- 0:00Speaker 1: The hills are alive with the sound of Moto GP
- 0:03Speaker 1: this weekend as the championship heads to the Red Bull
- 0:06Speaker 1: Ring for the Austrian Gram Prix. Fresh from his back
- 0:10Speaker 1: to back wins and Ambashanini has now secured himself a
- 0:13Speaker 1: place in the title fight. But could we see Katim
- 0:17Speaker 1: shine at their home race this year and finally score
- 0:21Speaker 1: their long awaited Moto GP victory. I'm your host, Rinita
- 0:25Speaker 1: Vanmullen and here to drop more knowledge than Juan Mire
- 0:28Speaker 1: drops the Honda. Matt Clayton, Matt, we're officially back and
- 0:33Speaker 1: halfway halfway through the twenty twenty fourth season and headed
- 0:37Speaker 1: to one of the four tracks that Moto GP share
- 0:40Speaker 1: with their four wheeled counterparts. F one.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I love the fact that we're four episodes into this
- 0:45Speaker 2: ornata and you're already doing Juanmir jokes because that's usually
- 0:49Speaker 2: my line.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I feel bad, but I pick on Jean Poorsha. It's
- 0:51Speaker 3: not his fault.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But yeah, we're four epsit and you're already I'm already
- 0:55Speaker 2: influencing you negatively or positively, depending on Hey, you want
- 0:57Speaker 2: to look at it? So lovely to be here as all,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and look, this is always such an interesting race Austria
- 1:04Speaker 2: because the track is just so different. I mean, I
- 1:07Speaker 2: know it's a bit of a cop app to say
- 1:08Speaker 2: the word different, but it's unlike anywhere else. You mentioned
- 1:12Speaker 2: that it's one of those dual purpose circuits with their
- 1:14Speaker 2: flighter Motor GP, but there's nothing quite like it on
- 1:16Speaker 2: the Motor GP calendar. Because you look at a track
- 1:19Speaker 2: BAP of this place, do you think, well, it's not
- 1:21Speaker 2: that hard, is it. It's got three strakes with a
- 1:22Speaker 2: bit of a squiggly bit in the middle. But it's
- 1:25Speaker 2: such a difficult track to get right because the margins
- 1:27Speaker 2: of era are so low, and I'm sure we'll get
- 1:29Speaker 2: into that through this episode, but it always throws up
- 1:32Speaker 2: an intriguing race too, So I'm very curious to see what.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Happens this Sunday.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Let's chat about that, because you know, this
- 1:39Speaker 1: track is known as one of the harder breaking tracks
- 1:42Speaker 1: that Motor GP do. Go to Brembo. We're saying that
- 1:46Speaker 1: normally the writers they have a choice of three different
- 1:49Speaker 1: thiss three twenty mil, three forty and three point fifty five, right,
- 1:53Speaker 1: But at this circuit, because it is such hard breaking,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the lighter ones they're just not allowed to use. They
- 1:58Speaker 1: go for the harder ones, but also the amount of
- 2:01Speaker 1: heat that they're putting in through these discs. They have
- 2:04Speaker 1: little little winglets I guess we call them little little
- 2:06Speaker 1: fins on the discs to help disperse and keep it cool.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And that just shows you how much pressure these riders
- 2:12Speaker 1: are putting literally through their breaks. You know, they're breaking
- 2:16Speaker 1: for three point five seconds deceleration of one point three g's.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It's crazy because on the TV it doesn't do it justice.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We're not seeing this because it looks so flat and
- 2:26Speaker 1: like they're just riding around having fun. But when you
- 2:28Speaker 1: see stats like that, it's like, wow, Okay, this is
- 2:32Speaker 1: a circuit where the riders are putting themselves to the limit.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, we only saw what happened when you
- 2:38Speaker 2: arrive at turn one with no breaks. Meverick ri Nalis
- 2:40Speaker 2: is probably still remembering that one a couple of years
- 2:42Speaker 2: ago where he got to turn one, had no brakes
- 2:44Speaker 2: and had to decide whether to crash with his motorcycle
- 2:47Speaker 2: or without it and bailed out.
- 2:48Speaker 3: That was terrifying.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But there's some massive stops at this place, and I
- 2:52Speaker 2: think the other thing you said there where TV doesn't
- 2:54Speaker 2: do it justice. The elevation change is huge as well,
- 2:57Speaker 2: particularly into term one, and it's a track that you
- 3:00Speaker 2: make up all your time underbreaking and a lot of
- 3:03Speaker 2: the breaking is in a straight line because a lot
- 3:04Speaker 2: of the corners are ninety left or ninety right, So
- 3:07Speaker 2: super different with the way you have to approach this track.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But the curious thing for me is, you know, you
- 3:13Speaker 2: remember what happened up at turn well, it was called
- 3:16Speaker 2: turn two then it's now called turn three about three
- 3:18Speaker 2: or four years ago, with that absolutely terrifying accident where
- 3:20Speaker 2: bikes were flying through the apexes of corners and what
- 3:23Speaker 2: have you. That chicane was put between what was turns
- 3:27Speaker 2: one and two then one and three now to try
- 3:29Speaker 2: and slow the bikes down. I think putting an extra
- 3:31Speaker 2: chicane in there, which means an extra stop and an
- 3:33Speaker 2: extra start again almost increases the jeopardy to some degree.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Because you've reduced the speeds going into that uphill right
- 3:39Speaker 2: handed there, which is now turned three, you still got
- 3:42Speaker 2: to negotiate this weird little chicane in the straight in between,
- 3:45Speaker 2: so it adds another variable. It always looks a bit
- 3:48Speaker 2: messy to me. I don't know about you, but it
- 3:49Speaker 2: doesn't look great on the TV, but it's probably an
- 3:52Speaker 2: imperfect solution to a problem that needed to be solved.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So I guess I didn't really have a choice.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Did they exactly this circuit where it is located in
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Austrian mountain side Spielberg, the famous movie director, I
- 4:05Speaker 1: think somehow has a relation to it. I'm not too sure.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But where the track is I actually haven't been myself,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but it's literally on the side of a mountain, so
- 4:14Speaker 1: they can't actually change the circuit too much. And when
- 4:17Speaker 1: that incident that we're talking about, I don't know how
- 4:21Speaker 1: the riders walked away from that how No one was
- 4:24Speaker 1: in jibbled. They were scraping it so fine. They had
- 4:28Speaker 1: to put that chicane in. There was no way that
- 4:31Speaker 1: that could have passed the test again because like you said,
- 4:34Speaker 1: going into that old turn too, there was like a
- 4:37Speaker 1: slight kink where they're still flat out through that kink
- 4:40Speaker 1: before they're heading into what is there essentially that ninety
- 4:43Speaker 1: degree turn. It is messy, but like you said, there
- 4:48Speaker 1: was no real real way around it. They had to
- 4:51Speaker 1: do something to slow these riders up. But it's funny
- 4:54Speaker 1: that they call this chicane turned to A and T
- 4:57Speaker 1: B it to just be called a chicane.
