- 0:00Yeah, first 18 minutes did a great job
- 0:02defending them and um did a lot of
- 0:05things that we wanted them to do. Um you
- 0:07know, they were shooting tough contested
- 0:09twos, which is kind of what the scouting
- 0:11report was. And I thought those last two
- 0:13minutes of the first half when we gave
- 0:14up three threes was a huge momentum
- 0:16swing in the game because that gave them
- 0:17the confidence that they needed to know
- 0:19that they could knock down those shots.
- 0:20And uh it carried over into the second
- 0:22half. Um you know, for them to score 59
- 0:24points, um you know, was unacceptable of
- 0:26our defense and that's on me as their
- 0:28coach. We got to do a better job. Um,
- 0:30you we got to do a better job with our
- 0:31one-on-one defense. Got to have way more
- 0:33pride being able to sit down and guard
- 0:35our man. The guy to my right's really
- 0:37the only one that does that at a high
- 0:38high level every single night. Everyone
- 0:40else is capable of doing it. Um, but we
- 0:43got to be able to do it more
- 0:44consistently. And, you know, if a
- 0:46freshman can do it every single
- 0:48possession, I need my better players to
- 0:50be able to do the same thing. So, um,
- 0:53you that was the difference in the game.
- 0:54you know, they made tough one-on-one
- 0:56plays in the second half and, you know,
- 0:58um we we got out of character
- 1:00defensively. Um let them get to their
- 1:02right hands.
- 1:04We uh stood up a couple times. We didn't
- 1:06contest a couple shots. Um
- 1:09we uh yeah, we just we got a little out
- 1:13of character from what worked in the
- 1:15first 18 minutes and um you know,
- 1:18ultimately gave them the confidence to
- 1:19go out there and do a lot of really good
- 1:20things offensively. So, credit to them
- 1:22cuz they made those tough shots and uh
- 1:25you know, we scored 92 points. We got to
- 1:26be able to win that game scoring 92
- 1:28points. Has nothing to do with our
- 1:29offense. Has everything to do with our
- 1:30defense and our defense got to get
- 1:31better. So, any questions?
- 1:33>> Questions?
- 1:38>> What do you think changed those last two
- 1:39minutes? Was it just breakdowns getting
- 1:42lost that allowed there for them to hit
- 1:43those threes?
- 1:44>> Yeah, one was, you know, we talked about
- 1:46at the three-minute mark, you know, we
- 1:48got to finish with three perfect
- 1:49checkouts. Very next possession, we get
- 1:51lost and we don't check out um
- 1:55>> Mlette.
- 1:55>> Mallette and he gets the offensive
- 1:57rebound, kicks out and bang a three. Uh
- 2:00next possession uh we help off the
- 2:02strong side corner and that was one of
- 2:04the rules. Never help off the strong
- 2:05side corner. We actually did the first
- 2:07play too and uh you know another three
- 2:10and then you know we um we lay on a
- 2:13screen in transition. Not supposed to do
- 2:15that. I'm supposed to body top those
- 2:16screens. We lay on it. We go underneath.
- 2:18we yell at the referee for a foul, they
- 2:20bang another three. So, just just mental
- 2:23breakdowns, um things that we talked
- 2:24about, you know, trying not to do. Um
- 2:27understand that it's going to happen
- 2:28every once in a while, but it can happen
- 2:29three straight possessions and that's
- 2:31what ultimately allowed them to cut it
- 2:33from 10 to four and uh you know, have
- 2:36confidence going into the second half.
- 2:39>> Coach, um you talked about those shots
- 2:42eventually falling for Todd and letting
- 2:44him shoot it. It started to fall for him
- 2:46here. Can you talk about maybe your
- 2:47frustration with getting him going, but
- 2:49then like you said, scoring 92 points
- 2:50and losing a game like this? Like how do
- 2:52you fix that?
- 2:53>> Got to guard.
