- 0:00Speaker 1: Three years of portraying a lethal gangster on the stage
- 0:03Speaker 1: have left comedian Jeff Morley eager to put the role
- 0:06Speaker 1: behind him. On December 16th, 1946, CBS presented Lux Radio Theater,
- 0:13Speaker 1: episode 550, Killer Cates. Jack Benny takes the dramatic lead
- 0:20Speaker 1: as Morley, whose success in the Broadway-style melodrama The Man
- 0:24Speaker 1: Who Couldn't Be Killed begins to spill beyond the footlights,
- 0:28Speaker 1: alarming his wife, Helen, his manager, and a doctor. Gail Patrick,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Alan Reed, Jay Novello, Doris Singleton, and Ken Christie are
- 0:39Speaker 1: featured in the cast under the direction of Sanford Barnett.
- 0:43Speaker 1: The Lux presentation adapts a Warner Brothers screenplay. We now
- 0:48Speaker 1: take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Lux presents Hollywood. Lever Brothers Company brings you the Lux
- 1:07Speaker 2: Radio Theater, starring Jack Benny and Gail Patrick in Killer Cates.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr.
- 1:16Speaker 4: William Keeley.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:27Speaker 6: Very few institutions on the air update the Lux Radio Theater.
- 1:31Speaker 6: But one of the exceptions is our star tonight, Warkegan's
- 1:35Speaker 6: favorite son, Jack Benny. It was 15 years ago that
- 1:40Speaker 6: Jack started trying for laughs on the air, and he's
- 1:43Speaker 6: still trying. As a matter of fact, we'll have to
- 1:46Speaker 6: allow Jack's one of America's top comedians. But tonight he
- 1:50Speaker 6: branches out into a different field in a thrilling piece
- 1:53Speaker 6: of action drama entitled Killer Kate's. Based on a Warner
- 1:58Speaker 6: Brothers screenplay, it was adapted especially for Jack's newly discovered
- 2:01Speaker 6: dramatic ability and co-star's lovely and talented Gail Patrick. Of course,
- 2:08Speaker 6: to get Jack here tonight, we had to add special
- 2:10Speaker 6: concessions to the contract. not the least of which was
- 2:14Speaker 6: a large-sized box of Lux Flakes. In fact, Jack has
- 2:18Speaker 6: been counting the contents, flake by flake, between rehearsals. And
- 2:23Speaker 6: the gleam in his eye when he discovered they were
- 2:26Speaker 6: all there could only be matched, I'm sure, by the
- 2:29Speaker 6: gleam in a woman's eye when she sees Lux Flakes
- 2:32Speaker 6: on her grocer's shelf. It's a look that says, all's
- 2:36Speaker 6: well that ends with Lux. And now, the Lux Radio
- 2:40Speaker 6: Theater presents Jack Benny as Killer Cates, and Gail Patrick
- 2:43Speaker 6: as Helen, with Alan Reed as Al Brady. In this
- 2:48Speaker 6: rather unusual story, Mr. Benny plays the part of Jeff Morley,
- 2:53Speaker 6: sometimes known as Killer Cates. In the opening scene, we
- 2:58Speaker 6: find our cold-blooded killer at the door of his old hideaway.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Well, you, Spangler, wait till I get this door open. Spangler,
- 3:16Speaker 4: where have you.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Killer. Killer Cates. It's you. Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Blinky, it's me.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Gee, Killer, I didn't know it was you. I was
- 3:29Speaker 4: just waiting for Spangler to come back.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Spangler ain't coming back.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Not coming back. Well, the surgeon's right. He had it coming.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I was going to knock him off myself. I was, killer.
- 3:39Speaker 4: He's the guy that ratted on you. Yeah? Yeah, killer, yeah. Gee,
- 3:43Speaker 4: it's good to see you back again. When did you
- 3:45Speaker 4: get out?
- 3:46Speaker 5: Last night, Blinky. I busted out just to see you
- 3:50Speaker 5: and Spangler. I'd just seen Spangler.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You busted out? Then you're hot. Don't worry, killer. I'll
- 3:57Speaker 4: hide you. You can use my place.
- 3:59Speaker 5: So you can put the finger on me like you
- 4:01Speaker 5: did last time, eh, Blinky?
- 4:02Speaker 4: It wasn't me, killer. I swear it wasn't me. It
- 4:05Speaker 4: was Fanger, I tell you. It was Fanger. He was
- 4:06Speaker 4: the guy that.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Shut up, you lying rat.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Honest, killer. You've got to believe me. I had nothing
- 4:11Speaker 4: to do with it.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Get down on your knees, Blinky, and start praying.
- 4:15Speaker 4: But, killer, please. You can't do this. I'm your pal,
- 4:19Speaker 4: your friend. We grew up together. We was like brothers, killer.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Please give me a break.
- 4:23Speaker 5: You didn't give me a break, did you? When you
- 4:25Speaker 5: sent me up to the big house to rot in
- 4:27Speaker 5: a lousy cell? You weren't satisfied to take over my rackets.
- 4:30Speaker 5: You even had to steal my dame.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I tell you, I didn't do it, killer. Everything is
- 4:34Speaker 4: just the way you left it. And Millie, I didn't
- 4:36Speaker 4: steal her. She's still your girl, killer. She's waiting for you.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Where do you want it, Blinky? In the belly or
- 4:41Speaker 5: the back?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Killer, please give me a chance. I'll get out of town.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Get down on your knees, Blinky.
- 4:52Speaker 4: No, Killer, don't. That's why I had nothing to do
- 4:55Speaker 4: with this. Believe me. Start praying, Blinky. Killer! You can't
- 4:59Speaker 4: do it. Don't shoot.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Don't.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Don't. Killer. So long, Blinky.
- 5:13Speaker 5: You were my pal once, but you just couldn't keep
- 5:15Speaker 5: your nose clean.
- 5:19Speaker 8: I gotta get out of here.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Come on out, killer. You haven't got a chance.
- 5:22Speaker 5: You want me, copper? You'll have to come in and
- 5:24Speaker 5: get me.
- 5:25Speaker 4: There he goes for the window. Got him. Is he dead? No. No,
- 5:34Speaker 4: I'm not dead, copper. Of course I'm not dead.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Remember me? I'm Killer Gates. A man who couldn't be killed.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Just keep bringing the curtain up and down, Eddie. He's
- 5:59Speaker 5: good for a dozen bows. Whoever thought this corny show
- 6:02Speaker 5: would be a hit?
- 6:04Speaker 4: You gotta hand it to that Jeff.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Morley, corny or not. He plays that killer case like
- 6:08Speaker 5: a real gangster. Get down on your knees and start praying, Blinky.
- 6:12Speaker 8: Where do you want it?
- 6:13Speaker 5: In the belly or the back?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Quiet, quiet, quiet.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Here he comes.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Nice show, Mr.
- 6:17Speaker 9: Morley.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Thanks, Eddie.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Is my manager around?
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Mr.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Brady said he'd wait for you in the dressing room. Thanks.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Hiya, Jeff. Hello, Brady.
- 6:26Speaker 5: I want to talk to you. Fine.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I'd say congratulations, killer. For what? For the 1,000th performance
- 6:31Speaker 4: of the man who couldn't be killed.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Seems like a million. And stop calling me killer, will you?
- 6:36Speaker 5: It's bad enough I have to play that part without
- 6:38Speaker 5: being reminded of it all the time.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Well, you've been doing all right for three years now.
- 6:42Speaker 5: But can't you see what's happening to me? Every time
- 6:44Speaker 5: I have to shoot a gun, I break into a
- 6:46Speaker 5: cold sweat. I'm afraid of guns.
- 6:48Speaker 4: They're so noisy. Well, you can't bump off Blinky with
- 6:52Speaker 4: a water pistol. His makeup will run.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Don't be funny. Imagine me, a killer, standing there with
- 6:57Speaker 5: two guns.
- 6:58Speaker 4: You gotta use two guns, Jeff. When we tried it
- 7:00Speaker 4: with one gun, you used to put your other hand
- 7:02Speaker 4: on your hip. What? Why don't you forget it, Jeff?
- 7:06Speaker 4: Did you see the audience out there tonight? Not an
- 7:08Speaker 4: empty seat in the house.
- 7:10Speaker 5: I tell you, this play is driving me nuts. I
- 7:12Speaker 5: have nightmares. I dream that I'm busting out of prison,
- 7:14Speaker 5: taking guys for rides, sticking up banks. It's getting so
- 7:18Speaker 5: every time I walk down the street and see a policeman,
- 7:20Speaker 5: I duck.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Look, Jeff, what you need is a nice long rest.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Go home and relax. Spend some time with your wife.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Play a little golf. This is Saturday. You don't have
- 7:27Speaker 4: to be back to the theater till Monday night.
- 7:29Speaker 5: No. No, Brady. That's not the solution. Don't you understand?
- 7:35Speaker 5: I'm a comedian.
- 7:37Speaker 4: A comic.
- 7:37Speaker 5: All my life I've been a comedian. I don't want
- 7:40Speaker 5: to play a gangster. I want to make people laugh.
- 7:42Speaker 4: All right, so you're a comedian. What happened when you
- 7:44Speaker 4: played comedy? You did a show on Broadway called The
- 7:46Speaker 4: Meanest Man in Syracuse, folded in two weeks.
- 7:49Speaker 5: I know.
- 7:49Speaker 4: And when you went out to Hollywood to make a picture,
- 7:51Speaker 4: what was the name of that epic? Oh, The Bugle
- 7:54Speaker 4: Blew at Midnight. Well? The Audience Blew at Nine O'Clock.
- 8:00Speaker 5: So what? I made a mistake. Anybody's entitled to one mistake.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Yeah, but you made yours while you were standing in
- 8:06Speaker 4: front of a camera. And everybody who saw that picture's
- 8:09Speaker 4: a witness. There weren't many, but they're witnesses.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Look, Brady, you can talk till doomsday. But I know
- 8:15Speaker 5: how I feel inside. For 25 years, I've been doing comedy,
- 8:19Speaker 5: and that's what I want to keep on doing.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Jeff, what's the use of kidding? As a comedian, you're lousy.
- 8:24Speaker 4: You stink.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Oh, you and your innuendos.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Look at the record. Since you gave up comedy and
- 8:31Speaker 4: became Killer Kate's, look what you got. An estate on
- 8:33Speaker 4: Long Island, a butler, three cars, and you're only number
- 8:36Speaker 4: 12 in line for a new refrigerator. What more do
- 8:40Speaker 4: you want? My peace of mind. That's what I want.
