- 1:09Speaker 2: us to review, send us an email.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah. This isn't just going to be a thing for
- 1:13Speaker 1: the summer, is it?
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Breaking news today, we are discussing Love on the Sidelines,
- 1:19Speaker 1: which originally aired on January sixteenth, twenty sixteen. You want
- 1:24Speaker 1: to hit us with.
- 1:24Speaker 2: A synopsis, I do. Laurel is a struggling fashion designer
- 1:29Speaker 2: who finds herself with a job as a personal assistant
- 1:32Speaker 2: for Danny, a quarterback sidelined with an injury. I don't
- 1:36Speaker 2: know why is it injury? Like that? Laurel knows nothing
- 1:39Speaker 2: about football, and Danny hasn't ever had a female assistant.
- 1:43Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Well, I've got another section where it's going to be
- 1:46Speaker 1: that's it moment. But let's start with me too a note.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 1:52Speaker 1: This was directed by the prolific hall Mark director Terry Ingram,
- 1:55Speaker 1: whose work we saw most recently in The Wedding Cottage,
- 1:58Speaker 1: but he also directed y of the six Wedding Veil
- 2:01Speaker 1: movies Three Wives, Been In a Baby, his idb's filthy
- 2:05Speaker 1: with Hallmark directed movies.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah. This was also written by sister teams Sandra and
- 2:11Speaker 2: Judith Burg. They also wrote all of the Wedding Veil
- 2:15Speaker 2: movies plus The Wedding Cottage. They really only have twenty
- 2:19Speaker 2: one writing credits, which I find astounding considering they've written
- 2:24Speaker 2: so many movies lately.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they're really churning them out. Emily Kinney stars as
- 2:29Speaker 1: Laurel Welk. She has twenty nine acting credits, but is
- 2:32Speaker 1: perhaps best known for her role as Beth Green on
- 2:35Speaker 1: The Walking Dead. This is her one and only Hallmark movie.
- 2:39Speaker 1: She is also a musician, and her latest single, walking
- 2:42Speaker 1: Round Your Dreams, dropped in twenty twenty three. I'm gonna
- 2:45Speaker 1: guess us a country song. It's like a happy It
- 2:50Speaker 1: could be a country crossover slash light pop. Okay, I
- 2:54Speaker 1: listened to it.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Did you? Did you enjoy it? Oh? Interesting? Okay, why
- 3:00Speaker 2: you're laughing, I'm just curious, okay. John reared and plays
- 3:04Speaker 2: Danny Holland. He was most recently in eighty three episodes
- 3:08Speaker 2: of a series called Hudson Rex It's a Canadian police procedural.
- 3:14Speaker 2: In his forty acting credits, he also has a role
- 3:17Speaker 2: in White Chicks, as well as Scary Movie four, which
- 3:22Speaker 2: we're from years ago.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Yes, wow, if I just had to drop those gems. Wow.
- 3:28Speaker 2: In twenty fourteen, he did a Homewark Christmas movie called
- 3:30Speaker 2: The Christmas Secret, co starring Bethany joy Lyn's and.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, coincidentally, my husband just happened to watch that movie
- 3:38Speaker 1: last week and it made him cry.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Made him cry because why, I mean, obviously, I've never
- 3:43Speaker 2: seen it.
- 3:43Speaker 1: She plays a struggling single mother in that movie with
- 3:48Speaker 1: the children's father. I see going through some stuff, got it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Joe Thie's Been plays Danny's dad, Owen, and he played
- 3:55Speaker 1: quarterback for the Washington Redskins in his day.
- 3:59Speaker 2: This Maybe was filmed in Vancouver during October and November
- 4:03Speaker 2: of twenty fifteen.
- 4:04Speaker 1: The two more little acting notes. Ron Lucas is played
- 4:07Speaker 1: by Victor zinc Junior hands twenty eight acting credits, including
- 4:10Speaker 1: a role in next week's movie Frozen in Love and
- 4:14Speaker 1: four episodes of Girls Gone Hallmark Throwback Date My Dad?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Who was he In Date My Dad?
