- 0:00One of the perplexing quandaries of the gospel is what it means
- 0:03to take upon oneself the name of Christ.
- 0:07The We will all be saved in the end.
- 0:10Delusion is older than the earth itself, and its origin is from
- 0:15the one who proposed to do that very thing at the expense of the
- 0:21agency of man. God offers to give all He has to
- 0:26any and all of His children if they keep His commandments.
- 0:30God's plan for His children. It's not haphazard
- 0:34righteousness. There can be no fulfillment
- 0:37without commitment first. It is this commitment that
- 0:40scares people off. Every sane person wants
- 0:44fulfillment, redemption, joy, knowledge, peace, strength,
- 0:47love, and power. But not everyone is willing to
- 0:51make the commitment to pay the price necessary to receive them.
- 0:56The Lord said, Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall
- 1:02enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
- 1:20Here's the question. Are faith and repentance enough
- 1:23to be forgiven and receive the full measure of blessings from
- 1:28the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ?
- 1:32And why are ordinances and covenants necessary?
- 1:36And what does it mean to take upon oneself the name of Christ?
- 1:42Hello, I'm Larry Corbridge and this is episode 23 of Stand
- 1:47Forever. So again, our faith and
- 1:56repentance enough to be forgiven and receive the full measure of
- 2:01blessings of the atonement from the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:05The answer's no beginning. Beginning with Adam, baptism has
- 2:12been necessary to be forgiven, forgiven of sin, and to receive
- 2:17the Holy Ghost and enter the Kingdom of God.
- 2:19It is the gate to the path that leads to eternal life.
- 2:25When Jesus went to John for baptism, John naturally resisted
- 2:30saying, I have need of thee to be baptized, and comest thou to
- 2:36me. Jesus replied, Suffer it to be
- 2:40so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.
- 2:46And Jesus when he was baptized, the scripture records went up
- 2:50straight way out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened
- 2:53unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
- 2:57and lighting upon him. And lo, a voice from heaven
- 3:02saying, This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased, Nephi
- 3:10also reasoned. And now if the Lamb of God, he
- 3:13being holy, should have need to be baptized by water to fulfill
- 3:17all righteousness, oh, then how much more need have we, being
- 3:21unholy, to be baptized even by water?
- 3:26To Nicodemus the Lord said, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
- 3:32Except the man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot
- 3:39enter the Kingdom of God. Baptism is for the remission of
- 3:45sins, to qualify one to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and
- 3:50enter God's Kingdom. The very last charge Christ left
- 3:57with his disciples was to teach all nations, baptizing them in
- 4:03the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
- 4:08He also said, Go ye unto all the world and preach the gospel to
- 4:13every creature, that he that believeth and and is baptized
- 4:18shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned.
- 4:25That is a stark reality that falls hard on the ears in a
- 4:30culture that increasingly decries exclusion and celebrates
- 4:35open borders even unto heaven under the Boehner of tolerance
- 4:40and the false belief that a loving God will give everything
- 4:43to everyone just because he loves them.
- 4:46Ignoring Christ's teachings, including the parable of the
- 4:49virgins, the We will all be saved in the end.
- 4:54Delusion is older than the earth itself, and its origin is from
- 4:59the one who proposed to do that very thing at the expense of the
- 5:04agency of man. Faith and repentance qualify 1
- 5:10to worthily receive ordinances beginning with baptism as
- 5:16evidence of covenants leading to power to engage in the work of
- 5:21God. The Lord said, For for the gate
- 5:25by which you should enter is repentance and baptism by water,
- 5:30and then and then cometh the remission of your sins by fire
- 5:35and by the Holy Ghost, and then are ye in this straight and
- 5:40narrow path which leads to eternal life.
- 5:45Baptism is the introductory ordinance.
- 5:48It is the gate to the path that leads to eternal life and every
- 5:52other good thing between here and there.
- 5:56You get on the path through the gate.
- 6:00Jacob said, Oh, then come unto the Lord, the Holy One, remember
- 6:06that his paths are righteous. Behold the way, Behold the way.
