- 1:26Speaker 1: all time, mister Tony Dorset. Welcome to the pod. So
- 1:32Speaker 1: I think you want to dress? I want to. I
- 1:35Speaker 1: didn't want to bring this up early, but we gotta
- 1:36Speaker 1: dressed the elephant in the room, all right. So, mister Tony, So,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I've grown up knowing you so much and revered you
- 1:44Speaker 1: in high, high regards because my mom, all right, my
- 1:47Speaker 1: mom and dad have been married forty some years, raised
- 1:50Speaker 1: me my love my mom and death. But she has
- 1:53Speaker 1: always told me since I was a little kid, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: I hope I embarrass you right here. It's two guys.
- 1:57Speaker 1: She would leave my dad for number one Kareem Abdul
- 2:00Speaker 1: at your bar and number two Tony Dorset. So now
- 2:04Speaker 1: getting to meet you finally, it isn't honor you are
- 2:07Speaker 1: the man, y'all. Y'all, y'all kind of looking like look
- 2:16Speaker 1: y'all got to say it's ever hair. Yeah, you know
- 2:19Speaker 1: what I'm saying you just got to bed. I'm not,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but it is. It's an awesome day. It is awesome
- 2:28Speaker 1: to try to put that out here. You say, I
- 2:30Speaker 1: got to meet you. So I'm gonna tell my mom
- 2:32Speaker 1: lay oh like and she'll be like, did you take
- 2:35Speaker 1: a picture to get something sign? I'm like, I don't
- 2:36Speaker 1: love why, but it's good. It's great. It's great to
- 2:38Speaker 1: meet your great ham. You're all of famer and you've
- 2:41Speaker 1: been retired for a while, and this podcast is really
- 2:43Speaker 1: about former players, kind of their second acts and kind
- 2:46Speaker 1: of what they're doing right now. So you've been retired
- 2:49Speaker 1: for a minute. Can I ask what have you been
- 2:51Speaker 1: up to lately kind of since the retirement. Take care
- 2:55Speaker 1: of my grandchildren? Okay, I'm doing mother boys. I got
- 3:00Speaker 1: my son has as a little boy, and my daughter
- 3:03Speaker 1: has a little boy okay, okay, and one of them Hawk,
- 3:06Speaker 1: My nickname is Hawk okay. And my son's name his
- 3:09Speaker 1: his his boy hockey and name and so uh, I
- 3:13Speaker 1: go with him and you know, he sports and I
- 3:16Speaker 1: try to keep him the curious and doing what and
- 3:18Speaker 1: do all these things. And then my daughter has a
- 3:21Speaker 1: little Drew. Drew is my middle name, so little little
- 3:26Speaker 1: Drew's baby, Drew, he's Drew's baby. He's one years old.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But but he just man, I just I have I
- 3:31Speaker 1: have so much joy. But those boys come around me. Man,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I just I feel like a little kid and I
- 3:36Speaker 1: just grew out and play with and hell good. So
- 3:38Speaker 1: this kind of makes you feel good though, like that
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know your kids, they they took your name and
- 3:42Speaker 1: they naming their kids out do like that legacy kind
- 3:45Speaker 1: of still right right carries on. Man, it's a good feeling,
- 3:48Speaker 1: you know. And it's and it's like, you know, with
- 3:51Speaker 1: my son decided to do this, you know name the
- 3:54Speaker 1: name is Hockey, and I'm like, why what you're doing?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Then you come around but heah, man get Hockey. Man.
- 4:01Speaker 1: He's just he's just a wonderful kid. I mean he's
- 4:03Speaker 1: good with school and all that stuff. And and my
- 4:07Speaker 1: my other grand should I mean Drew baby, Threw I
- 4:11Speaker 1: called it Drew baby, and he's just Papa, Papa, Papa.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He just loved me. Man, I just love it. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: just love with my grandchild. I think there's no greater
- 4:20Speaker 1: love than a grandparent with a grandchild. And I see
- 4:24Speaker 1: that with my parents. My parents are watching my kids
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I'm here right now with my wife, and it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: really funny because my dad was so hard on me,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, I see him rolling on
- 4:33Speaker 1: the ground with my kids. I'm like, you never rolled
- 4:36Speaker 1: on the ground with me. Never, not one time. I
- 4:38Speaker 1: see my mom throw a football with my daughter and
- 4:41Speaker 1: I was like, I've known you my whole life. You've
- 4:44Speaker 1: never throw me a path like never? Never? One time?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Did you? Did you do these things for grandkids? Oh? Yeah, baby,
- 4:49Speaker 1: know what she did? And then missing? They're missing you.
