Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_06: This is the Flyer Show in podcast form from the Team of Flyer.
- 0:08SPEAKER_06: It's your weekly dose of general aviation, news, views, and flying chat.
- 0:11SPEAKER_06: In this episode, we look forward to Ashcrosh, plus just the usual observations, digressions, and opinions from the team.
- 0:17SPEAKER_06: If you like airplanes, airfields, airspace, and the world that surrounds them, you're in the right place.
- 0:22SPEAKER_06: Hello and welcome to this week's Flyer Show, where it is not quite a school show, but it's still pretty darn warm.
- 0:27SPEAKER_06: We're coming to you from Wadsworth, and my name is Ian Seeger, I'm Ed Hicks, and I'm Dave Corderwood.
- 0:31SPEAKER_06: Big big thanks to Sky Demon for supporting the show, and here is this week's top tip.
- 0:38SPEAKER_04: Hi, I'm Tim from Sky Demon.
- 0:40SPEAKER_04: Welcome to this week's Top Tip.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: You can connect Sky Demon to most autopilots or various other avionics such as a CDI or HSI via a Bluetooth to RS232 adapter like this one, in the same way that you can connect it to your radio to send frequencies.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Your radionics engineer will need to install whatever device you use in your aircraft and connect it to the avionics.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Then to set it up in Sky Demon, open the setup menu, choose Connectivity, then add Bluetooth device.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: If your device is turned on, you'll see it right away, so select it, give it a name if you like, then select autopilot here, so we know what's connected.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: Your avionics person might advise you to select only a few of the messages.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Below, but I'll leave it on all, then press save.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: Now whenever you're flying, or even if you simulate as I'm doing here, SkyDemon will connect to your device and send all the necessary data every second, which you can see it's doing from this green light.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: Your autopilot can use this to keep you on track, and the CDI or HSI can show you when you're off track.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: For our full user manual, go to skydemon.arero and choose help and support.
- 2:00SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 2:01SPEAKER_06: Autopilot, you can want your autopilot into Sky Demon.
- 2:04SPEAKER_06: If you're a certified aircraft, don't do that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_06: Don't do that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: Don't do that.
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: But it is, it's another remarkable thing about Sky Demon, isn't it?
- 2:10SPEAKER_06: You can drive it from your iPad, it's amazing.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, where some where some platforms don't they don't play outside of their own world?
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: Sky Demon is like the oasis of connectivity.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: Come and play with me.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 2:25SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 2:26SPEAKER_06: So thank you very much, Sky Demon.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: Um so uh obviously uh we've been blessed with really, really hot weather.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: Everything's looking a bit scorched earth now.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: Scorched all, a bit yellow.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: A bit yellow.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: Should we see what Simon has in store for us?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Evening all, I hope that this evening finds you well and rearing to go for the weekend.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is how things shape up for Friday morning.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: You can see we've got broken cloud across southern areas of the country, more cloud across Scotland, across northern parts of Ireland.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: And as the day progresses, yeah, there's always more cloud in southern Scotland and eastern parts of Ireland, but actually north and south.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: You can see some decent spells of sunshine as the cloud base uh breaks.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: 4,000 foot base, 10,000 foot tops fall on most, yeah, just that little line of cloud, perhaps bases of 3,000 feet tops again at 10,000 feet, but overall it's pretty fair.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Now, as we get in towards Saturday, the flow is going to be coming in from the north.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Notice here just one or two showers affecting northern Scotland and northeastern coast of England.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Most areas though are dry and fine and perfectly very farable.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Into the afternoon on Saturday, still got that northerly flow, and again, one or two showers affecting eastern coast, but overall it is fair, it's flyable all the way, and we're looking at bases of around three to four thousand feet in the tops at about 10 to 12,000 feet, up to 15,000 feet though, in the east.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Now, as we get in towards Sunday, that northerly flow is still with us.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Some cloud just running down the eastern coast, I think, on Sunday morning.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: It clears away for me staying here in the southeast during the afternoon, but always that tendency for areas exposed to that northerly wind to see more in the way of cloud.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Generally, though, it's a very horrible day.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Again, we're going to be looking at bases of around 4,000 feet and the tops at about 10,000 feet.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: It looks like being had a good weekend.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Check your forecast as carefully as always from official sources, but it's all pretty well straightforward.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, I will leave you with that for now.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Don't forget to get yourself to weatherschool.co.uk, get yourself booked onto Aviation Weather School Part 1, my next live online course, which is going to take place on the Tuesday evenings to the 15th and 22nd of September between 6 30pm and 9pm.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I will show you how to spot weather windows five days in advance.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I'll show you how you can better forecast things like cloud bases, cloud tops, the winds, visibility, weather, etc.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And I'll build your confidence in Met, taking you beyond the PPL and the ATPL as well to get you thinking weather.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I want you flying more.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I want you flying more safely.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Go and have a look at weatherschool.co.uk now and book your place.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll leave you with that for now.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: That was a quick and easy forecast, wasn't it?
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Whatever you do, have a great, have a safe flying weekend, and uh bye for now.
- 5:15SPEAKER_07: Did you know Simon's got a new book out?
- 5:16SPEAKER_07: You know, the instant weather uh classic guide, the one which shows all the clouds.