- 5:00Speaker 2: They're almost apologizing you for hab to get in there.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And the track map is it makes me laugh about it.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's like, oh yeah, here's two A two, be just
- 5:06Speaker 2: whisper it and no one will notice. But I mean, look, effectively,
- 5:09Speaker 2: this is a car track. Let's be honest. When you
- 5:11Speaker 2: only have to see where the arm COO barriers are
- 5:13Speaker 2: and what have you. And I remember when the changes
- 5:17Speaker 2: to the regulations for twenty twenty seven were brought out
- 5:19Speaker 2: and they were talking about the bikes being too fast
- 5:21Speaker 2: for some of the tracks. The two places I instantly
- 5:24Speaker 2: thought of were urn one at Magello where they come
- 5:26Speaker 2: over the crest there and you've got the big concrete
- 5:28Speaker 2: wall on the left hand side, and pretty much the
- 5:30Speaker 2: whole of Austria because there are so many areas there.
- 5:34Speaker 3: It is a car track.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You can only move the fences and walls back so far,
- 5:37Speaker 2: as you said, because you're carved into the side of
- 5:39Speaker 2: a mountain. I think the chicane is part of a
- 5:42Speaker 2: series of imperfect solutions for this place, but it is
- 5:44Speaker 2: one of the ones that I thought of that look,
- 5:47Speaker 2: it's great that we have this race. It's super well attended.
- 5:49Speaker 2: We've got the KTM presence, but you wonder if the
- 5:52Speaker 2: machinery is outgrowing the track a little bit. Look possibly,
- 5:55Speaker 2: maybe the change in twenty twenty seven will change things
- 5:58Speaker 2: back in the favor of the bikes to I guess
- 6:01Speaker 2: it's why the writers love it. It is one of
- 6:03Speaker 2: those ones that's a little bit dicey in terms of safety,
- 6:05Speaker 2: so obviously rewards the brave. But we got pretty lucky
- 6:08Speaker 2: there a few years ago. Let's make no two bones
- 6:10Speaker 2: about that. There was not a great deal of skill
- 6:12Speaker 2: involved in people not getting hurt that day. We just
- 6:14Speaker 2: got pretty lucky, and thankfully we did.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, No, definitely, it was one of those things that
- 6:20Speaker 1: you never want a witness and you don't ever want
- 6:22Speaker 1: to see again. We want racing to be fun and safe,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and that definitely crossed the line. But speaking of the
- 6:29Speaker 1: way that the writers, I guess prepare for this circuit,
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was reading an article with Elisia Spargaru and he
- 6:35Speaker 1: just came out sit it straight away. He goes, this
- 6:38Speaker 1: circuit Austria is a start and stop circuit. It doesn't
- 6:41Speaker 1: suit me and my writing style, and he believes it
- 6:44Speaker 1: doesn't suit the apriliers, and we know that from history.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So when Moto GP did go back there, I think
- 6:49Speaker 1: it was twenty sixteen was the first year that they
- 6:52Speaker 1: went back. From then, it's just been a Jew caddie
- 6:56Speaker 1: dominant circuit. And that's not because jew caddies have always
- 7:00Speaker 1: necessarily being the dominant manufacturer from twenty sixteen, but it
- 7:03Speaker 1: just seems to suit certain riders looking back. You know
- 7:07Speaker 1: historically Andre de Visioso he won there four times in
- 7:10Speaker 1: a row, well not in a rows rod there was
- 7:12Speaker 1: a one break with Jllhei Lorenzo, but four winds the
- 7:15Speaker 1: Lorenzo Pecos one twice, and then we had that win
- 7:18Speaker 1: from Brad Binda and Miguel Olivera as well. So it's
- 7:22Speaker 1: too Catti and then a little bit of KTM in there.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I'm still laughing at Brad Binder because you remember he
- 7:27Speaker 2: stayed out on slicks on a wet track. I don't
- 7:29Speaker 2: think I've ever seen a guide ride slower to win
- 7:31Speaker 2: a race. Like every single quarter it looked like he
- 7:33Speaker 2: was going to come off. It was one of those
- 7:35Speaker 2: nothing ventured, nothing gained wins. But it's interesting where you
- 7:38Speaker 2: mentioned Ducaddi. This was always Ducaddi's track. Before Ducaddi was
- 7:41Speaker 2: the bike to be on, they would go there and
- 7:43Speaker 2: it was always this outlier of a circuit. It's a
- 7:46Speaker 2: point and squirt track, hardbreaking straight line speed. That was
- 7:49Speaker 2: the bike to bo and you mentioned Andrea and Oni
- 7:51Speaker 2: there and Andreda Vicio, so it always used to seem
- 7:54Speaker 2: to get into last light battles with mart Marquez and
- 7:56Speaker 2: beat him at that track as well. There are a
- 7:57Speaker 2: couple of absolutely awesome final corners between those two. But
- 8:01Speaker 2: this was when Ducati wasn't the bike to be on
- 8:03Speaker 2: at pretty much every track. We've seen what they've done
- 8:06Speaker 2: this season already, and they've locked out the last seven
- 8:08Speaker 2: podiums now and you mentioned Elashan Aprilia. We've gone from
- 8:12Speaker 2: just the polar opposite circuit for the previous race at Silverstone,
- 8:15Speaker 2: where it's all fast and flowing, and the Aprilla looked
- 8:18Speaker 2: absolutely beautiful there, particularly in Elisha's hands in qualifying. But
- 8:22Speaker 2: this circuit is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So I'd be surprised if Aprillia did a heat this weekend.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Perhaps it brings Katie and back into the mix, and
- 8:33Speaker 2: don't discount someone like Pedro Costa there. I'm sure he'll
- 8:35Speaker 2: want to put on a good show in front of
- 8:37Speaker 2: his new employers for next year. But it does feel
- 8:40Speaker 2: to me that we're looking at a Doucadi circuit again,