- 4:53Speaker 1: You know he's missing. You didn't get a chance to
- 4:55Speaker 1: do it with you, But now they can do it
- 4:56Speaker 1: with they grandchild. You don't want to make sure they
- 4:59Speaker 1: get that point being before things changed for them. But
- 5:02Speaker 1: let's let's say that's a great thing, man, I tell you.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But then what a good thing about it all? Le
- 5:07Speaker 1: send them all? Yeah that's yeah, that's that's what my
- 5:16Speaker 1: dad said. So I don't know if you would watched
- 5:18Speaker 1: the honor show here today, They just inducted the newest
- 5:21Speaker 1: members of the INFA Hall of Fame. Um, what did
- 5:25Speaker 1: you think about the class? They inducted? U Zach Thomas,
- 5:29Speaker 1: DeMarcus Ware andree Reevers Jodelnde Barber, Joe Joe Thomas. Yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's a good class of players,
- 5:41Speaker 1: done well for themselves and years if they've played. I'm
- 5:44Speaker 1: not really familiar with them a whole lot of the
- 5:46Speaker 1: guys because you know, when when I moved away from football,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I kin moved away. They should that then. But I
- 5:52Speaker 1: still love the game. I love watching guys play. I
- 5:54Speaker 1: love them. Now do you go to the ceremony that
- 5:57Speaker 1: they have in canon every year or so often? Yeah?
- 6:00Speaker 1: You get it, man, I love putting on that, you
- 6:03Speaker 1: know jacket. That was gonna be the question. So how
- 6:06Speaker 1: often do you wear your gold jacket? Like, do you
- 6:09Speaker 1: ever just catch yourself in the morning, get me some
- 6:11Speaker 1: coffee and I'm just gonna go ahead, just put on
- 6:14Speaker 1: this thing and just got to sit here and watch
- 6:15Speaker 1: some TV yourself. You have, don't wear it out, man,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it's the household. Oh yeah, I see it, because that
- 6:25Speaker 1: is awesome, you know, jacket man, gonna go very well
- 6:29Speaker 1: with me, the cool man. Have you ever still anything
- 6:32Speaker 1: on the coach? How many goldso you get? Give you
- 6:36Speaker 1: You'll give you one if you if you that's a
- 6:38Speaker 1: great question. If you you want to get what you
- 6:40Speaker 1: get the one coach, but they will duplicate one before
- 6:43Speaker 1: you get if something happens to the one that you
- 6:45Speaker 1: have got you all right, So so give me a
- 6:48Speaker 1: story of what happened to the first time you messed
- 6:50Speaker 1: up your jacket probably scared you, or the first time
- 6:53Speaker 1: you try to stain on it or something. Oh I
- 6:56Speaker 1: got real man, I was. I was like one of
- 7:00Speaker 1: those things. I want fight realism on my jacket, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 1: because because I'm like, man, I didn't have a dream.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I didn't even know about the Hall of Fame. But
- 7:14Speaker 1: I the kid growing up. Man, I was like, oh man,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, you mess up my jacket? Man? You
- 7:19Speaker 1: may go boy, yeah, man, But it's it's intergreating for
- 7:24Speaker 1: guys to be involved. So one group of guys, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: one one guy in particular, who, as I've read and
- 7:31Speaker 1: read more about you and you have the special relationships
- 7:33Speaker 1: are over him and yeah, I know that's you. Guys.
