Transcript
- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scrolls, Jake Weber tells fans to stop
- 0:04shipping him with his ex, A deal that Taylor Swift signed years
- 0:08ago may make artists millions of dollars and why fans are
- 0:13convinced that Zoella is missing.
- 0:16Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:20daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:23from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:26Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like
- 0:29today, I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the
- 0:32Australian youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:37Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:38A Friday mini scroll. As always, our Friday minis are
- 0:42random so get ready for this one.
- 0:46But please Spotify star rate US. I know I keep asking and I
- 0:50promise I will stop asking once we hit 1000 until we have
- 0:54another benchmark. But I'll give you guys a rest,
- 0:57OK? I promise.
- 0:58Actually, this is a fun story. So when I was in high school,
- 1:02there was this program we were trying to raise money for, I
- 1:06can't remember what charity, but it was some type of charity.
- 1:08OK, some club at my high school was trying to raise money for a
- 1:12charity and they did this initiative called Stop the Bop
- 1:16where every single morning before the bell, they would play
- 1:20music in our high school. So in the halls, so you when
- 1:22you're like walking to class or talking to your friends or like
- 1:25in the bathroom, doing your makeup, whatever, there would
- 1:27always be music playing. So for this period of time until
- 1:30they hit a certain threshold of money that they were trying to
- 1:34hit for this charity initiative, they played Mmmbop by Hansen
- 1:39over and over and over again the whole morning, over and over
- 1:43again for like weeks and weeks and weeks.
- 1:45And then we all started to like love it.
- 1:47The point was that it was going to annoy us so much that we
- 1:49would all contribute to stop the Bob, but it kind of felt like we
- 1:53were in some fun like teen ROM com movie.
- 1:56So people were just actually enjoying it.
- 1:58And then people were not donating because they didn't
- 2:00want Bob to stop playing over our loudspeaker every single
- 2:04morning. So I'm taking a page out of that
- 2:06book for the 1000 Spotify star ratings.
- 2:08I promise I will stop asking at 1000.
- 2:11Also, if you still want to give your feedback on how you feel
- 2:15about celebrity endorsements, the link is in the description.
- 2:17Annabelle will close the survey next week, so make sure you guys
- 2:21do it before then. All right, let's get into the
- 2:23stories for today. So the first story that I have
- 2:26for you guys today is that Jake Webber is addressing fans,
- 2:30shipping him with his ex-girlfriend Tara Yummy.
- 2:33Yesterday, Jake Webber took to TikTok to address what seems to
- 2:36be an uptick of edits shipping him and his ex-girlfriend Tara
- 2:40Yummy. So he began by doubling down on
- 2:42the fact that the breakup was mutual before criticizing social
- 2:45media users who insinuate that Jake had broken Tara's heart.
- 2:48He also questioned by social media users continue to discuss
- 2:52the topic, telling them to move on.
- 2:55And then Tara Yummy shared a similar sentiment in the
- 2:58comments section, Writing my heart is not broken lol.
- 3:00It's full. We have a beautiful friendship.
- 3:03Yeah, I'm going to say this because there's been like an
- 3:05overwhelming amount of ship edits of me and Tara these past
- 3:07few weeks. The breakup was mutual, that is
- 3:10the truth. I don't know why people warp it
- 3:12in their heads. It was mutual.
- 3:14And if you're creating your observations on the breakup
- 3:17video, she's an openly emotional person.
- 3:20I'm not. So it's unfair to judge based on
- 3:22that. People have to understand that
- 3:24at that stage in our life, we were changing a lot.
- 3:28I mean, look at us back then versus now.
- 3:30We're like entirely different people.
- 3:31We both agreed that was the best case scenario.
- 3:34And it was, yeah, we said we wanted to be our own people,
- 3:37which is true. People think we hang out every
- 3:39single day. We don't.
- 3:40We put videos together and that's the only thing that they
- 3:43see of us online because most of our life is private.
- 3:46Of course it's going to seem that way.
- 3:47And no, I didn't break her heart.
- 3:49She wanted the same thing as me. So it's lame that she's getting
- 3:52painted as this this helpless, heartbroken girl.
- 3:55That's not true. Now, social media users are
- 3:59skeptical that Tara is telling the truth because of comments
- 4:02that she's made in the past. When she appeared on Just Trish
- 4:05in 2024, she had said that maybe they would get back together
- 4:09down the line, but who knows? Keep in mind that was two years
- 4:12ago, so lots could have changed from then.
