- 0:07Hang on everybody, this could be the night that the Tigers take the tennis.
- 0:11A victory here for the Tigers.
- 0:13Our loss in Boston by the second place Baltimore Orioles will mean the 1968 America League Championship for the Detroiters.
- 0:21We've got a fine crowd, they're still coming in here.
- 0:24Excellent weather and a last minute picking change by the Tigers.
- 0:28Earl Wilson was scheduled to be the pitcher.
- 0:31He was warming up, felt a fringe in his right shoulder,
- 0:35and it was decided that Joseph Palmer would replace him as the Tigers starter against Stan Bunk.
- 0:41This is Ernie Harwell along with Ray Lane.
- 0:43Our engineer is Howard Sniptoe, and we are looking forward to the battle that may give the Tigers the tennis tonight.
- 0:52Right now we've got a message and then we'll be back with the starting lineup.
- 1:04Now for the lineup for the Stiglund-Hewsbury League.
- 1:07Okay Ernie, thank you very much and hello everybody.
- 1:10For the visiting New York Yankees leading off at second base,
- 1:14Horace Clark,
- 1:16Monty Sackett,
- 1:17and Tachin Jake Gibbs.
- 1:20the third hitter and first baseman, Mickey Mano.
- 1:25Bouting fourth, stationed in left field, Roy White.
- 1:30the fifth hitter and center fielder, Joe Pepitone.
- 1:37Bouting sixth, playing in right field, Bill Robinson.
- 1:43the seventh hitter and third baseman, Mike Ferraro.
- 1:50the eighth hitter and short drop, Gene Michael.
- 1:54And batting ninth, making the pitching start for the Yankees, Stan Bonson.
- 2:01To start the battle again for the New Yorkers, Bonson the pitcher and Gibbs the catcher.
- 2:09Now for the Detroit Tigers leading off at second base, Dick McCullough.
- 2:16Bouting second, stationed in center field, Mickey Stanley.
- 2:22the third hitter and right fielder, Jim Norquist.
- 2:29Bouting fourth, in left field, Willie Horton.
- 2:34the fifth hitter and first baseman, Norm Tash.
- 2:40Bouting sixth and catching, Bill Frehab.
- 2:47the seventh hitter, short drop, Tommy Macchett.
- 2:53Bouting eighth, and at third base, Don Wirt.
- 2:59And batting ninth, and making the pitching start for the Tigers, the right-hander, Joe Spana.
- 3:07And to start the battle again for Detroit tonight, Spana the pitcher, Frehab the catcher.
- 3:19Well, a little bit of a change in the starting assignments tonight.
- 3:22Earl Wilson scheduled a go for the Tigers on the bond.
- 3:26Earl came out, began to warm up, called his catcher and bullpen coach, Hal Maragon, to his side.
- 3:36Returned to the dugout, Spana emerged from the dugout, began to warm up.
- 3:41And we've had notifications from the training room that Wilson felt some clenches in the shoulder area of his floyd arm, and may have a sore arm.
- 3:53And so Joe Spana, who has been idle for some couple of weeks, first into action in the starting assignment tonight,
- 4:00trying to put the Tigers right on top as far as that American League tennis flag is concerned, clenching it tonight.
- 4:08And so a little bit ironic when you look back at the tough luck that Spana has had this season, not being able to be consistent.
- 4:19And tonight, the possibility of a strong pitching performance, if Joe can turn it in, to be a hero for the Tigers and helping them to clench the bent at tonight.
- 4:32Now the Tigers move out to their defensive position.
- 4:40Looking at Spana, this will be his 30th start of the year, his 32nd appearance of the season, and his 29th start to his completed six-ball game.
- 4:49He has won eight, lost 10, earned on average a 3.91 in 166 and one-third innings worth.
- 4:58Now gutters for our national anthem.
- 5:58They're talking about Spana and Joe making it official now, making his first start since September 2nd, with a second game for double-hudders.
- 6:24Now checking the record of a Yankee starter tonight, a fellow has had great success at a young career, and this year, for 1968, Dan Bonson has won 16-4th camps.
- 6:37And against the Tigers this season, one and all.
- 6:40Life mark in the Major League 17 and 11 for Bonson being around just a short time.
- 6:46Against the Tigers, as we mentioned this year, he's defeated them one time, and that stands as his lifetime mark of one and all.
- 6:58Tigers going pretty much with the same lineup.
- 7:00In fact, they are going with the same lineup they used last night when they dropped the Yankees 9-1.
- 7:06the Yankees are shaking up their lineup a little bit with Gibbs coming in as a catcher, Capitola tonight in center field,
- 7:12and there's Robinson in the right field, and Gene Michael getting the call at short drop, batting in the number 8 spot,
- 7:18as Michael playing the place of Tom Tresh, who is out of the Yankee lineup with Sparzens in the back.
- 7:27Some players are working this ballgame.
- 7:30Bill Kinnaman behind the play.
- 7:32That's Rusket, that's first base.
- 7:35Haksor, a second.
- 7:37And Nessie Kylak, a third base.
- 7:39Game number two of the three-game series, and it could be the clincher for the Detroit Tigers tonight.
- 7:45Stepping in, Horace Clark, the second baseman, once again, here's Ernie.
- 7:50Thank you, Ray Lane and Joe Sparman.
- 7:51And the very disorderly strike.
- 7:53We'll have a very enthusiastic crowd tonight as they are waiting for the Tigers to clinch the finish.
- 8:00It's been a great game all day long, and almost a capacity crowd at Tigers Stadium.
- 8:05Here's the fifth, gets the ball outside to Horace Clark.
- 8:09And we'd like to say hello to Tiger fans all around the world, this game being beamed by the Armed Forces Radio.
- 8:17Here's the windup and the fifth.
- 8:19He swings in the field, strike two on Horace Clark.
- 8:23He's holding the ticket too soon on a smoke serve.
- 8:26Clark batting 232.
- 8:29Special greetings to the people in the service of Uncle Sam, we're the United.
- 8:36Here's the pitch.
- 8:38Bring a line shot, right field, base hit.
- 8:40Drop it, comes to the glove side to field it, and Clark has let off the Yankee first inning with a single to right.
- 8:46Catch it, Jake Gibbs, the left-hand batting receiver from Mississippi.
- 8:51Steps in now.
- 8:54Gibbs batting 223.
- 8:57Boston got two in the opening inning, and they lead Baltimore 2-0 at the end of one.
- 9:02Red Sox 2, Baltimore nothing.
- 9:04A Red Sox victory will give the Tigers a finish.
- 9:09And they are one inning ahead of this game right now.
- 9:13Buckeye Joe Sperma on the mound, getting a surprise start.
- 9:16Here's the pitch, gets flung on and missed by Gibbs.
- 9:19Last time Sperma was in action was in September the 2nd, doubleheader Labor Day.
- 9:26That was out at Oakland.
- 9:29Clark has let off the Yankee first inning with a single.
- 9:32Gibbs being played in double play depth by the Tiger and fielders.
- 9:36Set by Joe, the right-hander looks over the first base.
- 9:39Clark has a good lead.
- 9:40the pitch, Gibbs swings, fly ball, set a field.
- 9:43Stanley racing back, he's there, he makes the catch.
- 9:46And going back to first is Howard Fox.
- 9:49Oh, there's one out, one on, and a great Mickey Mantle coming to back.
- 9:55Well, some say this may be the last series in Tigers' stadium for Mickey Mantle.
- 10:00the superstar of the Yankees.
- 10:02And listen to this round of applause as Mantle steps in.
- 10:13It's a very pleasant night tonight, rather warm for September in Detroit.
- 10:19Mantle batting left-handed.
- 10:22In field again in double play depth.
- 10:24There's no score.
- 10:25We're just underway in the opening inning.
- 10:26A man on first and one out for the Yanks.
- 10:28Strike call.
- 10:29Farmer's curve, got a car.
- 10:34Danny McRae will be the Tigers' pitcher tomorrow night against the Yankee ace, Mel Saddlemire.
- 10:41Farmer is appearing in his 31st game.
- 10:43He's 1-8 and lost 10.
- 10:48Not too long ago in a game in Cleveland, Joe had a few words with the male Smith.
- 10:53Now he's trying to win the hero's role.
- 10:55There's a bounding ball off the glove of McCallett.
- 10:57Back into short right, should have seen a Mantle is safe at first.
- 11:00Clark goes to second.
- 11:01the one hopper that McCallett's tried to short hop, he couldn't grab it.
- 11:05It hit the heel of his glove and bounded behind him.
- 11:07So the Yankees have two men on and one away.
- 11:10And Roy White, who's been their most consistent hitter lately, will be the batter.
- 11:16Right, another Smith batter hitting 275.
- 11:24And after White, it'll be the left-hander batting center fielder, Joe Capitone.
- 11:31In field, halfway up, and the pitcher White is fouled with a middle-bill freehand and out of it, strike one.
- 11:38Try to keep an eye peeled on that Baltimore Boston game.
- 11:42the Red Sox lead 2-0. the Orioles are batting in the second.
- 11:57Bounding ball up the middle, McCallett passes it over to Magic One, relay to Cag, double play by the Tigers.
- 12:08Short to first, the Tiger double play, forcing off the Yankee threat at the first half of the first inning.
- 12:15No runs, two hits, nor is there one man left.
- 12:18At the end of the half inning, it's the Yankees nothing, the Tigers are coming to bat.
- 12:24Well, the big double play, helping Joe Sparmer out of trouble.
- 12:27We've got a great crowd out here tonight.
- 12:29We've got a lot of loyal Tiger fans listening. We know that.
- 12:32We'd like to salute on the birthday today Mrs. George Steyer of Iowa, Michigan.
- 12:36She's a practicing seamstress in Faria.
- 12:39She reads four library books a week and roots for the Tigers in between.
- 12:43Mrs. Dahl-Sprow is 90 to 90, a fellow who lives here in Detroit, used to work at the stadium.
- 12:48And a wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Hesley Edwards of Royal Oak.
- 12:53Also our get-well wishes to Willard Baker of Ann Arbor, Tom Smith of Holland, Michigan, Leona Law Muscogee,
- 13:01Jim Kinsella of Windsor, a great Tiger fan, not feeling too well,
- 13:06and Roy Moore of Ann Arbor who's been a tremendous Tiger fan for a long, long time, and we wish her best to him.
- 13:13Well, Mr. Stan Bonson has been a tough pitcher for the Yankees, especially in the late stages of this tennis campaign.
- 13:20He's on the mound now, ready to pitch to Dick McAllister.
- 13:22Mac batting 2-5-2, he takes a curve in for a strike.
- 13:26Bonson is a tall, thin right-hander whose ability to keep the ball down is serving him in good stead this year.
- 13:34He pitched last year to Syracuse, he's from South Syrobluff, Iowa, and he's only 23 years old.
- 13:41He kicks in the middle of the fastball, hit on the ground, but after they hit by McCollough,
- 13:46Mac is on the lead-off single here on the opening inning.
- 13:56Well, the Tiger backs have been booming in the last several days.
- 14:00They've been hitting well ever since they began to hit the ball to Ann Arbor in California.
- 14:06And here's the set-up here to Mickey Stanley with a 2-6-3 mark coming to bat.
- 14:11Baltimore did not score in the second inning, so Boston is batting in the last half of the second,
- 14:16and the Red Sox leading Baltimore 2-0.
- 14:24Stanley takes the fastball high, ball one.
- 14:29Big group from the American Airlines out here tonight trying to root the Tigers in.
- 14:34And also from the AAA.
- 14:41Set by Boston, Stanley waiting, here's the pitch, overhand fastball.
- 14:45Whoa, he threw that one hard.
- 14:47Right under the 10, 2-0.
- 14:51Ray, we've got a different view on this fellow than we did at Yankee Stadium,
- 14:54and he looks a lot faster from this point of view than he did in New York.
- 14:58Certainly do, Ernie, working back a great distance further from the home point area at Yankee Stadium.
- 15:03And right now he's stuffing up some bullets up there to the Tiger hitters.
- 15:09Fans won five of his last six starts. Four of them were a complete game.
- 15:14It's a strike, and he gave them a breaking pitch.
- 15:18Two and one, McAllen and Stanley.
- 15:22Mickey Mantle holding on the back at first, but Dick McCallum.
- 15:25No score, first inning at Tiger Stadium.
- 15:27Tigers need a victory to get the pennant, or they need a loss of Baltimore to Boston and Boston.
- 15:33Try, a fastball over 2-2.
- 15:36I had a little smoke on it.
