- 0:14Tailgating and fun Back with Jim Moore. A quick question on schedule. Coach
- 0:19Duke now signed on for I think four times in the next six seven years.
- 0:23So you got talking about next year, a couple of acc trips to
- 0:27Duke and Wake Forest. You got to go to Maryland, Big Zen,
- 0:30you got to go to UAB. You get an army at home too.
- 0:34So as you look at these schedules, obviously not in a conference right this
- 0:38moment, but how important is it to have name opponents on your schedule that
- 0:43you got to face and beat. It used to be in my opinion more
- 0:49you mean to like to recruiting, Yeah, recruiting or your whole effort and
- 0:53what you're trying to do. I'll tell you what's more important right now is
- 0:58money. It's just a fact of the life that we're in, that the
- 1:03time we're in. That if you the kids that that you're recruiting now is
- 1:07they don't necessarily care as much about who you're playing, they don't necessarily care
- 1:12as much about facilities. They do care about conference and that's a real deterrent
- 1:17to us right now. Not being in a conference is absolutely killing us.
- 1:21But more than anything, it's not having nil money. And so if we're
- 1:25going to go play those teams and expect to compete with them, then we
- 1:29have to be able to track athletes that are going to be able to compete
- 1:32with them, and in order to do that, we're gonna need nil money.
- 1:34And if we don't have nil money, then it's going to be there's
- 1:38gonna be some really really tough tough days. You know the way it's working
- 1:44around the country, And I don't know that in particulars. You're obviously more
- 1:47privy to all that stuff, but it just sounds like guys are handing out
- 1:52dollars to get guys to come to the school, almost like a professional contract.
- 1:56I mean, is that really happening as much as we all conjecture it
- 2:00is, yes, And it's not even like a professional it's if it was
- 2:05a professional contract, it would probably be better because it be more regulated.
- 2:08It's I don't know if I want to say it's unfortunate, it's just a
- 2:13matter of fact that if you want to compete, if you want to if
- 2:16you want to track players that can go beat the teams that you just mentioned
- 2:20on our schedule, then you have to pay them, and you have to
- 2:23pay them an I own money, and you have to increase their cost of
- 2:27attendance, and you have to give them better housing, and you have to
- 2:29give them opportunity to earn money. And unfortunately, right now, we don't
- 2:32do much of that, and I'm fearful for this program if that doesn't happen,
- 2:39because those teams that were you know, tasked with trying to beat have
- 2:45those things and they can go attract players with money. We have great facilities,
- 2:52you know, we have a lot of people around here that care,
- 2:54but without the money to go get players. I hate I hate them saying
- 3:00that because it's just you know, it's a new concept, but it's a
- 3:02true concept as well. And I hope people realize that that if you want
- 3:07to win, you have to pay football players to come to your university,
- 3:14and that is the bottom line. And it's like that in basketball, you
- 3:17know, I mean, you know that you cover our basketball team. You
- 3:22know that recruiting is not just about opportunity to play or playing for particular coach
- 3:29or playing against a particular opponent. These kids today, they want money.
- 3:34You know, they feel they deserve the money, and quite frankly, with
- 3:37the money that's being generated, they do deserve some of it in my opinion.
- 3:39So yeah, I'm I mean, I look at those those schedules in
- 3:44the future and I realize that if we don't get some money pouring into this
- 3:46program, that some dark days are ahead. The you know example of that,
- 3:52and this goes back to the realignment thing that's going on around the country.
- 3:55SMU doesn't take any rights fee to go to the ACC and then turns
- 4:01around and raises one hundred million from like four people to support the program moving
- 4:08up to a different conference level. So I mean, we're talking about certain
- 4:13parts of the country where huge amounts of capital are pouring in. So programs
- 4:16like SMU, which is not as big time as it used to be at
- 4:20one point, but obviously there's financial support in the state of Texas. It's
- 4:26it's fact, like I said, if you want to win, you got
- 4:28to have financial support. Emotional support's great passion. Fans are great. But
- 4:33you can ask any coach in a revenue sport nowadays what they need most,
- 4:40and it's money. And I don't want to be DeBie Downer here, but
- 4:45there are realities that people that want to see this program be successful have to
- 4:49face. And I mean I wanted to be successful as much or more than
- 4:54anybody, because it's my livelihood. It's not just something, you know,
- 4:57it's not a hobby, it's not an interest. But I also know without
- 5:01a doubt that if we don't get financial support that you know, there's at
- 5:06the end of this year, there's only three independents left in the whole country,
- 5:10and that's Yukon UMass and Notre Dame, right, and Notre Dame's not
- 5:15I mean that they're different, right, But Armies going to a conference.
- 5:18So yeah, it's hey, man, it's there's some certain you know,
- 5:24I think, I guess we got this, you know, I guess we
- 5:27got to decide what we want to be, you know, and then people
- 5:31have to make it happen. We're going to talk to us up a little
- 5:35bit here, but first I want to ask you about Chase Lund. Here's
- 5:38a guy junior offensive lineman played a ton of games last year, same thing
- 5:43this year. I've noticed him and your offensive line. Going back to that
- 5:46for a minute, those guys kind of stand in the middle of your team
- 5:49a lot. I've noticed that, and I say to myself, is that
- 5:54a typical thing? Because you've done this for one hundred years? So through
- 5:58offensive linemen get in front of people lot like your guys do. I think
- 6:00it's pretty cool. It's a unique group. I found in my dealings is
- 6:06that all offensive line groups are really tight knit and kind of unique in their
- 6:12own way. They're usually very intelligent, you know, they have to function
- 6:15as a group in order if you have success, and so they're very tight
- 6:19knit these guys. However, here there's a level of maturity and discipline and
- 6:25toughness and all the good things that you're looking for. That's, in my
- 6:30experience, pretty unique and it's awesome, you know, and Chase exemplifies that.
- 6:34They all do it. They all exemplify it. But they just care,
- 6:39you know, and our team respects them. You know, they're not
- 6:44they call themselves mushrooms, you know, just over in the corner. You
- 6:48know, don't renotice them. But on our team, on our team.
- 6:54You know, they're arguably the most respected group, and not just as players
- 6:58but as men. And a lot of that, you know, has to
- 7:00do with Gordy in the way that he's molded that molded them, but most
- 7:03of it has to do with their character and the type of young men that
- 7:06they were raised to be and the commitment they've made. And it's there.
- 7:12I'm gonna tell you what it's. It's you know, you use the word
- 7:15inspiring. It is inspiring to be around them. It's fun. It makes
- 7:17you, you know, with all those things that he's talked about with the
- 7:19nil and the dark days and stuff. You do this stuff because you get
- 7:23to be around guys like Chasing Lunt and Christian and I can go down the
- 7:27line with that offensive line and I can name every single one of them,
- 7:30whether they're playing or not and say, yeah, I like being around that
- 7:32guy. That guy makes me want to come to work every day. That
- 7:34guy inspires me to do a great job. That kind of inspires me to
- 7:38look for ways to win and and look under every rock and around every corner.
- 7:42And that's what's awesome about our offensive line. It really our whole team.
- 7:46But they they as you said, they exemplify it. Yeah, I'm
- 7:49with you. I love that group, no question. All right back in
- 7:51the moment, we're going to talk about USP. The Bulls are in town
- 7:56on Saturday. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on lear Field.
