- 0:07Super Bowl XVI was played on Sunday, January 24, 1982, when the San Francisco 49ers faced the Cincinnati Bengals at the Pontiac Silver Dome in Michigan.
- 0:16San Francisco had failed to make the playoffs in the previous nine seasons, but three years after the hiring of coach Bill Walsh and the drafting of quarterback Joe Montana,
- 0:25the Niners marched through the 1981 season with a 13-3 record. Cincinnati was coached by Forrest Gregg, who was brought over from Cleveland in order to turn around the Bengals in 1980.
- 0:35Two years later, they were able to put together a 12-1 season and advance to the Super Bowl with a convincing win over the Chargers in the AFC Championship game.
- 0:43This audio recording is from the Cincinnati Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Samp and Andy McWilliams.
- 1:13They were firing from all over the place and a lot of amateur photogs here trying to take home a memory of the Super Bowl.
- 1:21I certainly will tell them very, very shortly if they continue during action that flash cameras are not allowed.
- 1:27I would not think that they would allow them to go on while the game is going on. Plenty were flashing when Diana Ross was singing the national anthem.
- 1:34But they should not be allowed while the game is actually in play.
- 1:38The Bengals received a big cheer from the audience when they came in to participate with the University of Michigan band before the game.
- 1:45The Bengals down in the corner to our right, also down in the corner to our left.
- 1:49So Breach tees it up now at the 30-yard line. At this time, he will boot it high down the middle, coming up the take at his Lawrence at the 10.
- 1:57Up to the 15, to the 20, gets to the 25, 20, loses the ball to the Wangle Favot at the 25-yard line.
- 2:04It is John Simmons, I believe, the rookie out of SMU. I think John Simmons got on top of it.
- 2:10Guy Fraser was there too, but an excellent hit around the 27 and rings popped up the football.
- 2:16Now a turnover by the 49ers who led the league in turnovers, plus 23 for the year.
- 2:22And a ball was either stripped out by Fraser or somebody else.
- 2:26And the Bengals are right in business at the 49er 26-yard line.
- 2:30And the Bengals offense commuted out on the field much more quickly than they thought they would be.
- 2:34Rookie Guy Fraser out of Wyoming made the hits, and another rookie, John Simmons, picked up the football.
- 2:40Collinsworth goes left. Curtis comes to the right. Alexander and Johnson in the backfield.
- 2:44Now Alexander goes wide left.
- 2:46We'll set the rest of the offense and the 49er defense for you.
- 2:49Back to throw is Anderson. Fires out, is caught by Curtis. That's a 20. Hits from behind and drops at the 18-yard line.
- 2:56Eric Wright hits Collinsworth from behind. A real cheap blow as the ball was caught by Curtis.
- 3:03Jack Reynolds back there to make the stop, and the ball is just inside the 19-yard line.
- 3:08So the Bengals go right to the air, and they get a second down and three.
- 3:12Across the front, Munoz and Mike Wilson are the tackles.
- 3:15Dave Lapham is the left guard. Max Montoya, the right guard.
- 3:19Blair Busch is the center, and they have a four-man defensive line in there.
- 3:23Fred Dean overplaying the right-end spot.
- 3:26Second and two, a handoff into the line is Pete Johnson.
- 3:29Pete fights his way to maybe the 16-yard line.
- 3:32Montoya is forced back by three or four tacklers, led by one of the inside linebackers, Craig Puky.
- 3:38Bengals came up with a big special team play early in the San Diego game,
- 3:42as Rick Rosano forced a fumble, and Don Bass recovered deep in San Diego territory.
- 3:48The Bengals converted that into an early touchdown,
- 3:51and now on the first play of the game, the Bengals special teams again
- 3:54forced a fumble with the guy Fraser on the hit, and the recovery made by defensive back John Simmons.
- 4:00The Bengals have a first down just by the nose of the football, just inside the San Francisco 17-yard line.
- 4:08On defense is Wayne Borden and Jim Stuckey now with Archie Reese, the middle guard, up front.
- 4:13Dena Turner and Woody Harper are the outside linebackers. Jack Reynolds and Craig Puky on the inside.
- 4:18Ronnie Lott and Eric Wright are the cornerbacks.
- 4:21Charlton Williamson, the strong safety. Dwight Hicks is the free safety.
- 4:25M.L. Harris is checked in to give the Bengals two tight ends now.
- 4:28Charlie Alexander has come out.
- 4:30Collins-Worth goes left. Eric Wright backs off.
- 4:33Ronnie Lott now backs off. Curtis on the right side.
- 4:35The 49ers shift up front, and Anderson will go back to throw.
- 4:39Looky now, forced out of the pocket. Up front is Claude at the 10-yard line by Ross.
- 4:43He's down the sidelines with a five and shoved out of bounds right there.
- 4:47Jack Reynolds got over the knock down Ross out of bounds at about the five-yard line.
- 4:52It was a little dink over the line after Anderson held the ball a long time.
- 4:56And Ross finally cut into the clear at about the 12-yard line, took the ball, went around one man,
- 5:02and was bumped out at the five at his first and goal.
- 5:05Anderson did a good job of avoiding a rush from his right.
- 5:08Blair Bush came across to pick up the right end, and on the delay, it was dumped off to Ross,
- 5:13and he's inside the 10-yard line at the five first and goal for Cincinnati.
- 5:17Now Collins-Worth comes out of the ball game, and the Bengals will go back to the two-side end.
- 5:22Dan O'Hara's on the left, Dan Ross on the right, and Alexander and Pete Johnson in the backfield.
- 5:27Alexander is the deep man in the eye. The Bengals are at the five with the first and goal.
- 5:32Firsts are in motion. A handoff Alexander left side.
- 5:35He gets about a yard, and that is all, and now he has really shoved back by a first charge.
- 5:40Cody Harper, the linebacker on that side, got him. Then Dwight Hicks, the safety, came up to help out,
- 5:45along with Ronnie Lott. We'll see the penetration. There was not much of a gain on the play.
- 5:50In fact, the ball is still at the five-yard line. It will be second down and goal.
- 5:5449ers played the rush very tough this year. They gave up only 10 rushing touchdowns all season long.
- 6:00And they gave up an average of only three and a half yards every time a team tried to rush against them.
- 6:05Defense really has been the strong point of this club.
- 6:08Cotton's worth is to the left. Now Curtis split out wide to the right.
- 6:11The only running back is Pete Johnson. Second down and goal at the five.
- 6:15The blitz is on. Anderson back to throw, and he is nailed by Jim Stuckey back at about the 12-yard line.
- 6:22Stuckey got around Mike Wilson and blew in and nailed Anderson back in a bunch at about the 12-yard line.
- 6:30So good coverage in the secondary, and Anderson had to eat the ball.
- 6:34Now the 49ers bring in about five substitutes, including Fred Dean, as they will go to the four-man line.
- 6:40Steve Prider checks in for the Bengals, and they also go to their nickels.
- 6:44Jim Stuckey is the guy who recovered that late fumble and preserved the NFC championship game victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
- 6:52The Bengals don't want to come out of this with anything less than a touchdown.
- 6:56Curtis and Collinsworth flank to the left, and now Prider goes that way also.
- 7:04A four-man rush as Anderson is back to throw, and intercepted at the five-yard line, out to the 10, down to the 20, the 25, and pushed out of bounds at about the 30-yard line.
- 7:14White Hicks steps in front of that pass, down at about the five-yard line, and that has to be a big, big boost for the San Francisco 49ers.
- 7:23As after turning the ball over, they come up with a big interception.
- 7:27There's time out on the field with a score the Bengals nothing, and the 49ers nothing.
- 7:32Bengals had cleared and goal at the San Francisco 5. They sent triple wide receivers left.
- 7:38Isaac Curtis cut over the middle. He was the man the pass was intended for, but for some reason Isaac pulled up in his pattern,
- 7:45got around the goal line, and Dwight Hicks was right there to pick it off.
- 7:48So that is how the first Bengals series in the first game ended, with a quick interception.
- 7:53Up front, Wilson Whitley, the nose guard, Ross Browner, Eddie Edwards, the end.
- 7:57Harris Cameron, LeClaire Williams, we'll set the rest in a moment. They have Clark and Solomon on the opposite side.
- 8:03Montana is back to throw. It's a three-man rush. That's up a screen.
- 8:06It's a Ricky Patton up at the 35, and he'll be pulled down at about the 39-yard line.
- 8:11A little screen left to Ricky Patton, a former teammate of Reggie Williams up at Flint Southwest High School,
- 8:18and it goes for about six or seven yards, just depending on where they spot the ball.
- 8:23Eddie Edwards coming over to make the stop. They'll put it right at the 38.
- 8:27They'll give him six, and it will be second down and four.
- 8:30Louis Breeden and Kenny Riley are the corners. Bobby Kemp is the strong safety.
- 8:34Brian Hicks, the free safety. They have Dwight Clark and Solomon as the wide receivers.
- 8:38Charlie Young is the tight end. Earl Cooper and Ricky Patton are the running back.
- 8:42Joe Montana is the quarterback.
- 8:44Now they send Charlie Young to tight end and motion to the right.
- 8:47Montana is back to throw.
- 8:49Fires it upfield. It's caught out at the 44-yard line.
- 8:52Dropped immediately right at the 45, Dwight Clark.
- 8:55He generally is a guy who will work underneath the linebackers, and he did that time,
- 8:59and again is good for a first down up to the 44.
- 9:03Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 9:06This is the Cincinnati Bengals football network.
- 9:09Gary Burbank morning. Debbie Conner midday. Jim LaBarbara afternoon.
- 9:14Bob Truffey, Sports Talk. Lynn Riley evenings and Talknet.
- 9:18The new number one lineup in 82 from WLW, Cincinnati.
- 9:25It's a pitch back. It's Cooper on the left side.
- 9:27He's forced back, and he'll just get back to the line of scrimmage.
- 9:30Reggie Williams moved through, rerouted him, and he got back to the 38- or 9-yard line,
- 9:35and Ross Brown at the right end, and Jim LeClair were over there to put him down.
- 9:39Reggie Williams, quick thrust and penetration, really messed up that play.
- 9:43Good cutback by Cooper to avoid a loss is that the slow developing sweep was really snipped out well
- 9:50by Reggie Williams and the rest of the Bengals.
- 9:52They had plenty of pursuit to their right, to the left side of the San Francisco formation.
- 9:57They send Freddie Solomon out to the right. To the left side comes Dwight Clark.
- 10:00You'll get double coverage over there, Riley and Reggie Williams.
- 10:05Amos Lawrence on the backfield. Back to throw is Montana.
- 10:08Fires upfield. Good down to the Bengals' 46-yard line, and immediately swarmed down, down there is Freddie Solomon, the tight end.
- 10:15Bobby Kemp got over there, LeClair, Louis Braden, but the bullet by Montana was right into the arms
- 10:21and is good to the Bengals' 46-yard line, and that is very close to where they have to go for a first down.
- 10:27In fact, Pat Haggard, now it is going to be, as we can see from here, maybe a foot short.
- 10:32It will be third down and just about that foot to go.
- 10:35So Freddie Solomon has started despite the questionable knee, and he was the receiver on that pattern.
- 10:45Montana hands off, around the outside, a handoff now back to Montana.
- 10:48Look, throws downfield.
- 10:50As it's locked down at the 32-yard line, a great catch down there by Charlie Young, who went high in the air, was cut from underneath.
- 10:58That ball went off to two men before it wound up back in the hands of Joe Montana, and he threw down to the Bengals' 33-yard line,
- 11:05where it was caught by Charlie Young.
- 11:07And the 49ers have another first down, third and short yardage, and they went for the pass.
- 11:12They faked the sweep left. They gave it on the end around to Solomon, who runs that play quite frequently,
- 11:18and you have to be aware Freddie Solomon is a runner, but they pitched back to Montana and completed the pass to the tight end.
- 11:24Easton Ramson now goes in to replace Young, the 49ers at the Bengals' 33.
- 11:29They send Ramson in motion over the right. Montana is back to throw.
- 11:33Reggie Williams is coming, throws it upfield, a dive, and it was not intercepted.
- 11:38It was dropped down at the 18-yard line by Lou Breeden, who had a great chance to intercept it,
- 11:43as Ramson was overthrown out in the right flat.
- 11:46But Breeden could not hold on to the ball, so it'll come back to the 33-yard line
- 11:51and will be second down and 10 for the 49ers.
- 11:54That was San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana's first in completion.
- 11:57He was 4 for 4. Now make him 4 for 5, 35 yards.
- 12:01Montana has had time. The Bengals have not had a great deal of pressure on them. They have not blitzed.
- 12:07The Bengals don't consider to blitz unless more than four men come.
- 12:11Now the Bengals put seven men right up on the line of scrimmage. They'll drop a couple off.
- 12:16Montana has one running back in a slot left. The handoff is Coper to the left side.
- 12:20He's at the 30 to the 25 and all the way down to the 22-yard line.
- 12:24He ran to his right. Big blocking from Randy Cross and Keith Von Horst and Bobby Kemp.
- 12:30And Reggie Williams finally had to put him down, but it was the first down,
- 12:33a gain of 11 yards to that right side.
- 12:36The 49ers have not been an efficient running crew this year,
- 12:40but they were in the first game against the Bengals, and that one was good for 11 and a quick first down.
- 12:45Earl Cooper had good success with that play in the first game between these same two teams.
- 12:4962 yards, a 5.2 average, and one of the theories as to why he did so well is because
- 12:54Eddie Edwards was injured in that game, but Eddie is healthy today.
- 12:59Bill Ring and Johnny Davis are now the running backs as Bill Walts puts in a couple of new ones.
- 13:03Montana hands it off to Ring. He rips into the right side.
- 13:06He's all the way to the 15-yard line before Louis Breeden can feral him.
- 13:10Ryan Hicks coming over from the safety spot to help out.
- 13:13They ran to their right that time, and they whip between Eddie Edwards and Wilson Whitley in the middle.
- 13:18Bo Harris was taken out of the play, and it's a good, quick 7-yarder.
- 13:23And the 49ers are just outside the Bengals, 15-yard line with a second down and three.
- 13:28The 49ers fumble the opening kickoff, and the Bengals recovered it, got it down to the 5-yard line,
- 13:33and back from the 11, Anderson was intercepted.
- 13:36And that's red end. The 49ers took the ball after the run back to the 32,
- 13:40and they have it down at the Bengals, 15, where it is second down and about three to go.
- 13:47And up a pitch to the left side. Running wide is Cooper.
- 13:50He's going to be shoved out of bounds at about the 15-yard line.
- 13:53He didn't gain much in the play. Reggie Williams, along with Brian Hicks, Kenny Reilly, were all over there
- 13:59to make sure that he got out of bounds, and he did at the 15,
- 14:02so there is no gain in the play. Now it will become third down and about three.
- 14:0649ers have had the football for 10 plays and over five minutes in this drive.
- 14:11They started at the Bengals 32, at their own 32, after the interception by Dwight Hicks.
- 14:176.41 is the playing time left in this first quarter.
- 14:20There is no score, but the 49ers are down, knocking at the goal, just as the Bengals were.
- 14:25The game that time was about two lengths of the football.
- 14:28Now they'll send Solomon and Young out to the right, Dwight Clark to the left.
- 14:32In motion, Solomon, Montano is back to throw.
- 14:36Fires out of the flat, all alone at the five-yard line, knocked out of bounds at the one is Freddie Solomon.
- 14:43Right down to the one-yard line before Lou Breeden could knock Solomon out of the ballgame,
- 14:47and Solomon, who injured that knee on Wednesday, is slow getting up on the far sideline.
- 14:54He was on that side, and he just drifted out in the right flat, and there was nobody there at all,
- 15:00as he really came out clean. The ball is one yard away from the Bengals' goal line.
- 15:04The Bengals go to the goal line defense, and the 49ers will have a first and goal,
- 15:08fitting to score the first time they get their hands on the ball.
- 15:14The Bengals make defensive changes, the 49ers with some offensive changes.
- 15:19They have Davis, a short man, and a plunge into the line, and a touchdown.
- 15:24Joe Montana gets that ball and scored as he did in the first game, and the 49ers are on the board.
- 15:30It is a 6-0 football game, and they made it look rather easily as they went 68 yards to score.
- 15:36One big run by Earl Cooper, the rest of them on passes, and Montana sneaked it over,
- 15:41and with 5.52 left here in the first quarter, it is 6-0 San Francisco.
- 15:48Now Montana will hold, Ray Wershing will attempt the extra point.
- 15:57The lines are down, the snap is put down, Wershing's kick is up, and it is good.
- 16:02So there's time out on the field with a score of 49ers-7, and the Bengals nothing.
- 16:1149ers brought first blood in Super Bowl XVI, a 68-yard drive, 11 plays.
- 16:16They held the football for 5 minutes 58 seconds.
- 16:19Quarterback Joe Montana on a one-yard sneak for the touchdown.
- 16:24Montana passed brilliantly, got great protection through the ball,
- 16:28well 5 out of 6 for 49 yards in that drive.
- 16:31Ray Wershing set the kickoff.
- 16:33Both Wershing and Breach went to the University of California.
- 16:36There's Wershing's kick, he lines it down, it bounces at the 15, David Mercer picks it up at the 5.
- 16:42It comes to the 10, comes to the 15, spun around, will be dropped at about the 18-yard line.
- 16:47Good tackle downfield by Rick Jervis, and a couple of others down there, Bobby Leopold along with Milt McCall.
- 16:54And the Bengals only got it back to the 19.
- 16:56It was a squid kick on purpose by Wershing, and they got pretty good coverage by the time Mercer picked the ball up.
- 17:02And the bounce at the 5-yard line, a 14-yard return.
- 17:06And the Bengals trailing 7-0 start out at their own 19.
- 17:09They go with a 5 defensive backs, 4 defensive linemen, including Fred Dean.
- 17:13So they've got that 4-2-5 in there.
- 17:15Willie Harper and Jack Reynolds are the linebackers.
- 17:18Collins-Worth left.
- 17:19Alexander comes outside of Curtis on the right side.
- 17:24Anderson is back to throw, sets up a screen to Pete on the left side.
- 17:28Pete comes out to the 20, gets to the 22-yard line, will be knocked down there.
- 17:32A good tackle by Bobby Leopold, but it looks as though Johnson might have a little running room.
- 17:37They let the right side of the San Francisco line, including in Fred Dean, come in.
- 17:42And Anderson lobbed the ball over to Pete Johnson, but Leopold with a good tackle, cuts the game off at 3.
- 17:48It will be second down and 7, and the 49ers make a lot of defensive substitution.
- 17:52San Francisco really putting the pressure on Ken Anderson.
- 17:55He's been sacked once and pressured just about every other time he's tried to throw the football.
- 18:00He hasn't been able to fire down the field effectively yet.
- 18:02Collins-Worth left. Curtis to the right.
- 18:05He's got a running back there now. They take a split behind Anderson. It is second and 7.
- 18:09Kenny back to throw under that four-man rush. Looks out on the flat.
- 18:12It's caught at the 15-yard line by Pete. 20, 25, 27-yard line.
- 18:17Before we give you a haul down by Archie Reese, the middle guard who got out there,
- 18:21along with Ronnie Lott, the cornerback on that side.
- 18:24Again out to maybe the 27. Let's see where Pat Haggarty puts it down.
- 18:28Right at the 27-yard line. It is again a 5.
- 18:31And the Bengals now will be looking at a third and two as we have about four and a half minutes left to play in this first quarter.
- 18:38The 49ers lead at 7-0. They bring three new men in now, including Fred Dean.
- 18:42Figuring it is a passing situation, third and two.
- 18:45The Bengals have two tight ends in as Collins-Worth comes out.
- 18:48The 49ers put five men up tight on that line of scrimmage.
- 18:52Two other linebackers right up close.
- 18:56Anderson fakes. Rolls out to the right.
- 18:58That's the 25. It's up to the 30 and will go out of bounds and has the first down.
- 19:02Ronnie Lott is the guy that got over there and chased him out of bounds.
- 19:05There's that fake and that naked bootleg out to the right.
- 19:09And Anderson knew right where he had to go.
- 19:11He picked up the first down with a yard to spare at the 30-yard line. He needed two. He got three.
