- 0:56Speaker 4: weeks in.
- 0:57Speaker 5: It was all a dream? Is this?
- 1:00Speaker 3: This is crazy? This is crazy.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Now we want to thank you guys for rocking with us,
- 1:05Speaker 4: for supporting us. You know, it's it's been a tremendous journey.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Hell of arrived, man, and it just started. That's the
- 1:12Speaker 4: best part. So I'm gonna jump right into We got
- 1:14Speaker 4: an extremely special guest today once again, somebody that so
- 1:19Speaker 4: we if you listen to the podcast, you know we
- 1:21Speaker 4: interviewed Al Harrington.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Al Harrington was somebody that we wrote a post about
- 1:28Speaker 4: and then from that post, he you know, engaged with
- 1:32Speaker 4: us and then we we we reached out to him
- 1:34Speaker 4: and we went to l A and we actually had
- 1:36Speaker 4: a conversation with him right on the podcast. So once
- 1:39Speaker 4: again similar situation.
- 1:41Speaker 5: Right, you want to get the backstart the power.
- 1:44Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44Speaker 7: Yeah, So this is this is the you know, uh,
- 1:47Speaker 7: standard procedure for us is like, I'll read articles at
- 1:50Speaker 7: five thirty in the morning. I think we spoke about
- 1:52Speaker 7: that on when we were with Q and I'll go
- 1:54Speaker 7: through articles and I'll find, you know, things that are
- 1:56Speaker 7: very interesting and i think would relate on our page.
- 1:59Speaker 7: And I came across this article about Brandon Copeland and
- 2:02Speaker 7: I'm like, wait, wow, this guy's amazing.
- 2:05Speaker 5: And literally as I'm reading it, there's a special on
- 2:08Speaker 5: Sports Center.
- 2:09Speaker 7: And I'm like, oh, no, no, no, this guy is
- 2:12Speaker 7: on the same path as us. We have to meet
- 2:13Speaker 7: this guy. We have to talk to this guy. And
- 2:16Speaker 7: said it to you like five thirty in the morning.
- 2:17Speaker 7: I know you're sleeping, but I'm like, he has to
- 2:19Speaker 7: see this. And as soon as you woke up, you
- 2:21Speaker 7: put the post up and the traction was crazy.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it was one of our biggest posts.
- 2:25Speaker 4: So Brandon Coplan, if you're not familiar, he plays for
- 2:28Speaker 4: the Jets.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But that's the only part of his story. He is
- 2:32Speaker 3: a U.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Penn graduate, if anybody's not familiar, Upinn has one of
- 2:36Speaker 4: the best business business schools in the world, the Wharton
- 2:39Speaker 4: School of Business. So that's you know, separates him from
- 2:43Speaker 4: a lot of NFL players. But also he works on
- 2:46Speaker 4: Wall Street during the off season. He has a real
- 2:49Speaker 4: estate investment company, and he actually is a college professor
- 2:53Speaker 4: at Warton. So when I was reading his story, I'm like,
- 2:57Speaker 4: this is crazy, Like you know what I mean, Like
- 2:59Speaker 4: we highlight bad things with you know, people make mistakes
- 3:03Speaker 4: in any realm, but it seems like athletes always get
- 3:05Speaker 4: highlighted the most, right anytime that this is domestic violence,
- 3:07Speaker 4: anything like that happens. So it's like we need to
- 3:09Speaker 4: highlight this like this this is just a dope story.
- 3:12Speaker 4: So I put the story out and once again I
- 3:16Speaker 4: put in this story, I'm like, y'all would love to
- 3:17Speaker 4: connect with you, and he.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Was like, yeah, let's connect. So I was like what.
- 3:23Speaker 4: So I shot with DM and we worked it out
- 3:26Speaker 4: via you know, emails, and now we hate on our podcast. So,
- 3:30Speaker 4: like you said, power social media, social media. So first
- 3:34Speaker 4: of almost thank you, thank.
- 3:35Speaker 6: You pleasure to be here, pleasure to be with y'all.
- 3:38Speaker 6: I love what y'all are doing.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Man, We're gonna jump right into it.
- 3:42Speaker 4: So all right, So the theme of our show is
- 3:45Speaker 4: the backstory the financial side of sports entertainment business as well.
- 3:49Speaker 4: But we we really focus on sports entertainment a lot
- 3:51Speaker 4: because we feel like, especially in our culture, people don't
- 3:54Speaker 4: fully understand what goes on behind the scenes, right, Like
- 3:57Speaker 4: everybody wants to be in the NBA, NFL or sell
- 4:00Speaker 4: a million records, but they don't understand that these are businesses, right,
- 4:05Speaker 4: It's sports business, the music business, the entertainment business.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:08Speaker 5: That part gets left off the title.
- 4:10Speaker 3: It always does. It always does, it always does.
- 4:12Speaker 4: So you have a very interesting story, and we was
- 4:17Speaker 4: reading it, you know, the last couple of days. So
- 4:20Speaker 4: you said your first contract, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You made your contract with from one point two million. Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 4: I was good, But now you have like thirty five
- 4:28Speaker 4: forty thousand. Yeah, So yeah, can we just kind of
- 4:31Speaker 4: break that down because to me, it's interesting as far
- 4:33Speaker 4: as like NFL players, because you have an off season,
- 4:36Speaker 4: so a lot of people don't aren't familiar, like do
- 4:38Speaker 4: you get paid on the off season or how frequent
- 4:40Speaker 4: do you get paid. And then there's a thing called
- 4:42Speaker 4: the jock tax when you go to different states and
- 4:44Speaker 4: you get taxed differently. It's not all so yeah, can
- 4:49Speaker 4: you kind of just break that down?
- 4:50Speaker 6: Yeah, man, there's layers to that, layers. So yeah, So
- 4:54Speaker 6: the way I think of the NFL is nothing is
- 4:59Speaker 6: guarantee he unless you have certain stipulations within your contract
- 5:04Speaker 6: and all that type of stuff.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Right, So if you're one of those players, which is you.
- 5:08Speaker 6: Know, more players are seeing that, that's a great thing
- 5:11Speaker 6: and a blessing to have. But when you see these
- 5:13Speaker 6: big contracts, you know, Russell Wilson one hundred and forty million,
- 5:17Speaker 6: I can't remember how much guaranteed, maybe sixty five or
- 5:20Speaker 6: something sixty quaranteed, right, that's what he can bank on, right,
- 5:26Speaker 6: you see the big number. But if Russell Wilson gets
- 5:30Speaker 6: hurt in year four, year five, whatever, right, he's not
- 5:33Speaker 6: seeing the rest of that money potentially. So that's different
- 5:39Speaker 6: from basketball. That's different from baseball and other sports. So
- 5:45Speaker 6: as I entered the league in twenty thirteen, I was
- 5:50Speaker 6: undrafted out of University of Pennsylvania.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I remember the Baltimore.
- 5:56Speaker 6: Ravens called me my hometown team. I'm like, man, seek
- 6:00Speaker 6: to be quite honest with you, I was pissed off, right,
- 6:02Speaker 6: Not because I was pissed off that I didn't get drafted.
- 6:05Speaker 6: That was really what it was, right, and it just
- 6:07Speaker 6: had a big chip on my shoulder. So for me,
- 6:09Speaker 6: I've been fortunate to just have this lens on life
- 6:12Speaker 6: and perspective where I'm not really a fan of too
- 6:15Speaker 6: much or anyone. So I remember, as a rookie enter
- 6:20Speaker 6: in the locker room, and this is my hometown team.
- 6:25Speaker 6: These are the guys I looked up to growing up,
- 6:27Speaker 6: and I remember this is fresh off of Super Bowl,
- 6:30Speaker 6: Fresh off of Super Bowl. I remember, actually, you know what,
- 6:33Speaker 6: the perfect story that might describe me. As my agent
- 6:38Speaker 6: at the time, he took us out right before the draft,
- 6:42Speaker 6: took us out in New York to some club up
- 6:46Speaker 6: there to just celebrate that night before the draft of
- 6:49Speaker 6: like all the work you put in and all that
- 6:51Speaker 6: type of stuff. And I remember, you know, like I said,
- 6:54Speaker 6: I grew up in Baltimore, that purple and black, you know.
- 6:58Speaker 6: I remember being in the house and seeing them, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 6: win the Super Bowl and bragging all my roommates and
- 7:04Speaker 6: all that type of stuff, wearing that with pride and
- 7:07Speaker 6: in the club. That for me was like my introduction
- 7:11Speaker 6: to the NFL, even though I wasn't even in it
- 7:14Speaker 6: at the time. But you had all of these different
- 7:18Speaker 6: That was when the draft was still in New York,
- 7:20Speaker 6: so you had all these different rappers and in different sections.
- 7:23Speaker 6: My agent had gotten us a section. I wasn't spending anyone.
- 7:27Speaker 1: My agent got as a section.
- 7:29Speaker 6: And the other guys there where you had Adrian Peterson
- 7:32Speaker 6: with a section, Ludacris across the way g Z, and
- 7:36Speaker 6: there was ray Rice, and I remember Ray Rice walked
- 7:39Speaker 6: up and I remember speaking to him and I'm like, yo,
- 7:45Speaker 6: I just want to say, you know, you really put
- 7:48Speaker 6: on for the city. That was amazing what y'all did. Man, Like,
- 7:51Speaker 6: I appreciate you, respect you. But a couple of days
- 7:55Speaker 6: like I'm gonna be in the NFL.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Too, so.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Ain't none of that fan the war right, like we competition, right,
- 8:04Speaker 6: But before that, I want to tell you how much
- 8:06Speaker 6: I respect you. So anyway, I say all that to
- 8:08Speaker 6: say a few days later, I get the call go
- 8:11Speaker 6: to the Ravens. Had that chip on my shoulder. But
- 8:14Speaker 6: the weird thing about the NFL is like I said,
- 8:16Speaker 6: I keep it. I've been blessed to be able to
- 8:19Speaker 6: keep things in a perspective and understand that, Okay, I
- 8:22Speaker 6: just got this call that says, hey, you're get a
- 8:26Speaker 6: chance to sign up and you're a Baltimore Raven. Now, no,
- 8:30Speaker 6: I'm not right, Like, there's still another step to actually
- 8:33Speaker 6: make the fifty three or to make practice squad whatever.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Sadly, there's a lot of guys who are like, oh,
- 8:38Speaker 6: I'm in it. No, right, Like the next week you
- 8:41Speaker 6: might be cut, or after this rookie mini camp you
- 8:43Speaker 6: might be cut. Right, So at that time, again, like
- 8:46Speaker 6: I said, I signed a three year, one point two
- 8:48Speaker 6: million dollar deal. However I got cut going into the
- 8:56Speaker 6: actual season, made it all through preseason and all that stuff,
- 8:59Speaker 6: got cut going into the actual season, and that jumped
- 9:01Speaker 6: my money down to a practice squad guy. After four weeks,
- 9:05Speaker 6: I got cut from Baltimore, So I really got four
- 9:08Speaker 6: weeks of pay. And then again, I mean there were
- 9:11Speaker 6: guys who got cut in the middle of training camp.
- 9:14Speaker 6: There's guys who got cut after three days.