- 6:11For man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him.
- 6:17And the keeper of the gate is the holy One of Israel, he said,
- 6:21And he employeth no servant there, and there is none, none
- 6:25other way save it be by the gate, for he cannot be deceived,
- 6:31for the Lord God is his name. Society would be chaotic without
- 6:45the law of contracts. Contracts lay out the plan and
- 6:49understanding between two or more people, usually about the
- 6:53scope of some work and reciprocal compensation, so no
- 6:58one can rightfully claim any misunderstanding.
- 7:02The parties to a contractor, not strangers, but know each other
- 7:06at least sufficiently to fulfill the agreement according to its
- 7:11terms. A contract places the parties in
- 7:15a relationship with each other and governs their respective
- 7:19rights and interests. If a homeowner, for example,
- 7:24negotiates with a house painter to paint his home for $14,000,
- 7:30and the terms of their agreement are reduced to writing signed by
- 7:34both parties, the house painter has a lawful claim for payment
- 7:38if he performs according to the terms of the agreement.
- 7:42That all seems reasonable. If, however, a house painter
- 7:46takes it upon himself to paint a house on his own accord without
- 7:51any agreement, he cannot expect payment for his unsolicited
- 7:55services. Word.
- 7:58Otherwise, Amazon. Amazon could deliver a a what AD
- 8:039 Caterpillar tractor to your doorstep and charge you $100,000
- 8:08even though you didn't order it. Without the law of contracts,
- 8:12life would be chaos, chaotic. Similarly, our life now as well
- 8:20as before after mortality, would be chaotic without the Law of
- 8:23Covenants. Covenants, in a like manner,
- 8:28layout the plan and full understanding between God and
- 8:31His children about the scope of work on earth and reciprocal
- 8:35compensation so that no one can rightfully claim any
- 8:39misunderstanding. Covenants are the spiritual
- 8:43creation for the Lord, said I, the Lord.
- 8:46God created all things of which I have spoken spiritually before
- 8:52they were naturally upon the face of the earth.
- 8:56The parties to a covenant are not strangers, but they know
- 9:01each other at least sufficiently to fulfill the agreement.
- 9:04According to its terms, the covenant places the parties in a
- 9:09relationship with each other and governs their respective rights
- 9:14and interests. God offers to give all He has,
- 9:21especially His Son, His Spirit, and His life, to any and all of
- 9:27His children. If they keep His commandments,
- 9:31His children may accept His offer and enter a covenant with
- 9:35God by worthily receiving ordinances.
- 9:37And if they perform according to the terms of the agreement, they
- 9:41may confidently expect to receive the incomparable
- 9:46benefits of the covenant. That also all seems reasonable.
- 9:53If, however, a person lives a good life on his own accord, as
- 9:57he deems best, without any agreement or commitment, he
- 10:04cannot expect God to compensate him in the same way.
- 10:09Were it otherwise, his children could lay claim to His greatest
- 10:12blessings on their terms, not his, turning again everything on
- 10:19its head, making man the master and God the servant.
- 10:24Contracts and covenants both require mutuality, reciprocal
- 10:31commitments, and a meeting of the minds to the terms of the
- 10:34agreement. If a wealthy person were to
- 10:38broadcast a gratuitous offer to give away $1,000,000, and if you
- 10:43were to show up on his doorstep to claim the prize, you would
- 10:47have no legal claim to it because there was no mutuality,
- 10:51no meeting of the of the minds, no agreement.
- 10:56God's plan for his children is not it's not haphazard
- 11:02righteousness. There can be no fulfillment
- 11:06without commitment. First, you must commit.
- 11:12It is this commitment that scares people off Everyone.
- 11:15Everyone wants the benefits offered.
- 11:19Every sane person wants fulfillment, redemption, joy,
- 11:22knowledge, peace, strength, love, and power.
- 11:25But not everyone is willing to make the commitment to pay the
- 11:29price necessary to receive them. The Lord said, not everyone that
- 11:37saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of
- 11:42heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father, which is in
- 11:47heaven, many will say to me, He said, in that day, Lord, Lord,
- 11:51have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name cast out
- 11:55devils, and in thy name done many wonderful works?
