  What started as a practical relocation for Tesla's

  operations have morphed into a sprawling network of projects
• 0:36
  that stretch well beyond building electric cars.

  The story begins way back in the spring of 2020, when Tesla,
• 0:44
  Musk's flagship electric vehicle company, faced mounting
• 0:47
  challenges in California. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept
• 0:51
  through the state, authorities ordered Tesla's Fremont
• 0:53
  manufacturing plant to halt all operations.
• 0:57
  Musk, known to be combative, refused to comply.

  The timing couldn't have been worse, or perhaps better,
• 1:04
  depending on your perspective. Tesla had just begun delivering
• 1:07
  its new Model Y crossover on March 16th of 2020, and while
• 1:11
  the world slowed to a crawl, Tesla was ramping up production.

  By May of 2020, tensions between Musk and California officials
• 1:19
  boiled over. In a public declaration on
• 1:21
  Twitter, Musk wrote. Frankly, this is the final
• 1:24
  straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and
• 1:28
  future programs to Texas or Nevada immediately.

  This announcement signaled a dramatic shift for a man who had
• 1:34
  spent much of his adult life in career in California after
• 1:38
  moving from South Africa at the tender age of 18.
• 1:42
  Now, though, his exit may have appeared reactionary, Musk's
• 1:46
  decision to relocate to Texas has strategic underpinnings.
• 1:49
  The state's open land, lower taxes, later regulations, and
• 1:53
  affordable housing made it an appealing place for a company
• 1:56
  looking to expand rapidly. These advantages stood in stark
• 1:59
  contrast to the densely pact, highly regulated environment of
• 2:03
  California. Now Texas Governor Greg Abbott
• 2:07
  confirmed that discussions about Tesla's move had begun as early
• 2:10
  as spring of 2020. The first tangible result of
• 2:13
  those talks came with the construction of Tesla's massive
• 2:16
  Gigafactory in Austin. But even as construction on the
• 2:19
  site began, Musk had broader ambitions in mind for Texas
• 2:23
  beyond just cars. Tesla may have led the charge,
• 2:26
  but it was just the beginning. Not long after the announcement
• 2:30
  of Tesla's relocation, Musk's tunneling venture, the Boring
• 2:32
  Company, followed suit. The company set up operations in
• 2:36
  Bastrop, a small town east of Austin along the Colorado River,
• 2:40
  and the land that was once a cow pasture has since transformed to
• 2:44
  what some are calling Hyperloop Plaza, now the research and
• 2:48
  development hub for high speed transportation projects.

  Now adjacent to the Boring Company's headquarters is a
• 2:54
  nascent community Musk has dubbed Snailbrook, reportedly
• 2:58
  inspired by conversations between Musk, musician Grimes,
• 3:01
  rapper Kanye West and West's personal architect.
• 3:05
  Early reports describe Snell Brook as having space for around
• 3:09
  110 homes, warehouses, a pool, sports facilities and even a
• 3:14
  putting gram. While far from a futuristic
• 3:16
  metropolis, the development signals must intend to build an
• 3:20
  integrated environment for his companies and his employees.
• 3:26
  Now, though, Tesla's moved Garner's headlines.
• 3:30
  Musk's connection to Texas dates back to 2014, when SpaceX began
• 3:34
  buying land in the coastal village of Boca Chica, about 350
• 3:38
  miles South of Austin. Initially, the company's
• 3:41
  activities appeared minimal until 2019, when testing for the
• 3:46
  Starship program began. Over time, the area transformed
• 3:50
  into Spacex's operational hub known as Starbase.
• 3:54
  Now in parallel to Bastrop, Snail Brook.
• 3:57
  Boca Chica also houses a private employee community, complete
• 4:01
  with a SpaceX exclusive pub and a private school called at
• 4:04
  Astra. The transformation has been so
• 4:07
  extensive, the street names were changed to reflect Spacex's
• 4:10
  dominance in the region. Little side note, I spent about
• 4:14
  a year on the ground reporting from Spacex's star base about
• 4:20
  Starship. It was the first iteration of a
• 4:23
  fully stacked Starship and I spent a year documenting every
• 4:27