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think, maybe more specifically, and it was something I
- 8:45Speaker 2: touched on this week in a story for Fox Sports
- 8:47Speaker 2: dot com dot Au. The GP twenty four Ducati has
- 8:51Speaker 2: taken a massive leap over last year's GP twenty three,
- 8:54Speaker 2: and I know that sounds a bit reductive. It's like, well,
- 8:57Speaker 2: the new bike is supposed to be better than the
- 8:59Speaker 2: old bike. That's how it works. But last year we
- 9:01Speaker 2: didn't see such a massive step between the twenty three
- 9:04Speaker 2: and the twenty two. The twenty two was still winning
- 9:06Speaker 2: races with Marco Betzeki and Fabio de jan Antonio. But
- 9:09Speaker 2: the twenty four this year has just made this huge
- 9:12Speaker 2: step over the twenty three. And we can tell how
- 9:14Speaker 2: good the twenty four is because Mark Marquez is on
- 9:16Speaker 2: a GP twenty three and he still hasn't one yet.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And I keep using the word yet because I think
- 9:20Speaker 2: he will. But if you're on a GP twenty four
- 9:23Speaker 2: and you're in Austria, that means that one of four riders.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I will be absolutely shocked if they don't win this weekend,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and I'll be super shocked if it is Freeko Morbert Delli.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So maybe it's a race in three this weekend. But yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 2: definitely a Decadi track. We don't need any of those
- 9:36Speaker 2: at the moment, do we. But this is probably the
- 9:38Speaker 2: track that they would expect to be dominant on more
- 9:41Speaker 2: than any for the rest of this year.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I'd reckon.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I actually wanted to ask you because on the Fox
- 9:47Speaker 1: Sports Socials I posted a clip from another article that
- 9:51Speaker 1: I read on a European website where it was the
- 9:55Speaker 1: X I think Crew Chief or someone at ELSR was
- 9:59Speaker 1: talking about Mark My Marquez and at Silverstone he could
- 10:03Speaker 1: really see those differences between the GP twenty three and
- 10:06Speaker 1: the GP twenty four. He also counts in that Mark's
- 10:09Speaker 1: still not one hundred percent with his arm. But I
- 10:11Speaker 1: wanted to ask you, with this style circuit, being it
- 10:15Speaker 1: is quite fast the stop in side, do you think
- 10:17Speaker 1: we're going to see that big expansion again between the
- 10:20Speaker 1: two model do you? Caaddes.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, I think one of the biggest areas of
- 10:24Speaker 2: progress within them this year is the is the device
- 10:27Speaker 2: as they like to call it basically getting out of
- 10:29Speaker 2: the slow corders and getting the traction down. And we
- 10:31Speaker 2: know that there's some big stops and big traction zones
- 10:35Speaker 2: at this particular circuit, So I think it will probably
- 10:37Speaker 2: show the difference between the twenty four and the twenty
- 10:39Speaker 2: three bikes where this track does offer you some solace
- 10:43Speaker 2: if you're not on one of those twenty four bikes.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Is it really rewards the best breaking riders on the grid.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And we mentioned to Vicioso before he was kind of
- 10:51Speaker 2: the last of the late breakers. He was absolutely awesome
- 10:53Speaker 2: on the breaks, and you'll see guys making positions up
- 10:57Speaker 2: under breaks that they may not be able to sustain
- 11:00Speaker 2: the straight. So you get these sort of cat and
- 11:01Speaker 2: mouse fights at somewhere like the Red Bull Ring. And
- 11:04Speaker 2: I immediately think of Jack Miller here because you remember
- 11:08Speaker 2: the old straight between turns one and two. He would
- 11:10Speaker 2: always do the Scandinavian flick coming to the top of
- 11:13Speaker 2: the hill at turned three. There it looked absolutely fantastic,
- 11:15Speaker 2: but really good on the break. So I think the
- 11:18Speaker 2: riders that are able to get their bikes stop the
- 11:20Speaker 2: best at a track where as you said, breaking is
- 11:23Speaker 2: so critically important, that's going to be a big factor.
- 11:26Speaker 2: But in terms of the strength of the twenty four
- 11:28Speaker 2: and its ability to get out of the slow speed corners,
- 11:31Speaker 2: there's three particular points at this track where I think
- 11:33Speaker 2: that's going to be pretty obvious, not so much the
- 11:35Speaker 2: last sector of the lapse, So that gives me some
- 11:37Speaker 2: optimism that that's not how a close race is going
- 11:40Speaker 2: to be decided, but the story of the race out
- 11:43Speaker 2: of turn one, out of turn three, particularly how you
- 11:46Speaker 2: set those last few laps up. I think the twenty
- 11:48Speaker 2: four decatie still has an advantage over the twenty three bike.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's going to be really interesting this weekend. I was
- 11:54Speaker 1: looking at the weather forecast before we're calling oh boy,
- 11:57Speaker 1: yes today someday. We are looking at ninety percent chance
- 12:02Speaker 1: of rain and thunderstorms in Austria, and I've heard over
- 12:06Speaker 1: there there's been thunderstorms, it's been a massive heat wave,
- 12:08Speaker 1: they've had hail. And it makes me think you mentioned
- 12:12Speaker 1: earlier that that Brad Bnda win back in twenty twenty
- 12:15Speaker 1: one on the slicks. Could this be the first wet
- 12:19Speaker 1: race because we haven't had a Moto GP wet race
- 12:21Speaker 1: since Japan last year, But also could it be the
- 12:24Speaker 1: first flag to flag that we've had in a long
- 12:26Speaker 1: time as well. And then what's going to happen then?