- 5:21SPEAKER_07: He's updated it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_07: New book out.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Simon Sky Cloud Atlas.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: Excellent.
- 5:26SPEAKER_06: Jolly good job.
- 5:27SPEAKER_06: Jolly good job.
- 5:28SPEAKER_06: Should we we've got a pack show today.
- 5:30SPEAKER_06: Should we should we should we get on with it?
- 5:32SPEAKER_07: Canter into the news.
- 5:33SPEAKER_07: Yes, full speed, I think.
- 5:35SPEAKER_07: Well, big news this week.
- 5:37SPEAKER_07: Cantering.
- 5:38SPEAKER_07: As well, it's been big news every week for the last few weeks.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: But big news this week is that the mandatory electronic conspicuity is definitely on the table.
- 5:46SPEAKER_07: The CA has launched a consultation uh and uh it it will runs it ran from yesterday, uh yesterday actually, right through to the 22nd of September.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: Basically, all aircraft flying below 10,000 feet will probably have to have some form of electronic conspicuity.
- 6:00SPEAKER_06: Um I don't think it's some form, is it?
- 6:03SPEAKER_06: Well it has to be ADSB, yes.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: It has to be ADSB, yeah.
- 6:07SPEAKER_06: Okay, it's a consultation.
- 6:08SPEAKER_06: So who knows the outcome, except we all know the outcome, don't we?
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: They've decided already, clearly.
- 6:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 6:14SPEAKER_07: And yeah, so the comment the the comments which are being sought are on which aircraft are included, uh, how if we introduced, the costs of compliance, and transition period.
- 6:24SPEAKER_07: Among the comments we've heard already is that this is all purely for the drone industry, so they shall pay for any costs.
- 6:31SPEAKER_07: Good luck with that one, I think.
- 6:32SPEAKER_07: Um and somebody pointed out that antenna location is vital for uh electronic conspicuous.
- 6:38SPEAKER_07: Some portable units, solutions, are less than perfect due to shielding.
- 6:44SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, no, for sure.
- 6:45SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_07: And another comment I heard was that this chap who's a project engineer, he said, uh, I think the DFT, Department for Transport, and the CAA are completely underestimating the complexity of the task.
- 6:57SPEAKER_07: The number of stakeholders, the complexity of the equipment, and the lack of experience among uh drone operators means two years is wholly inadequate.
- 7:06SPEAKER_07: Five five will barely be adequate.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: But maybe it will all take place in the world of the sandbox where speedy progress is guaranteed.
- 7:17SPEAKER_07: Well, it's all they've been testing in the sandbox and I think they're ready to well, the drone industry thinks they're ready to roll it out.
- 7:23SPEAKER_07: They're chafing at the bit, aren't they?
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: The drone industry really uh d I I don't think they've ever uh ever really experienced the steady pace of regular fixed-wing certification and procedures and things like that, have they?
- 7:37SPEAKER_06: No, I think it I think the two different worlds are worlds apart.
- 7:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_06: As it were.
- 7:41SPEAKER_07: When we say drone, of course, we are talking about beyond visual line of sight, rather than just some chap setting up his uh camera drone.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: I mean this is all for the the the the multi-billion dollar industry, isn't it?
- 7:53SPEAKER_06: That um that is you know drones uh autonomously operating and get your joke robber doctor delivered to your back garden in less than an hour.
- 8:02SPEAKER_06: That's what it's all about.
- 8:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 8:03SPEAKER_07: Well it's very clear from what's come out before that a DFT had told the CEA to get on with it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_07: This is a big industry, has potentially lots of benefits, um, so they're just getting on with it.
- 8:13SPEAKER_07: And there's no other way, really, if you think about it, that uh drones can operate, can integrate into airspace without some form of electronic conspicuity.
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: Well, I think so I think if you if you take a step back, it it is it's a it's a it is drones, but it's a bigger thing because it's about the lower airspace being the the the future of the airspace in the UK, of which drones, uh EV toll taxis, and beyond visual line of sight drones will play a potentially huge part if everyone if those numbers come true.
- 8:44SPEAKER_06: I'm not sure they will, but uh that's that's what's being planned for.
- 8:47SPEAKER_06: So the CA solution is right, we all we need some form of electronic conspicuousity below 10,000 feet.
- 8:53SPEAKER_06: Should apply to all aircraft, but it's not quite clear what the definition of aircraft is.
- 8:58SPEAKER_06: Um does that include every every drone that you buy as a as a sub-249 kilogram drone?
- 9:05SPEAKER_06: I d I don't know.
- 9:06SPEAKER_06: I suspect not, but who who knows?
- 9:08SPEAKER_06: Um and I think if you are 140 knots or less, and again, 100 operating speed is called 140 knots.
- 9:16SPEAKER_06: Now that's there are different ways of defining operating speed, and that's not clearly defined in there.
- 9:24SPEAKER_06: Um but effectively 104 I'm I'm taking that as if you're flying at 140 knots, you could buy a Cirrus and never fly above 140 knots, for example.
- 9:33SPEAKER_06: Um it's a funny note though.
- 9:36SPEAKER_06: Um because I think speed is going to define some of the accuracy levels of so below 140 knots, indicated airspeed, this is not ground speed, um then you'll be able to potentially you'll be able to use a cap 1391, uh which is things like Sky Echo, but it has to be SIL 1 and SDA1, which are kind of the two standards in there.