- 11:58And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you depart
- 12:05from me, ye that work iniquity. You can't just be good and show
- 12:14up a stranger hoping to be paid. Without the law of Covenants,
- 12:21chaos would prevail. A woman seeking to have her
- 12:27temple blessings restored said this.
- 12:31Until recently, I had not fully grasped the concept of
- 12:36ordinances and the special significance of ordinances in
- 12:40relationship to exaltation. The ordinances of salvation and
- 12:46exaltation administered in the Lord's restored church, she
- 12:51said, are far more than rituals or symbolic performances.
- 12:55Rather, they constitute authorized channels through
- 12:59which the blessings and powers of heaven can flow into our
- 13:04individual lives. Great insight.
- 13:09The power of godliness, the gift of God's Spirit is conferred by
- 13:14the ordinances of the priesthood, the Lord said, And
- 13:19this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and
- 13:22holdeth the key of knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom,
- 13:27even the key of the knowledge of God.
- 13:29Therefore, listen to this. Therefore, in the ordinances
- 13:33there of the power of godliness is manifest, and then He repeats
- 13:40it, and without the ordinances thereof and the authority of the
- 13:44priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto
- 13:50the children of men in the flesh.
- 13:55Baptism leads to the power of godliness, the power of the Holy
- 14:00Ghost. The Lord said, now this is the
- 14:02commandment, Repent all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me
- 14:07and be baptized in my name. That Now let me pause there.
- 14:12The word that is a very important word, it signals
- 14:15destination and coming to me and be baptized in my name, that ye
- 14:24may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost,
- 14:28that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.
- 14:34So again, the word that is important in Scripture as it
- 14:38signals purpose or or destination, so faith,
- 14:45repentance and baptism, that to the end, that of receiving the
- 14:52gift of the Holy Ghost and standing spotless before God.
- 14:57Therefore, in the ordinances of the priesthood the power of
- 15:01godliness is manifest. So let's think about the
- 15:07sacrament. The sacrament leads to the power
- 15:11of godliness, the power of the Holy Ghost, as sacred as it is.
- 15:17This is the sacrament prayer. Oh God the Eternal Father, we
- 15:23ask thee, in the name of Thy Son Jesus Christ, to bless and
- 15:26sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it,
- 15:31that they may eat in remembrance of the body of Thy Son.
- 15:35And witness unto thee, O God the Eternal Father, that they are
- 15:39willing to take upon them the name of Thy Son, and always
- 15:43remember Him, and keep His commandments which He has given
- 15:47them, that they may always have His Spirit to be with them.
- 15:57Again, the word that that we may always have His Spirit to be
- 16:04with us. Therefore, in the ordinances of
- 16:08the priesthood, the power of godliness is manifest.
- 16:14Think about temple ordinances as as part of the dedicatory prayer
- 16:19of the Kirtland Temple and in reference to the ordinances and
- 16:22work of the temple that the Prophet Joseph Smith prayed, and
- 16:29that they may grow up in thee and receive a fullness of the
- 16:34Holy Ghost. In connection with temple
- 16:37ordinances, he said that in order to engage in His work, His
- 16:42servants must be endowed with power from on high through the
- 16:48ordinances of the temple. So again, therefore, in the
- 16:55ordinances of the priesthood, the power of godliness is
- 17:00manifest. This truth reveals, listen to
- 17:05this, this truth reveals that everyone is on equal footing.
- 17:15The power of godliness is not the sole domain of the
- 17:18priesthood. Rather, it is equally available
- 17:23to everyone through the ordinances of the priesthood.
- 17:29It is available to everyone equally through the ordinances
- 17:33of the priesthood. Everyone is on equal footing.
- 17:38And not to diminish the blessing of a righteous father in the
- 17:42home, but a single mother, for example, may have the power of
- 17:47godliness in her life and in her home through the ordinances of
- 17:53the priesthood, even if there is no priesthood holder in the
- 17:57home. As with all covenants, the
- 18:01ordinance of baptism is necessary, but the ordinance
- 18:05alone is not enough to form a binding agreement.