- 15:40Yankees had their streak broken yesterday by the Tigers after taking 10 straights.
- 15:45the Tigers have now won seven in a row.
- 15:48That's their second longest winning streak of the year.
- 15:50They have their longest streak of nine.
- 15:53There's the ball. Them close on Stanley.
- 15:55And finally we've got the full count.
- 15:57Well, this will be interesting to see, but McAllen goes down the pitch and out here with nobody out.
- 16:02Northup waiting at the on-deck circle.
- 16:05Second baseman Clark yelling in their Boston.
- 16:08Now over to Michael. He's shortstopped.
- 16:11Outfield is straight up on Mickey with a deep eye on McAllen.
- 16:15Mickey Mantle holds on the back with him.
- 16:17Mack edges off.
- 16:18He goes. the pitch he's swung on and fouled off.
- 16:20He's set him on 3-2 and the ball is fouled to the dirt by Mickey Stanley.
- 16:28Caught up leading out for the single has now hit safely in the last seven games.
- 16:36Great turnout here tonight and it's a very enthusiastic crowd.
- 16:44They're testing the climate for the penitentiary right here tonight.
- 16:47Here's the set.
- 16:48Here he goes. Mickey's swung on.
- 16:50A line drive to right and it'll be a double play.
- 16:52the ball is caught by Robinson.
- 16:53the caught up already is rounded second and he'll be doubled off with an easy toss to Mickey Mantle from the right fielder Robinson.
- 16:59So the hit and run backfire is into a double play when Stanley hits a sharp line drive to right fielder Robinson.
- 17:05Two out, nobody on and the batter will be Jim Northup.
- 17:10He hit the ball right on the nose, but it went directly to the goal of the right fielder Robinson.
- 17:17Here's Jim Northup with a 2-62 batting average.
- 17:21Boston did not score in the second, so Baltimore bats in the third and Boston leading the bird 2-0.
- 17:31Jim takes the curve from Stan Boston in close.
- 17:42There's another curve that's going over one and one.
- 17:49the Tigers were all ready to celebrate last night, but Baltimore didn't cooperate.
- 17:53They beat Boston.
- 17:56the Tigers will have to do it tonight.
- 17:58There's a swing and a miss on a fastball.
- 18:00One and two, the count on Northup.
- 18:10No score, Tigers Stadium, last half of the first inning.
- 18:13Two out and nobody on but a joy.
- 18:15Stan Boston, B-A-H-N-S-E-N, kicks from the leaders.
- 18:19There's a close one, another fastball, 2-2, the count on Northup.
- 18:31Breeze is blowing across from the right field corner toward the left, about the same breeze we had last night.
- 18:37the curve, they can pile to the on-dack circle.
- 18:41Now the count is still 2-2 on Northup.
- 19:00Now he gets his final, ready to deal to Northup, the 2-2 count, low and inside, ball free.
- 19:06the infield has a foul on the third.
- 19:08Michael is at shortstop.
- 19:09Clark expects Maddow at first.
- 19:11Michael playing short because the foul catch is still not quite recovered from the muscles
- 19:15causing these toughenings yesterday.
- 19:18Here's a pitch.
- 19:20Swinging the bounding ball to Maddow, Deep at first has a big hop for the Boston,
- 19:23and he gets it in time for the out on Northup, retiring the Tigers.
- 19:28No runs, one hit, no errors, nobody laughed at it.
- 19:31the end of one inning, it's Detroit loving New York nothing.
- 19:35Well here's Mr. Pepitone against Mr. Sparmer, and the pitch is a strike call, a curve over.
- 19:41Joe Pepitone and Joe Sparmer, not too many seasons ago they had a few angry words directed toward each other.
- 19:48Pepitone batting 2-46.
- 19:51It's a ball high, he ran up to zip the box and an offer on the pitch, so the count is even on tap, one-and-one.
- 19:58Yankees got a couple of men on in the first inning on singles by Clark and Maddow,
- 20:03but then a double play killed them off.
- 20:05Here's the pitch.
- 20:06It's a ball low, two-and-one.
- 20:08Then the Tigers got a lead-off single by McCarlett, but he was a race in the double play on the X-Run maneuver.
- 20:16So we've got a scoreless tie in the second inning at Tiger Stadium tonight.
- 20:20Here's the windup by Joe, the pitch, fastball, swung on it into left center.
- 20:23Stanley racing over, he is on the run and makes the count.
- 20:27Oh, Ricky reached up and pulled that one in like he was picking a peach off a tree.
- 20:37Horton was coming the other way, but it was Stanley's ball and he made it fairly easily.
- 20:42So there's one out and nobody on.
- 20:46And here is Bill Robinson, the right-hand batting right fielder, hitting 238.
- 20:59That called a fastball over.
- 21:01He's got that one in above the knee.
- 21:05Stands on top of the plate. Robinson does.
- 21:08Outfield straight away.
- 21:11Here's the ball outside, one-and-one, the count on him.
- 21:14It will be followed by Ferraro, the third baseman.
- 21:20Then Michael bats number eight and they pick your bounce and it's a nice hitter.
- 21:24Fastball hits the left field, down in the corner, Willie Horton going over.
- 21:27He'll have room next to catch for the rest.
- 21:49Here's Ferraro batting now.
- 21:52the game is scoreless from the second.
- 21:54Joe Sparler ready to deal to wind up the pitch.
- 21:57It's a ball in close, the fastball.
- 22:01F-E-R-R-A-R-O, Ferraro.
- 22:08He takes one in close and the county's two-and-oh on him.
- 22:15Mike was born in Kingston, New York about as in Fort Lauderdale.
- 22:19That's where he broke into organized ball at Fort Lauderdale.
- 22:23He swings a high hopper over the mound.
- 22:25Each second of the base will call it.
- 22:26It has the hopper, so it's passing time for the out.
- 22:31Three up and three down for the Yankees.
- 22:34And their second at the end of one-and-one-half innings.
- 22:36New York nothing to George Stubbitt.
- 22:40the gentleman who's been a great bag of hero all this year, Willie Horton.
- 22:43He'll lead off against Sam Boggsum.
- 22:46Willie has a 288 batting average.
- 22:49He's leading the team in batting percentage among the regulars.
- 22:53He has 86 RBI at the top in that department.
- 22:56And he's also the home run leader.
- 22:58He has 36.
- 23:00Baltimore did not score in the third inning.
- 23:02Boston batting in the last half of third.
- 23:04And the Red Sox lead the second place Orioles 2-0.
- 23:13Here the redneck applause getting started from this big crowd all around us here.
- 23:21And Boggsum on the mound.
- 23:22Willie Horton ready to step in against him.
- 23:34Bow ball on the screen.
- 23:35Hit out of play after that of Willie.
- 23:39He was a little ripped at that one, but he's out of the way.
- 23:55In the middle of October Willie celebrates his 26th birthday.
- 24:03Bow the wide up by Boggsum.
- 24:04A pitch in close on the inside corner, right through.
- 24:09Willie was falling away from that pitch, but he got the corner on him.
- 24:13His home run total now is the greatest he's had in any one season.
- 24:17He came in the four ball minor league or major league.
- 24:23Not too many years ago he was a 14-year-old catcher who played here in Tiger Stadium in a high school game.
- 24:33Back through the count on Will.
- 24:34Here's Boggsum's pitch.
- 24:36It's a fastball high, a little bit to the outside of the play.
- 24:39One ball, two strikes.
- 24:49Van Boggsum's all ten right-handed, pitching to Willie Horton.
- 24:53This game is shorted to the second inning.
- 24:58Here's the pitch.
- 24:59Bring a foul ball, deep come out the foul.
- 25:03Oh, he got the timber on that one, but he pulled it way up there in left field.
- 25:13That one had that good, clean crack to it.
- 25:26I think he's got a single from McCallup in the first inning up there on the hit.
- 25:29the Yankees had a couple of singles in their first inning by Clark and Mamo, but there's been no scoring yet.
- 25:35So here's Horton leaning and waiting on the next delivery.
- 25:39Suck him out.
- 25:40He tried to hold off.
- 25:41He's gone too far on a breaking pitch.
- 25:44the first strikeout of the game.
- 25:46Norman Tack coming to bat now.
- 25:54Norman's had a hot pick lately.
- 25:58Texan batting 257.
- 26:03And freehand will follow him to the plate.
- 26:09No score, second inning.
- 26:11Fast ball outside on Norman Norman, ball one.
- 26:24There's a strike on the count, even one and one.
- 26:32the month of September now, the Tigers have won 12 of their 15 games.
- 26:37the Tigers in the livers and Cass takes the curve that's wide, 2-1.
- 26:47Well, tomorrow we'll see Denny McLean, tomorrow night.
- 26:51Sits against Mel Sadelmar.
- 26:53Denny will be trying for win number 31.
- 26:56Here's the 2-1 fix.
- 26:58Cass takes a curve over but low.
- 27:01Gimstadty had a strike.
- 27:02He turns around to question the play down by Bill Kennaman for a moment.
- 27:06And it's a 3-1 count on Norman Tack.
- 27:11McLean can win tomorrow.
- 27:13He'll be the first major big pitcher since Leslie Grove to reach that 31 mark.
- 27:24Here's the windup now.
- 27:25the fix to Norman.
- 27:26Swung on a line shot to that field for a hit.
- 27:30Packing up the pick to give on 2-0.
- 27:32Here's the off field to White.
- 27:33Gimstadty has the second Tiger hit.
- 27:36Bill Freehand coming to bat.
- 27:39Bill is at play for him in the last seven games.
- 27:47Moves his average to 263.
- 27:49the Tigers have seemed a bit better this week than they have all season long.
- 27:54And their team batting average has risen six points in the last two weeks.
- 28:02No score in Tiger Stadium.
- 28:08Bonson, steps and 50s.
- 28:09It's a curve over above the knee.
- 28:12He had a big motion, a big kick, and the curve ball came in very slow.
- 28:16A neat changeup curve got across.
- 28:21Mantle holding on to that with Tack.
- 28:25Swing and a miss.
- 28:26Strike two.
- 28:27You ever notice how much those colors sound alike, catch and mantle?
- 28:33They're both from the same part of the country.
- 28:35Yeah, same quality in their voice.
- 28:40They're subtle alike too, don't they?
- 28:45Strike two.
- 28:46That's a count on Freehand.
- 28:49Bowled all out of play in the deep lower deck past the Yankee dugout.
- 28:55Norm, very active at least in the off season the past two years with cattle.
- 28:59I don't know whether he sold them all off or not.
- 29:01I don't know whether Mickey ever invested in the cattle game or not.
- 29:03Mickey went into the hotel business for a while now, taking some of the chicken business.
- 29:09Country kitchen.
- 29:11Mr. Tack has gone into the banking business.
- 29:13Banking business.
- 29:14We know where to get a loan now.
- 29:15From now to Texas.
- 29:16Perfect name for that business.
- 29:17Strike two.
- 29:26Freehand has a new bat stepping in.
- 29:29No score in second inning.
- 29:32One out, one on.
- 29:33A foul ball lined out of play down toward the Tiger Bull fans.
- 29:47Youth supply baseball.
- 29:49A little bit of a miss there.
- 29:50Gentlemen behind the plate.
- 30:00Get my Bonson the pitch, he takes the ball.
- 30:03One ball, two strikes.
- 30:07Terrific crowd tonight in the upper bleachers.
- 30:09One of the best turnouts here we've seen all season.
- 30:19No score in the second.
- 30:20Here's the set.
- 30:21Here's the pitch.
- 30:22It's a ball in close.
- 30:23That one had a little extra speed on it.
- 30:25Bonson seems to rear back once in a while and get a little extra on the pitch.
- 30:30Through that tight pitch to Stanley in the first inning and right there in freehand got one of that variety.
- 30:36Two-two to count on Bill.
- 30:38Jack John first, Mantle holding on the bag with him, one man down.
- 30:43Here comes, he swings and fouls it out of play.
- 30:46Time to change up fairly well but then foul it up.
- 30:50Here's a drive for that field, not deep enough.
- 30:53the strike is over in the corner of Exojet.
- 30:56Freehand is out and Cash comes back to first base.
- 31:01So the Tiger batter will be Tommy Magic.
- 31:05Short stop.
- 31:07Two out and one on.
- 31:12Boston did not score in the third so the Red Sox continue to lead Baltimore 2-0 with Baltimore batting in the fourth inning.
- 31:25the Pennsylvanian, Tommy Magic, in the plate hitting 2-0-7.
- 31:31It's a ball all the way, ball one.
- 31:34Well, we're glad to have Bob Rebels, the WJR, the sports director,
- 31:38Paul Carey, the assistant sports director.