- 8:44Speaker 5: And it's no use arguing. I'm getting out of this
- 8:47Speaker 5: play while I've still got my sanity, my health. Even
- 8:50Speaker 5: if it means those one-night stands again.
- 8:51Speaker 4: But, Jeff, boy, think of your wife. Think of Helen.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I am thinking of Helen. In the mental condition I'm in,
- 8:57Speaker 5: what kind of a husband am I?
- 8:58Speaker 4: Well, then, think of me. I get 10% of your salary.
- 9:02Speaker 4: For the last three years, I've been eating. I live
- 9:04Speaker 4: in a nice apartment. I wear good clothes. Don't take
- 9:07Speaker 4: those things away from me, Jeff.
- 9:10Speaker 5: That's what I thought. All you care about is your 10%. Well,
- 9:14Speaker 5: I'm through, so you might as well get out of here, Brady,
- 9:16Speaker 5: and start looking for a new killer.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Now get out. Out.
- 9:19Speaker 9: Out.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Okay, okay.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Oh.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Oh, my head.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Oh, those awful headaches.
- 9:28Speaker 9: Oh.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Pardon me, Mrs. Morley.
- 9:39Speaker 10: What is it, Walters?
- 9:39Speaker 11: Mr. Brady telephoned. I told him Mr. Morley was asleep
- 9:43Speaker 11: and he said he'd drop in later on.
- 9:44Speaker 10: Oh, thank you, Walters. What time is it?
- 9:46Speaker 11: 12.15, madam.
- 9:48Speaker 10: That late? I think you'd better wake Mr. Morley now.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Yes, madam.
- 9:53Speaker 12: Mr.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Morley?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Mr. Morley? Mr.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Morley?
- 10:00Speaker 4: Mr. Morley. Wake up, sir. It's 12.15.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Listen, Scalise. For now on, you're taking orders from me.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Killer Kate, see?
- 10:08Speaker 4: Mr. Morley. You don't like it?
- 10:09Speaker 5: You get the same thing that happened to Spangler. You'll
- 10:12Speaker 5: wind up at the bottom of the river with your
- 10:13Speaker 5: feet in a barrel of cement.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Mr. Morley. Mr.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Morley.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Wake up.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Take your dirty mitts off of me before I.
- 10:19Speaker 4: What? Where am I? Oh, it's you, Walters.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I must have been dreaming.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 10:27Speaker 5: What was I saying?
- 10:28Speaker 11: Something about a Mr. Scalise, sir. You intimated that in
- 10:32Speaker 11: the future he was to receive his instructions from you.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 10:36Speaker 5: A darn show again. Can't get it off my mind.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Other men dream about Lana Turner. I dream about Dillinger.
- 10:44Speaker 5: He's not even wearing a sweater. Walters, tell Mrs. Morley
- 10:48Speaker 5: I'll be right.
- 10:52Speaker 10: Would you like another cup of coffee, dear?
- 10:54Speaker 4: No, thanks.
- 10:56Speaker 5: I don't feel like eating. I tell you, Helen, if
- 10:59Speaker 5: I don't get out of this show, I'm going to
- 11:00Speaker 5: have a nervous breakdown.
- 11:02Speaker 10: Jeff, I've never stood in your way. In the old
- 11:04Speaker 10: days when you were playing board, both things were pretty tough.
- 11:07Speaker 10: I went along hoping you'd get a break. But you
- 11:09Speaker 10: must admit that your act always flopped.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Well, I was doing all right until my seal died.
- 11:14Speaker 10: That seal didn't die. You were out of work so
- 11:20Speaker 10: long we had to eat it.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Well?
- 11:23Speaker 10: And what we didn't eat, I had to wear.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Well, all I know is I was happier then. Gee,
- 11:28Speaker 5: and I had a swell act, too. Smart comedy, high class. Gosh,
- 11:33Speaker 5: remember how I used to come out in white flannel pants,
- 11:36Speaker 5: double-breasted blue coat with brass buttons, straw hat and cane,
- 11:39Speaker 5: and I'd say, a funny thing happened to me on
- 11:41Speaker 5: the way to the theater. A panhandler walked up to
- 11:44Speaker 5: me and said, hey, mister, I haven't had a bite
- 11:46Speaker 5: all week.
- 11:47Speaker 4: So I bit him. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Oh, boy,
- 11:52Speaker 4: they used to scream at that.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yes, sir, that act is as good today as it
- 11:56Speaker 5: ever was. Only maybe I'd have to bring it up
- 11:58Speaker 5: to date, you know, take out those General Pershing jokes,
- 12:01Speaker 5: you know. And finish with, you remember I used to
- 12:03Speaker 5: finish with that imitation of Ted Lewis? Yes, sir, is
- 12:07Speaker 5: everybody happy? I don't know, that stuff is surefire.
- 12:12Speaker 10: I like it better when you say, where do you
- 12:14Speaker 10: want it, Blinky, in the belly or the back?
- 12:16Speaker 5: I know. I know, but look, remember just before Brady
- 12:19Speaker 5: got me in the play, you'll have to admit I
- 12:21Speaker 5: was a sensation in that nightclub in Atlantic City.
- 12:23Speaker 10: But you had to work as a lifeguard in the daytime.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I didn't have to. I insisted on it. It kept
- 12:27Speaker 5: me in condition. Atlantic City, I was terrific there. I
- 12:31Speaker 5: got a million laughs.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Who wouldn't in that bathing suit?
- 12:34Speaker 5: All right.
- 12:35Speaker 10: But all right, Jeff, if it means your health and
- 12:37Speaker 10: it'll make you any happier, then I'm for it. We'll
- 12:40Speaker 10: start all over again, right from the very, very, very bottom.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Gee, Helen, you're wonderful. After all, look, we've got what
- 12:48Speaker 5: we want. This big house, the butler, three cars.
- 12:52Speaker 10: Yes, but when are we going to get the new refrigerator?
- 12:54Speaker 5: We're number 12. Oh, Helen, if you only knew how
- 12:59Speaker 5: happy I am. I'm the old Jeff Morley again. Oh, kid,
- 13:03Speaker 5: when my baby smiles at me, ha, ha, ha, ha,
- 13:08Speaker 5: there's a one... There's someone at the door.
- 13:10Speaker 10: Walters, that's probably Mr.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Brady.
- 13:12Speaker 10: Show him right in.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Yes, madam.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Brady?
- 13:14Speaker 4: Brady? How do you like that?
- 13:16Speaker 5: He won't even let me alone on Sundays. Well, I'm
- 13:19Speaker 5: glad he's here. I'm going to straighten him out once
- 13:20Speaker 5: and for all.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Hiya, Killer. Hello, Helen. I brought a couple of fellas
- 13:23Speaker 4: I want you should meet. Shake hands with Bob Stanley
- 13:26Speaker 4: and Freddie McCall.
- 13:27Speaker 10: How do you do?
- 13:27Speaker 4: How are you? Glad to know you, Killer. Yeah, you too, Mrs. Cates.
- 13:31Speaker 5: The name is Morley.
- 13:32Speaker 12: I'm sorry, but I've seen you on the stage so
- 13:34Speaker 12: many times, to me you'll always be Killer Cates.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Oh, no, I won't.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Brady, I got news for you. I've talked the whole
- 13:41Speaker 5: thing over with Helen, and I'm quitting the show.
- 13:43Speaker 4: It ain't as easy as that, Jeff. You got a
- 13:45Speaker 4: run-of-the-play contract, and they won't let you out of it.
- 13:47Speaker 4: You can't quit.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Then I'll walk out.
- 13:49Speaker 10: But, Jeff, can you do that?
- 13:50Speaker 4: If he does, he'll never work in the theater again
- 13:52Speaker 4: as long as he lives. Hmm.
- 13:54Speaker 5: So that's the way it is. Well, I guess... I
- 13:59Speaker 5: guess I can't do anything about it.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Now you're being smart, Jeff. That play will run another
- 14:02Speaker 4: three years, you'll be a millionaire.
- 14:03Speaker 5: So what good is money? I'll end up with a
- 14:05Speaker 5: gold-plated straight jacket.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Look, Jeff, when the show closes, you'll have plenty of
- 14:08Speaker 4: time to enjoy life. In the meantime, let's cash in.
- 14:10Speaker 4: There's a lot of extra gravy around. Gravy?
- 14:14Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 14:14Speaker 4: I finally got you set for a radio deal.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Radio?
- 14:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 5: Well, that sounds all right.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Well, sure. It's a 15-minute program, five times a week.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Stanley and McCauley have written a terrific script. Well, you
- 14:26Speaker 4: hear it.
- 14:27Speaker 3: It's dynamite.
- 14:27Speaker 10: But won't that interfere with the play?
- 14:29Speaker 4: Not at all. He'll be off the air by 8.15.
- 14:31Speaker 4: The curtain don't go up till 8.30. He can eat
- 14:33Speaker 4: his dinner in a taxi. Wait a minute.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Wait a minute, Brady.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Is this, uh, is this.
- 14:42Speaker 5: That comedy program you were talking about?
- 14:44Speaker 4: No, no, I couldn't get a sponsor interested in that.
- 14:46Speaker 4: This one is a natural. We got the radio rights
- 14:49Speaker 4: to the man who couldn't be killed. You're going on
- 14:51Speaker 4: the air as killer cakes. What? Killer Kate's on the air,
- 14:56Speaker 4: nothing doing. Now I know this is awful sudden, Jeff,
- 14:58Speaker 4: but the money is sensational. In a couple of years,
- 15:00Speaker 4: you'll be able to quit and do comedy for the
- 15:02Speaker 4: rest of your life in empty theaters. But look at...
- 15:05Speaker 4: Wait till you hear this script. Brady, I'm... Go ahead, fellas,
- 15:07Speaker 4: explain it to him. Look, I'm not going to... Well,
- 15:09Speaker 4: the program opens with you in a tough spot.
- 15:11Speaker 5: You shoot your way through Scalise's mob. You kill about
- 15:14Speaker 5: eight of them.
- 15:14Speaker 4: But the town gets too hot for you, so you
- 15:16Speaker 4: take it on the land.
- 15:16Speaker 12: Just until the heat is off. You're in a town
- 15:18Speaker 12: in Jersey laying low, see, for a few days. Then
- 15:20Speaker 12: you start a.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Crave action, you go out and you get it. No, no,
- 15:22Speaker 4: I'm not going to do it.
- 15:23Speaker 12: Then you walk into the Maramba, the biggest nightclub in town.
- 15:25Speaker 12: And you tell the boss he's through, but there's a
- 15:26Speaker 12: mob there who tries to put the finger on you.