- 12:30Speaker 1: Is it going to be Docaddie Domino or we're going
- 12:31Speaker 1: to see Jack Miller, Pedro Acosta these other guys who
- 12:35Speaker 1: are just thrive in those conditions up the front.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, all of South Africa doing a rain dance as
- 12:40Speaker 2: you're setting that out in that last sentence there. But look,
- 12:43Speaker 2: I think, particularly to track like this too, with the
- 12:46Speaker 2: elevation that we mentioned, if it rains, kind of all
- 12:48Speaker 2: better off. You've got some guys that we know are
- 12:50Speaker 2: particularly good in the wet Jack Miller's one of the
- 12:53Speaker 2: examples there that you mentioned. But look, if it rains,
- 12:57Speaker 2: it's because of the nature of these corners right angled courtners.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I guess you would say it's really easy to tuck
- 13:03Speaker 2: the front at a wet circuit like Austria. And yes,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I was looking at that forecast and thought to myself, right,
- 13:09Speaker 2: maybe this is the race where we have this sort
- 13:12Speaker 2: of shaking of the dominance that Dicati's had over these
- 13:14Speaker 2: past seven Grand Prix. So wouldn't surprise me in that
- 13:18Speaker 2: part of the world is very volatile, I would be
- 13:20Speaker 2: surprised if all three classes got through Sunday without one
- 13:23Speaker 2: of them being very wet. And as you said before,
- 13:25Speaker 2: when you were talking about wet races, the one that
- 13:27Speaker 2: I went to, I was thinking Argentina. I'd totally forgotten
- 13:30Speaker 2: about Motegi getting shortened last year with Jorge Martin winning that,
- 13:33Speaker 2: but I was thinking back to Argentina, and that's April
- 13:36Speaker 2: last year.
- 13:36Speaker 3: We've had this.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Bizarre set of circumstances where the weather's actually been pretty good.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Of course the asterisk. Of course, the weather was so
- 13:44Speaker 2: bad in Australia on the Sunday that we didn't have
- 13:45Speaker 2: a Sunday last year, so I don't know if that counts,
- 13:47Speaker 2: but at least we've got a Grand Prix and on
- 13:49Speaker 2: the Saturday at Philip Island. But yes, weird, isn't it.
- 13:51Speaker 2: We haven't seen too much wet running for a while.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And I wouldn't mind have been a flagged if flag
- 13:56Speaker 2: just despice things up. When we've got twenty races a year,
- 13:58Speaker 2: let's throw a couple of very in there.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Exactly. We love it when they come into pit lane,
- 14:03Speaker 1: they do their little flag to flag practice and the
- 14:05Speaker 1: occasional trip over a real will starter or something as
- 14:08Speaker 1: we see Mark as in pit Lane before. But let's
- 14:12Speaker 1: talk about an aamashniny I mentioned him in the intro.
- 14:15Speaker 1: He's fresh off his back to back victories at Silverston.
- 14:20Speaker 1: He is going to be on a high. He's got
- 14:22Speaker 1: next year locked away, so he just needs to focus
- 14:25Speaker 1: on maintaining his health for this year and obviously not
- 14:28Speaker 1: crashing out. How do you think he's going to I
- 14:32Speaker 1: guess feel, but also be going into this weekend? Is
- 14:35Speaker 1: he going to be going into it with the new
- 14:37Speaker 1: round confidence that he is in that title fight now
- 14:41Speaker 1: and he shouldn't have been pushed aside by Jacaddi.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny, isn't it, Like he after Silverston said
- 14:47Speaker 2: he didn't think he was a title contender. I actually
- 14:49Speaker 2: wrote that weekend that's probably the first mistake he made
- 14:51Speaker 2: the entire weekend, because he won the Sprint and he
- 14:53Speaker 2: won the Grand Prix, and to say that you're not
- 14:55Speaker 2: a championship contender. We keep forgetting because it's the middle
- 14:58Speaker 2: of August. We still have half the season to go.
- 15:00Speaker 2: He's only forty nine points off the series lead. There's
- 15:03Speaker 2: thirty seven max for a weekend, so he's absolutely in
- 15:07Speaker 2: the mix. We mentioned you want to be on a Ducaddi,
- 15:09Speaker 2: so one box ticked. You want to be on a
- 15:11Speaker 2: GP twenty four du Kadi another box ticked. And look,
- 15:15Speaker 2: I don't think he's as annoyed with Ducati as Jorje Martinez.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I think it'll be reasonably amicable with him leaving there.
- 15:22Speaker 2: But don't get it confused. I mean he's absolutely writing
- 15:25Speaker 2: for himself at this point, and we saw how good
- 15:28Speaker 2: he can be at Silveston when he qualifies towards the front,
- 15:31Speaker 2: he often gives himself too much to do. After qualifying
- 15:34Speaker 2: on the second or third row, he's the best writer
- 15:36Speaker 2: in the grid over the last half or maybe last
- 15:39Speaker 2: auto of a race because of his unreal ability to
- 15:42Speaker 2: preserve high life.
- 15:43Speaker 3: He's so good laid in races, but.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Sometimes that means he's coming from seventh to fourth or
- 15:48Speaker 2: from sixth to sneak onto the podium. If he qualifies
- 15:51Speaker 2: in the top three, first row, first four, he's absolutely
- 15:56Speaker 2: in there because we know how strong he is laid
- 15:58Speaker 2: in races.