- 19:16Anderson was the Bengals' second leading rusher this year behind Pete Johnson with only even 300 yards.
- 19:22And that's far more than any other quarterback in the National Football League this year.
- 19:26Bill Walsh talked a lot this week about his fear of Ken Anderson's running ability.
- 19:31He made some inferences that the San Francisco 49ers might try to hit him low.
- 19:35I don't know who he was trying to intimidate.
- 19:38Curtis Wright, Collins-Worth left.
- 19:40Lott comes back off the line of scrimmage.
- 19:42Hand off into the line. Pete Johnson burrows his way into the left side.
- 19:45Finds the going right side. Finds the going tough.
- 19:48Makes maybe three up to about the 30 free before Pocky and Stucker and Archie Reese, the middle guard, can pile it up.
- 19:55So Pete Johnson, who averaged almost eight yards to carry in the first ballgame against the 49ers, gets a short free at the 33.
- 20:05It will be second down and seven. Now Fred Dean is the fourth defensive lineman.
- 20:10They'll continue showing his different faces on defense because they'll bring new men in on just about every play.
- 20:16Now we have a slot left with Curtis and Collins-Worth over that way. Alexander and Pete Johnson are in the backfield.
- 20:22Now Alexander comes in motion out to the right and Anderson will go back to play against that four-man rush.
- 20:28Now he rolls off to his left at the 35-yard line, slides down at about the 39, just about where he had to go for the first down.
- 20:35Over there was Eric Wright, who made sure that he was down right there.
- 20:40Munoz pushed Fred Dean to the outside and Anderson ran to the inside of him to his left and got over there close enough that they...
- 20:48Well, they're not going to bring in the change. It's going to be about two feet short of a first down, maybe a yard at the 39.
- 20:5549ers are doing a physical job on Isaac Curtis at the moment, bumping him at the line of scrimmage, and Isaac is having trouble getting into his patterns at this point.
- 21:03So it is third down, short yardage, about a yard to go at the Bengals' 39. The 49ers jam up tightly, so do the Bengals.
- 21:10They bring Bursar in motion, handoff, into the line at the feet, and he has the first down as he gets over the 40,
- 21:15to maybe the 41-yard line, stopped by Lott, middle guard Archie Reese.
- 21:20How well you control the middle guard is the big factor in how your running game will go, and Blair Bush, who would help from either one of the guards,
- 21:27is the guy who is responsible for taking care of that middle man.
- 21:31Now John Hardy comes in as the defensive lineman as the 49ers just continue to change him.
- 21:36The Bengals have a first down at their own 41. The 49ers lead at 7-0, and we have two minutes and five seconds left here in the first quarter.
- 21:44Collins-Worth left, Curtis will be to the right.
- 21:48Cornerbacks go back about 10 yards this time. Anderson goes back to throw.
- 21:53Look going long down the field, and send it for Collins-Worth. He can't get it, a good defensive play.
- 21:59Eric Wright knocked it down, way down at about the 12-yard line.
- 22:03Right, right with Collins-Worth, got a hand up on the air, deflected the ball, and the first long bomb of the afternoon goes to Ry.
- 22:11Anderson went on the straight fly pattern to Collins-Worth, who had single coverage from the rookie Eric Wright out of Missouri.
- 22:17The ball was there, maybe hung a little bit, and a right with a diving tip knocked it away from the Bengal rookie out of Florida.
- 22:24Great play by Eric Wright, he was actually beaten by a step on that play.
- 22:28So Jim Stuckey comes in now, Dwayne Bord goes out. Alexander has come out, the Bengals go over the two tight ends.
- 22:35Ross and M.L. Harris, one running back, and Curtis and Collins-Worth, again the cornerbacks about 10 yards deep as they bury that defensive front.
- 22:43Anderson is back to throw, the blitz is on, fires over the sidelines, Collins-Worth catches it, but he did not have both feet in bounds.
- 22:51At the 46-yard line on that rather deep out, Collins-Worth caught it in front of the 49ers bench, but could not get both feet in.
- 22:59Now the Bengals, stalled out at their own 41-yard line, have a third down and ten. It stops the clock with a minute and 46 seconds left in this first quarter.
- 23:08Difficult down and distance situation for Ken Anderson against the defense that rushes the quarterback and covers the receivers so well, as the 49ers do.
- 23:16A third and ten is a nightmare play-calling situation, and Lindy Infante up in the press box is scratching his head, no doubt, making this call.
- 23:25They put Fred Dean right behind the center, now they move him over toward the left side as he continues to move around, not wanting to show where he is going to come from.
- 23:33A quick blitz is on, Anderson back to throw, has time, now he's going to be hit and dropped back at his 36.
- 23:39No one open, well covered downfield. All the way down the middle, Isaac Curtis was covered, and he was nailed back there by linebacker Keena Turner, as the Bengals had the blitz going against them from San Francisco.
- 23:51Anderson sacked for the second time back at the 37. He loses four, and for the first time this afternoon, Pat McAnally will have to go into punt.
- 23:59Actually, Cincinnati picked up the blitz pretty well, and Ken had quite a bit of time to throw the football, but his receivers were covered and probably made the right move in holding on to the football and taking the sack.
- 24:09Three were downfield, and they were well covered. Solomon back, along with Dwight Hicks.
- 24:15The line of scrimmage, the 37, a snap back to McAnally. Pat wobbles one off the side of his foot, it will bounce at about the 30-yard line, goes down to the 25 to the 20, a great bounce down inside the 10, and it'll be down right about at the 10-yard line.
- 24:30So there's one of those lucky McAnally punts that he just hacked off the right side of his foot, got a great bounce of about another 20 yards. The 49ers will be starting out at their own 10. There's time out on the field with a score. The 49ers 7, the Bengals nothing.
- 24:4649ers 7, Bengals nothing with a minute one remaining in the first quarter of Super Bowl XVI from the Pontiac Silverdome. The Bengals held the football field for just under five minutes, but really couldn't get anything going, although they had a great chance to score on that deep one to Chris Collinsworth.
- 25:04Only the 49ers suck in possession at their own 10-yard line. They have the two wide receivers left and right. Now they go in an eye with Patton behind Cooper, and Joe Montana will go back to throw. Fires out in the flat, it's knocked down by Ken Riley in front of Dwight Clark, and Riley almost got an interception.
- 25:21I think they anticipated the Bengals might blitz, and they did. At least Reggie Williams came in from the right side. Montana really got rid of the ball in a hurry. Clark only had time to make a shallow cut, and Kenny Riley dove right in front of him to knock the ball down.
- 25:35Veteran Ken Riley did a great job on single coverage against the NFL's leading receiver Dwight Clark. Reggie Williams came from his right outside linebacking spot and knocked Joe Montana to the deck just as he released the football. They'll go with two tight ends now. He's ramped up to the second.
- 25:51Second and 10, the 49ers at their own 10. Patton and handoff is Ricky Patton. Wide around the right side, he's dragged back at the three-yard line by Ralph Browner. Browner really got away from Dan Audick, and on that sweep to the left, Browner burst through and nailed Ricky Patton all the way back at about the three- or four-yard line.
- 26:11They will put it down at the three- or seven-yard loss. You know, I can always remember, Andy, old high school coach of mine used to say the most dangerous run in football is an end sweep, and especially when you're backed up against your own goal line.
- 26:24And now the 49ers will have a third and 17. The Bengals will go to the nickel, and Tom Zinkel goes in as one of the other linebackers.
- 26:39They have Ray Griffin in there. Hicks on the inside. Montana hands off at the five-yard line. Cooper gets up to the 10, the 12-yard line, a flag down on the play, and he will be dropped right there. So he gained about nine in the play.
- 26:53Louis Braden and Bobby Kemp up in the secondary hauled him down. A Bengals player is down on the ground injured.
- 27:03It is one of the linebackers. All we can see is the number five from here. Bengals had too many men on the field. They're going to be penalized for having 12 men on the football field. We do have a Bengals linebacker down.
- 27:16There is time out on the field with the score, the 49ers seven and the Bengals nothing.
- 27:22They did a lot of shifting and they had too many men in there. The 49ers accepted the penalty, which moves the ball out to the eight-yard line. Now it will be third down and 12. But Tom Zinkel now, who was on his stomach, has rolled over on his back.
- 27:34The Bengals doctors are out there taking a look at him, and we have a delay in play. Just five seconds left to play here in this first quarter. The 49ers lead at seven to nothing.
- 27:44The Bengals continue to make substitutions. Ross Browner came off the field. Now he is going back. Mike St. Clair is in there. Eddie Edwards is in there. Burley is in there.
- 27:53Browner is in there, but Tom Zinkel is still down on the ground at the eight-yard line. And we can't see what they might be looking at. Zinkel now getting up to a sitting position, and it's possible that he just really had his bell rung.
- 28:09Oh, he bent his neck as he ran into the tackler from the side.
- 28:16Well, there are a lot of Super Bowl parties going on back in Cincinnati, and there's one I've gone to down through the years. I'll say hello to Bill Fitzgerald and his crew over there watching the ball game today.
- 28:26Zinkel is up on his feet now. Standing out on the field, coming off under his own power, although Wally Tempramont is holding one arm.
- 28:35And Zinkel, obviously, is a little shaky as he comes off the field. Bill, they're going to be listening to our broadcast of Super Bowl XVI over in the Solomon Islands. Bob King is in the Peace Corps there.
- 28:46He's from Cincinnati, and his brother Peter writes for the Cincinnati Inquirer, and he is taping the game. He's going to send it over to his brother Bob, who's in the Peace Corps in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.
- 28:56Well, that's great. As many people as can hear the ball game around the world the better. It'll be third down and 12 for the 49ers now with their own eight. Buddy Solomon goes out to the right.
- 29:07Zinkels have just four defensive backs in the ball game, four linemen, a handoff, Ricky Patton around the outside will get up to the 10 to the 12 yard line, and he'll be pulled down there. At this time, they will have to punt.
- 29:18So he gains about four on his sweep off to the right. Mike St. Clair, one of those over to get him. And a couple of others to help out, including Ray Griffin, as the first quarter comes to an end.
- 29:29That is the end of the first quarter with a score of the 49ers seven and the Bengals nothing.
- 29:35After 15 minutes of football and Super Bowl 16, the 49ers lead the Bengals seven nothing. The 49ers touch down a one yard Joe Montana run, tapping off the 68 yard 11 play five minute and 58 second drive.
- 29:50First quarter statistics, the 49ers 65 yards total offense 49 past 16 run the Bengals only 33 yards in total offense 16 rushing and 27 passing Ken Anderson four out of seven that one big interception to pick off by Dwight Hicks, which started them off on their touchdown drive.
- 30:10The ball is at the 12 yard line and Jim Miller, the barefooted second year man from Mississippi will be in the boot when we get things going. And that interception after the Bengals have recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and it's taken down to the five were pushed back to the 11.
- 30:26And then that interception really had to hype up the 49ers. They took the ball moved it right down the field and Miller standing now about three or four yards deep in the end zone.
- 30:35Mike Fuller is the sole safety for the Bengals standing back near midfield Miller averaged about 41 and a half yards a punt this year.
- 30:47Randy Cross is the deep snapper gets the ball and it is almost blocked but he gets a good high kick away and Mike Fuller will take it back at the 45.
- 30:55Miller comes up the midfield we'll get right there and that is all so the Bengals have good field position as Miller hung up a high punt down under the cover first man down Amos Lawrence and the Bengals will take over just shy of the 50 yard line in their own territory.
- 31:10The wide man on the right came in and just failed to block that punt by Miller Miller juggled a low snap and barely got the kick away as Triter came across and just barely missed getting a piece of the football. We've seen a lot of different 49er front here in this first quarter as they continue to shake things up.
- 31:28We can use that Bengals offense Curtis goes to the right. Collins worth to the left both of them are a yard back now Collins worth goes in motion to the right side and the 49ers don't ship it's Pete Johnson on a cutback beat both his way about five yards in through that right side down to the 49ers 46 yard line.
- 31:48The Bengals with the six along with Archie Reese were the two men who made the tackle on Pete the flow went to the right not the cutback beat Johnson cut in behind him got the ball down to the 46 given five the Japanese radio broadcasters are next door to us Andy and they had their all their information up on the wall as to the times before the game and down to four fifteen to set kickoff must not be any Japanese word for kickoff.
- 32:13What formation to the left the Bengals were the second and five on a whistle blows as the Bengals I believe want to call a timeout one of the two teams has called one here.
- 32:25Cincinnati it is the Bengals calling a timeout and there's timeout on the field with the score the 49ers seven the Bengals nothing.
- 32:34The Bengals a bit shaky maybe a bit tentative here at the start of Super Bowl 16 that they had 12 men on the field and that last San Francisco drive and gave the 49ers an extra down after the penalty and then the Chris Collins worth it just wasted a time out the Bengals were in a wrong formation and I don't remember the Bengals wasting a time out like that all season long.
- 32:55Well both Curtis and Collins worth were lined up as a flanker.
- 33:02This time they're both back now Collins worth goes in motion same formation to this point Anderson goes back to throw it's a four man rush fires the downfield a dive and it was caught by Collins worth down on the 28 yard line trying to cover them back there was back.
- 33:15So I ran a little as he came up with line backing spot and he only just dove in front of Ronnie lot to pull the ball down and Anderson really drilled that one in the keyhole between Reynolds a lot.
- 33:26And it was a dive and a catch by Collins worth at the 28.
- 33:30Collins worth came in motion right he was picked up by Carlton Williamson who was playing him soft and Chris with a quick cut into his lap made a diving grab for his first catch of the day.
- 33:40That is the Bengals first down at the 49ers 28 49ers lead at seven nothing here early in the second quarter of Collins worth and Curtis are slotted to the left two running backs Alexander goes in motion to the right and a bangle lineman went across the field.
- 33:55It was Dave Lapham before the ball had ever been snapped and he cut down Duane board and that is going to cost the Bengals five yards Bengals had nine penalties in that first game that really hurt now they get down to the 28 yard line Dave Lapham this is the count and it'll be a five yard walk off it will be first down in 15 now back at the 33 Bengals have had their opportunities early.
- 34:18Both Louis Braden and Ken Riley have come close to interceptions and Chris Collins worth almost had a long bomb touchdown pass but Eric Wright knocked it right out of his fingers.
- 34:28So the Bengals have come short in some very close situations.
- 34:32One of the interesting matchups of course is Anthony Munoz against Fred Dean when Dean is in the ballgame when he comes in Duane board the regular right end moves over to right tackle and generally will be the responsibility of lapham.
- 34:44So first and 15 at the 33 Alexander out wide to the left the receivers split on opposite sides Anderson with a long count for man rush rolls back.
- 34:54Fires a downfield Ross did not quite hold out of the ball down at the 10 yard line. He made a one handed effort but apparently did not control the ball. He had drifted down deep but was off into the right flat and was open. He reached up with one hand came down maintaining that he had caught the ball.
- 35:13But the official said no he did not.
- 35:16Ross had his man beat grabbed it with one hand but the ball bounced off the turf as he gathered it in. Ross was a big factor in the first game between these two teams.
- 35:26Six or seven passes that is one of that is the second longest path that the Bengals have thrown all afternoon the go pattern to Collins worth had been the longest one this one down to the eight yard line and it was just about a foot too long.
- 35:39That'll be second and 15 at the 49 or 33 Collins worth and Curtis on opposite sides Anderson is back to throw looks fire the town same place a flag and interference is going to be called.
- 35:53I think Curtis was bumped out of the 15 yard line by Lynn Thomas who had become the fifth defensive back and that bump along the 15 yard line was very very obvious and that will give the Bengals an automatic first down.
- 36:07Lynn Thomas the rookie out of Pittsburgh had single coverage and it looked like he had a pretty good beat on Isaac Curtis but he bumped him with the shoulder and threw Curtis off stride before the ball got there and obvious interference called against the San Francisco defensive back.
- 36:23That'll be a five yard penalty that will take the ball back to the original line of scrimmage at the 28 yard line and once again the Bengals will have a first down at that point here's Pat Haggerty.
- 36:38So the Bengals who had a second and 15 now have a first and 10 at the 49 or 28 yard line the 49ers lead in the ballgame seven to nothing after the turnover the interception by Dwight Hicks down at the five that he ran out to the 32.
- 36:54They proceeded 68 yards to score the first time they had the ball Eric right will have Collins worth to the left Ronnie lot well off the line of scrimmage at the right side on Curtis and a handoff into the line.
- 37:05It's Alexander Charlie will get to about the 27 and that is about all a lot of white jersey 49ers around in there.
- 37:12Willie Harper the linebacker one of the first men to get to a very aggressive tackling by the 49ers Craig Puky was also in in the South they'll put it to 27 give Alexander one it will be second and nine.
- 37:25Ken Anderson now has completed five out of nine for 45 yards he's thrown one interception he's completed only one of his last four passes that was the big one down inside the 30 to Chris Collins worth on this drive five defensive changes for the 49ers.
- 37:41Well 40 left here in the second quarter.
- 37:45One running back to tight ends to wide receivers.
- 37:49Anderson is back to throw it's a four man rush looking fires a downfield five yard line and has caught down there by Collins worth.
- 37:57He lost the ball and the 49ers have a college where they're taking loose.
- 38:03It looked as though he were down but coming up with a ball was salad and Martin and again rather Lynn Thomas and again the Bengals as they did in that first game that's down close only to lose the football and the 49ers will take over at their
- 38:18own seven yard line.
- 38:20It was the deep post being run by Collins worth he caught the ball but then lost it as he was the process of being hit and going down.
- 38:27There's time out on the field with the score.
- 38:30The 49ers seven and the Bengals nothing.
- 38:34The Bengals commit their second turnover of the ballgame Chris Collins worth caught a Ken Anderson pass at the San Francisco five he was stripped of the ball by the rookie defensive back Eric Wright and Lynn Thomas another rookie defensive back for the 49ers recovered at the
- 38:50eight yard line.
- 38:51So the Bengals have had terrible luck in turning the ball over against San Francisco.
- 38:55Give the Niner defense plenty of credit.
- 38:57They hit like a ton of brick.
- 38:58It looks like a carbon copy of the first ballgame.
- 39:00Johnny Davis and Bill Ringer the running backs now as the 49ers take over at their own eight handoff into the left side spinning away and just getting out to the nine yard line as Johnny Davis or short yard.
- 39:09He's man the fourth year man from Alabama and he's pulled down by Wilson Whitley Reggie Williams.
- 39:14Bo Harris Whitley really had the middle jammed up that time and there wasn't much room as Davis tried to cut back.
- 39:21He got the ball to the nine yard line.
- 39:24I believe we can't see it from here the way the Bengals are gathered around it.
- 39:27But it will be second down and nine 49ers continue to play very conservatively deep in their own territory.
- 39:34I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled something tricky here though.
- 39:37I have Clark in title wide receiver out to the left.
- 39:40Montana will hand it off at his ring this time gets out to the ten yard line and he has pulled down right there.
- 39:45A great play at that time by Ross Bronner who went right through the man who was leading the interference.
- 39:52John Ayers the guard who pulled out and Bronner went right through him and got to the ball carrier ring and it looked as though he may have pulled him down by his jersey just beyond the ten yard line after a game of a couple.
- 40:03It'll now be third down and seven.
- 40:05It's the second series where the Niners have had terrible field positions starting at their own ten and their own eight and they've played it very close to the best keeping the ball on the ground afraid of that turnover so close to their own goal line.
- 40:18Solomon and Clark come out wide to the right now they bring ring in motion.
- 40:22Montana rolls out to his right is back to throw fires it up field and it's not about Solomon at the 31 yard line.
- 40:29Ian Clark lined up on that side.
- 40:31Clark continued deep.
- 40:32Solomon cut to the sideline and behind him and the 49ers are out of trouble with a pass play of about 20 yards out to the 31.
- 40:40Montana rolled away to his right that time.
- 40:44They sent them both down the right side and then Solomon cut to the sideline and they have a first and 10 at their own 31.
- 40:50Looks like Freddie Solomon is OK.
- 40:52He's got three balls for 43 yards so far.
- 40:55Joe Montana six out of eight for 69.
- 40:58Now they're back to the first bring running backs Cooper and Patton and they put Solomon and Clark on opposite sides the backs offset to the left.