- 9:16Speaker 7: So that there's a process after you get drafted, right,
- 9:19Speaker 7: because that's even a little confusing, Right, there's OTAs that
- 9:22Speaker 7: you have to make the tap. Then there is training
- 9:25Speaker 7: camp that you have to make the team. Then you
- 9:27Speaker 7: got four preseason game yeah, and so trying to make
- 9:30Speaker 7: the team.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:31Speaker 6: So the way I would think of it is you're
- 9:36Speaker 6: never really on the team. You know, depending on who
- 9:38Speaker 6: you are, you're never really on the team. Like I
- 9:40Speaker 6: even joke with my students this semester and even right
- 9:44Speaker 6: right now, like I could get this phone, go start ringing,
- 9:46Speaker 6: Nigga call be like listen code, like did you bring
- 9:48Speaker 6: your iPad up here? Like we were going in a
- 9:50Speaker 6: different route, right, And that's just the nature of the beast. So,
- 9:54Speaker 6: like you said, every single day, I mean they always
- 9:57Speaker 6: say that every day is an interview, but like literally,
- 9:59Speaker 6: like I think people don't understand that. Again, depending on
- 10:05Speaker 6: who you are, right your first round, second round, you
- 10:07Speaker 6: probably are guaranteed that first year, right, But that doesn't
- 10:11Speaker 6: mean you're guaranteed three years from now, four years from now, right,
- 10:15Speaker 6: And that's you. You just hope and pray that young
- 10:18Speaker 6: guys come in and understand that. And me, fortunately I
- 10:24Speaker 6: understood it. It was what motivated me to want to be
- 10:29Speaker 6: great and make the team and still be here seven
- 10:31Speaker 6: years later, right, But for a lot of guys, Like
- 10:35Speaker 6: I remember rookie years, some guys would go to this
- 10:38Speaker 6: mall across the street from our hotel, and I remember
- 10:41Speaker 6: getting on Snapchat. Snap was like big at the time,
- 10:46Speaker 6: and getting on there and they literally walking in there
- 10:50Speaker 6: selfie videos stunting like we're about to census SAG And
- 10:53Speaker 6: I'm like, bro, y'all all making the same thing I'm
- 10:55Speaker 6: making right now, which is like like maybe one hundred
- 10:58Speaker 6: and fifty bucks after all.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Right, so you had a one point two million dollar contract,
- 11:03Speaker 4: but then you four weeks in, you got demoted to
- 11:06Speaker 4: practice team right.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Now, so you get drafted or undrafted in the spring.
- 11:13Speaker 6: So like our rookies just showed up this weekend. So
- 11:17Speaker 6: where we may whatever we are right now, we train, train, training,
- 11:22Speaker 6: you can be there's guys being cut, there's guys being signed.
- 11:24Speaker 6: That entire time, like that roster is fluctuating. And then
- 11:27Speaker 6: by the time you get the training camp, you start
- 11:29Speaker 6: training camp in late July with ninety guys on the roster,
- 11:34Speaker 6: that roster fluctuates a bit, and then by the end
- 11:39Speaker 6: of August beginning of September, that roster cuts down to
- 11:42Speaker 6: fifty three and then on top of that fifty three
- 11:45Speaker 6: you have ten practice squad guys. I made it from
- 11:47Speaker 6: that May all the way through to August. I got cut,
- 11:52Speaker 6: became one of those practice squad guys where your salary
- 11:54Speaker 6: goes from a minimum of like four hundred thirty thousand
- 11:58Speaker 6: to one hundred thousand. And then four weeks later, four
- 12:03Speaker 6: weeks into the season, that's when I got released from
- 12:06Speaker 6: the team.
- 12:07Speaker 5: And that's in Baltimore.
- 12:08Speaker 6: That's in Baltimore.
- 12:09Speaker 3: So none of that one point two million was guaranteed.
- 12:11Speaker 3: None of it, not.
- 12:12Speaker 5: Even I wish it looks good on paper.
- 12:14Speaker 6: Though it looks good, it sounds good. So there's also
- 12:17Speaker 6: that that's the problem that that that you see that
- 12:21Speaker 6: headline and then the vultures come get your right family.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Because now it's like on paper, look he's a millionaire.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, but that's interesting.
- 12:30Speaker 4: I think people don't fully understand that, Like I can't
- 12:33Speaker 4: drive that home. All right, You got a one point
- 12:34Speaker 4: two million dollar contract. None of it was guaranteed. You
- 12:37Speaker 4: probably netted. How much you net probably probably like thirty
- 12:41Speaker 4: maybe that's.
- 12:42Speaker 3: How much you made from the.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Baltimore Ravens, Probably like thirty. Because in the spring I
- 12:47Speaker 6: made money in the spring, so like right now, you
- 12:48Speaker 6: might be making what maybe a couple hundred a week
- 12:52Speaker 6: because they take your your hotel and stuff that's the
- 12:56Speaker 6: team doesn't cover it. They cover it, but it's coming
- 12:59Speaker 6: out of your dam type of thing. I cover it,
- 13:01Speaker 6: but you just don't know, you know, you don't really
- 13:06Speaker 6: have a yeah anyway, so you're making maybe a few
- 13:10Speaker 6: hundred a week, and they cover your meals and all
- 13:12Speaker 6: that stuff on the weekend, so you don't really have
- 13:13Speaker 6: too many expenses. But then as you get to preseason,
- 13:18Speaker 6: now you're making I want to say, seven hundred a
- 13:20Speaker 6: week before taxes.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So.
- 13:25Speaker 6: You know, and that's what maybe five to six weeks,
- 13:30Speaker 6: so you really like four you know, who knows what
- 13:33Speaker 6: that is? Four hundred a week after all dollars done.
- 13:36Speaker 6: Dollars yeah, dollars yeah. And then once the season hits.
- 13:42Speaker 6: As a practice squad guy, I was making I was
- 13:46Speaker 6: seeing about four k after taxes. I think my check
- 13:49Speaker 6: was like seven thousand, seventy five hundred per week before,
- 13:54Speaker 6: so about four thousand after and less did that for
- 13:58Speaker 6: four weeks, so that's about sixteen right there. So I
- 14:01Speaker 6: probably made a little less than thirty from the Baltimore
- 14:03Speaker 6: Raisins and then two weeks later I got cut week four.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Two weeks later, I got picked up by the Tennessee
- 14:09Speaker 6: Titans practice squad with them for a bunch of weeks.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I got cut by them. A lot of people don't
- 14:15Speaker 6: know this too. It's like in my family, they understand.
- 14:20Speaker 6: And it's so funny that so at Tuesday at four
- 14:24Speaker 6: pm Eastern is when your money is guaranteed for the week.
- 14:27Speaker 6: So for me and the way that my career has been,
- 14:30Speaker 6: and I'm not superstitious, but I just I have certain things.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I have my routine. My family knew.
- 14:38Speaker 6: Don't call me Tuesday after four pm Eastern, right, So,
- 14:43Speaker 6: and where's that come from? Like I've been cut at
- 14:46Speaker 6: three fifty six pm Eastern wild, right.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So you don't get paid, don't get paid.
- 14:51Speaker 6: So if you get cut at four h one pm,
- 14:54Speaker 6: I'm paid for that week if I don't. So when
- 14:56Speaker 6: I was in Baltimore, they cut me on Wednesday morning
- 14:59Speaker 6: because they were like, had were planning on bringing you back,
- 15:01Speaker 6: you know, to showing good faith you, you know, we
- 15:04Speaker 6: we like you, all that type of stuff. We just
- 15:05Speaker 6: need to make some other roster changes. Blah blah, blah blah.
- 15:08Speaker 6: So you know, take the time off, you know, go work,
- 15:11Speaker 6: stay stay in shape, but we'll bring you back this week.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Then still waiting on that. But then Tennessee one time,
- 15:19Speaker 6: these dudes, man, I uh, it's funny. I went and
- 15:24Speaker 6: did like a whole charity out event for him. I went,
- 15:28Speaker 6: we went to a high school and uh, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 6: Tennessee Titans jerseys and all that type of stuff. And
- 15:36Speaker 6: on the way not on the way back. Later on
- 15:38Speaker 6: that evening, I had some rehabs set up a massage
- 15:42Speaker 6: appointment and it's three fifty six. I get the call.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I'm like this random Tennessee number, pick up the phone
- 15:48Speaker 6: and man, we need you to bring in your Oh man,
- 15:52Speaker 6: y'all knew this before you send me on the event.
- 15:55Speaker 4: The whole they sent you on, the whole charity thing
- 15:57Speaker 4: and all that, And then they waited for minutes before
- 16:00Speaker 4: the deadline of country.
- 16:01Speaker 3: So you don't get paid for the week minutes?
- 16:02Speaker 5: What about the massage? You have to cancel it another.
- 16:06Speaker 6: To be quite honest with you, I told myself, I
- 16:08Speaker 6: was like, I probably should cancer because I don't know
- 16:11Speaker 6: when that next check you comes right right? You know what?
- 16:13Speaker 1: Hey, man, you gotta.
- 16:14Speaker 6: I probably need it right now, you know, I probably
- 16:17Speaker 6: need to just relax. So uh so yeah, so my
- 16:20Speaker 6: family literally they would know, don't call me on Tuesday.
- 16:24Speaker 6: So literally at four to one, so years later, four
- 16:28Speaker 6: one pm. Whenever I was good, I'd send them a
- 16:32Speaker 6: bunch of gifts, a bunch of money, we count making
- 16:37Speaker 6: it range and all that type of stuff. And then
- 16:39Speaker 6: after you get to year five, uh, once that ball
- 16:44Speaker 6: is kicked off in your first in the FO game,
- 16:46Speaker 6: then you're guaranteed your salary for the whole year. So
- 16:49Speaker 6: like last year, that veterans veteran, so last year was
- 16:54Speaker 6: my first year having that. So after that first game,
- 16:58Speaker 6: I just sent them like six to you know, sixteen
- 17:01Speaker 6: different ones. But it's it's a lot of that goes
- 17:04Speaker 6: into it, basically, you know, with what you're getting at
- 17:07Speaker 6: is there's a lot that goes into it that people
- 17:08Speaker 6: don't think about. They don't understand. Yes, you see that
- 17:11Speaker 6: big contract, you see that big number, and that is great, right,
- 17:15Speaker 6: but what are you really getting from that one? You
- 17:18Speaker 6: got a fifty percent of it gone off.
- 17:21Speaker 4: The talk about that because a lot of people don't
- 17:23Speaker 4: fully understand how taxes work, right, and they're.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Like, well, you should, you should set up corporation.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Like their employees, they get paid, it's like how you
- 17:30Speaker 4: get paid, right, so they don't have opportunity to defer
- 17:33Speaker 4: the income.
- 17:34Speaker 3: It's it's not an.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Option, right, your boss ain't going for that exactly.
- 17:38Speaker 4: So I because social media a lot of times people
- 17:40Speaker 4: write that like, well they if they were smart, Like, no,
- 17:43Speaker 4: it doesn't work like that, just like if you were smart,
- 17:45Speaker 4: you were doing that, right, No, you don't have that option.
- 17:47Speaker 4: So automatically fifty because you know how you tax. Automatically,
- 17:50Speaker 4: fifty percent goes to tax gone off the red. Depending
- 17:54Speaker 4: on what state you're in, it's even higher. Right then
- 17:57Speaker 4: it's stay taxed. They take that out of your paycheck
- 17:59Speaker 4: every time you get paid in that in that.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Particular Yep, yep, they'll do that. Uh Like if you so,
- 18:05Speaker 6: if you're playing in California, so you look at the schedule,
- 18:07Speaker 6: you're like, dangn I got three games in California, right
- 18:11Speaker 6: West coast trip that you know you get taxed at
- 18:15Speaker 6: that California rates thirteen percent.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And it's crazy because Rod Smith shout out to Rod Smith,
- 18:20Speaker 4: He's he's been a loyal follow up from the beginning
- 18:22Speaker 4: and anybody has a no Rod Smith, he's a Hall
- 18:25Speaker 4: of Famer.
