Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well this March the Starfish Swim Group now they provide
- 0:03Speaker 1: free swimming lessons for kids with disabilities. They're going to
- 0:07Speaker 1: be swimming and taking on a challenge to raise money
- 0:10Speaker 1: for reach Out for Youth Mental Health Support Group. Now
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's all part of LAPS for Life and we know
- 0:17Speaker 1: that over two million young Australians do suffer from mental
- 0:20Speaker 1: health problems. However, it's really very alarming that over one
- 0:24Speaker 1: million of those are unable to access the professional help
- 0:28Speaker 1: that they need. And reach Out is an online forum
- 0:31Speaker 1: for young people to seek the help and support that
- 0:34Speaker 1: they need. Now joining me on the line is the
- 0:38Speaker 1: wonderful Donna Rusham, who many of you will know who
- 0:41Speaker 1: was indeed well, she's the founder of the Starfish Swim
- 0:45Speaker 1: Group and also the coordinator of Variety and t Starfish
- 0:49Speaker 1: Swim Group. Good morning to you, Donna.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Good morning Katie. How are you?
- 0:53Speaker 1: I am very good now, Donna. For those out there
- 0:56Speaker 1: listening who don't know much about the Starfish Swim Group,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I know you you've come on the show before and
- 1:01Speaker 1: told us about the stuff ISSSIOM group, but just explain
- 1:03Speaker 1: it to our listeners.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Okay. I started it in two thousand and fine, to
- 1:10Speaker 2: give children with disabilities, special needs an opportunity to swim,
- 1:17Speaker 2: not in a group. It's very hard for these kids
- 1:20Speaker 2: to swim in mainstream groups. So we started with probably
- 1:23Speaker 2: ten kids and then we went down to now where
- 1:25Speaker 2: we're at over that period of time where we do
- 1:28Speaker 2: one on one instruction, one on one with a teacher
- 1:32Speaker 2: in an environment that's quiet and yeah, very you know,
- 1:37Speaker 2: really good for the kids for concentration and focusing and
- 1:40Speaker 2: so forth. We've got probably eighty kids in the program.
- 1:44Speaker 2: We've got three different programs, so we've got one on
- 1:47Speaker 2: Saturday morning that's six months through about four or five
- 1:51Speaker 2: afternoon program that goes from five or six to about twelve,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and then over at ten and that's at Mimiciga and
- 1:57Speaker 2: then over at Henry School. We've got those that are
- 2:00Speaker 2: getting ready for a bit of stroke correction and a longer,
- 2:03Speaker 2: deeper pool. So we've got about ten twelve into that
- 2:07Speaker 2: program as well. So yeah, pretty full on program.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's a fantastic program, Donna, and I know that so
- 2:13Speaker 1: many territory families absolutely love bringing their kids to this
- 2:18Speaker 1: staff is some group and what it does for the
- 2:21Speaker 1: children that actually take part.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yes, Oh look, Katie, it's you know me, I'm very
- 2:28Speaker 2: very passionate about what I do and giving these kids
- 2:30Speaker 2: an opportunity that is probably not available to them. It's
- 2:35Speaker 2: just really you take kids with autism, it's really hard
- 2:37Speaker 2: for them to focus when there's three or four other
- 2:40Speaker 2: kids in the water. And we've just over the years,
- 2:44Speaker 2: we've just seen amazing results coming out. We've seen parents
- 2:47Speaker 2: sitting on the side with tears running down their face thinking,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, I would never thought that they'd be able
- 2:52Speaker 2: to do this or that you know that you know
- 2:54Speaker 2: their behaviors would be too bad. But once you put
- 2:57Speaker 2: them into once you look at them as the as
- 3:00Speaker 2: the prime thing is the core and work out what
- 3:02Speaker 2: their needs are. Not as a teacher saying this is