- 4:22Speaker 1: He played Bjorn Maybe he worked at the gym. Oh okay,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I don't remember who Bjorn was. He was in four episodes.
- 4:29Speaker 1: He most recently had a supporting role in twenty twenty
- 4:32Speaker 1: two's The Gift of Peace with Nikki de Loochen, Brennan Elliott,
- 4:37Speaker 1: Got It.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Patrick Sabogi plays Agent Sean and this is another dude
- 4:42Speaker 2: who works. He has one hundred and twenty four acting credits,
- 4:45Speaker 2: including last year's We Need a Little Christmas, which I
- 4:49Speaker 2: watched and liked. And he's also been in a couple
- 4:53Speaker 2: episodes of Hudson and Rex with our football guy John Reardon,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and a twenty fifteen be simply titled Sorority Murder Right
- 5:04Speaker 2: up your Alley. It is totally right up my alley.
- 5:06Speaker 1: What was your first impression of love on the sidelines.
- 5:11Speaker 2: My first impression is it's me, not you. I'll explain
- 5:16Speaker 2: more later.
- 5:17Speaker 1: My first impression is I fear I owe everyone an
- 5:19Speaker 1: apology as my memory for Hallmark movies of the past
- 5:21Speaker 1: cannot be trusted.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Mega says she picked this movie for us to watch.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Chev you don't think it came from a listener when
- 5:29Speaker 2: we pulled them.
- 5:32Speaker 1: In fact, I don't. It could have been both. It
- 5:34Speaker 1: could have been both. We weren't able to include all
- 5:37Speaker 1: of the listener movies, so I may have put in
- 5:39Speaker 1: a plug for this one.
- 5:41Speaker 2: But you know why you put a plug for this one? Man.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I have positive memories of it. I had seen it before.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I liked it.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But you'll recall if I throw back to Mingle All
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Way, a movie that we watched, and I also
- 5:56Speaker 1: had fond memories of that movie and Wolf they did
- 5:59Speaker 1: not hold up.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, well, should we talk about what we liked
- 6:06Speaker 2: about this movie.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Okay, Laurel has a cool car.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Mine is Haley Sales who plays BFF Gina.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I liked her, and.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Uh that's it. I got one more. Okay, I didn't
- 6:23Speaker 2: think the football seats were that bad. No, me either.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's a good point. I actually kind of enjoyed those.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I just wrote. I don't hate the story idea, but
- 6:31Speaker 1: I did hate the execution.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Considering this is written and directed by Hallmark Royalty, I
- 6:40Speaker 2: would say, yes, this is hugely disappointing. Yes, the whole
- 6:45Speaker 2: thing was for me. Yes, what did we wish for? Okay?
- 6:51Speaker 1: Wow, I've got a list. Okay, first of all, that
- 6:54Speaker 1: this movie made in twenty fifteen didn't feel like it
- 6:57Speaker 1: was actually made in the Stone Ages. Danny's a full
- 7:00Speaker 1: blown caveman. I need a dude assistant because I need
- 7:03Speaker 1: someone to spot me and I need to walk around
- 7:06Speaker 1: in my underwear.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Uh hot tip, dude.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Even your male assistant doesn't want to see you in
- 7:11Speaker 1: your undies.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah? Agree? Why was he so like? He was the worst?
- 7:19Speaker 2: He was in a perpetual bad mood the entire movie,
- 7:24Speaker 2: the worst, and was such a jerk. Yes, like he
- 7:29Speaker 2: only cared about himself.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Only he has no redeeming qualities.
- 7:33Speaker 2: No, none, none.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Also, dude needs a lesson in workplace harassment for that kiss.
- 7:40Speaker 1: They're straight up fighting, he's boss, and he decides to
- 7:44Speaker 1: diffuse the tension by kissing her.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And yes, oh that whole scene like she's like yelling
- 7:50Speaker 2: at him, like goes in and then he was in
- 7:53Speaker 2: for a kiss. I'm like, no, that's so wrong.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Not okay, what else did you wish for? I've got more?