- 41:05Montana is back to throw.
- 41:07Now he's being flushed out of the pocket he's going to run he's at the 30 we'll get to about the 38 and go out of bounds there with Ross Browner his former teammate at Notre Dame and hot pursuit.
- 41:17But give him about seven or eight yards on the run.
- 41:21It was not designed that way.
- 41:22No one opened and a heavy pass rush forced him out.
- 41:25And Montana turned it into an eight yard gain out to the 39.
- 41:29The 49ers lead at seven nothing.
- 41:31Ten fifty two is the time remaining in the half.
- 41:34And of course in the first ball game won by the 49ers 21 to 3.
- 41:38It was the only game this year that the Bengals have not scored a touchdown.
- 41:42Solomon goes out kind of favoring that left knee.
- 41:44Mike Wilson comes in as the wide receiver first and 10 49ers at their own 39 slot left one wide receiver to the right.
- 41:51It's a pitch off Cooper coming to left.
- 41:53He's at the 40 cuts into the 45 and all the way to the Bengals 48 yard line.
- 41:58Ryan Hicks missed a tackle on him back at about the 43 and it sounds like booze but really they're saying poop poop like they do Pete.
- 42:07Well the Bengals and Cameron and Breeden finally have to haul him down a run to the right.
- 42:11He got past kicks bowled over midfield to the Bengals 48 yard line and that is a round of about 13 yards.
- 42:18Now the 49ers can use all their offensive weapons and they have a very diversified offense.
- 42:23They're out of the shadow of their own goalposts and they can really open things up the way they like to.
- 42:28Mike Wilson comes to the right. White Clark goes left.
- 42:31Running backs are Cooper and Pat. This time they offset to the right.
- 42:36The ball is at the Bengals 48. Now they take a split behind Montana.
- 42:40You'll give the ball up to Pat who cuts into the 45 and is knocked down at the 44.
- 42:45Running in through the right side and he went down there in the grasp of safety Bobby Kemp.
- 42:51So it is a game of about four yards however as he wiggled his way in through the right side.
- 42:57And a game of four well make it about five as they put it down at the 43.
- 43:01It will be second down and five. The clock ticking away down to 940.
- 43:05Don't forget the Bengals official welcome home party tomorrow one o'clock on Fountain Square.
- 43:11Solomon back at the ball game is to the right. Breeden has him.
- 43:14Dwight Clark with Riley on the left. Montana is back to throw.
- 43:17Fires it out in the flat incomplete down at the 35. Solomon was out of bounds.
- 43:22Before Montana could get the ball there.
- 43:24Louis Breeden and Bo Harris had double coverage on them over at this side.
- 43:28And at the Bengals 48 yard line now it becomes third down and five.
- 43:34Ray Griffin, Burley and St. Clair check in as the Bengals will go now to the nickel defense.
- 43:40Reggie Williams has been coming a lot from that right side.
- 43:43But he is only the fourth man the Bengals really have not done a lot of blitzing in this ballgame.
- 43:50The ball is at the Bengals 43 yard line. It is third down and five.
- 43:55A lot left now they bring Clark in motion over to the right side.
- 43:58Montana is back to throw. Now he's going to run back at his own 45.
- 44:02Throws it upfield. It's caught by Clark at the 35 and he'll be knocked down at the 33.
- 44:07Clark came back from downfield to meet the play as Montana was flushed out to his left.
- 44:12And Bo Harris and Lou Breeden finally got him.
- 44:15But not until that broken play results in a first down down at the Bengals 32 yard line.
- 44:21Great improvising by Dwight Clark.
- 44:23Bengals had Clark surrounded in the middle of the field.
- 44:26He made a quick cut to the outside though.
- 44:28He and Montana just have a sixth sense about where each other is going to be.
- 44:32And just a super catch by Clark as he gets the first down.
- 44:36Now Jim LeClair who was over the sideline checks back in.
- 44:39The ball is at the Bengals 32 yard line. A 49er first down.
- 44:43Patten and Earl Cooper the running backs.
- 44:45Now Wilson comes in motion to the right side.
- 44:48A handoff into the line. A big hole and Ricky Patten thunders all the way down to the 22 yard line.
- 44:53Ricky Patten with his head down. Both hands on the ball.
- 44:57Just plunged right into the secondary and Riley and Hicks dropped him.
- 45:00But not until he got very close to 10 yards on the play.
- 45:05The ball is just shy of the 22 yard line.
- 45:07And it will be second down and less than a yard to go for the first down.
- 45:11Bengals missing a lot of tackles.
- 45:13Bob Trumpy has just noted that Wilson Whitley is playing on a gimpy leg.
- 45:17And Wilson has now been replaced at the nose tackle by Rod Hornibilly.
- 45:21Now they have been alternating on these series in the last few ballgames.
- 45:27Second down and short yardage for the 49ers.
- 45:29It goes to Patten. He sneaks inside the 20s.
- 45:32Straight up the middle to maybe the 18.
- 45:34And the 49ers again have the first down.
- 45:36Nothing fancy. Just bugged his way right through the middle.
- 45:39LeClair and Reggie Williams brought him to a halt.
- 45:43And the 49ers leading 7-0.
- 45:45Have a first down now at the Bengals 19 yard line.
- 45:49Apparently Wilson Whitley has bruised or bumped the left knee.
- 45:52He's talking to Dr. Wally Temperman on the sidelines.
- 45:54I think he might have done something very early in the game
- 45:57because it seemed like he was limping on that first Bengals defensive series.
- 46:01But he is out of the game and Rod Horn remains in the nose tackle.
- 46:04Whitley has been having trouble with his elbow for a while.
- 46:07But now it is that right knee.
- 46:09Solomon goes in motion over to the left side.
- 46:12Montana on an end around. It goes to Dwight Clark.
- 46:15He's going to get to the 22 yard line.
- 46:17It'll be dragged right down there by Louis Green.
- 46:19The flag is down.
- 46:20A Bengal got a late hit along the sideline.
- 46:23And that is going to be a personal foul.
- 46:26Dwight Clark was out of bounds.
- 46:27And that is a very, very costly one
- 46:29because they had stopped the play for a loss of a couple of yards.
- 46:36And let's see if they're going to call a clip on the 49ers
- 46:39or a late hit against the Bengals.
- 46:42We've had motions both ways from the teams.
- 46:46We'll see what the officials do.
- 46:50It was Jim LeClair who came in with a shoulder.
- 46:52Louis Breeden wrestled Clark out of bounds.
- 46:55And the penalty will go against Cincinnati on the late hit by Jim LeClair.
- 46:59LeClair had a late hit, a costly one in the first ball game against the 49ers.
- 47:03Number 55 defense, first down.
- 47:06So it is first down now and the 49ers are down at the Bengals' 10 yard line.
- 47:10They lead in the ball game, 7 to nothing with 7-0-1 left to play.
- 47:1649ers have a slot left.
- 47:19Solomon and Clark.
- 47:21Montana is back to throw.
- 47:23Looks far as off into the flat.
- 47:25It's caught by Cooper at the 5 touchdown.
- 47:28Earl Cooper drifted off into the left flat.
- 47:30Nobody picked him up over there.
- 47:32And he caught the ball all by himself at the 5 yard line out on the left flat.
- 47:36A couple of Bengals were at the goal line, but he pulled his way through them
- 47:40and the 49ers go out on top now by a score of 13 to nothing.
- 47:45A 10 yard touchdown pass from Montana to Cooper.
- 47:49And a very, very well conceived 49er offense has resulted in three or four
- 47:55wide open receivers this afternoon.
- 47:57So far it is a carbon copy of the first game.
- 48:00The Bengals got close only to lose the ball.
- 48:02Worshing set to kick off.
- 48:04Squibbs it along the ground.
- 48:06It's picked up finally by Verser, drops the ball at the 7 yard line.
- 48:10At the 5 he's going to be hammered down back there.
- 48:13A squib kick that the Bengals were unable to field.
- 48:17They have a flag down on the play at about the 5 yard line.
- 48:20Verser was hammered down at the 3.
- 48:22Rick Jervis, one of the first men to get to him.
- 48:25And let's see what this penalty flag is going to be.
- 48:29Verser had trouble with it after a Bengal left the ball go right by him at the 15 yard line
- 48:34where he had a good opportunity to pick it up but did not.
- 48:37And as a result the Bengals are really in a deep hole.
- 48:39See if we get an illegal push from behind.
- 48:41Also stopped by number 53, Milt McCull.
- 48:44We do and the Bengals are going to find themselves back maybe at about the 2 yard line.
- 48:49That's the second kickoff that Worshing has squibbed.
- 48:52Obviously they know about David Verser's thumb injury.
- 48:55Just got the cast off today.
- 48:57And that time Verser had difficulty picking up that bouncing foot ball.
- 49:01The Bengals are in brutal field position down at their own 2.
- 49:05With 6 minutes and 42 seconds left in the half.
- 49:10The Bengals got to get the ball out of there just as the 49ers did in the previous drive.
- 49:16Pete Johnson is the sole back.
- 49:18Curtis goes out to the right.
- 49:19To the left side comes Collinsworth.
- 49:23They have two tight ends in the ball game.
- 49:27Anderson with a handoff.
- 49:28Pete Johnson rips his way through the left side behind Munoz out to about the 6 yard line
- 49:32where he's pulled down by Dwayne Borde.
- 49:35Along with Hacksaw Reynolds, one of the inside linebackers.
- 49:38Give Pete 4 on the play out to the 6.
- 49:40It will be second down and 6.
- 49:46The clock running 6.22 is the time left here on the first half.
- 49:49The Bengals have to get on the scoreboard.
- 49:51They trail 14 to nothing.
- 49:53Stay with us during halftime.
- 49:54Bob Truppe will join me for an analysis of the first half of Super Bowl XVI.
- 50:01Bengals ready to go.
- 50:02The two wide receivers out to the left.
- 50:04Second and 6 at their own 6.
- 50:07Anderson goes back to throw.
- 50:08It's that four man rush.
- 50:09Looks, fires it up.
- 50:10The middle is caught by Ross at the 10.
- 50:12He'll cut to the 15 and has the first down.
- 50:15Danny Ross catching a pass right over the middle.
- 50:17He came from the left side.
- 50:18Cut over the middle.
- 50:19Left to right.
- 50:20Took the ball at about the 11 or 12 yard line and got it up to the 15.
- 50:24And the Bengals temporarily are out of trouble as they have a first down.
- 50:28Second reception for Dan Ross.
- 50:31Ken Anderson now 7 out of 11 for 76.
- 50:35He's throwing one interception.
- 50:39Bengals come out with Collinsworth to the left.
- 50:41Curtis out to the right.
- 50:42One running back and the two tight ends.
- 50:44Four defensive linemen in the ball game for the 49ers.
- 50:47Fred Dean is the right end.
- 50:48Boards at right tackle.
- 50:50Anderson again back to throw.
- 50:51Looks, fires out in the flat.
- 50:52Curtis can't hold on to it.
- 50:54A pass a little bit out in front of him.
- 50:56Ronnie Lopp is over covering at about the 28 yard line.
- 51:00Curtis may have gotten one hand on that ball but could not pull it in.
- 51:04So it will come back to the 15 yard line.
- 51:07It will be second down and 10.
- 51:09It stops the clock with 515 left here in the first half.
- 51:13The Bengals have played the 49ers now for a total of 80 minutes of football.
- 51:18In fact 85 and have not scored a touchdown.
- 51:22Got a golden opportunity after recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff.
- 51:26But a quick interception ended that.
- 51:29Second down and 10 Bengals at their own 15.
- 51:33Munoz cut Dean back to throw as Anderson is in the grass.
- 51:37Upfield it goes right through Dan Ross' hands at the 20 yard line.
- 51:41A great bit of scrambling that time by Kenny Anderson to get away from one man.
- 51:45And then Ross not quite expecting that quick flip.
- 51:49Up about seven or eight yards and the usually sticky finger Dan Ross had that one go right through his hands.
- 51:55He may have been able to work his way upfield for a first down had he held on to the ball.
- 51:59He was about five yards beyond the line of scrimmage.
- 52:02And now it becomes third down and 10.
- 52:05Bengals did a good job of picking up Fred Dean that time.
- 52:08They had two people on him and Dean didn't get close to the quarterback.
- 52:11So that's a positive sign for Cincinnati.
- 52:14Now Steve Crider in the ball game for the first second time as the third wide receiver.
- 52:17All three are to the left.
- 52:21Four man rush back to throw Anderson upfield.
- 52:23A dive and a catch at the 24 by Ross.
- 52:26He was not down against the 25 and very close to what was needed for the first down.
- 52:30But I believe that he is going to be about a foot short.
- 52:33Let's see what they spot the ball.
- 52:35He will be on a Bengals putting team goes on in.
- 52:38Ross is about two feet short of a first down.
- 52:42As the nose of the ball is just short at the 25 yard line.
- 52:50Forty nine or defensive backs are doing a good job in single coverage against the Bengals wide receivers.
- 52:55And that's allowed San Francisco to send a lot of people on the blitz and put pressure on the quarterback.
- 53:00Good coverage by the San Francisco DB so far.
- 53:03Fred Solomon and Dwight Hicks back in the vicinity of the 30.
- 53:06Here's a snap back a big rush.
- 53:08McAnally really gets a high lofting kick away.
- 53:11That Hicks will take at the 27.
- 53:13Comes up to the 30 to the 34 yard line.
- 53:16It'll be knocked down at about the 33.
- 53:19He just put his head down when he saw a lot of Bengals coming.
- 53:22And rookie John Simmons along with Jim Hargrove there to get him.
- 53:26There's time out on the field with a score of the 49ers 14 and the Bengals nothing.
- 53:34The Bengals defense has not shown that it can stop the San Francisco offense.
- 53:38The 49ers have driven 68 and 92 yards for touchdowns.
- 53:43The only time the Bengals defense really stopped San Francisco was when the Niners were saddled with terrible field position.
- 53:49And really couldn't show all the tools in their offense.
- 53:52Now is the time right now.
- 53:54They're at their own 34 yard line. Davis and Patton are the running backs.
- 53:58They send Solomon in motion to the left. A handoff fake handoff.
- 54:01Montana back to throw. Fires it up the middle.
- 54:03It's caught by Clark and he is at midfield and down to the Bengals 49 yard line.
- 54:07Bobby Kemp called him down.
- 54:10A good play action fake that time by Montana.
- 54:13Dwight Clark catching those short range passes as he does so well.
- 54:18Wines up with a gain of about 17 yards to the Bengals 49 yard line.
- 54:24Just a short hook by Dwight Clark.
- 54:27He found that the seam in the zone over the middle.
- 54:33Wide open.
- 54:34Ready to go. They have a slot left.
- 54:36Handoff into the line. This time is Ricky Patton.
- 54:38He hammers his way in the right side. Gets a couple of yards maybe to the 46.
- 54:42And he has stopped there. Wilson Whitley.
- 54:45Came over from the middle guard spot to make the tackle. Jim LeClair.
- 54:49Also in there and the ball is short of the 46 yard line.
- 54:53So it's a gain actually of about two and a half yards.
- 54:55And it will be second down and seven and a half.
- 54:58The 49ers on top here by a score of 14 to nothing.
- 55:02The Bengals have been closed twice.
- 55:04Only to lose the ball on an interception. The first time a fumble the second time.
- 55:08We're down to about the three minute mark here in this first half.
- 55:12Now they bring Mike Wilson and Dwight Clark to the right.
- 55:14Handoff again is Patton cutting back and he's got some room.
- 55:17And as he gets down to the 40 down to the 39 yard line before Reggie Williams.
- 55:21And wrestled down his old high school teammate.
- 55:24Some help from Ross Browner and is very close to the seven and a half yards they needed for the first down.
- 55:29As the ball is just over the Bengals 40. It is at the 39 and it is the first down.
- 55:3449ers are really attacking successfully on the ground between the tackles.
- 55:39They're going right at Wilson Whitley who's back in the ball game.
- 55:42Despite some sort of a slight knee injury.
- 55:45In the first game they ran more outside but in this ball game they're attacking the middle of the Bengals defense successfully on the ground.
- 55:52Time left to 15 here in the first half.
- 55:56The game has been dominated by the 49ers.
- 55:58They have a tight formation here on the first and tenth.
- 56:03Now Cooper moves over a step to his right and there's a big split behind Montana.
- 56:07Montana play action is back to throw.
- 56:09Sets up a screen out to Cooper on the right at the 35 and he'll be shoved out of bounds right there.
- 56:14Jim LeClair hit him first and then Louis Breeden came over to help out.
- 56:17Just a little swing to the right to Cooper is good for maybe four yards down to the 35 yard line.
- 56:25And it stops the clock as we are at the two minute warning.
- 56:28There's time out on the field.
- 56:30From Super Bowl 16 at the Pontiac Silver Dome.
- 56:33San Francisco is really milking that clock bill.
- 56:36Working it down the way they did in that final drive when they scored the winning touchdown against Dallas two weeks ago.
- 56:42They know they have enough time to run the football and if they score they don't want the Bengals to have any time left to get a late one before the half.
- 56:50They have all three timeouts remaining.
- 56:52A minute fifty seven left and they have a second and six just toward the Bengal 35.
- 56:57I send Charlie Young in motion over to left Montana back to throw the blitzes out.
- 57:01He throws it in a hurry and the ball is incomplete.
- 57:04He threw it to Young. Glen Cameron nailed him.
- 57:07The blitz was on that time. Bo Harris was coming up the middle.
- 57:12Reggie Williams was coming and Montana really had to get that ball off in a hurry.
- 57:16Let's pause fifteen seconds for station identification.
- 57:19This is the Cincinnati Bengals football network.
- 57:23Gary Burbank mornings. Debbie Conner mid-days. Jim LaBarbara afternoons. Bob Trumpy sports talk. Lin Riley evenings and talknet.
- 57:32The new number one lineup in 82 from W.L.W. Cincinnati.
- 57:39Now Braden and Riley have shifted sides and it's third and sixth.
- 57:43Montana's back to throw again the blitz is on fires it up the middle.
- 57:47The 25 yard line I believe it is a reception down there by Dwight Clark and he is really hammered and getting up rather slowly after he was nailed down there.
- 57:59He ran a slant off the ball amidst a couple of Bengal men.
- 58:02Riley had changed over from the right corner back to the left corner back spot to cover Clark man for man. Clark got to the inside.
- 58:10Caught the ball at the first down at the 25.
- 58:15Now Mike Schumann goes in to replace Clark who was shaken up slightly on the last play.
- 58:19Freddie Solomon is the flanker off to the left.
- 58:23And off to Ricky Patton running wide around the right side.
- 58:26Ross Browner from behind can't slow him up but he does a little he gets inside the 25 and goes out of bounds at the 23.
- 58:34Ross did a heck of a job he penetrated the interference in front of the running back Patton and got a hand on him and just shoved him out of bounds.
- 58:42So again that good quickness by Browner made that slow developing San Francisco sweep really not to do too much.
- 58:49Well it took him time to get both guards pulling out that time.
- 58:52The Tigers and Randy Cross the lead the play it gained three yards to the 22 and it will be second down and seven and Dwight Clark is back on the ballgame.
- 59:01He was only out for one play with a minute and six seconds left the 49ers lead at 14 to nothing.
- 59:06They are down at the Bengals 22.
- 59:10Solomon goes in motion from right to left. Clark is lined up tight in the left side a handoff to Cooper rips his way inside down to the short of the 15 yard line before Browner.
- 59:19And Glenn Cameron could haul him down. He had a trap in there.
- 59:22Now Montana looking for a timeout with 55 seconds left and gets it.
- 59:26That run is good for about six yards to the 16 and it will be third down and less than a yard to go for the first down as the 49ers expend their first timeout.
- 59:37They still have two remaining. They are inexorably on the move.
- 59:41They put the ball back at their own 34 yard line after McAnally's punt.
- 59:46They scored the last series they had a 10 yard pass from Montana to Cooper.
- 59:51And after the Bengals were unable to make a first down from deep in their own territory after that kickoff they took the punt and have come right back and are threatening again.
- 1:00:00And Andy the Bengals can ill afford to be behind 21 to nothing even 17 to nothing 14 to nothing is bad enough.
