- 1:40today's episode of the Lineup, The Frivolous Forger Francis, Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:47by transcription, we take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in
- 1:51a great American city. We're under the cold, blaring lights. What passed
- 1:55before us? The innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer,
- 2:00This is the lineup. I just hate things like this. Really, I
- 2:31do you ever been in the lineup before, Miss Marken? I should say
- 2:35not, but I feel like such a fool. You'll tell you how it
- 2:38take. It'll depend on which line the suspect appears. Well, heavens,
- 2:43can't they brought him in the first line or something? Maybe they will.
- 2:46I want you to tell me, will is that disinfectant? I smell certainly
- 2:54strong? Be gladman. This whole thing's over. Breeze you people out there
- 3:01on the other side of the wire in the audience room, may I have
- 3:05your attention? Please thank you. My name as Greb, Sargeant Matt Greb.
- 3:08I'll explain the line of them. Each of the suspects you will see
- 3:13will be numbered. I'll call off a number, their name and charge.
- 3:16If you have any questions or identifications, Please remember the number as signed to
- 3:21the prisoner as I call his name at the end of each line. When
- 3:23I ask what questions or identifications, call out the number if you're sure or
- 3:29not too sure of the suspect cabin held. The officers who took your name
- 3:32will assist you. They're seated among you. The questions I asked these suspects
- 3:37amli to get a natural tonal voice, so do not pay too much attention
- 3:39to their answers as they often lie. Bring on the line, all right,
- 3:46keep it moving, boys, right over to the end of the stage.
- 3:49Come on, that's right, all the way over to the end.
- 3:52Take your hands out of your pockets, turn and face the front. When
- 3:55I call your number, I want you to step out and talk up.
- 3:59Stand ups great, answer my questions and a good loud voice so the people
- 4:02in the back of the room can hear you. When I ask you where
- 4:05you live, I want the address you slept that last night. Okay,
- 4:11all right? Number one, Connie brush Burglary, Ready, boys, seventeen

- 4:45you live? Dale? Who were the dog kushy dogs? Place? A

- 5:04it there on and off. Maybe three years virgin live before that? Prison?

- 5:15Cliff Barry open charge. Where do you live? Cliff? Did you hit
- 5:21the question? I heard it? Sergeant. I understand that I'm not compelled
- 5:26to answer your questions. I'm not compelling you. I'm asking you to cooperate.
- 5:30The questions you ask might intimidate me. Look, the public defender happens
- 5:34to be standing in the back of this room. If I get out of
- 5:36line, he'll let me. No. Cliff, Now come on, tell
- 5:40the folks where you live. I can't see anything out there. Take my
- 5:44word for it. I want to know where you live, what kind of
- 5:46work you do, who you were arrested with if anybody, whether you had
- 5:50any weapons or whether you own a car? Okay, I'd rather not answer

- 6:26number four? Sergeant, yes, lieutenant at all? Okay, Bob and
- 6:31Giggan stay here. The rest of you back where you came from. I'm
- 6:39not exactly sure, but it certainly looks like you. Well we'll find out.
- 6:43All right. Up to the set of Florian, come all right on
- 6:46under the light, I said, Now do a quarter turn, our full
- 6:51quarter turn. Hold. She looks like him from the side. Could you

- 8:09being a policeman? Oh? Yeah, I just fill out your name and
- 8:13address, the dating, the time. Okay, yeah, I think this
- 8:18has some inkling. And this about. Am I willing to appear in court?
- 8:26Yes? In cases of preliminary hearing, you'd be asked to appear before
- 8:30a magistrate and testify at the same time we present the complaint. Chances are
- 8:33you will be called at all. Oh, you'll probably wavers right and plead
- 8:37guilty. From there on it'll go straight to superior court for decision. Well
- 8:43that's the way it works. That's the way it works here. Thank you.
- 8:48I want to thank you for coming down to night, miss Lacking.

- 9:07bad checks all over time, something like forty two hundred dollars worth last month
- 9:13alone. But they all as dumb as I was. Well, nicely dressed.