- 4:14But social media users are also pointed to a comment that she
- 4:17made in a recent episode of her series Stuck in a Car with So.
- 4:21Funnily enough, this episode also featured Jake's younger
- 4:24sister Jillian Webber. They were talking about weddings
- 4:27when Jillian asked Tara if she would ever get married.
- 4:30Tara then said, I don't know, I think there was a point in my
- 4:33life where I could, I could have seen myself getting married, but
- 4:36that's far gone. And like, I just, I don't see
- 4:39myself loving someone enough to getting married ever again.
- 4:41So people obviously assumed that her saying I don't see myself
- 4:45loving someone enough again was her referring to how much she
- 4:49loved Jake. If you guys have no idea who
- 4:51these people are, they're influencers, they're Tik tokers.
- 4:54But Tara and Jake, they were in a relationship for five years
- 4:56before breaking up toward the end of 2023.
- 4:59So it's been a long time. It's been a long time.
- 5:02Their breakup was very public, with both creators sharing
- 5:05videos explaining their decision.
- 5:06Despite no bad blood, they said they felt the breakup was best
- 5:09for both of them because they met at such a young age.
- 5:12Tara was 18 and Jake was 20. Fans were shocked by the breakup
- 5:17as Tara and Jake had been together for a long time.
- 5:19And they were really beloved and everybody was like, obsessed
- 5:21with them as a couple. Since the breakup, the two have
- 5:24continued to collaborate online and have remained close.
- 5:28Tara is even going to be a bridesmaid in Jillian Jillian
- 5:31Weber, Jake's younger sister's wedding.
- 5:34Now, Jake has seemingly been in a relationship with Kenzie Luby
- 5:38since around the middle of 2024. And speculation really picked up
- 5:42around the couple after Coachella, with social media
- 5:44users convinced that they're no longer together.
- 5:47But the breakup rumors could explain why the Tara and Jake
- 5:51ship edits have seemingly picked up and why Jake now feels like
- 5:55he needs to address it. Because it's like, really
- 5:56exploded recently. Interestingly, sentiment towards
- 5:59Jake's video has been pretty negative on the LA Influencer
- 6:03snark subreddit. For example, many users are
- 6:05claiming that Tara and Jake lean into their friendship and flirt
- 6:08with one another for clout. As one user wrote quote, people
- 6:11wouldn't still be making edits if y'all weren't constantly
- 6:14flirting with each other in videos.
- 6:16Either stop flirting with each other or come to terms that fans
- 6:18are going to ship y'all if you're giving them content to
- 6:21ship y'all with. All right, the next story that I
- 6:23have for you guys today is Taylor Swift's contract with UMG
- 6:27is possibly about to make some artists a lot of money.
- 6:31OK, so this is a bit of like a convoluted story and it's also
- 6:36kind of mini tech adjacent, so bear with me, I'm going to do my
- 6:39best. In early April, Universal Music
- 6:42Group received a bid from the Capital Management firm Pershing
- 6:46Square. Annabelle and I were looking
- 6:48into the story and we kept saying perishing square, really
- 6:50perishing square. And I'm like, they cannot be
- 6:52perishing square, perishing Square.
- 6:55And then we're like no Pershing Square quote to acquire all
- 6:59outstanding shares of the company through a business
- 7:02combination transaction. So this was essentially like an
- 7:05unprovoked bid to buy the company.
- 7:09Part of this proposal was that UMG liquidate 50% of its Spotify
- 7:13shares. So right now, UMG owns 3% of
- 7:17Spotify and this proposal suggested that they liquidate
- 7:211.5%, which will be worth $1.4 billion.
- 7:26So the reason why Pershing Square made this bid is because
- 7:30they did own 10% of UMG at one point.
- 7:33They ended up, I think, selling some of those shares at a
- 7:36certain point. But regardless, I believe they
- 7:38still own a percentage of the business and therefore they
- 7:41obviously have some insight into the financials.
- 7:43And Bill Ackman, who is the owner and CEO of Pershing, he
- 7:47believes that UMG is worth more or could be worth more like in
- 7:52terms of their share price based on their internal like, business
- 7:56successes than what the stock price is currently listed as.
- 8:00That's getting a little bit ahead of myself.
- 8:01Why does UMG own Spotify shares to begin with?
