• 0:38
If you've ever wondered how someone can run, throw, and lead
• 0:42
a football team all at once, Lamar Jackson is the perfect
• 0:45
person to learn about. So let's get started and
• 0:48
discover what makes Lamar Jackson such a big name in
• 0:51
sports. First, let's start with the
• 0:53
basics, Who is Lamar Jackson? Lamar Jackson is a professional
• 0:58
football player in the National Football League, also known as
• 1:02
the NFL. He plays quarterback for the
• 1:04
Baltimore Ravens. The quarterback is a very
• 1:07
important position on a football team.
• 1:09
The quarterback is the player who starts almost every play.
• 1:13
He gets the ball from the center and then decides what to do
• 1:16
next. He can throw it to another
• 1:17
player, hand it off, or sometimes run with it himself.
• 1:21
It's a job that takes quick thinking, skill, and a lot of
• 1:24
practice. Lamar Jackson was born on
• 1:27
January 7th, 1997 in Pompano Beach, FL.
• 1:32
That means he grew up in a warm, sunny place where he could play
• 1:36
outside most of the year. Like many kids, Lamar loved
• 1:40
playing sports. When he was young, he played
• 1:42
football with his friends in parks and fields near his home.
• 1:46
His family noticed early on that he was really fast and loved to
• 1:49
compete. By the time he was in high
• 1:51
school, Lamar was already a star on his football team.
• 1:55
Lamar attended Boynton Beach High School in Florida.
• 1:58
There he became known for his amazing speed and strong arm.
• 2:02
He could throw the football a long way down the field, but he
• 2:05
could also run past defenders and score touchdowns himself.
• 2:08
Coaches and fans were amazed by how hard he worked and how much
• 2:13
he improved every year. He was so good in high school
• 2:16
that colleges from all over the country wanted him to play for
• 2:19
their teams. Lamar chose to go to the
• 2:21
  University of Louisville in Kentucky.
• 2:23
College football is a big deal in the United States, and
• 2:27
Louisville is known for having a competitive team.
• 2:29
While at Louisville, Lamar Jackson became even more
• 2:33
impressive. He played for three seasons and
• 2:35
scored lots of touchdowns, both by throwing and by running.
• 2:39
  In 2016, something amazing happened.
• 2:43
Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy.
• 2:46
The Heisman Trophy is given every year to the best college
• 2:49
football player in the country. Winning the Heisman is one of
• 2:52
the highest honors in college football, and Lamar was only 19
• 2:56
years old when he won it. He was one of the youngest
• 2:59
players ever to receive the award.
• 3:01
Now, let's talk about what makes Lamar Jackson so special as a
• 3:04
football player. Most quarterbacks are known for
• 3:07
throwing the football, but Lamar is famous for both his passing
• 3:10
and his running. In fact, he's one of the fastest
• 3:14
quarterbacks ever. When he plays, he can escape
• 3:16
defenders and run down the field almost as quickly as a running
• 3:20
back, which is a position on the team that usually specializes in
• 3:23
running. Because of his speed and
• 3:25
agility, Lamar can turn a play that looks like it might fail
• 3:29
into a big gain for his team. Here's a fun fact.
• 3:32
In 2019, Lamar Jackson became only the second quarterback in
• 3:37
NFL history to rush for over 1000 yards in a single season.
• 3:41
Rushing means running with a football.
• 3:43
To give you an idea, 1000 yards is about the length of 10
• 3:47
football fields put together. That year he broke the NFL
• 3:51
record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1206 yards.
• 3:56
This was more than any other quarterback had ever run in a
• 3:59
single season. That's a huge achievement.
• 4:03
But Lamar isn't just a runner, he's also an excellent passer.
• 4:07
In the 2019 season, he led the entire NFL in touchdown passes
• 4:12
with 36A. Touchdown pass is when the
• 4:15
quarterback throws the ball to a teammate in the end zone and
• 4:18
they score 6 points. Leading the league in touchdown
• 4:21
passes is a sign that a quarterback is not only talented
• 4:25
but also a smart and effective leader on the field because of
• 4:28
his amazing performance. In 2019, Lamar Jackson was named
• 4:33
the NFL's Most Valuable Player or MVP.
• 4:36
The MVP award is given to the best player in the whole league
• 4:40
for that season. Lamar became the youngest
• 4:42
quarterback ever to win the MVP award, and he was only the
• 4:46
second player in NFL history to win the MVP by a unanimous vote,
• 4:51
which means every voter chose him as the best player.
• 4:54
That's a rare accomplishment. You might be wondering what is
• 4:58
it like to watch Lamar Jackson play?
• 5:00
Imagine being at a football game with thousands of fans all
• 5:04
cheering. When Lamar has the football,
• 5:07
everyone pays attention because you never know what he's going
• 5:10
to do. He might throw a long pass down
• 5:12
the field, or he might see an opening and run past defenders
• 5:16
for a big game. His moves are so quick that
• 5:19
sometimes defenders can't even catch him.
• 5:22
Fans love watching him because he makes every play exciting.
• 5:26
Lamar's teammates say he is a great leader.
• 5:29
He encourages his team, listens to his coaches and always tries
• 5:33
to get better. Even though he is famous and has
• 5:36
won many awards, he works hard and stays focused on helping his
• 5:39
team win. His hard work and positive
• 5:42
attitude are a big reason why so many kids and adults look up to
• 5:45
him. Now, let's talk about some more
• 5:48
  interesting facts about Lamar Jackson.
• 5:50

• 5:56
his biggest supporters. She has helped him with his
• 5:58
training and has always cheered for him.
• 6:01

• 7:20
his body helps him play his best.

• 7:26
same way as he gets older. Running a lot can be tough on