- 9:59SPEAKER_06: Um and there is the thing that's mentioned in there of some kind of testing because you're you're right, depending on how you mount those things, something like Sky Echo doesn't have an external area.
- 10:08SPEAKER_06: So if you're mounting it in front of some big people and behind a big chunky engine, you might not have you know it it's installation dependent.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: So you can potentially do that, and some people will potentially be already equipped.
- 10:21SPEAKER_06: They go, I've got this, I'm doing it SBI, I've got no problem, thank you very much.
- 10:24SPEAKER_06: I'm SDA1, I'm still one, fish bash rush, I'm done.
- 10:27SPEAKER_06: Um and this is this is above that, and and aircraft will have to put out a 1090, by the way.
- 10:35SPEAKER_06: Um so aircraft above 140 knots will need the full-on um modest extended square transponder and approved GPS source.
- 10:45SPEAKER_06: Um so talking we spoke I spoke briefly about services earlier, they'll all have that already.
- 10:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:51SPEAKER_06: Um whereas obviously a lot of other people might need to equip.
- 10:54SPEAKER_06: I mean, the other thing is if someone needs to equip and wants to carry on flying their aircraft at above 140 knots and they're not already equipped, then in two years there's going to be an awful lot of cues at avionics installation bases and people supplying supplying mode SES extended squitter transponders because you need more than just a mode S transponder and an approved GPS source.
- 11:15SPEAKER_06: I think a lot of people have the approved GPS source.
- 11:17SPEAKER_06: Um a bunch of people are talking about um the Europeans and ADSL they're they're game for ADSL L.
- 11:27SPEAKER_06: ADS ATSL.
- 11:31SPEAKER_06: Um that's a a light thing expected for or designed for general aviation aircraft at a lower cost.
- 11:39SPEAKER_06: Um and it's a kind of it's it's a common platform, um, but it will be put out on a on a non-licensed frequency and possibly on 4G and 5G and other frequencies.
- 11:49SPEAKER_06: It's supposed to mix a whole load of things.
- 11:51SPEAKER_06: It will still be its own format, um, but that's the way they're doing that.
- 11:55SPEAKER_06: So that that will be a divergence that EASR are developing that at the moment.
- 11:58SPEAKER_06: That'll be a divergence from the UK and Europe, which will also bring up potential problems in the future if a European GA aircraft wants to fly into the UK, or even if a UK aircraft wants to fly into specific areas in Europe.
- 12:11SPEAKER_07: It strikes me this has to be an international world by standard.
- 12:16SPEAKER_06: Well, the w the international world by standard today is ADSB.
- 12:19SPEAKER_06: And there's no doubt about that right now.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: Um I I think the drone people might go, hang on a minute, hang on a minute.
- 12:25SPEAKER_06: We want we want to manufacture 100,000 drones a second, and you know, we want ADSL or we want ADSB, you know, give us tell us what it is.
- 12:33SPEAKER_06: So I think that'll be it's always a little bit strange when someone goes, hang on a second, you see our little corner of the world, we're gonna do something different to everybody else here.
- 12:42SPEAKER_06: But it's not quite everybody else, because the US is oh it is a tricky, yeah tricky problem that needs resolving.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: And it's fair to say that this consultation probably is one of the most important things that a pilot or uh, you know, an airspace user can get involved and give your opinion on.
- 13:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:03SPEAKER_06: I mean and it it's quite a chunky consultation.
- 13:08SPEAKER_06: So uh you know, we haven't finished reading through every single line of it and analysing it.
- 13:12SPEAKER_06: So there'll be more on this at some point in the future, without a doubt.
- 13:16SPEAKER_06: Um but it it that that's the initial thing.
- 13:19SPEAKER_06: The other thing that I thought was quite interesting and a lot of people have commented on is the m what's being mandated is the fact that you have ADSB out or what will sorry, not what's being mandated, what will potentially be mandated on the depending on the outcome of the consultation.
- 13:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, right.
- 13:34SPEAKER_06: Um is that it'll be ADSB out.
- 13:38SPEAKER_06: There's no mandate for ADSB in.
- 13:39SPEAKER_06: So in theory, and this won't be like this won't be out.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: Everyone will go, here you go, have my signal, see where we're but no one will be out should be able to see anyone because they haven't spent the money on ADSBN.
- 13:48SPEAKER_06: I think frankly, if there's an ADSB out mandate, then people should be able to find a way of getting ADSB in.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: There are some very low-cost solutions for getting ADSB in.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: Um Pilotware, not mentioned in the in the consultation at all.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: No.
- 14:06SPEAKER_06: Um FLAM, that's that's good.
- 14:07SPEAKER_06: I mean FLAM is electronic obsequity but has a very specialized niche and does that really, really well.
- 14:14SPEAKER_06: Um but but at least in the consultation, pilotware or FLAM will not meet the requirement.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:22SPEAKER_06: Um so yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 14:24SPEAKER_07: We'll put a link to the consultation so you can have a look at it for yourself.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Yes, absolutely.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 14:31SPEAKER_05: Uh so uh Slapekosh News, uh the uh the UK's biggest uh fly-in festival.