- 31:42He got a timid end up here tonight.
- 31:44Here's a foul ball out of play.
- 31:46We can't miss the hay too much.
- 31:48Just one on each side.
- 31:52One and one, that's a count on Tommy Magic.
- 32:02No score.
- 32:03Neither team able to break through yet.
- 32:05the Yankees had a mild threat going in the opening inning and a double play killed that off.
- 32:10Tigers have had a couple of runners in that draw.
- 32:12Bonson delivers and Magic takes the fastball outside.
- 32:15Two-one.
- 32:20You may remember that Earl Wilson was scheduled to be the starting pitcher tonight for the Tigers.
- 32:24He came up with a twinge in the shoulder as he warmed up and Palmer was in sub to spoil.
- 32:29Here's a five-ball to left. It'll slice the foul territory out of play.
- 32:36Down in the corner and over the Tiger both back.
- 32:42Both Carrick coming back to the first base now.
- 32:44Magic returning to the plate.
- 32:52Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 32:54It's the second foul of the second inning. Number two is back.
- 33:00And a hit three, then two-two.
- 33:02Here's the pitch. Playing on a miss, he struck him out.
- 33:06That's the second strikeout at an end to the inning with no runs, one hit, no errors, and one man left.
- 33:13Now at the end of two in Tiger Stadium, Detroit loving, New York loving.
- 33:22And Michael, the six batting shortstop, will lead off one-time Dodgers.
- 33:26He was in the minor leagues about ten years before he made it from the Dodgers in 67,
- 33:30and then after one year there, he was traded through the New York Yankees.
- 33:34We're getting a little bit of a drizzle here at Tiger Stadium now.
- 33:39All the weather reports had told us that it wouldn't rain, but we're getting a drizzle now.
- 33:44From all outside, Michael, here's a pitch by Palmer's tight call.
- 33:49This is a very light rain at the moment. It doesn't seem to be bothering anybody too much.
- 33:54A few umbrellas have sprouted around the box seats.
- 33:59Now the windup by Joe, the pitch is a strike. He gave him a curve of car.
- 34:04One ball, two strikes on Michael. Michael hitting two-oh-two for the year.
- 34:14Palmer, the right-hander from Ohio State, a fast ball hit on the ground, passed the mound.
- 34:19A shortstop match. It's near second. Dodgers throw the catch. He's got it.
- 34:23One up and one out. And the batter now will be Stan Bonson, the pitcher.
- 34:29Bonson batting 0-56. He's the right-hand batter.
- 34:40Now that little rain, they just about left it.
- 34:49Tight call. Fast ball high.
- 34:52It's like one of those afternoon rains in Hawaii.
- 34:57Here's the windup now by Joe, the pitcher on the way.
- 35:00Strike on the outside corner. One-on-one on the pitcher, Bonson.
- 35:04This game is schooled. the Yankees are batting in the third.
- 35:09Maybe the planet clenched it tonight. Here's the pitch.
- 35:13Swing pop-up into the middle of the diamond, near the mound.
- 35:15Cash is calling for it. Just the first base out of the mound.
- 35:18Makes the catch for the out.
- 35:20So they are two up and two out. And the batter will be Clark who started the game of the singles.
- 35:29Harris-Clarke, another swift batter.
- 35:36Third year for the Yankees for this young man from the Virgin Islands.
- 35:44Waiting on farmers to deliver. Here comes. He takes the fast ball over the way.
- 35:56No score on the third.
- 35:59There's a pick and close, 2-0.
- 36:02Anything on Baltimore in the fourth inning yet? They're still batting.
- 36:06Baltimore is still batting at Boston.
- 36:08And the Red Sox have a 2-0 lead over the Orioles.
- 36:13Swing and a top foul between third and the hole.
- 36:15Wirt will have the room in front of the dugout.
- 36:18Makes the catch, finally foul.
- 36:22Nothing of cost for the second straight inning for New York.
- 36:25And at the end of the two and one-half inning, New York 7 to 2 are starting.
- 36:31Now here come the Tigers to bat now.
- 36:33And the third, Don Wirt, will lead off against Stan Boston.
- 36:36the game is scoreless. the totals are even right now for the two and a half innings.
- 36:40For each side, it's no runs, two hits, and no errors.
- 36:43Baltimore did not score in the fourth inning.
- 36:46So Boston is batting in the last half of the fourth.
- 36:48And the Red Sox lead. Baltimore 2 to nothing.
- 36:53Here's the little Pennsylvanian, Don Wirt, coming to bat.
- 36:56It will be followed by Joe Farber and then the top of the batting order, Nick McCarver.
- 37:01the work average is 198.
- 37:07Boston, Warrantons, and Fifties, and Wirt takes the curve in the dirt.
- 37:11Ball one.
- 37:25Tigers got a single from McCarver leading off from the first inning,
- 37:28a one-out single by Cash, and the second, they've not had a man pass first base against Boston yet.
- 37:35Now Don, waiting on the next pitch by the Yankee right-hander.
- 37:39Here it is, a curve over first site.
- 37:46Tigers have suffered four straight defeats only one time,
- 37:49and they did that at the hands of the Yankees this year.
- 37:52Here's the trick. It's a ball high, another breaking ball, two and one to count.
- 38:04Nobody out and nobody out in the third. No score yet.
- 38:07There's a bounding ball wide at third.
- 38:09Ferraro gloves it, fires over the mammal in time, and Wirt is out.
- 38:13the third baseman had to go wide to the glove side to make that play.
- 38:17Hey, don't go get them Tiger bumper stickers.
- 38:19You're going to be free of charge at your nearest bank, at the National Bank of Detroit.
- 38:30Now here's Farmer, who was bruised lustily before the game started,
- 38:33and now they are cheering Joe as he steps into that.
- 38:42Batting average, 107 for the Tiger Hurley. It's a strike, he took a curve across.
- 38:56One out and none are, no score.
- 38:58Fast ball hit on the ground to second base from the clock.
- 39:00Gobbles it up, throw over to Nicky Mantle in plenty of time.
- 39:03Two up and two men are out, and here comes McAuliffe, who has one of the two Tiger hits.
- 39:33Nick takes a curve that's too high, ball one.
- 39:43Nothing to batting, that's where it stands at Tiger Stadium.
- 39:45the Tigers have the bases empty and two down.
- 39:48So far, Bonson and Farmer are dueling away at each other.
- 39:52Now the motion by the Yankee pitcher.
- 39:54the pitch is a strike called, ever high fast ball.
- 39:57One and one, that's the count on that.
- 40:01the Yankee hits a single by Clark and a single by Mantle.
- 40:05On the Detroit hits, a single by McAuliffe and a single by Catt.
- 40:13Mack takes the ball, oh, two on the count.
- 40:16That was a fast ball from Stan Bonson.
- 40:30Now the windup by Mr. Bonson.
- 40:32the pitch is very high, a fast ball, three and one.
- 40:47Two down and nobody on the Tigers trying to get something started against this Yankee pitcher, Stan Bonson.
- 40:53That's Stan alliance, kicks the livers, it's a strike, a curve, a stop to McAuliffe.
- 40:59Shaking his head, turning and looking at gentlemen.
- 41:03And it's a full count on Mack.
- 41:08Each team with no runs to it, to no errors.
- 41:15Now Bonson is slowed up a little bit.
- 41:17Mack, back at the batter's box, waiting on a full count pitch.
- 41:20He swings and calls it out of play.
- 41:23Then over to the Yankee broadcasting booth, and it almost got the Yankee broadcaster Frank Nessar.
- 41:36Frank giving him the white handkerchief of surrender after that one.
- 41:44That was sort of a changeup curve.
- 41:45Mack waited and waited and waited too much and then fouled away.
- 41:48And a 3-2 pitch again, swung on a bounding foul ball on the ground down past Lonnie Moses.
- 41:53So it's still 3-2 on him.
- 41:59Great turnout tonight.
- 42:02Maybe a few of them still on the freeway coming into this.
- 42:15Now the motion by Bonson and the pitch.
- 42:18Mack swings the bounding ball on the right side, drives by Clark, they pick up, throw to Maddell, he's down.
- 42:23A fine play by Harris Clark.
- 42:25He went deep to his left, almost on the grass at right field.
- 42:28Grabbed that ball and another run through to Mickey Maddell and time to get to McAuliffe.
- 42:32Nothing across for the Detroiters, and at the end of three, New York-Thunder, Detroit-Thunder.
- 42:38No score in this time of stadium battle.
- 42:40We're going to the fourth inning now.
- 42:42Great play, good to join all you folks, and we'll all enjoy hearing from Lealee.
- 42:46Thank you, Ernie, and once again, hello everybody.
- 42:48Jake Gibbs, the Yankee catcher, steps in now.
- 42:51Left-handed hitter.
- 42:52Jake over one tonight, flying off the center field.
- 42:55As Joe Spada goes into the motion, here's the pitch.
- 42:58He's high with it, throw to Watt.
- 43:03the Yankees tag Spada for a couple of hits in the first inning.
- 43:06A single by Clark and a single by Maddell.
- 43:10That's that it.
- 43:12Flow curve is high, two and all.
- 43:14the catcher, Jake Gibbs, to be followed by Maddell and Monroe-White.
- 43:22Blomberg getting the call tonight.
- 43:24Manero Wilson, when he began to warm up, little twinge in the drawing hour.
- 43:29Twingy in the middle.
- 43:33Gibbs went after a fastball around the middle to cap that shot.
- 43:37the ball's blocked his protective batting helmet on a follow-through.
- 43:41Good one, McHugh.
- 43:46Flying the ball towards right.
- 43:50Here's the pitch from Spada.
- 43:51Bring it to the net, that's a hard curve ball, two and two.
- 43:56the Orioles did not score in the top of the fourth nor the red sox.
- 44:00So after four innings of play, Boston two, Baltimore another.
- 44:05Now the 2-2 pitch, service inside back to Mars.
- 44:08That one has about three and two.
- 44:14Now the 3-2 pitch, fastball heading to right center field.
- 44:17Moving over is Northam and Stanley. Stanley to center field and makes the put out.
- 44:24Stanley roamed to his left and that one.
- 44:27Now hits too deep, one out.
- 44:31Here's McEmanals.
- 44:41Maddow with a spring of the first inning batting left at it now against Joe Spada.
- 44:47Here's the pitch to the next.
- 44:48Ground ball, head to the left of McCallop, has it at the edge of the right field.
- 44:51That's the first in kind.
- 44:54McCallop after he went far to his left on the grass in right field.
- 44:59the second baseman came around and fired a shot to the guy.
- 45:04He got the cue away.
- 45:08And Norman better look at that old glove hand there.
- 45:10It might be stringing inside.
- 45:11That was thrown pretty high Joe.
- 45:16Here's Roy White, the left fielder, flick hitter batting left.
- 45:19That's a good spotter.
- 45:20Here's the pitch to him.
- 45:21It's low, a curve ball, ball wide.
- 45:24Yankees in the lineup tonight, Clark a flick hitter, Mantle, White.
- 45:28And Michael, short shot.
- 45:34the one-all pitch fastball hit on the air into center field.
- 45:37Backing up into his right of Stanley, still backing up.
- 45:39He's there now and he makes the guess.
- 45:41White flies out to center field.
- 45:45Yankees go down one, two, three on the fourth inning.
- 45:47And after three and a half innings of play, it's still Detroit nothing, New York nothing.
- 45:52Good morning.
- 45:54There come the Tigers, bottom of the fourth inning.
- 45:56No score in the ball game, no sculling off.
- 45:58But there are a number of two men in the lineup, Mickey Stanley.
- 46:01He'll be followed by Jim Northrop and then Willie Horton.
- 46:05Tigers with a victory tonight, could clench the American League tennis.
- 46:08Or if Baltimore were to lose their game in the Red Sox tonight, the Tigers would still clench that tennis.
- 46:15Bonson into the windup, here's the pitch.
- 46:17Ooh, a fastball, one on the miss.
- 46:20Back wide.
- 46:21Oh, he is a flamethrower.
- 46:23He's a very strong-listed Bonson. He can fire the password.
- 46:29One strike to Captain Stanley.
- 46:31Yankee right-handed into the windup, but the curve is low.
- 46:34One to one.
- 46:36There come the Tigers, bottom of the fourth inning.
- 46:38No score in the ball game, no sculling off.
- 46:40But there are a number of two men in the lineup, Mickey Stanley.
- 46:43He'll be followed by Jim Northrop and then Willie Horton.