- 2:56Just got to guard. Our best players got
- 2:58to be better defenders. And I can that
- 3:00can be a challenge and they can take
- 3:02that, you know, they can take that in a
- 3:05negative way or they can take it as me
- 3:06just, you know, knowing that they're
- 3:08capable because they've shown the
- 3:09ability to do so. Um, but you know, if
- 3:12if we're going to beat the best teams on
- 3:14our schedule, our best players have to
- 3:15play better defense. And too many times,
- 3:17you know, we got caught standing up or
- 3:19we weren't on the right hands or we
- 3:20didn't finish possessions and we talked
- 3:22about this being a really important game
- 3:24to having to finish possessions and, you
- 3:26know, we we didn't do a very good job of
- 3:27that tonight.
- 3:28>> Over there to your left, coach.
- 3:29>> Coach, over here all the way to the
- 3:30left. Uh, Keshan Murphy double double
- 3:32tonight. 13 points, 12 rebounds, six
- 3:35offensive, six defensive. What have what
- 3:37have you seen from his game that has
- 3:39grown and made him such a a big presence
- 3:42inside on both ends of the floor?
- 3:43>> Yeah, I thought tonight he played like
- 3:45he kind of did at the Florida game on
- 3:46the inside. He had four offensive
- 3:48rebounds in the first half and uh you
- 3:50know he's just obviously we've talked
- 3:52about it but he's just gotten gotten
- 3:53healthier which uh you know provides a
- 3:55little more pep in his step and um you
- 3:57know made a big three late you know just
- 4:00does a lot of good things for us. Um him
- 4:02and Sebastian both do a ton of good
- 4:03things for us on the inside and um so
- 4:06yeah, when he plays well, you know, we
- 4:08have a better chance of winning these
- 4:10games, so got to keep it up.
- 4:12>> Stephen, you only 22 free throws for
- 4:15y'all. It's just low for what you
- 4:16usually do. Just frustrated,
- 4:18disappointed that that y'all weren't
- 4:19able to get the line more. Is it kind of
- 4:21more on maybe the officials not calling
- 4:23it or you know y'all not attacking as
- 4:25much?
- 4:26What was you got in the class?
- 4:28>> So, we took 43 two-point attempts.
- 4:32Um,
- 4:35>> yeah, I mean, I thought we attacked the
- 4:36paint pretty pretty hard. Um, I got to
- 4:40watch the film and see if there were
- 4:41some, you know, possessions where, um,
- 4:44you know, we didn't get fouls, but no, I
- 4:46mean, I thought we we did a pretty good
- 4:48job attacking the rim, um, playing off
- 4:51two and, you know, trying to finish
- 4:53through contact. So, I'll have to watch
- 4:55the film and kind of see if, you know,
- 4:57should have been more, but um not really
- 4:59sure.
- 5:01>> Aiden Hall had nine of his 15 points in
- 5:03the last two and a half minutes. What
- 5:05did you make of what he did down the
- 5:06stretch?
- 5:08>> Yeah, we talked about it was like a
- 5:10two-point game and uh told our guys that
- 5:12a wide pin down was coming and we're
- 5:14standing straight up out of our stance
- 5:16and get nailed on the pin down and then
- 5:17we foul a three-point shooter.
- 5:20Just unacceptable. So, can't do that. if
- 5:23you want to win basketball games. So,
- 5:26um, and then, you know, he hit a really
- 5:28tough one on I think I thought it was
- 5:30pretty good defense, made a tough two,
- 5:31same way he did against&m, but you know,
- 5:34when when the previous possession when
- 5:36you allow him an open three and he makes
- 5:39it, that then gives you the confidence
- 5:41to go out there and and make a tough
- 5:42shot on the next possession. So, um, you
- 5:45know, just too casual, too laxidasical
- 5:49and, uh, we got burned on it. So he made
- 5:50a lot of big plays late and obviously
- 5:52got to the free throw line and and made
- 5:54his free throws. So he uh you know was a
- 5:56huge difference late for them making
- 5:58some tough shots.
- 6:01>> Sebastian
- 6:02defense started so well the first half
- 6:06kind of faint in your perspective kind
- 6:08of what what changed for you guys as a
- 6:10whole?