- 1:00:07The Bengals would have to come out of their game plan down 21 nothing at the half and fill the air with footballs and that certainly is not the way to beat the San Francisco 49ers.
- 1:00:18The way they're running the football the 49ers show they can control the clock and if they know you're going to throw on every down San Francisco is going to be teeing off up front.
- 1:00:28And with their opportunistic defensive backs it's going to be tough to overcome a three touchdown deficit.
- 1:00:33So the Bengals have to come up big on defense here.
- 1:00:36Their offensive line of Audick and Fonors to tackle their errors and cross the guards and Quillen at center has done an outstanding job of blocking the ball is at the 16 yard line.
- 1:00:47It is only a matter of maybe a foot short of a first down.
- 1:00:51The clock is down to 54 seconds left to play.
- 1:00:5449ers are getting six seven yards a crack on the runs and that's just setting up their passing game and really putting an awful lot of pressure on the Bengals defense.
- 1:01:03Montana was over talking to head coach Bill Waltz and the 49ers in a huddle now ready to go.
- 1:01:10Of course the Waltz story.
- 1:01:11How he was with the Cincinnati Bengals for eight years has been rehashed over and over and over again this week.
- 1:01:17Third down short yardage for the 49ers at the Bengals 16 Cooper and Patton offset to the left.
- 1:01:25Dwight Clark is in tight.
- 1:01:26So as young Montana on a keeper dives inside the 15 to the 14 and has the first down.
- 1:01:31Montana scored their first touchdown on a one yard keeper play.
- 1:01:34He gets the first down here.
- 1:01:36Everybody in the middle piled in and brought him down on the stop.
- 1:01:40So they'll go without a huddle this time as the clock is down to 37 seconds.
- 1:01:45All he sends Solomon out of the backfield over the left.
- 1:01:47The Bengals are coming fires it over into the flat.
- 1:01:49Solomon catches it and is wrestled out of bounds by breathing at the five Bengals again at a blitz on.
- 1:01:56But they couldn't get to him.
- 1:01:57And Freddie Solomon who went in motion from the right over to the left just continued out into the left flat and Louis Braden had to wrestle him right down at the five yard line.
- 1:02:06That's about a nine yard game and it will be second down and one and it stops the clock with 29 seconds left to play in that first ballgame.
- 1:02:15They scored on a touchdown pass to Dwight Clark with just about three seconds left in the first half of the ballgame.
- 1:02:22Now they're down knocking at the door with a 14 point lead and 29 seconds left at a second and about to make it at the Bengal five.
- 1:02:33Montana rolling out to his right looking fires up failed at the goal line.
- 1:02:39Ryan Hicks got a hit on Charlie our other Dwight Clark and then Cameron came up and finished him off.
- 1:02:46And he popped up the ball right at the goal line.
- 1:02:50That's the play that Maxie Vaughn the Lions defensive coordinator said for a story in a paper they probably would have something like that.
- 1:02:57Montana rolling out to his right and then looking for Clark that time Hicks may have got a hand on the ball but Clark could not hold on to it.
- 1:03:06So at the five yard line it is now third and one.
- 1:03:10Twenty three seconds left make a third and two twenty three seconds left in the half.
- 1:03:16Montana again goes back to throw how he fires this one and this one he does throw away away as the blitz was on Charlie Young was the closest guy to a camera was hounding him.
- 1:03:27Also went on top up with Eddie Edwards and the Bengals have held and now Ray Wershing will come in for an apparent field goal attempt with 18 seconds left.
- 1:03:35Dwight Clark and he cutting along the end zone on that one that obviously was thrown away and Dwight Clark would have had to be 10 feet four inches tall to reach that one had he been in the vicinity.
- 1:03:46I think the tight end Charlie Young was the nearest 49er and he was about 10 yards away.
- 1:03:52That was definitely a throw away one of the NFL's most accurate field goal kickers Wershing will attempt the 22 yarder.
- 1:03:58The ball is up and it is good.
- 1:04:01With just 15 seconds left Ray Wershing gets a 23 yard field goal and the 49ers firing something quick by the Bengals are going into the dressing room with a large lead.
- 1:04:12It is 17 to nothing.
- 1:04:14That was a 22 yard field goal.
- 1:04:17Wershing has not missed under 30 yards all year long and it is 17 to nothing with just 15 seconds left here in this first half.
- 1:04:27The Bengals have coughed up the ball a couple of times and the 49ers have been able to roll down the field with both of them.
- 1:04:35It was not exactly a quick turnover that set it up because they moved 92 yards with the ball one time after they got the fumble.
- 1:04:42They moved 68 yards the other time.
- 1:04:45Montana getting a tremendous amount of time to throw the ball and he has completed 12 of 18 for 126 yards.
- 1:04:53Four receptions by Dwight Clark, all of them big ones, all third down catches to keep drives going and Freddie Solomon has caught four for 52.
- 1:05:03This time the Bengals wedge men are talking things over to O'Bravik, Archie Griffin and Blake Moore.
- 1:05:09The last time the Bengals really got into a deep hole when one of the wedge men just like the kickoff bounced right by him and the Bengals couldn't feel the ball until Verser picked it up down about the five.
- 1:05:20He was knocked down at the four.
- 1:05:22The Bengals were penalized to the two and really have themselves a problem and that punch resulting from that series eventually led to this late San Francisco field goal.
- 1:05:34So now Wershing will kick off for the third time.
- 1:05:37He has squibbed the first two lined up.
- 1:05:43Wershing set to kick off again.
- 1:05:45He'll squib it along the ground.
- 1:05:47The Bengals are going to be picked up by Archie Griffin drops it and Archie finally gets the ball is knocked out.
- 1:05:52It is loose and let's see who else at the big scramble down at the four yard line and the Bengals playing kick the can with the ball and the 49ers may have it.
- 1:06:06I don't know if I can signal that way but a big scramble down there the Bengals just cannot get their hands on those bouncing kickoff pushing and shoving around down there.
- 1:06:21He is mad and the 49ers do have the ball down at about the four yard line. The last man up off the bottom of the pile is number 53 milk McCall with five seconds left working is going to try a field goal right here instead of just flopping on the ball and being safe.
- 1:06:39the ball was in the air and
- 1:06:40Griffin tried to pick it up
- 1:06:42tried to run with it.
- 1:06:43The ball got away from me was
- 1:06:44hit just as he was in the
- 1:06:46process of picking it up and the
- 1:06:4849ers McCall recovered at the
- 1:06:50five yard line.
- 1:06:51They'll make it the four yard
- 1:06:53line.
- 1:06:57So we're seeing just 10 seconds
- 1:06:59go kick the 22 yard field goal.
- 1:07:01This one will be about 21 Joe
- 1:07:06Montana will hold the Bengals
- 1:07:08off the side.
- 1:07:09Let's see if they were drawn.
- 1:07:13It is much more than an extra
- 1:07:14point attempt right here.
- 1:07:15They were drawn off side by a
- 1:07:17couple of San Francisco linemen
- 1:07:19down this short.
- 1:07:20It doesn't make much difference.
- 1:07:24So the Bengals hoping to hold
- 1:07:26them off and not be behind any
- 1:07:27more than 14 to nothing find
- 1:07:29themselves now with a very
- 1:07:30likely possibility that they'll
- 1:07:32be trailing 20 to nothing at the
- 1:07:33end of this first half.
- 1:07:35So the ball has moved back to
- 1:07:36the nine yard line.
- 1:07:37Montana will put this one down
- 1:07:38and then the Bengals will go
- 1:07:40to the 16.
- 1:07:41This will be a 26 yard attempt
- 1:07:43worshiping to a couple fingers
- 1:07:44by the Bengals on a kickoff that
- 1:07:46really hurt him where he's picked
- 1:07:47up and it is good.
- 1:07:49So with only two seconds left
- 1:07:51it is a 20 to nothing football
- 1:07:52game.
- 1:07:53Worthing gets a second field
- 1:07:55goal and about a 13 second
- 1:07:57period.
- 1:08:00The 49er fans on the far side of
- 1:08:02the field really up and Archie
- 1:08:05Griffin made a very tactical
- 1:08:06error that time by not falling
- 1:08:08off the field and making sure
- 1:08:11that the Bengals got the ball.
- 1:08:12I got away from him when he
- 1:08:13tried to pick it up.
- 1:08:14He was nailed and the 49ers
- 1:08:16wind up with the ball and get a
- 1:08:17quick field goal to make it 20
- 1:08:19to nothing.
- 1:08:2049ers certainly are opportunistic
- 1:08:22they were way plus in turnovers.
- 1:08:26In fact they led the national
- 1:08:27football league and plus 23 in
- 1:08:29the turnover department this
- 1:08:30season and their plus two in
- 1:08:32this ballgame.
- 1:08:33Then goes a fumble twice and
- 1:08:35thrown one interception the
- 1:08:36other with the one Turner
- 1:08:39turnover so far that the Bengals
- 1:08:41weren't able to capitalize on.
- 1:08:43So San Francisco is staying in
- 1:08:44form.
- 1:08:45They've been opportunists all
- 1:08:46year and they continue in this
- 1:08:47game.
- 1:08:48They got three turnovers three
- 1:08:49of them have resulted in scores
- 1:08:51after they got the ball.
- 1:08:54Now this time Griffin drops out
- 1:08:55of the wedge and drops back at
- 1:08:56about the 10 yard line.
- 1:08:58They obviously do not want to
- 1:08:59kick that ball to Bursar.
- 1:09:01They have not in three kickoffs.
- 1:09:03Let's see about this one.
- 1:09:04This one again is swept along
- 1:09:06the line and the Bengals would
- 1:09:08just flop on this ball and have
- 1:09:10it at the 28 yard line.
- 1:09:12And again some players out there
- 1:09:14pushing and shoving a little bit
- 1:09:17Tina Turner is all hot to get in
- 1:09:18there.
- 1:09:19He wasn't involved in the first
- 1:09:20place but the first half has
- 1:09:21come to a close and this is a
- 1:09:2420 to nothing football game and
- 1:09:26the Bengals are going to have to
- 1:09:27have a tremendous second half.
- 1:09:29If they're to get back into this
- 1:09:31Andy McQua Williams will join us
- 1:09:32shortly.
- 1:09:33We'll have it a long half time.
- 1:09:34He'll analyze the first half of
- 1:09:36today's game and a half time
- 1:09:37activities are scored at half
- 1:09:39time here at the Silver Dome is
- 1:09:41the 49ers 20 and the Bengals
- 1:09:44nothing Bengals frail 20 to
- 1:09:47nothing.
- 1:09:48They have played 90 minutes of
- 1:09:49football against the 49ers and
- 1:09:51have not yet scored a touchdown.
- 1:09:53They were down close twice only
- 1:09:55to lose the ball and that of
- 1:09:56course gave them a gift field
- 1:09:58goal right at the end of the
- 1:09:59first half.
- 1:10:00That's the biggest margin any
- 1:10:01team has ever had at half time
- 1:10:03in a Super Bowl and of course no
- 1:10:05team has ever come back from a
- 1:10:06deficit like this to win the
- 1:10:08Super Bowl.
- 1:10:09The Bengals big problem basically
- 1:10:11against the 49ers is they just
- 1:10:13cannot get the ball in the end
- 1:10:14zone.
- 1:10:15The 49ers offensive line tackled
- 1:10:17a tackle has done an outstanding
- 1:10:19job.
- 1:10:20The Bengals only had 99 yards in
- 1:10:22the first half of the ballgame
- 1:10:23and only 26 of those came on
- 1:10:26rushing on the Bengals will get
- 1:10:28the ball to start this second
- 1:10:29half as the 49ers fumble the
- 1:10:32opening kickoff and the Bengals
- 1:10:34were not able to turn it into
- 1:10:35anything.
- 1:10:36They wound up getting an
- 1:10:37interception that was run back
- 1:10:39by Dwight Hicks to the 32 yard
- 1:10:40line and from there they went 68
- 1:10:43yards to score and they were off
- 1:10:44and running.
- 1:10:45The Bengals are going to really
- 1:10:46have to put the ball up in the
- 1:10:47air.
- 1:10:48They only had the ball for 23
- 1:10:49plays in the first half of the
- 1:10:50ballgame and are going to have
- 1:10:52to go to the air undoubtedly in
- 1:10:55that first half.
- 1:10:56McAnally punted twice and Miller
- 1:10:59only had to punt once in the
- 1:11:01ballgame.
- 1:11:01The Bengals are 49ers with two
- 1:11:03penalties and the Bengals with
- 1:11:05five.
- 1:11:05They have nine in the first game
- 1:11:07and it's all too reminiscent of
- 1:11:09that first game and it's going to
- 1:11:11be interesting to see what kind
- 1:11:12of kickoff strategy San Francisco
- 1:11:14employees I imagine they'll
- 1:11:15squib the ball again.
- 1:11:16They've had excellent success
- 1:11:17and just bouncing the ball
- 1:11:19forcing that one fumble that led
- 1:11:21to their second field goal in
- 1:11:22their final score and the Bengals
- 1:11:24just have not been able to handle
- 1:11:26that play at all.
- 1:11:27They've kicked off four times all
- 1:11:29four have been squib kicks and a
- 1:11:31couple of great players.
- 1:11:32They definitely want to get this
- 1:11:33ball on the opening kickoff here
- 1:11:36of the second half and move it
- 1:11:37down the field if they're going
- 1:11:38to have a chance to really get
- 1:11:39that ball into the end zone to
- 1:11:41get themselves a quick touchdown.
- 1:11:42Bengals need some breaks some
- 1:11:44big plays to give them a
- 1:11:45psychological lift.
- 1:11:47They need some light at the end
- 1:11:48of the tunnel and hopefully it
- 1:11:50won't be a train coming at them
- 1:11:51at 90 miles an hour.
- 1:11:52There have been a couple of
- 1:11:53tremendous breakdowns on pass
- 1:11:55defense the Earl Cooper
- 1:11:56touchdown the pass that Solomon
- 1:11:58took down to the five yard line
- 1:12:00and the Bengals have been
- 1:12:01playing a very good round in
- 1:12:02coverage a linebacker did not
- 1:12:03pick up Cooper the Bengals were
- 1:12:05in a man to man defense
- 1:12:06naturally down at the 10 yard
- 1:12:07line or the 11 and on the other
- 1:12:10play noticeably Solomon just
- 1:12:12came in motion into the slot
- 1:12:13veered off into the right and
- 1:12:14there wasn't anybody within eight
- 1:12:16yards of money caught the ball.
- 1:12:18So first sir an archery grip and
- 1:12:19we'll go back deep now the
- 1:12:20Bengals will be going left to
- 1:12:21right here in the Silver Dome
- 1:12:23worst thing will put the ball up
- 1:12:24at the 35 yard line and they've
- 1:12:26been having a lot of luck with
- 1:12:27that script kick so there isn't
- 1:12:29any chance of a strike.
- 1:12:30Blakemore and Michael Bravik are
- 1:12:32the two men in the wedge back at
- 1:12:34the 20 two other men Rosano and
- 1:12:36Fraser at the 30 the Worshing
- 1:12:39advances on the ball that's why
- 1:12:41he hammers high and is deep and
- 1:12:43first it will back up and take
- 1:12:44it right at the goal line the
- 1:12:45wedge form he's up to the 10
- 1:12:47comes to the 15 and will get
- 1:12:48only to the 17 and one of the
- 1:12:5049ers dove into that wedge and
- 1:12:52really took care of things Rick
- 1:12:53service made the tackle short of
- 1:12:56the 20 the ball is at the 17
- 1:12:58and the Bengals will take off
- 1:12:59by Worshing and the Bengals will
- 1:13:01be starting out right there
- 1:13:05Bengals with Kenny Anderson a
- 1:13:06quarterback Alexander and Pete
- 1:13:09Johnson are in the backfield
- 1:13:13Curtis and Collins worth of the
- 1:13:14wide receivers they go out to
- 1:13:16the left the offensive line the
- 1:13:18same Munoz Wilson Lapham Montoya
- 1:13:20Blair Bush the backs in an eye
- 1:13:22now with Alexander the deep man
- 1:13:24Anderson with a pitch back to
- 1:13:25Alexander rips up to the 15 to
- 1:13:27the 25 and out about the 30 at
- 1:13:29the 29 flag thrown on the play
- 1:13:32right behind Alexander and let's
- 1:13:35see what we're going to get is
- 1:13:36the call here Alexander ripped
- 1:13:38to his right out about 12 yards
- 1:13:40white Hicks pushed him out of
- 1:13:41bounds and let's see who is
- 1:13:42going to get the penalty called
- 1:13:44here's Pat Haggard 49ers called
- 1:13:49for a face mask violation turns
- 1:13:52around a face of the Bengals so
- 1:13:54let's get based the other way
- 1:13:55they'll walk off the five yard
- 1:13:57walk off out to the 34 yard line
- 1:13:59so the Bengals get a first down
- 1:14:01five more yards tacked down as
- 1:14:02a result of the face mask they
- 1:14:04will have a first down at their
- 1:14:05own thirty four Bengals come
- 1:14:07right out and try to establish
- 1:14:09the running game Charlie
- 1:14:10Alexander on that pitch right
- 1:14:11picked up excellent yardage
- 1:14:13Bengals had plenty of people out
- 1:14:15in front of him the ball
- 1:14:17statistically is up to thirty
- 1:14:19five yard line Bengals will send
- 1:14:21Collins worth and Curtis off to
- 1:14:22the left Alexander and Johnson
- 1:14:24will make a split behind
- 1:14:25Anderson about five four yards
- 1:14:27deep now Alexander comes in
- 1:14:29motion to the near side of the
- 1:14:30field Anderson with a deep pitch
- 1:14:32out to beat gets a block from
- 1:14:33Charlie will get to the thirty
- 1:14:35seven thirty eight yard line and
- 1:14:37will be run out of bounds right
- 1:14:38there Willie Harper the line
- 1:14:41backer was over there to force
- 1:14:43beat Johnson out of bounds but
- 1:14:45it's going to be a game of about
- 1:14:46four make it three to the thirty
- 1:14:48eight and it will bring up a
- 1:14:49second down and seven the
- 1:14:50Bengals trail one eight and
- 1:14:52seven to the right and then
- 1:14:54Johnson will be running and
- 1:14:56really have to get the offense
- 1:14:57cooking on the off mentioned
- 1:14:59front burner to get back into
- 1:15:01this thing turn up that heat to
- 1:15:04extra high oh yeah Bengals out
- 1:15:07to establish that running game
- 1:15:08early in the third quarter
- 1:15:10Collins worth goes left where
- 1:15:11right picks him up a lot on
- 1:15:13Curtis to the near side now
- 1:15:14Alexander will come outside of
- 1:15:15Curtis on the right Williamson
- 1:15:18the safety comes over to pick
- 1:15:19him up Anderson play action back
- 1:15:20to throw fires on the flat
- 1:15:22yard line he did Williamson was
- 1:15:23right on him right there a
- 1:15:25little a little pitch that was
- 1:15:27good for about three yards
- 1:15:29Curtis went deep downfield he
- 1:15:31was the guy that Anderson wanted
- 1:15:32to go to but he was well covered
- 1:15:34over there by Ronnie lot and he
- 1:15:35had to settle for a three yard
- 1:15:37shovel off to Alexander and it'll
- 1:15:38bring up a third down and for
- 1:15:40Alexander comes out of the ball
- 1:15:41game now and we'll see if they
- 1:15:45go over the two tight ends or
- 1:15:46if Steve Crider is checked in as
- 1:15:48the third wide receiver it is
- 1:15:49the third wide and the four
- 1:15:52defensive linemen in for San
- 1:15:55Francisco now Crider goes left
- 1:15:56all three wide receivers are
- 1:15:58over there flag is down the
- 1:16:0349ers were off side Anderson
- 1:16:05fires it down the middle
- 1:16:06fighter grabs it down at the
- 1:16:0749ers 40 yard line where he is
- 1:16:10pulled down by Ronnie lot out
- 1:16:12the Bengals did not draw him
- 1:16:13off side and they were off side
- 1:16:15the Bengals will take the play
- 1:16:16and will be at the 49ers 40
- 1:16:18looks like what the call is
- 1:16:20going to be it is off side
- 1:16:2249ers Red Dean the right end was
- 1:16:24the man who jumped before the
- 1:16:26ball was snapped and the Bengals
- 1:16:28will have a first down at the
- 1:16:2949er 40 after a 19 yard gainer
- 1:16:32Steve Prider Steve Prider beat
- 1:16:35Ronnie lot on single coverage on
- 1:16:36that deep plant and Friday has
- 1:16:38made the big plays all season
- 1:16:40for Cincinnati is that third
- 1:16:41wide receiver and there's another
- 1:16:43case of a third down conversion
- 1:16:45for Cincinnati going to Steve
- 1:16:46Prider goes left Curtis comes
- 1:16:49right the Bengals need a quick
- 1:16:50score Alexander shifts out of
- 1:16:52the eye into a split and off
- 1:16:55Pete rips into the middle down
- 1:16:56to the 35 yard line.
