- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 6th of March. And thank you for joining me for
- 0:21inviting me into your day. We have got a wonderful day
- 0:25today. Today we actually are going to
- 0:27be starting a new book. And not just any old book, but
- 0:30the most action packed, page turning, crowd pleasing gospel
- 0:36of them all. That's right, we're going to be
- 0:37reading Mark. Mark is the most incredible
- 0:41gospel. Mark is the shortest and most
- 0:44concise of the Gospels. This is gospel written by this
- 0:48bloke named Mark who was actually quite a prominent
- 0:52character in the earlier church. And you will hear him referred
- 0:55to an act. You will hear him referred to in
- 0:58in the books that Peter writes. Peter refers to Mark as his son.
- 1:02Mark has grown up at the feet of the apostles.
- 1:07He has listened to Peter that that rambunctious big hearted
- 1:13shoot from the hip guy Peter and he has just soaked up all the
- 1:18stories of Jesus. He has been around the growth of
- 1:21the church and he has heard eyewitness accounts of
- 1:25everything that happened during Jesus ministry and he wants to
- 1:29share this. And his motivation is not to
- 1:32share this as an encyclopaedic word.
- 1:35Perfect account of detailed item by item, event by event.
- 1:41No, rather than being like a photograph, this gospel is like
- 1:45a painting. It is a portrait to help us
- 1:48understand Jesus and his ministry and the way that he's
- 1:51written It is really in two halves.
- 1:53And the first half that we'll begin today races through just
- 1:57events and healings and parables and big active things going on.
- 2:04And then we reached the middle point of the book where Peter
- 2:08says you are the Christ, the Son of God.
- 2:12And in that moment the whole book pivots now that it's
- 2:15revealed who Jesus is. And the second half of the book
- 2:18becomes a lot slower as Mark really slows down to hone in on
- 2:24Jesus and his mission here. So this is a profound
- 2:29communication about Jesus and his life and his ministry, and
- 2:34it does not waste time with irrelevant details.
- 2:37It is just from one thing to the next to the next.
- 2:42I've said enough. Let us hear from Mark.
- 2:44Let us sit at his feet and hear these stories from him as we
- 2:48read together. The Beginning in Mark, Chapter
- 2:51one. This is the good news about
- 3:04Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.
- 3:08It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written Look, I am
- 3:12sending a messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your
- 3:16way. He is a voice shouting in the
- 3:19wilderness. Prepare the way for the Lord's
- 3:23coming. Clear the road for him.
- 3:26The messenger was John the Baptist.
- 3:29He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be
- 3:32baptised to show that they had repented of their sins and
- 3:35turned to God to be forgiven. All of Judah, including all the
- 3:40people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John, and when they
- 3:44confess their sins, he baptised them in the Jordan River.
- 3:48His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair and he wore a
- 3:51leather belt around his waist for food.
- 3:54He ate locusts and wild honey, John announced.
- 3:59Someone is coming soon. Who is greater than I am So much
- 4:03greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and
- 4:07untie the straps of his sandals. I baptise you with water, but he
- 4:13will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.
- 4:17One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptised
- 4:22him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the
- 4:26water, he saw the heavens splitting apart, and the Holy
- 4:30Spirit descended on him like a dove.
- 4:34And a voice from heaven said, You are my dearly loved Son, and
- 4:40you bring me great joy. The Spirit then compelled Jesus
- 4:45to go into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan.
- 4:49For 40 days. He was out among the wild
- 4:52animals, and angels took care of him.
- 4:56Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into
- 5:00Galilee, where he preached God's good news.
- 5:04The time promised by God has come At last, he announced.
- 5:08The Kingdom of God is near. Repent of your sins, and believe
- 5:12the good news. One day, as Jesus was walking
- 5:17along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his
- 5:20brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished
- 5:25for a living. Jesus called out to them.
- 5:28Come follow me and I will show you how to fish for people.
- 5:33And they left their Nets at once and followed him.
- 5:37A little farther up the shore. Jesus saw Zebedee's sons James
- 5:41and John in a boat repairing their Nets.
- 5:44He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their
- 5:48father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, Jesus and his
- 5:52companions went to the town of Capernaum.
- 5:56When the Sabbath day came, he went to the synagogue and began
- 5:59to teach. The people were amazed at his
- 6:02teaching, for he taught with real authority, quite unlike the
- 6:06teachers of religious law. Suddenly a man in the synagogue
- 6:11who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out.
- 6:14Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth, Have you come
- 6:19to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One
- 6:22of God, but Jesus reprimanded him.
- 6:26Be quiet, come out of the man, he ordered at that.
- 6:31The evil spirit screamed through the man into a convulsion, and
- 6:36then came out of him. Amazement gripped the audience,
- 6:41and they began to discuss what had happened.
- 6:43What sort of new teaching is this?
- 6:46They asked excitedly. It has such authority, Even evil
- 6:50spirits obey his orders. The news about Jesus spread
- 6:54quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.
- 6:58After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went
- 7:01to Simon and Andrew's home. Now Simon's mother in law was
- 7:05sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right
- 7:09away. So he went to her bedside, took
- 7:13her by the hand and helped her sit up.
- 7:17Then the fever left her and she prepared a meal for them.
- 7:20That evening after sunset, many sick and demon possessed people
- 7:25were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the
- 7:28door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who
- 7:31were sick with various diseases and he cast out many demons.
- 7:36But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to
- 7:40speak before Daybreak. The next morning, Jesus got up
- 7:45and went out to an isolated place to pray.
- 7:48Later, Simon and the others went out to find him.
- 7:52When they found him, they said everyone is looking for you.
- 7:56But Jesus replied we must go on to other towns as well and I
- 8:00will preach to them too. That is why I came.
- 8:05So we travelled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in
- 8:08the synagogues and casting out demons.
- 8:12A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging
- 8:16to be healed. If you are willing, you can heal
- 8:19me and make me clean, he said. Move with compassion, Jesus
- 8:25reached out and touched him. I am willing, he said.
- 8:30Be healed instantly the leprosy disappeared and the man was
- 8:35healed. Then Jesus sent him on his way
- 8:38with a stern warning. Don't tell anyone about this.
- 8:42Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you.
- 8:46Take along the offering required in the law of Moses.
- 8:49For those who have been healed of leprosy, this will be a
- 8:53public testimony that you have been cleansed.
- 8:57But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone
- 9:00what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon
- 9:05surrounded Jesus, and he couldn't publicly enter a town
- 9:09anywhere. He had to stay out in the
- 9:11secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him.
- 9:27Jesus, you are just so wonderful.
- 9:33We hear of your life, where you lived with such compassion for
- 9:37others. Your heart is to heal.
- 9:40Your heart is to make whole. And as we read about you, we get
- 9:46a window into understanding the heart of the Father.
- 9:51And you, our Godfather, Son, and Spirit, are a good God, a God of
- 9:57a big heart of compassion and love and kindness.
- 10:04And thank you that you share that love, compassion, and
- 10:07kindness with us, even when we don't deserve it.
- 10:12Here you are, loving us. Arms open wide.
- 10:17Thank you for this love and how it makes us whole, and we pray
- 10:23in your loving name, all of these things.
- 10:26Amen.