- 46:47Tigers with a victory tonight, could clench the American League tennis.
- 46:50Or if Baltimore were to lose their game in the Red Sox tonight, the Tigers would still clench that tennis.
- 46:57Bonson into the windup, here's the pitch.
- 46:59Ooh, a fastball, one on the miss.
- 47:02Back wide.
- 47:03Oh, he is a flamethrower.
- 47:05Young Mr. Bonson, he can fire the password.
- 47:10One strike to Captain Stanley.
- 47:13Yankee right-handed into the windup, but the curve is low.
- 47:16One to one.
- 47:18Tigers with one more game to go against the Yankees.
- 47:27That'll be tomorrow night.
- 47:29Denny McClean against Mel Pfeffermeyer.
- 47:32One-one pitch is in there for a strike.
- 47:34A curve ball up the mother.
- 47:36One and two.
- 47:38Almost jammed back out here at Tiger Stadium tonight.
- 47:42Now to one-two delivery.
- 47:49Fastball is low and inside.
- 47:51Two and two.
- 47:53Bonson easy motion.
- 47:57He goes back before delivering that ball.
- 48:01Very easy motion going back with the arm in on it.
- 48:04He really guns that ball up the plate on the fastball.
- 48:07the next pitch, curve ball, one hop right back to the pitcher, left it.
- 48:10That's the first and that's all for Stanley.
- 48:12Bouncing out, pitcher to the first baseman.
- 48:15Bonson to the mantle, one hop.
- 48:17That'll bring up Jim Notchup.
- 48:20And we had a cute cartoon, a hand drive, sent in by a youngster today.
- 48:25Quite a nice drive.
- 48:27A good-looking Tiger there with a Tiger baseball cap on it.
- 48:31Bucket next to him says, Colonel Tiger's Kentucky flag cardinals.
- 48:35And it's looking good.
- 48:41Here's Notchup over what?
- 48:43Lays off the high pass when ball was.
- 48:50On Jack Willie Horton.
- 48:53the one-oh pitch.
- 48:55James gets it low.
- 48:56Two and oh.
- 49:00Tigers with a couple of hits off of Bonson and single by McCallum in the first inning.
- 49:04A single by Cash in the second.
- 49:09A two-oh pitch.
- 49:10the curve that hangs high.
- 49:12They've also strikes the captain, Notchup.
- 49:16the Baltimore Orioles did not score in the top of the fifth inning.
- 49:20After four and a half hundred to play it still, the Red Sox 2, the Orioles nothing.
- 49:30Now the three-oh pitch in there for a strike in the passman.
- 49:44Bucket inside, a clean ball for.
- 49:48Thompson gives up his first walk of the evening.
- 50:06Willie Horton stepping in the batter's box, digging in with that foot.
- 50:10Trying to get a good hold on the batter's box, not stepped out.
- 50:16Looked out at Kichadello, talking a third.
- 50:20Mantle playing at the bag against North of the first base.
- 50:24Filled with a fairly good size play right now.
- 50:28Now it's up to Gale, Bonson checks out the runner to the pitch.
- 50:31It's low ball one.
- 50:34What a year young Mr. Horton fed for the Tigers.
- 50:37Came into the ball game batting 288.
- 50:40Running fourth in the American League batting race.
- 50:45Runs that it in 85.
- 50:48Home run 36.
- 50:54Sets himself in the batter's box again.
- 50:56They're set by Bonson.
- 50:57No one to hold pitch.
- 50:58Turn it in there for a strike.
- 51:01Willie started to go and then laid off of it.
- 51:03Did not really fling.
- 51:05Picked the stride towards the pitch.
- 51:06Was at the letter, inside part of the play.
- 51:08What a loss.
- 51:11Norm cash on the.
- 51:23With the 36 home, he ranks number two.
- 51:25Home run, brother.
- 51:26Ranks number two in the American League.
- 51:27It's flinging a bit.
- 51:30Went after a pitch at the knees outside part of the play.
- 51:32What a view.
- 51:53Horton now back in that batter's box.
- 51:58Set by Bonson.
- 51:59One, two, pitch, fastball, look out, foul ball.
- 52:02Just getting a piece of that.
- 52:04Broadcast, look at that.
- 52:06This is course directed.
- 52:08WJR, Paul Cleary almost had one.
- 52:11There's a piece of ball.
- 52:12Another piece.
- 52:14No net, Paul.
- 52:21That's why we get hazard pay up here.
- 52:30Drops, one ball, two strikes.
- 52:35North of on the first base, one out.
- 52:39So one, two, pitch again.
- 52:41Fastball, half fling after.
- 52:43And Willie foul-gipped it.
- 52:45Back into the net again.
- 52:46Willie is standing there.
- 52:47Did not think he went over on it.
- 52:49But quite on fire, Bill Gennamann said, now you got a piece of the ball, a foul-gipped.
- 52:53And that's all for Horton down on site.
- 52:55Now it's Paul's mistake in identification.
- 52:58This is the Detroit Tigers baseball network.
- 53:01Norman, Norman Cash stepping in.
- 53:03Wakes on the first pitch.
- 53:05A high hop and fourth and second baseman class.
- 53:07He has his foot over to the second base.
- 53:09But Michael is your top covering the bag, and that's all.
- 53:12For the Tigers, as they force north of second baseman to the short stop.
- 53:16So the Tigers in the fourth inning, no runs.
- 53:18No hits, no errors.
- 53:20One man left to Andres.
- 53:21And after four innings of play, we still have a scoreless ballgame.
- 53:25They've played five innings at Fenway Park, and it's still Red Sox 2, Baltimore nothing.
- 53:39Right here at Tiger Stadium, Yankee nothing, Tigers nothing.
- 53:43Here's Joe Pemplejoh to face Joe Sparmer.
- 53:46the pitch is high, ball wide.
- 53:49Give him a fast ball, high and away.
- 53:51Peppertones over one, flat out to center field.
- 54:00the pitch to Deppie, swing and a miss.
- 54:02Went after the curve of Romney.
- 54:041-1.
- 54:09Sparmer trying to pick up his ninth one of the year.
- 54:12Starting this one tonight, he'd win Jim Walker.
- 54:15Got the surprise shot when Wilson came up with a twinge in his drawing arc.
- 54:20There's a pitch outside, gets away from Prehan off to his left.
- 54:232-1 to count to Peppertones.
- 54:25He'll be followed by Robinson and then Ferraro.
- 54:35Peppertones got a 2.46 left hander's hitter.
- 54:38Q on Kriktoe, goes after the curve, pumps it up into shallow right center field.
- 54:42Down to his left, he's there under it and makes the catch.
- 54:46Well, Peppertones flies out to the center fielder.
- 54:54Mickey's been a little busy out there in center field so far through four in a third inning.
- 54:59And he has recorded five put outs.
- 55:02One out for the Yankees and here's Bill Robinson, the right fielder.
- 55:05Bill played in center field last night.
- 55:07Right handed hitter.
- 55:10Curve pins outside.
- 55:12Robbie Star to go, Jackson dives.
- 55:17the Yankees still having high hopes from this young man that came out of the Braves organization,
- 55:21one that sent him to the Yankees quickly before your last year.
- 55:26Curve is outside, two balls, no strikes.
- 55:32Diggers, no runs, two hits and no errors.
- 55:34Yankees, no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 55:38Back to work, you old prick.
- 55:40Hit in the air in right field.
- 55:42Backing up is Tash, back settling by the line.
- 55:44He's under it and makes the catch about two steps in foul territory
- 55:48and about 75 feet down the line in right field.
- 55:53So Robinson fouls out to the first baseman, two downs.
- 55:57That'll bring up Ferraro, the third baseman.
- 56:05Farmer, since the single-bine mantle, has ducked down the last 12 Yankees in order.
- 56:13Has not recorded a strikeout, has not walked about it.
- 56:23Mike Ferraro, S-E-R-R-A-R-O.
- 56:27Good looking young infielder.
- 56:30Right handed hitter.
- 56:33Jokes up and at bat, sort of leans out over the play.
- 56:36Close down, pitch jump is inside, fast ball ball wide.
- 56:52Now the 1-0-30, strike hitter.
- 56:551-1.
- 57:00Well, the Tigers and Yankees in 16 previous meetings, all even.
- 57:04Eight wins and eight losses for eight clubs.
- 57:071-1-30 curve, a high hopper to word of third.
- 57:09Hafford, he'll have to hurry.
- 57:11In time, the catch.
- 57:13All work to do is wait for that high hopper to come down to him,
- 57:17then he gunges over the first and time.
- 57:19Three up and three away for the Yankees.
- 57:21After four and a half, he's a quiet still.
- 57:23Detroit nothing, New York nothing.
- 57:28Now we've had several inquiries about the Go-Get-Em Tigers fight song.
- 57:32People want to know how to get a copy of it.
- 57:34Well, the best way probably will be to wait until the official Tiger
- 57:37highlight album comes out.
- 57:39the fight song will be included along with all the highlights of this year's
- 57:42Panadrive.
- 57:44It'll be ready at the end of the season.
- 57:46And it'll be called the year of the Tiger 68.
- 57:49As soon as we have more information on it, we'll pass it along.
- 57:52Here's freehand.
- 57:53They'll take the first pitch high, ball one.
- 57:58Oakland and Chicago playing a finite double header.
- 58:01the White Sox won the first game, 2-1.
- 58:05Thompson back to work now.
- 58:07the curve is taken for a strike, 1-1.
- 58:10In that White Sox open ball game, Chicago two runs late, hits no errors.
- 58:14Oakland one run five, hits in one error.
- 58:16Paul in the winner, Nass to lose it, the first to two.
- 58:19the next pitch to freehand, curve ball that hits the left, big hit.
- 58:22That one bouncing between the shortstop and third baseman and going into left field.
- 58:27And freehand checks in with his first hit of the evening, gets him one for two.
- 58:32That's the third Tiger hit.
- 58:36And here's Tommy Metcalf.
- 58:44Bobby playing a lot of shortstop these days for the Tigers, left-handed hitter.
- 58:50the Tigers have used three primarily at the shortstop position this year,
- 58:53Euler, Zuzinski, and Tommy Metcalf.
- 58:57Set by Thompson, here's the pitch.
- 58:59Fastball is outside.
- 59:02If there was one fault that you could find with this young right-hand scorer for the Yankees,
- 59:07if, we say, got the good job, good control, good fastball, good curve,
- 59:12he has been a little bit unable to control himself as far as pacing himself.
- 59:16Slow over the second and they get matched at fire step.
- 59:20A slow roller that Clark had to come in the second base and got up at the grass,
- 59:23flipped underhand at the mantle of first base and finally got matched at.
- 59:28Tommy out second at first, freehand moved to second on the play.
- 59:32Freehand becomes the first Tiger runner as far as second base tonight.
- 59:38Bring it down work.
- 59:46Down it goes for one.
- 59:47Bounce out third to first, leading off on the third inning.
- 59:56Thompson looks in again to the side, offset to work, second, pitchers.
- 59:59Good ball is hit up in the air in the left field.
- 1:00:02There's left, the left fielder, White, has the room.
- 1:00:04He's under it and makes the put out.
- 1:00:06Still back into the infield, freehand holds the second base.
- 1:00:10Ruthie's white, but the left fielder, White.
- 1:00:12Here I am.
- 1:00:15It's just Spana, and Joe has certainly been strong so far tonight.
- 1:00:31This is Spana tonight, 0-1, bounce out second and first.
- 1:00:38Joe's had six hits this season and 57 just to the plate.
- 1:00:43One, a double.
- 1:00:46Right-handed hitter as Thompson sets the pitch.
- 1:00:50A stop by ball to center field, base hit.
- 1:00:52White had it on third.
- 1:00:54Pippa-Torn bobbles the ball and one run in for the Tigers.
- 1:00:58Spana singles to center field, the Tigers lead 1-0.
- 1:01:15Kepa-Torn bobbles that ball momentarily out on center field.
- 1:01:19However, freehand had already made the turn at third base.
- 1:01:22Probably in all probability, but of course, Spana stopped his first base.
- 1:01:27Joe, a former Buckeye from Ohio State, helping his own cars tonight,
- 1:01:33drives in the first run of the ball game with a soft line ball to center field.
- 1:01:39Top of the batting order, Dick McDonough sets in to pitch the max.
- 1:01:44Right pass ball, outside corner.
- 1:01:51It's Spana, his second RBI of the season.
- 1:01:56Got the warm-up jacket on that first base.
- 1:01:59Two out here in the Tiger fifth inning.
- 1:02:02Set by Bonson, the pitch.