- 7:37Speaker 1: He claims you as one of his heroes, his football
- 7:40Speaker 1: hero specifically. Could you maybe give us a little bit
- 7:43Speaker 1: of insight on how that relationship for him, because it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: not like nowadays where guys have social media, so they're
- 7:49Speaker 1: friends and they get recruited all together. How did that
- 7:51Speaker 1: relationship for him? And then how did that relationship grow
- 7:54Speaker 1: from there? But I think about it is h I've
- 7:58Speaker 1: always wound to be a bigger run. I wanted to
- 8:01Speaker 1: be a beaten back man. And and when Earl came,
- 8:04Speaker 1: because you know, obviously you go before the year Jimber,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I didn't. I wanted to wear all that cop I
- 8:10Speaker 1: didn't see CC, but I seen Earl. Man. I used
- 8:13Speaker 1: to watch you play against the Stews. And I grew
- 8:17Speaker 1: up in Pittsburgh area, Yeah, and the still curtain. Man
- 8:20Speaker 1: was just I was just unbelievable. And Earl was just
- 8:23Speaker 1: like I was like, man, how is it run through
- 8:25Speaker 1: these guys like this? How does he do with this?
- 8:28Speaker 1: I said, tell her? I said Earth. I said, I see,
- 8:30Speaker 1: let's say Earth. And why don't you that one guy
- 8:33Speaker 1: tackled you sometimes? I said, man, I know you think
- 8:35Speaker 1: this is gonna last? Man, I said, Man, you that
- 8:37Speaker 1: like King Colin out there just guys everything. But man,
- 8:42Speaker 1: that's it's a great gather. So let's talk about you
- 8:46Speaker 1: grew up in the still curtain, are right? You're from
- 8:48Speaker 1: you from Pennsylvania and uh, hope on pronounces right, Aliquippa.
- 8:52Speaker 1: That's it, quick the quick, So I did it? Ain't
- 8:58Speaker 1: like eight thousand people. It's a super right, super small town.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Y'all got some dolls that coming out of all equippent.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So is yourself your nephew that I didn't know, tyle long?
- 9:14Speaker 1: And then you got the real reeves all in the
- 9:18Speaker 1: excuse me, all in the hall of fame. My dick
- 9:22Speaker 1: is round. We got four. Y'all got four. Y'all got
- 9:27Speaker 1: four Hall of Famers in the town of like eight thousands. Yeah, yeah, small,
- 9:33Speaker 1: drive right through it, like through you go. What is that?
- 9:37Speaker 1: You got one red lay? Oh my? How much pride
- 9:39Speaker 1: do you guys taking that knowing that you guys have
- 9:41Speaker 1: four gold jackets. We town, we don't even have that
- 9:46Speaker 1: many people that's made through the NFL. Yeah, you've got
- 9:48Speaker 1: even closer. How do you how much pride are you
- 9:51Speaker 1: taking that knowing that your hometown has produced four Golden Helpers.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's it's the whole county. I like to see it.
- 9:59Speaker 1: You know, we put we played there and uh what
- 10:03Speaker 1: what what be the country? Be the county? And you
- 10:06Speaker 1: know we had a lot of great athletes, not just
- 10:08Speaker 1: in football, but basketball, baseball, wrestling, all of it, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: and we took a lot of pride and from the
- 10:14Speaker 1: fact that saying, yeah, you know everybody's talking about what
- 10:17Speaker 1: this is what football country? This is that, and this
- 10:19Speaker 1: is that, And when you come to out of the fotball, man,
- 10:22Speaker 1: it's a steel medal. Yeah usually Still you know, man,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you see still you know it's it's nothing like that, Like,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I mean, how do you guys come out? How do
- 10:30Speaker 1: you think all this many football players out here? But
- 10:32Speaker 1: what it's not. You don't have a whole lot of
- 10:35Speaker 1: football fields, you don't have a whole lot of students
- 10:38Speaker 1: and stuff going into school. But you know, it was
- 10:40Speaker 1: just guy just took a lot of pride in themselves
- 10:43Speaker 1: and we we usul wished to always say, man, you
- 10:45Speaker 1: know we we can stand up against anybody. Oh yeah,
- 10:50Speaker 1: clearly clearly famous. Yeah, nobody else can say that. So
- 10:54Speaker 1: I want to know this one more thing too, is uh,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I know the game has changed. Football is not what
- 11:00Speaker 1: it was when you were playing, nor was it when
- 11:02Speaker 1: we were playing not too long ago. And the product
- 11:05Speaker 1: of football now do you still enjoy watching it? How
- 11:08Speaker 1: what is your love factor on the scale or so
- 11:10Speaker 1: whatever that is a football I'm a football guy. I
- 11:16Speaker 1: you know, it's it's kind of been pempered. Seems like man,
- 11:22Speaker 1: you know, it's like, you know, it's like man begging
- 11:24Speaker 1: the days. Man. I was like, man, the way the
- 11:26Speaker 1: boys was hitting people, yeah, and doing things that they do.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I mean, but there's a lot of talent out there,