- 18:11You can't take a man out of the gut, out of the gutter, and
- 18:14baptize him in a drunken stupor and expect a covenant to be
- 18:18formed. As with contracts, there must be
- 18:22a meeting of the minds for a covenant to be formed, an
- 18:26understanding and conscious acceptance of the terms of the
- 18:30offer. The Lord said this, and again,
- 18:34by way of commandment to the Church concerning the manner of
- 18:37baptism. All those who humble themselves
- 18:41before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with
- 18:44broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the
- 18:49Church, that they have truly repented of all their sins, and
- 18:53are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having
- 18:57a determination to serve Him to the end.
- 19:01And truly manifest by their works that they have received of
- 19:05the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall
- 19:10be received by baptism into His Church.
- 19:17So humility is a condition to baptism.
- 19:22One must want the blessings of baptism and have a broken heart
- 19:27and contrite spirit, and be willing to take upon himself or
- 19:32herself the name of Jesus Christ and have a determination to
- 19:37serve Him to the end by engaging in His work to build up His
- 19:43Kingdom. So that brings us to this
- 19:52important question. What does it mean to take upon
- 19:56oneself the name of Christ? Names.
- 20:03Names are important. They help to order what would
- 20:08otherwise be chaos. They help people to know who
- 20:11they are and where where they belong.
- 20:15God gave the first man the name of Adam, and Adam called his
- 20:19wife E. He also gave names to every
- 20:23living creature. Life eternal is to know God and
- 20:29Jesus Christ. To know someone begins with a
- 20:35name. It is primal and instinctive.
- 20:42It is the first thing we learn when introduced to someone.
- 20:47Hello, my name is Larry, what is your name?
- 20:53Conversation then progresses to where do you live and what do
- 20:57you do? We explain who we are and try to
- 21:00get a fix on who others are and where they belong.
- 21:03And all that begins with a name. When God spoke to Moses on top
- 21:12of a mountain, he began by calling Moses by name.
- 21:16Moses. Moses then introducing himself,
- 21:23he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the
- 21:29God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
- 21:32He then explained his intent to bring the children of Israel out
- 21:36of the bondage of the Egypt and for Moses to be his servant.
- 21:40To that end, Moses understandably asked, Who am I?
- 21:48Who am I to do such an impossible task?
- 21:51And God responds only indirectly, saying, Certainly I
- 21:57will be with thee. Moses then has the courage to
- 22:02ask God's name. He says, When I come unto the
- 22:07children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your
- 22:13Father's has sent me unto you. And they shall say to me, What
- 22:17is his name? What shall I say unto them?
- 22:22And God said unto Moses, I am that I am.
- 22:29And he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I
- 22:35am has sent me unto you. When?
- 22:41When Paul fell to the ground, surrounded in light, and heard a
- 22:44voice saying, Saul, Saul, why persecute us, thou me?
- 22:49Paul replied, Who art thou Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus,
- 22:58whom thou persecuted. When the Lord appeared to the
- 23:03Nephite people after his resurrection, he said, Behold, I
- 23:08am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come
- 23:12into the world. Interestingly, Heavenly Father
- 23:17usually introduces himself indirectly by deferring to his
- 23:21Son, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
- 23:28Hear him. He makes himself known by his
- 23:33Son. Names are important.
- 23:38One of the perplexing quandaries of the gospel is what it means
- 23:42to take upon oneself the name of Christ.
- 23:46It is somewhat paradoxical because the name of the
- 23:50priesthood was changed to avoid the two off repetition of His
- 23:53name. And yet God has instructed us to
- 23:58do all that we do in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 24:02Morone, I warned, saying, See that you are not baptized
- 24:07unworthily. See that you partake not of the
- 24:09sacrament of Christ unworthily, but see that you do all things
- 24:13in worthiness, and do it in the name of Jesus Christ the Son of
- 24:18the living God. And if you do this, and endure
- 24:21to the end, ye will in no wise be cast out.
