And I was. They gave me a glib of hope that
- 10:10I could get it. The head was they were, they
- 10:13were comfortable in their own skin.
- 10:15They didn't leave anything to be, okay to cope, to flourish.
- 10:23They didn't need any outside substance.
- 10:28They didn't even seem to need anybody else's approval.
- 10:33I mean, yeah, the people I mean are very inspiring.
- 10:39That's it. And yeah, when it was said
- 10:47yesterday do something about a A's program, I went okay.
- 10:59I can take suggestions and I did.
- 11:05I found someone who particularly had what I wanted and then I
- 11:08could relate to and this dude used to just radiate color and I
- 11:13was at that point, the opposite. And yeah, I'm I'm on stage so if
- 11:24you'd be my sponsor And he said can you pray?
- 11:32It doesn't matter if I don't know what to do, because I'd
- 11:36been a call atheist. You know, Millicent very calling
- 11:41on Christian chat rooms on the Internet, yeah.
- 11:50And he said, no, it doesn't matter if you don't know what to
- 11:53Can you pray? And I wonder God, can you
- 11:56Immediately. That's the man we were wearing.
- 11:59I don't know. It's just about him though.
- 12:00So Cody go coded here and there were the meetings.
- 12:08Well, all of a sudden. So you mean.
- 12:15I mean, I needed something because, yeah, my head, I could
- 12:19never cope with it. I had to drink to put it for my
- 12:22feelings until the drink wore off.
- 12:24And then I drink again for more further.
- 12:26I couldn't stand being me so. Without a drink, I needed
- 12:31something and there's some kind of magic that goes on in the
- 12:35meetings and it just calms down. I mean, even if I'm bored or
- 12:41annoyed or I think the speaker is full of it, it still works
- 12:46just amazing in itself. Yeah, that's my my sponsor.
- 12:55Yeah, he took me down the beach and.
- 12:58We sat in the ocean and thought about philosophy and
- 13:04spirituality and I was quite skeptical, took him a few weeks
- 13:10to told me around to the point where I could actually start
- 13:14putting the steps into my life. But yeah, between the fact that
- 13:21I wondered what I had when what he had rather and.
- 13:28Or something. He pointed out that my own way
- 13:32of looking at the world and thinking of things had got me to
- 13:35a pretty bad place and I might need to try something else.
- 13:42So keep getting and doing what you've always done, and you'll
- 13:46keep getting what you've always got.
- 13:50Hi. Reminding me right?
- 13:56And so. Yeah, yeah, I I mean, it sounds
- 14:06weird to me. Still saying out loud and I
- 14:08still work. And these days I do it on a
- 14:10daily basis, twice a day. But I got down on my knees and
- 14:17handed myself over to God. And that's, I mean, in this day
- 14:22and age, this post creature society, this very weird thing
- 14:26to do, really. But.
- 14:30And at the time, it felt kind of like throwing out and throwing
- 14:34myself out of an aeroplane and not knowing you, playing a
- 14:36parachute. But yeah, it turns out that that
- 14:53God can do for me what I can't do for myself.
- 14:57Because I've gone without a drink for over three years and I
- 15:16well, I'm happy about it. For a star, I'm just been a much
- 15:23better place than I could have imagined.
- 15:26Before. Because yeah, that's what I
- 15:32seems to do. Takes people like me who are
- 15:38broken and helpless, couldn't stop drinking, and turns them
- 15:44back into, well, turns them not back, but turns them into brand
- 15:48new flourishing humans. I so yeah.
- 15:55What happened after after that was I about my sponsor and I
- 16:03went through the The nightmare, the horror movie that used to
- 16:07play in my head all the time. All the stuff in the past that
- 16:13used to just come up and smack me in the face all the time.
- 16:15The fears that I draw out of the future and and all the hatreds
- 16:21and resentments and. Integral things that had
- 16:24happened and not sounded dumb and went through them all and
- 16:29had a clear idea in this new perspective that a spiritual
- 16:39approach to things gives, and it was difficult and painful, but
- 16:46afterwards I felt like a new man coming away.
- 16:52Stress levels went down. Way I was the one that I'm
- 16:56choking on my own cortisol and adrenaline like they used to
- 16:58every day. And because of all my pain
- 17:03levels went down. I was able to go and get some
- 17:06physio. I wanted to get my leg back, my
- 17:08leg that I ruined in a drunken car crash, actually in 2010.
- 17:13Yeah. So yeah, I'm going to say I had
- 17:17a better position than I could have ever imagined.
- 17:23And what it's like now is everything is greased, this
- 17:33spiritual meal. Everything is part of this
- 17:36journey of recovery of learning and growing and we are a bit of
- 17:42a more useful Adrian and and like I get to get to be like
- 17:49it's all. Do cool things.
- 17:51Things that I had me ever done while I was too busy hiding from
- 17:55the world and drinking and drinking and going out and
- 17:58making a nuisance of myself and then waking up and gagging in my
- 18:02own shame and going back to hiding and drinking again.
- 18:07Yeah, these days I get to go out and meet people and do things
- 18:12and going see the pro wrestling. Signed up a smallish mountain.
- 18:22Had to repeat a pound and travel all over the place and and not
- 18:28be held back. At least not completely held
- 18:32back by my own fears all the time.
- 18:36You know, still have progress to make considering to start with I
- 18:41was practically unable to leave the house without a drink.
- 18:45I've come quite a ways and yeah. And this, this method for
- 18:51dealing with the things that come up that made me angry.
- 18:57There's a certain amount of sitting with these feelings and
- 19:00then there's a process right in the mouth of kind of things in
- 19:05the story, I'm sure. Who did what?
- 19:08Yeah, Who did whatever. What if I'm putting these how to
- 19:12say to me and what part I played in that and see where I'm
- 19:16putting my own. Priorities my own I emphasis and
- 19:24in this this process of self reflection and prayer and
- 19:28meditation. My my God isn't religious by the
- 19:30way it's it's purely personal individual thing as it is with a
- 19:34lot of OA members it's yeah but in this in this process I mean I
- 19:39find such peace. I mean I used to have to take
- 19:43drugs to feel this peaceful and. I get to, yeah, just do normal
- 19:51things and be relaxed about it and enjoy life and sort of,
- 19:59yeah, with a bit of stay, listen, hanging out with felony
- 20:07recovering, recovering Alcoholics, I find that I'm very
- 20:13thankfully able to not pick up a drink.
- 20:17One day at a time. We have local meetings for the