- 14:37SPEAKER_05: Um the organizers of SleepKosh 2026 are saying it's their been their biggest year yet.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: Uh anyone want to take a guess on numbers?
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Well, certainly lots.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: Numbers of war.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: Uh three thousand they're saying they had three thousand people and seven hundred aircraft attending.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: And uh obviously they had uh fantastic weather.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, in the run-up to and during the event and afterwards.
- 15:04SPEAKER_05: Uh that will really help an event like that, won't it?
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Two days of air show ending with airborne pyrotechnics, uh um so a bunch of fireworks, a big selection of war birds.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: Um Slatecosh has also become a really big spot for uh trade stands as well, with over 40 of those attending.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: Um Shropshire Era Club said the evenings were filled with laughter, dancing, two nights of live music, and the England football game.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: I'm not sure they had any influence on England winning.
- 15:33SPEAKER_05: Maybe Slatecosh has that power.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: Um and also an ever-flowing bar and a great group of like-minded and fun people.
- 15:41SPEAKER_05: Off the back of this success, um, there's been the big news that Slaycosh 2027 is going to be four days next year.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: That's I mean that suddenly becomes the UK's biggest duration event, doesn't it?
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: So Friday to Monday, is that all Thursday?
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: No, Thursday.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: So 8th to the 11th of July, they're saying four days.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: That's a you know, that's getting into Aero territory or Oshkosh territory.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, looking forward to seeing that.
- 16:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:10SPEAKER_06: Well, so I heard I heard a rumour that it's going to change its name, but I don't think it's statutory.
- 16:14SPEAKER_06: I think you made that up.
- 16:15SPEAKER_06: To smelkosh.
- 16:16SPEAKER_06: To smelkosh.
- 16:18SPEAKER_06: Because there was some issue with water on the site.
- 16:21SPEAKER_06: So uh a couple of people I know who went, I couldn't go because I was at PTL Manchester.
- 16:24SPEAKER_06: Um a couple of people went and said, Yeah, no showers for a couple of days.
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: Hence the new name.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 16:31SPEAKER_06: I'm sure they'll get that fixed.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: I'm sure, yeah.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: I'm a great team at Slate, you know, highly motivated, and definitely, you know, that they're gonna make that perfection, aren't they?
- 16:41SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: Uh it if you've got some money hanging around, you might be interested in an auction.
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: Uh Kirkbride Airfield is upsell, former World War II uh REF base, but 160 acres, uh mixture of runways, some of them good, some of them a little bit grassy, a couple of buildings, some deretic, some not deretic.
- 17:02SPEAKER_06: The uh auctioneers are talking about all sorts of potential up there, up in the late district.
- 17:07SPEAKER_06: So that's a well, sort of late district.
- 17:09SPEAKER_06: 1.5 million is the guide price on that.
- 17:12SPEAKER_06: That seems amazingly, amazingly good value, doesn't it?
- 17:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, 168.
- 17:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 17:16SPEAKER_06: I mean, I suspect that wouldn't be the end of the money that you would spend.
- 17:20SPEAKER_06: Do you think?
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Buying an airfield is not a continuous money pill.
- 17:24SPEAKER_06: No, it's not a I'm gonna buy this, it's just gonna generate me just income.
- 17:29SPEAKER_06: Non-stop income.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I know.
- 17:31SPEAKER_06: I didn't even have to get out of bed.
- 17:32SPEAKER_06: The money just like it's watched my bank account and go up and up and up.
- 17:35SPEAKER_06: It's just like aviation publishing.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, there's a link in the uh video description if you fancy buying Kirk Bride.
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 17:47SPEAKER_07: Any of us ever flown into Kurt Bride?
- 17:49SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 17:49SPEAKER_06: Yes, I was flying up with Ed, we're flying up to uh Enforcer.
- 17:54SPEAKER_05: Enforcer, yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_06: And uh has the the further north we got, the more obvious it became that I needed a pee.
- 18:03SPEAKER_06: A diversion was required.
- 18:05SPEAKER_06: Where can I get it?
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, quick radio call.
- 18:10SPEAKER_07: Well, talking of needing a pee, there's a couple of pilots who have just flown uh flex wing microlites from from uh the UK to uh to Iceland.
- 18:19SPEAKER_07: Uh a big long trip, especially the second leg from uh Vega on the Faroes to uh to the Iceland airport I can't pronounce.
- 18:27SPEAKER_07: You're in Iceland.
- 18:28SPEAKER_07: Eagle stuff has got that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Yes, close enough.
- 18:32SPEAKER_07: Anyway, earlier today we uh we spoke I spoke to them uh on the on WhatsApp.
- 18:36SPEAKER_07: We managed to get WhatsApp working on a laptop and uh technology.
- 18:40SPEAKER_07: And anyway, here it is, is what they had to say.
- 18:42SPEAKER_07: So you've you made it to Iceland in your open cockpit flex wing microlites?
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: We did, yes.
- 18:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_07: How how how was the flight?
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we started in Dean Thorpe on it was uh it was the Monday um a week ago.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: We've got sort of 35-40 mile an hour headwinds to get up to at least fortune.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: But we got there in the end, didn't we?
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: The next stop was open, and we refilled it over, and then it was up to stone away.
- 19:13SPEAKER_07: The really difficult bit started at stone away.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we we've still got quite a bit to do, haven't we?
