- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way, hey?
- 0:28Everybody, good morning. So a few months back, probably,
- 0:32I think it was about March, I made this decision that on the
- 0:35edge of our water garden, I was going to do some flowers.
- 0:40I wanted to test it and see if I could make it because that area
- 0:43is really tough. It's the part where when we were
- 0:47building the house on the farm that they dumped a ton of sand
- 0:51and nothing particularly grows really well over there.
- 0:54They had, you know, that was the part where they were bringing
- 0:57the lines across underground. They, it, it was, it was just a
- 1:01problem area. And there's a lot of contractor
- 1:04stand now, fortunately, I, I say we have a lawn, but it's not
- 1:07really lawn. It's just what grows weeds kind
- 1:11of looks lawnish. I would say if you didn't know
- 1:13it, you'd say, oh, that's a lawn.
- 1:14But it's not like what I know from New England lawns and how
- 1:18they looked and whatnot. So it's been challenging to
- 1:21plant over there, but the water garden has where we dug the hole
- 1:26down. So there's like a dip.
- 1:27So if you picture the lawn is flat and then there's a dip on
- 1:30the edge and this catches all the rain.
- 1:34So that it didn't, we realized we had a lot of runoff that
- 1:37would cross actually the whole walkway into the front, cross
- 1:40the next patch of lawn and go down into the pond.
- 1:43So we figured, OK, we'll do a water garden here and then that
- 1:47will be a great place for, you know, frogs and toads and you
- 1:51can put plants that need more boggy conditions.
- 1:55Obviously not this year with our continued extreme drought, it's
- 1:59been very difficult. Even the like all the milkweed
- 2:02is behind and whatnot. So it's kind of interesting
- 2:05because I made the decision that I wanted to make it more
- 2:10inviting for more pollinators to come.
- 2:12So I would do Zinnia all along 1 edge just to test it.
- 2:16But again, soil is incredibly crappy.
- 2:19What do you do? And we've got this weed lawn, as
- 2:22I like to call it the weed lawn. So I had to come up with
- 2:25something. So I saw a few other people
- 2:30doing research say just put cardboard down and then you can
- 2:33put soil on top of it and Zinnia will grow anywhere.
- 2:36And I was like, you know, I, I love the idea of that because
- 2:40again, mindset wise, you look at something and you say, can it
- 2:44really go into these conditions? So I was like, all right, I'm
- 2:46going to give it a shot. So I got all the cardboard I
- 2:49could from my neighbor Ashley and I, we, I took all of it and
- 2:55cut it, stripped it and like put it right along the edge about
- 3:00probably 4 feet wide and about 40 feet long around this area
- 3:06and maybe 5 feet wide in some spots, but mostly 4 to 5 feet
- 3:11wide, I would say is pretty accurate.
- 3:13And it bends around the edge of it and comes right up towards
- 3:17the front door. And then I had the boys help me
- 3:21to truckloads of topsoil from the garden center.
- 3:26I got really good topsoil so that it would they would take
- 3:29off and I put it there. I put a chicken wire fence
- 3:32around it on both sides so that the girls would not go in and
- 3:34eat it. And I planted it and I watered
- 3:37it and it was very slow to start.
- 3:39But I think that was because it was cool, but it was, it was
- 3:42very slow to start. And so I was like, OK, I'm just
- 3:45going to wait and see. OK, I'll wait and see.
- 3:47And we just, we just kept waiting, waiting it out, seeing
- 3:51what was happening. And lo and behold, it took off
- 3:54and, you know, watering it, putting the sprinkler water on
- 3:58it, make sure because it's not raining.
- 4:00And all of a sudden we had this really big downpour, like a
- 4:04really big downpour. And lo and behold, everything
- 4:08jumped at that point in time. It was crazy.
- 4:10And I was like, wow, isn't that amazing?
- 4:12That one little condition changes everything.
- 4:14But just like human beings, 1 little condition changes
- 4:17everything. So I, I kind of got like very
- 4:21aware of the watering situation. So I started watering it more
- 4:24and more frequently every day, getting out here, putting water
- 4:27on it and seeing what could happen.
- 4:30Well, now we have this full wall of flowers.
- 4:33It's stunning. It's absolutely stunning when
- 4:36you see it. It's a mix of all different size
- 4:38of Zinnia. I bought a bag of mixed Zinnia
- 4:42from Eden Brothers. Not a paid endorsement to them
- 4:45by any means, but it was amazing how they showed up.
- 4:49Like it just boom, they went crazy.
- 4:52And I have to say, coming out in the morning and seeing it has
- 4:57just made me go, Oh my gosh, I need more of this in my life.
- 5:01But it's also just astounding. It's astounding to me how
- 5:08conditions matter. And I know I've talked about
- 5:11this a lot, but give it enough water.
- 5:14Look what happens. Put it over the right soil.
- 5:16Look what happens. Look how it changes and the
- 5:19visual of it, just the environment of it.
- 5:21So now the fall is going to bring it to making this whole
- 5:25thing a doughnut around it. I'm going to clean up.
- 5:27I'm going to take out some of the grasses that I had planted
- 5:30in there that just seemed to attract nothing but fire ants.
- 5:33I'm going to fix some of the things that I had in there.
- 5:36And I'm going to create like this enveloped area of just
- 5:42flowers and a border. This will keep the chickens out
- 5:45from going in there and getting any of the baby tadpoles.
- 5:48And it just makes me think about, OK, now where else can I
- 5:52do this? Where else can I do this?
- 5:54Now I'm looking over at the circle and I'm going, oh, I
- 5:57could do it in the circle too. Now, it doesn't get quite as
- 6:00much bright light, but it's worth a test.
- 6:04So I don't know, we're going to see.
- 6:06But point is, when you see something and you know it's got
- 6:10problems, try it, give it a shot, whatever it might be.
- 6:15Think of it differently. Try something different.
- 6:18Because boy, can you be surprised.
- 6:21All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:23will see you tomorrow. Bye.