- 1:02:04Danger, bring it a minute.
- 1:02:07Pitch strikes, the count to McDonough.
- 1:02:10He's tried to unload that guy.
- 1:02:14Last report we had out of Boston, Red Sox 2, Orioles nothing.
- 1:02:19They had completed five innings.
- 1:02:30Pitch strike pitch, low curve is outside.
- 1:02:33That's a knee, one or two.
- 1:02:44Well, I think every run the Tigers get tonight,
- 1:02:46they might add one ice cube in the clubhouse.
- 1:02:49Bounce to the first foul.
- 1:02:53One or two, still a count.
- 1:03:06the Orioles did not score at the top of the sixth.
- 1:03:09So after five and a half innings, Red Sox 2, Orioles nothing.
- 1:03:14the pitch to McDonough, foul off, back to the three.
- 1:03:17One or two.
- 1:03:23Here at Tiger Stadium this year against the Yankees,
- 1:03:25the Tigers have won five, the Yankees have won twice.
- 1:03:28But Yankee Stadium, the Tigers won three games and dropped six.
- 1:03:33And of course, the last time they visited Yankee Stadium
- 1:03:36turned out to be embarrassing as the Yankees took four straight.
- 1:03:39Tigers trying to get back some revenge in this area,
- 1:03:42as well as Quince the Bennett.
- 1:03:44Set, one, two, pitch.
- 1:03:46That's ball outside, 2 and 2, the captain of colors.
- 1:03:57Back out of the batter's box.
- 1:04:00Now steps himself.
- 1:04:02Left-handed hitter, open stance, lane back,
- 1:04:06way through on the pitch, ping and a miss on a low curve,
- 1:04:08struck him off.
- 1:04:09Strikeout number four for Bonson.
- 1:04:11That's all for the Tigers in the fifth.
- 1:04:13However, they come up with one run, two hits, no errors,
- 1:04:16one man left, Andre.
- 1:04:17After five innings of play, Tigers won Yankees nothing.
- 1:04:26Well, we'd like to send out our best wishes and certainly
- 1:04:29big Tiger greetings to all the folks at Sheath Haven
- 1:04:33and the Lafayette Convalescent home around the front area.
- 1:04:37We know that we have many Tiger fans there and certainly
- 1:04:40Tigers begin to see me.
- 1:04:50Hey, Michael, a short shot to lead off of the Yankees.
- 1:04:56Foot hitter, batting left-hand against Bama.
- 1:04:58He's over one, rounded out, short to first.
- 1:05:01That was back in the third inning.
- 1:05:05Out go, lines and deals.
- 1:05:07That's been a thinking fastball, back large.
- 1:05:23One strike to Lippie, foul tipped back into the middle freehand,
- 1:05:37two strikes.
- 1:05:40Now Michael back in there, not even with the play.
- 1:05:44Feet almost close together.
- 1:05:46Backed off of a high hard one at the shoulders, one and two.
- 1:05:57Tigers lead one to nothing.
- 1:05:59One run four hits no air.
- 1:06:00Yankee toe runs two hits no air.
- 1:06:02the next pitch, a bouncer towards McCall of a second,
- 1:06:05comes in, gloves it, throws to first.
- 1:06:07They get Michael by a couple of steps.
- 1:06:15Well, I'd like to send my hello along the Armed Forces Radio Network
- 1:06:20tonight here in Detroit to all of our servicemen overseas
- 1:06:24and around the world, hoping that tonight's broadcast will give you
- 1:06:28just a little touch of home and hope to see you back in a safe field too.
- 1:06:33Dan Bonson, the pitcher's got you now.
- 1:06:35Here's a pitcher's bat, a strike of the name of the fastball.
- 1:06:39Now we're talking about the Armed Forces, a fellow from the Compton, Michigan area,
- 1:06:44celebrating the birthday over in Vietnam.
- 1:06:48Curve is outside.
- 1:06:50One ball, one strike.
- 1:06:53Go to Ken Wise of the Compton, Michigan area.
- 1:06:57Now the Saigon overseas in Vietnam,
- 1:06:59a very happy birthday from the folks in Detroit and from Tiger Stadium.
- 1:07:04Now the one-one pitch.
- 1:07:05It's low.
- 1:07:07Two balls, one strike.
- 1:07:13Fama has stepped down the last 14 in order.
- 1:07:19Two-one pitch.
- 1:07:20Low.
- 1:07:22So he runs the count of the pitcher, three and one.
- 1:07:30Tigers now for the month of September have won 12 games.
- 1:07:32They've lost three.
- 1:07:3443 games over the 500 mark.
- 1:07:38Fama back to work.
- 1:07:39Three-one pitch.
- 1:07:40the high sales run almost over the head of Bonson.
- 1:07:44Bonson's going to take a quick look out at Gill and then touch down to first base.
- 1:07:48That is not in the pitcher's patented.
- 1:07:51That's out of the pitch.
- 1:07:54First walk given up by Fama.
- 1:07:56Conference off the mound, freehand and Fama.
- 1:07:59Time call now.
- 1:08:00First base coach, Whitey Ford, has gone over the dugout,
- 1:08:02brings back the warm-up jacket for Bonson.
- 1:08:05One out, runner at first, the count of the batting order, the second baseman, Horace Clark.
- 1:08:18Large-footed hitter, he's batting 232.
- 1:08:20the left-handed hitter, 230, and the right-handed hitter, 238.
- 1:08:24Batting left-handed, slightly open stance, third job.
- 1:08:31Set by Fama, the pitch, swing and a miss, one strike.
- 1:08:37Activity now, the tag is open, the right-hander, Pat Johnson begins to throw.
- 1:08:41Pat was throwing in the Yankee first inning when they collected a couple of singles off of Fama.
- 1:08:46Now it goes back to work.
- 1:08:49Tag playing behind the runner at first base, the pitcher, Bonson.
- 1:08:53Set by Fama, inside with the passing, one-a-wide.
- 1:09:03Danny McClain to go to Mauna for the Tigers after his 31st victory of the year.
- 1:09:08It'll be a safety now for Troutelmeyer, a 20-game winner for the Yankees.
- 1:09:14Now the one-one kick.
- 1:09:15Half swing and a curve, it was in the dirt.
- 1:09:17He checked in time, two balls, one strike.
- 1:09:22the Tigers have not used a relief pitcher in their last 10 games, coupling 12 days.
- 1:09:29the last pitcher to be used in relief was Pat Johnson on September 4th when the Tigers played out an open.
- 1:09:39Two-one kick, the Clarks, round ball, hit the catch.
- 1:09:41He drops it, goes to second for one, throw back to first not in time.
- 1:09:44Clarks with that good speed, dips down the baseline.
- 1:09:48However, the Tigers do get one if they get the lead runner, Bonson, to cut down first baseman
- 1:09:53to the shortstop, covering the bag at second.
- 1:09:56Clarks on with a field of strike.
- 1:10:00Two-out for the Yankees.
- 1:10:05the batter is Jake Gibbs.
- 1:10:13They're talking about the relief pitchers not being used in the last 10 games, 12 days.
- 1:10:20Johnny Warden, Tigers young left-hander, was asking the United,
- 1:10:24well how many scoreless innings do I have now?
- 1:10:26I said about 90.
- 1:10:28I haven't given up a hit either.
- 1:10:32He had the left-handed hitter.
- 1:10:360-2 tonight, both times flying out the center field.
- 1:10:39Clarks with good speed at first with a pretty good lead.
- 1:10:41That's the pitch, fastball, taken for a strike inside corner.
- 1:10:53Clarks with 16-kilometer bases on the field.
- 1:10:56Two-out.
- 1:10:58He represents the time, but the Tigers lead 1-0.
- 1:11:02Cag guarding the bag at first, trying to hold the runner close,
- 1:11:05a set by Spama.
- 1:11:11Steps off the slab.
- 1:11:12And when he does that, Gibbs steps out of the batter's bag.
- 1:11:22Now Joe back to work.
- 1:11:23Stretches, checks the runner, there goes the runner, a swing and a miss.
- 1:11:27Now the drop check Clarks left between first and second.
- 1:11:30Go down on that check.
- 1:11:31He's rolling him back to first.
- 1:11:32He's put back to Cag.
- 1:11:35Now Cag chasing him back to second.
- 1:11:36McCallum in the act now.
- 1:11:37And Mack puts the tag on him.
- 1:11:39Well, it took a little while, but they got him.
- 1:11:42As it was the catcher to the shortstop, to the first baseman,
- 1:11:47to the second baseman.
- 1:11:49Freehand, Mack, pass to Mackic.
- 1:11:52And they nailed Clark on the attempt to steal.
- 1:11:56Gibbs swinging and missing, and then Clark,
- 1:12:00a good job deciding to try to get back to first base,
- 1:12:02but it was finally run down, closed down to Yankee's base.
- 1:12:06No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on base.
- 1:12:08After five and a half innings, Tigers won.
- 1:12:11Yankee's nothing.
- 1:12:12Keep him loaded.
- 1:12:19Tigers coming about here in the bottom of sixth inning.
- 1:12:23Nicky Stanley to lead it off.
- 1:12:24He'll be followed by Northup and then Willie Horton.
- 1:12:27Tigers in front, London of it.
- 1:12:31Trying to clench the American legs on it tonight.
- 1:12:37A win for the Tigers would do it.
- 1:12:39Or a loss for Baltimore would do it.
- 1:12:44the pitch to Stanley, a strike at the knees, gave him a curve ball.
- 1:12:49Nicky has lined out to right field.
- 1:12:51It's a law very sharply in the first inning when he lined out.
- 1:12:54And that got McCullough off of that first base,
- 1:12:57and they doubled up Max on the play.
- 1:12:59And then Stanley bounced that pitcher to the first base and in the fourth.
- 1:13:04Monson's curve is high this time, what it was.
- 1:13:15Stanley's out in 259, one-one pitch, Joe.
- 1:13:19Holds up on a curve that broke outside.
- 1:13:21Monson not liking the curve, sort of shaking his head,
- 1:13:24and kind of on the play down fire.
- 1:13:26Two balls, one strike.
- 1:13:31Tigers started the ninth activity with a team body mark of 235.
- 1:13:38Ah, the two-one pitch.
- 1:13:39Fly ball hit into center field, which left his cup at down.
- 1:13:43He's there and he knocks the gap.
- 1:13:45And Joe had to go a little bit towards right center to bring it down.
- 1:13:50Stanley flying out to the center fielder, one out, and that brings up Jim Norschup.
- 1:13:58Boy, I hear Stichel's name coming from somewhere.
- 1:14:04There's Jim Norschup.
- 1:14:06Bob got first base into the pitcher, picked up a walk.
- 1:14:10Over walk.
- 1:14:14Left counter hitter takes the curve inside, ball locked, yet the outfield play him straight away.
- 1:14:20the infield shifted towards the first base side.
- 1:14:25One-all pitch.
- 1:14:26Change up a high hopper into Clark Clough.
- 1:14:29the second baseman fires the first, nobody covering first base.
- 1:14:32And at the last second, the pitcher, Monson, decided to go over there,
- 1:14:36and Norschup is face at first.
- 1:14:39That'll be an infield single.
- 1:14:42Now, now with the playing back, he did not offer to go to the back.
- 1:14:47Monson got a wake shot from the hill, and Norschup raced into the back and beat him by a couple of steps.
- 1:14:54Clark should have had his man, but there's nobody there in time to make the play at first.
- 1:14:58Infield single for Norschup.
- 1:14:59the batter is Willie Horton.
- 1:15:02That's a tiger's fifth hit off of Monson.
- 1:15:09There's a gentleman parading on the third base side behind the box feet.
- 1:15:14Coming all the way there with a tiger outfit on, a big tiger head.
- 1:15:19Behind him, a youngster with a J.
- 1:15:22Now, the pennant fever rising here tonight at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:15:26And you can certainly tell the symptoms tonight, friends.
- 1:15:29Here's Willie Horton.
- 1:15:31Ground ball to Michael Eccordi.
- 1:15:32Clark hits the second for one.
- 1:15:34Clark's throw to first.
- 1:15:35In time, double play.
- 1:15:36Short stop, second baseman to first.
- 1:15:39That's all for the Tigers in the sixth.
- 1:15:41No runs, one hit, nowhere.
- 1:15:42Nobody left on base.
- 1:15:44After six innings of play, it's still the Tigers one.
- 1:15:46the Yankees up.
- 1:15:52Six and a half innings at Fenway Park, and the Red Sox continue to lead the Orioles.
- 1:15:57Right here at Tiger Stadium, Detroit one.