- 15:58Speaker 3: And doesn't that throw an.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Interesting little curveball into this title fight because all year
- 16:03Speaker 2: it looks like it's been a bit of a reprisal
- 16:05Speaker 2: of Martine Banyai from last year. But Bashianen's there, he's
- 16:10Speaker 2: on the right bike. We know how good the guy
- 16:12Speaker 2: can be. As you mentioned before, staying injury free, he's
- 16:15Speaker 2: always a thing for him. Like I kind of feel
- 16:18Speaker 2: that his time at the factory team was like a
- 16:21Speaker 2: bit inconclusive because last year was a right off. I mean,
- 16:23Speaker 2: he missed half the season with various injuries. We know
- 16:26Speaker 2: how good he was on that Grassini bike the year before,
- 16:28Speaker 2: and then you know, a third of the wager this
- 16:30Speaker 2: year he was basically given his marching orders for Mark
- 16:33Speaker 2: Marquez and all the craziness that started in that rider
- 16:35Speaker 2: market after that. So I think he's going to be
- 16:38Speaker 2: a significant factor because we know how good his best
- 16:41Speaker 2: is and if he's injury free and if he can
- 16:44Speaker 2: qualify in the first two rows are two big gifts.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I can see him being a significant factor for the
- 16:48Speaker 2: rest of the year simply because he's got nothing to lose,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and b he's on the right bike and he could
- 16:54Speaker 2: be a bit of a headache and that Factory Ducati
- 16:56Speaker 2: team it's pretty amicable with him and Pekko at the moment,
- 16:59Speaker 2: but with half the season to go, you know, the
- 17:02Speaker 2: Factory doesn't want Juge Martin to win the title. Let's
- 17:04Speaker 2: be perfectly frank, because you'll be taking the number one too.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Are Prillier with him next year? So it could be
- 17:08Speaker 2: some hard conversations in that Dacadie garage. I reckon they
- 17:11Speaker 2: could be pretty good fun.
- 17:12Speaker 1: But they're not gonna want an A Vashnini to take
- 17:15Speaker 1: the number one plate over to ADM either. They want
- 17:18Speaker 1: Peker to have it.
- 17:20Speaker 2: No, of course, it's kind of the lesser of two evils,
- 17:22Speaker 2: like do you want Martin to take the number one
- 17:24Speaker 2: plate to another manufacturer or do you at least if
- 17:27Speaker 2: Badyai doesn't win it, at least the factory to caddy
- 17:29Speaker 2: teams by the championship. I mean, it's it's evil and
- 17:31Speaker 2: slightly less evil. But yeah, it's all by degrees, isn't it.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I think we know who the factory would like to win,
- 17:36Speaker 2: and you would have to say that Peco's still probably
- 17:39Speaker 2: your favorite to win it. But just when we thought
- 17:42Speaker 2: we had it sorted out before Silverston, it all got
- 17:44Speaker 2: a little bit more interesting, didn't it.
- 17:46Speaker 1: It definitely did, and hopefully we're not seeing any more
- 17:50Speaker 1: change The track map four coming up on the screen
- 17:52Speaker 1: any any little secret Corde words coming through.
- 17:56Speaker 3: We'll save that for Malaysia. It tends to happen in
- 17:58Speaker 3: Malaysia that sort of thing.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Touch on Jujey Martin real quick. He actually scored his
- 18:03Speaker 1: first ever Moto GP win at this circuit. It does
- 18:06Speaker 1: hold some good memories for him. I think we all
- 18:10Speaker 1: know that he's working on overcoming some of his weaknesses
- 18:13Speaker 1: and we are seeing him become a new writer. This weekend,
- 18:18Speaker 1: I feel is going to be quite pivotal for him
- 18:21Speaker 1: because he's out to prove a point. We know that.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I just have a feeling that this weekend he's really
- 18:28Speaker 1: going to try and push hard.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Well, particularly too, This almost feels like a bit of
- 18:33Speaker 2: an away fixture if you're going to use sort of
- 18:35Speaker 2: football or soccer terms or what have you. Because Banya
- 18:37Speaker 2: is so good here in Austria that any points that
- 18:40Speaker 2: Martin's able to gain on Peko or perhaps save from
- 18:44Speaker 2: him if Peko has one of those Peco weekends, I
- 18:47Speaker 2: think is super important. And I was quite impressed with
- 18:50Speaker 2: how he approached Silverstone because we know what he'd done
- 18:53Speaker 2: the previous race. He crashing the lead in Germany, all
- 18:56Speaker 2: very embarrassing. Everyone's doing the oh you know, Jem Martin's
- 18:59Speaker 2: being jull haeyma ten again. He actually rode really intelligently
- 19:03Speaker 2: and he kept using the word intelligent. I think we
- 19:04Speaker 2: mentioned that on the last podcast. He kept saying the
- 19:06Speaker 2: word intelligent after all of his answers after the race
- 19:08Speaker 2: on Sunday there, So you know, maybe he's turning over
- 19:11Speaker 2: a bit of a new leaf. I don't think he's
- 19:13Speaker 2: ever going to be the sort of cerebral, you know,
- 19:16Speaker 2: thinking man's writer like pekoe Is. I think that's just
- 19:19Speaker 2: going against his instincts. But this is a big weekend
- 19:22Speaker 2: for him because he's got the championship lead back. And
- 19:24Speaker 2: I'm going to put my hand up as someone that
- 19:26Speaker 2: thought once he dropped it at the Saxon Ring and
- 19:28Speaker 2: he lost a championship lead. Given all we just talked
- 19:31Speaker 2: about before, he's off to a Prillier Pramax leaving to
- 19:35Speaker 2: go to Yamahara. Thought all of those circumstances and Banyai
- 19:38Speaker 2: with the championship lead, that might be the last time
- 19:40Speaker 2: we see Martine in the lead of the championship, even
- 19:43Speaker 2: though that was half the season to go. So shows
- 19:45Speaker 2: you what I know after one race. But yeah, he'll
- 19:47Speaker 2: be super keen to try and keep that momentum going
- 19:50Speaker 2: from Silverstone and anything he does against Banyai this weekend.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I mean he's got a three point lead now. If
- 19:55Speaker 2: he can retain the lead or at least not lose
- 19:58Speaker 2: too many points at Watson very much a pecout track,
- 20:01Speaker 2: I think that's a big box tick Foray this weekend.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, Like I said, I think he's really really
- 20:07Speaker 1: going to push hard this this weekend. It's going to
- 20:09Speaker 1: be interesting to see the outcome. Look, like we've mentioned,
- 20:12Speaker 1: You've mentioned Pekabanaya, this is a track that suits him.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He's won two races here previously. We know he's going
- 20:18Speaker 1: to be strong. But when I was doing some research
- 20:21Speaker 1: in the lead up to this weekend, I came across
- 20:24Speaker 1: a fact that I never thought I would ever say,
- 20:27Speaker 1: Mark Marquez has never won in Austria. Can you believe
- 20:31Speaker 1: that Mark Marquez has never wanted a circuit?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Yeah? You almost have to.