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Uh at stone away and sort of kit that we wear over land and then kit that we've wear for the water crossings.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we have to swap all that up, we get all that out, pack the other bits away.
- 19:32SPEAKER_07: So you flew from stone away to the Faroe Islands, yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: The worry with um Vega on the on the Faroe Islands is always the approach, uh, because it's renowned for having quite strong turbines, and and also it gets fogged in um you know very quickly and unpredictably.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: So you wonder what what you're gonna get when you get there.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Um, but it was to be honest, it was stunning.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Um we did the waterfall approach onto runway 3-0, the turbulence coming into land, um, yeah, there was a bit, but nothing that we've not dealt with in the past.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: So it it was it was it was fantastic actually.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:19SPEAKER_07: So, but the real big trip was from Vega across the North Atlantic to Iceland to an airport which I'm struggling to pronounce, Egglstjara.
- 20:30SPEAKER_07: Close enough, something like that.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that turned out to be a lot longer than even we were predicting.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, I mean, it was supposed to take what about four and a half hours.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but when we got sort of a hundred miles or within a hundred miles of Iceland itself, the wind really picked up and it swung round more than it should have done.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: And we were battling into a 25 mile an hour headwind for the last sort of 100 miles.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: And when you're only flying at sort of 80 miles an hour anyway, that really makes a massive difference to the time en route.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: And it ended up taking us just short of five and a half hours, that leg of constantly flying across the sea with nothing much to see at all, and then it was clouded over, so you couldn't see the ground at all for a long while.
- 21:23SPEAKER_07: So five and a half hours in in a microlight, an open cockpit micro light, um, you've not got a lot of space to to do anything there.
- 21:31SPEAKER_07: If you have to eat, drink, or have a comfort break.
- 21:34SPEAKER_07: How'd you cope?
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: Um, well, we've always got a little bag with some snacks and things just near our feet so that we can just grab something.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: Um, and you're reasonably sheltered if you sort of keep yourself tucked in behind the screen.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: And we've always got a little bottle of water or something down there as well.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: You just have to be really careful, you don't drop it.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the thing with the with.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: The tribes and a pusher prop, you're very aware that if anything gets loose, it's going through the prop.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, you're very careful that everything's tied down and secure, and and and even when you're moving around uh to try and get your snacks, um you know, that goes through my mind quite a lot.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: I think I had a toppy Chris and a packet of biscuits.
- 22:30SPEAKER_07: Now, of course, you're only halfway through the whole trip because you've got to fly home as well.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: We have indeed, yeah.
- 22:37SPEAKER_07: You're looking forward to it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: The weather at the moment, I mean, it's properly windy here and very bright outside, which is why we're facing the way we're facing because um the dust has all kicked up again.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: It's got really windy.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but apart from that, the weather tomorrow is looking really good.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: The wind swung round, and we should be starting the homeward journey Thursday morning.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Um, that's the plan at the moment.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Uh we should have a decent tailwind to get us back to the pharaohs.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: And if it's as good as predicted and we get away early enough, we may even do the second leg back to Scotland tomorrow as well.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: We are looking at trying to get it back to WIC rather than short away this time around.
- 23:27SPEAKER_07: So you the pair of you look quite normal.
- 23:30SPEAKER_07: So, what's possessed you to do this crazy flight?
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Um possible question.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well we are out raising money for prostate cancer UK.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: The money has been dribbling in.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Um, we're I think we're up to about three and a half thousand at the minute.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: So you know, if you've been watching us along uh the way and uh you've been thinking about doing it and waiting till we've actually got here or something, now's the time, really.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: It is uh without sounding like Bob Geldoth.
- 24:03SPEAKER_07: Um good luck for your return flight, and uh we'll speak to you when you get back.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: So by the time you watch this, they may well be either on their way home or have landed uh somewhere in Scotland um after after coming from the place that Dave couldn't pronounce.
- 24:19SPEAKER_05: That is that's in a flex wing, though, that is uh that's an epic trip.
- 24:23SPEAKER_05: I know people often say epic trip, but um I've uh hats off to them.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: Doing that in a flex wing.
- 24:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:29SPEAKER_07: Could you imagine a flex wing?
- 24:30SPEAKER_07: There's nowhere to put anything.
- 24:32SPEAKER_07: And you didn't have to be.
- 24:33SPEAKER_05: No, snacks, you know, snacks, in cockpit, you know, comforts and things like that.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: Lifting yourself up a bit, no wriggling.
- 24:41SPEAKER_07: And of course, since they're flying over the North Atlantic, they're both wearing those those up-to-the-neck suits of rubber things that uh emergent suits.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: I guess at least you've got a nice cooling breeze.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: It won't be getting they won't be getting hot.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: That's that's true.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: I tried to do a photo shoot once, a gazillion years ago, from a flex wing.
- 24:57SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 24:58SPEAKER_06: It was I I've I, the first thing I thought, okay, I can't put the camera close enough because I had a big visor.
- 25:02SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 25:03SPEAKER_06: I couldn't actually see what was going on.
- 25:05SPEAKER_06: So that I'll lift the visor up and that was that instant streaming light.
- 25:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that was that wouldn't make a doesn't make a great camera ship.
- 25:14SPEAKER_06: No.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: No.
