- 1:29Speaker 1: Sark that Sark had underperformed this year. I don't think
- 1:33Speaker 1: Sark like that fact. I'm pretty sure he didn't with
- 1:36Speaker 1: his response. We will talk to Kirk tomorrow. We'll talk

- 2:15Speaker 1: kids and put it in your calendar and on your phone,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and make sure you know that this portion of the
- 2:21Speaker 1: program is brought to you by the Dollar Floor Store.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Coming up, I'm going to be visiting with Patrick Ireland
- 2:29Speaker 1: with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. They held a
- 2:33Speaker 1: public forum at Lake Buchanan on Monday evening, probably for
- 2:40Speaker 1: the first time post flood last July on how that
- 2:47Speaker 1: affected the outdoors. We know how it affected lives and
- 2:54Speaker 1: the tragedies involved. And by the way, today and Minard
- 3:02Speaker 1: flooding seven inches of rain, Now, that is an area
- 3:08Speaker 1: that desperately needed rain. They did not need seven inches
- 3:13Speaker 1: at one time. That you know. That's unfortunately how things
- 3:21Speaker 1: work a lot of the time in Texas. From the
- 3:24Speaker 1: looks of things, I'm just praying we get a maybe
- 3:28Speaker 1: a half an inch out of this stuff. Most of
- 3:32Speaker 1: it looks like it's going to be west and north
- 3:35Speaker 1: of US, and I hope that areas from Minard to
- 3:42Speaker 1: Austin and San Antonio don't get seven inches, but do
- 3:46Speaker 1: get some because man, it is dry out there. Game
- 3:55Speaker 1: Wards and I hate this, but I want to do
- 4:02Speaker 1: this story as a reminder, Okay. Game Wardens in northeast
- 4:08Speaker 1: Texas responded after midnight last no not last week, this
- 4:15Speaker 1: past weekend to investigate a hunting accident that claimed the
- 4:21Speaker 1: life of a forty five year old hunter from Grapevine, Texas.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Game Wardens on their Twitter page said, we encourage every
- 4:31Speaker 1: hunter to take safety seriously. Always handle all firearms as
- 4:37Speaker 1: if they are loaded. Keep muzzles pointed in a safe direction.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Take time to unload your firearm before placing or removing
- 4:46Speaker 1: it from a vehicle. We see these types of accidents
- 4:52Speaker 1: every year, unfortunately, and it just it has to serve
- 4:58Speaker 1: as a reminder to be extra careful, extra careful. Don't
- 5:06Speaker 1: ever get to the point where you and you know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I've handled guns most of my life, but you don't
- 5:17Speaker 1: want to get careless and you always always want to
- 5:25Speaker 1: be very careful, and this story is just a reminder
- 5:30Speaker 1: for that. I don't know if you've seen this on
- 5:33Speaker 1: the social media, but it's pretty cool in North Georgia
- 5:38Speaker 1: at old to CoA Farm golf Course, and you're welcome
- 5:42Speaker 1: to look it up Toccoa Old to CoA Farm golf Course.
- 5:50Speaker 1: They were pushed back last Thursday morning Tea Times after
- 5:55Speaker 1: hundreds of bald eagles descended on one of the and
- 6:02Speaker 1: the fair way staff say they temporarily temporarily paused play
- 6:10Speaker 1: out of respect for the national bird. The eagles eventually
- 6:17Speaker 1: lifted off together and cleared play for the golfers to
- 6:24Speaker 1: play through. I'm telling you, if this is a cool
- 6:28Speaker 1: looking thing, I've never seen that many eagles in one place.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I don't know enough about North Georgia to know if
- 6:37Speaker 1: they're migrating through the area or if they winter there nearby.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You know, I went to Alaska in the summertime and
- 6:46Speaker 1: saw a bunch of bald eagles, but not like this,
- 6:49Speaker 1: not hundreds, like you know, a huge flock of geese almost.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I've just never seen this with bald eagles before. Now
- 6:58Speaker 1: around Alaska when they congregate the water and there's fish,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and yeah, they'll be together. But again, that was just
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's awesome. Looked that up on the social media old
- 7:13Speaker 1: to co of farm golf course eagles. Just google that.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And this is classic Austin area news right here. Okay,
- 7:29Speaker 1: stay with me. More than a thousand people have signed
- 7:34Speaker 1: a postition against a proposed plan to coal deer. This
- 7:43Speaker 1: is in the Sun City retirement area and it's huge
- 7:47Speaker 1: in Georgetown, just west of Georgetown's in the Hill Country.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Listen to me. People in countries from Germany, Italy, Finland,
- 8:00Speaker 1: New Zealand, Brazil and Austria have signed this petition. Deer huggers.