- 15:28Speaker 12: But you stage a one-man gang war and you take over.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Stop, fellas, please.
- 15:31Speaker 5: I tell you, I'm not going to go with it.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And you have to go out and kill a couple
- 15:33Speaker 4: of cops. You're running things your way. Scalise is out
- 15:34Speaker 4: to get you. There's a pitchfile. You're the man who
- 15:35Speaker 4: couldn't be killed. You're Killer Kate. Killer Kate. Killer Kate. Look, fellas,
- 15:38Speaker 4: you're wasting your time. I'm not going to go through it.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Scalise's mob.
- 15:40Speaker 4: The heat is on. You walk into the marambo. The marambo.
- 15:42Speaker 4: The marambo. But the mouth puts the finger on you.
- 15:44Speaker 4: One thing's your way. You kill two cops. Three cops.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Four cops. Ten cops.
- 15:46Speaker 3: You kill a ten.
- 15:47Speaker 9: Stop.
- 15:47Speaker 10: Stop, I tell you.
- 15:48Speaker 4: You're driving me nuts.
- 15:51Speaker 5: I'm not going.
- 15:56Speaker 8: Oh.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Oh, my head.
- 15:58Speaker 8: Jeff. Jeff. Darling, what's the matter?
- 16:00Speaker 5: Oh.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Oh. Walters!
- 16:06Speaker 5: Walters, call the doctor! Mr. Morley is fated!
- 16:20Speaker 2: In a moment, we'll present Act Two of Killer Cates,
- 16:23Speaker 2: starring Jack Benny and Gail Patrick. Well, Libby, are you
- 16:27Speaker 2: all set for the big charity event on Wednesday?
- 16:29Speaker 3: Am I?
- 16:29Speaker 13: I wouldn't miss it. It's the first world premiere held
- 16:32Speaker 13: here in five years. The yearling will make its much-heralded
- 16:35Speaker 13: debut that night. That's Metro-Gowan Mayor's latest bid for the
- 16:38Speaker 13: Academy Awards.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I hear the picture is as great as the book.
- 16:41Speaker 13: Well, the author, Marjorie Kennan Rawlings, is delighted. The studio
- 16:45Speaker 13: showed me a wire from her, saying how thrilled she
- 16:48Speaker 13: was with the picture. She thought Gregory Peck and Jane
- 16:51Speaker 13: Wyman were perfect casting as the Baxters. And she loved
- 16:54Speaker 13: Claude Jarman, Jr., who plays the part of their.
- 16:56Speaker 8: Son, Jody.
- 16:57Speaker 2: From all I've heard, Claude is young Jody to the life.
- 17:00Speaker 2: A youngster that really gets at your heart.
- 17:02Speaker 13: And those technicolor shots of the Florida pinewoods are as
- 17:05Speaker 13: outstanding as the cast.
- 17:06Speaker 2: What did the stars do for recreation while they were
- 17:08Speaker 2: on location in the woods? There must have been some
- 17:11Speaker 2: weather delays while they were filming the yearling.
- 17:13Speaker 13: Well, Gregory Peck spent his free time fishing. And Jane
- 17:16Speaker 13: Wyman spent some of hers knitting.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Knitting?
- 17:18Speaker 10: Sweaters for herself.
- 17:19Speaker 13: She loves them.
- 17:20Speaker 10: And she has a.
- 17:21Speaker 8: Special trick with them.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Like washing them in Luxe Place?
- 17:23Speaker 10: Well, of course.
- 17:25Speaker 13: All smart girls do that, so sweaters keep their fit.
- 17:28Speaker 13: One of Jane's tricks is tacking in little shoulder pads.
- 17:31Speaker 13: so her sweaters look trim as a blouse.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Do you think, Libby, that all the ladies in our
- 17:35Speaker 2: audience know how much luxe care does for a sweater?
- 17:38Speaker 13: Hmm, considering some of the shrunken ones I've seen, I
- 17:40Speaker 13: guess not.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Well, why don't you tell them how easy luxing is?
- 17:44Speaker 13: Well, all the equipment you need is some mouse-proof pins
- 17:47Speaker 13: and a piece of clean wrapping paper. Take your sweater
- 17:50Speaker 13: and draw an outline around it on the paper. Then
- 17:53Speaker 13: squeeze the sweater in rich, lukewarm luxe suds, ever so
- 17:56Speaker 13: quickly so as not to felt the wool. Now rinse
- 17:59Speaker 13: it well, and this is important. Have the rinse water
- 18:02Speaker 13: the same lukewarm temperature as the suds. Next, squeeze out
- 18:06Speaker 13: the drippings by rolling the sweater in.
- 18:08Speaker 8: A bath towel.
- 18:09Speaker 13: Then lay it on the outline, pat and push it
- 18:12Speaker 13: into shape, and hold it there with pins.
- 18:14Speaker 8: When it's dry, it fits.
- 18:16Speaker 2: As Libby said, rich suds are important for getting good
- 18:19Speaker 2: results with wool. And Luxe flakes go a long way.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Luxe care is really thrifty. Here's your producer, William Keeley.
- 18:29Speaker 6: We continue with the second act of Killer Cates, starring
- 18:33Speaker 6: Jack Benny as Jeff Morley, alias Killer Cates, and Gail
- 18:37Speaker 6: Patrick as his wife, Helen. A few moments ago, when
- 18:47Speaker 6: we left Jeff Morley, he was flat on the floor
- 18:50Speaker 6: with a nervous collapse.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Well, he's resting in bed now, while in another room, Dr.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Elberon solemnly explains his diagnosis to Jeff's wife, Helen, and
- 19:00Speaker 6: his manager, Al Brady.
- 19:03Speaker 14: And as I see it, Jeff is suffering from nervous
- 19:06Speaker 14: fatigue more than anything else. He needs absolute quiet and
- 19:09Speaker 14: a good long rest.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Sure.
- 19:10Speaker 14: Good night's sleep, and he'll be ready to go to
- 19:12Speaker 14: work tomorrow. It'll be a long time before he's ready
- 19:14Speaker 14: to go back on the stage, Mr.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Brady.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Several weeks, perhaps. Several weeks? Well, what about the show?
- 19:19Speaker 4: Without Jeff, it'll fold up. No, no, we can't do it. Helen,
- 19:22Speaker 4: we'll have to get another doctor.
- 19:24Speaker 10: Oh, now, wait a minute, Al. I'm not going to
- 19:26Speaker 10: sacrifice Jeff for your corny show. You'll have to get
- 19:28Speaker 10: yourself another actor.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Helen, where can I get an actor cornier than him?
- 19:33Speaker 10: Are there any further instructions, doctor?
- 19:35Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 19:36Speaker 14: Keep all conversation away from that play. Don't even mention
- 19:39Speaker 14: the words killer case.
- 19:40Speaker 10: Yes, doctor.
- 19:41Speaker 14: You see, it's his impersonation of Killer Cates that's brought
- 19:44Speaker 14: about this condition.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Basically, Jeff is.
- 19:46Speaker 14: A sensitive type with a natural antipathy to that sort
- 19:49Speaker 14: of character. all of which has resulted in these definite
- 19:52Speaker 14: symptoms of schizophrenia.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Uh, what?
- 19:55Speaker 5: Schizophrenia, the doctrine of two distinct ultimate substances.
- 19:59Speaker 9: Ah.
- 20:00Speaker 10: It's a disease of the.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Mind, Al. Holy smoke, how did he get it? Well,
- 20:05Speaker 4: I got to call up the newspapers. I'll tell them
- 20:06Speaker 4: that Jeff's got schizo... I'll tell them he's got two
- 20:10Speaker 4: ultimate substances. Who's that?
- 20:20Speaker 10: Just me, Jeff. I hope I didn't wake you.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Where are you going?
- 20:26Speaker 10: Just to open the window. My, this room's empty.
- 20:29Speaker 4: What's that?
- 20:30Speaker 10: Why, nothing, dear. Just a car backfiring.
- 20:33Speaker 4: What are you giving me? Those are gunshots. That must
- 20:36Speaker 4: be Scalise's mob.
- 20:38Speaker 10: Scalise's mob? Oh, darling, you're having another nightmare. Now get
- 20:42Speaker 10: right back in bed. The doctor said.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Come here, you. Oh, oh, oh, please.
- 20:46Speaker 10: Please, you're twisting my wrist.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Who sent you here?
- 20:49Speaker 10: Darling, darling, you're hysterical. I'll call the doctor.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Don't touch that phone.
- 20:52Speaker 10: Oh, please let me go.
- 20:55Speaker 5: I will when I get good and ready. Say, you're
- 21:01Speaker 5: not a bad-looking dish. What's your name?
- 21:11Speaker 10: Darling, it's me, Helen. Don't you even recognize me?
- 21:16Speaker 5: I never saw you before in my life. But I'm
- 21:19Speaker 5: going to make up for lost time. Come here, baby.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Give me a kiss.
- 21:29Speaker 10: Oh, darling, kiss me again.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Ha, ha, ha. Happens every time. Anyway, baby, that'll hold
- 21:47Speaker 5: you till I get back.
- 21:48Speaker 10: Get back? Where are you going?
- 21:49Speaker 5: What, do you think I am, a sucker? Think I'm
- 21:51Speaker 5: going to open up to you so you can tip
- 21:53Speaker 5: off the mob and put the finger on me? But I.
- 21:55Speaker 10: But, darling, what are you doing?
- 21:56Speaker 4: Come on, get in this closet.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Come on! But you can't... Let me out!
- 22:01Speaker 10: Let me out!
- 22:02Speaker 4: Shut up or I'll come in there and slug you.
- 22:06Speaker 4: That's better.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Now to get out of here. Who's that?
- 22:11Speaker 4: It's I, sir, Walter.
- 22:13Speaker 11: Oh, I didn't know you were up. Oh, dear, and
- 22:15Speaker 11: I was given orders not to disturb you.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Listen, you mug, I'm Killer Kate. I'm giving orders around.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Here, see? Very amusing, sir. Wipe that smile off your kisser. Oh, but.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Wipe it off!
- 22:27Speaker 11: Oh, you struck me, sir. This leaves me no alternative.
- 22:32Speaker 11: I leave for Reno in the morning.
- 22:41Speaker 4: What? I live there, you know. Shut up. Now, listen, you.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Where do they keep the scratch around here?
- 22:50Speaker 5: The what, sir?
- 22:51Speaker 4: The scratch, the molar, the money. The money?
- 22:53Speaker 11: So why it's in the safe?
- 22:54Speaker 4: Well, lead me to it. But, sir, you know where the.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Now, lead me to that safe and don't give me
- 23:00Speaker 5: no more of your lip.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Yes, sir. This way, sir.