- 1:16:59Right.
- 1:17:00Over there to help pin him down
- 1:17:01after he was rolled down in the
- 1:17:03arms of middle guard Archie
- 1:17:05race but the rip up the middle
- 1:17:06with a good block on race was
- 1:17:08good for five yards to the 35
- 1:17:10and it will be second down and
- 1:17:12five give the Bengals a lot of
- 1:17:13credit they've come out playing
- 1:17:15good basic football hitting hard
- 1:17:17and establishing that ground
- 1:17:19game and throwing what they've
- 1:17:20had to and they've looked good
- 1:17:22here so far in this first series
- 1:17:23of the third quarter board goes
- 1:17:24out filters comes in a slot left
- 1:17:26with Curtis and Collins where
- 1:17:27his backs in an eye to pitch
- 1:17:29back to the deep man Griffin I
- 1:17:31send the back to Anderson Kenny
- 1:17:32steps up fires on the planet the
- 1:17:3420 yard line Isaac Curtis catches
- 1:17:36the ball and had to go to his
- 1:17:38knees and a flag is down as
- 1:17:40somebody rammed the helmet into
- 1:17:41Curtis filed on when he was down
- 1:17:44when all he had to do was touch
- 1:17:45him a little razzle dazzle
- 1:17:47unveiled and the 49er culprit
- 1:17:49over there is very bright who
- 1:17:52likes to throw you an elbow
- 1:17:53anything like that any
- 1:17:55opportunity he gets Curtis has a
- 1:17:57dive with that ball folded in at
- 1:17:58the 23 that will cost him half
- 1:18:01the distance to the goal line
- 1:18:02right there Curtis was down on
- 1:18:04the ground after diving to come
- 1:18:06up with a ball and then Eric
- 1:18:08Wright slammed into him gave him
- 1:18:14the helmet a very obvious
- 1:18:16flagrant foul something that
- 1:18:17Eric Wright is very good at
- 1:18:20doing the ball will be at the
- 1:18:21eleven it'll be first down there
- 1:18:23was a 49er linebacker lurking
- 1:18:26around Ken Anderson on that
- 1:18:27pitch back from Archie Griffin
- 1:18:28and Dave Lappham made the big
- 1:18:30block to blow that linebacker
- 1:18:32right out of there and give
- 1:18:33Anderson time to throw the ball
- 1:18:34to Curtis the Bengals have been
- 1:18:35down here this close a couple of
- 1:18:37times as Anderson signals for
- 1:18:39quiet they have been down there
- 1:18:40only to turn the ball away now
- 1:18:41Collins worth and Curtis are
- 1:18:43right and right comes over to
- 1:18:45help lot out on that side and
- 1:18:48off into the line Alexander's
- 1:18:49Archie Griffin Archie on his
- 1:18:51feet gets to the seven yard
- 1:18:52line and I'll be a stop there
- 1:18:54standing up Griffin was hit
- 1:18:56bounce off the tackler at about
- 1:18:58the 10 then motor down to
- 1:19:01somewhere the vicinity of a
- 1:19:02seven yard line before Dwight
- 1:19:03Hicks was able to stop him it
- 1:19:05will be a gain of about four and
- 1:19:08it will be second down and say
- 1:19:10so Archie Griffin has figured
- 1:19:11prominently in the last two
- 1:19:13plays he was the man who pitched
- 1:19:14it back to Ken Anderson and he
- 1:19:15carried the football there on
- 1:19:17first down to give Cincinnati a
- 1:19:20good position to operate now the
- 1:19:22Bengals can get this quick
- 1:19:23score there still is some hope
- 1:19:25they trail 20 to nothing now a
- 1:19:27double wing formation to the
- 1:19:29left Anderson with the pitch
- 1:19:31back at Pete Johnson running
- 1:19:33left feet at the 10 get down to
- 1:19:35the seven to the six maybe the
- 1:19:36five yard line before about
- 1:19:38three forty nine is led by Craig
- 1:19:39Pukki and Fred Dean Russell and
- 1:19:41down he ran to his left the end
- 1:19:43at which Dean is playing now the
- 1:19:45Bengals are going to be looking
- 1:19:46at a third down and still about
- 1:19:49five yards to go for the first
- 1:19:50down the ball at the six Bengals
- 1:19:52have had their most success on
- 1:19:54this drive running right away
- 1:19:55from Fred Dean Dean is not a
- 1:20:00real tough man against the run
- 1:20:02himself he got a lot of help
- 1:20:04with some good pursuit out there
- 1:20:05that time and here is the big
- 1:20:06third and five play at the six
- 1:20:13Bengals have three men lined up
- 1:20:15and what looks like an old
- 1:20:16fashioned tee Curtis will come
- 1:20:18out motion and Anderson will go
- 1:20:19back to throw he's going to run
- 1:20:21down five touchdowns and the
- 1:20:29Bengals finally get on the
- 1:20:30scoreboard 49 or down on the goal
- 1:20:34line is taken off where he was
- 1:20:35hit by one of his own teammates
- 1:20:37so Kenny Anderson runs six yards
- 1:20:39for a touchdown and the Bengals
- 1:20:41have scored the first touchdown
- 1:20:43this year in two games against
- 1:20:45the San Francisco 49ers you can
- 1:20:47see the big hole in the middle
- 1:20:48Andy and what he saw he just
- 1:20:50decided to go an eighty three
- 1:20:52yard drive for Cincinnati they
- 1:20:54take three minutes and thirty
- 1:20:55five seconds to get right back
- 1:20:57into this football game great
- 1:20:58defense and the third quarter
- 1:21:00Anderson showed a lot of
- 1:21:01courage running into the teeth
- 1:21:03of that 49er defense so
- 1:21:04credible hold Jim Breach will
- 1:21:06attempt the extra point the
- 1:21:07lines are down this might be a
- 1:21:10big one it is 20 to 6 the ball
- 1:21:12is spotted down Breach's pick is
- 1:21:13up and it's good flag down on
- 1:21:15the play hold the telephone Pat
- 1:21:21Haggerty consulting and the
- 1:21:23Bengals holding their hands up
- 1:21:24to indicate that the penalty is
- 1:21:25against San Francisco illegal
- 1:21:28football team and the Bengals
- 1:21:29have scored the first two
- 1:21:31minutes and thirty five seconds
- 1:21:32and they've got too many men on
- 1:21:33the field so there's time on the
- 1:21:35field with a score now the
- 1:21:3749ers 20 and the Bengals seven
- 1:21:41so the 49ers made the mistakes
- 1:21:44on that drive they couldn't
- 1:21:45handle the Bengal running game
- 1:21:47and that set up the Bengal
- 1:21:48passing game San Francisco took
- 1:21:50two very costly penalties that
- 1:21:52face mask early on and then the
- 1:21:54late hit penalty after the
- 1:21:56completion to Isaac Curtis saw
- 1:21:57the opening game obviously that
- 1:21:59opening game fumble by Amos
- 1:22:01Lawrence the penalty is being
- 1:22:04marked off in the kickoff so
- 1:22:05reach will kick from the 40
- 1:22:06Lawrence fumble the opening
- 1:22:07kickoff he is not in there to
- 1:22:08receive the second kickoff and
- 1:22:10his white heck along with Bill
- 1:22:12Rink Breach will kick from the 40
- 1:22:14yard line and Tom Zinkelo was
- 1:22:15shaken up on the first half is
- 1:22:17back in the ball so Breach gets
- 1:22:22up to kick off hammers it down
- 1:22:24it's a number that bounces at
- 1:22:26the five yard line would you
- 1:22:27know the ball is going to be
- 1:22:28thrown in the net before it gets
- 1:22:30to the goal line and the Bengals
- 1:22:32for the second time I've tried
- 1:22:34to kick that ball to the left
- 1:22:38now we get a ball is going to be
- 1:22:40called on Bobby Leopold
- 1:22:41apparently a personal foul
- 1:22:43something over the far side of
- 1:22:44the field away from the action
- 1:22:45out near the 30 yard line and
- 1:22:48let's see what we're going to
- 1:22:49get on the call from Pat Haggerty
- 1:22:51and how those two are going to
- 1:22:52play the ball will come back
- 1:23:01here's Pat Haggerty a personal
- 1:23:15foul number 52 after the play
- 1:23:17was over a 15 yard penalty we
- 1:23:19have a 15 yard penalty only so
- 1:23:23there is the first time this
- 1:23:24year that I can remember that
- 1:23:26that rule that was changed about
- 1:23:27three years ago where a 15 yard
- 1:23:29penalty has precedent over a
- 1:23:31five so despite the fact that
- 1:23:33the ball was kicked out of bound
- 1:23:34this kickoff will come from the
- 1:23:36forty five yard line without a
- 1:23:38doubt it should be so buried so
- 1:23:40far into the end zone that
- 1:23:41there'll be no run back or
- 1:23:43possibly they might try an on
- 1:23:44side kick twenty to seven now
- 1:23:46the Bengals got back in it and
- 1:23:49the Bengals and the Bengals
- 1:23:50fans team is going to come in
- 1:23:51for San Francisco they're
- 1:23:53expecting that they might see an
- 1:23:55on side kick attempt Bengals
- 1:23:57took three minutes and forty one
- 1:23:58seconds to score a touchdown and
- 1:24:00it is twenty to seven then the
- 1:24:02head coach for us Greg and
- 1:24:03special teams coach Bruce
- 1:24:05Coslet have just completed a
- 1:24:06discussion with Tom Dinkle
- 1:24:08special teams captain and Rick
- 1:24:09Rosano so the Bengals might have
- 1:24:11a rabbit up their sleeve or
- 1:24:13something up their sleeve here
- 1:24:14in this play well then go the
- 1:24:1549ers are looking for an on side
- 1:24:17kickoff reception unit they have
- 1:24:19the guys with the good hands in
- 1:24:20there now Bill Ring is up there
- 1:24:22Dwight Hicks Charlie Young
- 1:24:24Leopold the kickoff will come
- 1:24:26from the 49ers forty five yard
- 1:24:28line so let's see what they do
- 1:24:30here's breech he kicks it along
- 1:24:31the ground and it bounces down
- 1:24:33through everybody and goes on
- 1:24:34into the end zone so it'll be a
- 1:24:39touchback it'll come out to the
- 1:24:40twenty yard line what the doctor
- 1:24:43has ordered right now for the
- 1:24:44Bengals is just to stop the forty
- 1:24:46nineers right there and get that
- 1:24:47ball right back get another
- 1:24:50score and really get some
- 1:24:52momentum going the 49ers will
- 1:24:55take over at their own 20 Joe
- 1:24:57Montana in the first half of the
- 1:24:59ballgame was not sacked he was
- 1:25:01hurried a few times he wound up
- 1:25:03hitting 12 out of 18 for one
- 1:25:05hundred thirty two yards an
- 1:25:06average of about seven yards and
- 1:25:08a tenth now Freddie Solomon
- 1:25:10definitely favoring that left
- 1:25:11leg comes out to the left white
- 1:25:13Clark is at the right the backs
- 1:25:14are off that now they send Earl
- 1:25:15Cooper in motion Montana goes
- 1:25:17back to throw it to safety flip
- 1:25:19Ross Browner down the ten yard
- 1:25:21line Bobby Kemp came through on
- 1:25:24the inside and Ross Browner came
- 1:25:26through from the outside they
- 1:25:27blitzed on the first play and
- 1:25:29they dropped Montana for the
- 1:25:31first time this afternoon back
- 1:25:33at the ten yard line and I kind
- 1:25:34of think that Bobby Kemp coming
- 1:25:35up the middle was the guy who
- 1:25:37made that play Montana did not
- 1:25:40see Browner he was blindsided
- 1:25:41there Ross caught him just above
- 1:25:44the shoulder level and Browner
- 1:25:46has played a strong game
- 1:25:48defensively for Cincinnati's
- 1:25:49turned in a couple of good
- 1:25:50plays against the rush and now
- 1:25:52he registers the vendors first
- 1:25:53quarterback sack of the
- 1:25:55afternoon go to second down at
- 1:25:56about nineteen and a half back
- 1:25:57and come down on the 10th
- 1:25:59Parkinson Solomon on opposite
- 1:26:00sides Montana back to throw this
- 1:26:02time he's going for the long one
- 1:26:04downfield for Solomon a jump who
- 1:26:06has the ball nobody Solomon and
- 1:26:09Brian Hicks were wrestling for
- 1:26:11the ball in the air and for that
- 1:26:13second it appeared that Solomon
- 1:26:14might have it but then the ball
- 1:26:16was wrestled away from him and
- 1:26:18it fell incomplete.
- 1:26:20No one come all the way back to
- 1:26:21the 10 yard line now it will be
- 1:26:23third and 20.
- 1:26:25Louis Breeden went up with
- 1:26:26Freddie Solomon the ball was
- 1:26:28juggled.
- 1:26:28Solomon looked like he might
- 1:26:30have had possession there for a
- 1:26:31moment.
- 1:26:32Hicks came over and gave him a
- 1:26:34leg the ball popped loose but
- 1:26:36they wrote it in completion.
- 1:26:37Looked like Montana hung the
- 1:26:39pass a bit all the ball comes
- 1:26:42all the way back to the 10 yard
- 1:26:44line.
- 1:26:45Now the Bengals need a big play
- 1:26:45on defense to stop them right
- 1:26:47here.
- 1:26:47Or the pump from deep in their
- 1:26:49own territory and get it right
- 1:26:50back.
- 1:26:53It's now Wilson to the right
- 1:26:54white card to the left on Santa
- 1:26:56hands off around the right side
- 1:26:58cutting to the 14 yard line and
- 1:27:00Reggie Williams nails Ricky
- 1:27:01Patton.
- 1:27:03They only get about four or five
- 1:27:04yards on the run.
- 1:27:05The Bengals have what they want
- 1:27:07they will force the 49ers to
- 1:27:09come out of the hole.
- 1:27:10The
- 1:27:29first down putting San Francisco
- 1:27:31in difficult down and distant
- 1:27:32situations and they really
- 1:27:34conceded on that third down play
- 1:27:36running a sweep right.
- 1:27:37The Bengals have a good lead for
- 1:27:38San Francisco Mike Fuller the
- 1:27:40sole safety back at the Bengals
- 1:27:42forty five yard line.
- 1:27:44There's a snap back to Miller a
- 1:27:45big rush is on but he gets it
- 1:27:46away a good high spiral.
- 1:27:48The football back up to about the
- 1:27:5038 comes up to the 40 to the
- 1:27:52forty five fifty and down to the
- 1:27:5449ers forty nine yard line.
- 1:27:57Mike Fuller really picked his
- 1:27:58way through about three or four
- 1:28:00forty niners coming downfield
- 1:28:01and the Bengals have excellent
- 1:28:02field position.
- 1:28:04I'm out of the field with a
- 1:28:06twenty on the Bengals seven.
- 1:28:10The Bengals fans here at the
- 1:28:12Silver Dome have finally found
- 1:28:13something to yell about.
- 1:28:14They're on their feet.
- 1:28:15And here we go.
- 1:28:16Bengals at Cincinnati has scored
- 1:28:18an early third quarter touchdown
- 1:28:21they have held the 49ers on a
- 1:28:23quick series and now they get
- 1:28:24the ball back in excellent field
- 1:28:26position just into San Francisco
- 1:28:29territory at the 49 yard line.
- 1:28:31The Bengals did it successfully
- 1:28:33last time they had the ball
- 1:28:34built by establishing the run in
- 1:28:37that nine play drive they ran
- 1:28:39the ball six times and they only
- 1:28:40threw when it was to their
- 1:28:42advantage to throw the football.
- 1:28:43So again I imagine they'll come
- 1:28:44out and try to ram this ball
- 1:28:46right down the 49ers.
- 1:28:47They did have good luck running
- 1:28:48it on a last series as they did
- 1:28:50in the first game.
- 1:28:51Alexander goes wide to the left
- 1:28:52outside Collins where the three
- 1:28:54man defensive front now for the
- 1:28:5549ers Anderson with a handoff
- 1:28:58at speed Johnson ripping into
- 1:28:59the line.
- 1:29:00He gets about three yards but
- 1:29:01the going is tough.
- 1:29:02He's stacked up with the 49ers
- 1:29:04and the 49ers forty six.
- 1:29:06Let's pause 15 seconds for
- 1:29:07station identification.
- 1:29:09This is the Cincinnati Bengals
- 1:29:10football network the home of the
- 1:29:14American Football Conference
- 1:29:16champion Cincinnati Bengals and
- 1:29:18the flagship station of the
- 1:29:20Cincinnati Bengals football
- 1:29:21network.
- 1:29:22This is W.L.W. Cincinnati the
- 1:29:2849ers make four defensive
- 1:29:30substitutions a game of three.
- 1:29:31They're going to be seven at the
- 1:29:3449 or forty six Alexander
- 1:29:37outside of Curtis to the right
- 1:29:38only Pete Johnson a quick shot
- 1:29:40out to Collins worth he can't
- 1:29:42hold on to it as they tried to
- 1:29:43set up a screen out there.
- 1:29:44The 49ers have the play well
- 1:29:46covered over on that side.
- 1:29:47I've got as worth of one step
- 1:29:49downfield.
- 1:29:50The pass was a little low down
- 1:29:51about knee high and he went down
- 1:29:53and tried to come up with it but
- 1:29:54could not.
- 1:29:55So now a big third and seven
- 1:29:57play at the 49 or forty six yard
- 1:29:59line.
- 1:30:00Dan Ross will come out.
- 1:30:01Steve Crider will check in as
- 1:30:02the third wide receiver and
- 1:30:03David Burser is in the ballgame
- 1:30:05now Burser Crider and
- 1:30:07Collins worth are the oh they've
- 1:30:10got four wide receivers.
- 1:30:12This is the first time we've
- 1:30:13seen much of this or wide
- 1:30:14receiver formation since back in
- 1:30:17the Pittsburgh game.
- 1:30:20A three man rush back to throw
- 1:30:21his Anderson looks off to his
- 1:30:23right now is the 45 yard line
- 1:30:25will be run out of bounds as he
- 1:30:27can't get the ball away.
- 1:30:28Bobby Leopold was over there to
- 1:30:30push him out of bounds.
- 1:30:31He just about got back to the
- 1:30:32line of scrimmage and that was
- 1:30:33all the Bengals were able to
- 1:30:35make only three yards and now
- 1:30:37McAnally will go on the ballgame
- 1:30:38for an apparent one.
- 1:30:40They have the four wide
- 1:30:41receivers and Dave Burser became
- 1:30:43the fourth with nothing
- 1:30:44materialized at all.
- 1:30:49So now again it is Hicks and
- 1:30:51Freddie Solomon back as the twin
- 1:30:52safeties if it is to be a punt
- 1:30:54and you have to think that it
- 1:30:55will be.
- 1:30:56Collins worth getting a little
- 1:30:57equipment repair along the
- 1:30:59sideline.
- 1:31:01They're standing back on the 10
- 1:31:03yard line.
- 1:31:04The line of scrimmage is the 46
- 1:31:07there's a good snap back to
- 1:31:08McAnally.
- 1:31:09He angles it high into the air
- 1:31:11fair catch called for by Solomon
- 1:31:13at the 15 and he takes it right
- 1:31:14there a flag is down on the
- 1:31:16playback at the line of
- 1:31:17scrimmage and we had a man
- 1:31:20downfield too quickly for the
- 1:31:21Bengals.