- 1:16:00Yankees nothing.
- 1:16:01They go to the top of the seventh.
- 1:16:03the batter is Gibbs.
- 1:16:04the old announcer is Ernie Harwell.
- 1:16:07Thank you, Ray Lane.
- 1:16:08Here we go.
- 1:16:09Joe Farmer ready to go to work.
- 1:16:10He's allowed no runs and two hits.
- 1:16:13Gibbs is 0 for 2.
- 1:16:15He takes the fast ball over.
- 1:16:16Ball one.
- 1:16:17Gibbs has hit the ball to Sutterfield.
- 1:16:18His family, he's trying to make it.
- 1:16:19He's had five foot outs out there.
- 1:16:20He's been busy.
- 1:16:21Farmer has fixed an unusual game in one way.
- 1:16:24He's not struck out anybody.
- 1:16:26And he's walked one.
- 1:16:27Here's the pick.
- 1:16:28Swung out a high hopper over the man on Matthew Chargy.
- 1:16:30Across second.
- 1:16:31Grabbed it.
- 1:16:32Right at first, you've got him.
- 1:16:33Gibbs is out.
- 1:16:34George is the first.
- 1:16:35Matthew's had a long way to go on the high hopper.
- 1:16:38the balls seem to be bounding a little higher than they normally do on the skin of the infield
- 1:16:44and the surface around the home plate area tonight.
- 1:16:49So here's the great Mickey Manos tapping in.
- 1:16:56Manos single in the first inning, one of the two hits.
- 1:16:59He bounced him a corner for the next trip.
- 1:17:02Takes a curve ball in close to the feet.
- 1:17:05Ball went on Mickey.
- 1:17:10Fine turnout tonight.
- 1:17:12the Tigers lead one to nothing.
- 1:17:13They score them a fifth inning.
- 1:17:16Single by Freehand, a bounce out by Magic.
- 1:17:18Got a two-out single by the Fitch's Farmer.
- 1:17:20Drove him home.
- 1:17:21Strike called.
- 1:17:22A breaking ball above the knees.
- 1:17:24One-on-one mick out on Mickey Manos.
- 1:17:26One out in the seventh inning.
- 1:17:34Joseph Farmer gets his five from Freehand.
- 1:17:36the pitch.
- 1:17:37Fast ball it back to Jolo.
- 1:17:38He drops it.
- 1:17:39Here's the top to catch in time and Manos is out.
- 1:17:42Two down and the Yankees seven.
- 1:17:45And Roy White coming to back.
- 1:17:47Roy hit into a double play in the first inning, one of the big plays of this game so far because
- 1:17:52the Yankees at that time against Farmer had two men on and only one out.
- 1:17:56They had two singles.
- 1:17:58And then White hit a ground ball to McCallips and threw to Magic for one and then over the
- 1:18:02catch to the double play.
- 1:18:04White, up among the American big leaders, started the game hitting T-75.
- 1:18:08Starting rough at it, hits a five-ball to the left center.
- 1:18:11Horton going back.
- 1:18:12Stanley backing him up.
- 1:18:13Winning it.
- 1:18:14the catch.
- 1:18:15Five-three-five.
- 1:18:16Nothing of cost for New York in the seventh inning.
- 1:18:18And at the end of the first half of the seventh, Tigers won the Yankees number.
- 1:18:23Ernie Harwell and Ray Lane at Tigers Stadium.
- 1:18:33the big crowd here.
- 1:18:34Tigers fans.
- 1:18:35Hoping for the crunch of the night.
- 1:18:38Standing now on the traditional seventh inning stretch.
- 1:18:41Time to be paraded over the ballpark and right now we'll have a chance to take our collective breath.
- 1:18:47Norman Cash will lead off against Boston.
- 1:18:49Both these pitches have gone all the way.
- 1:18:51Farmer is surprised.
- 1:18:52Started for the Tigers after Wilson came up with a twinge in the shoulder while warming up before the game.
- 1:18:57And Boston on the mound for the Yankees.
- 1:18:59Here's the foul off to that of Norman.

- 1:27:24Magic was able to go deep to his right, get the glove on the ball and that was all.
- 1:27:32So the batter now will be Ferraro, the third baseman with the man out and the man out.
- 1:27:40Outfield is straight up on Mike Ferraro.
- 1:27:43the rookie third backer.
- 1:27:47They brought him back the first of September from the Syracuse Ball Club.

- 1:29:35No running for it, no errors and nobody left.
- 1:29:37And at the end of the first half of the eighth inning it's Detroit one New York nothing.
- 1:29:54Here come the Tigers to bat in the eighth inning and they are leading the Yankees, Tigers one New York nothing.

- 1:31:18Here's a strike called, swung on and missed by Joe.
- 1:31:22Tried to hold up his swing but it's gone too far.
- 1:31:30There's a cap, a hit, swung it to a third, Bararo gloves it, here's the soft to mammal and he is out in first base.
- 1:31:36Mickey had to come off the back and tag the runner, Farmer coming down the line.
- 1:31:41Well there are two down in the Tiger eighth inning and Dick McAllis will be the batter.
- 1:31:51Tigers lead one to nothing, maybe the victory they claim to finish.
- 1:32:04Now umpire Ketterman wants to look at the ball again, bounce and bounces this one into it.

- 1:33:41Mickey had to come off the bag and tag the runner, Farmer coming down the line.
- 1:33:47Though they are two down, a Tiger eighth inning and Dick McAllis will be the batter.
- 1:33:56Tigers lead one to nothing, they lead a victory, they clinch the tennis.
- 1:34:10Now on Park Edelman, watch the look at the ball again, bounce and bounces this one into it.

- 1:36:32McAllis on his first base, set by Bartson's pitch, Stanley hits the line, the shot's off, Michael gloves it and the inning is over.

- 1:38:36And then they go to the top of the batting order. It's a strike to turn the ball.
- 1:38:43the Tigers lead one to nothing in the ninth inning. Three outs away from flinching the finish.
- 1:38:53Manor and first is Hauser leading off. Gash holding on the back of it.

- 1:39:42One down, one on in the Yankee ninth inning.
- 1:39:46Two outs to go for the pennants. And the batter will be Harris Clough.
- 1:39:52Harris is quick batter batting left-handed. He's had a single, has fouled a third, and hit into a fourth foul.
- 1:39:58Takes the ball, low and in the dirt, blocked by freehand. Ball, one on five.
- 1:40:17Now the set by Joe.
- 1:40:41And the pitch, flung on a bounding ball to McCalloch. He gloves it. Ball recovers. the throw is in time for the outs.
- 1:40:48A very close play and it'll be an argument on that one.

- 1:40:55Bidey forward. It's raging. So is Clough.
- 1:40:58Man on second and two down.
- 1:41:01the play went for McCalloch to Sparmer who got there just in time to make the putout.

- 1:41:25On the play, Howeserson, second base.
- 1:41:28the play will be the second baseman of the pitcher coming for the second out.
- 1:41:35And the batter will be Jake Gibbs when this argument subsides.
- 1:41:49Well, Sparmer now has to get this again.
- 1:41:54the potential tying run for the Yankees at second base.
- 1:41:59the argument is over.
- 1:42:02McCalloch was caught on a bang bang play at first base.
- 1:42:06So this big crowd out at seed yelling for Sparmer to get the last man and to bring the pennant home to Tiger Stadium for the first time since 1945.
- 1:42:20Listen to that crowd.
- 1:42:22Here's the set by Joe and Gibbs takes the ball outside of all one.
- 1:42:35the outfield is around the right. the next batter is Mickey Maddow.

- 1:54:34And as Penny is coming out of the Yankee dugout and walking to the mound.
- 1:54:49And we're going to get a new Yankee pitcher.
- 1:54:58And like Lindy McDaniel, the right-hand releaseer coming on.
- 1:55:11And Gates Brown is coming up the dugout step for the Tigers.
- 1:55:27Bryce, I assume, was announced so he'd be in the ball game.
- 1:55:32Gates is going to be announced now.
- 1:55:49Lindy McDaniel, the refugee from the National League taking over for the Yankees.
- 1:56:01And Gates Brown will be the batter.
- 1:56:09Gates has a fence batter only, it's hitting 459. For the entire season hitting 372.
- 1:56:32McDaniel taking his tune up top there.
- 1:56:37He's been a very sharp leaper since coming to the Yankees. He's won three and lost one.
- 1:56:53Gates Brown getting a cheer as he comes to that mound.
- 1:57:12Now here's Gates Brown batting now with a chance to knock in the winning run.
- 1:57:16Two men on and two men out. Came on at second and freehand on at first base.
- 1:57:21It's the nice hitting. And the pride of Tessline, Ohio, at the plate.
- 1:57:26McDaniel delivers, it's a ball outside.
- 1:57:32A face hit from Lewis right here, one-to-one tie.
- 1:57:43Now the set by McDaniel. And the pitch, it's a high one, ball two.
- 1:57:54He's in there with two men on and two men out.
- 1:57:58First two men were retired. A walk to K-line, a single by freehand.
- 1:58:06It's a ball, oh, freehand, oh, that's a down. On deck is Don Wirtz.
- 1:58:25K-line at second base represents the winning round, the 3-0 pitch.
- 1:58:31Ball in front, he gets a walk. Well, the Tigers have loaded the bases in the ninth inning.
- 1:58:41And Don Wirtz will be the batter.
- 1:58:45Wirtz has bounced to third, fly to left and fly to center.
- 1:58:51Three men on, two men down.
- 1:58:55Tigers with a chance to win it right here, one-to-one tie in the ninth inning.
- 1:59:00Don Wirtz batting against McDaniel.
- 1:59:06the outfield is straight away, the infield bat.
- 1:59:10the windup and the pitch, he takes the ball in high, ball one.
- 1:59:28McDaniel on the bound, ready to deal again.
- 1:59:31Where does it play? K-line is the winning run over their third base.
- 1:59:36Here's the windup, the pitch is high, football two, two adults.
- 1:59:43K-line breaking down the line that time.
- 2:00:02Now waiting on a 2-0 delivery.
- 2:00:06Here's the windup and the pitch is the strike call, two and one.
- 2:00:24Two down, three men on, game tied, one-to-one in the ninth inning.
- 2:00:28the pitch, Wirtz swings a foul, fly it will be out of play, 2-2 to count on Don.
- 2:00:42Now this big crowd here ready to break loose.
- 2:00:45Three men on, two men out, game tied, one-to-one in the ninth inning.
- 2:00:51McDaniel checking his time with Jake Gibb.
- 2:00:55Lee Paul, right-hander, ready to go to work again.
- 2:01:00And the windup and the pitch, he swings a line shot, base hit, right field, the Tigers win it.
- 2:01:06Here comes K-line to score and it's all over.
- 2:01:09Don works singles, the Tigers mobbed on, K-line is scored, the fans are steaming on the field,
- 2:01:16and the Tigers have won their first pennant since 1945.
- 2:01:21Let's listen to the bad numbers here at Tigers Stadium.
- 2:01:37the Tigers are being mobbed as they go to their dugout.
- 2:01:41They'll hardly make it.
- 2:01:43Confetti in the air, fireworks in the air, and the crowd continues to yell,
- 2:01:50constantly here at Tigers Stadium, work singles, K-line scoring from third base,
- 2:01:57and the Tigers win the pennant for 1968.
- 2:02:04And they've posted the Boston score now, Boston 2 and Baltimore nothing.
- 2:02:12So a gigantic mob has gathered in front of the Tiger dugout.
- 2:02:16I don't know whether those players will ever get to the dugout.
- 2:02:21the crowd's still yelling.
- 2:02:24the Tigers coming in the ninth inning, leading 1 to nothing.
- 2:02:28Then the Yankees tied it in their half of the night.
- 2:02:31And with 2 out, a Wapsa K-line, a single by Freehand, a Wapsa Gates Brown,
- 2:02:36and a bases loaded single by Don Wirt driving home out K-line
- 2:02:41with a winning run in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:02:44So the Tigers in the ninth get one run, two hits, they win no Yankee errors,
- 2:02:49three runners are left, and the final score here at Tigers Stadium tonight
- 2:02:55was the Tigers with two runs, eight hits, no errors, Yankees won it.
- 2:02:59Thank you!
- 2:03:00Five hits and no errors.
- 2:03:02Farmer is the winning pitcher, and Hamilton, who puts the winning run on the bases,
- 2:03:09is the losing pitcher.
- 2:03:11So the man who started out in the doghouse, Joe Farmer,
- 2:03:14fits friendly, knocked in one run, and ended up as the winning pitcher.
