- 0:14Hi, and welcome to Serial Killers, the podcast all about the pest diseases,
- 0:19problems of cereal crops.
- 0:21And today we have a Halloween special.
- 0:26And today's subject is the ghost moth, or in the scientific language, Hepialis humuli.
- 0:34So it's called humuli because it was thought that it used to eat the roots of hop plants.
- 0:42And hop's scientific name is humulus lupulus
- 0:46probably the best scientific name to
- 0:49say humulus lupulus so linnaeus
- 0:52carl von lynn the swedish botanist and
- 0:55zoologist who came up with scientific names originally he
- 0:58was the first person to describe the ghost moth and
- 1:01so he he believed it was eating hop
- 1:04roots so he named it hepialis humuli even
- 1:08though it's subsequently defined that doesn't eat hop roots
- 1:11it's still got that name so scientific names don't change very
- 1:14often as i said there are beetles going around.
- 1:17The place that are named after adolf hitler and people
- 1:19haven't bothered to change their names because they very
- 1:23rarely get changed unless there's a a reason
- 1:25that that's definitely the wrong name to give it a good
- 1:29example is if it's previously been described by somebody else or
- 1:32it's not actually belonging to that plant family or
- 1:35that insect family so hepiarlis humuli
- 1:38is the ghost moth it's related to the swift moths
- 1:41is in the swift moth swift moth family and
- 1:45they are very interesting moths now.
- 1:48You won't have you may not have heard of the ghost moth
- 1:51but it unless you're a naturalist but
- 1:54it does eat cereal plants it does eat a lot of horticultural crops
- 1:58as well and it's a really interesting insect to
- 2:02look at because it's got its biology is is unlike a
- 2:05lot of the pests and diseases that we've talked about before okay so
- 2:08it's common name the ghost moth is named
- 2:11because it's white color of the adult
- 2:14males that are about four to five centimeters long and they
- 2:18have this weird dance that they fly
- 2:21about in at night when they're mating and they
- 2:23sort of like they sort of fly in
- 2:26a pendulum fashion to attract the
- 2:29females and they do that for a very specific reason we'll
- 2:32go on to the females are not
- 2:36ghost colored but they're sort of like a mustard color and they're five
- 2:39to seven centimeters long they're not the most disgusting looking
- 2:42moths in the world they're quite attractive if you're into moths a mustard one
- 2:46and a white moth so and they're much larger so they're five to seven centimeters
- 2:51long so in science we call that sexual dimorphism when one of the sexes is I
- 2:58was going to say genders then, didn't want to get into that.
- 3:00Minefield one of the sexes is much
- 3:03larger or smaller or different shaped or things like that so
- 3:06there's some some crabs have different shaped claws and
- 3:09things like that like that depending on the sex and ghost
- 3:13moths they they look completely different okay so
- 3:16being a moth it's related to moths
- 3:20and caterpillars so moths and butterflies are lepidoptera
- 3:23and so they they always have caterpillars that
- 3:27then form a pupa a chrysalis or
- 3:30a cocoon and then the
- 3:33adult the flying adult normally then pupates
- 3:36out and lays eggs and the ghost
- 3:39moth is no different it produces caterpillars however this
- 3:43is the key difference the one of the key differences
- 3:46is that the caterpillars of the ghost moth are white
- 3:49and with a like a reddish brown head and
- 3:53they live under the ground eating plant roots and so they're
- 3:56often referred to as maggots or larvae not
- 3:59caterpillars even though they strictly speaking are caterpillars so you
- 4:02might mistake them for a grub of a of some other type of pest and they they
- 4:08can get fairly deep down in the soil and the ghost moth caterpillar can eat
- 4:13a wide range of different plants so what we term polyphagus it's not it's not.
- 4:20Obligate for one species of crop or plant for
- 4:23it to eat so it can eat cereals it can
- 4:26eat lettuce it's a big problem in carrots and it's
- 4:29especially a problem in forestry it also eats weeds
- 4:32like nettles and the reason it's a problem in
- 4:35forestry and not in cereals is because it's it takes
- 4:38two years from the egg being laid
- 4:41for it to pupate and then turn into an adult
- 4:44so they spend two years underground and as
- 4:47they spend two years underground the damage gets significantly
- 4:50worse in that second year and towards the end because
- 4:53they're eating so much more and their population grows now
- 4:56in a arable field you're going
- 4:59to get cultivation of some sort in
- 5:03in after at least after a year and so that
- 5:06brings up the caterpillars and they
- 5:09can be ate by their significant pest
- 5:12predators like birds badgers foxes
- 5:15parasitic wasps will attack them moles will eat them and especially bats okay
- 5:22so come back to that as well so unlike the very hungry caterpillar in the kids
- 5:28book that eats a sausage a salami a piece of cherry pie two leaves and,
- 5:34By the end, you know, it gets very hungry and has to have a rest. It has a stomachache.
- 5:38This one is eating cereals, lettuce, carrots, pines, nettles.
- 5:43And then after two years, it's pupating.
- 5:46So it is a very hungry caterpillar if you allow it to be in your crop for two years.
- 5:51Now, I said the parasitic wasps, every insect has a parasitic wasp that will attack it.
- 5:56Even parasitic wasps have parasitic wasps that attack it.
- 5:59And even those parasitic wasps that have parasitic wasps that attack them have
- 6:03parasitic wasps that attack them. So they are the underappreciated biocontrol wasps.