- 6:10>> Um I mean it started when we started
- 6:14communicating on our switches. Um, first
- 6:16half we we were weak switching. Um, we
- 6:20had guys rotating, we had guys flying
- 6:22around. Um, and I say second half there
- 6:26were two instances. Um, Eddie Yako just
- 6:29rolled to the rim untouched. Um, which
- 6:32is unacceptable. We knew that. Um, we
- 6:34know his profile was he was a law
- 6:36threat. He was that um, you know, at all
- 6:40levels of basketball he's played. Um but
- 6:43you know
- 6:45just it just was unacceptable. We just
- 6:46couldn't communicate and um that that
- 6:50kind of started that led to our offense
- 6:53started being stagnant and then once our
- 6:54offense was sagnet it started affecting
- 6:56our defense and so the game is right
- 6:58there
- 7:03>> Stephen what did you what did you think
- 7:04of Bettyo's impact in the game
- 7:06especially in the second half? Yeah, he
- 7:08had a huge impact. He played, you know,
- 7:10he changes what they do offensively
- 7:11because he's a guy that can catch balls
- 7:13in in the air and go finish at the rim.
- 7:15They don't have anyone else that can do
- 7:16that, you know, um at least with that
- 7:19athleticism, right? He can catch lobs
- 7:20and finish in the at the rim, you know.
- 7:22Um he did a great job, played really
- 7:24well for him, you know, that that's the
- 7:26difference in the game right there, you
- 7:27know, and uh you know, 12 points and
- 7:30three rebounds and he did a good job of,
- 7:32you know, um occupying us on the
- 7:34offensive glass. Um so yeah, he played
- 7:36great. you know, he makes that team
- 7:38better and um you know, with him their
- 7:40ceiling is a hell of a lot higher than
- 7:42without him. So, I think you know, we
- 7:44knew their guards were going to be
- 7:45effective. Um but, you know, he was a
- 7:48major difference in the game having 12
- 7:49points, you know, off the bench,
- 7:52>> Stephen. And uh obviously not pleased
- 7:54with the defense from your team. How do
- 7:55you sort of address that and move
- 7:57forward trying to fix it ahead of the
- 7:58next game? Yeah, I mean it's you got to
- 8:01have a, you know, short memory because
- 8:03um, you know, you got such a quick
- 8:05turnaround on Tuesday against a really
- 8:07another really good offensive team. So,
- 8:09got to break the film down tonight and
- 8:10just, you know, try and identify like
- 8:12where some of our biggest mistakes were
- 8:14and and try and learn and try and grow
- 8:16from it. Vanderbilt runs a ton of
- 8:17offensive sets, so it's going to be
- 8:18really hard to break that down tonight
- 8:21and be able to show the guys and then
- 8:23also try and get prepared for a really
- 8:24unique uh offense. So, I got to do a
- 8:27good job tonight of really just
- 8:28identifying areas that, you know, we we
- 8:30got exposed and um you know, I hope it
- 8:33was just us like, you know, having a
- 8:35lack of effort and energy so we can be
- 8:37like, "All right, we can't do that
- 8:38anymore." Um cuz when we like like
- 8:40Sebastian said, when we flew around and
- 8:42we finished possessions, like you saw
- 8:43what the results were in the first 18
- 8:45minutes, you know, we didn't make
- 8:46multiple efforts in the second half, you
- 8:48know. Um and when we did, they made
- 8:51tough shots because we gave them
- 8:52confidence at the end of the first half.
- 8:54So, uh, got to break it down tonight
- 8:56and, you know, figure out where we got
- 8:57to get better because, you know, we have
- 8:58another unbelievable opportunity on
- 8:59Tuesday to, uh, you know, wash this one
- 9:01away.
- 9:02>> Few more. Johnny,
- 9:03>> Stephen, just from a game plan
- 9:04perspective, trying to slow down Learon
- 9:06Fon, throwing different guards, and I
- 9:07mentioned you weren't happy with how you
- 9:09guarded, how difficult is it to try to
- 9:11slow a guy like that down that just
- 9:12seemed like kept coming all night?