- 8:05So Universal Music Group, UMG has shares in Spotify mainly
- 8:09because back in the day, Spotify needed these major record labels
- 8:13to survive. And the labels use that as
- 8:16leverage to negotiate ownership stakes early on.
- 8:19So basically, Spotify needed these licensing deals when they
- 8:21were first starting out. They didn't have the capital to
- 8:24funds the licensing deals, so equity was part of the deals
- 8:27that they made with these major music labels.
- 8:29Now, why would Pershing Square want UMG to sell its Spotify
- 8:33shares ahead of a potential takeover?
- 8:36First, it makes the takeover easier to finance.
- 8:39So that will give UMG billions in cash.
- 8:42And that cash can be used to pay down their debts, fund buybacks
- 8:46or dividends, and also reduce how much outside funding a buyer
- 8:50might need #2 it can make shareholders more likely to
- 8:53accept a deal. So if investors know that
- 8:55they're about to receive a major buyback or dividend funded by
- 8:58the Spotify stock, then they're more likely to do it basically
- 9:02because they're going to get paid #3 this is apparently a
- 9:04very classic private equity style move.
- 9:07It's common for takeovers to identify a company with valuable
- 9:10non core assets, sell those assets, and then use the
- 9:13proceeds to make the transaction cheaper or more profitable.
- 9:16And four, it reduces the complexity of, UM, GS valuation.
- 9:20Essentially, a Spotify stake complicates how investors value
- 9:24UMG. OK.
- 9:25So now on Wednesday, the UMG board of directors has gone out
- 9:29independently and confirmed that it will be selling half of its
- 9:33Spotify shares and doubling its share buyback program.
- 9:36Now, when I say independently, I believe the wording here, like
- 9:40why the media is reporting on independently is because I think
- 9:44they got this bid or like this proposal.
- 9:47And we're like, not sure if we're going to take that, but
- 9:50like maybe we actually should do this like Spotify share thing
- 9:54anyways. It's kind of how it's being
- 9:56framed in the media. I'm not totally sure if that's
- 9:58accurate, but they do qualify that it is independent.
- 10:02So I think it's independent of like this deal possibly going
- 10:05ahead. So proceeds from the Spotify
- 10:07share sales, the 1.5% that they're going to sell, that will
- 10:11do two things. First, it will help fund their
- 10:13own shares buybacks. So the company I believe will be
- 10:16buying back a percentage of their own shares and also it
- 10:20will be distributed amongst its signed artists.
- 10:23So why? And what does this have to do
- 10:26with Taylor Swift? So when the major record labels
- 10:29accepted stock in Spotify, like it back in the day, basically
- 10:33they all agreed that their artists would be compensated in
- 10:36the event that they sold their Spotify shares.
- 10:40So in 2016, both Warner and Sony made this commitment.
- 10:44And then two years later in 2018, UMG agreed to do the same.
- 10:48Now this is where Taylor comes in.
- 10:49So Sony was the first to cash in.
- 10:52It sold off part of its Spotify shares shortly after the
- 10:54company's IPO in April 2018. Warner followed a few months
- 10:58later and sold its entire Spotify stock.
- 11:00But the two labels handled the payouts differently.
- 11:03So Sony distributed the money without factoring in whether
- 11:06artists were quote, UN quote recouped, meaning it's artists
- 11:09received paying even if they still owed the record label
- 11:13money under their record deals. So if the record label had, you
- 11:17know, put X amount of millions of dollars into marketing an
- 11:20artist, and then we know that sometimes these deals require an
- 11:23artist to pay that marketing expense back or like a
- 11:27percentage of it back in their contract.
- 11:29So with Sony, when they sold their Spotify stock, the artist
- 11:33got the money and they didn't have to worry about if they
- 11:36still owe the record label any of this, like recuperation
- 11:40operated costs. Like they still just got the
- 11:41money themselves. Whereas with Warner, they
- 11:44actually took recoupment into account.
- 11:46So that allowed the label to keep a larger share of the
- 11:48profits. That same year, 2018, Taylor
- 11:51Swift was negotiating her contract to sign with the
- 11:53world's biggest music company, UMG.
- 11:56So UMG had already agreed to share proceeds from Spotify
- 11:59stock sales with artists, like I said, but she pushed them
- 12:03further, asking the label to guarantee those payments would
- 12:06be non recoupable. Recoupable.