- 3:05Speaker 2: what I can do and you fit into me, our
- 3:07Speaker 2: mindset is very different. We look at the child, what
- 3:10Speaker 2: are their needs and how can we do best and
- 3:12Speaker 2: how can they get the most benefits out of our programs. So, yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think that it speaks for itself, Katie.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it truly does.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Your wonderful group, the Starfishome group, they're also this month
- 3:25Speaker 1: they're doing something for charity. They're going to be raising
- 3:28Speaker 1: money as part of lapse for life and they're raising
- 3:32Speaker 1: that money for reach out, aren't they.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yes, this is so exciting. I mean one of our teachers, Tanya,
- 3:40Speaker 2: brought it to my attention. She has had some past
- 3:44Speaker 2: experience with the family that she knew, and she said, Donna,
- 3:47Speaker 2: this looks good. We looked at it and we said, right,
- 3:50Speaker 2: we're taking our whole program through this, which is really
- 3:53Speaker 2: exciting because you say, how can a one year old
- 3:56Speaker 2: child twim? So what we're doing and those can swim,
- 4:00Speaker 2: those that can do some laps, the laps are being
- 4:03Speaker 2: counted and recorded. Now those little ones that are not
- 4:07Speaker 2: up to swimming with they're all being given a challenge.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So a little one can be just allowing you to
- 4:15Speaker 2: tip water over their heads, waiting at the side of
- 4:19Speaker 2: the pool till the instructor calls you in. So every
- 4:21Speaker 2: child in our program has been given a little challenge
- 4:25Speaker 2: and we are recording all that. Oh well, those that
- 4:28Speaker 2: can do last those that aren't are still very much
- 4:32Speaker 2: a part of it, and those families as well. Donna,
- 4:34Speaker 2: that is awesome.
- 4:36Speaker 1: What's the response been from the kids? How are they going?
- 4:39Speaker 1: I mean we're sort of nine days into March now, Yes, yes.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Well, today, we've raised eight hundred and seventy one online.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We've got another three hundred and twenty cash donations to
- 4:51Speaker 2: come in and that has given two hundred and eighteen
- 4:55Speaker 2: youth the vital mental health support that they need. So
- 4:59Speaker 2: and and so far this March, these amazing kids have
- 5:02Speaker 2: swum a collective distance of seventeen point eight three kilometers.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Winch is a quivl, which is the equivalent of swimming
- 5:10Speaker 2: from Henry Avenue the pools out to Gateway. And how
- 5:14Speaker 2: as exciting is that?
- 5:15Speaker 1: That is so cool? Are they just pumped? Are they
- 5:18Speaker 1: really proud of themselves because they should be.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, those that really know what they're doing, So that
- 5:24Speaker 2: they set a doll so they've got paperwork. Tanya's recording hers,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Robin's recording her. So in week one of they've done
- 5:31Speaker 2: four laps, will challenge them the next week to go
- 5:34Speaker 2: five laps. So they come once a week. That they're
- 5:37Speaker 2: not swimming every day. It's just their normal lessons that
- 5:39Speaker 2: we have, but it's being recorded and a challenge is
- 5:42Speaker 2: setting out to those. So the laps there are those
- 5:45Speaker 2: that have been able to, some have been able to.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know, they're swimming, may not be up to the
- 5:50Speaker 2: higher ablebody once. Ye. So the ones that can, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 2: if they can do it half a lap and then
- 5:59Speaker 2: do an stop, you another half a lap that will
- 6:02Speaker 2: be counted as a lap.
- 6:03Speaker 1: That is so great.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So the challenge is for twenty kilometers for the whole thing.