- 25:16SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 25:16SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: Me.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: Um some side news.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: Um Metal Seagulls, which if you're uh if you're in the UK home building world for sure, um you will have come across, they are to close uh in following what they're calling a structured winding down.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: Uh Pembrokeshire-based light aircraft engineering specialists, uh Metal Seagulls, they will close their hangar uh operations later this summer, bringing an end to almost 11 years of doing what they've been doing, uh supporting home builders, uh aircraft owners, and manufacturers.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: Uh the window is voluntary, unsolvent, they're saying, and flying activities are expected to cease at the end of August before the business is wound down in the following months.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: So uh that's really quite sad.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: Since its formation in 2016 and move to have a Vidres in 2021, Metal Seagars has built a good reputation for um specialist metalwork, CNC machine parts, uh, and all sorts of other bits and pieces for home-built aircraft.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: And also they've been uh the agent for UL power engines in the UK and Zenair.
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: So um I'm guessing that those those particular things will need to find new people.
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: New homes, yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_06: And talking of which, there's some there's some uh machinery and equipment and stuff that they're they're selling.
- 26:29SPEAKER_06: So if you're interested in that, that will also need a new home.
- 26:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, a whole bunch of quite heavy grade equipment.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, not sort of desktop level, but um major stuff.
- 26:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah, there's an English wheel up there as well in that list.
- 26:43SPEAKER_07: I wish I could use an English wheel.
- 26:44SPEAKER_07: I'd love to.
- 26:45SPEAKER_05: That would be like the my definitive skill.
- 26:47SPEAKER_05: You could get one instead of watching TV, you could get one and like just wheel away my evening.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: That's it, yeah.
- 26:53SPEAKER_07: Very therapeutic, I should imagine.
- 26:55SPEAKER_06: I should imagine it'd be for me, it wouldn't be it would be more frustrating.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: Why isn't this the shape that I want?
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: I'm thinking of this shape, but it's not doing it.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: I think it often look you often look at people using an English wheel, and it's like maybe they're just going, oh, well, that can be a so-and-so.
- 27:13SPEAKER_07: It's a bit like 3D printed parts, isn't it?
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: I think much easier.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: I think that's much easier.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:21SPEAKER_07: Anyway, Blackbush Airport is getting a rebrand, and here it is.
- 27:25SPEAKER_07: Run to the video.
- 27:27SPEAKER_07: The the video shows this stylized bee, which is going to be their new logo, bee for Blackbush.
- 27:32SPEAKER_07: And apparently Amazing.
- 27:34SPEAKER_07: Apparently it comes out in the Well they came up with that.
- 27:36SPEAKER_07: But also it comes out apparently, some clever designers looked at the original layout of the air for from above.
- 27:42SPEAKER_07: And it looks like a giant bee?
- 27:43SPEAKER_07: It looks like a giant bee, or he's managed to, you know, or she has managed to produce one.
- 27:47SPEAKER_07: Um anyway, I taught I we did a quick word with Chris Gazard, who's the uh manager there.
- 27:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 27:52SPEAKER_07: And he was very keen to emphasise that pilots and aircraft owners uh will see little difference, little difference operationally.
- 27:58SPEAKER_07: It looked very smart, of course, but uh they'll still receive the same friendly welcome, the same professional service, and the same commitment to GA that Blackbush has always been known for.
- 28:08SPEAKER_06: And more hangers.
- 28:09SPEAKER_07: More hangers, yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_07: Big investment going in on new hangers.
- 28:12SPEAKER_07: Looks very smart, actually, copper and black.
- 28:14SPEAKER_07: Are they new colours?
- 28:15SPEAKER_06: Fantastic.
- 28:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, totally good.
- 28:17SPEAKER_06: It's great to see, it's actually great to see because that land must be worth a tidy penny where it is.
- 28:22SPEAKER_06: I would say so.
- 28:23SPEAKER_06: And it must be doing so.
- 28:24SPEAKER_06: So it's great to see investment going into that.
- 28:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 28:26SPEAKER_06: Good job.
- 28:27SPEAKER_06: Good job.
- 28:27SPEAKER_06: Good job, Blackbush.
- 28:29SPEAKER_06: Um, right, so just a little small bit of news.
- 28:31SPEAKER_06: Uh Lightspeed, the headset people.
- 28:33SPEAKER_06: You remember they came out of the Delta Zulu and said we're gonna be able to upgrade the firmware, hardware, software.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's their headset that detects carbon monoxide, isn't it?
- 28:42SPEAKER_06: Yes, it is indeed.
- 28:43SPEAKER_06: Well, they are soon to launch a very your very own profile.
- 28:49SPEAKER_06: If you fly behind a Rotex engine, the ANR profile has changed.
- 28:54SPEAKER_06: So you'll be able to get better AR when you're flying behind a Rotax with your light speed delta zoom.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: That kind of makes sense because the the acoustic signatures and things of a Rotax must be quite different because it's higher RPM, gearbox, and all of that.
- 29:08SPEAKER_05: You go.
- 29:09SPEAKER_06: One day you're flying a DC3 and the next day you're flying a rotax, you want different profiles, don't you?
- 29:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_06: I'm guessing.
- 29:15SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 29:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: And you know, I I know some people might go, oh, that's not very newsy, is it?