- 8:11Speaker 1: They know nothing. The deer huggers know nothing about wildlife
- 8:17Speaker 1: management and about what's healthy for existing deer herds. We've
- 8:23Speaker 1: had this conversation repeatedly over the years. Sun City has
- 8:31Speaker 1: not trapped deer in five years, but it's Wildlife Management
- 8:35Speaker 1: committee proposed culling them. Protesters have said it's cruel. Listen
- 8:42Speaker 1: to me because they've heard deer screaming in nets, use
- 8:48Speaker 1: to catch them, and seen them suffering before they're killed
- 8:53Speaker 1: at a slaughterhouse. Guess what this meat is going to
- 8:56Speaker 1: people that can't afford it, okaying healthier than venison, it's natural,
- 9:04Speaker 1: there's no hormones. It is good for you. I bet
- 9:10Speaker 1: the people who haven't eaten meat in a while aren't
- 9:13Speaker 1: real happy with this petition. The plan is to capture
- 9:18Speaker 1: and kill one hundred and fifty five deer in this area,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and believe me, that won't be a drop in the
- 9:27Speaker 1: bucket for the number of white tailed deer. You people
- 9:31Speaker 1: live here, you understand it. You see if you're if
- 9:33Speaker 1: you're in neighborhoods, on the fringes of the city, or
- 9:37Speaker 1: even in the middle of the city, you see deer
- 9:40Speaker 1: all the time. All the time. They're eating plants out
- 9:46Speaker 1: of your flower beds. If you have a garden, they're
- 9:51Speaker 1: eating stuff out of the garden. A lawsuit filed last
- 9:56Speaker 1: week by plaintiffs named Jane Doe. Yeah, they're not. They
- 10:01Speaker 1: won't even put their name up there against the Sun City,
- 10:05Speaker 1: Texas Community Association and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
- 10:11Speaker 1: The Community of Association is meeting today to decide whether
- 10:16Speaker 1: to approve the plan. One lady said she was shocked
- 10:22Speaker 1: when she heard about it. She says the animals aren't
- 10:27Speaker 1: causing a problem. If I had known about the trapping,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I never would have bought a home here. Hey, lady,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I think you should sell your home and move to
- 10:38Speaker 1: California because around here we shoot deer, and we eat deer,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and we are concerned about the deer population, especially when
- 10:50Speaker 1: it gets too high. If you think it's cruel that
- 10:54Speaker 1: they're netting them and killing them humanely, wait till you
- 10:58Speaker 1: watch them starve today because there's too many of them
- 11:01Speaker 1: in your neighborhood. Because people like you are signing silly
- 11:05Speaker 1: petitions to keep from culling the deer herd, You idiots.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Communities in Texas that want to trap deer are required
- 11:15Speaker 1: to get a permit from Parks and wild Life. The
- 11:17Speaker 1: Trap Transport Process permit is a mechanism to help reduce
- 11:23Speaker 1: deer population in densities. In areas where whitetail deer are
- 11:29Speaker 1: over populated, Parks and Wildlife says, through use of this permit,
- 11:37Speaker 1: areas with surplus whitetail deer can capture them, process the carcasses,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and donate the resulting venison to penal facilities or charitable
- 11:48Speaker 1: organizations for consumption. Sun City resident Barbara Meisner says she
- 11:55Speaker 1: understands that some residents may have concerns about deer ea
- 12:00Speaker 1: eating their flowers, but there are plants that are deer resistant.
- 12:05Speaker 1: So let's not call the deer. Let's not understand that
- 12:11Speaker 1: there are too many of them, she says. They also
- 12:16Speaker 1: have to learn not to feed them. You think there
- 12:22Speaker 1: were protests in Lakeway, which of course is just west
- 12:25Speaker 1: of Austin, that stopped the trapping of deer. Oh good gosh.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Deborah Stewart held a protest last week. People love to
- 12:42Speaker 1: look at deer when fawns are born here, it's so
- 12:46Speaker 1: precious to see moms and babies. Deborah. Have you seen
- 12:51Speaker 1: fawns barely born and undernourished because the mom was undernourished
- 12:57Speaker 1: because there's too many deer? Have you seen that, Deborah?
- 13:00Speaker 1: Now and do you think that trapping one hundred and
- 13:04Speaker 1: fifty five deer is going to prevent you from watching
- 13:09Speaker 1: these cute little animals. No, she says, no, one needs
- 13:15Speaker 1: to trap them deer. A lot of fawns get gobbled
- 13:18Speaker 1: by coyotes, foxes and bobcats and bucks get killed on
- 13:23Speaker 1: the road. That kind of stuff reduces the population. Not enough, Deborah,
- 13:31Speaker 1: not enough. There's too many of them because you deer
- 13:35Speaker 1: huggers aren't letting them control the population the way it
- 13:40Speaker 1: needs to be controlled. Look, I know we have deer
- 13:45Speaker 1: huggers here. They're not just in Austin. I get it.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But there's too many, and I guarantee there's too many
- 13:54Speaker 1: roaming around some of these neighborhoods that you and I
- 13:56Speaker 1: can both name. They're everywhere. Fortunately, we had some rain
- 14:04Speaker 1: in the spring and in the summer before this bigot
- 14:06Speaker 1: got turned off. That's a good time for deer. That
- 14:11Speaker 1: means there were more fawns born in the spring and
- 14:16Speaker 1: summer as a result of the rain that we had.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Now there's too many. We need to take them out. Hey, Deborah,
- 14:27Speaker 1: you can join me in the deer stead Saturday morning
- 14:31Speaker 1: if you want to and see how we control deer
- 14:35Speaker 1: around here. Idiots. When I say get them before they
- 14:43Speaker 1: get you now, I'm talking about the deer huggers. At
- 14:50Speaker 1: least tell them how stupid they are. An eleven year
- 14:55Speaker 1: old Pennsylvania boy is sharing one of the most frightening
- 14:58Speaker 1: experiences he had in his young life. In Pennsylvania, he
- 15:04Speaker 1: spotted a bear outside a store and it started chasing him. Cold,
- 15:09Speaker 1: frazy and his dad stopped to grab a few things
- 15:12Speaker 1: at the old Family Dollar in Marklesburg, Pennsylvania. The boy
- 15:17Speaker 1: went outside to see what was taking his dad so long,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and that's when he saw a black bear looking right
- 15:23Speaker 1: at him. He thought the bear was going to turn around. Instead,
- 15:26Speaker 1: it started chasing him. When it runs after me, I
- 15:29Speaker 1: turn around and running the store. I'm screaming and stuff.