- 1:31:23No no no no no no no no no no
- 1:31:25no no no no no.
- 1:31:28No man downfield number 36.
- 1:31:31We did we have Jim Hargo
- 1:31:33leaving going downfield before
- 1:31:35the ball was plotted and we'll
- 1:31:38see what the 49ers do with it.
- 1:31:39If they decline the penalty they
- 1:31:40will have the ball right at
- 1:31:42their own 15 yard line.
- 1:31:43It looks as though they are
- 1:31:44going to decline it.
- 1:31:45They are and they will take over
- 1:31:46the ball that their 15 all the
- 1:31:50Bengals getting just what they
- 1:31:51wanted a score on the first
- 1:31:52could not lose the football that have been forced to give it up.
- 1:31:55It's a 20 to 7 football game, and there's time out in the field
- 1:31:58with the score of the 49ers 20 and the Bengals 7.
- 1:32:03We want to remind you of the official welcome home party for the Cincinnati Bengals tomorrow
- 1:32:08on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
- 1:32:11Gary Burbank and Jim LaBarbera from WLW will be there at noon to help you get ready to welcome
- 1:32:17the Bengals home from Pontiac. And that'll be one o'clock tomorrow at the fountain.
- 1:32:21The official Bengals welcome home party. I put Charlie Young in a slot left.
- 1:32:26Actually a double wing formation wide receivers on both sides.
- 1:32:29Now he goes in motion to the far side of the field.
- 1:32:31On Santa with a pitch back to Earl Cooper. There's no place to go and he's going to be
- 1:32:35nailed for a loss. Leclerc and Browner get him back at about the 12 yard line.
- 1:32:39Again they pulled the two guards, but they couldn't clear out the Bengals.
- 1:32:43Reggie Williams along with Ross Browner just pursued along the line of scrimmage.
- 1:32:48Leclerc cut through behind and they nailed Cooper for a loss of a couple of yards back
- 1:32:52to the 13. Now it'll be second down and 12. That little pitch play was working for the
- 1:32:5749ers in the first half but not in the second as Cincinnati is getting much better penetration.
- 1:33:01And again Ross Browner is the man leading the charge.
- 1:33:05So he'll send Solomon out to the right.
- 1:33:08They've worked tight on the left side. Second down and 12. 49ers at their own 13.
- 1:33:13Montana play action. Hands off the ring around the right side. Eddie Edwards will wrap them up
- 1:33:17and they knock him down right at the 13 right at the line of scrimmage. When Edwards got
- 1:33:21hold of him with wrestling on Harris, can't we? And Hicks really got there in a hurry. He may
- 1:33:26have gained a yard on the play, but now it'll bring up a third down and about 11. So the Bengals
- 1:33:31defense is stiff. It was one, two, three and punt the first time the 49ers had the ball.
- 1:33:36Now Burleigh St. Blair and Ray Griffin check in as the Bengals will go to the nickel. Mike Wilson
- 1:33:41has gone in to replace Fred Solomon, a wide receiver for the 49ers. Wilson will go out to
- 1:33:46the right side. White Clark again lining up tight on the left side.
- 1:33:52Well, they send ring in motion over the right side. Montana will go back to throw. Rolls out
- 1:33:56to his right. Looks upfield. Throws and the man is knocked out of bounds at about the
- 1:34:0116, 17 yard line. Again of all the short yardage. Bill Ring comes to pass. Far short of what they
- 1:34:07needed for the first down. And again, the Bengals faithful are up on their feet as the Bengals have
- 1:34:11held one, two, three and punt. And the line is really to the 16. So they made just three yards
- 1:34:17on that last play. Gets the punt away. It's a dandy. Mike Fuller back all the way back to the 32.
- 1:34:23Comes up to the 35 to the 40 to the 45 to the 49 yard line. Very close to midfield before he's
- 1:34:29knocked down by Kenia Turner. Jim Miller just out punted his coverage that time. And Fuller had
- 1:34:34about 12 or 14 yards to run before any 49er got there. And they punted from very close to the same
- 1:34:41position. The Bengals will start from very close to the same position right at midfield.
- 1:34:46Rookie John Simmons almost got to that punt. He was just barely touched out of the play
- 1:34:52after he tried to get it and almost got the football coming off Miller's foot there.
- 1:34:57So the 49ers are negative yardage on two theories here in the third quarter. And the Bengals go to
- 1:35:03work in midfield. Collins-Worth to the left. Curtis to the right. Now Alexander will go
- 1:35:07wide outside of Collins-Worth. That brings the safety up on Collins-Worth. The corner on the
- 1:35:13outside. Anderson rolling out to his right. Looks upfield. Now he's going to run. A flag is down
- 1:35:19right in front of where he was tackled at the 50 yard line by Willie Harper. And maybe the
- 1:35:23infraction was against Dan Ross who was out there in front. Let's see. It is going to be
- 1:35:29against the Bengals. I think Dan Ross may have forced or perhaps gotten the cliff there. Left end.
- 1:35:34And Jim Stuckey did not go for that fake bootleg that time at all. He just stayed right there and
- 1:35:40Dan Ross from behind had to give a shove. And I believe that will cost the Bengals 10 yards.
- 1:35:4549ers have defenced that rollout bootleg, whatever you want to call it,
- 1:35:49effectively so far this afternoon. They've had a lot of film to look at in the last two weeks and
- 1:35:55they've done a good job of cutting down Anderson's efficiency there.
- 1:35:59And Dan Ross for holding was the call. It's the case of the end just having to stay position,
- 1:36:03not cutting inside when he sees the flow go that way. And that time Stuckey stayed right there. Now
- 1:36:10they'll go to the foreman line. Dean checks in. The Bengals have a first and 20 now back at their
- 1:36:15own 41. Steve Crider is the third wide receiver and again he will go to the left and join the other two.
- 1:36:20Anderson back to throw. Look, fires out a flat. Caught by Ross, the 45, the 50,
- 1:36:25down to the 49ers, 45, 44 yard line before Eric Wright can wrap it up.
- 1:36:31And another flag thrown on the play downfield and let's see what this one is going to be.
- 1:36:41The Bengals have the ball at the 49er 44.
- 1:36:44It would be second down and about three unless the penalty is against the Bengals.
- 1:36:51The Bengals had five penalties in the first half and picked up one here in the third quarter.
- 1:36:59We're going to have a walk off against the Bengals from the point that the pass was completed,
- 1:37:06which was the first one.
- 1:37:07The 49ers 45 yard line. Dan Ross motored out all by himself on that play.
- 1:37:22Matt Hagerty will walk off 15 yards and that'll take it all the way back to the 40.
- 1:37:26There was a late hit on the part of one of the Bengals and the Bengals are right back
- 1:37:29where the play started and they will have a first and 20 back at their own 41.
- 1:37:32So a costly penalty wiping out that gain. Here's the call.
- 1:37:39Personal foul, dead ball foul, count count, down count, so it is second down.
- 1:37:44Oh, it's a dead ball foul so the down count, it will be second down and 20.
- 1:37:49Now the Bengals are back at their own 40.
- 1:37:58We didn't get the number of the man who hit late on the play.
- 1:38:01Oh, Steve Crider.
- 1:38:05Now Crider goes out as the third wide receiver out to the left.
- 1:38:08Second and 20 Bengals back at their own 40 again.
- 1:38:10Anderson back to throw.
- 1:38:12Look, steps up. Now he's going to run and he's
- 1:38:14coming from behind and dropped back at the 36.
- 1:38:17Fred Dean coming around from the outside.
- 1:38:20Circles trailed Anderson up the middle and dropped him.
- 1:38:22Joe Kenny is back for the third time this afternoon
- 1:38:26and that is the loss of about five more yards on the 49er defense after allowing that first
- 1:38:30touchdown drive really has come back to assert itself at his third down now and 25.
- 1:38:36Good effort by Fred Dean. Munoz had him down on the astroturf.
- 1:38:40He got up and got Anderson as Ken stepped up into the pocket.
- 1:38:43So Munoz did his job initially but Fred Dean with the extra effort pursued,
- 1:38:48kept at it and sacked the quarterback.
- 1:38:50I don't know what Steve Crider was thinking a blocking lot as late as he did.
- 1:38:53It really wiped out a big gain down to the 45.
- 1:38:55Now it's third and 25.
- 1:38:57Anderson back to throw.
- 1:38:58Goes long down the field and centered for Collinsworth.
- 1:39:01He has it all the way down at the 15 yard line and a flag is out as he beat Eric Wright.
- 1:39:07That's certainly one Collinsworth one on one against Wright.
- 1:39:10Anderson lays the ball up in the air and I think that Wright probably shoved him but
- 1:39:14Collinsworth caught the ball down at the 17 yard line, went to the 14
- 1:39:19and if he did interfere the penalty will be tacked down from right there.
- 1:39:22That's time Collinsworth got him.
- 1:39:24Same pattern that misfired in the first quarter, Phil.
- 1:39:28Again one on one coverage and Collinsworth beat him cleanly and caught the ball over the shoulder.
- 1:39:38So the ball is put at the 14 yard line.
- 1:39:43That may have been just the indication of where the ball was caught because nothing has been
- 1:39:49walked off.
- 1:39:50It is a 50 yard pass play from Anderson to Collinsworth and it'll be a first down at the 49 or 14.
- 1:39:58Right one of the three rookies in the backfield along with Williamson and Ronnie Lott.
- 1:40:02Now Curtis and Collinsworth come to the right.
- 1:40:04Chris gets a big big catch.
- 1:40:09The backs are in and I have to pitch back to Alexander running left.
- 1:40:12Darnley cuts in gets inside the 15 and maybe about the 13.
- 1:40:15A gain of only about a yard.
- 1:40:17Dwayne Borden and Jack Reynolds were over there to hammer Alexander down as he tried to wide sweep
- 1:40:22to the left and then cutting back and it gained only a yard.
- 1:40:25So now it becomes second down and nine.
- 1:40:28Anderson getting more time to throw the football here in the third quarter.
- 1:40:31That time on the straight streak he had a good four or five seconds to unleash that long pass
- 1:40:37to Collinsworth and Chris just had super concentration in catching that ball over his shoulder.
- 1:40:42Well they rest with only three men and that gave Anderson a long long time to throw.
- 1:40:47So the second down and nine at the 49 or 13.
- 1:40:50Collinsworth left Curtis to the right the backs with a big split passing formation.
- 1:40:54Anderson is back to throw the blitz is on.
- 1:40:56Look now he's going to be hit will be dropped at the 15.
- 1:40:59Axel Reynolds on the blitz got him from behind and he is going to lose two and Anderson is
- 1:41:04sacked for the fourth time now and now it becomes third down and nine at the 15.
- 1:41:10Bengals trailed in a football game 20 to 7 but they have come out really have taken the play
- 1:41:14away from the 49ers here in this third quarter.
- 1:41:17Bengals have overcome some adversity in this drive.
- 1:41:20Bill that holding penalty against Dan Ross and then the personal foul against
- 1:41:24Crider and Cincinnati's shown some character in overcoming those problems.
- 1:41:28Well it was third and 25 on the 50 yard touchdown pass or rather 50 yard pass to Collinsworth.
- 1:41:36Five defensive backs in for San Francisco.
- 1:41:39Now Crider comes in motion from left to right.
- 1:41:41He'll draw two men.
- 1:41:42Anderson back to throw looks fires down Dan Ross catches it at the five yard line and
- 1:41:47has knocked down right there and the Bengals I believe are going to have a first down at the five.
- 1:41:52Ross went down hook girls came back and let's see what they're going to put the ball they
- 1:41:58put it at the five yard line which means it is a matter of just about three or four inches
- 1:42:04short of a first down.
- 1:42:05It'll be fourth down and jump those inches to go.
- 1:42:08Anderson really drilled the football Dan Ross and
- 1:42:11a quick turnaround at about the five and Anderson although he was pressured just
- 1:42:16to fire the ball as hard as I've ever seen him throw it.
- 1:42:19Forty-niners make a lot of defensive changes.
- 1:42:22The Bengals come up quickly to the line of Frimley.
- 1:42:24Bengals are going to go for it.
- 1:42:26They have two tight ends in there.
- 1:42:27Alexander and Johnson in the backfield.
- 1:42:30They send Bursar in motion a handoff.
- 1:42:32He has it as he whams inside the right side down to about the three.
- 1:42:36Pete Johnson running right behind big Mike Wilson.
- 1:42:39On the right side picks up the first down at the three and it will be first down and
- 1:42:46goal a lot of 49ers down at the bottom of that stack.
- 1:42:49But Pete Johnson ripped to the three.
- 1:42:51It will be first and goal a complete flip flop here in the third quarter.
- 1:42:55Phil the Bengals have controlled the football with the exception of a minute and 34 seconds.
- 1:43:01The 49ers have had the ball for only six plays in this third quarter of the football game.
- 1:43:07Six plays and two points.
- 1:43:08All right they've gone one two three point twice.
- 1:43:11First and goal at the three.
- 1:43:12A late substitution comes in for the 49ers.
- 1:43:16Tina Turner first and goal at the three.
- 1:43:18Alexander and Johnson the two running backs are in.
- 1:43:20Bursar goes in motion to the far side.
- 1:43:22A handoff.
- 1:43:22Pete rams down to the one yard line.
- 1:43:26Right in behind Dave Lapham at left guard that time.
- 1:43:28Hit by Dan Buns the linebacker who is in on the goal line defense.
- 1:43:32Pete Johnson takes it to the one.
- 1:43:34The Bengals will have a second and goal and back inside the one yard line.
- 1:43:38By about the length of the football Bengals training 20 to 7.
- 1:43:42Really need a touchdown right here and they'll be right back in this football game.
- 1:43:46Claire Bush did a great job of moving the nose tackle Archie Reese right out of the area.
- 1:43:50And Johnson picks up two to the one.
- 1:43:53So the Bengals do the scored once in the third quarter bidding to score here again.
- 1:43:57The backs are offset to Anderson's left.
- 1:44:00Now he sends Bursar in motion to the left side.
- 1:44:02Gives it to Pete.
- 1:44:03Hammers left side and he has stopped hold.
- 1:44:05He may have lost the yard on that play.
- 1:44:07He was really nailed as he tried to go in over that left side.
- 1:44:11He was hammered down at the two yard line.
- 1:44:13John Hardy a rookie from Iowa.
- 1:44:17The last man to get up off the bottom of the stack.
- 1:44:19He lost about a half a yard.
- 1:44:20The ball is outside the one yard line.
- 1:44:23It will be third down and goal.
- 1:44:25Boy Hacksaw Reynolds came over and moving to his right and filled the hole and really put a shot
- 1:44:30into the lead blocker Charlie Alexander and knocked him right back into Pete Johnson.
- 1:44:34So it is third down a big one right here.
- 1:44:36Let's see what the Bengals will try to pull out.
- 1:44:40Bursar is the wingman to the left.
- 1:44:42Now he comes in motion to the right side.
- 1:44:44Anderson with the ball drops back to throw off in a flat Alexander.
- 1:44:47He's going to be knocked down just short of the goal line.
- 1:44:50Coming over there with Dan Bunn.
- 1:44:52That ball is going to be about four inches away from the goal line.
- 1:44:57And I believe that the Bengals probably are going to go for it.
- 1:45:00Now the Bengals want to see what they're going to do.
- 1:45:08The ball is just inches away as we check that they're going to call a time out to talk things
- 1:45:13over. The Bengals have about perhaps well 14 inches to go for the touchdown.
- 1:45:18Time out on the field with a score.
- 1:45:20The Bengals are the 49ers 20 and the Bengals 7.
- 1:45:24Celebrating 60 years of service and the home of the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.
- 1:45:31This is Cincinnati Radio WLW.
- 1:45:36Bengals are going to go for it.
- 1:45:37Fourth down and about a foot away.
- 1:45:40Both lines jammed in tight.
- 1:45:42And I'll Pete Johnson rammed the right side and I don't believe he made it.
- 1:45:47The 49ers have held.
- 1:45:48The Bengals had a first down at the three yard line and did not make it.
- 1:45:55And that should really inspire the San Francisco 49ers.
- 1:45:58Just a tremendous goal line stand.
- 1:46:01And the Bengals down there close could not get the ball in.
- 1:46:04They made nothing on that play on the right side.
- 1:46:07Well let us have to hold the 49ers down here now and get the ball back and force them to
- 1:46:11punt from deep in their own territory.
- 1:46:14The 49ers really caved in on that right side.
- 1:46:17We were speculating here at the time out.
- 1:46:20I think maybe Anderson just ought to keep that ball on a keeper but he gave it off to
- 1:46:23Pete Johnson and Pete ran into a stone wall on the right side.
- 1:46:26The 49ers have held and they will take over with a minute and 17 seconds left in this
- 1:46:32third quarter.
- 1:46:33We mentioned it earlier the 49ers were tough against the Russian the regular season and
- 1:46:37in the first two playoff games allowing only 10 rushing touchdowns and they put on a
- 1:46:43super goal line stand there.
- 1:46:45The nose of the football is just about four or five inches away from the line.
- 1:46:48So the Bengals for the third time here in the second half will have to hold them down
- 1:46:53there force the punt from deep in their own territory.
- 1:46:55There are only a minute and 17 seconds left to play in this third quarter.
- 1:46:59The Bengals took the second half kickoff and just proceeded to go 83 yards for a touchdown.
- 1:47:05They got down close again but the 49ers have held.
- 1:47:08Dan Buns made the big play on that third down and that little pass out into the flat field
- 1:47:13that Charlie Alexander looked like Charlie might weasel his way into the end zone.
- 1:47:19But Buns made a short tackle and kept him out and then the Bengals could not convert
- 1:47:24on that fourth and less than a yard from inside the one.
- 1:47:27The third quarter has been all Bengals.
- 1:47:29They have scored seven points to trail 20 to seven of the 49ers have had the ball for
- 1:47:34only eight plays.
- 1:47:35Two of them have been put in the clear checking the defensive coordinator Hank Bullough over
- 1:47:40at the sidelines got the two tight ends Charlie Young and he's ramped in the ballgame.
- 1:47:46Joe Montana stands in the end zone as he comes up to his center Fred Quillen handoff right
- 1:47:51side out to about the four yard line comes Bill Ring a little running room made about
- 1:47:56four yards Bobby Camp over there to hold him down along with Bo Harris Cameron.
- 1:48:00But he moved the ball out about four yards.
- 1:48:02Ring has been a valuable pickup man a free agent out of Brigham Young and he of course
- 1:48:07had a touchdown a little pass play on that first ball game in Cincinnati.
- 1:48:11This is the 49ers third possession of the third quarter and they have yet to score a
- 1:48:16first down and they've had the ball for only nine plays.
- 1:48:21It'll be second down and seven at their four.
- 1:48:25They have Johnny Davis and Bill Ring in the backfield handoff right side it's ring he
- 1:48:29breaks out to about the seven yard line had a little more running room than that and it
- 1:48:33was Bo Harris who knocked his legs out from under him he fell forward and Bobby Camp pinned
- 1:48:38him down Jim LeClair in a kneeling position on the field and is injured.
- 1:48:45Jim LeClair who has played all year with a bum knee and a bum shoulder now down on the
- 1:48:49ground at about the seven yard line.
- 1:48:52They gained three more and it will be third down and four.
- 1:48:55So while he temperament along with Tom Gray hustle out on the field to take a look at
- 1:48:59Jim LeClair who is holding on to his left knee.
- 1:49:09Both Tom Dinkle and Rick Rosano are huddled around the
- 1:49:14Bengal defensive coordinator to Hank Fuller.
- 1:49:18I would guess if Dinkle is completely healthy he'll be the man.
- 1:49:23He's played both inside and outside Rosano filled in so well for LeClair earlier in the
- 1:49:29season though especially in that Baltimore game he played just superbly so it may be
- 1:49:33Rosano who comes in to fill in for Jim LeClair.
- 1:49:36Jim LeClair is up and he is being helped off the field very very gingerly on that left
- 1:49:41knee.
- 1:49:42You know Andy the five Bengals who were in the Pro Bowl were scheduled to leave from
- 1:49:47here and go right to Hawaii but they are not.