- 8:01Speaker 2: But okay, if you remember, my first impression was it's me,
- 8:05Speaker 2: not you.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Have you ever experienced not liking someone because they remind
- 8:10Speaker 2: you of someone else?
- 8:11Speaker 1: Oh?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Sure? So Emily Kinney, who plays Laurel in this movie,
- 8:16Speaker 2: looks and talks exactly like someone I used to be
- 8:20Speaker 2: friendly with. Oh no, and that's all I could see.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I totally brought my own baggage into watching this movie,
- 8:25Speaker 2: but like, I immediately disliked her, and unfairly, I admit, unfairly,
- 8:32Speaker 2: but I didn't like the actor or the character. I
- 8:35Speaker 2: hear you based on my own stuff. When Janny's teammate
- 8:40Speaker 2: comes to visit him at the house and Laurel thanks
- 8:44Speaker 2: for stealing my thunder but yes, when he picked her
- 8:47Speaker 2: up and physically moves her, I said out loud. I
- 8:51Speaker 2: was like, oh no, sir, like, don't ever lay hands
- 8:57Speaker 2: on me. And honestly, I know this was probably supposed
- 9:00Speaker 2: to be funny, but it felt super sick to me.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I agree. He was completely dismissing what she was saying
- 9:07Speaker 2: by physically removing her.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Yes, it was not cute.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Mmmmm so bad. I was like, oh no, eight years
- 9:14Speaker 2: ago was not the past. I know, but it was
- 9:19Speaker 2: pre like to me too, but still, yeah, I hated that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I hated it. I haven't felt this much rage watching
- 9:27Speaker 2: a movie in a really long time. And when I
- 9:30Speaker 2: feel rage like this, I want to throw my remote
- 9:32Speaker 2: at the TV. Like I hated that. All of that.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Well, speaking of rage, excuse me. She leaves her best
- 9:39Speaker 1: friend's wedding because her boss called her and needed her.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: No, you need to have a little backbone. I do
- 9:44Speaker 1: not care what his emergency is. He has, he has
- 9:48Speaker 1: a mother, he has a sister. If he's actually having
- 9:50Speaker 1: an emergency, he can call them. And your best friend's like,
- 9:53Speaker 1: it's a good I couldn't go one true love, so
- 9:56Speaker 1: you go ahead?
- 9:57Speaker 2: What is it? I mean?
- 9:59Speaker 1: No, you're a arable friend. In this moment.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I know, okay, now, remember we had recently talked about
- 10:04Speaker 2: this too. I think it was it was that Baseball
- 10:08Speaker 2: movie and she missed her best friend's wedding because she
- 10:11Speaker 2: was working in Paris. Yes, and we were like, that's acceptable,
- 10:15Speaker 2: Like she was working.
- 10:16Speaker 1: This is different, right, one hundred percent different. Having a
- 10:21Speaker 1: commitment that doesn't allow you to attend a wedding is
- 10:24Speaker 1: one thing. Leaving in the middle of the wedding is
- 10:28Speaker 1: a different situation for a not actual emergency. I wish
- 10:32Speaker 1: that Ron Lucas had been Laurel's love interest. I'm so
- 10:35Speaker 1: glad that somebody gets to have him. But he's consistently
- 10:38Speaker 1: wonderful throughout this entire movie.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I have a question about that, you know, and I
- 10:43Speaker 2: might as well just bring it up here. He was
- 10:46Speaker 2: definitely flirting with Laurel at the beginning of this movie,
- 10:48Speaker 2: and I thought those two were gonna pair up. But
- 10:52Speaker 2: then Ron and Danny's sister end up like getting together,
- 10:59Speaker 2: which kind of threw me for a loop because he
- 11:01Speaker 2: was coming on pretty hard for Laurel, and then he
- 11:04Speaker 2: bounced over to Danny's sister. I was like, red flag,
- 11:06Speaker 2: red flag, redl is.
- 11:08Speaker 1: He just like one of those guys who's like charming
- 11:10Speaker 1: and fun and it seems like he's flirting with everybody
- 11:12Speaker 1: when he's just being a nice guy.