- 24:27So again, what does it mean to do all things in the name of
- 24:31Christ? We of course pray to our Father
- 24:35in the name of Christ. All ordinances are performed in
- 24:40the name of Christ. Miracles and healings are done
- 24:45in the name of Christ. The early apostles and disciples
- 24:48preached in his name, Paul said of of Corinthians who were once
- 24:55unrighteous. They were washed, in other
- 24:58words, baptized, sanctified, justified in the name of the
- 25:02Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
- 25:07Paul also said, God the Father highly exalted Christ and gave
- 25:11him a name which is above every name.
- 25:16An Angel of the Lord instructed Adam, saying, Thou shalt do all
- 25:20that thou doest in the name of the Son.
- 25:24When we are baptized, we take upon us the name of Jesus
- 25:28Christ. As we partake of the sacrament
- 25:31bread, we covenant that we are willing to take upon us the name
- 25:36of the Son. The apostle John explained the
- 25:40purpose of his gospel saying, But these things are written
- 25:44that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
- 25:47God, and that believing you might have life through his
- 25:53name. Again, what does he mean?
- 26:00That we might have life through the name of Christ?
- 26:06He also recorded, and this is his commandment, that we should
- 26:11believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one
- 26:16another as he gave us commandment.
- 26:20On another occasion he said These things have I written unto
- 26:24you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that you may
- 26:28know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the
- 26:32name of the Son of God. One might think John would have
- 26:37said believe on Christ rather than his name.
- 26:44I know I keep asking this, what does it mean to believe on the
- 26:48name of Christ? Nephi recorded There was none
- 26:54other name given under heaven, save it be this Jesus Christ
- 26:59whereby man can be saved in our day, the Lord revealed, Behold,
- 27:04Jesus Christ is the name which is given of the Father, and
- 27:08there is none other name given whereby man can be saved.
- 27:13Speaking of Christ, Alma said. And behold, it is he that cometh
- 27:17to take away the sins of the world, Yeah, the sins of every
- 27:21man who steadfastly believeth on his name.
- 27:26Helaman said the gate of heaven is open unto all, even to those
- 27:32who believe on the name of Christ, who is the Son of God.
- 27:38Why not say heaven is open to all who believe on Christ rather
- 27:41than his name? Again, I know this is a lot.
- 27:46I just want you to get an idea how pervasive this truth is
- 27:50threaded throughout all of Scripture.
- 27:53Also in our day. The Lord further clarify the
- 27:56commandment to love God, saying, Wherefore I give unto you a
- 27:59commandment saying, Thus thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
- 28:04all thy heart, with all thy might, mind, and strength, and
- 28:07in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him.
- 28:13It is interesting that when Peter and John were arrested,
- 28:16the Sanhedrin Council admonished Peter and John for teaching in
- 28:22the name of Christ and commanded them not to speak at all nor
- 28:27teach in the name of Jesus, rather than simply ordering them
- 28:34not to speak of Jesus and his teachings.
- 28:37The concept of acting in the name of another must have been
- 28:42commonly understood by them. Probably no one.
- 28:47Now this may be the last example.
- 28:49I'm not sure. Probably no one has taught more
- 28:53compellingly about the name of Christ than King Benjamin.
- 28:59He promised His people He would give them a name that thereby
- 29:05they may be distinguished above all people.
- 29:08When they assembled the following day, He concluded his
- 29:13historic teaching, repeatedly emphasizing the name of Christ,
- 29:19saying this. And now, because of the covenant
- 29:23which He have made, you shall be called the children of Christ,
- 29:28His sons and His daughters. For behold, this day He has
- 29:33spiritually begotten you. For ye say that your hearts are
- 29:37changed through faith on His name.
- 29:43Therefore ye are born of him, and have become his sons and his
- 29:48daughters, continuing on with King Benjamin.
- 29:51And under this head ye are made free.
- 29:54And there is no other head whereby you can be made free.
- 29:58There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh.