- 1:49:49They are coming home with the Bengals tomorrow and Mike Brown said if they're fine for not
- 1:49:54getting there and they're late we'll pay the fine.
- 1:49:56We want them back home where they can get their proper greeting as far as the Cincinnati
- 1:50:00fans are concerned.
- 1:50:01I'd have to agree with that decision wholeheartedly.
- 1:50:04I know the players would want to be a part of that welcome that they're going to get
- 1:50:08in Cincinnati tomorrow.
- 1:50:09The ball is up at the eight yard line so actually it'll be third down and about three.
- 1:50:13It is Rick Rosano out of Virginia Tech who fills in at the inside linebacker spot for
- 1:50:18the injured Jim LeClair.
- 1:50:19You have to think that LeClair probably is through for the day because of that twisted
- 1:50:23knee.
- 1:50:23Bengals have to hold them right here and force another punter.
- 1:50:26Eleven seconds left in this third quarter.
- 1:50:29San Francisco leads it 20 to 7.
- 1:50:33And they're letting time run out.
- 1:50:34They are not going to run off another play and the two teams are heading down to change
- 1:50:38ends of the field.
- 1:50:39That is the end of the third quarter with a score of 49ers 20 and the Bengals 7.
- 1:50:45The Bengals bounce back well in that third quarter scoring their only touchdown and controlling
- 1:50:50the ball for about 12 minutes.
- 1:50:52San Francisco has had a lousy field position and the Bengals haven't let them off the hook.
- 1:50:58The 49ers have started their so-called drives at the 20 at the 15 and at the one yard line
- 1:51:03and now the Bengals are faced with another big third down situation with the ball inside
- 1:51:09the San Francisco 10.
- 1:51:11The Bengals have been down close three times.
- 1:51:14They have lost the ball twice and on a fourth down play on this last series why Pete Johnson
- 1:51:19was stopped short of the goal line and the 49ers took over.
- 1:51:22The 49ers have a third and three at their own eight yard line as we go into the final
- 1:51:2715 minutes of play.
- 1:51:2820 to 7 the 49ers on top of the Bengals of course have to stop them right here.
- 1:51:34Bengals with the three man line.
- 1:51:36They have Browner Whitley Edwards the regular linebackers with the exception of Jim LeClair
- 1:51:42who was out with that twisted knee.
- 1:51:44Rick Rosano has replaced him in the backfield to Earl Cooper and Ricky Patton for the 49ers.
- 1:51:52The wide split out to the left goes Patton.
- 1:51:54Montana hands off the ball and Cooper is going to be nailed back right up at the eight yard line.
- 1:52:01Montana fakes a swing and then gave the ball to Cooper and Cooper was wrapped up right at
- 1:52:06the eight yard line and the 49ers are going to have to punt.
- 1:52:08Ross Browner Wilson Whitley Cameron Rosano all of them in there as they plugged up that middle
- 1:52:14along with Eddie Edwards and the 49ers are going to have to punt for the third time.
- 1:52:18One two three kick the total offense figures for the third quarter are most revealing.
- 1:52:23The Bengals with 140 yards and the 49ers with only four.
- 1:52:30And after the first two series they had minus yardage.
- 1:52:32They've gotten on the plus side by picking up seven yards on this one.
- 1:52:37So again Miller will be putting back in his own end zone.
- 1:52:41He's standing about eight yards deep this time.
- 1:52:43Mike Fuller out of midfield the barefooter from Mississippi is punted well.
- 1:52:48This one is a short punt that comes over toward the sidelines.
- 1:52:51Fuller will take it on the bounce and Bengal territory.
- 1:52:54Now he's going to be knocked down at the 46 yard line.
- 1:52:56The 49ers downfield well to cover and a punt that looks as though it may go out of bounds
- 1:53:02but Fuller took it on the bounce.
- 1:53:03Randy Cross was down there to Nail Fuller and the Bengals will have the ball at their own 47 yard line.
- 1:53:10So Fuller gets nothing on that return and the Bengals now go to work with 13 minutes
- 1:53:14and 58 seconds left in the touch or in the game and the Bengals trail by 13 points.
- 1:53:27Curtis goes out to the right.
- 1:53:28Collinsworth here to the left.
- 1:53:29Right backs up.
- 1:53:30Lott comes right up to the line to Sriby.
- 1:53:33Now he backs off.
- 1:53:36Anderson gives the ball to Pete.
- 1:53:38Pete rips through up over midfield down to the 49ers 40 yard line.
- 1:53:42Kena Turner got him.
- 1:53:43Craig Puky pinned him down.
- 1:53:45It is going to be a game of maybe four yards.
- 1:53:47Well make it three as they will put the ball right down at midfield
- 1:53:50and it will become second down and seven.
- 1:53:53Pete Johnson now 14 carries 36 yards.
- 1:53:57The Bengals have had big fourth quarters this year both offensively and defensively.
- 1:54:03They've scored 136 points in the fourth quarter more than any other team
- 1:54:07but they have also given up 138.
- 1:54:11Second and seven at midfield.
- 1:54:15Back to throw goes Anderson.
- 1:54:16Look fires downfield.
- 1:54:18It's caught by Collinsworth in the middle of the field at the 49 or 40
- 1:54:21and he dives ahead to the 38 before Willie Harper could pin him down.
- 1:54:25The Bengals convert a second and seven on the path to Collinsworth right over the middle
- 1:54:29to the 49 or 38 yard line a 12 yard shot and that is another first down.
- 1:54:34Bengals are having good luck over the middle.
- 1:54:36Completions to Ross and to Collinsworth and to Crider right in the middle of that San Francisco defense.
- 1:54:42They haven't had that much luck with the exception of the long completion down the sidelines
- 1:54:46to Collinsworth attacking the flank of the San Francisco zone.
- 1:54:50Boy Fred Dean just got a hand on Anderson that time as Munoz shoved him away.
- 1:54:55Anderson again back to throw.
- 1:54:57Looking again down the middle.
- 1:54:59Ross at the 30 has it down at the 28.
- 1:55:01There we go right over the middle again.
- 1:55:03Dan Ross caught that one and he was pulled down by Bobby Leopold
- 1:55:07who's in as one of the extra linebackers here in this situation.
- 1:55:11That is a gain of about 10 yards and it may be close enough that they will bring in the
- 1:55:15change from the far side of the linebacker to the right side of the linebacker.
- 1:55:19From the far side of the field to measure. Let's see.
- 1:55:21And again Ross showed his talent at catching the ball that was thrown a little bit behind him.
- 1:55:26He had just so well to the football and he's such a sure receiver.
- 1:55:30And that football is marked extremely close to the first down but they're not going to measure it's about a half yard short.
- 1:55:35He spotted it down at the 28 and a half so it'll be second down and less than a yard to go for the first down.
- 1:55:43Two men out to the right one to the left.
- 1:55:45Anderson is back to throw.
- 1:55:47Down the middle it's incomplete almost intercepted by Ronnie Lott.
- 1:55:51A flag thrown in the play and let's see what we have.
- 1:55:55Right down the middle Curtis and Collinsworth.
- 1:55:57Collinsworth is clapping his hands and the 49ers are unhappy.
- 1:56:01Carlton Williamson I believe may be called for something down there.
- 1:56:05Let's get Pat Haggard his call.
- 1:56:07Pass interference number 42.
- 1:56:09Pass interference against Ronnie Lott who wiggled past the receiver.
- 1:56:13And the Bengals will have a first down down at the 15 yard line.
- 1:56:23Ken Anderson threw that ball into plenty of traffic.
- 1:56:27Williamson moved up in front of Isaac Curtis and brushed him as he tipped the ball.
- 1:56:31And they called the interference.
- 1:56:35Isaac Curtis the intended receiver and Ronnie Lott shoved him.
- 1:56:39Now Alexander goes out wide to the right outside of Curtis.
- 1:56:41Anderson back to throw the blitzes down.
- 1:56:43Now he's going to have to run throws it upfield incomplete.
- 1:56:47He threw in the grass with a couple of tacklers.
- 1:56:49There was no Bengals receiver really close to the ball.
- 1:56:53Max Montoya was the closest man and the 49er coaches are really unhappy.
- 1:56:59The blitz was on.
- 1:57:01One man had hold of Anderson's jersey but he threw the ball.
- 1:57:03And the closest man to it was Montoya who of course is an ineligible receiver.
- 1:57:07So it'll be second down and ten.
- 1:57:0949ers definitely wanted intentional grounding.
- 1:57:11Max Montoya was very slow in getting up there but he stays on the field.
- 1:57:15He's back in the huddle.
- 1:57:17Now Charlie Alexander comes out of the Bengals lineup.
- 1:57:19Well Max Montoya was slow getting up because he wanted to remain as inconspicuous as possible as a possible fast receiver.
- 1:57:26I like that theory.
- 1:57:28Now three wide receivers to the left as Crider goes over there.
- 1:57:31Now he sends Crider in motion to the right side.
- 1:57:34And Anderson again goes back to throw.
- 1:57:36It's a four man rush.
- 1:57:37Fires it down. Ross at the five yard line pulls it in.
- 1:57:41Carlton Williamson down there with Dan Ross who curled back and grabbed the ball at the five.
- 1:57:46And it's just about the ten yards that they needed for the first down depending on where they spot the ball.
- 1:57:51And again it is going to be a matter of just inches short.
- 1:57:55Just outside the five yard line it will be second down and won.
- 1:57:58A fine move by Ross curling away from Williamson.
- 1:58:01And now the 49ers send in a flock of new people on defense.
- 1:58:05Seven catches for the Bengals tight end Dan Ross 74 yards.
- 1:58:12Well the Bengals were down knocking at the goal on the last series only to be stopped.
- 1:58:20Third down and a yard to go.
- 1:58:21A hand off. Alexander dives into the right side.
- 1:58:24Gets maybe a yard but it could be enough for the first down.
- 1:58:27White Hicks really messed up the interference on that side.
- 1:58:30But I think that Alexander got the first down inside the five.
- 1:58:33We'll have to wait and see and they all unstack.
- 1:58:37Ken Anderson 10 out of 12 in the second half for 141 yards.
- 1:58:42The ball is just inside the five yard line close enough that they're going to bring in the change to measure.
- 1:58:47Ken 35 is the time remaining in the football game.
- 1:58:50If the Bengals don't make it it will be fourth down.
- 1:58:58It is the first down.
- 1:59:01Just inside the five it will be first and goal.
- 1:59:04And you don't have to be any student of the game of football to know that the Bengals have to score right here.
- 1:59:10They trailed 20 to 7 with only 10 and a half minutes left to play.
- 1:59:14We've been in this position before and the 49ers put up a tremendous goal line stand the last time.
- 1:59:20The Bengals went with their trump card and Pete Johnson in close and they didn't have too much luck.
- 1:59:26Let's see if they change up now offensively.
- 1:59:28They'll only go with one back this time and the three wide receivers.
- 1:59:32Crider goes to the left with Curtis and Collinsworth.
- 1:59:36Now Crider will go in motion to the right side of the field.
- 1:59:39Anderson will go back to throw.
- 1:59:40Look, fires into the end zone, touchdown to Dan Ross.
- 1:59:44Dan Ross right down to it again maneuvered away from Wooderson.
- 1:59:48And the teammates of his mob have been down in the end zone.
- 1:59:51And now the Bengals are right back in his football game.
- 1:59:54And an extra point here of course will put the Bengals within six.
- 1:59:58That is eight catches for Dan Ross in this football game.
- 2:00:01Five of them have come here in the second half.
- 2:00:04And time and time again Anderson has attacked Carlton Williamson, the rookie out of pit.
- 2:00:09And he does it again here for the touchdown.
- 2:00:12So Danny Ross gets the touchdown and the Bengals tap that end zone once again.
- 2:00:16It is now a 20 to 13 ball game.
- 2:00:18The 49ers have been held completely at bay.
- 2:00:22A big extra point attempt right now by Jim Breach.
- 2:00:25Crider will put it down.
- 2:00:26Breach will attempt it.
- 2:00:28Lines are down and we're waiting for the snap.
- 2:00:30It's high but Breach's kick is through.
- 2:00:32So there's time out on the field with a score now.
- 2:00:35The 49ers 20 and the Bengals 14.
- 2:00:39They score their second straight touchdown.
- 2:00:42And Cincinnati trails by six at 20 to 14.
- 2:00:46So Jim Breach will kick off.
- 2:00:47Again Bill Ring and Dwight Hicks are the deep end for the 49ers.
- 2:00:5110-06 is the time remaining.
- 2:00:53A lot of time.
- 2:00:55The 49ers do not have a first down.
- 2:00:57They have a grand total of only about four yards of offense here in this second half.
- 2:01:03And they've run off only 12 plays and three of those have been punched by Jim Miller.
- 2:01:12We're having a little delay right here.
- 2:01:14The Bengals hand, he did not score down there when Pete Johnson was stopped
- 2:01:17at the ensuing field position after the punt down there set things up.
- 2:01:22So finally persisting keeping the 49ers in bad field position.
- 2:01:26And they finally get it in on a five yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Ross.
- 2:01:30So Breach will hammer it.
- 2:01:32He kicks it down a good high booth.
- 2:01:34It'll be taken by Hicks at the four.
- 2:01:36Comes up to the five to the ten to the 15.
- 2:01:39Tens away at the 20 and is going to be knocked down at the 26 yard line.
- 2:01:43Went down on the grasp of Rick Brazano on a pretty good hit by Ray Griffin in there.
- 2:01:46Also to help bring him down.
- 2:01:48So the 49ers will take over at their own 27 yard line.
- 2:01:52San Francisco getting a bit conservative.
- 2:01:54They went with Dwight Hicks as a deep back along with Ring and did not use famous Amos Lawrence.
- 2:02:00He was back there. They used 3D.
- 2:02:05Yeah, he fumbled that opening kickoff for sure.
- 2:02:08And Dwight Hicks, who is much more sure handed, took that one out across the 25.
- 2:02:12So the 49ers started their own 27.
- 2:02:16They have Solomon and his mark as the wide receivers.
- 2:02:18They send Patton in motion.
- 2:02:19Montana back to throw.
- 2:02:21Out in the flat, it's incomplete.
- 2:02:23It's handed out there for Ricky Patton taking a shallow drift.
- 2:02:27And Reggie Williams grabs his old former high school teammate and threw him down.
- 2:02:31But the pass was whistled by his ear by that time.
- 2:02:34So now the 49ers, 27 have become second and 10.
- 2:02:37This is San Francisco's best field position of the second half.
- 2:02:41They've started drives on the 2015 and one yard line.
- 2:02:44And this one begins on the 27th.
- 2:02:48Bengals down 20 to nothing at the half.
- 2:02:51They come back for two touchdowns and braille 20 to 14.
- 2:02:54They get a passing formation with a wide split and a whistle of Bengals charge across.
- 2:02:58And they want an illegal procedure call against somebody on the left side of that line.
- 2:03:05Ball starts.
- 2:03:0661.
- 2:03:07It was.
- 2:03:08Dan Audick, the left tackle, moved and that will cost them five yards.
- 2:03:12And you have to wonder if the 49ers aren't beginning to come apart a little bit here, Andy.
- 2:03:17It'll be second down now and 15 with a five yard walk off.
- 2:03:21It's been Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde routine.
- 2:03:2349ers have made the mistake taking the dumb penalties and not been able to convert on third downs here in the second half.
- 2:03:30And that's something they did not do in the first half.
- 2:03:32No penalties.
- 2:03:33And they were almost perfect in third down conversion.
- 2:03:36Solomon goes out, Mike Wilson comes in, he comes out to the right.
- 2:03:40Backs with that wide split behind Montana, second and 15 at the 22.
- 2:03:44Patton comes in motion to the near side.
- 2:03:46Montana goes back to throw, rolls out to the right, looks upfield, throws and is caught and out of bounds at the 45 yard line.
- 2:03:54Caught by Mike Wilson up at the 44.
- 2:03:57And a couple of the Bengals really hop along the sideline.
- 2:03:59He calls the ball right in front of the Bengals' fence.
- 2:04:01There's that Montana roll out and the play is good for about 22 yards and that will be a 49er first down.
- 2:04:09They're only gainer of any consequence thus far in that second half.
- 2:04:13And Montana got it with a roll out play to the right.
- 2:04:15Freddie Solomon checks back into the lineup.
- 2:04:17Mike Wilson who was in for him on that series and caught the big gainer on the second and long.
- 2:04:26Montana rolling out to give himself a little more time to throw.
- 2:04:30Solomon is at the right.
- 2:04:32Clark is lined up tight at the left.
- 2:04:34Montana again is back to throw.
- 2:04:36Looks, fires it upfield.
- 2:04:38It's incomplete at the 48 yard line.
- 2:04:40A flag is thrown from behind and we may get interference against Rosano on Clark.
- 2:04:46Bengals had the safety blitz.
- 2:04:48Bobby Kemp came from the left side and got to the quarterback Montana just as he let the ball go.
- 2:04:54Rosano playing in place of the injured Jim LeClair and he climbed up the back that time.
- 2:04:59The pass interference was called on Riley not Rosano.
- 2:05:05And it will be enough to give them an automatic first down on the five yard penalty out to the 49 yard line.
- 2:05:12Kenny Riley was the man who was called for the pass interference not Rosano.
- 2:05:17We have nine minutes and 40 seconds to play in regulation.
- 2:05:20The Bengals trail the 49ers by a 20 to 14 score.
- 2:05:24Eddie Edwards was right in on top of Montana that time.
- 2:05:27But it's first and 10 now the 49ers at their own 49.
- 2:05:31Clark Wright, Solomon comes in motion over to that side.
- 2:05:34Montana hands the ball up up the middle.
- 2:05:36A big run by Ricky Patton down to the 41 yard line.
- 2:05:39And the last guy, Brian Hicks got him.
- 2:05:42Big blocking in the middle by Quillen, Randy Cross and John Ayers.
- 2:05:46And if not Hicks made that tackle around the ankles of Patton he might have been off to the races.
- 2:05:53Brian Hicks had Patton one on one held his ground and then dove for the feet to bring him down.
- 2:05:58The 10 yard pick up and it may be enough for a first down.
- 2:06:01The chains are coming in.
- 2:06:04So the 49ers moving the ball now for the first time in the second half.
- 2:06:08And the Bengals training by six don't want them to get a field goal.
- 2:06:11It is enough for a first down at the Bengals 41 yard line.
- 2:06:17The Bengals middle linebackers have been moved around pretty well this entire ball game.
- 2:06:21The 49ers have had some good gains up the middle.
- 2:06:28So the 49ers will send Solomon and Clark to the left.
- 2:06:32Patton and Cooper are the running backs.
- 2:06:34They're at the Bengals 41 to hand off.
- 2:06:36It's Patton this time and he has hit at the 39 yard line.
- 2:06:39Really hit solidly and wrapped up.
- 2:06:41And the guy who nailed him was Ross Browner.
- 2:06:44Browner came shot across from the right end spot.
- 2:06:47It's amazing how many times Browner can come from the right side to make a tackle right at the line of scrimmage on the left side.
- 2:06:54But Patton's momentum on the angle carried him forward for a couple of yards.
- 2:06:58And at the 39 it is second and eight.
- 2:07:00Browner's had a big game against the run.
- 2:07:02He's also turned in a quarterback back.
- 2:07:04So Ross Browner has enjoyed himself an excellent Super Bowl so far.
- 2:07:09They line Clark tight left. Solomon tight right.
- 2:07:13Montana hands the ball off.
- 2:07:14It's half running to the left.
- 2:07:15He's going to get all the way down to the 33 yard line.
- 2:07:18And to his right the Bengals left.
- 2:07:20And finally it was Browner from the other side of the field along with Hicks and Cameron who got over there to make the tackle.
- 2:07:25And he picked up just about the eight yards that he needed for the first down.
- 2:07:29So Ricky Patton running well.
- 2:07:31And again we may have to bring in the chains to measure.
- 2:07:3720 to 14 the 49ers lead it after they had a 20 to nothing halftime lead.
- 2:07:43And that one is going to be less than an inch short.
- 2:07:46At the Bengals 31 yard line it will be third down and just an inch maybe two inches to go.
