- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Young Nicholas blom On, the vocalist for Derail, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: we are playing our first and possibly only show on Friday,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the thirteenth of December at Most Desert Clubhouse.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Cannot wait.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Fantastic brother, Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:15Speaker 2: No worries, man, thanks for having me.
- 0:17Speaker 4: As you say, Derail are hitting Most Desert Clubhouse on Friday,
- 0:20Speaker 4: December thirteenth as part of the end of the year
- 0:23Speaker 4: bash with the Poor and the Whiskeys.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Bro It's about torect delivered. It's a rock threesome for Christmas. Mate.
- 0:29Speaker 3: How cool is it?
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's massive, man. We're really sorry to be a part
- 0:33Speaker 2: of it.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Yeah. So we'll get into the nitty gritty a little
- 0:37Speaker 4: later on, but basically this is going to be Derail's
- 0:40Speaker 4: debut and potentially final live performance.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Potentially? Yeah, we'll see what happens. Like, there's no rules
- 0:48Speaker 2: with Derail. I guess.
- 0:54Speaker 4: If that happens, it'll have to be some kind of
- 0:56Speaker 4: world record though, play one gig and then fuck off.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know, maybe we're going to take the
- 1:01Speaker 2: cake with that. I honestly don't know, man. I never
- 1:05Speaker 2: thought we were ever going.
- 1:06Speaker 1: To take a stage, so the fact that we're doing
- 1:08Speaker 1: it is pretty massive as it is.
- 1:11Speaker 4: It is what's even more massive in my eyes anyway,
- 1:14Speaker 4: Like how did you manage to convince Gab from the
- 1:16Speaker 4: poor to put you on your first ever show? Like
- 1:19Speaker 4: it is a hard man to please at the best
- 1:21Speaker 4: of times.
- 1:22Speaker 1: May Gavin, our bass player Stu, who's the primary songwriter
- 1:27Speaker 1: for d Rail, used to play in a band together.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Gav and Skeeney were a band in a band called
- 1:32Speaker 1: Lump and who was the bass player, right, So he's
- 1:37Speaker 1: been tight with those boys for years.
- 1:39Speaker 3: That's what that name from the past. How good would
- 1:41Speaker 3: I love? It was probably one of the best bands
- 1:43Speaker 3: to come out of this part of the world. I
- 1:44Speaker 3: reckon one.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'll never forget watching Lump.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You know, when I was sort of coming up in
- 1:50Speaker 1: the scene and watching Skeeny on stage, he really.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Taught me a lot about how to be a good
- 1:55Speaker 2: front man. You know.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I'll bet you told you a lot about what not
- 1:58Speaker 4: to do as a person as well.
- 2:04Speaker 2: No, he's always been a sweetheart to me.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Beyond what can we expect from Durid Live, they're actually
- 2:12Speaker 4: before we get into that, tell us a bit about
- 2:14Speaker 4: the band, because I know about it because I've read
- 2:16Speaker 4: all this stuff in front of me, but not many
- 2:18Speaker 4: other people do well.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Essentially, So Stu and I got together.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Late twenty ten's and started a project called Dog without
- 2:29Speaker 1: a Day. Right at the time, it was a little
- 2:32Speaker 1: bit heavier, just sort of all over.
- 2:34Speaker 2: The place, but it never kind of came to fruition.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And then a couple of years later, he was working
- 2:39Speaker 1: on some songs with text who's the other the guitar player.