- 30:02Therefore I would that you should take upon you the name of
- 30:06Christ, all you that have entered into a covenant with
- 30:10God, that you should be obedient unto the end of your lives.
- 30:14And it shall come to pass that whosoever doeth this shall be
- 30:17found on the right hand of God, for he shall know the name by
- 30:23which he is called, For he shall be called by the name of Christ
- 30:30still, King Benjamin. And now it shall come to pass,
- 30:33that whosoever shall not take upon him the name of Christ,
- 30:38must be called by some other name.
- 30:42Therefore he findeth himself on the left hand of God.
- 30:46And I would that you should remember also, that this is the
- 30:50name that I said unto you, that I would give unto you, that
- 30:53never should be blotted out, except it be through
- 30:58transgression. Therefore take heed that you do
- 31:01not transgress, that the name not be blotted out of your
- 31:05hearts. I say unto you, I would that you
- 31:08should remember to retain the name written always in your
- 31:13hearts, that you are not, that you are not found on the left
- 31:17hand of God, but that you here and know the voice by which you
- 31:21are called, and also the name by which He shall call you.
- 31:29End of quote. Long quote.
- 31:33The New Testament, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and
- 31:39Covenant are replete with references.
- 31:44And that's not all. That's not all of them, Not
- 31:47nearly. They are replete with references
- 31:50to the name of Jesus Christ, rather than Jesus Christ himself
- 31:57alone. One would expect references to
- 32:00Christ individually rather than pervasive references to his
- 32:05name. So again, what do they all mean?
- 32:13Names, as I said, are important. They help to order what would
- 32:17otherwise be chaos. Names identify not only who we
- 32:21are where we belong, but to whom we belong.
- 32:25By taking the name of Christ, we not only nominally but literally
- 32:30know and proclaim to whom and where we belong with Christ and
- 32:37our Eternal Father that we are one with them.
- 32:45By the name of Christ we know and declare unmistakably to
- 32:50everyone and anyone, everywhere and anywhere, who we are and
- 32:56where we belong, bringing order out of chaos.
- 33:01Additionally, the law of agency. Now this is important.
- 33:04The law of agency in the common law of the United States
- 33:08recognizes that a principal they may authorize another, the
- 33:12agent, to act in his behalf and in his name within the scope of
- 33:20the authority conferred. The relationship between the two
- 33:24is also referred to as principal and agent or master and servant.
- 33:32The servant undertakes to represent the master while
- 33:37engaged in the affairs and work of the master, usually when the
- 33:41master cannot be present. While the laws of men do not
- 33:46always reflect the laws laws of God, in this instance the law of
- 33:50agency is a very good parallel for what it means to take upon
- 33:57us the name of Christ and act in the name of Christ, and that
- 34:00salvation is in the name of Christ.
- 34:05To take the name of Christ implies willingness to be His
- 34:12agent, act in His behalf and do His work.
- 34:21Acting in the name of Christ means to represent him, do what
- 34:26He did and what He would have you do.
- 34:31Salvation is in the name of Christ by undertaking His work,
- 34:36building up His Kingdom on both on both sides of the veil, as an
- 34:41active contributing member and servant.
- 34:45Salvation is not in Jesus Christ by merely accepting Christ in
- 34:50your heart or even being made clean through His atonement
- 34:54alone, rather also doing the things He did acting in His
- 35:00name, which enables 1 to retain a remission of sins and have the
- 35:05oil the companionship of the Holy Ghost and thereby be
- 35:11permitted to enter His presence. If you want to get close to God,
- 35:18engage in his work. What would Jesus do?
- 35:24It's a wonderful question and focus that has been popularized
- 35:29throughout the Christian world like center choose the right.
- 35:35What would Jesus do is become a worldwide symbol to remind good
- 35:38people to focus on Christ. It is a worthy standard, but as
- 35:43far as I can tell it's not something the Lord said.
- 35:49He said rather follow me and do the things which you have seen
- 35:53me do. What did Jesus do is the greater
- 36:00question more than what would he do.