- 2:07:53Again San Francisco reestablishing their running game.
- 2:07:57Their running game had taken a vacation in the third quarter.
- 2:08:0149ers couldn't get themselves in decent field position.
- 2:08:05The Bengals held them without a first down but San Francisco has moved the ball from their own 27 down to the Bengals 31.
- 2:08:12So the third down and just inches to go.
- 2:08:15Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Montana keep the ball.
- 2:08:20That is Montana and he dives with it in over the right guard inside the 30 to maybe the 29 and has the first down.
- 2:08:26Followed the blocks of Fred Quillen in the center.
- 2:08:29Randy Cross the white guard.
- 2:08:31And at the 29 yard line the 49ers have a first down.
- 2:08:35In fact where they put the ball down it is actually the 28 yard line.
- 2:08:39So it will be first and 10 right there.
- 2:08:41The Bengals trailing by six.
- 2:08:43Just cannot afford to give up a field goal even with seven minutes and 45 seconds left in the game.
- 2:08:4849ers are keeping the clock running keeping the ball in bounds and on the ground.
- 2:08:5449ers ready to go.
- 2:08:56At the Bengals 28.
- 2:08:57Solomon will go in motion over to the left side.
- 2:09:00Montana will hand the ball off.
- 2:09:01Cooper running to the left.
- 2:09:02Riley knocks him down with a good tackle at about the 26.
- 2:09:08They sent the flow to the right.
- 2:09:10They took the handoff to the left.
- 2:09:12Burst through it.
- 2:09:13Pohl on the left side and Kenny Riley hit him around the ankles and dropped him after a gain of a yard.
- 2:09:18When it appeared that he might have some pretty good area to run in.
- 2:09:22Good open field tackle by Riley.
- 2:09:24It will be second down and nine.
- 2:09:26Down to seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
- 2:09:32Not only a touchdown the Bengals have to keep him out of field goal range.
- 2:09:35Nine points would be probably too much.
- 2:09:38Handoff into the line.
- 2:09:40And he's pulled down by Reggie Williams as he crosses the 25 and gets maybe to the 24 yard line.
- 2:09:46Wilson Woodley on the nose.
- 2:09:48Stop also.
- 2:09:49And now it will bring up a third down and six.
- 2:09:52And it has been on these type of situations that Montana has really gone to the rollout.
- 2:09:57Montana of course was the NFC passing champion.
- 2:10:00Kenny Anderson topped the AFC and the entire NFL.
- 2:10:03So we have the two top quarterbacks in football matched up against each other in this game today.
- 2:10:08And both have had good days.
- 2:10:10Ethan Ransom comes out of the ballgame.
- 2:10:12Dwight Clark is in and he's the man that Montana likes to go to in these situations.
- 2:10:1724 yard line of the Bengals third and sixth.
- 2:10:20Montana hands off into the line.
- 2:10:22Patten gets nothing.
- 2:10:23Ross Garner and about three or four others in the middle wrap him up.
- 2:10:26And that should bring in Wersing for a field goal attempt.
- 2:10:30A lot of scrimmage will be about the 23.
- 2:10:32It will be a 40 yard attempt by Wersing.
- 2:10:34And he was kicking them as far as 55 and 56 yards before this ballgame started.
- 2:10:40Wersing coming into the game, as I mentioned, did not miss inside the 30.
- 2:10:45At this range between 40 and 49 he is four out of seven.
- 2:10:50And with only five minutes and 35 seconds left, this 40 yard field goal attempt is really a big one.
- 2:10:58If it is to be an attempt.
- 2:11:00Snap back. Wersing's kick is lined up and it is good.
- 2:11:04There's time out on the field with a score of the 49ers 23 and the Bengals 14.
- 2:11:11The 49ers now have a nine point lead at 23 to 14 with five minutes and 25 seconds to go.
- 2:11:17Boy does that field goal he got right at the end of the half after Archie Griffin fumbled a kickoff.
- 2:11:23Really looked big.
- 2:11:24Here's Wersing again. He kicks the number.
- 2:11:26Bounces at the 30.
- 2:11:27At the 15.
- 2:11:28Goes over Verso's head. He finally gets it at the 15.
- 2:11:31Running laterally at the 20.
- 2:11:33Gets to the 21 yard line and goes down.
- 2:11:35And it's a little difficult to see why some of those Bengals men in the wedge who have an opportunity to pick up the ball do not.
- 2:11:41Amos Lawrence got down there and Verso got a lucky bounce after the ball bounced over his head.
- 2:11:47And he got it back to the 22 yard line.
- 2:11:49And Wersing has just kicked those numbers all afternoon long.
- 2:11:53He has only put one kickoff into the air.
- 2:11:56Now the Bengals get the ball back with five minutes and 14 seconds left in the game.
- 2:12:01They trail by nine at 23-14.
- 2:12:04The Bengals will go the three wide receivers.
- 2:12:08Curtis and Crider go to the right. Collinsworth to the left.
- 2:12:10They have Tina Turner with a backup.
- 2:12:12On Collinsworth.
- 2:12:14Anderson goes back to throw. It's a three man rush.
- 2:12:16He looks.
- 2:12:17Fires downfield.
- 2:12:18It's intercepted.
- 2:12:19It's at the 50.
- 2:12:20Down to the 40.
- 2:12:21The 30.
- 2:12:22Down to the 25.
- 2:12:23And the 21 yard line still on his feet.
- 2:12:25The ball is lost and a big scramble up the 21 yard line.
- 2:12:29It was Eric Wright who picked off that pass intended for Collinsworth.
- 2:12:34And the 49ers have recovered a ball just short of the Bengals 21 yard line.
- 2:12:40That might be it right there.
- 2:12:43I think it's Willie Harper who was the guy who got on the ball.
- 2:12:46Eric Wright intercepted that pass out near the 45 yard line.
- 2:12:49The pass was intended for Collinsworth.
- 2:12:52It came up short and Wright stepped in front and came up with a football.
- 2:12:59So the 49ers will have the ball at the Bengals 22 yard line.
- 2:13:03It will be first and tenth.
- 2:13:05Wright ran it down the sidelines, fumbled the ball and Willie Harper recovered.
- 2:13:08They have it at the 22.
- 2:13:12So that is four turnovers now for the Bengals.
- 2:13:15There's time out on the field.
- 2:13:1981,270 the official attendance here at the Silver Dome.
- 2:13:24And a big, big play by Eric Wright.
- 2:13:27That ball kind of sailed on Anderson.
- 2:13:29He intercepted it and unfortunately from San Francisco's standpoint,
- 2:13:32unfortunately from the Bengals standpoint, they got the football.
- 2:13:37Now they can run down the clock and with a nine point lead that may have been it right there.
- 2:13:41Solomon will go in motion to the left side.
- 2:13:44Hand off Ricky Patton tries the right side, bursts inside the 20, gets to about the 17 before Rosano
- 2:13:50and Bobby Kemp along with Cameron can bang him down.
- 2:13:54But he gained about four on the play on that shot into the right side and it will be second down and six.
- 2:13:59The ball right at the Bengals 18 yard line.
- 2:14:02Wright ran that ball back from the 45 down to about the 22.
- 2:14:06The fumble ensued when he tried to lateral the ball.
- 2:14:10But the 49ers got it back.
- 2:14:12Now it becomes second down and six at the Bengals 18.
- 2:14:16The clock is running at four minutes, 22 seconds is all that remains.
- 2:14:2249ers with a seemingly safe nine point lead.
- 2:14:27Big pitch into the line bursting down to the 15 yard line goes Earl Cooper diving in over the right side.
- 2:14:35Cameron and a couple of others pinned him down right there.
- 2:14:38Ross Browner also went in the stop.
- 2:14:39He got as far as the 15, a gain of three and now it will become third down and three.
- 2:14:44And the 49ers seemingly are content to run the ball, just keep it in field goal position for Wershing.
- 2:14:52The Bengals right now of course need a touchdown and a field goal.
- 2:14:55If they get another field goal it means that the Bengals would need two touchdowns with only 340 left to go.
- 2:15:00That is not very likely.
- 2:15:03The nose of the ball right at the 15, it is third and three.
- 2:15:06Johnny Davis and Patner the running backs.
- 2:15:09Handoff into the line, plunging all the way down to the 10 yard line before being shoved back with Davis.
- 2:15:14The big 235 pounder from Alabama and he may have the first down.
- 2:15:18I believe he does, yes he does.
- 2:15:21Ryan ends up in the safety spot.
- 2:15:23He just slammed his way right up the middle that time.
- 2:15:26And he got the ball all the way down to the 10 yard line, just five yards on that power play.
- 2:15:31And it is a first down for the 49ers just outside their 10 yard line.
- 2:15:36Now Mike Wilson checks in for Fred Solomon.
- 2:15:44The 49ers taking a lot of time, the clock running is down to 252.
- 2:15:48They have 10 seconds to get off the play as they break the huddle.
- 2:15:52And at 231 I believe the Bengals called a timeout here to stop the clock.
- 2:15:56And if they did the Bengals will have just one timeout left.
- 2:15:59Yes they have stopped it.
- 2:16:01There's timeout on the field.
- 2:16:06The 49ers by virtue of Eric Wright's interception have the ball right back deep in Bengals territory.
- 2:16:12And after the two yard game have a second down and about seven and a half just inside the eight yard line.
- 2:16:19Patton and Cooper in the backfield.
- 2:16:21Now handoff is Ricky Patton running wide to the right.
- 2:16:23Lozano pens him in and he falls down at the 13 yard line.
- 2:16:26Loose is about five on that sweep to the right.
- 2:16:28Whitley and Hicks got right over there to cover.
- 2:16:30And now the Bengals call their last timeout.
- 2:16:35They will not have any left.
- 2:16:37Two minutes and 20 seconds is all the time that is left in this football game.
- 2:16:41And the 49ers will have a third down now and about 13 yards to go back at their own 13 yard line.
- 2:16:48Now remember the reception down at Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:16:53It'll be at approximately one o'clock.
- 2:16:55The Bengals' plane is scheduled to leave Metro Airport in Detroit at 11.
- 2:17:00It means they should get back at about 10 to 12.
- 2:17:02It'll take a while to unload all the bags, get everybody assembled and get down to Fountain Square.
- 2:17:08Rain crust to the 49ers led by Bill Walch on the far sideline talking with Joe Montana.
- 2:17:15The Bengals defensive man Rick Lozano, Tom Dink.
- 2:17:18Talking with Hank Bulla down at the sideline.
- 2:17:20The Bengals now no longer can stop the clock.
- 2:17:23They have used their last timeout.
- 2:17:26The Bengals came roaring back from a 20 to nothing half time deficit.
- 2:17:30Scored after taking the opening kickoff in the third quarter.
- 2:17:33Got down close once again when Pete Johnson was stopped fourth and inches.
- 2:17:37But then came back to score on the Anderson five yard pass to Dan Ross.
- 2:17:40But then the 49ers moved the ball for the first time in the second half.
- 2:17:44Wershing kicked a 40 yard field goal.
- 2:17:47And that gave them a seemingly impossible deficit for the Bengals to make up a 23 to 14.
- 2:17:57The 49ers came into this game as a one point favorite.
- 2:18:00I think I mentioned 81,270.
- 2:18:03The official attendance here at the Silverdome, the first Super Bowl ever played in the North.
- 2:18:11Had his third down at about 13 for the 49ers back at their own 13 yard line.
- 2:18:17Montana on play action back to throw.
- 2:18:19Riley chases him.
- 2:18:20Can't get him.
- 2:18:21Montana running at the 15 at the 10.
- 2:18:23Spins away and gets to about the six yard line.
- 2:18:26Reggie Williams overran him.
- 2:18:28And then Ryan Hex came over to make the tackle at the six.
- 2:18:32So it is far short of what they need for a first down.
- 2:18:36They have to get it down to the one yard line.
- 2:18:38And let's see if they're going to go or what they're going to do as we hit the two minute warning.
- 2:18:42There's a timeout on the field with a score.
- 2:18:45The 49ers 23 and the Bengals 14.
- 2:18:49Lost in the shuffle of this ball game will be the fact that Kenny Anderson has completed 19 passes,
- 2:18:54which is the new Super Bowl record for completion.
- 2:18:58Hard to believe that nobody has ever completed as many as 20 passes in 15 Super Bowl games.
- 2:19:04Wershing with a 23 yard field goal attempt.
- 2:19:06Joe Montana will hold the ball a snap back.
- 2:19:09Wershing's kick is up and through the upright.
- 2:19:12And now the 49ers have a 12 point lead at 26 to 14.
- 2:19:17Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 2:19:23Wershing has been script kicking those kickoffs all day long.
- 2:19:26And the Bengals have really had difficulty finding a handle on the ball.
- 2:19:35About the farthest they have returned to kickoff all afternoon is the 17 yard line.
- 2:19:39And Archie Griffin fumbled that one, reaching around vainly for it near the end of the first half
- 2:19:44after they had scored a field goal.
- 2:19:46And they quickly got another field goal with just five seconds left in the half.
- 2:19:51So the Bengals have O'Bradyk and Blake Moore at the 20.
- 2:19:54Archie Griffin looking things over backing up now to the 10.
- 2:19:57And Wersher is standing back at about the three.
- 2:20:00So here is Wershing's kick again.
- 2:20:01He will nub it along.
- 2:20:02It bounces at the 20, a big bounce, and Wersher takes it at the 10.
- 2:20:05Up to the 20, he will get to about the 25, 26 yard line and goes down on the far side of the field.
- 2:20:13Three or four 49ers led by Dwight Hicks were over there to haul them down.
- 2:20:17The Bengals do not have any timeouts remaining.
- 2:20:20They trail by 12 points with a minute and 51 seconds left.
- 2:20:24They will have the ball at their own 26.
- 2:20:27Anderson 19 out of 28 for 229 yards, 14 out of 22 for Montana and 157.
- 2:20:40Two wide receivers to the left, one to the right.
- 2:20:43Four man defensive line, Fred Dean on the outside.
- 2:20:45Anderson back to throw, has a lot of time looking.
- 2:20:48Now he's going to run over the far side, throws downfield, is caught by Curtis,
- 2:20:52and he's dropped at the Bengals 47 yard line by Williamson.
- 2:20:56The Bengals will go without virtue of a huddle.
- 2:21:00A 21 yard pass reception by Isaac Curtis, it's first and 10, the Bengals at their own 47.
- 2:21:06No timeouts left.
- 2:21:08Again, that four man rush, Anderson back to throw, downfield, is caught by Ross at the 40.
- 2:21:12He'll get down to the 38 yard line in Frisco territory.
- 2:21:16San Francisco knows that time is all in their favor, a minute and 14 seconds left.
- 2:21:22The Bengals line up again without a huddle.
- 2:21:25They have three plays in this sequence.
- 2:21:27Anderson may have to throw this one away.
- 2:21:29Fires the down, is caught by Ross at the 30.
- 2:21:31Spins and is dropped at the 29 yard line.
- 2:21:34One minute left to play.
- 2:21:36Anderson's passing to Dan Ross, complete.
- 2:21:38Dan Ross has caught nine passes, I believe.
- 2:21:41Now that is 10.
- 2:21:44New Super Bowl record, Anderson back to throw.
- 2:21:47Looking, fires it upfield at the 20 yard line.
- 2:21:50Crider knocked down immediately after catching the ball by Bobby Leopold, knows Collinsworth.
- 2:21:56And now the officials have called the timeout.
- 2:21:59It'll stop the clock with 40 seconds left.
- 2:22:01Collinsworth on that reception, knocked down by Leopold.
- 2:22:08It is a penalty against the 49ers encroachment.
- 2:22:10Somebody lined up offside in that neutral zone.
- 2:22:13That is the reason that the clock has stopped.
- 2:22:16The game on the pass plate to Collinsworth carried down to the 20 yard line and the Bengals will take it right there.
- 2:22:24It's declined and the Bengals are ready to go.
- 2:22:28First and 10 at the 20.
- 2:22:3140 seconds is all that remains.
- 2:22:34Anderson is back to throw.
- 2:22:36Looking, fires down to the three yard line, is caught down at the three yard line by Crider.
- 2:22:41With 30 seconds left, the Bengals will hustle on down.
- 2:22:44Bobby Leopold is there to cover him.
- 2:22:46It is first and goal at the 49ers three.
- 2:22:50Clock running, 22 seconds left.
- 2:22:52Anderson again, back to throw.
- 2:22:54Look, fires into the end zone, touchdown to Dan Ross.
- 2:22:57With just 16 seconds left to go, Ross again on that same play perhaps,
- 2:23:03curled away from Carlton Williamson in the middle.
- 2:23:06And with 16 seconds left, Ross gets his second touchdown pass.
- 2:23:09With the game, his 11th pass reception, a new Super Bowl record.
- 2:23:14It is now a 26 to 20 ball game.
- 2:23:17And the Bengals just went 74 yards in a big hurry.
- 2:23:20Anderson to Ross for the final three.
- 2:23:23They did it with no timeouts left.
- 2:23:27Attempting the point after the 10 at the O'Bridge.
- 2:23:31No, Crider will hold. O'Bridge will attempt the extra point.
- 2:23:37Lines are down, waiting for the snap.
- 2:23:39It's high, O'Bridge's kick is up, and it is good.
- 2:23:42So it is a 26 to 21 football game.
- 2:23:46And the Bengals' only chance of course is to recover an onside kick.
- 2:23:49And they might have about three plays left,
- 2:23:51but they could not throw the ball down the middle of the field
- 2:23:53unless they threw it all the way into the end zone,
- 2:23:55because they cannot stop the clock.
- 2:23:58They went 74 yards that time in very, very short order.
- 2:24:04Anderson to Ross.
- 2:24:05And what an afternoon Danny Ross has had.
- 2:24:08Eleven receptions, two touchdowns.
- 2:24:11But the 49ers have a five-point lead,
- 2:24:13and the Bengals of course will have to try an onside kick.
- 2:24:17The 49ers know it, and they'll have their hands team out in the field.
- 2:24:19Lott is out there.
- 2:24:21Hicks.
- 2:24:23Probably Eric Wright.
- 2:24:25And Super Bowl XVI is just 16 seconds away from being complete.
- 2:24:30If the 49ers recover this kick, it is all over.
- 2:24:33It is just a matter then of these final seconds ticking away.
- 2:24:37The Bengals with a valiant second half comeback,
- 2:24:39but they could not overcome that 20 to nothing half-time lead.
- 2:24:48All the guys with the good hands, Clark, Lott, Wright, Hicks, Leopold, Mike Wilson,
- 2:24:56are all up at the 45 to 50-yard line of Bengal territory
- 2:25:01as Jim Breach gets set to kick it off.
- 2:25:05The Bengals need a touchdown.
- 2:25:07A field goal would not do it.
- 2:25:08Of course they trail by five.
- 2:25:10Now they'll kick it over to the left as the Bengals shift that way.
- 2:25:13There's the bouncing kick, and the 49ers have it at the Bengals' 48-yard line.
- 2:25:18And that will take care of it right there.
- 2:25:20The 49ers got the ball.
- 2:25:21Dwight Clark.
- 2:25:23Oh, it was Mike Wilson.
- 2:25:26One of those two.
- 2:25:28The man recovered the ball.
- 2:25:29I believe it was Dwight Clark, who is being assisted to his feet by his teammates.
- 2:25:34Clark was the guy who recovered the ball,
- 2:25:37and that will give the 49ers Super Bowl number 16.
- 2:25:44All the photographers already out along the sidelines
- 2:25:47crowded out in front of Coach Bill Walch on the far sideline.
- 2:25:50The 49ers can flop the ball just one time, and this football game will be over.
- 2:25:57So near and yet so far.
- 2:26:02It's been a disappointing afternoon, but it was the first half that really did the Bengals in.
- 2:26:06The Bengals have turned the ball over four times.
- 2:26:08The 49ers will flop it once, and that will be the end of the game.
- 2:26:12Montana takes it, goes down onto the field, and the final ten seconds will tick off.
- 2:26:16And the 49ers have won the Super Bowl by a score of 26-21.
- 2:26:22The photographer's out on the field.
- 2:26:24There it is, and the 49ers are Super Bowl champions,
- 2:26:2726-21 over the Cincinnati Bengals.