- 15:35Speaker 1: The thing was a foot and a half away from me.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I took a left, the bear went straight. Eleven year
- 15:41Speaker 1: old boy said his heart was pounding as he raced
- 15:43Speaker 1: up and down the aisles trying to escape. He said,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm probably gonna get eaten by a bear. The only
- 15:51Speaker 1: other person inside the store was the cashier, so Cole
- 15:54Speaker 1: ran to her for help. She grabbed him. They jumped
- 15:57Speaker 1: on top of the counter for a better view. The
- 16:00Speaker 1: moment the bear turned and walked toward the back of
- 16:03Speaker 1: the store, they saw their only chance. She grabbed her coat,
- 16:06Speaker 1: the keys, the phone. We ran out of there. When
- 16:09Speaker 1: we ran out of there, we all got in the car.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Seconds later, the bear returned to the front of the store,
- 16:15Speaker 1: where surveillance video capture it leaping over the counter just
- 16:19Speaker 1: where they had been. The bear stayed in the store
- 16:24Speaker 1: for about ten minutes, wandering around before finally finding its
- 16:29Speaker 1: way out. Sitting outside in lock car, Cole says he
- 16:33Speaker 1: finally felt safe. I was relieved. It was definitely a
- 16:36Speaker 1: crazy experience. Kind of started Monday at school. Cole says
- 16:42Speaker 1: when his friends found out what happened, they couldn't believe it.
- 16:45Speaker 1: He'll be known as the boy who out ran the bear.
- 16:51Speaker 1: That's like one in a million, right there, Cole said.
- 16:54Speaker 1: The Pennsylvania Game Commission says bears are actively searching for
- 17:00Speaker 1: food this time of year, and that leads to sometimes
- 17:04Speaker 1: dangerous and unexpected encounters. Speaking of which, we have talked
- 17:13Speaker 1: about this now for several months and it's still happening.
- 17:18Speaker 1: We have told you there have been two hundred and
- 17:21Speaker 1: twenty people attacked by bears since April in Japan the
- 17:28Speaker 1: picturesque Japanese mountain village of Shirakawa, but since Cheroke Mitsunari
- 17:40Speaker 1: was attacked a cub attacked a Spanish visitor in the
- 17:46Speaker 1: village last month. Protecting residents and the throngs of tourists
- 17:52Speaker 1: who flocked to his hometown has been a top priority.
- 17:58Speaker 1: A local official, Mutsunari overseeing efforts to deter bears in
- 18:03Speaker 1: the village, a remote valley in central Japan. There have
- 18:09Speaker 1: been a lot of bears coming, he says. He says
- 18:13Speaker 1: the surge is due to a growing bear population and
- 18:18Speaker 1: shortage of natural food sources. While the tourists escaped with
- 18:24Speaker 1: minor injuries, authorities have since captured six bears with honeylace traps. Oh,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the people in Georgetown wouldn't like trapping those bears. It's cruel,
- 18:38Speaker 1: It's in humane. After all, what of the bears ever done?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Oh no, wait, they're eating people. I promise that wouldn't
- 18:48Speaker 1: deter the deer huggers. Bear sightings have topped over one
- 18:55Speaker 1: hundred compared to thirty five last year. Thirty people have
- 19:01Speaker 1: died seven last month. Seven, the US, China, Britain, issued
- 19:12Speaker 1: travel advisories about the dangers of bear attacks in Japan.
- 19:18Speaker 1: The US alert warned about attacks near populated zones, noting
- 19:22Speaker 1: that a park next to its consulate in the city
- 19:26Speaker 1: of Sapporo was closed for two weeks following a bear siding.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Authorities have chopped down fruit trees that might draw the
- 19:37Speaker 1: bears and issued warnings to visitors to walk in groups
- 19:42Speaker 1: where bear bells and avoid certain areas. Cornelia Lee, twenty
- 19:49Speaker 1: five year old worker from Shanghai, said, when we were
- 19:52Speaker 1: preparing for this trip, we saw on social media there
- 19:55Speaker 1: were a lot of Japanese news reports of bear sidings.
- 19:59Speaker 1: We were a little worried. She affixed a bare bell
- 20:03Speaker 1: to her four year old daughter's backpack. The family opted
- 20:07Speaker 1: to book hotels in cities rather than rural areas due
- 20:12Speaker 1: to the risk. The good news about this is people,
- 20:17Speaker 1: the people in Japan are doing something about it. Unlike
- 20:20Speaker 1: the people of Georgetown, who want the whitetail deer to
- 20:24Speaker 1: continue to populate so much that they attack and eat you.
- 20:30Speaker 1: They're going to kill the bears in this area right
- 20:34Speaker 1: because they want tourists there, they want commerce there. They're
- 20:39Speaker 1: not saying, oh, you people should move out This is
- 20:43Speaker 1: a bear's home. Our bear coverage and our animal attack
- 20:50Speaker 1: segment is brought to you each week by Shulti Roofing,
- 20:54Speaker 1: Home of the Bulletproof Roof Guarantee.
- 20:58Speaker 6: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 21:00Speaker 6: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 21:02Speaker 6: I found Shorlty Roofing in Point.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I'm glad I did.
- 21:05Speaker 6: The folks at Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 21:08Speaker 6: They showed me my options, They told me what my
- 21:10Speaker 6: out of pocket cost would be after insurance. They took
- 21:13Speaker 6: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 21:16Speaker 6: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,
- 21:19Speaker 6: did all the clean up, and I had my new
- 21:20Speaker 6: roof in one.
- 21:21Speaker 7: Day, the whole by the moon roof.