- 11:31Speaker 1: but they just and it probably made it a little more,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I say, say for the guys, you know, because we
- 11:37Speaker 1: came back or they would hit you and they would
- 11:40Speaker 1: keep on hitting. You were talking about your grandson loving
- 11:42Speaker 1: sports and seven on seven has been a really big
- 11:46Speaker 1: push to like kind of take the ease off of
- 11:49Speaker 1: the contact with sports and football. Would you encourage your
- 11:52Speaker 1: grandson to go to play football or want to do
- 11:56Speaker 1: seven on seven instead of playing football with pads? Early? Man,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I hadn't debate all the time at all, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 1: doing I know, you know, I wanted them to play
- 12:07Speaker 1: the game that we played, and that's the way I
- 12:10Speaker 1: can only visualize football. We played. Football is physical, aggressive,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you know, I want to see that. I don't want
- 12:17Speaker 1: to take that away from it. You know, I think
- 12:19Speaker 1: they've done a good job with the referee, but they
- 12:23Speaker 1: took a lot of some of the dirtiness. You want
- 12:27Speaker 1: to say, yeah, and it made it safer. And I
- 12:29Speaker 1: think the game's contact. Man, you want to play people football,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you gotta you have to take a little contact. Dukes
- 12:39Speaker 1: later first African American named to the College Football Paul
- 12:44Speaker 1: of Fame. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month
- 12:48Speaker 1: across the league, we share the accomplishments of the past,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and President Dukes later overcame racial bias to earn selections
- 12:58Speaker 1: to both the college and Pro football hauls of Fame.
- 13:03Speaker 1: The tackle from Iowa was a three time All Big
- 13:07Speaker 1: Ten selection and All American and the first African American
- 13:12Speaker 1: named to the College Football Hall of Fame. In the
- 13:16Speaker 1: Pro rings, Slater was a five time first team All Pro.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Only the errors prevented discrimination checked him from being named
- 13:25Speaker 1: to the NFL's All Decade Team of the nineteen twenties. However,
- 13:31Speaker 1: he would earn his due in twenty twenty when he
- 13:34Speaker 1: was named to the centennial class of the Pro Football
- 13:37Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. So, Rome, we saw you with Earl
- 13:56Speaker 1: Earl Campbell. You're saying you were making your way through
- 13:58Speaker 1: radio row. I looked on. I was gonna answer, I've
- 14:01Speaker 1: seen you before. I know your size, your frame, little guy.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I did not know that I was man, not as
- 14:08Speaker 1: big as I thought. I thought it was so much
- 14:10Speaker 1: bigger there. Everybody, even when I when I was playing,
- 14:15Speaker 1: when they would see me in the off season, they're
- 14:18Speaker 1: like my jumping man, they didn't know I was as
- 14:22Speaker 1: small as I was. But what I did was see
- 14:25Speaker 1: I said, I had extra large shoulder pads. I had
- 14:29Speaker 1: girdle pads, have real pass, have large stop pass. I
- 14:33Speaker 1: had four months in my knee, pass my food bed,
- 14:37Speaker 1: run springs. Just as we tell we played, we get
- 14:39Speaker 1: a playa man. You know, ugly this chest. I said, yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 1: what I don't give it. There, ain't remit over there
- 14:51Speaker 1: trying to take me out of this. I said, I
- 14:53Speaker 1: got to pass it up. Bro. I mean you feel
- 14:55Speaker 1: like it means you think it slowed you down to
- 14:57Speaker 1: having all that extra of course, when you're scared, when
- 15:01Speaker 1: you running scared, hey there, you much don't show you down.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So so talking about not stowing you down number one,
- 15:09Speaker 1: Just what you just said, I mean, it's amazing that
- 15:11Speaker 1: a fullback tails a running back. Bro. You dressed ugly.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I got that. Everybody just stood on that. I'm just
- 15:19Speaker 1: saying about me, y'all said, my star was black. It
- 15:21Speaker 1: was terrible. We had a big biotic elbow braid you
- 15:24Speaker 1: know it snack. Guess what I didn't get a damn yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you give a damn home. And like, I know, if
- 15:31Speaker 1: you know that actually didn't slow you down? Of course,
- 15:33Speaker 1: not tell me about this. How does it feel your
- 15:36Speaker 1: record ninety nine yard run? It can never be broken,
- 15:40Speaker 1: It can only be tied, which you has been tied before.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And I watched your highlight and I watched the run
- 15:45Speaker 1: number one? Is that your favorite run of all time?