- 18:25Speaker 5: Rint not yet but a legend, legend. And dev Den
- 18:29Speaker 5: Dever Broncos wide receiver Denver legend.
- 18:32Speaker 4: So I put a post up a while ago and
- 18:35Speaker 4: me and him he was common and he was like, yeah, well,
- 18:37Speaker 4: people don't realize it's that all right. California has the
- 18:40Speaker 4: highest state tax in the country, right, like thirteen percent,
- 18:42Speaker 4: like you said. But let's say you've played it in
- 18:43Speaker 4: for Miami Dolphins Florida, right, which Florida has no state
- 18:46Speaker 4: income tax, right, So what happens is that you might
- 18:49Speaker 4: practice in Florida from Monday to let's say Thursday, right,
- 18:54Speaker 4: fly when you fly off on a Sunday game Saturday Saturday,
- 18:58Speaker 4: So you practice from Monday is Saturday in Florida, you
- 19:02Speaker 4: are in Florida. You're in California for Saturday and Sunday
- 19:06Speaker 4: maybe like Monday morning early. So you only spent two
- 19:10Speaker 4: days in California, but the whole week is taxed in
- 19:13Speaker 4: California because that's where you played the game.
- 19:14Speaker 8: Man.
- 19:15Speaker 4: So even though you prepared, like only spend forty eight
- 19:17Speaker 4: hours in that particular state and you practiced in the
- 19:21Speaker 4: state that you actually live in. But it doesn't matter.
- 19:24Speaker 4: You played that game in that space for the whole week.
- 19:26Speaker 4: The whole week's paycheck is taxed in California.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Yeah, so you guys played Jersey state tax or is
- 19:32Speaker 5: it right? That's what it got played?
- 19:34Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, but I wouldn't be surprised New York trying
- 19:37Speaker 6: to take a little bit of that.
- 19:38Speaker 5: I'm thinking like.
- 19:41Speaker 1: New York, but I wouldn't be surprised.
- 19:45Speaker 6: Trust me, I'd have seen a lot I've seen, like
- 19:48Speaker 6: you said, every so when we play a team in Texas,
- 19:51Speaker 6: it's like, okay, cool, right, London games, London international taxes,
- 19:55Speaker 6: they cost a bit too, right, Florida teams you know,
- 20:00Speaker 6: you see Miami or Tampa ballion schedule.
- 20:02Speaker 1: You're likes Tennessee, you know cool?
- 20:06Speaker 6: Another thing you know a few years ago, there was
- 20:09Speaker 6: a guy in the locker room when I was in Detroit. Detroit,
- 20:12Speaker 6: they have the city tax and the state tax, so
- 20:14Speaker 6: they'll tax you in Michigan and then they'll tax you
- 20:16Speaker 6: in Detroit. Now, when we so, one guy got very
- 20:22Speaker 6: very smart. His financial advisor accountant got very very smart
- 20:26Speaker 6: with it. Because again, like you said, if you guys
- 20:28Speaker 6: are want to play the game with me of like, okay, hey,
- 20:30Speaker 6: I'm only here for twenty four hours. You know, sometimes
- 20:34Speaker 6: we fly in at five pm, we out the next
- 20:37Speaker 6: day at five pm after the game kickoffs at one.
- 20:41Speaker 1: You know, I'm only here for twenty four hours. You're
- 20:42Speaker 1: gonna tax me for the whole week.
- 20:44Speaker 6: I remember. His issue was Detroit was taking tax every
- 20:49Speaker 6: single week as if we trained.
- 20:52Speaker 1: There, played there, and all that stuff, like we were
- 20:54Speaker 1: there for the whole week.
- 20:55Speaker 6: So when when we played with the Lions, the our
- 20:58Speaker 6: facilities in Allen Park, the stadium is in Detroit, Michigan.
- 21:03Speaker 6: It's like a twenty minute ride. But Detroit was trying
- 21:06Speaker 6: to take taxes as if you were there every single play,
- 21:09Speaker 6: because they'll actually literally break down the days and be like, well,
- 21:13Speaker 6: you know you were here one hundred and such and
- 21:15Speaker 6: such days. So he was like, no, okay, I'm actually
- 21:19Speaker 6: only there out of the what eight home games. I'm
- 21:23Speaker 6: there Saturday night when we stay at the team hotel,
- 21:26Speaker 6: and I'm there Sunday when we played. So them one
- 21:29Speaker 6: hundred eighty days, now you got sixteen of them, right,
- 21:32Speaker 6: And so he ended up going back and getting some
- 21:34Speaker 6: money from Detroit on that.
- 21:37Speaker 7: So the interesting thing is like the way your mind's
- 21:38Speaker 7: working right now. You're like, if I'm play in Texas, right,
- 21:40Speaker 7: if I'm playing the Cowboys or the Texans, I know
- 21:42Speaker 7: there's no state tex How many of your counterparts have
- 21:46Speaker 7: that same mind frame?
- 21:46Speaker 6: I think a lot due, I think a lot do
- 21:48Speaker 6: because I mean, at that point, you're talking about thousands, right,
- 21:53Speaker 6: Like you're not talking about like you're talking about the
- 21:55Speaker 6: difference in you know, depending on what you're making. You're
- 21:58Speaker 6: talking about the difference in like sixth at your grand
- 22:02Speaker 6: by playing somewhere else versus you.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Know, I mean some guys, I mean the way they
- 22:08Speaker 1: get paid some guys.
- 22:09Speaker 6: You're talking a good fifteen twenty grand difference, right, So
- 22:12Speaker 6: guys are thinking about it again, you know, not to
- 22:17Speaker 6: take up all y'all time, but there's different things that
- 22:19Speaker 6: people out there just don't understand, like the fact of
- 22:23Speaker 6: like you have to have multiple places of residency, see right,
- 22:27Speaker 6: Like sometimes like you literally just have to. And I've
- 22:31Speaker 6: never wanted to be that guy having Like I'm a
- 22:34Speaker 6: frugal person, right, I'm cheap school.
- 22:37Speaker 1: With me, right, I have no problem. I'm proud of it.
- 22:40Speaker 6: But like I literally I have a home base here
- 22:44Speaker 6: in New Jersey with my wife and I. When I
- 22:46Speaker 6: was playing in Detroit, she works in Manhattan and she's
- 22:50Speaker 6: from here. We had home base here, so now play
- 22:53Speaker 6: with the Jets. I'm like, man, okay, like we can
- 22:55Speaker 6: just have home base like and that's the crib.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Well, guess what.
- 23:00Speaker 6: But home base for me is forty five minutes away
- 23:02Speaker 6: from here in no traffic. So if I wake up
- 23:05Speaker 6: in the morning and it's raining hard. I remember my
- 23:07Speaker 6: first day trying to come in and reporting to the Jets.
- 23:10Speaker 6: It was raining hard, and my driving from forty five
- 23:13Speaker 6: minutes no traffic and this is like six thirty in
- 23:17Speaker 6: the morning right to an hour and fifteen minutes. Now
- 23:21Speaker 6: people are like, oh, well, just wake up early and
- 23:22Speaker 6: all that type of stuff. Well, guess what if you're
- 23:24Speaker 6: late to your job, you get a slap on the risk,
- 23:26Speaker 6: right you boss. You know at a certain point you
- 23:28Speaker 6: can't keep being laid. You'll get your you get fired.
- 23:31Speaker 6: But for me, if I'm late, that's a thirteen thousand
- 23:33Speaker 6: dollars fine, right, Like that's ill.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 23:37Speaker 6: I can go ahead. And so last year I had
- 23:40Speaker 6: to rent a place. I have a house forty minutes
- 23:42Speaker 6: from here, and I had I mean, some people might
- 23:45Speaker 6: be like, well you didn't have to know, Like for me,
- 23:48Speaker 6: I had to rent a place seven minutes. It's not
- 23:50Speaker 6: worth the risk, right, it's not worth the risk. It's
- 23:52Speaker 6: not worth being a few minutes late. And then also
- 23:55Speaker 6: it's just the cost of doing business, Right.
- 23:57Speaker 3: You're going travel at forty five minutes.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Yeah, minutes when I'm like I told people, it's an
- 24:02Speaker 6: investment as well, right, Like forty five minutes. That's forty
- 24:05Speaker 6: five minutes I could be working on my body getting
- 24:08Speaker 6: ready for the next week's game. That's forty five minutes
- 24:10Speaker 6: that somebody is literally watching film with Just how am
- 24:12Speaker 6: I gonna whoop Brandon coping this week?
- 24:14Speaker 5: Right?
- 24:15Speaker 6: And I need that forty five minutes to make sure
- 24:16Speaker 6: I'm prepared for him as well. So there's a bunch
- 24:20Speaker 6: of different costs. You know, Guys talk about transporting vehicles
- 24:25Speaker 6: back and forth, right, Like I live in California, but
- 24:28Speaker 6: you know, on my home base, I'm born and raised
- 24:30Speaker 6: in California. I have everything over there. But now I'm
- 24:33Speaker 6: with the Jets, Right, how's my vehicle getting back and forth?
- 24:36Speaker 6: Or am I gonna uber it every day? Am I
- 24:38Speaker 6: gonna walk every day, bike every day. What about when
- 24:40Speaker 6: it's snowy? So do I need to pay the transport
- 24:44Speaker 6: back a car back and forth? Do I need a
- 24:46Speaker 6: renting car? Do I need to buy a car? Some
- 24:48Speaker 6: of these costs that we see guys with were like,
- 24:50Speaker 6: you know, we just assumed like, oh, this guy, he's
- 24:53Speaker 6: being extra, he's doing that, you know, but some of
- 24:55Speaker 6: this stuff is just a cost of like convenience and
- 24:57Speaker 6: doing business at a high level, right, and that you know,
- 25:01Speaker 6: again it was not a woe is us, Right, I'm
- 25:04Speaker 6: thankful to have those type of problems as opposed to others.
- 25:07Speaker 6: But you know, those are costs that you just can't
- 25:10Speaker 6: escape from, all right.
- 25:12Speaker 4: So yes, so now we're going to talk about Okay,
- 25:14Speaker 4: we gave you a lot of gyms on the athletics side,
- 25:18Speaker 4: but what we like about Brandon is that he's more
- 25:21Speaker 4: than just an athlete, like Lebron says, an athlete.
- 25:23Speaker 8: Right.
- 25:24Speaker 4: So now we're going to go into the business side
- 25:26Speaker 4: of things. And but before we do that, shout out
- 25:30Speaker 4: to Baltimore. We didn't we didn't actually, So if you
- 25:34Speaker 4: listen to our podcast, you know that A we have
- 25:36Speaker 4: deep ties to Baltimore, and some of our best interviews
- 25:40Speaker 4: have been Baltimore guests. Right, we have Valentia, we had
- 25:43Speaker 4: Derek Falcon who is a restaurant owner. So now we
- 25:46Speaker 4: got Brandon too. So shout out to the DVP.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Baltimore keeps sleeping on us if you want to.
- 25:55Speaker 3: So all right, So, so can we talk real estate?
- 25:57Speaker 4: Because real estate's real trending right now and everybody wants
- 26:00Speaker 4: to be a real estate investor. So can you can
- 26:03Speaker 4: you talk about your real estate journey, your philosophy? Yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 4: can you just enlighten us as full because there's a
- 26:09Speaker 4: lot different ways how you can make money in real estate.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a beautiful thing. So for me, I invested
- 26:16Speaker 6: in the stock market. I'm still invested in the stock market.