- 12:09Yeah, that's the right word. I'm like, that doesn't sound
- 12:11right, but I think it's right. Recoupable.
- 12:13So similar to what Sony did basically, where they didn't
- 12:15take that into account and the artist gets to pocket the money
- 12:18they don't have to put some of that towards their recuperation.
- 12:21She essentially used her leverage as somebody with such
- 12:24an incredibly valuable catalog of music to advocate for artists
- 12:32and their rights in terms of the money that they make from
- 12:34streaming and their deals with their labels.
- 12:37And we know that Taylor is very passionate about that.
- 12:40Like, that is not like something new.
- 12:41That's been definitely a trend throughout her career.
- 12:44And I think sometimes it's looked upon as she does a lot of
- 12:50things for the betterment of herself.
- 12:52And I don't think we often realize how much the decisions
- 12:58that she make that seem to only impact her in the moment
- 13:01actually can impact the wider industry.
- 13:04And this is an example of her kind of like throwing her weight
- 13:06around for the betterment or like the good of the industry.
- 13:09So, yes, now that UMG has said it's going to sell 1.5% of its
- 13:13stocks, all of these artists based on this deal that they
- 13:17signed with Taylor Swift back in 2018, these artists are going to
- 13:20get paid and they're not going to have to put that payment
- 13:23towards their recuperation fees. So I feel like this story plus
- 13:28her New York Times interview, like this is a good week, NPR,
- 13:33for Taylor Swift. This is a really good week for
- 13:35her. OK.
- 13:36And the last story that I have for you guys, this is a random
- 13:38one, but you know what, It's all over my for you page and it
- 13:42might be for you guys too. But fans are convinced that
- 13:44Zoella is missing. So Zoe Sugg, OG vlogger Zoella,
- 13:51she has not posted anything on her social media.
- 13:53As somebody whose full time job as far as we know is social
- 13:56media, since she did Vlogmas back in December, she's posted
- 14:00no new photos since the beginning of January.
- 14:04No stories, no comments, no vlogs and she didn't even post
- 14:08anything on her birthday on March 28th.
- 14:10There are some wild fan theories.
- 14:12One of the most prominent is that maybe something happened to
- 14:14her pet pug. Although Alfie, her husband,
- 14:17they're not. They're not husband and wife
- 14:18yet, I don't think, but like her partner has said, that's not the
- 14:21case. There's also a lot of people
- 14:23that for some reason believe that they're in like a massive
- 14:26amount of debt. If you guys know why people
- 14:27believe that, let me know. But there is people who believe
- 14:30that they're in a lot of debt and maybe that has something to
- 14:33do with them pulling back. However, I would argue that if
- 14:36their main source of income, as far as we know, I believe is
- 14:39social media, I mean, that's at least where they can make the
- 14:42most money probably. I mean, maybe not even anymore
- 14:45to be honest. But, you know, like, it is like
- 14:47a main source of income for them.
- 14:50I love how, like, everything that I'm saying about this
- 14:52story, I'm like, questioning as I'm saying it, it can be such a
- 14:55big source of income for them. Like, I don't know why they
- 14:57would pull back if they needed the money.
- 14:59They would probably just be posting more.
- 15:01Now. Alfie did return to his own
- 15:02Instagram in March. He shared a photo of Zoe with
- 15:05their daughters for International Women's Day.
- 15:07And there are people who are saying who are like, from
- 15:10Brighton, which is where they live, saying, like, they've seen
- 15:12her out and about and acting normal.
- 15:14And she seems fine. I'm sure she's just taking a
- 15:16break from social media. She's been creating content for
- 15:2017 years. Like, would you want to do the
- 15:22exact same job for 17 years? Especially because it's no
- 15:26longer this really exciting, super lucrative thing anymore,
- 15:30right? Like there was a period of time
- 15:32where it was just the biggest thing and you could make so much
- 15:35money and it was probably so exciting.
- 15:37And anything is going to dull after 17 years, don't get me
- 15:40wrong, but especially because the money is definitely not like
- 15:43it used to be. So yeah, I imagine she's
- 15:46probably just taking a break. But the conspiracy theories are
- 15:49crazy and everybody who is obsessed with them is posting
- 15:53online being like, where is Zoella?
- 15:56Anyways guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 15:58Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 16:01Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 16:02Please Spotify star rate US, help us stop the bop.
- 16:06I love you guys and I will talk to you guys on Monday.