- 23:06Speaker 11: There it is, sir, behind the picture.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Hey, wait a minute.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Who's that mug in the picture?
- 23:12Speaker 11: What's that?
- 23:14Speaker 4: Never mind.
- 23:14Speaker 5: I can read the nameplate. Jeff Morley, star of Stage
- 23:19Speaker 5: and Screen. What a conceited punk.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Now, watch the front door. Let me know if he
- 23:25Speaker 5: comes in.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Now, come on.
- 23:27Speaker 5: What's the combination of this safe?
- 23:28Speaker 11: I don't know, sir.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Get out of the way. Out of the way.
- 23:31Speaker 5: I can open this tin can with boxing gloves on.
- 23:36Speaker 4: There. A cent.
- 23:42Speaker 10: Ah, look at those bills.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Fifties, hundreds. What a haul!
- 23:45Speaker 11: But, sir, don't you understand... Shut up! It's for the
- 23:48Speaker 11: new refrigerator, sir.
- 23:50Speaker 4: I don't care what it's for. Now, turn around. Face
- 23:53Speaker 4: the wall. Yes, sir.
- 23:54Speaker 11: Sir, what are you going to do with that vase?
- 23:57Speaker 4: I'm going to.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Oh!
- 24:02Speaker 5: I guess I should have told him first. Well, that
- 24:06Speaker 5: takes care of him. Look out, Scalise. Here comes Killer Case.
- 24:20Speaker 10: And I got out of the closet, Dr. Elbron, just
- 24:22Speaker 10: in time to see Jeff driving away.
- 24:24Speaker 4: How do you like that, Doc? Held up his own
- 24:26Speaker 4: house and stole his own car. That's awesome. Now, Walters. Yes, Dr. Elbron?
- 24:32Speaker 4: Did Mr.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Morley give any indication of where he was going?
- 24:34Speaker 4: No, sir.
- 24:35Speaker 11: He was most irrational. He said he was Killer Kate,
- 24:38Speaker 11: and he asked me where we kept the money.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Well, what are we waiting for? Let's call the police.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Under no condition will we call the police.
- 24:43Speaker 10: But, Doctor, why not?
- 24:45Speaker 14: Because Jeff thinks he's Killer Kate. And what does Killer
- 24:48Speaker 14: Kate do to policemen?
- 24:49Speaker 4: He asks them where they want it. In the belly
- 24:51Speaker 4: or the... Exactly.
- 24:54Speaker 10: Oh, then we've got to find him ourselves.
- 24:55Speaker 8: At once.
- 24:56Speaker 10: Why, he's liable to hurt somebody.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Oh. Oh, my head. I wonder where I am. You're
- 25:11Speaker 4: Killer Kate, you lambo. You're Killer Kate. You're in Jersey.
- 25:14Speaker 4: The heat's on. You're walking the marambo. You're Killer Kate.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Killer Kate.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Killer Kate.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm Killer Kate.
- 25:21Speaker 4: The heat's on.
- 25:23Speaker 5: I got a glay low here in Jersey. Then I
- 25:26Speaker 5: take over the biggest nightclub in town.
- 25:28Speaker 4: What's that name? The marambo.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Yeah, the marambo.
- 25:33Speaker 4: That's it.
- 25:34Speaker 5: Hmm, what's this place?
- 25:39Speaker 2: Yes, sir?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Park your car.
- 25:41Speaker 5: What's the name of this joint?
- 25:43Speaker 2: The Pelican Club.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Well, I'm looking for the Maramba, the biggest nightclub in Jersey.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Maramba?
- 25:47Speaker 5: Never heard of it. This is the biggest nightclub in Jersey?
- 25:51Speaker 4: Pelican, eh?
- 25:52Speaker 5: Well, they changed their name. Well, they ain't fooling killer Cates.
- 25:56Speaker 5: I'm moving in.
- 25:57Speaker 4: I'll park your car for you. Oh, no, you don't.
- 26:00Speaker 4: See that car where it is? Keep the motor running. Slow.
- 26:04Speaker 5: I'm almost out of gas.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Yes. Were you looking for somebody? Who are you? I'm Mario,
- 26:19Speaker 4: the head waiter.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Well, I'm Killer Kate, your new boss, see? From now on,
- 26:24Speaker 5: you're taking orders from me.
- 26:25Speaker 4: I don't understand. Mr. Norton didn't mention anything about selling
- 26:28Speaker 4: the place. Norton? Who's Norton? He's the boss. Hey, cut
- 26:34Speaker 4: that out! I told you I'm the boy. Now get
- 26:37Speaker 4: out of my way. Hey, waiter! Waiter, come here. Yes, sir?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Who's that tomato out there singing? Peaches Mason, sir. She's
- 26:45Speaker 4: the star of the show.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Easy on the eye, ain't she? Waiter, get me a
- 26:52Speaker 5: double bourbon. I'll sit down here.
- 26:54Speaker 3: But, sir, this table.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Shut up and do like I told you.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 27:05Speaker 8: Mario.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yes, Miss Mason?
- 27:06Speaker 10: Who's that tourist at Mr.
- 27:07Speaker 8: Norton's table?
- 27:08Speaker 4: I don't know. He calls himself Killer Caves. He says
- 27:11Speaker 4: from now on, he was the boss.
- 27:13Speaker 8: Oh, the loud jerk. He almost ruined my number. Why
- 27:16Speaker 8: don't you throw him out?
- 27:17Speaker 4: You know Mr. Norton don't like any rough stuff when
- 27:19Speaker 4: the place is full of customers. Hey, waiter. Bring a
- 27:23Speaker 4: double bourbon before I tear this joint apart.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Hey, you.
- 27:26Speaker 8: What's the big idea?
- 27:27Speaker 5: Peaches Mason, eh? I like that name. Sit down, baby.
- 27:34Speaker 4: I want to talk to you.
- 27:35Speaker 8: Listen, mister, this is Joe Norton's table, and if you
- 27:38Speaker 8: know what's good for you... I never join the guests.
- 27:42Speaker 5: I said sit down.
- 27:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 27:43Speaker 8: Keep your voice down. Everybody's staring at us.
- 27:46Speaker 4: So what?
- 27:48Speaker 5: Let me give you a tip, sister. Keep your nose clean.
- 27:52Speaker 6: What?
- 27:53Speaker 5: Don't play dumb. You know what happened to Spangler, don't you?
- 27:57Speaker 5: At the bottom of the river with his feet in
- 27:58Speaker 5: a barrel of cement.
- 28:00Speaker 8: Cement?
- 28:01Speaker 5: Hard to get nowadays, but I got connections. You know, baby,
- 28:10Speaker 5: I like the way you.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Get up a bourbon, sir.
- 28:12Speaker 5: Set it right down here.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Well, baby, here's to you. Boy, that's good.
- 28:27Speaker 10: Well, ain't you gonna drink the rest of it?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Nah.
- 28:30Speaker 5: I always save a little to fill my lighter. Now, listen, baby.
- 28:36Speaker 4: I like your looks. See?
- 28:38Speaker 5: I like the way you stack up.
- 28:40Speaker 8: You're wasting your time, big boy, because I'm Joe Norton's girl.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Norton is through, washed up. I'm going to wrap up
- 28:46Speaker 5: this town, put it in my back pocket. Baby, you
- 28:49Speaker 5: just stick with me. You'll have a butler, three cars,
- 28:51Speaker 5: and a sealed skin coat. Now, all you got to
- 28:54Speaker 5: do is.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Excuse me, Mr. Mason, but Mr. Norton would like to
- 28:56Speaker 4: see this gentleman in his office.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Ah, Norton knows I mean business, eh?
- 29:02Speaker 4: Lead the way, punk.
- 29:04Speaker 10: Punk!
- 29:06Speaker 4: You heard me.
- 29:07Speaker 5: You heard me.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Get going.
- 29:10Speaker 5: So Norton's worried, eh? Well, they all worry when a
- 29:13Speaker 5: killer moves in.
- 29:15Speaker 4: A pelican club. I think I'll change that name. I
- 29:18Speaker 4: don't like it. I don't like a lot of things
- 29:20Speaker 4: around here. I don't even like... This is it. Come in.
- 29:27Speaker 6: Mr.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Norton, I'd like you to meet the new boss. The
- 29:29Speaker 4: gentleman I was telling you about.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Mr.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Cates. Well, step right in, Mr. Cates. That's all, Mario,
- 29:38Speaker 4: and close the door after you. Yes, sir. You're Norton, eh?
- 29:49Speaker 5: Who are these two mugs?
- 29:50Speaker 4: Oh, excuse me.
- 29:51Speaker 7: Allow me to introduce my two assistants, Lefty Ryan and
- 29:54Speaker 7: Steve Kapouras.
- 29:55Speaker 10: Charmed, I'm sure.
- 29:58Speaker 4: This is Untitled Air Publish. Mr.
- 30:03Speaker 7: Cates, I want to apologize for asking you to come
- 30:06Speaker 7: all the way back here, but you see, we don't
- 30:07Speaker 7: like to throw anybody out the front door.
- 30:09Speaker 4: It gives the place a bad name.
- 30:12Speaker 7: All right, let me throw this bum out in the alley.
- 30:14Speaker 4: This is indeed a rare privilege. Take your hands off
- 30:17Speaker 4: of me. Come on, you.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Anybody else feel like throwing me out?
- 30:25Speaker 3: Oh, what's up, guy, huh?
- 30:26Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Steve. All right, Cates, the back door's
- 30:29Speaker 4: right behind you. Now get out.
- 30:32Speaker 5: That gun don't scare me, Norton. I'm gonna walk over
- 30:36Speaker 5: there and take it away from you.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Stay where you are. I'm warning you.
- 30:41Speaker 5: You can't pull the trigger, Norton. You ain't got the guts.
- 30:46Speaker 5: I'm telling you for the last time. One more step
- 30:49Speaker 5: and I'll shoot.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 30:51Speaker 5: I'm the man who couldn't be killed. Give me that gun!
- 30:55Speaker 5: I got it, Norton. And Killer Cates ain't afraid to
- 30:59Speaker 5: use it.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Killer Cates. That name sounds familiar.
- 31:02Speaker 5: All right, it's familiar. You know something, Norton? I think
- 31:06Speaker 5: I'm going to like this new office. Hey, that's a
- 31:10Speaker 5: nice-looking safe you got there. Okay, Norton, open it.
- 31:13Speaker 4: But I... I said open it.