- 26:19Speaker 6: But for me, I like to I've realized as I've evolved,
- 26:23Speaker 6: is I like to have control or more control over
- 26:27Speaker 6: what I invest in as opposed to the stock market
- 26:29Speaker 6: where the president could say whatever he wants to say
- 26:33Speaker 6: and the thing is down, you know, six hundred points
- 26:36Speaker 6: or whatever. You know, Like there are certain days where
- 26:38Speaker 6: I feel like I'm made great calls on stocks, and
- 26:43Speaker 6: just because of the macro environment, everything was down and
- 26:47Speaker 6: I'm like, I have no control over this stuff. So
- 26:50Speaker 6: for me, real estate was an opportunity to have more
- 26:54Speaker 6: ownership obviously real legitimate, legitimate ownership of an asset, and
- 27:00Speaker 6: also like more ownership of the outcome because whether if
- 27:06Speaker 6: I lose money and make money whatever, like the only
- 27:08Speaker 6: person I can look at is myself, because I'm the
- 27:10Speaker 6: one pulling the trigger on everything. So I got in
- 27:15Speaker 6: to Originally, what I wanted to do was get into rentals. Uh,
- 27:19Speaker 6: you know, people always talk about the passive income and
- 27:21Speaker 6: all that type of stuff. So I remember my wife
- 27:25Speaker 6: and now we went to Temple University. We went to Penn,
- 27:29Speaker 6: but we went to Temple to look at houses and
- 27:31Speaker 6: stuff just because the market at Pen was way, wait, wait,
- 27:34Speaker 6: out of my price range. And so we just went
- 27:38Speaker 6: around looking at college dorms and all that type of stuff.
- 27:41Speaker 6: And that was our first like, let's get to understand
- 27:44Speaker 6: what's what we should be looking for as we look
- 27:47Speaker 6: through these homes.
- 27:48Speaker 3: That's North Philly, right.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Yeah, And so literally didn't act on it or move
- 27:56Speaker 6: on it for about another year until there's a Baltimore.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Speaking of Baltimore, there's a couple Khalil and Kiera Utah.
- 28:08Speaker 1: They run this.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Business called and their Instagram is charm City Buyers, and
- 28:15Speaker 6: they've done a great job of sharing information and I've
- 28:19Speaker 6: been blessed to have I've been blessed to have great mentors,
- 28:25Speaker 6: and so I reached out to them. I saw what
- 28:26Speaker 6: they were doing, and they started taking me through homes
- 28:31Speaker 6: and stuff like that. We went to an auction and
- 28:34Speaker 6: all that type of stuff, and literally I was just
- 28:36Speaker 6: a fly on the wall seeing how they broke down properties,
- 28:39Speaker 6: cap rates and all that type of stuff. And finally
- 28:43Speaker 6: we were trying to invest and going on the property together.
- 28:46Speaker 6: But when you're doing that, you kind of realize, well,
- 28:48Speaker 6: like you know, on the outcome, I'm barely seeing anything,
- 28:52Speaker 6: it's not really worth it. So we ended up investing
- 28:55Speaker 6: in different ways. I just invested into their business and
- 28:58Speaker 6: they ended up buying back a whole block of properties
- 29:01Speaker 6: in Baltimore. But by doing that, it was one I
- 29:05Speaker 6: got invested in real estate that was actually my first investment.
- 29:08Speaker 1: And then two they gave me access to what they
- 29:11Speaker 1: were doing, right.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Pictures, videos, just learning from that standpoint at a certain point,
- 29:19Speaker 6: Like for me, I'm a quick learner and a quick
- 29:23Speaker 6: like once I'm into something. One once you invest and
- 29:25Speaker 6: you care more about it. But then two, once I'm
- 29:28Speaker 6: into something I like, I jump off the cliff sometimes,
- 29:33Speaker 6: especially when I'm really passionate about stuff. So after that,
- 29:37Speaker 6: then I went being out in Detroit, I'm like, okay,
- 29:40Speaker 6: so before I buy rental units, right, because I look
- 29:45Speaker 6: at that as marriage, right, Like I'm with this house
- 29:48Speaker 6: for a long time for life. Right, you can sell it,
- 29:51Speaker 6: you can get rid of it, but for me, like
- 29:54Speaker 6: that's marriage as opposed to me, let me just date
- 29:57Speaker 6: for a little bit. So I was like, okay, well,
- 29:59Speaker 6: let me do some flips to learn about what goes
- 30:03Speaker 6: into rentals and buying and rehabbing stuff. So as an athlete,
- 30:07Speaker 6: one of my biggest fears and just as a person
- 30:10Speaker 6: in general, my biggest pet peeve growing up was people
- 30:13Speaker 6: thinking that they were smarter than me. Y're not not
- 30:15Speaker 6: smarter than me, but but thinking that. I was, Yeah, well,
- 30:18Speaker 6: thinking that talking to you like like you don't know
- 30:21Speaker 6: what's going on the type of thing you know. The
- 30:26Speaker 6: now is an athlete, that turns to having a fear
- 30:29Speaker 6: of people trying to take advantage of you, and you
- 30:32Speaker 6: know they do this to people all the time.
- 30:38Speaker 5: So for me.
- 30:38Speaker 1: It was like, I need to learn how much nails costs.
- 30:40Speaker 6: I need to learn how much drive all costs, how
- 30:42Speaker 6: much paint costs, all that type of stuff, so that
- 30:44Speaker 6: now when I do these bigger projects, you can't just
- 30:47Speaker 6: come to me with like, you know, hey, to paint
- 30:49Speaker 6: this hot is gonna cost eight thousand nothing bucks. Right,
- 30:52Speaker 6: I didn't know any better. I'm like, okay, well eight
- 30:55Speaker 6: thousand and six thousand. I don't you know, if you
- 30:57Speaker 6: have no gauge, then then you just take whatever people
- 31:01Speaker 6: give you. So I met a guy found out through
- 31:05Speaker 6: the locker room that there's a guy called a guy
- 31:08Speaker 6: named Rob Simms, him Calvin Johnson, Jason Strahorn.
- 31:13Speaker 1: They started this.
- 31:14Speaker 6: Whole group called Locker Room Consulting Group. But at the
- 31:17Speaker 6: time that was just a thought. But Rob had he
- 31:23Speaker 6: talked about great mentors.
- 31:24Speaker 1: He literally, you know, texted.
- 31:27Speaker 6: He picked me up from the facility one day and
- 31:29Speaker 6: literally drove me around Detroit and walked me through houses
- 31:34Speaker 6: that he was actually currently flipping, right, and he showed
- 31:38Speaker 6: me the levels of stuff that he was doing. He
- 31:40Speaker 6: was doing some regular single family homes. He then took
- 31:43Speaker 6: me to like a big, like fifty unit apartment building
- 31:47Speaker 6: brand new buildout type of thing, and then showed me
- 31:52Speaker 6: a two hundred unit project that he was working on
- 31:54Speaker 6: investing in Florida.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Right, Like, so you realize there's levels.
- 31:58Speaker 6: But him at the time, he also gave me access
- 32:02Speaker 6: and so he was like, hey, like this is the
- 32:04Speaker 6: house I'm doing.
- 32:06Speaker 1: You know, if you want to get into it, you can.
- 32:08Speaker 6: You know, I don't need you to write like that's
- 32:11Speaker 6: that's the best pitch in the world, right, Like, you know,
- 32:14Speaker 6: you this house, I've already bought it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Like it's going to get renovated with it without you,
- 32:18Speaker 1: but if you want to.
- 32:21Speaker 7: That's that's the power power of having mentors, right because
- 32:24Speaker 7: he could at least expose you to that exactly, right.
- 32:26Speaker 5: And this is a guy who was a veteran and
- 32:28Speaker 5: you're a young guy in the league. He didn't have
- 32:30Speaker 5: to do that.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was retired.
- 32:32Speaker 6: He was retired at the time, and he was just like, cope,
- 32:34Speaker 6: like I really value what you saw something that. Yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 6: he was like, I wish I would have started earlier.
- 32:39Speaker 6: I know he has rentals and stuff like that, Like
- 32:42Speaker 6: he rents some his rentals out to players and stuff like,
- 32:46Speaker 6: and you know, you you you find yourself a mentor
- 32:52Speaker 6: or mentors that you can just one add value to them,
- 32:57Speaker 6: you know, and value is not always in the sense
- 32:59Speaker 6: of money.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:03Speaker 6: There's a there's a c NBC just did this commercial
- 33:07Speaker 6: and I'm talking on it about mentors, and they chopped
- 33:11Speaker 6: up some of it. But one of the things I
- 33:13Speaker 6: was trying to say is like you don't have to
- 33:15Speaker 6: think it's just like giving a check, right, Like, hey, like,
- 33:18Speaker 6: I'll I'll come organize your books, right, Like I'll do
- 33:22Speaker 6: whatever I need you need me to do, Like I'll
- 33:25Speaker 6: follow your paperwork, whatever you need me to do to
- 33:27Speaker 6: add value to you.
- 33:28Speaker 1: I'll do that just for access to you.
- 33:30Speaker 4: And I'm glad you said that because a lot of
- 33:32Speaker 4: times people we're selfish by nature, right, So people want help, mentorship,
- 33:38Speaker 4: they want advice. But I heard somebody say before, like
- 33:42Speaker 4: you have to see how can I help this person?
- 33:45Speaker 4: Like I mean, like if you think from that standpoint,
- 33:47Speaker 4: then they will be more likely to help you as
- 33:49Speaker 4: opposed to just saying help me. That's more of a
- 33:51Speaker 4: charity thing right right now, if we have an equal relationship,
- 33:55Speaker 4: you might not be able to help me financially, but
- 33:57Speaker 4: like you said, you can still add value.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Yeah, right, And the thing and that's the thing is
- 34:03Speaker 6: like value is sorry, value is what you make it, right.
- 34:09Speaker 6: I think that, like you said, some people just come
- 34:11Speaker 6: up and say, hey, help me, right, and it's like okay,
- 34:15Speaker 6: Like well, you have to also look at your own
- 34:18Speaker 6: relationships and like anything that you're like, all of these
- 34:22Speaker 6: are transactions and either you're winning it's equal, or you're losing.
- 34:28Speaker 6: And there's only a certain amount or a certain number
- 34:31Speaker 6: of relationships that you can really be just losing it.
- 34:34Speaker 6: And you know, and that's at a certain point, it's
- 34:39Speaker 6: like we're all for giving back, we're all for trying
- 34:41Speaker 6: to help. But like, for example, with this class, I've
- 34:45Speaker 6: had this class and we've we've gained a lot of
- 34:49Speaker 6: media attention because of it, and that's been great. And
- 34:53Speaker 6: I used to pride myself on literally answering everything, every
- 34:57Speaker 6: DM email, text message, all that type of stuff, even
- 35:00Speaker 6: with every times where you know, I'd make a play
- 35:02Speaker 6: and it would be crazy amount of stuff in my
- 35:05Speaker 6: phone and I even if it was a week later,
- 35:07Speaker 6: I would do it. Now, like my brother he helps
- 35:10Speaker 6: he's my business manager, business partner. He helps me with stuff,
- 35:13Speaker 6: and he realizes because the first couple of weeks he
- 35:16Speaker 6: was like, now we can get through it. And then
- 35:18Speaker 6: after a few weeks he's like, yeah, nah, man, we
- 35:22Speaker 6: might have to get a template, right, And like I
- 35:24Speaker 6: told him, like, you know, you got to realize there's
- 35:26Speaker 6: certain things like I still have stuff I want to
- 35:28Speaker 6: do and create, and and I would literally spend all
- 35:30Speaker 6: day just answering emails or d ms, right, and then
- 35:35Speaker 6: tell us about it, Like it's like you got you
- 35:38Speaker 6: have to pick and choose your battles, right, and so
- 35:41Speaker 6: as much as you want to give, and you know,
- 35:44Speaker 6: people will throw your name through the mud if you
- 35:47Speaker 6: don't answer their particular message or whatever. Right, it's like
- 35:50Speaker 6: I plan on trying to answer it, but I'm gonna
- 35:52Speaker 6: answer it in in what I create, I think so.