- 36:04Therefore he said, Hold up your light, that it may shine unto
- 36:08the world, Behold, I am the light which you shall hold up,
- 36:13that what you have seen me do. He also said, Verily, verily, I
- 36:19say unto you, that this is my gospel, and you know the things
- 36:23that you must do in my church, for the works which you have
- 36:26seen me do, that shall ye also do.
- 36:30For that which you have seen me do, even that shall ye do.
- 36:35Therefore, if you do these things, blessed are ye, for you
- 36:39should be lifted up at the last day.
- 36:42The Lord said, follow me. We have this incredible
- 36:48blessing, this benefit, the benefit of hindsight.
- 36:52We don't have to guess. We can't fairly say we can't
- 36:57know what Christ did. We are the only ones in the
- 37:01history of the world with the expansive view of history, the
- 37:05Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine of Covenants, the Pearl
- 37:09of Great Christ, and the fullness of the gospel of Jesus
- 37:12Christ. What would Jesus do again is a
- 37:16good question, but what did Jesus do?
- 37:19Is the better one all that gives meaning and identity to your
- 37:24individual name? If your name is a good name, it
- 37:29is because you made it so. No one else can do that.
- 37:34Again, names are important not only for what they give to us,
- 37:38but what what we make of them. Understanding the importance and
- 37:50purpose of baptism for the remission of sins.
- 37:53People occasionally say I wish I could be baptized again.
- 37:59Such a wish falls flat on the floor because it ignores the
- 38:03sacrament, which offers an opportunity for weekly
- 38:06reassessment and renewal of covenants.
- 38:11Although there are allusions to temple ordinances in the New
- 38:15Testament, Jesus expressly teaches and demonstrates only
- 38:21two ordinances, baptism and the sacrament.
- 38:28Those are also the two ordinances he revealed among the
- 38:31Nephi people, of which we have a clear record.
- 38:35Those two ordinances are prominent in both ministries.
- 38:39They go together. Life is beneficially comprised
- 38:45of a series of overlapping and intersecting cycles of days,
- 38:51seasons, and years. Each has a beginning and an end
- 38:56which links to yet another beginning and on and on.
- 39:02Both beginnings and ends are important with.
- 39:07With each beginning we we look forward with hope to what may
- 39:12unfold with renewed vigor to see it through.
- 39:16With With each end we may look back and assess what went well
- 39:22and would didn't go so well. These cycles should not be
- 39:29routine, rather essential breaks in a routine to look back long
- 39:35enough to better inform the next beginning.
- 39:39Some people do this routinely. With the beginning of a new
- 39:42year, for example, they look back over the year and they set
- 39:47resolutions for the new year. That same process should be
- 39:51replicated weekly and even daily for the annual resolutions to
- 39:56take effect because we are prone to forget.
- 40:01Oddly, we are especially quick to forget God, President Spencer
- 40:07W Kimball said. Perhaps the most important word
- 40:10in the dictionary is remember. While it is ironic that most
- 40:17important things are repressed by lesser but pressing things,
- 40:22maybe it is understandable. Because the most important
- 40:25things are not visible usually, and therefore not mindfully
- 40:30urgent. They must be remembered to be
- 40:34present. There may never have been a time
- 40:39when it is easier and yet harder to remember the most important
- 40:42things. Living in the dispensation of
- 40:46the fullness of times, you have more to help you remember than
- 40:49ever before. You have scriptures, the
- 40:52fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, more books and means of
- 40:57communication than ever before. All of which should help to keep
- 41:00the most important things top of mind.
- 41:05But at the same time, you we are bombarded by distractions, a
- 41:11tsunami of lesser things. Consequently, there is reason to
- 41:16believe the attention span of people is is shorter.
- 41:20Today. Many people are always plugged
- 41:23in, but not with the most important things.
- 41:26It is rare that something external is not directing or
- 41:30shading our thoughts. Sustained intentional thinking
- 41:35is not so common. The weekly cycle to remember is
- 41:41facilitated, of course, by the sacrament.