- 15:48Speaker 1: And how much credit do you give your wide receiver
- 15:50Speaker 1: that was that Drew forgetting that blocked down there? And
- 15:53Speaker 1: kind of said it for you? Or did you? I
- 15:54Speaker 1: ain't really need him because he really did he be
- 15:56Speaker 1: really didn't touch you, right. I used to tell about
- 16:01Speaker 1: why receivers. I said, look, you don't have to knock
- 16:04Speaker 1: him down. Get in the way and I'll do the rest.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'll make him. I'll make him get wait why I
- 16:10Speaker 1: want him to be and you can get in his
- 16:12Speaker 1: weight and then it's old, you know. But Drew and
- 16:15Speaker 1: drew every long run that I have, Drew Pierson was
- 16:20Speaker 1: part of it. He was always one one of the
- 16:23Speaker 1: guys that's just getting in the way. I just get
- 16:25Speaker 1: it in a way, bro, I'm going from there. And
- 16:28Speaker 1: that play, it was just a simple die player. You
- 16:30Speaker 1: don't have to tell about the specifics of the play.
- 16:32Speaker 1: But it wasn't a fantasy play. Call now and we
- 16:36Speaker 1: you know, we only ten minute on the field. I
- 16:39Speaker 1: didn't know that either. I don't something if if, if
- 16:45Speaker 1: we had never met on the field, it would have
- 16:47Speaker 1: been our full back Ron Springs running the play. And
- 16:51Speaker 1: I just always did run. You think you could win
- 16:53Speaker 1: ninety nine yards? Man, come on back, give it the carture. Man.
- 16:57Speaker 1: You know you couldn't run that in that So he
- 16:58Speaker 1: turns to you don't want to He knew he wasn't in.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I mean, obviously you knew he wasn't there, right, So well,
- 17:03Speaker 1: y'all didn't want to call like a tom, but I
- 17:05Speaker 1: think it was he was the one that muff the
- 17:09Speaker 1: kick off, right, the one east, y'all whatever, And so
- 17:13Speaker 1: he ran off the field. And then when he heard
- 17:17Speaker 1: the play. I heard the play. I heard the play
- 17:19Speaker 1: being called, so we could run that with single back
- 17:23Speaker 1: fromish or I formix right, So Roll thought he heard
- 17:27Speaker 1: single back formation was jayhawk is the formation we called.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And so he stayed on the sideline and all the
- 17:37Speaker 1: guys are telling them. I said, get out. Think you
- 17:39Speaker 1: gotta run the play. You gotta run the play. A
- 17:41Speaker 1: Rollin's response to all that was like, man, you gotta
- 17:45Speaker 1: be crazy. He said, if I run out on that
- 17:48Speaker 1: field and we get a punality on the one each other,
- 17:51Speaker 1: he said, Tom, now you go. Couldn't be right spot
- 17:54Speaker 1: as he said. You know, he said he had to
- 17:57Speaker 1: And I didn't know what they said that. I thought
- 17:59Speaker 1: you had to have. You never met on the field,
- 18:02Speaker 1: so he had he had to wear with all to
- 18:03Speaker 1: understand that we can un play with ten. He said,
- 18:07Speaker 1: don't matter, and I was saying, okay, man, I'm glad
- 18:10Speaker 1: you did. I thought you would have got a five
- 18:12Speaker 1: fold ten. I didn't know that. No, you can't play
- 18:15Speaker 1: with ten. You just can't play with twelve. I think
- 18:17Speaker 1: that that's the rule. You can play with ten now.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Now one thing I think is a little bit special. Um, well,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I know it's special, and I didn't know it was
- 18:25Speaker 1: such a stat And that's your um your heisman to
- 18:29Speaker 1: haul community and or break rivers on your shirt right now?