- 35:56Speaker 6: But yeah, so finding them mentors and stuff like that.
- 35:58Speaker 6: I ended up giving him money to invest in his
- 36:02Speaker 6: house and then even a boy being in that I
- 36:05Speaker 6: was able to see what I liked about, how they
- 36:09Speaker 6: were doing things, what I didn't like, what I wanted
- 36:11Speaker 6: to do better, what I wanted to do less of,
- 36:14Speaker 6: more of alarm systems, cameras, whatever, right, Because again there's levels.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Right, and so I could realize that Rob was on this.
- 36:23Speaker 6: He's on a bigger level than me, right, because if
- 36:26Speaker 6: he loses his money again.
- 36:27Speaker 3: You know he he.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Might be able to withstand that.
- 36:34Speaker 7: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.

- 38:24Speaker 9: Coach, the energy out there felt different. What changed for
- 38:27Speaker 9: the team today?
- 38:28Speaker 10: It was the new game day, scratches from the California
- 38:30Speaker 10: Lottery players, everything. Those games sent the team's energy through
- 38:33Speaker 10: the roof.
- 38:34Speaker 9: Are you saying it was the off field play that
- 38:36Speaker 9: made the difference on the field.
- 38:37Speaker 10: Hey, little play makes your day, and today it made
- 38:40Speaker 10: the game. That's all for now, Coach, One more question.
- 38:43Speaker 9: Play than new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco forty nine
- 38:46Speaker 9: ers and Los Angeles Rams scratchers from the California Lottery.
- 38:49Speaker 9: A little play can make your day, peace may Responsiblit
- 38:52Speaker 9: must be eighteen years or older to purchase plate or
- 38:54Speaker 9: claim it's.
- 38:55Speaker 6: Gonna hurt little b Right, So I need to know,
- 38:58Speaker 6: like I need to what's going on right now? You
- 39:00Speaker 6: know what's going on at three thirty pm. So so
- 39:03Speaker 6: from that again, I'm invested with them. And then I
- 39:05Speaker 6: went and jumped off and started doing my own. And
- 39:07Speaker 6: the reason why I started doing them in Detroit was
- 39:09Speaker 6: one the market was amazing. You could buy three, four bedroom,
- 39:14Speaker 6: three bathroom house for thirty five thousand dollars.
- 39:16Speaker 4: That's why I wanted to ask you, so Detroit, how
- 39:18Speaker 4: is the market Detroit right now? Because I've heard mixed things.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Some people think that it's like the best thing ever,
- 39:23Speaker 4: but some people saying it's already starting to get more
- 39:25Speaker 4: saturated and it's not as you know, good as people
- 39:29Speaker 4: are making it out to me. Yeah, you have mixed
- 39:32Speaker 4: a few opinions on it. What's the marketing?
- 39:33Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's clearly is getting more saturated than
- 39:37Speaker 6: it was two years ago, three years ago.
- 39:39Speaker 1: But that's everything, right.
- 39:43Speaker 6: I I if you talk to anybody in Atlanta, they'll
- 39:47Speaker 6: tell you, like, prices here are getting more and more expensive.
- 39:49Speaker 6: It's getting more and more saturated. Then you're like, okay,
- 39:51Speaker 6: well what's the rent. It's like eleven hundred dollars for
- 39:54Speaker 6: three bedroom, you know, all right, comparison to New York. Well, shoot,
- 39:59Speaker 6: I'll take that off.
- 40:00Speaker 5: That's a studio exactly.
- 40:01Speaker 6: So, so I think I keep it in that perspective,
- 40:05Speaker 6: in that context. For me, Detroit was an opportunity and
- 40:08Speaker 6: still is an opportunity to learn on a smaller scale
- 40:13Speaker 6: and not risk even when I say small scales, not
- 40:17Speaker 6: risk as much money as some of these bigger market,
- 40:20Speaker 6: bigger markets, these bigger shows. Right Like I would turn
- 40:23Speaker 6: on one of the best houses we did in Detroit.
- 40:26Speaker 6: We bought this house for at auction for thirty six thousand.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Santa Rosa Drive.
- 40:33Speaker 6: That was that's her nickname, four bedroom, two and a
- 40:38Speaker 6: half bathroom house. We walked into it and this was,
- 40:41Speaker 6: I mean, this was a lay up home run type
- 40:43Speaker 6: of thing. Walked into it and it was unfortunately, you know,
- 40:47Speaker 6: it was an older woman who passed away. Her family
- 40:50Speaker 6: just didn't know to take care of it, didn't know
- 40:53Speaker 6: to pay the bills or whatever, so it just literally
- 40:56Speaker 6: was sitting there. We took it at auction and uh,
- 41:00Speaker 6: well kept house, all that type of stuff we put
- 41:03Speaker 6: in I want to say, twelve thousand dollars just to
- 41:08Speaker 6: do the kitchen, redo carpet, and to add a shower
- 41:12Speaker 6: instead of the elderly tug on the first floor bathroom.
- 41:15Speaker 6: We turned around. We sold it off market for one
- 41:19Speaker 6: hundred and twenty seven thousand.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Right, So how long was that turn around?
- 41:23Speaker 6: It literally the longest part it was a two week rehab.
- 41:27Speaker 6: The longest part was waiting for the eviction to go
- 41:31Speaker 6: through because still technically, even though no one was living
- 41:33Speaker 6: in it, we still legally went through the eviction process
- 41:36Speaker 6: with the court. No one showed up, waited thirty days
- 41:39Speaker 6: to enter, just to you know, protect our backs.
- 41:41Speaker 1: But that was the longest part.
- 41:43Speaker 6: After that, we got in two weeks and then flipped it.
- 41:48Speaker 6: So literally made one hundred and fifteen percent on my
- 41:51Speaker 6: money on that. But again, I turned on HGTV and
- 41:55Speaker 6: I see these couples and they doing amazing stuff, like
- 41:58Speaker 6: they're doing great flips and stuff like that, and you
- 42:00Speaker 6: like you just put out seven hundred thousand to bring
- 42:03Speaker 6: back fifty thousand.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm always looking like, yeah, it's gonna coste not
- 42:07Speaker 5: a renovent. I'm like, that's eight hundred.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Thousand, but that's sorry. You paid thirty five thousand one auction.
- 42:13Speaker 4: You paid probably cash, right, But you could have got
- 42:16Speaker 4: that house without paying up to thirty five thousand, right, probably.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Well, since it was auction, I probably not.
- 42:22Speaker 6: Probably I would probably had the I would hard money
- 42:25Speaker 6: lends hard money or something like that, so I would
- 42:28Speaker 6: people I paid, they would have got their money, but
- 42:31Speaker 6: I probably could have came out of pocket less by
- 42:34Speaker 6: doing finding another lender.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Yea, Because he was trying to say for the average
- 42:38Speaker 4: person who might not have thirty five thousand, but they
- 42:41Speaker 4: still are interested in investing and they still want to
- 42:43Speaker 4: make money, right, yep, what's your advice for them?
- 42:46Speaker 3: They may not have you know, the same opportunities or
- 42:49Speaker 3: you know the same bank.
- 42:51Speaker 1: I'm the bank.
- 42:51Speaker 6: I'm fortunate to be able to be the bank in
- 42:54Speaker 6: my situations. And even still people tell me, like, you
- 42:57Speaker 6: want to start using other people's money, But for anyone
- 43:03Speaker 6: out there trying to get in one, I'd say make
- 43:06Speaker 6: sure you're ready and before.
- 43:08Speaker 1: What I mean by that is is what I found
- 43:11Speaker 1: in real.
- 43:11Speaker 6: Estate is there's a checklist of things that you need
- 43:16Speaker 6: to have and be ready for it, because especially if
- 43:18Speaker 6: you're taking on someone else's money, and then that means
- 43:21Speaker 6: you're you're holding on to that interest rate. You want
- 43:23Speaker 6: to you want to limit your you're holding time. Right,
- 43:29Speaker 6: What do I mean by being ready? What does your
- 43:32Speaker 6: contracting team look like?
- 43:33Speaker 8: Right?
- 43:35Speaker 6: Your contracting team can make or break your entire process.
- 43:41Speaker 6: What I found, I guess this is a better way
- 43:43Speaker 6: to said. Is What I found is people generally can't
- 43:48Speaker 6: do what they tell you they can do right. So
- 43:50Speaker 6: it's really vetting their vetting your contracting team, creating that
- 43:55Speaker 6: budget and doing your best to stick to it even
- 43:58Speaker 6: though you know you're never go and stick to it
- 44:01Speaker 6: like that sounds weird, but like you know it's going
- 44:03Speaker 6: to go over So for me, my process is well,
- 44:07Speaker 6: sorry to answer your question, there are hard money lenders
- 44:10Speaker 6: out there. There's people who will lend you money. You
- 44:12Speaker 6: can collateralize it with the car, house, whatever, depending on
- 44:16Speaker 6: the amount of alone. However, before you do that, you
- 44:22Speaker 6: need to make sure that you're ready and to make
- 44:24Speaker 6: you feel good about it. One of my mentors, he
- 44:28Speaker 6: that's outside of rob and charm City Buyers. One of
- 44:33Speaker 6: the things that he told me that really helped me
- 44:35Speaker 6: jump into my first home was he sat down with
- 44:38Speaker 6: me at dinner and he was just like, you know, cope,
- 44:40Speaker 6: this this isn't rocket science. He was like, a lot
- 44:44Speaker 6: of people make what they make, what they do seem
- 44:48Speaker 6: like it's rocket science.
- 44:49Speaker 3: But this isn't.
- 44:50Speaker 6: Like you buy a house, you've renovated, put money into it,
- 44:53Speaker 6: the renovated, you.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Sell it for more. Right, it ain't that.
- 44:57Speaker 6: Now there's certain things in there that make it feel stressful,
- 45:00Speaker 6: all stuff permits and all of this different stuff. Oh,
- 45:02Speaker 6: pipe burst for all you know, but it ain't rocket signed.
- 45:07Speaker 6: So for anybody listening, just keep that in mind. Right,
- 45:10Speaker 6: Like you buy a house, you renovate it, you put
- 45:13Speaker 6: money in, you pay people to renovate it, and you
- 45:15Speaker 6: sell it for hire.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Right, and before you do that, you do all your work.