- 20:35Speaker 2: You read it and you know it to be true,
- 20:37Speaker 2: and then you've read it again just to make sure
- 20:38Speaker 2: that you haven't actually your eyes have it deceived you.
- 20:40Speaker 2: But it's funny, isn't it, Because we're talking about Divitzioso before,
- 20:43Speaker 2: and whenever I think of Marquez and Austria, I think
- 20:46Speaker 2: of him being on the best bike and then being
- 20:48Speaker 2: beaten by Andrea de Vitzioso on the last lap. That's
- 20:51Speaker 2: all I think about with him and Austria. It's bizarre,
- 20:53Speaker 2: isn't it that he's never been that right there? I
- 20:56Speaker 2: mean part of it was it is a bit of
- 20:59Speaker 2: an outlier track and the when it was in its
- 21:01Speaker 2: heyday was really good everywhere else, so it was a
- 21:03Speaker 2: bit of an anomalous circuit for Mark. But yeah, look
- 21:07Speaker 2: he's on a Ducatty. He's probably sick of being beaten
- 21:09Speaker 2: by Ducatti's in Austria, so at least he's on the
- 21:11Speaker 2: right bike. But yeah, it is funny, isn't it. For
- 21:13Speaker 2: all his success elsewhere, and there's always these circuits with
- 21:16Speaker 2: particular riders. It's like, for whatever reason, it's almost like
- 21:19Speaker 2: the black Cat circuit for them, and you know, Austria
- 21:22Speaker 2: is that for him And it is weird to say,
- 21:24Speaker 2: but it is true.
- 21:25Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Well, we've touched on I guess the top four and
- 21:29Speaker 1: the top four caddies. Let's quickly touch on KTM and
- 21:33Speaker 1: gas gas. It technically is their home race because their
- 21:37Speaker 1: factory is not that far their relation with Red Bull
- 21:40Speaker 1: Hangar seven, all that happens around this area. Like I mentioned,
- 21:43Speaker 1: Brad Binda did win here in that bizarre wet race
- 21:47Speaker 1: him on slicks. If you don't know what we're talking about,
- 21:49Speaker 1: check it out because it is phenomenal to see that
- 21:52Speaker 1: he even kept that bike up right. But I wanted
- 21:55Speaker 1: to talk about Pedro Acosta because back in his Moto
- 21:59Speaker 1: two days, he's been really strong here and I'm interested
- 22:03Speaker 1: to see this weekend if he's also going to be
- 22:06Speaker 1: one to start trying to prove points with katm. I
- 22:09Speaker 1: know that over the summer break he was at their factory.
- 22:12Speaker 1: He's working on developing the bike. He's trying to put
- 22:15Speaker 1: in as much as possible.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Do you think we.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Could see a much stronger Pedro Acosta this weekend.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I think if you were to take any rookie season
- 22:25Speaker 2: in isolation and say well, after half the season, he'd
- 22:27Speaker 2: be six of the World Championship and he's got a
- 22:29Speaker 2: couple of podiums, you'd be like, right, okay, this guy's
- 22:31Speaker 2: pretty special. But it's funny with the Costa because his
- 22:34Speaker 2: start was so crazy with those two podiums in the
- 22:37Speaker 2: first three that it feels like it's flattened out a
- 22:39Speaker 2: little bit, and maybe that might be to do with
- 22:42Speaker 2: the machinery he's writing as much as what he's doing.
- 22:44Speaker 2: But he's really set up well for a good second
- 22:47Speaker 2: half of the season. He's certainly got no job security issues.
- 22:50Speaker 2: He knows he's going to be the main focus there.
- 22:53Speaker 2: As you said, he's been there good previously and look
- 22:57Speaker 2: a prillier probably not as much of a fact this weekend,
- 23:00Speaker 2: so it probably elevates the KTMS into being potentially best
- 23:03Speaker 2: to the rest. Wouldn't surprise me if he's sniffing around
- 23:06Speaker 2: the podium, maybe in the sprint more than the Grand Prix.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think a lot of it will depend on where
- 23:10Speaker 2: he qualifies. Maintaining it over a full twenty eight lap
- 23:13Speaker 2: bustance is going to be difficult, but it wouldn't surprise
- 23:15Speaker 2: me if he's right up there in the sprint.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And I think.
- 23:18Speaker 2: KTM need a bit of a shot in the arm
- 23:21Speaker 2: because it's kind of petered out a little bit. Like
- 23:23Speaker 2: Brad Binder's having a perfectly acceptable season, but it's certainly
- 23:26Speaker 2: not at the same level that he had last year.
- 23:29Speaker 2: We know what KTM think of Jack Miller and Augusto
- 23:31Speaker 2: Fernandez because they're not employing them for next year. So
- 23:34Speaker 2: look a good chance for a Costa to have a
- 23:37Speaker 2: big race for the manufacturer at its home Grand Prix.