- 31:15Speaker 9: All right.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Don't hit me again. I'll do it. There. It's open. Well,
- 31:23Speaker 4: come on, come on. Hand over the money. Hey, you.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Come here and put this door in the satchel. I'll
- 31:29Speaker 5: be quick about it.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Is it all right, boss?
- 31:31Speaker 5: I'm the boss around here. Don't let him tell you, Steve.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Oh, okay. Well, that's all the money I got. Yeah?
- 31:39Speaker 5: What about that ten bucks?
- 31:40Speaker 4: Yeah, but I... Get it out! There's nothing in it.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Just a bunch of canceled checks. Well, get it out.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I'm taking everything. All right.
- 31:48Speaker 15: There.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 31:51Speaker 5: Now get down on your knees, Norton, and start praying.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Killer. Killer, please. Please, don't shoot. Oh, don't kill me.
- 31:58Speaker 4: I don't want to die. I'll do anything you say.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Only please don't kill me. Give me a break, will you?
- 32:06Speaker 5: You didn't give me a break, did you? When you
- 32:09Speaker 5: sent me up to the big house to rot in
- 32:10Speaker 5: a lousy cell. You weren't satisfied to take over my rackets.
- 32:14Speaker 5: You even had to steal my dame.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Me? But, killer, I didn't do any of those things.
- 32:18Speaker 4: You got me mixed up with some other guy. You
- 32:21Speaker 4: got to believe me, killer. I swear it wasn't me.
- 32:23Speaker 5: Where do you want it, Norton? In the belly or
- 32:25Speaker 5: the back?
- 32:29Speaker 10: No, no, no.
- 32:30Speaker 4: No, killer, no, please. I'm telling you the truth. I
- 32:34Speaker 4: didn't take your business. I opened this place myself six
- 32:37Speaker 4: months ago on a GI loan. Now, wait a minute.
- 32:43Speaker 4: And it's for Peaches. Peaches, I didn't know she was
- 32:45Speaker 4: your girl. That's right, killer. He's telling the truth.
- 32:48Speaker 5: Hey, there's something fishy around this.
- 32:50Speaker 4: No, no, killer, killer, please. Give me a chance. I'll
- 32:52Speaker 4: get out of town. I'll do anything you want. All right, Morton.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Okay, but I'm warning you. You come back, you get
- 32:58Speaker 5: the same thing that happened to Spangler. He's at the
- 33:00Speaker 5: bottom of the river with his feet in a barrel
- 33:02Speaker 5: of cement.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Cement?
- 33:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I got connections.
- 33:08Speaker 4: Okay, Norton, I'll blow. Yeah, thanks. Thanks, killer. I'll grab
- 33:11Speaker 4: the next train. I won't come back, killer. Honest, I won't.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Well, see that you don't. Now you, Steve, pick up
- 33:18Speaker 5: that satchel and come with me.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Okay, killer. You're the boss. Hey, killer, slow down, will you?
- 33:31Speaker 3: You're doing 80 miles an hour.
- 33:32Speaker 5: Don't worry, Steve. I'm going to grab that, count the
- 33:37Speaker 5: dough we took from North.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Okay, boss. It's all in thousand-dollar packages. There's ten of
- 33:42Speaker 3: them here.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Okay, take five for yourself.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Five Gs for me?
- 33:47Speaker 4: Sure.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Killer Kate's always splits 50-50 with the guys that work
- 33:51Speaker 5: for him. Yeah, but I wasn't working for you then.
- 33:54Speaker 5: You are now, ain't you?
- 33:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll say I am. Five Gs.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Oh, boy, am I happy.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Where's me harmonica?
- 34:06Speaker 4: Put that away.
- 34:07Speaker 5: I don't want no trouble with Petrillo. Can't put it away.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Gosh, five Gs. Wait till I tell the boys about this.
- 34:19Speaker 4: The boys?
- 34:20Speaker 9: The rest of Norton's mob. They'll all want to wait
- 34:22Speaker 9: for you now. Okay, well, get them together. Have them
- 34:25Speaker 9: bring their artillery. I'm going to take over this town,
- 34:29Speaker 9: and I'm going to start tonight. We pause now for station.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Identification. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Before our stars, Jack Benny and Gail Patrick, return in
- 35:12Speaker 6: Act Three of Killer Kate's, I'd like to present our
- 35:15Speaker 6: guest of the evening, an English girl from Australia, lovely
- 35:20Speaker 6: blonde Joan Winfield. Presentations hold no terror for Joan because
- 35:24Speaker 6: she's already made a bow before one of the most
- 35:27Speaker 6: famous audiences in the world, the court of the King
- 35:30Speaker 6: and Queen of England.
- 35:31Speaker 8: I'm afraid that was a little different, Mr.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Keeley.
- 35:33Speaker 10: I didn't have to do any talking.
- 35:35Speaker 4: I see.
- 35:36Speaker 5: What have you been doing since Warner Brothers induced you
- 35:38Speaker 5: to come to Hollywood?
- 35:39Speaker 16: Well, I've made seven pictures, and when I'm not before
- 35:41Speaker 16: the cameras, I'm visiting other sets.
- 35:43Speaker 6: Did you see the filming of Warner Brothers' new thriller,
- 35:46Speaker 6: the picture Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre have just finished?
- 35:49Speaker 10: The verdict?
- 35:50Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 35:50Speaker 16: Oh, yes, and it was so exciting. But what impressed
- 35:53Speaker 16: me especially on the Warner lot was the lavish sets
- 35:56Speaker 16: for their new musical, The Time, the Place, and the Girl.
- 35:58Speaker 16: The colors were so right.
- 35:59Speaker 5: That's important in Technicolor.
- 36:01Speaker 16: I was so interested, too, in the treadmill used for
- 36:03Speaker 16: rehearsing the dance numbers.
- 36:05Speaker 6: Well, interesting isn't the word Jack Carson and Dennis Morgan
- 36:08Speaker 6: would have used. They covered 20 miles a day on
- 36:11Speaker 6: that treadmill.
- 36:12Speaker 16: Well, I was amazed that Janice Page and Martha Vickers
- 36:15Speaker 16: wore stockings for all that rehearsing. In Australia during the war,
- 36:18Speaker 16: we saved stockings for special occasions.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Well, of course, Joan, the girls' stockings were luxed. That's
- 36:23Speaker 2: why they lasted so long. Girls often get as much
- 36:26Speaker 2: wear from one pair of stockings that are luxed as
- 36:28Speaker 2: they do from two pairs washed the wrong way.
- 36:30Speaker 16: Well, I do know luxed stockings last longer, Mr.
- 36:33Speaker 11: Kennedy.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Twice as long. A famous laboratory proved by strain tests.
- 36:37Speaker 2: They washed identical stockings two different ways. Some women use
- 36:41Speaker 2: a strong soap for stockings, you know. Well, stockings washed
- 36:44Speaker 2: that way broke down into runs in almost no time.
- 36:48Speaker 2: But the stockings that had been washed with Lux lasted
- 36:50Speaker 2: twice as long as the others. That extra wear is
- 36:53Speaker 2: as good as an extra pair.
- 36:54Speaker 10: You're so right, Mr.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Kennedy.
- 36:56Speaker 16: You can't imagine how wonderful it is to find a
- 36:58Speaker 16: box of Lux flakes in the store.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Yes, girls everywhere appreciate the extra stocking wear Lux gives them.
- 37:05Speaker 2: These days, we're not able to make all the Lux
- 37:07Speaker 2: women want, But we're doing our best to keep dealers supplied.
- 37:11Speaker 2: So keep asking for it. Here's Mr. Keeley at the microphone.
- 37:15Speaker 6: After the play, we'll invite Jack Benny to step out
- 37:18Speaker 6: of his role as Killer Cates and join us for
- 37:21Speaker 6: a brief chat with tonight's stars. Here they are in
- 37:24Speaker 6: Act Three. Jack Benny as Jeff Morley and Gail Patrick
- 37:28Speaker 6: as Helen. Four hours now, Helen and Dr. Elbrun have
- 37:38Speaker 6: searched in vain for Jeff. Back at home, they find
- 37:41Speaker 6: Al Brady waiting for them, wildly flourishing a newspaper.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Doc, have you read the papers?
- 37:47Speaker 3: The papers?
- 37:48Speaker 8: No, Al.
- 37:48Speaker 10: What do they say?
- 37:49Speaker 4: Listen to this. Daring thugs menaced Daleville, New Jersey. Reign
- 37:53Speaker 4: of terror gripped city. According to one of the victims,
- 37:55Speaker 4: David Franklin, gas station owner, he had just locked up
- 37:58Speaker 4: for the night when four thugs broke in and demanded
- 38:00Speaker 4: that he hand over all the money in his cash register.
- 38:02Speaker 4: When Franklin resisted, the leader of the thugs threatened him
- 38:05Speaker 4: with the same thing that happened to Spangler, asserting that
- 38:08Speaker 4: Spangler was at the bottom of the river with his
- 38:10Speaker 4: feet continuing on page two. with his feet in a
- 38:15Speaker 4: barrel of cement. The victim also mentioned that the killer
- 38:19Speaker 4: mumbled something about bumping off 11 people so he could
- 38:22Speaker 4: be first in line for a new refrigerator.
- 38:26Speaker 10: Spangler with his feet in cement. Well, that dialogue's right
- 38:29Speaker 10: out of the play.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Sure, sure, that's Jeff, all right. He really believes he's
- 38:32Speaker 4: Killer Kate.
- 38:33Speaker 10: Oh, we gotta stop him before he does any more damage. Oh,
- 38:35Speaker 10: poor Jeff.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Come on, we'll use my car. It's only an hour's
- 38:37Speaker 4: drive to Daleville. Gosh, Jeff must have made a pile
- 38:41Speaker 4: of dough with those gangsters.
- 38:42Speaker 10: I hope nothing happens to my husband.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Hope nothing happens to my 10%. Well, Killer, how.
- 38:53Speaker 5: Do you like the house? Not bad, Steve. Think we'll
- 38:56Speaker 5: spend a little lettuce and fix it up. Put bulletproof
- 39:00Speaker 5: glass in the windows, get some steel shutters and doors,
- 39:02Speaker 5: and we'll have the classiest joint on the south side.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Wouldn't Norton be burned up if he knew we was
- 39:06Speaker 4: using his summer house for a hideaway?
- 39:09Speaker 8: Well, I sure got to hand it to you, killer.
- 39:12Speaker 8: You certainly get action in a hurry. First you take
- 39:14Speaker 8: over Norton's club, then his gang, and now you've even
- 39:17Speaker 8: got his house.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 5: You left out something else, Peaches.
- 39:21Speaker 8: Yeah? What's that?