- 29:20SPEAKER_05: But you go, at least uh that's that's a headset manufacturer out there continually evolving and improving their uh their product.
- 29:26SPEAKER_06: Which is what both said they were going to do when they launched the A30.
- 29:29SPEAKER_07: And I don't think they have.
- 29:31SPEAKER_06: No, they haven't.
- 29:32SPEAKER_06: No.
- 29:33SPEAKER_07: So does this light speed headset, does it detect the difference itself?
- 29:36SPEAKER_06: No, you look at I suspect you load the profile through the app you've got.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like I have noted.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: Hello, Dave, I've noted that you're flying a rotex.
- 29:45SPEAKER_06: It's an AI headset.
- 29:47SPEAKER_06: It's AI.
- 29:47SPEAKER_06: Well, no, it isn't.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: It isn't.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: But I mean that'll be the next thing, won't it?
- 29:50SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 29:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: So the other news that we're closing with is the fact that Flyer, and more importantly, Ian Seeger has won an award.
- 30:00SPEAKER_06: More importantly, Flyer.
- 30:04SPEAKER_06: I was awarded it, but it's really about Flyer and PCL, Pilot Career's life.
- 30:08SPEAKER_06: It was the Scott Farney Medal for uh work that's been done on spreading the word and education in in German aviation.
- 30:14SPEAKER_06: So we've been doing this for like 32 years now.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Why um and PCL for not much less than that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_06: So there's been a whole bunch of stuff.
- 30:22SPEAKER_06: So it was great to pop up to the old house of Lords to get a medal like that.
- 30:25SPEAKER_06: Tim Peak wrote the accommodation, that was quite good.
- 30:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_06: Why?
- 30:29SPEAKER_06: Annabelle wanted to know whether I touched him or not, and go, no, I didn't.
- 30:32SPEAKER_06: You just touched him.
- 30:37SPEAKER_06: But yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_06: No, it was good.
- 30:39SPEAKER_06: But it is it is for for the for the team, past and present, because there's a lot of an awful lot of work that's gone into that over the last 32 years by an awful lot of people.
- 30:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 30:47SPEAKER_06: And it continues to happen, which is a good reason for you to join the flyer club.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: I was looking at who'd sorry, I was looking at who'd won it before.
- 30:55SPEAKER_06: Two names that I instantly recognized out.
- 30:57SPEAKER_06: There was Derek Piggott.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, wow.
- 30:59SPEAKER_06: Gliding gliding legend.
- 31:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: And John Farley.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's that's rather that's a that's almost that's a nice bit of serendipity there.
- 31:08SPEAKER_06: That's what I thought, yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_06: He did a lot of he did a lot of educational stuff, John Farley.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: And obviously Mega contributor to Flyer in the documentary.
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 31:16SPEAKER_07: So um I remember his advice, John Farley's advice for going for a medical, don't tell the doctor anything.
- 31:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_07: It's up to him to find it.
- 31:23SPEAKER_06: It's their job to find it, yeah, absolutely.
- 31:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I remember I remember asking John a question once.
- 31:29SPEAKER_06: I can't remember what it was about.
- 31:30SPEAKER_06: It was I think it was something like gyroscopics and engines and aircraft in a spin or something like that.
- 31:35SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: It was about three three hours later, because he had to just can continuously simplify what he was saying before I could actually understand it.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: It started off as like, I don't get that, John.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: It's like, no, John, it's this, but simpler.
- 31:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah, come here, but simpler.
- 31:51SPEAKER_07: Good.
- 31:51SPEAKER_07: Well, club news, Dave.
- 31:52SPEAKER_07: Club news, yes, July landing fees, Tibinham, Longside, East Kirkby, and Redford Gamson.
- 31:58SPEAKER_07: That could save you 50 quid, which uh is quite a good saving.
- 32:01SPEAKER_07: Um Annabelle, who runs our landing fees, says, if you're going to any of these places flying in, uh take photos, take videos, let us have them so we can share it with uh with other readers and other people.
- 32:14SPEAKER_06: But even more than the free landing fees, when you become a member of the Fly Club, apart from becoming a member of the best aviation club in the UK, you get full access to everything we produce online, you get full you get access to our Skystream on a Wednesday afternoon, you get full access to the forum and posting on the forum, you get you get much, much more than the landing fees.
- 32:33SPEAKER_06: You get the whole package.
- 32:34SPEAKER_06: So just join six quid a month,£72 a year.
- 32:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 32:37SPEAKER_06: So or even£62 a year.
- 32:39SPEAKER_06: Or even£62.
- 32:40SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 32:40SPEAKER_06: I I knew that was wrong when I said it.
- 32:42SPEAKER_05: That's a tight.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: Take advantage of the this discounted real price.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there you go.
- 32:50SPEAKER_06: And it's probably a good time to mention that during the month of August we will be taking the month off.
- 32:55SPEAKER_06: The the flyer show.
- 32:56SPEAKER_06: There's lots of other stuff we're doing.
- 32:57SPEAKER_06: We're not all going on holiday for a month.
- 32:59SPEAKER_06: Um, lots of other stuff.
- 33:00SPEAKER_06: We're beginning organising a fly in, so watch out for announcing for the news of that fairly soon.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: Um, but so next week there's no show because we're in Oshkosh.