  Newspod. Now the Neurolink expansion

  happened to another piece of Musk's vision for Texas came to
• 4:45
  light in July 2024 when Neurolink, Musk's brain implant
• 4:48
  company, began building a $14 million, three story office and
• 4:52
  manufacturing facility near the Colorado River between Tesla's
• 4:57
  Gigafactory in the Boring Company's Bastrop site. 37 acre
• 5:01
  property offers ample space for expansion and marks a
• 5:04
  significant step for Nerlink, which remains headquartered in
• 5:07
  California. The shift to Texas coincides
• 5:10
  with Nerlink's transition from animal testing to human trials,
• 5:14
  and with its new facility, the company seems poised for fresh
• 5:17
  development and possibly a greater degree of autonomy from
• 5:21
  its California origins. In addition to building
• 5:24
  companies, Musk has also turned his attention to education.

  Public records reveal that Musk, through his charitable
• 5:30
  foundation, donated $100 million to establish a primary and
• 5:34
  secondary STEM focus school in Austin.

  The long term plan, according to tax filings, is to expand the
• 5:40
  school into a university dedicated to science and
• 5:43
  technology education. Perhaps the most unexpected
• 5:47
  development came in July of 2024, when Musk announced on X,
• 5:52
  formerly known as Twitter, that the platform's headquarters
• 5:55
  would relocate to Austin. X, which Musk took over in a
• 5:59
  controversial acquisition, has had a tumultuous journey under
• 6:02
  his leadership. 1 of Musk's early moves was laying off about
• 6:06
  80% of the workforce, running much of the company's office
• 6:09
  space in San Francisco obsolete and empty.
• 6:12
  Given X's status as a digital platform, the decision to base
• 6:16
  its operations in a rural area like Bastrop rather than
• 6:19
  Austin's urban core raise eyebrows.
• 6:22
  However, Musk's vision for X is an everything app, and its
• 6:25
  connection to its generative AI venture, XAI, may explain the
• 6:28
  move. Advanced AI development demands
• 6:31
  significant computing power, and Musk has already built a major
• 6:34
  AI data center in Memphis, TN. A second, possibly even larger,
• 6:39
  data center in Bastrop could serve as the technological
• 6:42
  backbone for Musk's future AI projects.

  Now, Musk and his Texas ventures may seem expansive and
• 6:50
  innovative, they have not been without challenges or criticism.

  Some residents down in Boca Chica and Bastrop have expressed
• 6:57
  concerns over Musk's companies growing influence in the
• 7:00
  potential environmental impact of these large scale
• 7:03
  developments. SpaceX is constantly in turmoil
• 7:07
  with environmentalists down at Starbase.

  It happened numerous times when I was down there, and it's
• 7:13
  continuing to happen to this day.

  Additionally, Musk's often controversial public statements
• 7:19
  and combative personality have led to friction with local
• 7:22
  governments and community leaders.
• 7:24
  Now, despite these hurdles, Texas offers Musk something
• 7:26
  California no longer could. The space and regulatory freedom
• 7:30
  to pursue his dreams, The state's relative relative
• 7:35
  affordability and accessibility make it fertile grounds for
• 7:38
  Musk's companies to expand operations and bring his
• 7:42
  ambitious projects to fruition. Now, while much has already been
• 7:46
  accomplished, Musk's Texas story is far from over.

  The Gigafactory, Hyperloop Plaza, Snellbrook, Nerlink,
• 7:52
  Starbase are just the foundation of what Musk appears to envision
• 7:56
  as a technological and scientific hub in the Lone Star
• 7:59
  State. The question is not whether Musk
• 8:01
  will continue to expand in Texas, but rather how far this
• 8:05
  growth will go and what form it will ultimately take.