- 39:23Speaker 5: I got his girl, too. Come here, baby. Let the
- 39:28Speaker 5: killer take off some of that lipstick.
- 39:35Speaker 4: Oh.
- 39:36Speaker 8: Killer. You're terrific.
- 39:45Speaker 5: And there's more where that came from.
- 39:49Speaker 4: Now, look, baby.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Nobody knows you're true in with us, see? So you're
- 39:52Speaker 5: running the case to club. Give it to once over.
- 39:55Speaker 5: I want to make sure that Mario's keeping his nose clean.
- 39:57Speaker 8: Okay, killer.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Wait a minute. Yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 5: What's this tin box here?
- 40:01Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing we took from Norton's safe, killer.
- 40:03Speaker 3: You know, he said it was just canceled checks.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Well, let's have a look at it.
- 40:07Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 40:08Speaker 5: That check's all right. Pay to the order of John Graham, $ 5, 000. Signed,
- 40:15Speaker 5: Joe Norton. Pay to John Graham, $ 2, 500. John Graham 3000. Say,
- 40:22Speaker 5: who is this mug John Graham?
- 40:24Speaker 8: Oh, he's the mayor. Norton was paying him off.
- 40:26Speaker 4: What?
- 40:27Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 40:28Speaker 5: Hey, then this is the best haul yet. Give me
- 40:30Speaker 5: an envelope.
- 40:30Speaker 3: What are you going to do, boss?
- 40:31Speaker 5: I'm going to send these checks to the district attorney.
- 40:33Speaker 4: What? Sure.
- 40:35Speaker 5: When the DA gets these checks, he'll go right after
- 40:37Speaker 5: the mayor. The politicians will start fighting among themselves. The
- 40:40Speaker 5: cops won't know which way to turn. I can put
- 40:42Speaker 5: this town in my back pocket.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Here, mail this, Peaches.
- 40:45Speaker 8: Oh, gee, killer.
- 40:46Speaker 10: Oh, you think of everything.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:50Speaker 5: I just thought of something else. Before you go, let
- 40:55Speaker 5: me take off some more of that lipstick.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 41:00Speaker 5: I like the taste of that. You keep putting it
- 41:03Speaker 5: on and I'll keep taking it off. Come on, let's
- 41:10Speaker 5: do it again.
- 41:11Speaker 7: Come on.
- 41:16Speaker 4: I'm telling you, Graham, I'm on the spot. You've got
- 41:18Speaker 4: to get me off. You can do it. You're the mayor.
- 41:19Speaker 15: I'm sorry, Norton. Election's only two weeks away. I have
- 41:22Speaker 15: my own troubles, not to mention the gambling ship. You're
- 41:24Speaker 15: going to have a lot more trouble if this killer, Kate,
- 41:25Speaker 15: stays on the loose. I'm supposed to be out of
- 41:27Speaker 15: town right now. I'm liable to be bumped off any minute.
- 41:29Speaker 15: We all have to take a bath sometime, Joe. Maybe
- 41:31Speaker 15: it's your turn to be washed up.
- 41:32Speaker 4: Oh, yeah? Well, if I go to the cleaners, you're
- 41:34Speaker 4: going with me. What do you mean?
- 41:36Speaker 7: Wouldn't the DA be surprised to find our honest mayor
- 41:38Speaker 7: gets 15% of all the take in this town?
- 41:40Speaker 4: How's he going to find out? As a little matter of.
- 41:42Speaker 7: A few canceled checks that I made out to you,
- 41:44Speaker 7: they're going to look very pretty in court.
- 41:45Speaker 4: You wouldn't dare turn in those checks.
- 41:47Speaker 5: You're in it as.
- 41:48Speaker 4: Deep as I am. Killer Cates isn't, and he's got
- 41:50Speaker 4: the checks.
- 41:50Speaker 1: What?
- 41:51Speaker 4: You heard me. He stole them out of my safe.
- 41:52Speaker 15: This DA's been gunning for me for five years, and
- 41:55Speaker 15: if he ever gets his hands on those checks, huh,
- 41:57Speaker 15: can't let the police get hold of them either.
- 41:59Speaker 4: I don't trust the commissioner. I think he's honest.
- 42:04Speaker 7: There's only one way to do it, but it's going
- 42:05Speaker 7: to cost a few grand. I'll have to put a
- 42:07Speaker 7: new mob together and get killer case.
- 42:09Speaker 4: How much will it take? Oh, about 10 Gs. Very well.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Just don't spend any more than you have to. Remember,
- 42:14Speaker 4: it's the taxpayer's money.
- 42:21Speaker 8: So if you're smart, Mario, you'll watch your step around
- 42:24Speaker 8: this club.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Don't worry about me, Peaches. I don't want my feet
- 42:26Speaker 4: in the cement, even if it's Grumman's Chinese. What? Did
- 42:31Speaker 4: you forget what happened to Spangler? Oh. Pardon me, but
- 42:34Speaker 4: I wonder if you could give us some information. We're
- 42:36Speaker 4: looking for a man who calls himself Killer Cates.
- 42:38Speaker 8: What made you think you'd find him here?
- 42:40Speaker 10: We've been to every nightclub in town. You see, we
- 42:42Speaker 10: have reason to believe he'd be at one of them.
- 42:43Speaker 4: Huh?
- 42:44Speaker 8: Who are you?
- 42:45Speaker 10: I'm his wife.
- 42:45Speaker 4: His wife?
- 42:47Speaker 8: Never told me he was married.
- 42:48Speaker 10: Oh, then you know him. Oh, please, tell me, where
- 42:50Speaker 10: is he?
- 42:50Speaker 8: If I find out he's been.
- 42:52Speaker 5: Miss, it's vitally important that we find this man immediately.
- 42:54Speaker 4: You see, there are a few things we have to
- 42:56Speaker 4: straighten out with him.
- 42:57Speaker 8: Yeah, and I got a few things to straighten out
- 42:59Speaker 8: with him myself. Okay, come along, follow me.
- 43:01Speaker 4: The bitches you're playing with, the dynamite.
- 43:03Speaker 8: Killer or no killer, I gotta know where I stand.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Peaches.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Hmm, what a doll.
- 43:07Speaker 4: There's nobody in the play like that. Jeff must be
- 43:10Speaker 4: ad libbing. Well, he can't be altogether out of his mind. No, sir.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Who is it?
- 43:25Speaker 8: Me, Peaches.
- 43:27Speaker 3: It's about time you got back.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 8: Come on in, Mrs.
- 43:30Speaker 10: Cates.
- 43:30Speaker 8: Mrs.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Cates! Hey, wait a minute. Who's the company?
- 43:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:35Speaker 5: Who's the twist in the two mugs?
- 43:36Speaker 13: Jeff.
- 43:37Speaker 10: Oh, Jeff, it's me, Helen. Don't you even recognize me?
- 43:42Speaker 4: Jeff?
- 43:43Speaker 5: Nobody here by that name. Say, I remember you now.
- 43:49Speaker 5: Here's Scalise's mouth.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Jeff, snap out of it.
- 43:52Speaker 5: Please, Jeff.
- 43:53Speaker 10: It's Helen, your wife. The girl you married. Think back.
- 43:57Speaker 10: Remember our honeymoon. Niagara Falls. Those gin rummy games.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Hey, what is this?
- 44:06Speaker 8: What about it, killer? What about that line you was
- 44:08Speaker 8: handing me about us getting married?
- 44:10Speaker 4: Start talking. Shut up.
- 44:11Speaker 8: I'm not shutting up until I find out where I stand. Oh,
- 44:13Speaker 8: you and your seal skin coat.
- 44:15Speaker 5: Button your lip before I let you have it. Ought
- 44:18Speaker 5: to do it anyway for bringing these monkeys in here.
- 44:20Speaker 10: Oh, Jeff, please.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Helen. Let me do the talking. Now, Jeff,
- 44:23Speaker 4: you're going to listen to me. And you're going to
- 44:24Speaker 4: listen to this.
- 44:25Speaker 9: Out like a light killer, you sure pack a mean wallop.
- 44:32Speaker 5: What do you want to do with these other phonies?
- 44:33Speaker 4: Throw them out.
- 44:34Speaker 5: Wait a minute, Jeff.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Try to concentrate.
- 44:36Speaker 5: This is Dr.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Elberin talking to you.
- 44:38Speaker 3: I'm your friend.
- 44:39Speaker 10: And I'm Helen. Look at me, darling. Look at me.
- 44:43Speaker 5: I am looking at you. You're not bad.
- 44:48Speaker 4: Steve.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah, killer?
- 44:50Speaker 5: I changed my mind. Just throw these two mugs out.
- 44:53Speaker 5: I'm going to keep the dame.
- 44:54Speaker 10: Oh, no, you don't.
- 44:55Speaker 8: I say she goes.
- 44:55Speaker 10: You stay out of this, you cheap.
- 44:57Speaker 5: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. You don't have to fight, girl.
- 45:01Speaker 5: There's enough of me for both of you. Well, I
- 45:03Speaker 5: don't think so.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Hey, what's that? What's that? Wait a minute. It's Martin.
- 45:08Speaker 4: He's got a mob with him. Martin, eh? I told
- 45:10Speaker 4: him to get out of town. He wants action. He
- 45:12Speaker 4: came to the right place.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Yeah, stay away from that window.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Oh.
- 45:17Speaker 8: Jeff.
- 45:18Speaker 4: Oh, Jeff. They got the killer.
- 45:20Speaker 10: Has he hit Dad?
- 45:21Speaker 4: I don't know yet.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Oh, Dr.
- 45:22Speaker 10: Elbrun, help me take Jeff into the other room.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Hey, Peaches, did you steer Norton's mob over here?
- 45:26Speaker 8: No, no, I didn't, Steve. Honestly, I didn't.
- 45:28Speaker 5: Hey, look, you've got to believe me. And we'll talk
- 45:30Speaker 5: about that later.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Stay with him, boys. We can't let the killer down.
- 45:33Speaker 4: Here, here. We're just laying down on the couch.
- 45:36Speaker 7: There.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Dr. Elbrun.
- 45:37Speaker 5: Is Jeff.
- 45:38Speaker 8: Is he hurt badly?
- 45:39Speaker 4: It's a flesh wound. A bullet grazed his temple. Oh, look.
- 45:42Speaker 10: He's coming, too.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Oh.
- 45:43Speaker 8: Oh.
- 45:45Speaker 2: My head.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Jeff.
- 45:48Speaker 10: Are you all right?
- 45:49Speaker 2: Helen, get a glass of water.
- 45:50Speaker 10: Yes, doctor.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Oh. What's this? I'm bleeding.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Now, take it easy, Jeff.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Take it easy.
