- 0:50to the Elon Musk podcast. I'm your host will Walden.
- 0:53And on this episode, we're going to be talking about, Elon musk's
- 0:56Twitter. I want to move that has sparked
- 0:58debate in frustration. Twitter has removed labels
- 1:01describing Global media organizations as government
- 1:04funded or state-affiliated. This comes after Elon Musk.
- 1:08Twitter's owner, started, stripping, blue verification.
- 1:11Check marks from accounts, that don't pay a monthly fee.
- 1:15Now NPR in the US was among the It's no longer labeled having it
- 1:20announced. Last week is decision to stop
- 1:22using Twitter. All together.
- 1:24NPR was initially designated as state-affiliated, media a term
- 1:29used to identify media, Outlets controlled or heavily influenced
- 1:33by authoritarian governments like Russia and China.
- 1:36The label was later changed to a government-funded media but NPR
- 1:41which receives only a small fraction of its funding from the
- 1:43government found the label misleading.
- 1:46Now Canadian broadcasting Corp. And Swedish public radio.
- 1:50Also decided to quit weeding and the government funded labels
- 1:53vanished on Friday. State-affiliated tags on media
- 1:57accounts such as Russia's Sputnik and Artie and China's
- 2:00xingu were removed as well now on Thursday, but your Twitter is
- 2:04high-profile, users lost the blue, check marks that verify
- 2:08their identity and distinguish them from imposters now.
- 2:12Twitter had approximately 300,000 verified users under the
- 2:17original blue checkmark System, including journalists athletes
- 2:21and public figures and the check signify that the account is
- 2:24verified by Twitter to be authentic in Among The Hope
- 2:28high-profile users who lost their blue checks or Beyonce.
- 2:32Pope Francis, Oprah Winfrey and former President.
- 2:36Donald Trump. In the cost of retaining, the
- 2:38marks range from eight dollars a month for individual web users
- 2:43to a starting price of a thousand dollars monthly to
- 2:46verify an organization. Is $50 monthly for each
- 2:50affiliate or employee account. Now, unlike the previous blue
- 2:53check system, Twitter does not verify individual accounts, many
- 2:58celebrities, including basketball Star LeBron James
- 3:01author, Stephen King, and Star Trek's.
- 3:02William Shatner have expressed frustration at joining the new
- 3:05verification system, although their accounts, displayed blue
- 3:09checks on Thursday King claimed, he hadn't paid for the service
- 3:12and in response, must tweeted that he had personally paying
- 3:15for King Shatner, and James is verification.
- 3:19And singer. Dionne Warwick, criticized the
- 3:21site's verification system, stating it was an absolute mess
- 3:26Warwick, lost her blue, check on Thursday.
- 3:27And previously, vowed not to pay for Twitter blue, believing the
- 3:31monthly fee, could be better, spent elsewhere in the removal
- 3:34of blue checks from government agencies nonprofits and public
- 3:37service accounts has raised concerns that Twitter could lose
- 3:40its status as a platform for accurate up-to-date information,
- 3:44from authentic sources, especially in emergencies.
- 3:48Now it remains Is unclear how Twitter grants goal checks for
- 3:51verified organizations, and gray checks for government
- 3:54organizations and their Affiliates?
- 3:56And in an effort to clear up confusion the official Twitter
- 3:59account of the New York City Government, which lost its blue,
- 4:02check tweeted that it was an authentic account representing
- 4:06the city's government. However, a newly created spoof
- 4:09account without a blue check disagreed.
- 4:12Falsely claiming to be the only authentic account representing
- 4:15New York City Government at another spoof account,
- 4:18impersonating. Pope Pope Francis, chimed in as
- 4:20well, Travis Browne a berlin-based developer of
- 4:23software for tracking social media found that fewer than 5%
- 4:27of Legacy. Verified accounts had paid to
- 4:29join Twitter blue as of Thursday.
- 4:31And although the new system has upset some high-profile users
- 4:35and pleased, some right-wing figures and musk fans.
- 4:39It's not obvious Revenue stream for the platform, which was long
- 4:43relying on Advertising to make money.
- 4:46Now, digital intelligence platform similarweb, analyzed
- 4:50desktop signups for Twitter, blue and detected only 116,000
- 4:54confirmed signups last month with an $8 for or $11 per month.
- 5:00Doesn't represent a significant Revenue Source at this time.
- 5:03In the analysis did not include accounts purchase Via mobile
- 5:06apps. Now, since purchasing Twitter
- 5:08for forty four billion dollars in October musk has been trying
- 5:11to boost the platform's revenue by encouraging, more users to
- 5:15pay for a Premium subscription. However, this move also
- 5:19highlights his belief that blue verification marks have become
- 5:23an undeserved or corrupt, status symbol for elite personalities,
- 5:27news reporters and others who receive verification for free
- 5:31under Twitter's previous leadership.
- 5:32Now, Twitter announced blue, check marks around 14 years ago,
- 5:36to protect celebrities from a person aiders and help curb
- 5:39misinformation from fake accounts.
- 5:40Now, most Legacy blue checks were not household names
- 5:44including politicians In lesser known journalist from small,
- 5:48Publications worldwide. And what of musk's initial
- 5:51actions after acquiring Twitter was to launch a service offering
- 5:54blue checks to anyone willing to pay eight dollars a month.
- 5:58However, service was quickly flooded with imposter accounts,
- 6:02impersonating Brands, like Nintendo Eli, Lilly Tesla, and
- 6:06SpaceX consequently Twitter or temporarily suspended the
- 6:10service mere days after its launch and the revamp service
- 6:13costs $8 a month for web users and As for iPhone or Android
- 6:19app, users subscribers are Primus fewer ads, the ability to
- 6:23post longer videos and additional benefits.
- 6:26And despite these perks, the new system has not gained widespread
- 6:29adoption and its long-term impact on Twitter's revenue and
- 6:33user experience remains uncertain.
- 6:35The removal of labels from Global media organization.
- 6:38Has also fueled debates around transparency and accuracy in
- 6:42information sharing. While some argue the Twitter's
- 6:45decision to remove It funded or state-affiliated, labels levels,
- 6:49the playing field for media Outlets, others contend that it
- 6:52may make it more challenging for users to differentiate between
- 6:56independent and government-controlled news
- 6:58sources. That was Twitter navigates, this
- 7:01new chapter under Ilan. The platform is ability to
- 7:04balance Revenue generation user experience and Trust in the
- 7:08verification system will be crucial going forward.
- 7:11And as of now, the controversial changes to the verification
- 7:14process and removal of me. Dia labels have sparked intense
- 7:18discussions about the platform's future Direction and priorities.