- 18:32Speaker 1: Eight stage and uh could you tell me what's the
- 18:35Speaker 1: and um, what's been the most important thing for you
- 18:38Speaker 1: to make sure you stick around the game. You're around it,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and you also have this around amongst all these legends,
- 18:44Speaker 1: a small group of legends inside of all these grades,
- 18:49Speaker 1: with these uh the guys that have won a Heisman
- 18:52Speaker 1: and are in the Hall of Fame. It's ten of
- 18:54Speaker 1: you guys total throughout all of the football grades. It
- 18:59Speaker 1: is amazing here. How does that make you feel? Could
- 19:01Speaker 1: you just break all this down? And you're talking about
- 19:03Speaker 1: earlier likely? Yeah, yeah, you know you keep saying you
- 19:08Speaker 1: see said the word it makes you feel great. I say,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I would like all the great players, gel says George
- 19:15Speaker 1: Jim Brown. You can go all and on and on
- 19:17Speaker 1: and on about all these great players, man, quarterbacks, you
- 19:21Speaker 1: running backs, most most running backs, and it's like I'm like, wow,
- 19:26Speaker 1: that's all I said, all these big players. But I mean, sweetness,
- 19:31Speaker 1: well the pain come on, didn't get a high? Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 1: just like I would saying. Now right there, I say, man, God,
- 19:39Speaker 1: I said, when you when you look at it, when
- 19:41Speaker 1: you think about it, you said, damn, you know because
- 19:45Speaker 1: you did sometimes especially Yeah. Yeah, so you guys are
- 19:49Speaker 1: doing a perfect ten documentary and it's through the NFL
- 19:53Speaker 1: Films production about you ten guys who have won the
- 19:58Speaker 1: Heisman and all show in the Hall of Fame. Now,
- 20:02Speaker 1: um it airs you out the month of February on
- 20:05Speaker 1: the FS one. We're gonna make sure everybody tunes in
- 20:07Speaker 1: for that support these great gentlemen who have been stewards
- 20:09Speaker 1: of the game that we've all grown up watching and
- 20:12Speaker 1: just don't know how legendary they are until they get
- 20:16Speaker 1: into this uh special community that you guys are. You
- 20:18Speaker 1: know this it caught me. It's kind of chocolate. You know,
- 20:23Speaker 1: It's like it made me feel a little good because
- 20:26Speaker 1: everything everybody when I was playing, you know, they're like, man,
- 20:30Speaker 1: you chose small man. You know how you do this?
- 20:31Speaker 1: I say? I said, man, I said, look then, piece
- 20:35Speaker 1: of leather, well put together. Don't you worry about you
- 20:37Speaker 1: just try to cutch tied. We all put saying it again,
- 20:43Speaker 1: pive this piece of leather we all put together, We
- 20:46Speaker 1: all put together. Yeah, that's that's you know, he said
- 20:49Speaker 1: that a lot of guys that oh yeah, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 1: he said. I said, Okay, see, I'll see you. I'll
- 20:57Speaker 1: see you next time. Let's see, let's see what you're
- 20:59Speaker 1: gonna do the questions We'd like to ask a lot
- 21:01Speaker 1: of the guests I come on the show, is if
- 21:03Speaker 1: there was a mount Rushmore of people that have had
- 21:08Speaker 1: influence or mentor or just some positive output on your life,
- 21:14Speaker 1: who would those people be? We we we we We've
- 21:16Speaker 1: done our a few times. If you had to pick
- 21:18Speaker 1: your mount rushmore or four people, who would those four
- 21:22Speaker 1: people be? Four older Ruthers? There was there was, There
- 21:28Speaker 1: was Melvin was earnest. There was Tyrone, who was the
- 21:32Speaker 1: one that that I was. I was old enough at
- 21:35Speaker 1: time to see him put it. And there was keying.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And the thing is I always wanted to be like
- 21:42Speaker 1: my brothers. My brothers were exceptional athletes in high school.