- 45:57Speaker 5: It's only a scratch.
- 45:58Speaker 4: You'll be all right.
- 45:59Speaker 10: Here's the water, doctor.
- 45:59Speaker 4: Here, thanks.
- 46:00Speaker 5: Now, take this pill, Jeff.
- 46:01Speaker 2: It'll make you feel better.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Helen. Dr. Albert.
- 46:08Speaker 7: Jeff.
- 46:09Speaker 10: Oh, doctor, he's himself again.
- 46:11Speaker 5: A sudden shock did it. Now, how do you feel now, Jeff? Gee,
- 46:14Speaker 5: I had the most terrible nightmare. I dreamt that I
- 46:17Speaker 5: was Killer Cates and I went to New Jersey. Met
- 46:20Speaker 5: a man named, uh, Norton. Got mixed up in a
- 46:24Speaker 5: gang war.
- 46:25Speaker 4: He was awful. Jeff, it.
- 46:28Speaker 10: it wasn't a dream.
- 46:30Speaker 4: What? No dream?
- 46:33Speaker 2: No, Jeff.
- 46:34Speaker 5: You actually did all those things. You were out of
- 46:35Speaker 5: your mind.
- 46:37Speaker 4: What's the noise?
- 46:38Speaker 5: What's the shot?
- 46:39Speaker 3: It's Norton's men.
- 46:40Speaker 4: They're shooting at us.
- 46:41Speaker 10: Your gang's outside in the other room.
- 46:42Speaker 4: Well, what are we going to do? We'll all be killed.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Where's Brady?
- 46:44Speaker 5: Get Brady.
- 46:45Speaker 4: He always knows what to do.
- 46:46Speaker 5: I'm afraid he can't help us now.
- 46:47Speaker 3: He can't help us.
- 46:48Speaker 5: You're a killer, Kate.
- 46:48Speaker 10: You knocked him out.
- 46:49Speaker 3: There's only one thing to do, Jeff.
- 46:51Speaker 5: You've got to go out there and pretend you're Killer Kate. Me?
- 46:53Speaker 4: It's our only chance to get out of this mess.
- 46:55Speaker 7: What?
- 46:55Speaker 4: But... I can't do it. I'm liable to get killed.
- 46:59Speaker 10: Doctor, we can't send Jeff out there.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Don't you see?
- 47:01Speaker 14: If those men find out that Jeff isn't Killer Cates,
- 47:03Speaker 14: their fearless leader who got them into this predicament, they'll
- 47:06Speaker 14: turn on him in a second.
- 47:08Speaker 10: He's right, Jeff. You have to go through with it.
- 47:10Speaker 4: But what can I do? I'm a coward. I'm not
- 47:13Speaker 4: even a brave coward. I mean, I'm afraid.
- 47:15Speaker 14: Get out there and try to call off this gang war.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Make peace with Norton. Give him back his gang, his nightclub.
- 47:20Speaker 10: And his girl.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Promise him anything that will get us out of here alive.
- 47:23Speaker 10: Can you do it, Jeff?
- 47:25Speaker 5: Sure I can.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I'm an actor. I'll give them the best performance they've
- 47:28Speaker 4: ever seen. Give me that gun.
- 47:31Speaker 5: Now, I'm Killer Kate, see? The man who couldn't be killed.
- 47:35Speaker 5: From now on, I'm giving orders around here, see? How'd
- 47:39Speaker 5: you like that?
- 47:40Speaker 10: Oh, that's fine, Jeff. But you better use two guns.
- 47:43Speaker 10: Your hand was on your hip again.
- 47:46Speaker 4: Now, go on out there, Jeff.
- 47:47Speaker 10: And darling, please be careful.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Now we'll show Norton who's born.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Yeah, give it to him.
- 47:57Speaker 3: I mean, give it to him.
- 47:58Speaker 4: We'll wipe out every one of them. What's in the house?
- 48:02Speaker 8: Stop him, boys, stop him.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Don't let him in.
- 48:04Speaker 5: For my sake, boys, you've got to protect.
- 48:05Speaker 4: The old killer. Save me.
- 48:07Speaker 10: There's something wrong with the killer, isn't there?
- 48:09Speaker 5: Yeah, not once in the last half hour has he
- 48:11Speaker 5: mentioned what happened to Spangler.
- 48:12Speaker 4: Don't stand there gossiping. Shoot back. All right, nobody move.
- 48:17Speaker 4: We've got you covered.
- 48:18Speaker 3: Oh, okay, you win, Norton.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Drop your guns. Well, you're not so tough now, are you, killer? Look, Mr.
- 48:25Speaker 11: Norton, there's been a great mistake.
- 48:27Speaker 4: I'm not really a killer at all.
- 48:29Speaker 5: I'm an actor.
- 48:30Speaker 4: What are you trying to pull?
- 48:31Speaker 10: That's right, Mr.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Norton.
- 48:33Speaker 10: I can prove it. I'm his wife.
- 48:34Speaker 4: And I'm his doctor.
- 48:35Speaker 14: I'm certified this man was suffering from schizophrenia and not
- 48:38Speaker 14: accountable for his actions.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it, that's it.
- 48:40Speaker 4: My name is really Schizophrenia.
- 48:41Speaker 5: I mean, I mean, Jeff Schitze.
- 48:43Speaker 4: I mean, Schitze Morley. I mean, look, how could I
- 48:46Speaker 4: be a killer? It's only a joke.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Please, please believe me.
- 48:51Speaker 4: You can't talk your way out of this. Hey, what's this?
- 48:55Speaker 4: Hiding behind a couch, huh? Come on out, peaches.
- 48:58Speaker 8: Joe, Joe, you gotta listen to me. I was for
- 49:00Speaker 8: you all the time.
- 49:00Speaker 4: Get up, you little double-crosser. I'll take care of you later. Please, please, Mr.
- 49:03Speaker 8: Norton.
- 49:04Speaker 5: I'll do anything you want. I'll give you anything if
- 49:06Speaker 5: you'll only let me out of here.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Believe me, I'm not Killer Kate. Shut up! Yes, sir. Now,
- 49:11Speaker 4: where are those canceled checks you stole from my safe?
- 49:13Speaker 8: Checks?
- 49:14Speaker 5: I don't remember any checks, sir.
- 49:15Speaker 8: He's lying, Joe. I know where they are. The killer
- 49:18Speaker 8: mailed them to the D.A. this afternoon.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Then they've been already picked up. They must be in
- 49:21Speaker 4: the post office by now. What are we doing now, Joe?
- 49:23Speaker 4: We've got to get those checks before they reach the D.A.
- 49:24Speaker 4: We're going to crack the post office. The post office? But, Joe,
- 49:27Speaker 4: that's federal stuff. We don't want to fool around with
- 49:29Speaker 4: that federal stuff. Don't worry. We're not going to do it. Hey, you. Who, me? Yeah, you.
- 49:38Speaker 4: you're going to crack the post office.
- 49:40Speaker 5: No, no, no, no.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Helen, doctor, don't let him take me.
- 49:43Speaker 12: Ouch.
- 49:44Speaker 7: I'm doing the slapping now. Let me take these people downstairs,
- 49:47Speaker 7: lock them in the cellar.
- 49:48Speaker 4: Come on, come on, everybody. Get moving.
- 49:50Speaker 8: What about me, Joe? You're going to take me with you,
- 49:52Speaker 8: ain't you?
- 49:53Speaker 7: No, no, Peaches, you and me, we're through. Now, come on, killer.
- 49:56Speaker 7: You're going to crack the post office and get those
- 49:58Speaker 7: canceled checks.
- 49:59Speaker 4: I won't do it. I won't, I tell you. Now,
- 50:00Speaker 4: put down that gun. What's the matter, killer? Are you yellow? No. No,
- 50:04Speaker 4: I'm not yellow. Then why are you shivering? It's that
- 50:07Speaker 4: darn cold strike. Isn't it awful? You know, personally, I think...
- 50:11Speaker 4: Shut up. Yes, sir. Come on, boys, let's go. Goodbye, peaches.
- 50:21Speaker 8: Oh, he thinks he's through with me, huh? We'll see
- 50:23Speaker 8: about that. I'm going to kill two birds with one
- 50:26Speaker 8: phone call.
- 50:28Speaker 4: Hello?
- 50:29Speaker 8: Operator, get me the police department. Push me around, will they?
- 50:33Speaker 10: Hello.
- 50:34Speaker 8: Look, I'm giving you a tip. Killer Cates and Joan
- 50:37Speaker 8: Norton are on their way downtown to hold up the
- 50:39Speaker 8: post office.
- 50:40Speaker 4: What?
- 50:41Speaker 8: Oh, never mind who this is. Just a very dear
- 50:44Speaker 8: friend of theirs.
- 50:46Speaker 4: How long has he been in the post office, Steve?
- 50:52Speaker 10: Fifteen minutes.
- 50:53Speaker 5: Long enough to get those canceled checks.
- 50:54Speaker 4: Come on, boys. We're going in and get him. All right, killer,
- 51:03Speaker 4: your time is up. Wait a minute. Wait a minute, Norton.
- 51:06Speaker 5: I've been looking all through these mailbags. I can't find
- 51:08Speaker 5: the canceled checks.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Honest, I can't. Where do you want it, killer, in
- 51:11Speaker 4: the belly or in the back? In the belly.
- 51:13Speaker 12: In the back.
- 51:14Speaker 4: I mean, any place.
- 51:15Speaker 5: I'm ticklish in both places.
- 51:17Speaker 4: Honest, I couldn't find the checks. What's that you got
- 51:19Speaker 4: in your hands? Just some old letters I found. Let
- 51:22Speaker 4: me see them.
- 51:23Speaker 15: Hmm.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I can't stand Jack Benny because... I can't stand him either. Honest,
- 51:28Speaker 4: I can't. Honest, I can't. All right, killer, this is
- 51:31Speaker 4: your last chance. I haven't got a chance. Okay, okay,
- 51:36Speaker 4: don't shoot. You got us. Run him on, men. Jordan,
- 51:39Speaker 4: where's Killer Cates? There he is on the floor. Looks
- 51:41Speaker 4: like we got him, Chief. Ah, yep, that's Killer Cates,
- 51:45Speaker 4: all right. And he's supposed to be a tough guy.
- 51:48Speaker 4: What do you mean, Chief?
- 51:49Speaker 3: Isn't he dead?
- 51:50Speaker 4: Dead nothing. He fainted.
- 51:59Speaker 5: Anyway, Helen, as soon as the shooting started, I pretended
- 52:01Speaker 5: I was hit and.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Dropped to the floor.