- 2:03:20I don't know what that's here for.
- 2:03:24It's just a last thing.
- 2:03:29Now Ray Lane is in the Tiger Clubhouse, and I imagine quite a few things are popping down there.
- 2:03:35Ray, right behind you, we're in the Tiger Clubhouse,
- 2:03:38and here's your winner, the pinnate winner.
- 2:03:41It's a big night right now.
- 2:03:43And the man who started out as a bit of a surprise pitcher tonight,
- 2:03:47a fellow that's been in the doghouse, a guy that hasn't worked since the second of this month,
- 2:03:51Joe Farmer, congratulations.
- 2:03:53Thanks, Ray.
- 2:03:54Thank you very much.
- 2:03:56Great to be a part of it, I'll tell you.
- 2:03:58Joe, you had to feel a little down the last double of a month.
- 2:04:01Yeah, I did.
- 2:04:02I think I won this game for the people who had faith in me,
- 2:04:05and I guess my wife was one for her.
- 2:04:07I'll tell you, it was a great thrill.
- 2:04:10It was supposed to be Wilson.
- 2:04:12He came up with a little bit of a door on.
- 2:04:14You got the call.
- 2:04:15What went through your mind?
- 2:04:16Well, it was funny.
- 2:04:17I usually go right to the bullpen, and I just went on the bench to sit before I went to the ballgame.
- 2:04:21I went out to the bullpen, and they said,
- 2:04:23Earl couldn't pitch.
- 2:04:24There's some kid after my autograph.
- 2:04:26He said, Joe, can I have your autograph?
- 2:04:28And the man said, Farmer, can you pitch?
- 2:04:30I said, sure I can pitch.
- 2:04:31So I said, lucky start, I guess.
- 2:04:33I don't know if there are any kind of pitch tonight that you've seen with most of my fastball.
- 2:04:37I try to think of the guys play beautiful defense,
- 2:04:40go through some key plays out.
- 2:04:42It was just tremendous.
- 2:04:43I'm really glad I was part of that ballclub.
- 2:04:45Joe Farmer, congratulations, and we'll see you around on the St. Louis Garden.
- 2:04:49Thank you.
- 2:04:50Nice job.
- 2:04:51Pat Dobson, come on up here, Pat.
- 2:04:53You haven't worked in a while.
- 2:04:54Oh, yeah, yeah, baby.
- 2:04:55Pat Dobson, it hasn't worked in quite a while.
- 2:04:57Pat, you started to warm up tonight.
- 2:04:59I didn't need you.
- 2:05:00No, I'm glad I didn't either.
- 2:05:01I'd like to see Joe win that ballgame.
- 2:05:03That was a great show for him, I imagine.
- 2:05:05Listen, what about as far as Farmer?
- 2:05:07He had to really be a surprise tonight.
- 2:05:09Yeah, I think this will do more to boost Joe's morale and spirits and everything.
- 2:05:14I think it's just the greatest thing that could have happened to the guy.
- 2:05:16And I'm really happy for him and for everybody else.
- 2:05:18All right, Pat, get back to the jam.
- 2:05:20Okay, thank you.
- 2:05:22Hey, Bill, hey, freehand.
- 2:05:25Tiger Clubhouse going a little bit on the wild side right now.
- 2:05:29You can't blame them.
- 2:05:30Hey, Mickey, come on over here.
- 2:05:32Mickey Stanley, congratulations, Mickey, baby.
- 2:05:35Nice game, buddy.
- 2:05:36Thank you very much.
- 2:05:37What a thrill.
- 2:05:38Great thrill.
- 2:05:39Listen, let me tell you, I just want to find out right now,
- 2:05:41the ball club came in behind like they have all year long.
- 2:05:44Right, we expect to win the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:05:47We just set the stage again.
- 2:05:48We thought Gator Brown was going to do it, but I think they were afraid of him.
- 2:05:51You know, John was a fellow that's had a pretty rough season at the plate,
- 2:05:54came through for it.
- 2:05:55Right, and Joe Farmer did a whale of a job.
- 2:05:57It's good to see two guys end up having a good year like that.
- 2:05:59Mickey, you've had a great year.
- 2:06:00Continue success.
- 2:06:01We'll see you in a few.
- 2:06:02Thank you, Ray.
- 2:06:03Thank you.
- 2:06:04Hey, right now, manager Mayo Smith taking six bottles of champagne.
- 2:06:08Hey, Jimmy McClain.
- 2:06:09Hey, Jimmy.
- 2:06:10Hey, Jim.
- 2:06:11Jim Northrup right now.
- 2:06:16Jim, how about your feelings at this time?
- 2:06:18Oh, I'm happy, Ray.
- 2:06:19We look forward to this ever since I got in baseball,
- 2:06:21a year and a half.
- 2:06:22We feel great.
- 2:06:23Everybody does.
- 2:06:24I tell you, this is going on a champagne, going pretty good.
- 2:06:27Well, we won it just like we won them all year.
- 2:06:29It was nice seeing you again.
- 2:06:31I never had to know.
- 2:06:32Was there a little bit of doubt at all after the bottle?
- 2:06:34A couple nights?
- 2:06:35No, as long as we're tied, we knew we had a shot at it.
- 2:06:38We're just trying to win the ball game.
- 2:06:40I'm not worried about it too much.
- 2:06:41That's going, buddy.
- 2:06:42We'll see you later on.
- 2:06:44Right, I got manager Mayo Smith over here right now,
- 2:06:47a man that's been dunked by about five bottles of champagne.
- 2:06:50He is sopping wet.
- 2:06:56He's been up here and, of course, came back and did a great job.
- 2:07:00There's a lot of tough ones with you.
- 2:07:02Is this the toughest?
- 2:07:03Well, I wouldn't say this was the toughest, no,
- 2:07:06but it ended up the way we wanted it to.
- 2:07:09We won it even though we knew that Baltimore had lost.
- 2:07:13So it's a very happy day.
- 2:07:15And, of course, these guys just played great all year.
- 2:07:20I'm happy first for them.
- 2:07:23And, of course, John Fester, the Tiger organization,
- 2:07:27last but not least the fans.
- 2:07:29They waited a long time for this.
- 2:07:30Did you age a little bit in that night, buddy?
- 2:07:32No, I didn't age.
- 2:07:33I've aged all through the season, but it's been so great.
- 2:07:39These boys have just played terrific.
- 2:07:41Simply, you had a couple of guys that had rough years,
- 2:07:43Bama and Godword at the plate,
- 2:07:45and they both came to you for the night.
- 2:07:47Well, this has been the way our club has been.
- 2:07:52I know it's an old cliché, but believe me,
- 2:07:55this is a team effort.
- 2:07:57Each and every one of these 25 have contributed.
- 2:08:01What good words, campaign, baby.
- 2:08:04I love it.
- 2:08:06Mario Smith and somebody just took their shaving cream
- 2:08:11and put it on his head.
- 2:08:12Hey, K-line, Al.
- 2:08:14Hey, Al.
- 2:08:15Al, you got a sucker, baby.
- 2:08:16Al K-line.
- 2:08:17Al, this is going to be probably your happiest moment, isn't it?
- 2:08:19Yeah, it really is, buddy.
- 2:08:20I've been waiting a long time, so has a lot of people around here,
- 2:08:22but it really was exciting.
- 2:08:24the team's played hard all year long,
- 2:08:25and it's been a typical finish of the Tigers.
- 2:08:28It was just great.
- 2:08:30Joe Sparman fits in a great game.
- 2:08:32With the abuse he's got to go through all year,
- 2:08:34and we were really wanting him to win the game one to nothing
- 2:08:36because he deserves it.
- 2:08:38He's tried hard all year long, and it's really a happy moment.
- 2:08:41It's typical of the way the Tigers have played all year.
- 2:08:43Al, a frustrating year for you,
- 2:08:45but you managed to be on base to score the winning run.
- 2:08:48Well, it was a big thrill for me.
- 2:08:50I felt that I would do something to win the ball game if I got in there,
- 2:08:53and I didn't know how I was going to do it,
- 2:08:55but I had a feeling it was going to be my night.
- 2:08:57I didn't do much.
- 2:08:58I got on base and I scored a winning run, but it was a big thrill for me.
- 2:09:01You've had a lot of wonderful things happen to you over the years.
- 2:09:04You've always wanted the American league, but after that,
- 2:09:06I think you'll probably have one more team to go, don't you?
- 2:09:09Well, I think we're going to be pretty good in this series.
- 2:09:12the Cardinals are a mighty tough ball club,
- 2:09:14and we have to be mighty good to beat them,
- 2:09:16but nothing surprised me the way our team has played,
- 2:09:18but we're going to have to be mighty lucky to beat the Cardinals.
- 2:09:21Al Kaelin, thank you so much. Congratulations.
- 2:09:23Thank you.
- 2:09:24Well, a lot of activity right now as they are giving a champagne all over here.
- 2:09:30Trying to duck out of the way to see if we can find Mr. Setzer.
- 2:09:33He has been dunked pretty well by some champagne.
- 2:09:35I think possibly he has left.
- 2:09:37Wally Moses.
- 2:09:40Wally.
- 2:09:42Wally, can you come over for just a second?
- 2:09:44Wally Moses, first base coach, and Wally,
- 2:09:46you've certainly done a wonderful job with these boys for the past year.
- 2:09:49Thanks, Ray. Thanks.
- 2:09:51All these kids have been great, and somebody came through for us every day.
- 2:09:56Wally, a guy that had a lot of trouble at the plate this year,
- 2:09:58John Wirtz, comes up to be the batting hero at least to drive in that winning run.
- 2:10:02That's great, and Palmer, who's also had a tough year,
- 2:10:05he's picked a way a little ball game.
- 2:10:07All right, now how do you stack this up against the famous Cardinals?
- 2:10:11I think we can beat them.
- 2:10:12I hope you're right.
- 2:10:13I think we've got a good camp.
- 2:10:15All right, Wally, congratulations again. Thank you, Parker.
- 2:10:17Thank you, Ray.
- 2:10:19Still roaming around out here in the old Happy Tiger Clubhouse now,
- 2:10:23the first American lieutenant for the Detroit Tigers in 23 years.
- 2:10:29Go Tigers! Go Tigers! Go Tigers!
- 2:10:43the Alec Tigers give it off with a little bit of a champ right now.
- 2:10:46Let's see if we can get over here to reach the Tiger president, Mr. John Fetzer.
- 2:10:52Right now we get up here, and one Alec with a bottle of champagne.
- 2:10:57Mr. Fetzer, congratulations.
- 2:11:04Well, I'm not very good at giving play-by-play description to Ray,
- 2:11:10but that was the finest toss of water I've ever seen tossed on Jim Campbell's ball head.
- 2:11:16And this is the greatest testimony I know to the greatest ball club in the world today.
- 2:11:20Mr. Fetzer, I want to say one thing.
- 2:11:22You have tried for the past two years to build yourself a penitent tender.
- 2:11:26You got it tonight.
- 2:11:28This is the climax of a long, long, cold winter night.
- 2:11:32But I tell you right now, it's warm indeed.
- 2:11:35Mr. Fetzer, again, congratulations to you for all your fine work.
- 2:11:39Thank you very much, Ray.
- 2:11:40See if we can't sneak over right now.
- 2:11:42And there goes the champagne down the back right now.
- 2:11:45If we can't sneak over and try to reach Jim Campbell,
- 2:11:48who is over in the corner of the Tiger dressing room now shaking hands with some of his players.
- 2:11:53And see if we can get our mic cable over there.
- 2:11:58Mickey, can you get Mr. Campbell for us over there?
- 2:12:00Mickey, look, it's trying to get Jim, as you heard Mr. Fetzer say.
- 2:12:05Trying to take care of that friendly hair,
- 2:12:09that amount of hair he has on his head when he got a bucket of water.
- 2:12:13Jim, congratulations.
- 2:12:14Well, we're real, real happy.
- 2:12:16I tell you, real happy.
- 2:12:17You don't have to worry about it.
- 2:12:19You think you've been so close for a few days but one it comes is,
- 2:12:23you think, well, you won't get exciting,
- 2:12:26but by golly it's just wonderful.
- 2:12:27but by golly it's just wonderful.
- 2:12:29Jim, you've had a hero in about every ball game, over here.
- 2:12:42Jim, you've had a hero in about every ball game, over here.
- 2:12:46There's really no one here in this club.
- 2:12:48three bunch of kids and I think they're just great.
- 2:12:52the best is certainly pay off for all the hours and days and months of hard work trying to build up the financial business.
