- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for.
- 0:18Impact. Hi team.
- 0:23Hope you're having a great week. I wanted to start off with a
- 0:26couple of questions for you. How many times have you felt
- 0:30like you've known that you've needed to do something, but
- 0:32you've been putting it off? How many times recently have you
- 0:38wanted to have a hard conversation, but you put it off
- 0:42for different reasons, like you were tired or you didn't feel
- 0:45like the timing was right? How many times have you
- 0:48procrastinated lately or struggled to feel motivated to
- 0:52follow through on whatever it was that you said you were going
- 0:54to do? I'm talking about something that
- 0:58we can all relate to. It's something that I talk about
- 1:01with my coaching clients every week.
- 1:04This episode is is about the way that we show up and overcoming
- 1:08the things that get in the way of us showing up consistently.
- 1:12Specifically, overcoming A belief that we have to have the
- 1:18perfect conditions to be able to perform and do a good job.
- 1:23I don't even think most of us are conscious of the fact that
- 1:26we're looking for perfect conditions.
- 1:28We're more just conscious of the resistance that we feel to do
- 1:33the damn thing that we want to do.
- 1:35We make a lot of excuses. We create stories around it.
- 1:39We talk to other people about it, but when push comes to
- 1:43shove, we're not taking the action.
- 1:47I'll share with you something that's going on in our house
- 1:50this week. My oldest daughter is
- 1:52participating in her high school play, which is awesome, and this
- 1:56week is particularly intense for her play rehearsals.
- 2:01She has four to 10:00 PM rehearsals after school every
- 2:04day to prepare for her shows this weekend.
- 2:07And this is the first time she's ever really had to perform in a
- 2:12high pressure situation. She's never played sports
- 2:16competitively, so she's never really been in a situation where
- 2:19this much is being asked of her. She's never really had to deal
- 2:24with a time crunch and and time management, and on Monday she
- 2:29was really stressing out about not having enough time and how
- 2:34tired she thought she was going to be this week.
- 2:39Now my wife and I are kind of straddling the line between
- 2:43guiding her and then also allowing her to navigate this on
- 2:47her own. We're letting her kind of find
- 2:50her own way with the time management stuff.
- 2:53When she's going to shower, when she's going to do her homework
- 2:56or study for tests, how she's going to manage your energy.
- 3:00And I'll be honest with you, we've had some bumps this week
- 3:03already. We've had to check her on her
- 3:06attitude a few times. She's really telling a strong
- 3:10story about how tired she is and how it's not fair and she can't
- 3:13get everything done. And even though she made the
- 3:16decision to spend a couple hours with her friends yesterday
- 3:19instead of doing some pretty important tasks like showering,
- 3:24I mean, this is all pretty classic teenage stuff.
- 3:28And we knew that it wasn't going to look perfect.
- 3:31We've all been in situations where we've had to learn how to
- 3:33manage ourselves and how to manage our time, our mood and
- 3:38show up and get it all done. So this is just part of the
- 3:41process and I get it. To my daughter, though, these
- 3:47are not perfect conditions and it really screws up her routine.
- 3:52She likes to move slow. She likes to have a lot of time
- 3:55in the mornings and a lot of time in the evenings.
- 3:58She lets herself get distracted pretty easily.
- 4:01And to be fair, she really hasn't ever had to do this
- 4:05before. It's the first time of having to
- 4:07manage herself in this way on a tight schedule with a lot on the
- 4:10line. So again, learning situation,
- 4:15but as an adult, these scenarios come up for us all the time,
- 4:18don't they? We have to show up even when we
- 4:22don't feel our best. We have to go to work, we have
- 4:24to give the presentation even if it's not perfect conditions.
- 4:27We have to take care of the kids even if we're tired or we have a
- 4:31cold. We have to shower, we have to
- 4:33make meals, we have to work out. We have to sit down and crack
- 4:37out the project. And so many times we can make
- 4:42excuses for ourselves around these things because we don't
- 4:45feel like we have the perfect conditions.
- 4:48But that's what this practice of being impact ready is all about.
- 4:53That's why it's the name of this podcast.
- 4:56It's why I started this podcast is to have conversations about
- 5:00how to do this all better, about how to show up and take
- 5:05responsibility for energy even without perfect conditions, How
- 5:09to prepare to be our best even when everything is kind of off
- 5:13kilter because conditions are rarely perfect, but we still
- 5:20have an impact on every space we walk into, whether we like it or
- 5:23not. So the more intentional we can
- 5:25be about it, the better impact we will be able to have.
- 5:29And that is going to have a ripple effect throughout our
- 5:32entire life, our relationships, our career, our opportunities,
- 5:36etcetera. In my other business, we coach
- 5:40nutrition clients in our coaching program, Next Level
- 5:43Nutrition. And one of the things that we
- 5:46coach on every session is how to navigate life's ups and downs
- 5:51and confront the fact that you will never have perfect
- 5:55conditions when it comes to nutrition or exercise or
- 5:58prioritizing your health. There's always going to be an
- 6:02interruption, whether it's a birthday or a wedding or a party
- 6:06or the holidays or the summer or spring break.
- 6:10I mean, half the year is an interruption.
- 6:12We don't live in a vacuum. And if we think about just a
- 6:17simple example in our own lives that we could talk about here,
- 6:21we can talk about exercise. There will most often not be the
- 6:25perfect conditions for you to work out.
- 6:27In the summer, it's too hot. In the winter, it's too dark.
- 6:31In Portland, it's too rainy or cold.
- 6:34I get it, sometimes it can feel hard when the conditions don't
- 6:39feel right. But the question is always going
- 6:43to be, are you the victim to the conditions or are you the
- 6:47captain of your own ship, the captain of your life?
- 6:51There will always be an interruption.