- 9:35in the line. Oh you know that old man in the lineup tonight,

- 19:03and couldn't get ahold of anymore. Twelve will be enough. This is
- 19:06mister Christie, Sergeant Quine. Mister Christie's number thirteen. You're hiring superstitious,
- 19:11are you? No? No, you can just grab a chair there anyway,
- 19:15mister Christie. This won't take long. Okay. I thought Matt was
- 19:19with your pa. He's across the home with Asher. Oh there, all
- 19:25right, Tom, a little band quin hi here we got to sell as
- 19:27a problem. Looks like a Tom. You're ready to go to work?
- 19:30Hip? All right? It's ladies and gentlemen. I'm sorry to bother all
- 19:36your people by having you come down here again, but you've all been stung
- 19:40with bad checks and we want to bring you up to date on what's happening.
- 19:44We're holding a man now who's been identified as a check passer. Our
- 19:48handwriting department is confirmed it. He's the same man some of you were unable
- 19:52to identify when we asked you to pick him out of the line this week.
- 19:55However, we're pretty sure there's more than one man involved. The general
- 20:00description of both minutes about the same. That's why mister Thompson's here. This
- 20:04is mister Thompson. I suppose all of you know that a composite picture is
- 20:11drawn from detailed information about the facial characteristics of a person. Well, that's
- 20:15mister Thompson's job in our department. He's pretty good at it too, but
- 20:18he needs the cooperation of every one of you. He'll sit and listen for
- 20:22hours to what you have to say about the man who gave you those bad
- 20:26checks. All right, Tommy, it's about it, lieutenant. Okay,
- 20:30Oh yours, all of you people who saw the suspect within the last two
- 20:33weeks, where your hands. All of those who saw within the last month,
- 20:38coffee man, Let's go in here first. Okay, we know you've
- 20:44been working with someone on spots. Come on, come on, who is
- 20:47this other guy? Oh you're all wet? Nah ah? You once up
- 20:51in there? No? Did you make the checks up in batches and then
- 20:55take turns passing? What checks? These checks? These checks? Right here
- 20:57in my head? I never saw in my life. Who's the other guy?
- 21:00There isn't any other guy. Look, I haven't had a drink of
- 21:04water for two hours, neither, Revi. Come on, tell us about
- 21:07the other guy. I can last as long as you tour anybody else you
- 21:11get down here in this crumby place. How much did you pay for that
- 21:14apart? I'm still calling, been going on all day. I don't think
- 21:19that guy's gonna say I'm afraid and not. Well, maybe it won't make
- 21:23any difference, Martin, Ben, what else she gets in tonight? Nelly
- 21:45Molly's sister, Ben, this is my night for the fights. O.
- 21:52Look, Ben, she's only going to be in town one night. You
- 21:56might like her. Tommy finish it, and he said he called me and
- 22:03then Barts. Isn't making things very easy? You look? Bean? Three
- 22:07hours with that guy, and I was asking myself question, he's not going
- 22:11to be easy, Ben, That's why am we doing things the hardway we
- 22:15have now been? Yeah, quin I'll Crockett turned out a type the machine
- 22:18he was on those checks and turned out to be a local manufacturing out that
- 22:22called the Make Piece Printing Company. He talked to him in huh, and
- 22:26I was out this morning. They make all sorts of printing equipment. The
- 22:29general manager is quite an expert. He says. Those checks were all done
- 22:32up on what he calls a forty one model. What's that, quin Well,
- 22:36it's a little portable check making machine. They made them for about two
- 22:38years now they sell them the firms that have small payrolls say it might be
- 22:42somebody in an accounting department who could do it. Been, no, no,
- 22:45no, at least they'll be pretty hard, Matt. They make piece
- 22:48people set him up for the individual firm type and all to be hard to
- 22:52change the type. And every one of those checks has a different company name
- 22:56on it. Do you get a list of all the people in town who
- 22:59bought those machines? Uh? Huh? How didn't night firms? Hi?
- 23:03Ash sure you finish just got him out of photographic. Well, this is
- 23:08what they say. He looks like m Yes, I think it's dream stuff.
- 23:15No, m you sure got it all over bath, wouldn't you say,
- 23:18Ben? Maybe let's get him and find out. It's a very headed
- 23:33little loud. If it saves a lot of time, I would have bought
- 23:34their big model right in here, gentlemen, but the little one is good
- 23:38enough for my office, and we just want to sample off the machine.
- 23:41We're glad to help him anyway. Oh, mister Blair, Yes, these
- 23:45two gentlemen from the police department, Lieutenant gut Thrie S are in Grab.
- 23:48Is it? Yes? Grab? Would you mind showing them our checking machine?
- 23:53Well? This is it right here? Would you mind running one off
- 23:56for us? Oh? So, like mister Blair, I just canceled the
- 23:59number when it comes out, you know, all right, sir? Well,
- 24:02it's it's electric and all you do is set the amount here like this
- 24:07and then you run it off like this. I tell there is to it.
- 24:15May we keep that sample? Oh? Sure? Sure? Anything else
- 24:18I can do? Do you have a man working for you who looks something
- 24:22like this? No, mister Blair, does he resemble anyone you know?
- 24:29No, anyone who might have worked here, mister Hastings at one time or
- 24:33another. No, no, no, no, sir, all right,
- 24:37thanks for your cooperation. Yeah, I'll client mister Kadricks in your office at
- 24:52the man from the printing company, h if he's been working with us all
- 24:55day looking at samples from those machines. Mister Cardricks is Lieutenant Guthrie, Sergeant
- 25:00Grabbin. Hello, glad to meet you both, and it's nice of you
- 25:03to give us a hand, mister Kendricks, glad to do it. And
- 25:04then my company feels a little of a bash that one of our machines is
- 25:07involved in all this. Did you see all the samples we've brought in,
- 25:11mister Kendricks, Yes, I did, Sergeant. I was just explaining to
- 25:14Sergeant Quine that I don't think any of those bad checks were printed on any
- 25:18of the machines in town. Oh, of course, that's just after a
- 25:22hasty survey of the situation. But there's nothing outstanding on any of the samples
- 25:26brought in to tie them up with the same machine that printed the bad checks.
- 25:32You've gone over all of them everyone, Sorry, Lieutenant, I wish
- 25:37I had better news for you. I'll go over them again if you like,
- 25:40and we want to be sure. Of course, there were only a
- 25:42hundred and native them sold in this city. We rechecked our sales department on
- 25:47that, Yes, and no others that you might not have a recordize no
- 25:52other side. But what about samples? Samples? Well, you know salesmen
- 25:56have samples, john't they when you first put them on the market. Just
- 26:00happened to think there is one machine that's not a combat for We had a
- 26:04man on our sales staff two or three years ago name of Fisher, Ed
- 26:08Fisher. Seemed like a nice chap, but he didn't work out. He
- 26:11got in an argument with a customer and we had to let him go.
- 26:15He never did return the sample machine we issued to him. Man, Yeah,
- 26:18mister Kendricks, would you remember the salesman if you saw him? I
- 26:22think so? Well, is this him, mister Kendricks? Why? Why?
- 26:27Yes, Yes, that's him, Yes, mister Fisher, that's right.