- 11:14Speaker 2: He said to Danny that she was He didn't say
- 11:17Speaker 2: she was hot. I don't know what he said, but
- 11:19Speaker 2: he said that she was cute. Yeah, fair enough. I
- 11:22Speaker 2: liked him. I he was fine. I mean, he was fine.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I just thought that was like weird.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Though this movie has so many positive IMDb reviews, I
- 11:31Speaker 1: need someone to come explain it to what.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Well were they written in twenty fifteen?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Yes, and well, I don't know what the landscape of
- 11:38Speaker 1: Hallwark Movies was, but obviously I remembered liking it. I'm
- 11:43Speaker 1: embarrassed for myself. But they there are glowing reviews for
- 11:47Speaker 1: this movie and I don't get it. Absolutely not.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I don't get it because Danny and Laurel didn't have
- 11:54Speaker 2: any chemistry to me but not No, So what makes
- 11:58Speaker 2: it like fun romantic comedy. It's not even well. I
- 12:03Speaker 2: don't know if it was supposed to be acommodate or not,
- 12:05Speaker 2: but what makes it appealing to people? You know?
- 12:08Speaker 1: I saw some reviews that were like, I liked that
- 12:10Speaker 1: Laurel was like, I'm gonna learn how to do this job.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna learn about football. Fine, she did a job
- 12:16Speaker 1: and learned about it, but no, yeah, and uh, okay,
- 12:21Speaker 1: what did you think of her her fashion line?
- 12:24Speaker 2: Oh my god, those were the most tragic, Like turning
- 12:29Speaker 2: a jersey into like some sort of something for a.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Woman to wear.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I know that's a line that people have now.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it was not for me, but I actually could
- 12:41Speaker 1: see it being successful.
- 12:43Speaker 2: But he didn't like like the lace up front of
- 12:47Speaker 2: the jersey.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yes, that's it again, not for me, but I could
- 12:50Speaker 1: see it being successful.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Girlfriend wore it to work.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that was weird.
- 12:55Speaker 2: What And then she goes to the stadium to meet
- 12:58Speaker 2: Danny at work. She looks like a fan because she's
- 13:01Speaker 2: wearing his jersey, not like his employees.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Yes, oh that's a little weird to be wearing his
- 13:07Speaker 1: jersey out in pub.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yes, I agree. Okay, So I hated that they portrayed
- 13:13Speaker 2: the women in this movie as not knowing a damn
- 13:16Speaker 2: thing about sports. Yes, like, I don't know everything about
- 13:20Speaker 2: every sport, but I'm also not a full on dummy
- 13:23Speaker 2: where I'm like, what is it they wear cleats or skates? What? Whatever?
- 13:29Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Well, and they're in this football world like they they're
- 13:34Speaker 1: not so clueless that they wouldn't have figured it out.
- 13:37Speaker 2: They're hanging out at the bar on Sunday while everybody
- 13:41Speaker 2: is watching football, like you start to learn things, yes,
- 13:46Speaker 2: even against your will, and your husband is like a
- 13:50Speaker 2: super die hard fan. Laurel was doing Danny's fantasy football stuff.
- 13:55Speaker 1: What. Yeah, that's bizarre to me because every person I've
- 13:59Speaker 1: known that's ever done fantasy football enjoys like the management
- 14:02Speaker 1: part of it, like the trades and fighting with I
- 14:05Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, I know very little about fantasy football.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But when my son.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Plays the text going back and forth about the trades
- 14:10Speaker 1: they're trying to make are fast and furious. He would
- 14:13Speaker 1: be like, here, mom, do this for me.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah totally.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Oh god, I just hated this movie. Unfortunately me too.