- 21:47Speaker 1: None of them went off to college. But and that
- 21:51Speaker 1: was one thing they all pitched then and say you're
- 21:54Speaker 1: not gonna make this mist people. You're going to college, right,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you know. But they wented too with jan had to
- 21:58Speaker 1: steal meld in the area. And I was like, man, wow,
- 22:03Speaker 1: but I seen my brothers, man, my mother. So the
- 22:06Speaker 1: original TV as I called him, Tyrone, I had never
- 22:11Speaker 1: seen anybody but the ball like you. And you know,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I was just trying to be like my brothers. Yea,
- 22:18Speaker 1: they motivated and that was the best example you had
- 22:21Speaker 1: growing up. It's like, man, I want to just be
- 22:24Speaker 1: like them. And you don't know where that will take you.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It's amazing when you talk to people about seven goals
- 22:29Speaker 1: things like that and you don't know what. You don't know, Jacually, man,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and you know, I was like going to college and
- 22:36Speaker 1: I'm about to college. All these colleges is coming in
- 22:39Speaker 1: recruited me, and I'm like, wow, man, I got it,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I got it, I got it. I guess I got
- 22:44Speaker 1: what it takes to play at the higher level. And
- 22:48Speaker 1: so man, I was I because my brothers, my mom
- 22:53Speaker 1: and dad. Man, it was just everybody was just it.
- 22:56Speaker 1: It was almost like a party. That's a great feeling.
- 22:58Speaker 1: That's gotta be a great feeling. And are you the
- 23:00Speaker 1: youngest of I'm the youngest of five boys. I'm the
- 23:04Speaker 1: sixth of seven child. I have a younger sister. The
- 23:06Speaker 1: first one was the girl. The girl, and we had
- 23:09Speaker 1: the five boys. I don't know, y'all. Just house was
- 23:11Speaker 1: just a Tornados tam growing up in my burning drive,
- 23:20Speaker 1: which is its projects, you know. So we we stayed
- 23:24Speaker 1: pretty bus and you're talking about that going down and
- 23:27Speaker 1: playing playing as a youngster, we used to go, we
- 23:29Speaker 1: used to break going the chants and for you to
- 23:34Speaker 1: get into the yeah it's okay, and we put tack
- 23:41Speaker 1: on football and people just and that's why they would
- 23:45Speaker 1: say man. And that's how they said, man, how you
- 23:49Speaker 1: get some quick and how you can do this? And
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm always I was gifted without man. When you played
- 23:54Speaker 1: on concrete and we played the street to tackle football
- 23:58Speaker 1: and you get hit, you fall on that cur a
- 24:00Speaker 1: couple of times. You don't want to hit that curve. Room. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 1: so that's that's what got me, got me a golden vic.
- 24:11Speaker 1: How many times did you leave some skin on that concrete? Brot?
- 24:16Speaker 1: But I put the pretty left. I left pretty together
- 24:19Speaker 1: and my younger years once I got into older brother.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Once you, like I say, once you follow on that
- 24:26Speaker 1: curve your ribs, you figure out the way, you figure
- 24:30Speaker 1: something out. Similar story. We played in Chicago, but we
- 24:33Speaker 1: played the street and we had cars. So you're throwing
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know, you play on one way street down, pass
- 24:38Speaker 1: it on. You're just trying not to run into the car.
- 24:42Speaker 1: But yeah, it end so well. Yes, well we'll tell me.
- 24:46Speaker 1: This is my last question for you man, could you
- 24:48Speaker 1: feel the black form? We like to ask all. I
- 24:50Speaker 1: guess this as well. Um, my name is Tony Dorset.
