- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:49Moderate winds are holding steady across the islands, with scattered showers hitting windward areas and the mountains, mostly at night and early morning. Leeward beaches stay mostly dry through the weekend — that's your window for snorkeling and beach time. East-facing shores will stay rough and choppy from the wind, so plan around the protected leeward side if you're swimming.
- 2:08Surf is small to tiny overall. Oʻahu's south shore is running 4.2 feet — moderate, with watch-outs for shore break and rip currents. The Big Island's Hapuna Beach is nearly glass-calm at 1.4 feet, perfect for kids and snorkelers. Maui's Kāʻanapali is 3.1 feet and comfortable. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is running 5.9 feet — moderate again, so same caution there. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect around Maui and the Big Island through tomorrow evening.
- 2:31Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several sections closed — the Kahuku Unit Roads, the Kīpukapuaulu Trail due to hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is under replacement. Kīlauea remains at Advisory alert level. Before you visit, check current conditions on the park's site.
- 2:45Our lighthouse guide just went up on the site. It covers all the lighthouses you can actually visit across the islands — Kīlauea on Kauaʻi, Makapuʻu and Diamond Head on Oʻahu, Kumukahi on the Big Island, and what to expect on Maui. Lighthouse hunting pairs well with bigger island itineraries, and the guide walks through what you'll find at each one: access times, what the views actually look like, whether it's a quick stop or a longer hike.
- 3:07Monday and Wednesday bring widespread rain across all islands as two batches of moist air move in with the trades, so plan indoor backup activities for those days.
- 3:15If you're headed to a leeward beach today, grab our snorkeling guides for whichever island you're heading to. Catch you tomorrow.