- 21:30Speaker 1: You know your children and grandchildren are being taught this
- 21:33Speaker 1: kind of crap in schools right, that hunters are evil.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Hunting is evil. Trapping is evil because it stresses the
- 21:44Speaker 1: deer out. Killing deer is evil. You know this is
- 21:51Speaker 1: what they're being taught, right. You know that the the
- 21:56Speaker 1: hunters in the in the country and in Texas are
- 22:00Speaker 1: aging out. People like me who grew up hunting, who
- 22:04Speaker 1: grew up with the notion that hey, let's get into
- 22:07Speaker 1: the woods, let's get into nature, let's kill a deer
- 22:13Speaker 1: if we can, and then we will eat that deer,
- 22:17Speaker 1: because that's the way God intended it to be. Not today,
- 22:23Speaker 1: kids aren't hunting. There's not as much open space for sure,
- 22:27Speaker 1: more cities. They'd rather sit in front of their video screens,
- 22:32Speaker 1: as Hank Hill would say, and not get outside. So
- 22:40Speaker 1: most kids today don't grow up like that, right. Unfortunately,
- 22:47Speaker 1: there's also socioeconomic dynamics. It worked, there's no question about that.
- 22:53Speaker 1: But hunters are aging out. These deer huggers in Georgetown, well,
- 23:03Speaker 1: if they live at Sun City, they're not going to
- 23:05Speaker 1: be alive very much longer. But there'll be others behind them.
- 23:10Speaker 1: They'll be overrun by deer. There'll be knocking on their
- 23:14Speaker 1: front door asking for hey, I've eaten all your flowers.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Do you have any more flowers here? So anyway, take
- 23:27Speaker 1: a kid hunting, please, get them outside. Please. They'll be
- 23:35Speaker 1: better for it. They'll be better people for it, I
- 23:39Speaker 1: promise you. You know, there's some serious issues regarding dog
- 23:51Speaker 1: attacks in the US. Deaths have increased for the fourth
- 23:58Speaker 1: year in a row pit bulls especially have killed fifty
- 24:03Speaker 1: four people. There was a death of two Georgia people
- 24:11Speaker 1: in the last two weeks fifty four. The US record
- 24:16Speaker 1: is seventy five. That was last year. The record for
- 24:20Speaker 1: pitbull attacks fifty nine. They are getting loose and mauling
- 24:29Speaker 1: people and children. There are all kinds of stories all
- 24:35Speaker 1: over about ongoing dog attacks and all over. I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 1: you know it's it's not regional. It's an issue. I mean,
- 24:49Speaker 1: if you watch the news, especially in Houston, you see
- 24:52Speaker 1: this on a regular basis as not necessarily pit bulls,
- 24:55Speaker 1: but pitbulls again are involved in the majority of attacks.
- 25:01Speaker 1: It's a species that's been trained to fight. Unfortunately, there
- 25:05Speaker 1: are some very nice pitfulls. Okay, not saying that, but
- 25:11Speaker 1: especially some of these if they've been rescued from places
- 25:15Speaker 1: like that, just have to be very careful about that.
- 25:20Speaker 1: All right, We're going to take a break. I want
- 25:23Speaker 1: you to contact my friend John at Lucko Ranch Pond
- 25:27Speaker 1: and Lake Management. If you have property that has a
- 25:31Speaker 1: pond or a lake and you want it to be
- 25:34Speaker 1: more productive for your kids and grandkids to have a
- 25:37Speaker 1: place to fish, contact Loco Ranch. They do this every day.
- 25:42Speaker 1: They manage ponds they build ponds in lakes. If you
- 25:46Speaker 1: have property and you want to put a lake on
- 25:49Speaker 1: your property and you want it to be productive and
- 25:52Speaker 1: you want it to look good, call the people at
- 25:55Speaker 1: Lucko Ranch. If you have existing places you don't know why,
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's always buddy, you can't get rid of the vegetation
- 26:03Speaker 1: which has choked everything out. They will come out. They
- 26:07Speaker 1: will do an electro fishing survey and say, hey, the
- 26:11Speaker 1: reason you're not catching any fish is because you don't
- 26:13Speaker 1: have any fish in this pond. That could be a problem.

- 33:26Speaker 1: looking at all the different lakes and reservoirs and rivers in.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Your jurisdiction you got a lot.
- 33:31Speaker 14: Of, cover oh that's. Absolutely correct inland fisheries were, SIXTEEN
- 33:36Speaker 14: counties i think fourteen, major reservoirs All These central, TEXAS
- 33:39Speaker 14: reservoirs i, mean rivers and even all these over one
- 33:42Speaker 14: hundred plus urban ponds that we try to manage the best.
- 33:46Speaker 1: YOU can i know you guys had a public Hearing
- 33:49Speaker 1: at Lake The cannon. MONDAY evening i was just interested
- 33:54Speaker 1: in kind of the feedback that you received and some
- 33:56Speaker 1: of the questions that.
- 33:57Speaker 14: You, received well, in general it was so, you know
- 34:01Speaker 14: we have the big reigin Event. In, july yeah, you
- 34:03Speaker 14: know it made all the national news and even In
- 34:05Speaker 14: The colorado river basin which is West of austin.
- 34:07Speaker 13: Got.
- 34:08Speaker 14: Impacted uh in, some ways it was actually positive our
- 34:11Speaker 14: big Reservoirs Like lake Travis and Lake, the cannon which
- 34:13Speaker 14: had been almost near historical low as state. Came up
- 34:16Speaker 14: so that was, you know a net positive from a.
- 34:18Speaker 14: Fishery standpoint but you know a lot of for Rivers,
- 34:19Speaker 14: to Lando, the Colorado. The, pedernews uh those slash floods
- 34:23Speaker 14: ripped through there and, you know destroy a lot. Of
- 34:25Speaker 14: habitat so we were there just, to basically, you know
- 34:28Speaker 14: we get a lot of calls about what are we
- 34:29Speaker 14: doing for the fishery and the ecology and. All that
- 34:31Speaker 14: so it was basically away for us to educate the
- 34:34Speaker 14: public kind of what takes parks, wal life what we've,
- 34:36Speaker 14: been doing our role in. All that so a lot
- 34:39Speaker 14: of the questions were we're actually, reservoir based not so much,
- 34:42Speaker 14: riverine based about, you know when are we going to
- 34:44Speaker 14: stock fish house the habitat going to improve or decrease from. The,
- 34:48Speaker 14: floods yeah basically stuff, like that how, you know wanting
- 34:53Speaker 14: more specific son. Our involvement so that was kind of
- 34:55Speaker 14: it was just more OF a Q and a with.