- 52:04Speaker 10: The chief of police said you fainted.
- 52:05Speaker 4: I was only acting.
- 52:06Speaker 10: Well, your acting was so good, it took them four
- 52:08Speaker 10: hours to bring you to.
- 52:10Speaker 5: Well, I might have overacted a little, you know. Jeff,
- 52:13Speaker 5: are you sure you're well enough to do the show tonight?
- 52:15Speaker 5: Never felt better in my life, Doctor. You know, somehow
- 52:18Speaker 5: I'm looking forward to playing Killer Cates again. I guess
- 52:20Speaker 5: it's because I feel that now I've actually lived the part.
- 52:24Speaker 10: Jeff, I'll never forget the way you kissed me when
- 52:26Speaker 10: you thought you were Killer Cates.
- 52:29Speaker 5: Then let's refresh your memory, Ellen. Do you mean like that?
- 52:33Speaker 10: Well, no. But I'd rather have you this way.
- 52:36Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 52:38Speaker 10: Jeff, I'm so glad nothing happened to you because... Because... What, Helen?
- 52:45Speaker 4: Well.
- 52:48Speaker 5: Dr.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Eutens. Doctor?
- 52:51Speaker 3: Doctor, what is it?
- 52:53Speaker 5: While you were gone, they delivered the new refrigerator.
- 52:55Speaker 4: Oh, goody! Come on, let's make some ice cream.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Our stars will return for their curtain calls in a moment.
- 53:14Speaker 2: You look first in with knowledge, Sally.
- 53:16Speaker 10: Did you know, Mr. Kennedy, that once it was a
- 53:18Speaker 10: great honor to take care of worms?
- 53:20Speaker 2: What kind of bait is this?
- 53:22Speaker 10: Well, there's a tradition that back in 500 B.C. in China,
- 53:25Speaker 10: the court ladies used to draw lots, and the lucky
- 53:28Speaker 10: ones could take care of the silkworms in the court
- 53:30Speaker 10: silkworm nursery.
- 53:31Speaker 2: I know the Chinese were the first people to reel
- 53:33Speaker 2: silk off the cocoons.
- 53:34Speaker 10: And were probably the first people to wear any sort
- 53:36Speaker 10: of silk under things, too.
- 53:38Speaker 2: It's too bad they didn't have Luxe flakes then to
- 53:40Speaker 2: take care of their silks and underthings.
- 53:42Speaker 10: But aren't we lucky to have Luxe?
- 53:44Speaker 2: I'm sure you are, especially now that there's so much
- 53:46Speaker 2: pretty lingerie back in the stores again.
- 53:48Speaker 10: Mmm, real silk and the most luscious lacy rayons. I
- 53:52Speaker 10: wouldn't dream of washing them any way but the Luxe way.
- 53:55Speaker 2: And that pays, Sally, because Luxe care keeps underthings color-fresh
- 53:58Speaker 2: and lovely three times as long. The Luxe people have
- 54:01Speaker 2: actual tests made by an impartial laboratory to back up
- 54:05Speaker 2: that statement. When they compared the luxed slips and 90s
- 54:08Speaker 2: with those washed the wrong way with a strong soap,
- 54:11Speaker 2: they found an amazing difference. The luxed ones were so
- 54:14Speaker 2: much brighter and newer looking. Back to Mr. Keeley and
- 54:18Speaker 2: our stars.
- 54:20Speaker 5: It's time for our stars to take a bow. I'm
- 54:22Speaker 5: right here, Bill. Jack, please, let me finish.
- 54:27Speaker 6: It's curtain call time, and here are the stars who
- 54:30Speaker 6: gave us such a thrilling evening of suspense and drama.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Jack Benny and Gail Patrick. You know, Jack, now that
- 54:43Speaker 6: it's over, I can honestly say you gave us a
- 54:45Speaker 6: superb example of dramatic acting.
- 54:48Speaker 4: Really brilliant.
- 54:49Speaker 5: Well, thanks, Bill. I guess there's no room for argument there. Now,
- 54:54Speaker 5: do I get to keep my soap?
- 54:56Speaker 3: You certainly do.
- 54:58Speaker 10: Jack, may I say something, too?
- 55:00Speaker 4: Certainly, Gail. What is it?
- 55:01Speaker 10: You ought to play more romantic roles in pictures.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Me, romantic roles?
- 55:04Speaker 10: Sure, Jack. When you kissed me, it was wonderful.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Really? Yes.
- 55:09Speaker 10: When it comes to kissing, you could teach a lot
- 55:11Speaker 10: to Robert Taylor and Clark Gable. It's their own power.
- 55:14Speaker 5: I know, but I'd feel so silly kissing them. Oh, say, Bill,
- 55:20Speaker 5: as long as you like my work so much, I've
- 55:22Speaker 5: got another great script, a magnificent dramatic piece for next week.
- 55:27Speaker 11: You mean for Lux?
- 55:28Speaker 5: No, for money.
- 55:29Speaker 4: I mean for the Lux Radio Theater, yes.
- 55:31Speaker 5: But, Jack, we've already got a play in cast for
- 55:34Speaker 5: next week. Well, maybe you could postpone them and use
- 55:36Speaker 5: my play instead. It's another great thriller. I play another
- 55:39Speaker 5: fellow who's cold, calculating, ruthless.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Ruthless.
- 55:43Speaker 5: Ruthless, yeah, ruthless. I always make that same mistake.
- 55:46Speaker 6: But, Jack, next week is the night before Christmas Eve,
- 55:49Speaker 6: and naturally, we're bringing our audience something very much in
- 55:53Speaker 6: the holiday spirit.
- 55:54Speaker 10: What's it going to be, Bill?
- 55:55Speaker 6: A bright and sparkling musical starring one of the most
- 55:58Speaker 6: popular singers in America, Dick Haynes. Co-stars with Dick are
- 56:04Speaker 6: two of our favorites, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Sullivan, appearing
- 56:09Speaker 6: in 20th Century Fox's recent screen hit, Do You Love Me?
- 56:14Speaker 6: It's a story of comedy, music, and romance, with Dick
- 56:18Speaker 6: Hames bringing you the songs that helped to make the
- 56:20Speaker 6: screenplay so successful.
- 56:22Speaker 10: Oh, it sounds like a wonderful play for the holidays, Bill.
- 56:25Speaker 10: I'm sure your audience will love it.
- 56:26Speaker 5: I agree, but how about my play, Bill? What about the.
- 56:29Speaker 4: Week after next?
- 56:30Speaker 10: You have that set, too, haven't you, Bill?
- 56:31Speaker 4: That's right.
- 56:32Speaker 5: Well, how about the week after that? Jack, I'm afraid
- 56:36Speaker 5: we're all bulked up for the third week, too.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Well, look, Bill.
- 56:40Speaker 5: Will you call me any time in the next few months?
- 56:43Speaker 5: I'll be waiting to hear from you.
- 56:44Speaker 4: Sure, Jack. Do I have your number?
- 56:47Speaker 5: You don't need my number. I'll be waiting in the wings.
- 56:51Speaker 4: Okay, Jack.
- 56:52Speaker 5: And for tonight, at least, our most sincere thanks. Good night.
- 56:55Speaker 10: Good night.
- 56:56Speaker 4: Good night, Bill.
- 56:57Speaker 5: Oh, Bill, Bill, by the way, I don't like to
- 56:59Speaker 5: bring this up, but it's close to the holidays and
- 57:03Speaker 5: every little bit helps, so... Well, you know, haven't I
- 57:06Speaker 5: got something coming to me for... Tonight's performance?
- 57:10Speaker 4: Oh, yes, Jack.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Where do you want it?
- 57:12Speaker 4: In the abdomen or in the back? In the side pocket.
- 57:16Speaker 5: Good night, Jack.
- 57:20Speaker 11: Good night, Jack and Jane.
- 57:27Speaker 6: Lever Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Flakes, join me
- 57:31Speaker 6: in inviting you to be with us again next Monday
- 57:33Speaker 6: evening when the Lux Radio Theater presents Maureen O'Hara, Dick Hames,
- 57:38Speaker 6: and Barry Sullivan in Do You Love Me? This is
- 57:42Speaker 6: William Keeley saying goodnight to you from Hollywood. It's pretty
- 57:51Speaker 6: good to find more meat in the stores these days,
- 57:53Speaker 6: isn't it? Well, that means you'll have more used fat
- 57:56Speaker 6: to turn in for cash. Now, there are two good
- 57:58Speaker 6: things about that. You'll get more money because lots of
- 58:00Speaker 6: dealers are paying higher prices for used fats... And besides that,
- 58:04Speaker 6: you're helping to make the things you want. Soap, as
- 58:06Speaker 6: well as cars, refrigerators, electrical appliances, and such things. So,
- 58:11Speaker 6: long as the oil supply stays short, please save every
- 58:14Speaker 6: drop of used fat and.
- 58:15Speaker 2: Turn it in. Gail Patrick will soon be seen in
- 58:17Speaker 2: Republic Pictures' The Plainsman and the Lady. Heard in our
- 58:21Speaker 2: cast tonight were Alan Reed as Brady, Gerald Moore as Norton,
- 58:24Speaker 2: Gigi Pearson as Peaches, Gail Gordon as Dr. Elberon, Norman
- 58:28Speaker 2: Field as the mayor, and Eric Snowden, Herbert Bygren, Edwin Max,
- 58:32Speaker 2: Eddie Marr, Ed Emerson, Jane Novello, Dick Ryan, Ken Christie,
- 58:36Speaker 2: Charles Seal, and Franklin Parker. Our music was directed by
- 58:39Speaker 2: Louis Silvers. This program is broadcast to our men and
- 58:42Speaker 2: women overseas through cooperation with the Armed Forces Radio Service.
- 58:47Speaker 2: And this is your announcer, John Milton Kennedy, reminding you
- 58:50Speaker 2: to tune in again next Monday night to hear Do
- 58:54Speaker 2: You Love Me? with Dick Hames, Maureen O'Hara, and Barry Sullivan.
- 59:02Speaker 10: Rely on Spry, S-P-R-Y.
- 59:06Speaker 5: Yes, it's Spry for the most delicious Christmas eggnog pie
- 59:09Speaker 5: you ever tasted.
- 59:10Speaker 10: See the Spry ad in December women's magazines for the
- 59:13Speaker 10: amazing can't-fail way to make flaky tender pastry every time.
- 59:18Speaker 8: You'll hear him say.
- 59:19Speaker 5: Mmm, wonderful.
- 59:21Speaker 4: The reason why, S-P-R-Y.