- 14:18Speaker 1: You ready for did you see that?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah? I have one?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Okay, go ahead.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Laurel wore the exact same nail polish the entire movie,
- 14:25Speaker 2: and one scene had a huge chip out of.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Her like no her pointer finger two week long manic
- 14:31Speaker 1: here didn't make Oh that's awful. Entire filming of the movie.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So at the parents anniversary party, Lucas is wearing a
- 14:38Speaker 1: bow tie and the entire strap of his bow tie
- 14:41Speaker 1: is completely outside of his collar.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I did notice.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I was like, what's going on with his tie? And
- 14:46Speaker 1: my husband was like, yeah, he's all messed up.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I did notice that, Yes, I did notice that.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Danny complains that he can't have Laurel as an assistant
- 14:53Speaker 1: because she can't be in the locker room. She's in
- 14:55Speaker 1: the locker room all the time. There are multiple scenes
- 14:57Speaker 1: where she's in the locker room, and even and once
- 15:00Speaker 1: she quits, she's like, I guess you can have a
- 15:01Speaker 1: dude in the locker room. You were there all the time.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And also, your assistant doesn't need to be in the
- 15:05Speaker 1: locker room. This is a dumb plup.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I was just wondering that what is the assistant doing
- 15:09Speaker 2: in the locker room?
- 15:09Speaker 1: Seriously, never needs to be there, Like you can dress yourself, Danny.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I don't understand. That seems to me as a place
- 15:16Speaker 2: where they after they shower and get dressed, and then
- 15:21Speaker 2: they move on and then they move into a different
- 15:23Speaker 2: room if they're doing interviews or whatever, and maybe your
- 15:26Speaker 2: assistant is there, but your assistant is not holding your
- 15:29Speaker 2: balls or wiping your ass or whatever, like I don't understand.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I am sure there are plenty of sports people who
- 15:38Speaker 2: have a assistant who is of the opposite gender or
- 15:42Speaker 2: is the same gender, and doesn't necessarily want to be
- 15:44Speaker 2: standing in a room of men who were changing their clothes?
- 15:47Speaker 1: Why do you want to stand there? If I were
- 15:50Speaker 1: an assistant to a female athlete, I don't want to
- 15:52Speaker 1: go stand in the WNBA locker room while she's changed everyone.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Why would I want to be there?
- 15:57Speaker 2: I'll be outside, yeah, working. If give somebody a little
- 16:00Speaker 2: privacy while they're changing, all I can think about is
- 16:04Speaker 2: still Magnolias when they one of the I can't even
- 16:07Speaker 2: I think it was olympiad Caucus. Who's was in the
- 16:11Speaker 2: locker room as the guys are like changing clothes. She's
- 16:14Speaker 2: like an interviewer for like a radio.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Show or some do you know what it's?
- 16:20Speaker 2: And it's like naked tushies walking of rap anyway? Are
- 16:24Speaker 2: you ready to rate this movie?
- 16:25Speaker 1: Oh?
- 16:25Speaker 2: No?
- 16:25Speaker 1: I have one more?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Did you see though? Oh? Tell me? Finally?
- 16:28Speaker 1: The Internet car peep say that her car is misclassified
- 16:31Speaker 1: as a sixty five Mustang when it is in fact
- 16:33Speaker 1: a sixty eight Mustang. Goof I write it one star.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Oh I gave it one and a half. But I
- 16:40Speaker 2: don't even know why. I hated this movie so much.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Like hated it. It was real bad, maybe worse than
- 16:48Speaker 2: New Year's Resolution.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, it's you need You have given a
- 16:53Speaker 1: New Year's Resolution such a bum rap. You need to
- 16:57Speaker 1: rewatch it. That is your summer homework. Okay, it is
- 17:00Speaker 1: not even close to a one star movie, not even close.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Okay, we've watched so many worse movies than that. This
- 17:08Speaker 2: is terrible. This is straight up terrible. I can't believe
- 17:11Speaker 2: you made me watch those.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but thank you for listening to this episode
- 17:15Speaker 1: of Girls Gone Hallmark. If you love this podcast, we
- 17:18Speaker 1: love your five star ratings interviews. Please don't give us
- 17:20Speaker 1: one star like we just did for this movie. Open
- 17:23Speaker 1: the Apple podcast app, tap the five stars, and let
- 17:26Speaker 1: everybody know what you love about this podcast. We'll see
- 17:29Speaker 1: you next week.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Bye bye, luc