- 2:43Speaker 1: They put together some songs and I came into audition
- 2:46Speaker 1: and we just kind of hit it off and we
- 2:48Speaker 1: wrote a whole EP, put it out just digitally, and
- 2:53Speaker 1: I got a little bit of traction. People liked it,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but we never really pursued it, and then we just
- 2:58Speaker 1: kind of wrote another EP just for fun. It was
- 3:01Speaker 1: all just a you know, shits and gigs kind of thing,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know. We were just mucking around writing songs.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That we wanted to hear.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And yeah, then time has elapsed and you and I
- 3:11Speaker 1: hang out all the time, and we decided, you know what,
- 3:13Speaker 1: fuck it, let's let's get on a stage and show
- 3:15Speaker 1: people what these songs are actually like in a live setting,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know, because we know this is going to fuck
- 3:21Speaker 1: some people up.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Well indeed, so people probably can't recognize Mate with that
- 3:25Speaker 4: little bit of facial growth going on, but you're actually
- 3:27Speaker 4: seeing for the clencio as well.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So we'll hear this music from Jerala.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I think it's going to shock the fuck out of
- 3:34Speaker 4: a lot of people, Mate, because I listened to it
- 3:36Speaker 4: yesterday and I honestly thought you were a fucking a
- 3:40Speaker 4: major US band out here on tour.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Like the sound, it's a massive sound.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Your your voice is like fucking three doors down fucking style. Look,
- 3:49Speaker 4: it's just a massive presence, Mate, Like where's it come from?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Look?
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I've kind of always dabbled in lots of different
- 3:58Speaker 1: styles when it comes tovocals, and if I take on
- 4:01Speaker 1: a new project, it's always been like a thing for
- 4:03Speaker 1: me to try and do something different, because there's no
- 4:06Speaker 1: point in being in two bands to sound the fucking
- 4:08Speaker 1: saying as far as I'm concerned, you know.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And I actually used to sing for a.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Heavy a heavy band long time ago now, like two
- 4:18Speaker 1: thousand and four onwards. That was called Dreamscape Measurement, And
- 4:22Speaker 1: in that band, I tried this vocal style which was
- 4:25Speaker 1: kind of yelling with a pitch, you know, and that
- 4:28Speaker 1: was something that I was trying to emulate at the
- 4:30Speaker 1: time from people like Jesse from kill Switch, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: stuff like that, and I kind of found my own
- 4:36Speaker 1: vibe in that, and I took it to Derail, and
- 4:39Speaker 1: you know, because I wanted to do something different and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I established it in Dreamscape, but Dreamscape broke up and
- 4:45Speaker 1: I brought that sound to Derail and Derail was more straightforward,
- 4:49Speaker 1: hard hitting, and it kind of it just really worked.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It just jelled, and so, yeah, I just wanted to
- 4:55Speaker 2: do something different.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And the Bears pretty much gone against the grain from
- 4:59Speaker 3: this start.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Made So are you just going to even practice before
- 5:02Speaker 4: the gig or are you just going to get up
- 5:03Speaker 4: in the first time on stage?
- 5:05Speaker 3: Is of first set.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We actually have our first rehearsal this coming Friday, the
- 5:10Speaker 1: first of November.
- 5:12Speaker 2: We're going to do maybe.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Four See, the thing is that the guys that are
- 5:20Speaker 1: in this band, we're all seasoned musos. You know, we've
- 5:23Speaker 1: all been in the game for a long time. We
- 5:25Speaker 1: don't need to sit there and figure things out.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We know what we're doing.
- 5:30Speaker 1: We've just got to get in the rooms together and
- 5:32Speaker 1: splash a few things out and then I'm pretty confident
- 5:34Speaker 1: that we could get away with one or two rehearsals,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know.
- 5:39Speaker 4: So basically, no one's really going to know what to
- 5:42Speaker 4: expect from you guys, and you can't even tell us
- 5:44Speaker 4: because you've.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Got no idea what to expect either.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I've got a pretty good feeling, man, I mean, the
- 5:53Speaker 1: vibe in the camp is big, you know, like everyone's excited,
- 5:56Speaker 1: everyone's pumped.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Everyone wants to bring a massive show.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And again, you know, being that this could be the
- 6:01Speaker 1: only opportunity for people to ever hear Derail, we want
- 6:04Speaker 1: to leave that lasting impression. So we're not taking this lightly.