- 34:56Speaker 1: The public you mentioned that you mentioned the reserv BOYS
- 35:00Speaker 1: and I and i know how down that that they
- 35:03Speaker 1: were in the hill country and and. Those lakes what's
- 35:07Speaker 1: the status of most of them, right now you know
- 35:10Speaker 1: of several months after this. Flood, event well if.
- 35:13Speaker 14: You Take The, highland lake which, you know if you
- 35:15Speaker 14: start In, downtown austin you Start With lady bird and you,
- 35:18Speaker 14: go upstream You Got, Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Marble, FALLS,
- 35:20Speaker 14: inks Lbj. The cannon some of those are stable water
- 35:26Speaker 14: level lakes of THE L, C, a keiths those that,
- 35:28Speaker 14: constant level But bu Cannon, and travis those two were.
- 35:31Speaker 14: DOWN majorly I Think lake travis we were down almost
- 35:33Speaker 14: fifty feet for. A While lake buchan was over twenty.
- 35:36Speaker 14: Five feet so if you compare that to, you know
- 35:38Speaker 14: some of the Reservoirs Around college stationary that, you know
- 35:41Speaker 14: that's unamaginable to see that kind. Of, start, Yeah decreased,
- 35:45Speaker 14: uh no they came up the cannons at one hundred,
- 35:47Speaker 14: percent capacity. That's, Great Uh lake travis is it was
- 35:50Speaker 14: almost up one. Hundred percent it's around ninety percent or eighty,
- 35:54Speaker 14: five percent, but no it really did. Come up so
- 35:57Speaker 14: that does wonder for the fishery from a, new habitat and,
- 36:01Speaker 14: you know we should be getting some pretty, good uh
- 36:04Speaker 14: population growth in our.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Sport fish so when that water, comes, up especially it
- 36:08Speaker 1: gives fish obviously, more area but it also improves the,
- 36:12Speaker 1: spawning capabilities does? IT not.
- 36:17Speaker 14: I would say the major thing that we had after
- 36:19Speaker 14: a multi, year drought which we're still in, a, drought,
- 36:22Speaker 14: yes yes but we were in this area there's a
- 36:25Speaker 14: lot of, terrestrial vegetation, you know grasses, and shrubs, willow
- 36:29Speaker 14: trees you know whatnot that grow up into those dry
- 36:31Speaker 14: it was now exposed. Lake beds so once that gets
- 36:34Speaker 14: once the water level, comes up that's. All inundated and that's,
- 36:37Speaker 14: you know it's, called cover right anybody fishes know. It's
- 36:39Speaker 14: cover and that provides basically the protective areas for, young
- 36:43Speaker 14: fish for the ford species, you know, the sunfish, the
- 36:46Speaker 14: shad the minnows. All that so it basically just drives
- 36:48Speaker 14: the whole food web up uh, for, frive fiding cover
- 36:51Speaker 14: and for, you know protection and for uh.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Food sources how would you describe the health of the
- 36:57Speaker 1: fisheries In the highland lakes? Right Now, PAT oh i.
- 37:01Speaker 14: THINK they're i think they're they're always they're. Very resilient,
- 37:05Speaker 14: RIGHT now i think they're. Doing great YOU know lbj
- 37:08Speaker 14: is one of our, you know top. Bat lakes we
- 37:09Speaker 14: have pretty good bass tournament results from.
- 37:11Speaker 13: That.
- 37:11Speaker 14: Lake uh, of course not everybody's. Always happy that's that's the. Nature's.
- 37:16Speaker 14: BUSINESS uh I Think, LAKE travis i think it was
- 37:19Speaker 14: it's going to be a. Huge BOON so i think
- 37:21Speaker 14: of the, next year we're going to see some really
- 37:23Speaker 14: good year classes of largemouth bath meaning new new young
- 37:26Speaker 14: growing up into. Adult Classes, Lake cannon i'm moving up
- 37:29Speaker 14: to our upper lake up there now that it's at
- 37:31Speaker 14: twenty two thousand acres at. Fool capacity that's our kind
- 37:34Speaker 14: of our our. Stripe, dass yeah you know we stock
- 37:37Speaker 14: that there are so much shad in, that lake and,
- 37:40Speaker 14: you know gizard chad is the primary. Food source it's
- 37:42Speaker 14: a small fish that or, you know gets bigger and
- 37:44Speaker 14: they school and there's we had some of the highest
- 37:46Speaker 14: catch rates we've ever had out there during our, LESS
- 37:48Speaker 14: survey i think we're catching five hundred shad.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Per hour we good gosh that to.
- 37:52Speaker 14: Put, that perspective some likes we only. Get twenty so
- 37:55Speaker 14: there's so much food out THERE that i think that
- 37:57Speaker 14: we're going to have some really good growth rates on
- 38:00Speaker 14: our striped bass and we're going to continue to take
- 38:02Speaker 14: first of all life in partnership With The Late Buchanan.
- 38:04Speaker 14: Conservation corps that's our partner group that helps. Us stock
- 38:07Speaker 14: we stalk, striped bass they stalk, sunshine bass which is
- 38:10Speaker 14: a hybrid stripe gas, in combination and we're going to
- 38:13Speaker 14: be putting a lot of fish in there this spring
- 38:15Speaker 14: to keep that. Fishery GOING so i.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Haven't heard of the sunshine. Bass name is that just
- 38:21Speaker 1: the stripe the hybrid that we're used to or is
- 38:24Speaker 1: it a.