- 6:53There will always be a stressor and we can succumb to it,
- 6:58succumb to the stressors and the pressures and interruptions, or
- 7:02we can hold the line. We can say no.
- 7:07I want to be in choice here. I want to be the creator of my
- 7:10own life. I want to do the things that
- 7:13will take me to being the person that I want to be and live the
- 7:17life that I want to create. So this conversation about being
- 7:22ready to impact is really all about being prepared.
- 7:27It's learning how to be consistent.
- 7:30It's recognizing that you have the ability to take radical
- 7:34ownership of the things that are happening in your life.
- 7:36And I say radical ownership because it does feel radical to
- 7:38a lot of people to resist the urge to blame and push things
- 7:44out on other external circumstances, but take
- 7:47responsibility for it. All the feelings you're having,
- 7:49the thoughts going through your mind, the communication that
- 7:52you're putting out in the world, the way you behave and act.
- 7:57See, we are the ones who attach meaning to circumstances and we
- 8:01are the ones who create this perspective that we have about
- 8:07something. When it comes to my daughter,
- 8:11her perspective on Monday was this is going to be so hard and
- 8:15I'm going to be so tired and I won't have enough time to do the
- 8:18things I need to do verbatim. Those were the words that came
- 8:22out of her mouth and she was coming in pretty hot with a
- 8:26strong story that things were going to suck this week.
- 8:30Even though she could admit you have play rehearsals are really
- 8:32fun. I love doing this.
- 8:34She had this story running in the back of her mind and she's
- 8:37strong about holding on to those stories.
- 8:40Let me tell you. So again, Leanne and I are
- 8:44walking the line between coaching and letting her learn.
- 8:49But we did remind her that she's responsible for the energy she
- 8:52brings into the room. It is a choice.
- 8:54It is part of her impact on her friends, her cast and her family
- 8:59when she comes home. When I picked her up from
- 9:02rehearsal last night, she hadn't eaten any dinner, even though
- 9:05the director is supplying it for all the students.
- 9:08She said she didn't have time to eat.
- 9:10And when I asked more questions, she said, well, I didn't know it
- 9:12was my turn to eat. And then she said, well, I only
- 9:14had five minutes. So my guess is there's a bunch
- 9:18of teenagers running around not prioritizing eating dinner.
- 9:22And so now I'm dealing with a hungry kid who has a headache at
- 9:2710:00 PM and a bad attitude and low blood sugar.
- 9:30And I'm sure I wasn't the only parent who is dealing with that.
- 9:34But it's just another lesson about how to perform even when
- 9:39the conditions aren't perfect. And she's going to learn because
- 9:43she's an amazing kid and this is a great opportunity.
- 9:46But it's such a great analogy for the things that we have to
- 9:51encounter and deal with in our own lives as adults.
- 9:55And this week really has me thinking about how the struggle
- 9:58is real for people. And so I want to ask you, what
- 10:03are the conditions in your life right now that don't feel
- 10:06perfect? Where is it that you might be
- 10:09struggling to take ownership or be in choice around something?
- 10:14Where do you feel the urge to blame other things like
- 10:16circumstances or people or timing or the weather or the
- 10:19traffic? We all do it.
- 10:22It's just a natural human thing that we can fall into and it's
- 10:27fine. It's just a good question to be
- 10:30asking ourselves. Where are we feeling like we
- 10:34don't have perfect conditions and it's impacting us?
- 10:39Because remember, there is a practice and a consistency that
- 10:43we can bring that allows us to be ready to impact at any time,
- 10:49even if the conditions aren't perfect.
- 10:51Even when we're running on a few hours of sleep up against the
- 10:54deadline with a cold and kids who are stressed and hangry
- 10:57after their play rehearsals. And I hope this episode can be a
- 11:03reminder to you that you have a depth of strength within you.
- 11:09That you probably don't even know you have.
- 11:12You have a capability and a potential to perform you
- 11:16probably haven't even tapped into.
- 11:19But I promise you, it's there. And the more you practice being
- 11:23impact ready, the better you get at skating through life and
- 11:28stressors and interruptions. So be in the habit of getting
- 11:34prepared. Make consistency king in your
- 11:37life with the things that are important to you, like exercise
- 11:40and nutrition and sleep. Make sure your tank is full.
- 11:44Take ownership of the things that you have control over in
- 11:46your life. Be in choice, meaning choose the
- 11:50way that you look at things. Choose the story you tell about
- 11:53your life, choose the language you speak about it.
- 11:56Choose the people you spend time with.
- 11:59And finally, raise your frequency by choosing to feel
- 12:04high frequency emotions now every single day.
- 12:08Access them every day. Feelings like gratitude and
- 12:12appreciation and joy and excitement.
- 12:14You can be excited about your life right now.
- 12:17Don't wait until you achieve some certain thing or you hit
- 12:21some milestone. Access it now.
- 12:24And when you raise your frequency that way, you become a
- 12:28more resilient version of yourself.
- 12:31Those are the things that will help you be ready to impact.
- 12:34Those are the things that will help you show up well even
- 12:38without perfect conditions. So I hope that this feels
- 12:42helpful to you this week. Here's to finishing strong the
- 12:46next couple of days. Here's to my wife and I getting
- 12:49through this week, play rehearsals and the actual shows
- 12:52themselves this weekend. I appreciate you being here.
- 12:56Thanks for listening. And as always, team, thanks for
- 13:00being ready to impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 13:04Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 13:06you to own your impact and recognize.
- 13:08That you are powerful. By elevating our energy and
- 13:11awareness, we can create exponential change in this life.
- 13:15If you enjoyed today's insights, share them with a friend and
- 13:17subscribe. To the show for more, I truly
- 13:19appreciate you. Thanks again for being here.