- 45:19Speaker 6: You research My process. We can get into that if
- 45:21Speaker 6: we want. My process is to look at the comps
- 45:24Speaker 6: before I ever walk into a house. Just to look
- 45:26Speaker 6: at the comps is to make sure that, like you
- 45:28Speaker 6: send me my realtor, I find I have a realtors,
- 45:31Speaker 6: I have multiple realtors. I tell them what I'm looking for,
- 45:33Speaker 6: tell them what my investment criteria is, and I tell
- 45:36Speaker 6: them what I need to make off of it. I
- 45:38Speaker 6: only look at houses that I feel like I can
- 45:40Speaker 6: at least make thirty K off of, right, And you know,
- 45:43Speaker 6: some of the real says, oh man, that's I don't know,
- 45:45Speaker 6: Like in Baltimore is getting the margins are getting thinner,
- 45:47Speaker 6: you know, cool, but it don't.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Send it me the house take thirty And why do
- 45:52Speaker 1: I do that?
- 45:53Speaker 6: There's houses that I won't make thirty K off of
- 45:55Speaker 6: even if I think that, But that gives me enough
- 45:58Speaker 6: cushion where Okay, this house messed up or this. You know,
- 46:02Speaker 6: I have a change order in my contracting work, so
- 46:05Speaker 6: I need to add this or whatever. And now that
- 46:08Speaker 6: thirty K is crunched the twenty five, and it's crunched
- 46:10Speaker 6: the twenty and so it gives me more than enough
- 46:13Speaker 6: cushion as opposed to where some people are trying to
- 46:15Speaker 6: get fifteen K. And then as soon as some bad
- 46:17Speaker 6: things pop up, now they in the red. You know
- 46:20Speaker 6: what I'm saying.
- 46:22Speaker 1: So I do that. Then we'll go through a house
- 46:26Speaker 1: I go through a house.
- 46:26Speaker 6: With the contractor and the and I get an estimate
- 46:30Speaker 6: there right and I know that the contract is going
- 46:32Speaker 6: to be off. You know, I know that they're going
- 46:34Speaker 6: to add some more later on on the back end.
- 46:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 46:37Speaker 6: I've been fortunate to have some great contractors, especially in Maryland,
- 46:41Speaker 6: and Detroit has been hit or miss.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I've had some good ones. I've had some marble ones, right, but.
- 46:49Speaker 6: Finding just getting a ballparking range, because right then and there,
- 46:54Speaker 6: I might be able to be like, Okay, this is
- 46:56Speaker 6: not this doesn't add up right after that, and then
- 47:00Speaker 6: you know, you put in your offer, you probably miss
- 47:02Speaker 6: on half the houses you offer on. Probably really seventy
- 47:05Speaker 6: five percent of the houses I've put offers in on
- 47:07Speaker 6: I haven't gotten. But you just play that game. But again,
- 47:12Speaker 6: for me, it's about I feel like real estate. And
- 47:18Speaker 6: I know I'm obviously in a blessed position to be
- 47:20Speaker 6: able to say this, but I tell this to my family.
- 47:23Speaker 6: I tell this to everyone because I'm getting my family
- 47:25Speaker 6: they invest with me. I feel like real estate is
- 47:28Speaker 6: a great thing to be in as a secondary social income.
- 47:32Speaker 6: Right Like for me, I look at it as like, okay,
- 47:36Speaker 6: like it's a great place to be in when you
- 47:40Speaker 6: know there is a week delay. Or for example, I
- 47:44Speaker 6: was supposed to close on a house. It's sell a
- 47:46Speaker 6: house that we've had on the market for some time.
- 47:48Speaker 6: I was supposed to sell it on May tenth, this
- 47:51Speaker 6: past Friday, and it's gotten pushed. So they did the
- 47:57Speaker 6: appraisal late, and all that stuff is getting pushed. We
- 47:59Speaker 6: just sign have done them to push it to close
- 48:01Speaker 6: before May thirty.
- 48:02Speaker 5: First.
- 48:02Speaker 6: If I needed that money right now, I'll be pissed, right,
- 48:05Speaker 6: I still keep it. Everybody else around me thinks that
- 48:08Speaker 6: I'm pissed, Like, come on, we got tighten this up right, right,
- 48:10Speaker 6: But I'm like, okay, cool, and I'm going to the
- 48:12Speaker 6: other thing. I don't need that right now, you know
- 48:15Speaker 6: what I'm saying. So to keep it as a secondary
- 48:17Speaker 6: source of income allows you to operate in a less
- 48:20Speaker 6: stressful situation. And it also allows you to not take
- 48:25Speaker 6: risks and take chances and force investments if you don't
- 48:29Speaker 6: have to. Because there's a lot of people out here
- 48:30Speaker 6: that's where they get themselves in the best situation, Like
- 48:32Speaker 6: I need this house to work and I need to
- 48:34Speaker 6: flip it now, right.
- 48:35Speaker 7: So what makes you unique is that you're reading blueprints
- 48:38Speaker 7: and you're reading playbooks too, right, And you spoke about
- 48:41Speaker 7: your family and building your team.
- 48:45Speaker 5: But your family's involved, right. Your mom is part of
- 48:47Speaker 5: as an investor with you.
- 48:48Speaker 7: Your wife is reading the charter, and your brother is
- 48:52Speaker 7: I believe the project project management. So were they into
- 48:55Speaker 7: real estate or did you bring them on and educate
- 48:57Speaker 7: you guys learned altogether.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Yeah, brought them on. Brought them on. So I think
- 49:00Speaker 6: for me, one of my biggest goals is to figure out,
- 49:05Speaker 6: not figure out, but encourage other people to create wealth
- 49:10Speaker 6: for themselves. Right, My family is doing well for themselves.
- 49:14Speaker 6: They all have their own hustles. But hey, like I
- 49:16Speaker 6: look at real estate as a way of like, hey
- 49:19Speaker 6: I can Like I tell my friend all the time
- 49:21Speaker 6: he has student loans. He's talking about him, like you
- 49:24Speaker 6: flip a house, right and start putting out chunks on
- 49:27Speaker 6: your mortgage. Right, he already has a job that he's
- 49:30Speaker 6: been paying off. But like I look at it as
- 49:32Speaker 6: like one day I'll just flip a house to pay
- 49:35Speaker 6: for things that I want. Okay, my kid has this
- 49:38Speaker 6: year's tuition. Okay, well, well let's do this house right here,
- 49:41Speaker 6: or we need vacation or I'm flip a house to
- 49:44Speaker 6: pay all of our bills, right, yeah, Like I'm literally like,
- 49:48Speaker 6: that's the way I look at it, right, And that's
- 49:50Speaker 6: a that's a great thing to be able to do
- 49:53Speaker 6: and a great goal to have. But I wanted to
- 49:56Speaker 6: also empower the people around me to be able to
- 50:00Speaker 6: do it themselves, so allowing them to have access to
- 50:04Speaker 6: the investment.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Again, I'm approaching you. I'm doing this house.
- 50:07Speaker 6: You can jump in for whatever.
- 50:09Speaker 7: Yeah, you can jump in if you want the same
- 50:11Speaker 7: lesson that you exactly I'm gonna do this.
- 50:14Speaker 4: You could, but that's like, yeah, one of one of
- 50:17Speaker 4: the like my mentors, uh he uh, he had a
- 50:21Speaker 4: building in Manhattan. He's a real, big time real estate investor, right,
- 50:25Speaker 4: so he's a he's a developer and he had the
- 50:27Speaker 4: building in Manhattan and he he called me. He's like, look, no,
- 50:31Speaker 4: if you want to get in, I'll give you the
- 50:32Speaker 4: friends and family deal. He's like, you know, you know
- 50:35Speaker 4: you can be part of the owner of a building
- 50:36Speaker 4: in Manhattan.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Da da.
- 50:37Speaker 4: But he said, he said, look, he said, I'm giving
- 50:40Speaker 4: you this off. He said, I don't need to give
- 50:42Speaker 4: you this offer, he said, And I'll never call you
- 50:44Speaker 4: by it over again.
- 50:48Speaker 3: If you want any or it, it's up to you.
- 50:50Speaker 3: You know, I'm not gonna beat your door down.
- 50:53Speaker 5: No, that that's all based on facts.
- 50:58Speaker 1: This is happening with without you. And again.
- 51:02Speaker 6: It allows you allows them to have the same experience
- 51:05Speaker 6: that I had. So now they can get their feet wet.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 51:09Speaker 6: I don't care if it's a thousand bucks. I don't
- 51:12Speaker 6: care if it's four thousand bucks. I don't care if
- 51:13Speaker 6: it's twenty thousand bucks. You know what I'm saying, Like,
- 51:16Speaker 6: whatever you want, you just break it down, break the
- 51:18Speaker 6: percentages down. You have equity in this play.
- 51:21Speaker 1: And now now you care.
- 51:23Speaker 6: Now you're interesting.
- 51:24Speaker 5: People are going to care when they're invested in something,
- 51:26Speaker 5: you know what I mean.
- 51:26Speaker 7: Like, even if it's they're making two hundred dollars more,
- 51:29Speaker 7: that's more passive than you had a month before war.
- 51:32Speaker 6: In your checking account that you get so so by
- 51:36Speaker 6: doing that, then it gets them to learn. And then
- 51:38Speaker 6: it also like I'm always thinking about the future, and
- 51:43Speaker 6: the future build right, And so I've invested with players,
- 51:47Speaker 6: and there's a bunch of players who want to invest
- 51:49Speaker 6: and do stuff together, and I've done something with them.
- 51:53Speaker 6: And there's some that I'm like, you know, I just
- 51:54Speaker 6: want to wait until I have my team, really really sure, right,
- 51:59Speaker 6: I'm I'm first to admit that, like one, I'm a perfectionist.
- 52:03Speaker 6: So if it ain't rolling in my version or my
- 52:06Speaker 6: run and perfection, then it ain't ready. But then once
- 52:09Speaker 6: I get it there, then we can rock and roll.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Right. But when you have that access, now I'll shoot
- 52:17Speaker 1: you videos of the.
- 52:19Speaker 6: Befores of what the contractor is telling me, of the
- 52:23Speaker 6: things that I've learned, the things that I've thought about.
- 52:25Speaker 6: But I want you to start looking at stuff the
- 52:28Speaker 6: way I start looking at stuff, right, because in the
- 52:30Speaker 6: long run, again we talk.
- 52:31Speaker 1: About adding value and different ways of add value.
- 52:34Speaker 6: Is you know, one, I don't need your money, but
- 52:36Speaker 6: two I want, in the long run your add value
- 52:39Speaker 6: to me. Because now we're going to start to speak
- 52:43Speaker 6: the same language. Now, if I'm in New Jersey, if
- 52:46Speaker 6: I'm in Baltimore and you move to Florida, or you know,
- 52:50Speaker 6: you get traded and go to California or whatever, now
- 52:53Speaker 6: you're looking at the house the same lens and perspective
- 52:55Speaker 6: that I always had to.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Now you can say a cod like maybe you want
- 52:59Speaker 1: to throw money in is one?
- 53:01Speaker 3: Right?
- 53:01Speaker 7: They branch off and that other factors that people become
- 53:06Speaker 7: less dependent on you because now they have their own knowledge.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Well that so knowledge is power and education is everything
- 53:12Speaker 4: in this world. So that brings us to our next segment,
- 53:15Speaker 4: something that we all have in common. Yeah, education, all right,
- 53:19Speaker 4: So for the last seven we're gonna talk education. And
- 53:23Speaker 4: if anybody's not familiar, this is how this whole thing
- 53:25Speaker 4: started with even the podcast is Troy is an educator
- 53:30Speaker 4: and I'm a financial advisor. So I'll speed up this
- 53:34Speaker 4: story because we've told it a couple of times before.