- 38:24Speaker 14: Little, Different yeah now it's a normal hybrid. Stripe bas
- 38:28Speaker 14: there's The palmet the two ones that are known Are
- 38:30Speaker 14: the Palmettos hybrid. Sunshine hybrid this would be a male
- 38:34Speaker 14: stripe bass that's crossed with a female. White, bass okay
- 38:38Speaker 14: and so they, you know they're basically they they can
- 38:41Speaker 14: handle our summer heat a little bit Better, than okay. Stripe,
- 38:45Speaker 14: bass okay they fight, like crazy they, get good they're,
- 38:48Speaker 14: good eating just a. Great.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Sport fish can can stripers Spawn and buchanan, or no
- 38:56Speaker 1: that's a million.
- 38:56Speaker 14: DOLLAR question i would not. Be Surprised, All right so
- 39:00Speaker 14: they do Spawn In Lake, techsomo.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Okay, sure, yeah yeah.
- 39:05Speaker 14: They probably if conditions are just perfect where you Get
- 39:09Speaker 14: The colorado river flowing really good and they can move
- 39:12Speaker 14: fifty miles upstream on a really, good year which we.
- 39:14Speaker 14: HAVEN'T had i would not be surprised if that. Hasn't
- 39:17Speaker 14: happened now it's not consistent enough to ever support. The
- 39:20Speaker 14: population we have to supplement. A, stock okay the answer,
- 39:23Speaker 14: functionally yes but, you know, practically.
- 39:26Speaker 1: No are those fish grown At In san marcos or.
- 39:29Speaker 14: Somewhere else we do grow them here sometimes at, the
- 39:32Speaker 14: hatchery and That's actually i'm Not The Awood. FISH hattery
- 39:35Speaker 14: i don't work for the, hatery itself but we do
- 39:36Speaker 14: sometimes grow. THEM here i think most often they come
- 39:40Speaker 14: FROM The Pk Possum, kingdom hatchery which Is.
- 39:43Speaker 1: North okay how often do you?
- 39:44Speaker 14: Stock well that depends on which lake you're, talking about
- 39:49Speaker 14: and do we have a strategic need to stalk on
- 39:52Speaker 14: lake buchanans for the. Stripe baths we're. Stocking annually sometimes
- 39:55Speaker 14: if we have surplus and we feel that the lake
- 39:57Speaker 14: is at a, good condition we will. Double. Stock uh,
- 40:01Speaker 14: you KNOW and I think i would wouldn't mind doing
- 40:02Speaker 14: that this year with a strip bass now that we
- 40:05Speaker 14: have so much more habitat for them to, you know
- 40:07Speaker 14: be in. Some lake, you know we, may not, you
- 40:10Speaker 14: know certainly if there's not really a functional Need Like, marble,
- 40:13Speaker 14: falls yes which is not really a, great fishery it's
- 40:15Speaker 14: because it's riverine and it's. Poor habitat we may every
- 40:19Speaker 14: few years just supplement it with Uh lone, star bass
- 40:21Speaker 14: which is our share. Lunker offspring we have some just
- 40:24Speaker 14: put those under the genetics. To it but it's it's
- 40:27Speaker 14: not a case by, case basis and we, you know
- 40:29Speaker 14: it's based on our. Reporting factle we write reports on
- 40:31Speaker 14: each of, these reservots and we have a management strategy for.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Each, Lake okay i'm interested in how these these devastating
- 40:38Speaker 1: floods affected the fisheries of the, rivers nearby so.
- 40:45Speaker 14: Short answers these rivers are actually used. TO this, i
- 40:47Speaker 14: mean these fits are.
- 40:48Speaker 4: Very.
- 40:48Speaker 14: Resilient uh we have A Whole river studies group that
- 40:53Speaker 14: you know that presented us at our Meeting. ON monday
- 40:56Speaker 14: i Kind of i'll summarize kind of what. They said
- 40:59Speaker 14: they've done previous research On The lando river, twenty eighteen
- 41:02Speaker 14: there were some rip roaring floods that roared, through there
- 41:04Speaker 14: so they did some studies on the waterloope bath population
- 41:07Speaker 14: in THAT and i believe what they, found, is hey
- 41:11Speaker 14: a lot of. These fish, you know some do get,
- 41:12Speaker 14: swept away but a lot of these fish are able
- 41:14Speaker 14: to hunker down and stay put even through, a flood
- 41:16Speaker 14: which is amazing when you see you know that through
- 41:19Speaker 14: they they can. Stay, put now some do, get lost
- 41:22Speaker 14: but what they find is when, conditions normalize they are
- 41:25Speaker 14: very resilient and they're, you know usually the next spring following,
- 41:28Speaker 14: a flood you get an enormous, spawning. Event, right yeah
- 41:32Speaker 14: you also have enormous survival of those young fish because
- 41:35Speaker 14: there's not so much competition anymore and some of the
- 41:37Speaker 14: older fish are gone that would normally eat those. Younger.
- 41:39Speaker 14: Fish right so there seems to be a pretty good
- 41:42Speaker 14: rubber band rebound effect after. These floods and to elaborate,
- 41:46Speaker 14: on that a lot of times, people go we need to,
- 41:47Speaker 14: you know parts of wall life needs to come in
- 41:49Speaker 14: and stock. This river after. A flood well, you, know really,
- 41:51Speaker 14: you know we're finding unless there's, you know, you know something,
- 41:54Speaker 14: real catastrophic a flood typically does not require us to
- 41:57Speaker 14: go out there and. Do that within a year, or
- 41:58Speaker 14: two these these rivers will be right back to how.