- 23:40Speaker 3: And you mentioned the Red Bull influence and so on
- 23:42Speaker 3: and so forth.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I think it's a good opportunity for him, and it
- 23:44Speaker 2: wouldn't surprise me if he comes into this second half
- 23:47Speaker 2: wanting to try and get back on track, just because
- 23:50Speaker 2: it's flattened out a little bit. I don't want to
- 23:52Speaker 2: be too critical of the guys twenty years old. He's
- 23:54Speaker 2: doing awesome things in his rookie season, but it's just
- 23:57Speaker 2: not quite maintain the height of those first couple of races,
- 24:01Speaker 2: which was probably unrealistic. I mean, he was still a teenager,
- 24:03Speaker 2: but he was doing that. So we can't be too harsh,
- 24:05Speaker 2: can we.
- 24:06Speaker 1: He's still a teenager, that's crazy to say, considered ridiculous.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Alicia Spargo is edging on forty, so it's just phenomenal.
- 24:14Speaker 1: But this weekend, katm they're test writer and Exmoto GP
- 24:18Speaker 1: writer Paula Spargaro is coming in for his wild card entry,
- 24:23Speaker 1: and I think that's going to be really good for KATM.
- 24:25Speaker 1: It's good to have the fan base that the Aspargo
- 24:28Speaker 1: brothers do have. They've been in the paddock for so long.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I think to see him back on the track is
- 24:34Speaker 1: going to be awesome. But I think it's going to
- 24:36Speaker 1: be good for KATM to keep continuing to test, keep building.
- 24:39Speaker 1: They can all work together because they all share data, right,
- 24:42Speaker 1: They're all working together to try and build this as
- 24:45Speaker 1: much as they can. But I don't know if we're
- 24:48Speaker 1: going to see a massive result from Paula Spargo.
- 24:52Speaker 3: No.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I mean, we were talking to Remy Gardner and our
- 24:55Speaker 2: British GPE preview, weren't we. Like the role of these
- 24:57Speaker 2: wild cards or test riders is not necessarily to go
- 25:00Speaker 2: out there and ride for yourself. It's a data gathering
- 25:03Speaker 2: exercise in a race weekend setting. And Pole's super experienced. Obviously,
- 25:07Speaker 2: he knows his way around Red Bull Ring. He's actually
- 25:09Speaker 2: been quite good there in the past. We remember the
- 25:12Speaker 2: fight with him and Jack Miller and then Miguel Olivera
- 25:14Speaker 2: stole it off them in one of the two races
- 25:16Speaker 2: there in the COVID years. But yeah, it's an interesting
- 25:19Speaker 2: one because look, more data for the factory poles. An
- 25:22Speaker 2: experienced hand he knows his way around that place, so
- 25:25Speaker 2: it can only be a positive. But as Remy was
- 25:28Speaker 2: telling us in that last episode, you come into these weekends.
- 25:31Speaker 2: It's nice if you have a good result, but it's
- 25:33Speaker 2: not what you're being asked to do. I know that
- 25:35Speaker 2: sounds strange as a writer and a race but that's
- 25:39Speaker 2: not really the job description. So look great to see
- 25:41Speaker 2: him back. We know the popularity that he's got. The
- 25:43Speaker 2: Austrians will love having another orange bike to cheer.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Won't they. So that's all.
- 25:46Speaker 2: It's going to be handy as well, So he'll play
- 25:48Speaker 2: a role this weekend, but I don't see it being
- 25:51Speaker 2: a role if he was to get into Q two
- 25:53Speaker 2: or something that would be worthy of massive applause for
- 25:55Speaker 2: a guy who's only ridden.
- 25:57Speaker 3: One race this year.
- 25:58Speaker 2: It's certainly nice to see him back, and I'm just
- 26:00Speaker 2: a bit disappointed he's going to have to hang up
- 26:02Speaker 2: the retro outfit from Silverston.
- 26:04Speaker 3: As you probably saw on social media.
- 26:06Speaker 2: He was certainly dressed the part for Moto GP seventy
- 26:09Speaker 2: five year anniversary. He looked like something out of Peaky
- 26:11Speaker 2: Blinders or something. You had the hat and the waistcoat
- 26:14Speaker 2: going so back to more familiar clothes for our poll
- 26:17Speaker 2: this weekend.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Just think thinking about his outfit, it was brilliant and
- 26:22Speaker 1: I think as well fantastic. They needed, they needed people
- 26:25Speaker 1: to go and put that effort in. We didn't actually
- 26:27Speaker 1: see too much of that from Gonna, but we discussed
- 26:30Speaker 1: all that in our previous episodes. If you want to
- 26:32Speaker 1: listen to that, you can head back and listen to
- 26:35Speaker 1: our post Silverstone episode. Before we move on quickly to
- 26:39Speaker 1: some news from our Aussie writer in Moto three, let's
- 26:43Speaker 1: touch on Jack Miller because current rumors at the time
- 26:45Speaker 1: of recording this is we could have Jack Miller stay
- 26:48Speaker 1: in Moto GP and head over to Ramaha or whether
- 26:52Speaker 1: I love to you at the moment, for Omaha for
- 26:55Speaker 1: next year. Although nothing's been confirmed, there's talks that apparently
- 26:59Speaker 1: he's got one cheek secured on the bike currently, so
- 27:03Speaker 1: that could be exciting for next year.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Just needs to slide the other one, doesn't he. But look,
- 27:08Speaker 2: it's all pointing towards there being a potential union with
- 27:13Speaker 2: Jack and the Pramak Yamaha team. And this one would
- 27:16Speaker 2: say it's come completely out of left field because we
- 27:18Speaker 2: were discussing this a while ago that it may come
- 27:21Speaker 2: down to that new Pramak Yamaha alliance taking either Miguel
- 27:25Speaker 2: Oliver or Jack Miller because of their very similar sort
- 27:29Speaker 2: of career trajectories. I was actually really struck when I
- 27:31Speaker 2: did that story a little while ago on how similar
- 27:33Speaker 2: their careers have been in terms of number of races
- 27:35Speaker 2: and wins and multiple manufacturers and so on and so forth.