- 2:12:57Yeah, and years.
- 2:12:58Okay, you look great with that bill file again.
- 2:13:01Jim Campbell, General Manager and Vice President of the Detroit Tigers.
- 2:13:06I'm going to flip right back in here if we can and get out of the bath right now.
- 2:13:11We're in the clubhouse of the victorious Detroit Tigers as they win the 1968 American League credits.
- 2:13:19Right now, trying to get out of that mic court, right down there.
- 2:13:27There we go.
- 2:13:28We make it right now.
- 2:13:30So many, as we mentioned, so many heroes on this Tiger team this year.
- 2:13:36And the champagne's still going in pretty good shape.
- 2:13:40Hey, Tommy.
- 2:13:41Hey, Tommy.
- 2:13:42Tommy.
- 2:13:43Tommy.
- 2:13:44Tommy Macchuk.
- 2:13:45Tommy Macchuk.
- 2:13:46Congratulations, buddy.
- 2:13:47Thank you, Ray.
- 2:13:48Thank you.
- 2:13:49It's wonderful.
- 2:13:50I mean, it's basically for me what a way to break in for a rookie.
- 2:13:56I mean, that's all I can say.
- 2:13:57I say, first year man, you've covered what?
- 2:14:00Second, short, third, a little bit of first?
- 2:14:03Oh, well, first, second, short.
- 2:14:05Well, I think I can live with it and Matthew's handled third because that's a little too close for me.
- 2:14:12Tommy, you've had an awful lot of work now at shortstop in the past few weeks with the Tigers.
- 2:14:17And it looks like everything is sort of falling in place with you.
- 2:14:21What about the hitting right now?
- 2:14:22You seem to be coming around a little bit.
- 2:14:23Yes, I've come around quite a bit, Ray.
- 2:14:26I'm trying to go through the middle, except tonight, again, I just, a couple pitches, I tried to fully hung me a couple curveballs,
- 2:14:33and I tried to pull on the best I could do and hit them back over his head.
- 2:14:36And they either got me a first or they got Norman third on one play.
- 2:14:39Tommy, best of luck the rest of the way in and best of luck in the series.
- 2:14:43Thank you, Ray. It's great.
- 2:14:44Tommy Maciek.
- 2:14:46Well, things are popping around here.
- 2:14:48Let's see if we can't get Bill free.
- 2:14:49And then over here, hey Bill, come on over.
- 2:14:53Congratulations, buddy.
- 2:14:54A great season.
- 2:14:55Thanks a lot, Ray.
- 2:14:56I'll tell you, it's the greatest throw of my life.
- 2:14:57I never cried before, I don't think.
- 2:14:59I was crying when I left that field. It's sort of hard to describe.
- 2:15:03You know, you think you never cry as a man, but I did.
- 2:15:06Bill, you had a wonderful season, but I'd like to change the subject to your roommate, a fellow by the name of Joe Sparba.
- 2:15:11He was unbelievable. I don't know how he did it on such a short notice like that, just walking out there.
- 2:15:15I was, you know, I was feeling sorry for him in a way.
- 2:15:19Things are going for him this year, but I think this makes a heck of a season out of a mediocre season for him.
- 2:15:25Was there any point in the ninth inning that you thought, well, maybe we might be in trouble?
- 2:15:31Well, you always think about that.
- 2:15:34Basically, we didn't do anything and we didn't want to give up a home run,
- 2:15:38because that's going to take you out of the ballgame.
- 2:15:41We tried to make the guy hit a fastball and keep the ball down, and he did.
- 2:15:44He hit it right back to the middle, but missed one of those things.
- 2:15:48He could have hit it right at somebody.
- 2:15:49Bill, you had a chance to gun down a couple of runners in the Yankees tonight,
- 2:15:53and you had some fired shots down there, or else they decided not to go on you.
- 2:15:57You're going to have a little test in the series against a few of those cardinals, aren't you?
- 2:16:01Oh, we'll have some fun. Basically, you've got to try to keep those guys off the base,
- 2:16:04because that's the whole base of their attack.
- 2:16:06But it's a picture gives you a good shot, and it helps to catch it a lot.
- 2:16:11Joe was pretty careful with the guys on base tonight, and he gave me a pretty good shot to throw some of the guys out.
- 2:16:16Well, you look awfully good at champagne, buddy. Congratulations.
- 2:16:19Thanks a lot, Ray. It was great.
- 2:16:21Yeah, and I certainly had a great season for the Detroit Joggers,
- 2:16:24and I helped them on their way to the 1968 American League Senate.
- 2:16:28Hey, Mickey.
- 2:16:29Mickey Lowley. Say we can't get the old left hander over here, Mickey.
- 2:16:32Hey, buddy, you must be pretty good feeling.
- 2:16:35Oh, I tell you, Ray, it's great. I don't know what to say.
- 2:16:37I mean, we had a feeling, you know, we were going to win us the spring training,
- 2:16:40and here we are, and we're the happiest people in the world right now.
- 2:16:43You know, you're talking about that feeling. I think it was very prevalent in spring training.
- 2:16:46It was sort of a silent thought that all you guys had seemed like dedication.
- 2:16:50You knew you could do it.
- 2:16:51Well, everybody said in spring training, I mean, how do we feel after last year
- 2:16:54when we come so close and miss?
- 2:16:56And we said, well, we knew what it was like there.
- 2:16:58We were all more experienced, and I think today we have proved
- 2:17:01that we did gain more experience last year,
- 2:17:03and I think there's a great future for the Detroit Tigers in the next few years in Detroit.
- 2:17:07Mickey, you've had that in and out season, at least the first three months of the season,
- 2:17:11you seem to be on the right track again.
- 2:17:13Well, you know Mickey Lowley, he always seems to come along when he has to,
- 2:17:16so I'm real glad I could do it.
- 2:17:18Mickey, you've done a wonderful job, and good luck the remaining of the season,
- 2:17:22and good luck in the series.
- 2:17:24Thank you very much, Ray. Thank you.
- 2:17:26Mickey Lowley certainly did a wonderful job, and right now,
- 2:17:30the man who seems to be a very happy man, the true God of the Detroit Tigers, Ed Catalina.
- 2:17:37And, Ed, congratulations to you.
- 2:17:39You've seen some of these boys from boys go into manhood tonight.
- 2:17:43Ray, this ball club started with the signing of Alec K. Lerner in 53.
- 2:17:47Plus the advent of Tiger Town, along come Mr. Fessler, and give us one word,
- 2:17:54build from within, and this is the result of his philosophy of the money's expended.
- 2:18:00Fellas like Rick Farrow, Jim Campbell, Don Lund, Ralph Snyder,
- 2:18:06are wonderful managers and are good scouting staff.
- 2:18:09I'll say one thing, Ed, and you're not going to stop here.
- 2:18:12It looks like these boys have to come through in a series.
- 2:18:15They're going to go all the way, all, all the way.
- 2:18:18Ed Catalina, thanks very much.
- 2:18:23Right now, let's see if we can't get ahold of Fred Lacher over here, Fred.
- 2:18:27How you doing, Ray?
- 2:18:28How you doing?
- 2:18:29Oh, Christ, this is the best thing that ever happened in the world.
- 2:18:32What a good thing it happened.
- 2:18:34It's something everybody dreams of, I guess, as a youngster,
- 2:18:37and never realized it could possibly happen to you someday.
- 2:18:39It's fantastic.
- 2:18:41It's been quite, at this point, the last couple of weeks, the bullpen has not seen any action.
- 2:18:46Looks like you'll get some work, though, maybe a little bit in the series, huh?
- 2:18:50Well, that'd be nice, but if we keep going like this, we know we're winning anyway.
- 2:18:54As long as the bullpen's not working, we know we're in good shape.
- 2:18:56Fred, congratulations to you, buddy. Have a good time.
- 2:18:58Thank you, Ray.
- 2:19:02A lot happening out here in the Tiger Grassing Room.
- 2:19:06Let's see if we can't get the old rancher, Stormin' Norman Cash, if we can get over that far.
- 2:19:10How you doing?
- 2:19:12Over there.
- 2:19:14Norman, congratulations, buddy.
- 2:19:16How you doing?
- 2:19:16Good to see you.
- 2:19:17You've been a great year, Norman.
- 2:19:19Well, it damn true has. I mean, we played hard. We played hard.
- 2:19:23When you were going to win, believe me, we were.
- 2:19:25You know, this ball putt has been a loose putt, too, hasn't it?
- 2:19:28Well, we've kept it loose. I mean, there was no reason for us to ever get tight.
- 2:19:33the only time it looked like it might get a lot of time was over in New York,
- 2:19:37so we knew we were going to win, and myself and K-line, you know, the older players,
- 2:19:42we knew we'd been there before, and so we kept it loose.
- 2:19:46Really, we enjoyed it.
- 2:19:47Norman, I want to say one thing. You got off to another slow start this year.
- 2:19:50You're gunning that ball pretty well right now.
- 2:19:52Just a minute, Ray. Just a minute, Ray. We'll see you later.
- 2:19:55Hey, hi, you sports fans. This is Jim Nogip, interviewing the game boys.
- 2:19:58Hey, you guys. See you later, Ray.
- 2:20:02Hey, Ray, how are you?
- 2:20:07Hey, let me interview. Come here.
- 2:20:10Come here. Come here. We're on the news. Come here.
- 2:20:13Come on, baby.
- 2:20:14Here we have Don Worthy, who drove in the clutch with him around the night to beat him 2 to 1.
- 2:20:18How do you feel right now?
- 2:20:19Jim, I feel real good. I'm just glad to come through that great big hit.
- 2:20:22Oh, boy, Don, I knew you could do it all along.
- 2:20:24How about a waste final pitch? That was great, wasn't it?
- 2:20:27That was real good, Jim. I'd say it was good.
- 2:20:28Hey, Hawk, Hawk, come out here. Hawk, come out here.
- 2:20:32Hawk, come here, Hawk. Hawk.
- 2:20:38We're on the radio or whatever we're on. How do you feel about this season, Hawk?
- 2:20:42Hey, great box office, buddy.
- 2:20:44Hey, Hawk.
- 2:20:47Hey, here, folks.
- 2:20:48There's a fellow.
- 2:20:49Pull him back.
- 2:20:50There's a fellow you might not know. This is K.O. Tobin, the world's greatest fighter and greatest lover at the same time.
- 2:20:56K.O., what do you think, babe?
- 2:20:58Oh, why not?
- 2:21:01Okay. Mr. Fetzer, could I have you on the radio? I'll be on the field this time.
- 2:21:06Is this a live mic or a demo?
- 2:21:08This is a live mic.
- 2:21:09This is a live mic.
- 2:21:10Yes, sir.
- 2:21:11Well, I want to tell you, if I could be interviewed by our right fielder, for me, it's okay.
- 2:21:18Okay, Mr. Fetzer.
- 2:21:20Happy New Year. I'm going to take it back over to Ray Lane.
- 2:21:22That a boy. Whoa. You a rat.
- 2:21:25I tell you, I found out what the whirlpool feels like right now, Mr. Fetzer.
- 2:21:29Thank you, Jim, for doing a show.
- 2:21:31Well, I want to tell you right now, the whirlpool campaign is all wet, but it's all good tonight.
- 2:21:37I'm glad I wore a wash and dry shirt tonight.
- 2:21:39So did I.
- 2:21:40Thank you again, Mr. Fetzer.
- 2:21:41You bet.
- 2:21:42Oh, that was something. I got dunked by Hitler and Thompson in that whirlpool.
- 2:21:46And if it doesn't freeze tonight, I won't go home with stiff clothes on, that's for sure.
- 2:21:52God work. Congratulations.
- 2:21:54Thank you, Ray. Thank you very much. I feel real great.
- 2:21:56It's been a little bit of a frustrating year, but that for you, it came to an economy.
- 2:22:03Thank you, Ray. I was real happy. the main thing I didn't want to go very well is to strike out.
- 2:22:07I just want to hit the ball somewhere.
- 2:22:09And he did. He did.
- 2:22:11Ray Euler, he certainly did.
- 2:22:13You're an apple. I tell you, everybody on the bench knew he was going to do it.
- 2:22:17That's just the way we've been playing all year. When Johnny went up forever, I knew he was going to do it.
- 2:22:21This has been a sort of a, not a strange season, that's not the right word, but we've had a hero,
- 2:22:27it seems like in every ball game, a different guy.
- 2:22:30It's been a great year for the full roster, hasn't it?
- 2:22:32It sure has, Ray. We plan for the next few years to be just the same.