- 24:54Speaker 1: In my life right now is wonderful. I Uh with
- 25:01Speaker 1: my family and my wife and my daughters, my son
- 25:04Speaker 1: and my grandsons. Uh, that's what I'm all about. I
- 25:08Speaker 1: love my family and being brought up with four older brothers,
- 25:15Speaker 1: older sisters, with seven of us and just family family,
- 25:21Speaker 1: and that was the thing that motivated me as as
- 25:24Speaker 1: a kid. When I was playing ball, I would always
- 25:28Speaker 1: look up. The first thing I would do was look
- 25:31Speaker 1: up in the stands and see with my mom and dad,
- 25:35Speaker 1: we're seeing yeah. And I would always wait to him
- 25:37Speaker 1: and I was say, my older brothers were checking me out,
- 25:41Speaker 1: you know, and it was like, oh, man, David, David
- 25:44Speaker 1: Alfred's critique me. But I wanted that kind of stuff
- 25:48Speaker 1: and I wanted to be with my family kind of
- 25:50Speaker 1: brought us all together and all that. So that was
- 25:53Speaker 1: that was my whole deal. And as a kid, but
- 25:55Speaker 1: I never dreamed that I was gonna I don't know
- 25:59Speaker 1: the guy man. When I was I went to college.
- 26:02Speaker 1: That's one hundred and forty five pounds I did. I
- 26:05Speaker 1: wasn't did the dream. Never dreamed that I was going
- 26:08Speaker 1: to be a running back in college or even anybody
- 26:12Speaker 1: go give me a scholarship, and so man I was.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I was blessed. What was thissions did you play? You
- 26:19Speaker 1: always play running back? What was you like a receiver
- 26:21Speaker 1: or your dd bro? Bro? I was a mean bro
- 26:27Speaker 1: I played. I was a defender first. There isn't that bro.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Let me tell you. And I and I used to hit. Yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I told you they said you though, I said you,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you gonna be the worst though, I said, And that's
- 26:41Speaker 1: angry I used to do. I used to tell what
- 26:43Speaker 1: I was to go out on that field angry. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: would people let people know that, Uh, I'm gonna show you.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I'll show you what I could do. It's like a
- 26:51Speaker 1: hundred forty pound jo I used to I used to
- 26:56Speaker 1: I used to make some impact. So its a dB.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I gotta have this question because I gotta know how
- 27:00Speaker 1: he was hit him back in the day. Dude, were
- 27:02Speaker 1: you the guy that all right, I know they see me,
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'm still gonna try and light them up or you know,
- 27:07Speaker 1: just shodn't get him down. And then when they don't
- 27:09Speaker 1: see me, that when my till and all you no bro, no, no, no, no,
- 27:12Speaker 1: then they hadn't started. Yeah, it's changed there the offense
- 27:18Speaker 1: and run to the other side. They didn't want to
- 27:20Speaker 1: see you at all. Man, I was I was a
- 27:23Speaker 1: monster back. I was very strong, monster back, monster man.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I call him the moster. That's it. They called him. Yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 1: the Monster's man. I score out there man monster right
- 27:34Speaker 1: and or monster man. And they just try to come
- 27:39Speaker 1: back me until they found out saying, ah, man, you
- 27:41Speaker 1: got we gotta run. We gotta run on the quay
- 27:43Speaker 1: and can't get back that stuff that name. I had
- 27:47Speaker 1: that little man syndrome. I was just boling. I couldn't
- 27:52Speaker 1: do it. I can't do it, I said, y'all sor
- 27:55Speaker 1: And for those that don't know monster back, I know
- 27:57Speaker 1: he's talking about it's like a forty six, so it's
- 27:59Speaker 1: more like a strong sap or roverback. But whenever the
- 28:02Speaker 1: strong side is, you call it, you go send the
- 28:04Speaker 1: edge and you read anything coming downhill. Oh man, I
- 28:08Speaker 1: did not know. We'm gonna sit down, Tony said, he
- 28:10Speaker 1: is the most fired up talking about he has a
- 28:12Speaker 1: nice shout out on that is they got talking about
- 28:15Speaker 1: all the time, my monster back halls. So I want
- 28:19Speaker 1: them to have been coming back to the dark side.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Maybe you never should have laughed, so we come to
- 28:24Speaker 1: the dark side, all right. Man. Well look mister, it's