- 27:39Speaker 2: But will Jack get a stay of execution and will
- 27:43Speaker 2: they go with two experienced riders in that second team.
- 27:46Speaker 2: We know that right now that Yamaha is behind the
- 27:48Speaker 2: eight ball and they need all of the data they
- 27:51Speaker 2: can get, and the more data points they can get
- 27:53Speaker 2: from riders who've ridden different bikes I think is something
- 27:56Speaker 2: that benefits them in the short term. Now there's some
- 27:59Speaker 2: discussion that someone like Sergio Garcia, who's leading the Moto
- 28:02Speaker 2: two championship, might get squeezed out for the time being.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I think his time is going to come because he's
- 28:07Speaker 2: very good, we know that, and he's very young. For
- 28:10Speaker 2: what Yamaha need right now, it'll be cheaper to employ
- 28:14Speaker 2: a rookie and you'll bring someone through in the smaller
- 28:17Speaker 2: TV if you like. Potentially looking to elevate them up
- 28:19Speaker 2: in the future. Yamaha right now need experienced heads and
- 28:24Speaker 2: it wouldn't surprise me if they go with this all
- 28:27Speaker 2: experienced lineup, maybe only for a season, because you've got
- 28:30Speaker 2: a brand new team, a brand new bike. There's a
- 28:33Speaker 2: lot of moving parts there. Jack has experienced with Pramak
- 28:36Speaker 2: as we know from his decade days. It'd be great
- 28:39Speaker 2: to see him get another shot, and I think he'd
- 28:42Speaker 2: be the first to admit that on the basis of
- 28:45Speaker 2: what he's done in twenty twenty four, you could argue
- 28:47Speaker 2: that the results would suggest he doesn't deserve that other shot,
- 28:50Speaker 2: But there's a body of work with a number of
- 28:52Speaker 2: manufacturers over his career that to me makes him a
- 28:55Speaker 2: really good candidate for this role for a short term,
- 28:58Speaker 2: and then it's up to him as to what he
- 28:59Speaker 2: does with it. I mean he has if he gets
- 29:02Speaker 2: the pramahat suit, as you'd love to keep saying, if
- 29:04Speaker 2: he gets that and he does on that bike what
- 29:06Speaker 2: he's done this year, then you can pretty much write
- 29:07Speaker 2: him off after that, I would think. But there's certainly
- 29:10Speaker 2: a role there for him. But Jesus story has taken
- 29:13Speaker 2: a few twists and turns, hasn't it, Because it looked
- 29:15Speaker 2: like it was going to be track our Souprilia at
- 29:16Speaker 2: one point and then they went with another Motor two
- 29:19Speaker 2: rider unofficially at least that isn't Joe Roberts. So that
- 29:22Speaker 2: was a strange one. So, you know, the rider market
- 29:25Speaker 2: thing's been bubbling on now for what do we August
- 29:27Speaker 2: two and a half months. It's still not settled. Maybe
- 29:30Speaker 2: we get some more news about what Jack's doing for
- 29:32Speaker 2: twenty twenty five this weekend and there'll be a lot
- 29:35Speaker 2: of Australian fans.
- 29:36Speaker 3: I hope that he's on the grid.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Well, US Ozzie fans are hoping that he's on the grid.
- 29:41Speaker 1: But our ossies who are secure on the grid in
- 29:44Speaker 1: the lower classes is Sana Agis, which we reported on.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And then last weekend it was announced that Jacob Rulstone
- 29:50Speaker 1: has re signed with the Red Bull Gas Gas Tech
- 29:53Speaker 1: three Moto three team. So we're thrilled to see Jacob
- 29:57Speaker 1: once again and this season he's doing phenomenal for a
- 30:00Speaker 1: rookie year in Moto three and as we've spoke about previously,
- 30:05Speaker 1: but he's even said in the interview, you know he's
- 30:07Speaker 1: just aiming to get Rookie of the Year. I think
- 30:10Speaker 1: he's edging closer. We could possibly see him get that
- 30:13Speaker 1: podium and hopefully that's that Philip Island.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I did enjoy the segway there in Actually that was
- 30:18Speaker 2: very very smoothly done.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I did enjoy that, Thank you. But it's interesting, isn't it.
- 30:22Speaker 2: We've got all three of our assies in the feeder classes,
- 30:25Speaker 2: all locked away already for twenty twenty five and completely
- 30:28Speaker 2: on merit. And I think the thing we touched on
- 30:31Speaker 2: with Jacob when you spoke to him, there's such a
- 30:34Speaker 2: sort of inner calm and maturity with this kid. You
- 30:37Speaker 2: forget how young he is a lot of the time
- 30:39Speaker 2: because he's completely convinced he's doing the right thing, and
- 30:42Speaker 2: the way he approaches his riding and racing on and
- 30:45Speaker 2: off the track, he looks like a keeper, which is
- 30:48Speaker 2: great for Australia and if you're going to be in
- 30:51Speaker 2: Moto three, that's a very very good team to be
- 30:54Speaker 2: and it's got good backing Hervet Poncherral runs a really
- 30:56Speaker 2: good ship there, so he's.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Been super impressive.
- 30:59Speaker 2: It's only you know, the the last couple of rounds
- 31:01Speaker 2: where he had a DNF in Saxon Ring and then
- 31:03Speaker 2: he had that first lap incident at Silverston. It probably
- 31:05Speaker 2: shows you how good the rest of his season's been
- 31:08Speaker 2: because he's always in and around the top ten. He
- 31:09Speaker 2: started to qualify a bit better now, so really enjoying
- 31:12Speaker 2: what he's doing. And look, it's fantastic with half of
- 31:15Speaker 2: this season to go to know what Joe Kelso and
- 31:18Speaker 2: center Ageus and Jacob are doing for next year and
- 31:21Speaker 2: really positive signs for the young zy guys coming through.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Well, guys, And that's all the time we have for