- 6:09But the bats are the interesting one when it comes to the ghost moth.
- 6:12So on our Halloween theme, we'll continue that with bats.
- 6:15And the reason bats are important is because the ghost moth cannot hear.
- 6:21It is a deaf moth. And
- 6:25so normally a lot of moths have
- 6:28ultrasonic hearing to warn them
- 6:31of bat attacks and they can evade the bat however
- 6:35the the ghost moth is deaf so it's
- 6:38thought that the ghost moth and
- 6:41other moth so moths after the ghost moth evolved hearing to
- 6:45to evade bats
- 6:48that evolved after these moths so these these moths
- 6:51evolutionary predate bats so what
- 6:54do they do to prevent themselves being eaten by bats well that's
- 6:57something called lecking so lecking
- 7:00is this twilight flight of the
- 7:03male ghost moths in this pendulum fashion and they all the males congregate
- 7:09together and they compete for the females they release a pheromone to attract
- 7:14the females and you might read that this pheromone is described as goats like
- 7:20like almost like it smells of goats but.
- 7:23On the literature it's a bit confusing because some of
- 7:26the literature says they smell of the goat moth so do
- 7:29they smell of the goat moth or do they smell of goats it's a
- 7:32bit confusing that so this lacking occurs at twilight and
- 7:35the white shiny ghost moths make
- 7:38a quite an interesting display and then that attracts
- 7:41the females and especially these pheromones that attract them
- 7:44and then they mate and then the males just fall down
- 7:47and die after they've mated and then the females they
- 7:51go off and lay eggs and they can lay up to 600 well on
- 7:54average they lay 600 eggs in four
- 7:57days but that range can be anywhere from 200 to
- 8:001600 eggs so that's a lot of eggs and that's
- 8:04all the resources for those eggs has come
- 8:07from the caterpillar feeding on the plant roots
- 8:10none of that resources comes from the moth
- 8:14feeding on nectar or pollen of flowers as
- 8:17other moths might do because the ghost moth completely lacks any mouth parts
- 8:24or feeding parts in its adult phase so it can't taste it can't eat it can't
- 8:29hear anything so it's a good job it can smell because that's that's maybe why
- 8:33lacking so important because it's one of the few senses that it can actually do.
- 8:37So and after those those females have laid their
- 8:40eggs they go and die as well so they
- 8:43don't stay in their adult phase for very long and then
- 8:47they those obviously those eggs lay into the hatch into
- 8:50the larvae which can be up to five centimeters long they can
- 8:53actually live for up to three years as well in some situations and they
- 8:57grow they have 12 what we call instars or
- 8:5912 malts as i say second year they
- 9:02do most damage not sure how that relates to direct drilling
- 9:05but there could be an issue with direct drilling and not bringing ghost
- 9:08moths to the service but i mean don't let
- 9:12ghost moths keep you awake at night because they're not a major pest
- 9:15so they they pupate in april to may
- 9:18and then they emerge june to july so
- 9:21there's a there's a fairly long pupation period
- 9:24where they lie dormant or something not dormant but they're they're
- 9:27metamorphosizing in their chrysalis there other halloween
- 9:31moth related issues not to
- 9:34be confused with the the ghost moth with the death's
- 9:38head hawk moth which you will have
- 9:40seen on the film silence
- 9:43the lambs that's the one that has a sometimes it
- 9:47looks like it has a skull on its thorax on its
- 9:51back and in silence the lambs
- 9:54the the serial killer put it into people's throats
- 9:57it's pretty grim it's not the nicest
- 10:00of moths in reality either because it invades beehives.
- 10:05And steals honey and pollen from.
- 10:08The beehives and it tricks them into thinking that it's one of the bees and.
- 10:12It's it's an african species that migrates to the uk so it does that that species
- 10:18even though it's in silence of the lands that's based in southern usa it actually
- 10:22does one of the species does occur in the uk.
- 10:26But luckily, the Death's Head hawk moth is not a serial killer.
- 10:30It's not a pest of arable crops. But the ghost moth is.
- 10:34You don't need to change your cultivation strategies or pest and disease control
- 10:41systems because basically everything you do in arable systems keeps their numbers to a good minimum.
- 10:47It's not a vulnerable or endangered species, so you don't need to worry about that.
- 10:51It's just something interesting. if you're out in the fields in
- 10:54the evening you may see a lecking of
- 10:57ghost moths and yeah take it
- 11:00send us a picture if you've got one probably quite difficult to
- 11:03get a good picture because it's at twilight but it'd be very interesting to
- 11:06know if you've encountered any mass congregations of
- 11:09ghost moths on your farm or around where you
- 11:12live just going back to lecking i forgot to
- 11:15say how that's linked to bat predation and it's
- 11:19thought that the ghost moth congregate in
- 11:22this big lex and do their display and attract the females
- 11:25in a short period of time at twilight so.
- 11:29They can get their mating over and done with sort out.
- 11:32Which ones they want to mate with really quickly before the
- 11:35bats can come and predate them and eat them all up
- 11:38and so congregating together is a strategy that
- 11:41lots of animals use to to reduce predation and then and
- 11:44then making it occurs so in such a short period of time
- 11:47it means that they can they don't need to dodge bats they
- 11:49just get away mate die and then go and the females
- 11:52go off and lay eggs thanks very much for listening i really
- 11:56appreciate it as a thank you for reaching the end