- 53:35Speaker 4: But he brought me in his classroom before and he
- 53:39Speaker 4: asked me to teach a financial literacy class. So that
- 53:42Speaker 4: financial literacy class turned into he has a program that
- 53:44Speaker 4: he runs every summer, six week program for kids, internships,
- 53:49Speaker 4: a whole bunch of stuff, college tours and everything. They
- 53:52Speaker 4: get paid at the end of the program. So that
- 53:54Speaker 4: turned into me running a financial literacy program for the
- 53:57Speaker 4: kids for the six weeks. Then that's turned into me
- 54:00Speaker 4: actually developing a curriculum, right and now were actually do
- 54:03Speaker 4: it in a couple of other schools outside of our
- 54:06Speaker 4: program that we're doing the summer, And then that turns
- 54:09Speaker 4: into I actually want to write a textbook, right, so
- 54:13Speaker 4: it could be all over and it turned into a
- 54:16Speaker 4: whole bunch of different opportunities. With my brother's keeper of
- 54:18Speaker 4: President Obama's program, we got.
- 54:21Speaker 5: Turned into this podcast.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, so yeah, so it all meshed together. So
- 54:28Speaker 4: as we said earlier in the podcast, Brandon is educated
- 54:31Speaker 4: as well. So he is a professor at the University
- 54:37Speaker 4: of Pennsylvania's business school, which is Wharton, and as I
- 54:40Speaker 4: said before, that's one of the best business schools in
- 54:43Speaker 4: the country. So aside from being football player, aside from
- 54:47Speaker 4: being a real estate investor, aside from working on we
- 54:49Speaker 4: even talk about him working on Wall Street. He also
- 54:51Speaker 4: it's too much to talk about. But he's also a educator.
- 54:55Speaker 4: So financial literacy is something that we're very passionate about.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Can you talk about your class because your class is
- 55:01Speaker 4: interesting it correct me if I'm wrong, but it's called
- 55:02Speaker 4: Inequity and Empowerment in Urban Financial Literacy.
- 55:06Speaker 3: That's the name of it.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Yep, yep, So that's an interesting title, and I kind
- 55:12Speaker 4: of assume I know what that means. But can you
- 55:14Speaker 4: talk about the class? We start's start off the conversation
- 55:16Speaker 4: with the class that.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so.
- 55:20Speaker 6: Technically it's not in wart and it's in the urban school,
- 55:24Speaker 6: Urban Studies school, just to put that out there so
- 55:26Speaker 6: they don't come down. And but it's when I thought
- 55:33Speaker 6: of the class I thought about. I was actually on
- 55:37Speaker 6: the ride through Detroit looking at real estate opportunities with
- 55:42Speaker 6: a couple of players, and one of the players mentioned
- 55:44Speaker 6: in the backseat about, hey, man, I just wish when
- 55:46Speaker 6: I was in college we had a class on that,
- 55:48Speaker 6: you know, talked about taxes and budgeting and houses and
- 55:51Speaker 6: buying your house and all that type of stuff. I'm like,
- 55:53Speaker 6: I mean, that's not just something that athletes need, that's
- 55:56Speaker 6: something that we all need, right, Like, how do you
- 55:59Speaker 6: just and you had the conversation, I was like, how
- 56:02Speaker 6: do you just pick athletes who you think are going
- 56:05Speaker 6: to the league or not? You know, like everybody should
- 56:08Speaker 6: have that. So from there my wheel started running. And again,
- 56:13Speaker 6: like as I said, I'm impulsive. When I get passionate
- 56:15Speaker 6: about something, it's like, how do you make it happen.
- 56:17Speaker 6: So it's been a few years of trying to get
- 56:22Speaker 6: the school to buy in and I was fortunate to
- 56:25Speaker 6: come across my co professor, doctor Brian Peterson, last year
- 56:28Speaker 6: at our Just College five year reunion. I told him
- 56:31Speaker 6: about the idea and then he took it and ran
- 56:33Speaker 6: with it and dealt with the the school pitch. You know,
- 56:39Speaker 6: you know me, I'm just a creative so you know,
- 56:43Speaker 6: I come to you with the idea like, yes, YadA,
- 56:46Speaker 6: I'm willing to put the work in behind it.
- 56:47Speaker 1: But I didn't know you need to.
- 56:49Speaker 6: You know, you need a syllabit, you need a course
- 56:51Speaker 6: outline and all that stuff. So anyway, for me, the
- 56:54Speaker 6: class premise is like, let's talk about all the different
- 56:57Speaker 6: things that you deal with in life that we just
- 57:00Speaker 6: let's just talk about them.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Right. For some reason, we've.
- 57:03Speaker 6: Gone through these schools and gone through all these I've
- 57:06Speaker 6: gone through sixteen years of school myself, and no one
- 57:10Speaker 6: ever taught me how to buy my first house, right,
- 57:12Speaker 6: No one ever taught me about the cost of renting
- 57:15Speaker 6: or how to invest.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 57:18Speaker 6: We have these classes that talk about finance and statistics
- 57:22Speaker 6: and all that stuff. But yeah, but like what's the
- 57:26Speaker 6: real life application?
- 57:27Speaker 7: You know?
- 57:28Speaker 6: And I remember as an intern on Wall Street, I
- 57:31Speaker 6: was like, you know, we had these classes and I think,
- 57:34Speaker 6: you know, I had these econ classes and finance classes,
- 57:38Speaker 6: and I'm like, okay, I should be pretty well prepared
- 57:41Speaker 6: as compared to a student who hasn't had this stuff.
- 57:45Speaker 6: But then when I went into it, I'm like, yeah,
- 57:47Speaker 6: we didn't talk about any basis.
- 57:50Speaker 7: The funny thing about that is like I feel the
- 57:52Speaker 7: same way about education, Like we went to school, right,
- 57:55Speaker 7: and we learned we had to take all these tasks
- 57:58Speaker 7: and pass them to be certified.
- 58:00Speaker 5: And I went to grad school forward.
- 58:01Speaker 7: And I got put in New York City and all
- 58:04Speaker 7: the things that they talk out the window, you're gonna
- 58:07Speaker 7: learn right now right today's yeah, you know what I mean.
- 58:10Speaker 7: And one of the lessons I try to tell up
- 58:13Speaker 7: and coming teachers is like, listen, you're gonna be tested
- 58:15Speaker 7: every day. You got to really put the mindset that
- 58:18Speaker 7: today I'm gonna win this battle because I know I'm
- 58:21Speaker 7: fighting for them, you know what I mean. So like
- 58:23Speaker 7: that's crazy, like you're doing that. And finance too, it's
- 58:25Speaker 7: the same thing, like wait, I went to the school
- 58:27Speaker 7: for all this and I know nothing.
- 58:30Speaker 1: I literally have to start over, right, and so you know,
- 58:36Speaker 1: taking that.
- 58:38Speaker 6: Is like literally the premise of the class. I nicknamed
- 58:40Speaker 6: it life one on one and uh so we talk
- 58:43Speaker 6: about credit. I always felt like too, like I sat
- 58:47Speaker 6: in these classrooms and you know, as a kid who
- 58:52Speaker 6: a kid from Baltimore learning and all that type of stuff.
- 58:55Speaker 6: I've been fortunate enough my parents valued education, so I've
- 58:58Speaker 6: really valued it myself. And still, even though I feel
- 59:03Speaker 6: like I'm a bright individual, I was sit in some
- 59:07Speaker 6: of these classes and I would have to like the
- 59:09Speaker 6: teachers would just talk over my head, however long the
- 59:13Speaker 6: lecture was, and I was like, you know, people would
- 59:17Speaker 6: throw around terms good debt versus bad debt and all
- 59:19Speaker 6: that stuff, and you feel afraid to ask a question, like,
- 59:22Speaker 6: you know, I don't want to see much studio, feel
- 59:24Speaker 6: like everybody else must know, right, you know, like he's
- 59:26Speaker 6: talking like they like maybe I didn't get this in
- 59:29Speaker 6: my high school or something right, And then you know,
- 59:32Speaker 6: so I'd end up youtubing it or figuring it out
- 59:34Speaker 6: on my own or just through life and experience.
- 59:36Speaker 1: And I'm like, it.
- 59:37Speaker 6: Shouldn't be like that, right, Like you're paying all this
- 59:40Speaker 6: money to go to school. We should talk about this.
- 59:42Speaker 6: You should feel comfortable asking this question. So that's the
- 59:45Speaker 6: class we started. We cover everything from like I said,
- 59:48Speaker 6: invest in budgeting, taxes, your gross pay versus your net,
- 59:54Speaker 6: how to buy a house, our very last class we
- 59:56Speaker 6: had as called we called it Financing your Dream Company
- 59:59Speaker 6: an entrepreneur with a ship panel. We end up having
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: a huge My goal, as I told the students, my
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: goal is to make this financial information, financial literacy, all
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: that type of stuffs. Make this information accessible to all
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: for free. And so this class was really a pilot
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: and just a launching point to build and to figure
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: out what works and all of that type of stuff.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: But what we did our second and last.
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: Class, we had a bunch of high school students from
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: Philly come in and then my students taught those students
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: these different we had five different topics, but taught them
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: this stuff.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: And one the reason for that was me.
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: I it's not that I don't care about grades, but
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: I don't care about grades is for two. It's more
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: of like I feel like, if you can teach someone
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: how to teach or no, so not how to teach.
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: I wanted to teach them how to teach this information
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: to other people that they learned. Yeah, so like I
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: want you to be able to share this information with
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: your cousin, your family, your mother, your sister, your brother,
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: and spread this information a similar way that I'm doing it.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: To my family, give your family access to change their
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: own lives, right as opposed to Sadly, what we do
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: in society is we get information, and now it's my information.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: I'm gonna get a leg up on you where it's
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: like I'm you're not my competition. Right. So we had
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: our students teach it to high school students because of one,
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: I figured if you can break it down on a
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: high school level, then you probably have a pretty good
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: understanding of it. But two, it also just is giving
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: us that ripple effect as a classroom. And when I
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: tell you you've got these, one of the biggest things
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: that schools or people push back on is, oh, man,
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: you don't you know people already know this information?
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: And you're like, no, we don't. When did I learn it?
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: When did you teach it to me?
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: Right? Like, if nobody ever taught me I told this
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: to the students, Well, nobody ever told you. If I
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: asked you what two plus two is, you're like, man,
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: that's a stupid question, right, you've learned that. If I
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: asked you like, okay, well, how do you buy your
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: first house? Right?
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Like, what do you need?
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: Well, you probably need it? If I ask you, what's
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: the four to one k? Right?
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Well, you know some people people might be.
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: Like, well you should know that.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: How who taught me?
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: And that's what that's something that because you know, I
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: post videos sometimes and me teaching, and some it's always
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: a couple of comments like, well, financial literacy shouldn't be
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: taught in school.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: We shouldn't rely on schools. People should be teaching at home.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: True of course, but if your parents aren't prepared to
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: teach you, then what about those kids? And that's the
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: vast majority of kids, right, So it's like, okay, well, yeah,
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: of course everything should be taught at home. But if
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: that's the case, what's the point of even going to
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: school to teach our kids everything at.
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: Like working in the education system, right, this is like
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: my seventeenth year in education. But that was part of
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: the reason when I was like, shoty, I'm like, look,
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: I need your help, Like you're a financial advisor, I
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: need your help, Like I know that these kids aren't learning,
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: and like I was doing a disservice. So I'm like,
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: all right, well I have six weeks to help these kids, right,
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: And I was like, listen, I need your help. Come
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: in and just teach these kids these lessons, and it
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: was like when we started seeing the return on it
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: every year, it was like, oh, this is amazing.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: So like being in the system and no one is
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: a disservice, like we got to give back. So like
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: you going back to Philly to take kids, Like that's dope, right,
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: and you're doing it at the college level, right, And
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: our program is you know, from high school kids getting
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: getting ready for college, but also this year we'll launching
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: on for elementary school kids, right because the earlier they
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: get the knowledge.