- 9:14>> Yeah, I mean, you know, Sebastian did an
- 9:16unbelievable job of guarding him. Um,
- 9:18and I thought, you know, two of his
- 9:19threes were just heavily contested
- 9:21stepbacks and, you know, that's that's
- 9:23going to happen sometimes, right? He's
- 9:24an unbelievable player. He's a, you
- 9:26know, going to be a first round draft
- 9:27pick. He does those types of things. So,
- 9:30um, the parts that, you know, we got to
- 9:33be able to control is like we close out
- 9:34to him. We let him drive it right. Like,
- 9:36you just you can't do that, you know,
- 9:38cuz he's just too good of a player going
- 9:40downhill to his right and he'll take
- 9:41full advantage of it. and he just plays
- 9:43with great tempo and great pace and you
- 9:45know um he's physical offensively and uh
- 9:48you know just did a great job for him
- 9:50tonight. So um made some tough ones but
- 9:53you know I think some of our closeouts
- 9:55which we talked about being really
- 9:56important in this game um weren't
- 9:59disciplined enough and uh you know if 33
- 10:02wasn't guarding him then you know he was
- 10:04uh having a lot of success. We'll go
- 10:06Ferg and then finish with Mike.
- 10:08>> Sway. Just you guys have been in the
- 10:10spot season taking tough losses and been
- 10:12able to bounce back. What's the key to
- 10:13that? Especially knowing what y'all got
- 10:15coming up next week with Andy Diego and
- 10:16Arkansas.
- 10:17>> Um I mean honestly
- 10:20we have our team meetings. We have we'll
- 10:23talk um and then you know we just have
- 10:25to have a good practice. Stack a good
- 10:27day. Um
- 10:29I'm going say that's really it at the
- 10:30end of the day. You can't really maul on
- 10:33this loss. If you make it your
- 10:35everything, then we're not going to be
- 10:37ready for the next game and this can be
- 10:38a repeat of uh what happens. So, we've
- 10:41been here before. We'll bounce back from
- 10:42it. We'll be better on Tuesday.
- 10:44>> Last one.
- 10:45>> Uh Stephen, you guys only had five
- 10:47turnovers tonight, but um only seven
- 10:49points from the bench, which seems kind
- 10:51of like a statistical anomaly. How do
- 10:53you get more production from your bench
- 10:55guys moving into Vanderville?
- 10:58>> Yeah, I think you know Elijah was in
- 10:59foul trouble. Um, you know, Philip's got
- 11:02to play more. I got to find ways to get
- 11:04Philip more minutes. That's that's we
- 11:06got to be like 13 minutes is not enough
- 11:08for Philip. Um, we got to fix that. Um,
- 11:12you know, and Blake missed an open three
- 11:13and an open layup. So, um, you know, our
- 11:16bench production has been better. Um,
- 11:18you know, Elijah's been, you know,
- 11:19spark, but him being in foul trouble,
- 11:21that's like, you know, where a lot of
- 11:22the production comes from. But offense
- 11:24has nothing to do with it. Like scored
- 11:2692 points. you know, that that should be
- 11:29enough to win any game in our league.
- 11:31Um, you know, Todd had better offensive
- 11:34performance. You know, KO was making
- 11:35some shots. You know, four of our best
- 11:38offensive players had pretty good
- 11:39nights. Um, had nothing to do with our
- 11:41offense. Has everything to do with our
- 11:42defense. So, you know, if we want to win
- 11:44games, we'll sit down and guard like we
- 11:45did when we had that four game stretch,
- 11:47you know, a couple weeks ago. Um, if we
- 11:48want to continue to have tough results
- 11:50and continue to talk about the things
- 11:52that we got to do better, then, you
- 11:53know, we'll we'll we'll do what we did
- 11:55tonight. But this team's done a great
- 11:57job of bouncing back, you know, after
- 11:59tough situations. We just got to stay
- 12:01consistent like Seb said. Um, you know,
- 12:03got to learn from it and we just got to
- 12:05move on because, you know, this league,
- 12:07you know,
- 12:08>> the next one comes really quick and, uh,
- 12:11if you, you know, harp on this for too
- 12:13long, it it'll affect your performance
- 12:14on Tuesday and we can't let that happen.
- 12:16>> All right. Thank you.
- 12:17>> Thanks.