- 42:00Speaker 1: They, Were YEAH i'm i don't want to minimize what
- 42:04Speaker 1: happened or the tragedy of. What happened but but in the,
- 42:07Speaker 1: long run in terms, of fisheries a normal quote flood
- 42:12Speaker 1: is can be good long term for That river kenon Not.
- 42:19Speaker 14: Like i'm. With you you fortunately in, my district which
- 42:21Speaker 14: Is The, Colorado, RIVER yeah i don't think we didn't
- 42:24Speaker 14: have quite the human devastation. Up here and so, you
- 42:28Speaker 14: know in the case of, you know the high rain
- 42:30Speaker 14: of it that leads to high, water flooding it actually
- 42:32Speaker 14: puts a lot of woody debris into. The system, you know.
- 42:34Speaker 14: That's covered you're altering, the habitat but often for, the better.
- 42:38Speaker 1: You, Know, yeah, yeah uh are are the are the
- 42:42Speaker 1: rivers in terms of fishing In The hill? Country area
- 42:46Speaker 1: are they underutilized?
- 42:48Speaker 14: Or, not well million dollar QUESTION to i think they're
- 42:54Speaker 14: they're utilized. BY crazy i don't think, they're overutilized but
- 42:57Speaker 14: they get a lot, of attention particularly with the the
- 43:00Speaker 14: the growing fly fishing community and the population growth in.
- 43:03Speaker 14: This area so we've done some river creels On The
- 43:05Speaker 14: guadalupe river Downstream Of. Canyon lake we're about to do
- 43:08Speaker 14: one this year On Our okay trout. Fishery there we
- 43:11Speaker 14: did One In round rock a few years Ago On
- 43:13Speaker 14: brushy creek which is its basically a river that Goes
- 43:15Speaker 14: To round rock and did a creol. Survey there that's
- 43:17Speaker 14: where we go on. Interview anglers that's what a. Creole,
- 43:19Speaker 14: Is yes and we've done one On The colorado river
- 43:21Speaker 14: and we find that there's a lot of people utilizing.
- 43:23Speaker 14: This resource and it's BECAUSE there's, i mean there's a
- 43:26Speaker 14: lot to catch, out there a lot. Of diversity you
- 43:28Speaker 14: have people fly Fishing For rio Grand, thick ledge you
- 43:30Speaker 14: have people Targeting solely. Gualupe baths large mouth bass is
- 43:34Speaker 14: obviously the number one target for fish, for people but
- 43:36Speaker 14: you see there's a lot of opportunities, out here and
- 43:39Speaker 14: that's what it's.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Pretty NEAT and i know this asn't, your Area but
- 43:43Speaker 1: i've read enough DO the a lot of these stocked
- 43:48Speaker 1: trout in that watershed areas survive year. To.
- 43:53Speaker 14: Year, surprisingly, yes yeah it. Depends though, you know oddly
- 44:00Speaker 14: enough we've had so you're speaking Of The Canyon tail
- 44:03Speaker 14: race With The guadaloupe river Downstream. OF lake i guess
- 44:07Speaker 14: for your listeners that lake discharges cold water from the
- 44:10Speaker 14: bottom of, The reservoir so without the first seven, eight
- 44:12Speaker 14: miles it's a cold temperatures and it's cold enough even
- 44:15Speaker 14: through the summer that, rainbow trout which are cold, water
- 44:18Speaker 14: species can live. Year round what we found is during these,
- 44:21Speaker 14: drought years we haven't had big pulses go through that
- 44:24Speaker 14: part Of The guadalupe river is The Upper guadaloupe river
- 44:27Speaker 14: that really got hit, very hard but the lower part was,
- 44:31Speaker 14: relatively Unaffected From canyon Lake To. New bronxels so in,
- 44:34Speaker 14: recent years those fish we're finding our persisting year. Over
- 44:38Speaker 14: Year The guaalupe river trout UNLIMITED g r t. U
- 44:41Speaker 14: s they hold they hold a there's a holdover tournament. Every,
- 44:45Speaker 14: year yes that just a few, weeks ago maybe, last,
- 44:47Speaker 14: WEEK man.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I saw pictures of some. Huge, trout, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 14: Those are those are what you call, the holdovers and that's.
- 44:55Speaker 14: Pretty neat that's those fish.
- 44:57Speaker 13: You.
- 44:57Speaker 14: Know now now, that said we have have to still supplement. Stock, out,
- 45:02Speaker 14: sure yeah you're you will.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Be stocking you will be stocking all over the state
- 45:08Speaker 1: for rainbow. TROUT here i guess Beginning in december is
- 45:11Speaker 1: that when it.
- 45:12Speaker 14: Generally, STARTS absolutely i believe the Weekend of december fifth
- 45:16Speaker 14: is when we really kick off state wide or right
- 45:18Speaker 14: there may be a few stockings Right. Around thanksgiving it's on.
- 45:20Speaker 14: Our website if you people google keepwd, up stocking they'll
- 45:24Speaker 14: be able to find a. Little schedule but THERE'S a
- 45:26Speaker 14: i mean that rainbow trout is one of our more. Popular,
- 45:29Speaker 14: fisheries uh it's because it's so unique, and yea it
- 45:31Speaker 14: brings kids out and seemly It's a how would.
- 45:35Speaker 1: You describe the overall health Of The guadalupe bass? Right, now.
- 45:40Speaker 14: Well as, a whole it's going to be basin. By
- 45:43Speaker 14: basin we haven't Actually A christon bean Is our guadalupe,
- 45:47Speaker 14: bas biologist so he could answer that. MORE specifically i
- 45:49Speaker 14: could tell you in some of my Watersheds Like rushy
- 45:52Speaker 14: Creek and rock we Have, rake guanalupe we Have pure.