- 6:09Speaker 2: It's two kilometers per person if you are dis joining
- 6:13Speaker 2: in yourself to do the lapse for Life online, for
- 6:16Speaker 2: a broute, for a team, it's twenty kilometers. Well, where
- 6:22Speaker 2: as I said, seventeen point eighty three, we're going gangbusters.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I love this. I've got the biggest smile on my
- 6:29Speaker 1: faced on or I love what the staff Ish Swim
- 6:32Speaker 1: Group does and what it means for a start, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: then the fact that you guys are doing laps for
- 6:37Speaker 1: life and for such a very worthy cause, to me,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I just think it's incredible stuff.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Well, we like to think that we're community focused, that
- 6:48Speaker 2: we are helping others. You know, we are always asking
- 6:51Speaker 2: for donations to help whatever, even though we've got the
- 6:54Speaker 2: variety of the children's charity who are wonderful our sponsors.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's just we want to be seen out there as
- 7:00Speaker 2: doing things to help other people. And you know, I
- 7:03Speaker 2: think the thing is none of us want to be
- 7:05Speaker 2: put what you know, let's get back to what this
- 7:07Speaker 2: is about, this reach for life, and none of us
- 7:10Speaker 2: ever want to be put in that position. And this
- 7:12Speaker 2: you know, we're working with youth parents. I'm sure none
- 7:16Speaker 2: of us would agree with me. None of us want
- 7:18Speaker 2: to be put in that position where you know, we
- 7:20Speaker 2: are faced with it with one of our youth, with
- 7:22Speaker 2: the suicide or whatever. There's a lot of mental health
- 7:24Speaker 2: problems out there, but you know, this organization absolutely needs
- 7:30Speaker 2: the support and the awareness. It's funds, we're raising funds,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but trying to raise awareness as well to how to
- 7:36Speaker 2: help the young people out there. So yeah, it's yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 2: As I said before, I'm very passionate about this. You are,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and so are our teachers, and so are our parents.
- 7:45Speaker 2: The kids that can understand, So we're trying to the
- 7:49Speaker 2: teachers are trying to impart into the children that understand
- 7:52Speaker 2: what they're doing and make them feel very much a
- 7:55Speaker 2: part of it as well.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Donald, this is fantastic. Now, if there is anybody
- 8:00Speaker 1: out there listening who thinks, do you know what, I
- 8:02Speaker 1: want to make a donation to the Starfish Swim Group
- 8:05Speaker 1: while they embark on this journey for the month of March.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Where can they go to?
- 8:11Speaker 2: They can go online. I mean I can either send
- 8:14Speaker 2: you the links that can go online, or they can
- 8:17Speaker 2: ring me if they just want to make a cash
- 8:19Speaker 2: donation and I can put it on and then the
- 8:21Speaker 2: receipt so that they can get a receipt the receipt
- 8:24Speaker 2: if they give me their email address, well receipt will
- 8:27Speaker 2: come back to them.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And look, if anyone contacts us here at the station,
- 8:30Speaker 1: we can certainly pass on those details. But they can
- 8:33Speaker 1: head to Lapse for Life as well, can't they And
- 8:34Speaker 1: they can search for Starfish Swim Group.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yes, Laps for Life. Well, they can go under its
- 8:39Speaker 2: Left for Life dot com dot au slashboard fundraiser Staffish
- 8:44Speaker 2: Swim Group three nine to five four. But I think
- 8:46Speaker 2: if you brought the first bit in, it'll probably come
- 8:48Speaker 2: up and you can follow what we're doing on there.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, this is awesome. So yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And Ian Thorps the national ambassador. So I mean that's
- 8:57Speaker 2: most of the kids you know who are and we
- 8:59Speaker 2: all know who are you, so that you know that
- 9:01Speaker 2: gives a good clout as well. I mean one of
- 9:03Speaker 2: the best swimmers we've ever.
- 9:04Speaker 1: You know, absolutely absolutely. Oh, everyone loves Thorpeye is An
- 9:10Speaker 1: He was an incredible swimmer. Now, Donna, we will make
- 9:14Speaker 1: sure that we catch up with you again throughout the
- 9:17Speaker 1: month of March to find out how the kids are tracking.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Let them know we think that they are absolute legends
- 9:23Speaker 1: doing this.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I love it.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I love the fact that even the little ease who
- 9:27Speaker 1: aren't able to swim those laps, that they've got different
- 9:29Speaker 1: goals to try and get through March.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And that's what makes it really special. I think. So
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's just not those that can do laps. The little
- 9:37Speaker 2: challenge is thrown out so they can be part of it.
- 9:40Speaker 2: We're a whole big family in this. Yeah, I'm all
- 9:42Speaker 2: part of it, and everybody's doing their little bit wonderful.
- 9:47Speaker 2: That's what makes it really nice.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it really does wonderful wonderful stuff. Well, Donna Rusham,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I always love our chats. Thank you so much for
- 9:54Speaker 1: having a chat with me this morning.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Thank you, Katie, thank you, thank you so much.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Stay