- 41:45Each Sabbath is an end in another beginning, which is
- 41:50reflected in the revealed words of the sacrament prayer itself.
- 41:56For me, the sacrament prayers represent Christ as the way in
- 42:00the life, In other words, the bread as well as the Savior, the
- 42:06blood and water. The bread may represent the life
- 42:11of Christ as the way. As you proclaim what you are
- 42:15willing to do. It is prospective, looking
- 42:19forward toward Christ. It is a statement of intention,
- 42:23a covenant or promise that you are willing to take His name,
- 42:28willing to remember Him always, and willing to keep His
- 42:32commandments, that you may always have His spirit to be
- 42:37with you. Will.
- 42:40What you are willing to do is especially important.
- 42:44In the end, it's a matter of will.
- 42:47What are you willing to do? The water, on the other hand, is
- 42:52retrospective. You look back over the week and
- 42:57see what went well and what did not, to better inform your
- 43:02willingness to take the name of Christ and keep His commandments
- 43:06in the next cycle. During the coming week.
- 43:10As you look back, you are mercifully spared from declaring
- 43:15something you cannot truthfully declare, namely, that you always
- 43:21kept the Lord's commandments and that you had a perfect week.
- 43:26Acting in the name of Christ and keeping His commandments are
- 43:29part of the declaration of what you are willing to do as you
- 43:33partake of the bread, Christ as the way in the life.
- 43:38But thankfully they are missing from the declaration of what you
- 43:42did as you take the water representing the blood of Christ
- 43:48who compensates for what you failed to do.
- 43:52Of the three elements of your declaration of will as you
- 43:57partake of the bread, the only one that survives to the
- 44:02declaration of what you actually did as you partake of the water
- 44:07is that you do always remember Him.
- 44:14This suggests 2 things. First, to always remember
- 44:18Christ, that you may have His Spirit to be with you is
- 44:22something you can always do because God would not expect you
- 44:29to falsely declare something you're not capable of doing.
- 44:33It must be an obsession. No half measures will do, but
- 44:40the standard to always remember Christ is more easily met than
- 44:44what one might suppose. It isn't to live a Christ like
- 44:50life in every instance. Rather it is to always measure
- 44:54your life against His, both your successes and your lapses.
- 45:02It is always to be mindful of Him in in both directions ahead
- 45:09and behind, whether in the context of thinking before
- 45:13before you act, thinking ahead, thinking what Christ did again
- 45:21the way the bread, or realizing after the fact how your actions
- 45:26fell short against that same standard of His life and
- 45:30teachings. The Savior in the water leading
- 45:36to repentance and enlightened improvement.
- 45:40To remember Him always is essentially to look to Christ as
- 45:44the standard in both directions, however successful you may or
- 45:50may not be in reaching that standard from day-to-day.
- 45:55Whenever we do, He should always be the standard against which we
- 45:59measure our lives. We can always do that.
- 46:04We can always remember Him. Secondly, always may also mean
- 46:12to not quit, keep at it, always press forward always no matter
- 46:20what. To always remember Christ
- 46:24suggests you never give up or give in, never stop trying,
- 46:28never lay down to rest. Finally, both the bread, Christ
- 46:35as the way and the water, the death and Atonement of Christ as
- 46:41the Savior are essential to what is most important, namely
- 46:47sanctification and always having God's Spirit to be with you.
- 46:55What a blessing are these cycles of of beginnings and endings
- 47:02which refresh and break what would otherwise be 1 long slog
- 47:07finally leading to death on the desert floor with without and
- 47:15without an end, and another beginning without a break,
- 47:20without an an Oasis here and there.
- 47:23You would become overburdened, eventually succumb to your
- 47:27mistakes and lose your way. There would be no opportunity to
- 47:31shed the burden of the past and move freely and confidently
- 47:34ahead with renewed hope, vigor and will for a new year, a new
- 47:40week, or a new day. As King Benjamin said, O man,
- 47:47remember and perish not. In the next episode we will
- 47:57consider the greatest blessing one may receive in this life.
- 48:04I hope you will join me then. Thank you.