- 45:55Speaker 14: Guadaloupe bass it's one of the few, you know relations
- 45:57Speaker 14: that's basically not diluted by. Mallmouth genetics so we have
- 46:01Speaker 14: a few of those those areas where we have pure. Guailupe,
- 46:04Speaker 14: bass oh another One The colorado river Downstream, from austin
- 46:07Speaker 14: there's a stretch there that Has pure. Guaalupe bass really
- 46:10Speaker 14: that's where the state records. Come from our State. Record
- 46:12Speaker 14: guadalupe that is that.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Like between austin and bass drop, you're talking.
- 46:17Speaker 14: That's exactly the area if you want to go catch
- 46:19Speaker 14: a potential World record, guaialupe bass that's where it.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Will come, No kidding why is that? IN particular.
- 46:28Speaker 14: I don't know what the secret. Soft is we apothesize
- 46:31Speaker 14: that it's possibly because There's The colorado river has a
- 46:33Speaker 14: lot of nutrients and a lot, of, forage sure and
- 46:36Speaker 14: so it's it's meeting that sweet spot to grow. These
- 46:39Speaker 14: fish there's a lot to Eat. Upper, yeah yeah.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Let's talk a little BIT before i let you go
- 46:46Speaker 1: about the. INVASIVE species i know that was part of
- 46:49Speaker 1: the presentation the. Other night what what can you tell
- 46:52Speaker 1: us on on where we are with some of these.
- 46:55Speaker 15: Invasive, species well during, the talk the one big one
- 46:58Speaker 15: that always brings up is the zebra muscle and we uh,
- 47:02Speaker 15: AND unfortunately i, you know it's it may be unsolvable at.
- 47:06Speaker 14: This point, you know we are the controlling authorities like
- 47:09Speaker 14: the l G, r A the City. Of boston they, monitor,
- 47:11Speaker 14: it right, you know the populations boom, and bust, you
- 47:16Speaker 14: know we see that Even On lake Travis and buchanan
- 47:18Speaker 14: AND even lbj where, you know some years we look
- 47:20Speaker 14: at the data and the numbers are the. Sky high
- 47:22Speaker 14: but then you have a really hot summer and zebra
- 47:24Speaker 14: muscles don't like, hot water and then they die off
- 47:27Speaker 14: and we have a cool spring they'll come. Back up
- 47:28Speaker 14: so it's a boom.
- 47:29Speaker 16: And.
- 47:29Speaker 14: Bus, uh well we have found though the zebra muscles
- 47:32Speaker 14: when they first, showed up probably around, twenty seventeen we're
- 47:34Speaker 14: thinking it's going to destroy, the fisheries and we have
- 47:36Speaker 14: seen no evidence of. That yet there doesn't seem to
- 47:40Speaker 14: be it doesn't seem to be having the negative effect
- 47:42Speaker 14: that we see.
- 47:42Speaker 13: Up.
- 47:43Speaker 14: North uh and on the, plus side we're also starting
- 47:45Speaker 14: to get more And more world Red or state water
- 47:48Speaker 14: body records. Readier. Sunfish, yeah really they're they're eating those things.
- 47:52Speaker 14: Like crazy Really starting we're starting to get some stuff
- 47:55Speaker 14: submitted a, really big readier sunfish Like On. Canyon lake, and.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah some of these. OTHER faces, i mean that's not a,
- 48:01Speaker 1: bad thing.
- 48:01Speaker 17: Is?
- 48:01Speaker 14: It, no, no no and and and BLUE. CATFISH levelm
- 48:05Speaker 14: i think we're starting to see, you know, you, know
- 48:07Speaker 14: yep it's, you know but low. Hanging, fruit ye, bibra
- 48:10Speaker 14: muscles it's. Not there they prefer to. Eat, shad yeah,
- 48:13Speaker 14: you know blue zebra muscles all day long if.
- 48:16Speaker 1: IT'S available I saw i think It was Parks AND
- 48:20Speaker 1: wildlife tv show On The San. Marcos river there's an
- 48:23Speaker 1: invasive species that's kind of like the equivalent of the
- 48:27Speaker 1: lion fish. In, saltwater uh could you help?
- 48:31Speaker 18: Me?
- 48:31Speaker 14: Out, yeah yeah you know that's a, You know i'm
- 48:36Speaker 14: station right here On The san. MARCOS rivery i could
- 48:38Speaker 14: walk down there right now and go see. A, few
- 48:40Speaker 14: yeah because it's a. They there they would die during,
- 48:43Speaker 14: cold water but because that spring, fed river they can
- 48:47Speaker 14: handle it. All year and they're. Not good they destroyed,
- 48:51Speaker 14: the bank they undercut the bank and. All that we're,
- 48:53Speaker 14: not involved or At least i'm not with any type of.
- 48:55Speaker 14: CONTROL measures i believe there's a PROFESSOR at A and
- 48:57Speaker 14: m who had a project working on THAT and i
- 48:59Speaker 14: think they're some contractors who go out there and spere
- 49:01Speaker 14: those fish. At, Night, correct, yes yes which actually sounds
- 49:05Speaker 14: kind of interesting thing.
- 49:06Speaker 1: To, do well it does. Sound INTERESTING and i know
- 49:09Speaker 1: they had a big fish fry as, a result because
- 49:11Speaker 1: apparently they they're. Pretty, TASTY oh i.
- 49:14Speaker 14: DON'T know i know they spear tilapia, out there and
- 49:17Speaker 14: that WASN'T til i.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Know that tilapi, are tasty, but, Apparently.
- 49:23Speaker 14: Yeah San marcus river tilapi are. PRETTY good i, don't,
- 49:26Speaker 14: KNOW man i would like to try a lecho.