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: Now their parents can learn, and these kids are learning,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: so they prepared. By the time we get to high school,
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: they're going to be advanced.
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: Right, right, So we're just trying to start earlier and earlier, right,
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: and we need more people doing.
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: That, right.
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: So that's what drew us, like drew me for sure,
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: Like five thirty in the morning, I'm reading, I'm like, oh,
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: I got to meet this guy because he's on the
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: same paths dope.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: And then also that my Lexcelna question leads right into
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: as far as getting back right, we spoke about that
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: off camp a little bit. Can you talk about that
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: as far as like the importance of that and why
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: because a lot of times people don't like you said.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: I think I read a book one time that we
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: operate from an attitude of scarcity instead of abundance, meaning
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: that it's like, Okay, if me and you from the
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: same neighborhood you make it to the league, I'm gonna
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: be depressed because I'm like, the percentage of somebody making
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: it is like one out of one hundred.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Now you made it, So now my percentage.
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: Is like, I'm done.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: I can't make it.
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: Statistically, It's like it's not a saying like yo, I'm
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: gonna use you as an example that I can make it.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: So we look at that and it carries over them
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: a lot of things like Okay, I got a million dollars.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: I can't teach somebody else how to make a million
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: dollars because I've already beat the odds. So I can't
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: diminish my eyes by trying to spread the wealth.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: It's said, So yeah, my wife and I always start
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: this foundation called Beyond the Basics.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Scene is right here.
- 1:04:52Speaker 6: We throw football camps, we take kids on shopping, screeze
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: for Christmas, feed single parents Thanksgiving.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I think that you know, that's just our heart and
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: what we feel called to do.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: And that's actually like the best part of everything that
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: I do. I feel like when it talks when you
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: talk about giving back. Shared this with the students as well.
- 1:05:17Speaker 6: I share this with people. I think that there's a
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: lot of people in this world. This is the way
- 1:05:21Speaker 6: I think of my life and whether I'm right wrong,
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: and whatever I'm doing, I'm sharing it and I'm letting
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: you know that. Hey, like I don't have all the answers,
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: Like I told my students that the first day, I
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: don't have all the answers, right, Like, there's there's experts
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: for all of this information. That's the reason why you
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: hire an accountant. That's the reason why you're hiring an
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: investment an advisor, a financial advisor. That's the reason why
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: you hire a credit repair specialist to handle these different
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: tranches of your life, the reason why you hire a realtor. Like,
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: I don't have all this information, but I will get
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: the people in front of you. I have a little
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: bit about all this stuff, and anything I don't know,
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: we'll learn it on them the fly, right, Like, that's
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: cool with me. I'll take that humble approach to teaching
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: and to being a vessel. But what I always tell
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: people is there's people who write these Tell All books.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: You know, they're fifty some years old. Right, this is
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: how I mask my wealth and all that type of stuff.
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: And there's one there's a bunch of young kids who
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: was reading that, well, I just read such and such book,
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: and you know, now I'm gonna try to do it
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: like this and this and this, right, which is great.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: You know, you're sharing that wealth of knowledge. I always
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: think that.
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: Those the person who wrote the book, the author's peers
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: at that age group, we are probably looking at this dude,
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: like a dude or woman, like why then you just
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: share this stuff while you were doing it, right, Like
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: why don't you tell me while you were taking these risks,
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: so that now we can all be writing I Tell
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: All books. We can all be on these shots, we
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: can all be on this stuff, right. And that's what
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: I'm like, all right, like, let's just let's just share
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: as we go, right. And for me, it's about taking
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: a humble approach, or making the information humble in the
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: sense of like it's not overwhelming, it's not like there's
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: certain things that are complex, you know, more complex than others.
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: But all of this stuff is once you take some
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: time and dive into it, you're just like what this is?
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: You know, this can be.
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: Easy, And I think that sadly, a lot of people
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: trying to teach or a lot of people trying to
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: and you know, we're not even talking about specifically giving back,
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: but I look at the professor stuff as one of
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: my versions of giving back. Absolutely education and a lot
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: of people trying to teach or or give information they
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: want you to think that what they do is rockets.
- 1:07:47Speaker 7: You know how we can tell is giving back because
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: you're doing it right. Those kids are being inspired and
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: you'll never know the impact.
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: But there are a bunch of athletes who are looking
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: at you like wow, like I could do that.
- 1:07:59Speaker 7: I wish I could do that right, and their reason
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: out like when we posted you, like a bunch of
- 1:08:03Speaker 7: athletes were like, hey.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: Well we have a lot of shout out to the
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: NFL For some reason, I don't know, but like half
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: of the NFL follows us right our page. So we're
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: getting more basketball players shout to Al Harrington, shout out
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: to a couple of other league guys in the League.
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: But I'm proud of the NFL guys because they're really
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: taking financial literacy.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: Serious and they I don't think it's a coincidence.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: And what you said was key as far as to
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: make the information understandable to the people. And I think
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: that's one of the driving forces behind our podcast, is
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: that our people don't really want to read Barons and
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: even I don't really want to read Baron. I'm fall
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: asleep when I'm reading there, you know what I mean.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: It's like.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: But the information that we deliver, they know that it's
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: like a conversation they can have in a barbershop, but
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: these conversations aren't being had at the barbershop. So now
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: they can tune in once a week and they can
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: check it out and they and the good thing about
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: our platform is that everybody that we are bringing in
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: are from different walks of life, different areas, but the
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: one common that it is that they all are willing
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: to share time and give out free game. And that's
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: what you just did and it's commendable. So first and foremost,
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: we want to thank you for coming, and can you
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: tell people how to contact you and the initiatives your
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: camp all that all that information.
- 1:09:16Speaker 6: Yeah man, I'll keep it keep it short. So you
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: can reach out to me at at B. Cooke fifty
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: one b C O P E five one on Instagram.
- 1:09:24Speaker 6: I also have a website www dot bcopeland dot com.
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: There's a contact section right there. It'll get directly to me.
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: We have a football camp coming up this summer in Baltimore.
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: Free Football Camp for the youth. Will probably have about
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: five hundred kids this year, which is crazy to see
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: the grow. Our camp is older than is longer than
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: the average NFL lifespan right now, so we're going in
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: the year four, which is crazy. But we do a
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: lot of different we Our camp is literally not about football.
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: We we have a thousand book bags that the kids
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: put together and a thousand hygien kids that the kids
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: put together and they distribute out to their own city.
- 1:10:02Speaker 6: Right so now we're encouraging them to get back early
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: and understanding that it's not just writing a check, it's
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: not about that, it's about time, it's about efforts, about
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: passion and uh and yeah man, we just continue to
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: build this empire, continue to try to get out this
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: financial literacy and fo along with you all and help change.
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: The world, collaboration is better than competition, as my man
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: Max the Mad, So you know, that's that's what we're doing.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: That's another thing that we want to show as well,
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: as far as we don't have to be in competition
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: with each other, you can work with each It's actually
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: more beneficial to work with somebody.
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: And it's fun.
- 1:10:36Speaker 7: Man, it's fun because like every time we sit down
- 1:10:38Speaker 7: with the guests, like we're learning to we learned something
- 1:10:40Speaker 7: like we're learning as you speak, and when we listen back,
- 1:10:43Speaker 7: we're like, wow, that's a gem. I hope everybody heard
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: that on because that's what we used to do it
- 1:10:47Speaker 7: like lyrics, Like we would listen to it and I'm like, yo,
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: you heard what he said.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: And then we realized that every yeah, we want that,
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: Like everybody didn't hear it the same way.
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: And it was like, all right, well that's what we're
- 1:10:56Speaker 7: going to do the finance like we're gonna wait, I
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: don't think they're hearing it the same so let's explain it, right,
- 1:11:00Speaker 7: you know what I mean?
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: He coded, Yeah, you're doing a great job of taking
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: the time to do that, right. A lot of people
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: they just spit it at you.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: If you pick it up.
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: You pick it up.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: If you didn't, it's on you.
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: And I think that you guys are doing an amazing
- 1:11:14Speaker 6: job of like like you said, taking the time to
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: decode it, taking the time to humble it, and uh,
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: you know, egos out the out the door, creating that
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: non judgmental zone. It's crucial so that we can have
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: these conversations because just by having a conversation, you end
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: up learning. You know, you might even go in the conversation.
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: I have conversations with people about finance now and you're
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: not even there was no intent in the conbo. We
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: weren't talking, we weren't supposed to be talking about real estate.
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: Were just talking about mindset, and somehow it never leads
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: us to one of us learning something that might save
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: us some money, save us some interest on the Morgans
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: or something like that. So that's a beautiful thing. And
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: to continue to create that environment, y'all are y'all are
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: leading away?
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: So I appreciate.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Patreon.
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: Yeah, man, so Patreon it is doing pretty well. You know,
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: we explain it every episode.
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: It's a way to financially support the podcast so that
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: we could come to your city or do things in
- 1:12:13Speaker 7: our city.
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: You know that can uplift people and give them more information.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: You know, we have five different tiers.
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: You can join at any tiers starts like two dollars
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: if you like, for just general things, and then as
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: you you add more to the tears, you get more things.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: So we got some new members.

- 1:12:43Speaker 7: on our website or a leisure dot com. You know,
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: like I said, season two, we got some new new
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: things coming out, so be on the lookout for that reliability.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Yeah, civilized really share.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: That's the slogan that we're running with.
- 1:12:57Speaker 7: I got the podcast t shirt on. It's funny like
- 1:13:00Speaker 7: every like we walk out and people are looking they're like, wait,
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: is that you good?
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: Sure?
- 1:13:05Speaker 7: And you know it's a conversation starter, like we know
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: that people are looking at what we're wearing all the time.
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: That's our culture.
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: Like we're gonna watch to see what you have on
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: first and then we'll start a conversation after that, so
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: we might as well give them a good message.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: So before we leave, my book tip of the week is,
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: I'm currently so all right. Valencia is the teacher that
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: we had on She Let the Cat Out to Day.
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: I don't actually read these books. I listen to audiobooks,
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: say so. My audiobook that I'm listening to right now
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: is called The Smartest Guys in the Room. It's about
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: the end Run debacle scandal. So if you're into that
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: kind of thing, I highly recommend it this. It's interesting,
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: it's entertaining, and it talks about how the financial system
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: can go wrong and how greed can lead to very
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: bad things.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: So that is my book tip.
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: Let me can I give him a quote? Because I
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: heard Brandon said and I was like, oh man, I
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: got give them this line. So I'm a quote she
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: lose from the lock Channel and I want full shot
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: out the younkers. But he said, plan for your future
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: because you're going to be older a lot longer than you're.
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: Gonna be younger.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: And I was like, money power, respect, money.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: Power respect, right, because that's important, right, Like how much
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: time do you have to be young? Like I think
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: you said that, like at twenty five, are you young?
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: Right? But you still got fifty plus years.
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: You know, God blessed to be a functioning person in life,
- 1:14:22Speaker 7: So you're gonna be older a lot longer you're.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: Gonna be younger, So you got to plan accordingly.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Man plan accordingly. That's a fact. So once again, thank
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: you guys for rocking with us. We'll see you next week. Piece.