- 6:08Speaker 1: We're coming on that stage and we're bringing fucking fire Man.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Now you sort of touch on this a little bit before, bro,
- 6:14Speaker 4: But you've released the two EPs, Burn It Down and
- 6:17Speaker 4: Low Tide without planning show.
- 6:19Speaker 3: So was there a reason for that?
- 6:21Speaker 4: Like when you were only create music, like you have
- 6:24Speaker 4: to agree that the first thing you want to do
- 6:25Speaker 4: is get out there and play it live, Like you
- 6:27Speaker 4: just have to pull yourselves back to not play.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I just at the time we were writing, it was
- 6:35Speaker 1: only the three of us and we didn't really have
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know, we didn't have a drummer and Stu was
- 6:40Speaker 1: bouncing between bass and guitars. We just it wasn't really
- 6:43Speaker 1: ever a band format, you know, Like so I was
- 6:46Speaker 1: just never on the cards. So it didn't really make
- 6:49Speaker 1: any real difference to us as to what we were
- 6:52Speaker 1: going to do with it. We were just kind of
- 6:53Speaker 1: writing songs for fun, like I said, writing what we
- 6:55Speaker 1: wanted to hear. And now enough time's gone past that
- 6:59Speaker 1: we've decided. You know, we think people are people they're
- 7:02Speaker 1: still not ready, but we think people might be ready enough.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Did you manage to build up a bit of a
- 7:10Speaker 4: fan baseus through those up.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Look?
- 7:14Speaker 1: I think there are there are definitely people who you know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: who latched onto it, but based on you know, between
- 7:20Speaker 1: myself and Stell and our previous projects, there were people
- 7:23Speaker 1: that that grabbed a hold of it, but not really
- 7:26Speaker 1: like it's not we're not we're never a big name
- 7:29Speaker 1: or anything like that. You know this this is probably
- 7:32Speaker 1: the thing that's going to change that m hm.
- 7:34Speaker 4: So you can just say that, and I agree with him, mate,
- 7:36Speaker 4: Like when people hear it's going to blow a lot
- 7:38Speaker 4: of fucking heads. But why are you even contemplating maybe
- 7:42Speaker 4: not doing it again at this stage? Like it's it's
- 7:45Speaker 4: sort of it seems to be a defeatist attitude before
- 7:48Speaker 4: you get on stage.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It's not that.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's you know, it's the commitment of the commitment of
- 7:54Speaker 1: being in a band and throwing you're all at It
- 7:57Speaker 1: is a lot of work and we need to make sure, man,
- 8:00Speaker 1: that everything does work before we commit to something like that. Essentially,
- 8:04Speaker 1: like this is like for us. Like I said, it's
- 8:08Speaker 1: a chance for us to show the world what we
- 8:10Speaker 1: do and if that all really works out really well, we'll.
- 8:13Speaker 2: See what happens.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I'm not counting anything out, but I am also preparing
- 8:17Speaker 1: for it to be just a one off.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:19Speaker 1: For me, I haven't done a heavy vocal thing on
- 8:22Speaker 1: stage for a really long time. You know, most people
- 8:24Speaker 1: these days know me for the Slencio, which is not
- 8:27Speaker 1: a heavy band, and I kind of want to show
- 8:31Speaker 1: people that I still have that fire in me and
- 8:34Speaker 1: then just see if there's some reasonable demand.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah, it's right, brother, All right, Well, thanks very much
- 8:41Speaker 4: for your time, man, always a pleasure speaking with you.
- 8:43Speaker 4: The band who I called Derail, will be at most
- 8:46Speaker 4: As a clubhouse Friday, December thirteenth at the end of
- 8:49Speaker 4: the year bash with the whiskeys and the poor. Always
- 8:51Speaker 4: a good time with the poor. So it's going to
- 8:53Speaker 4: be a crack of a night anyway, brother, but I
- 8:55Speaker 4: shall see you there bright and early