- 33:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:10SPEAKER_06: And the week after that there's a show, which is kind of Oshkosh roundup at another.
- 33:14SPEAKER_06: End of the yeah, end of July, isn't it?
- 33:16SPEAKER_06: End of July.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: And then we're then then August is a little bit of a break.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: And then back in September.
- 33:21SPEAKER_06: We'll be spring cleaning the flyer show.
- 33:23SPEAKER_06: We'll be we might change a few things.
- 33:25SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 33:26SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 33:26SPEAKER_06: News to me.
- 33:27SPEAKER_06: I know.
- 33:28SPEAKER_06: I'm doing a Christian Christian Drees.
- 33:30SPEAKER_06: Christian Dries.
- 33:32SPEAKER_06: Oh, we'll be bringing a uh whatever it is that he was.
- 33:35SPEAKER_06: A space shuttle tilt rotor.
- 33:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Christian Dries Musk of Austria.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: If you if you've missed that little reference, uh Ian's talking about Christian Drees, who used to be the boss of Diamond, who used to scare his handlers because at press conferences they'd be like, what's he going to say?
- 33:51SPEAKER_05: What's going to go?
- 33:53SPEAKER_06: You'd say something, you'd look at the back of the room, and they're all going, Oh, how are we going to make that happen?
- 33:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:59SPEAKER_05: Amazing.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: Exciting stuff.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, but we'll we'll be around and about during August.
- 34:04SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 34:07SPEAKER_06: The theme of this show is Oshkosh.
- 34:10SPEAKER_06: Oshkrosh preview.
- 34:11SPEAKER_06: Before we move on to the Oshkrosh preview, I'd like to say a huge, huge, huge thank you to Sirius, Continental Aerospace Technologists and Hartzel Propeller who are sponsoring our coverage at Oshkrosh this year.
- 34:22SPEAKER_06: It really, really, really wouldn't be possible without them.
- 34:24SPEAKER_06: No.
- 34:24SPEAKER_06: Um, basically getting people to Oshkosh, housing people, feeding people, etc., etc.
- 34:31SPEAKER_06: Not to mention everyone working their socks off from about seven in the morning, although Ed starts earlier until about eight or nine at night, is is bloody hard work.
- 34:39SPEAKER_06: I'm not looking for sympathy, but it is hard.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: But it's Oshkosh and we love it.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: It's Oshkosh and we love it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: But we couldn't, we definitely couldn't do it without our supporters.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: So thank you to uh to Cirus, Hartzall, and Continental.
- 34:50SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 34:51SPEAKER_06: And if you would like to support us next year, get in touch with our commercial department.
- 34:56SPEAKER_06: Anyway, moving on.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: So uh and lots of uh big new airplane announcements, some of which we talked in our giant news show, the giant news show last week.
- 35:06SPEAKER_06: The one Dave missed.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: The one Dave missed.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Um so uh obviously, so it's first public showing of the uh Cubcrafter's Carbon Cub ULT, the fantastic turbine.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Um so uh looking forward to seeing that.
- 35:19SPEAKER_06: The ULT part of that name.
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: I know what it stands for and why they've done it, but I'm not sure.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, it's it's not a great name, is it?
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: No.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: No.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: Out of all the things they did, it's like, come on, Cubcrafters could have made a better name.
- 35:30SPEAKER_05: But anyway, you know, that's a small detail.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: Um so that looking forward to seeing that.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: Obviously, Cirrus will have their track 10 trainer to show.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: I'm really excited to see that.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, me too.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: I got yeah, I think that'll be a good one Yeah, just because we haven't seen a new trainer in a long time, a really new new trainer.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Um excitement from TechNam.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: We don't know what we don't know what they're going to show, and they're beginning to tease it, and they've had had some videos going it's luxury redefined.
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: So and so we don't know, they're going to launch something, we don't know what it is.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: You've got a thought, haven't you?
- 36:07SPEAKER_06: Well, yes, so yesterday they sent out a thing saying you know this is what what some of our partners think of it.
- 36:13SPEAKER_06: And there was a a series of people who work for Continental Aerospace Technologies, one of our sponsors, thank you very much.
- 36:20SPEAKER_06: But we don't have any inside information on this, honestly.
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: Um and they were all sitting there, you know, being videoed and going, oh my god, that's amazing.
- 36:27SPEAKER_06: Oh, that looks real luxury.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's someone said it's like an Italian sports car.
- 36:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there was they were basically being enthusiastic about it.
- 36:36SPEAKER_06: Now, putting two and two together, yes, I don't think it takes a great mathematician to figure out the the fact that Continental were all talking about it is that whatever it is is gonna be powered by a continental.
- 36:47SPEAKER_06: So I was thinking what what could that be and what gap could they be going for?
- 36:50SPEAKER_06: Because you know um TechNAM are big, big RoTAX users.
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: So I don't think personally this is gonna be uh an LSA with an O200 in.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: I wouldn't no, it's not gonna be that.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: So it's got to be one of the bigger continental engines.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: It wouldn't be one of their Jet A powered engines or one of the bigger continental engines.
- 37:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and that's you've got a theory on this, haven't you?
- 37:13SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean i if so Technam, a whole they started off, but they used to be really well known for microlites, and they got into the LSA market, and they got the the Rotax twin, and then they got the big the four-seater the the the four-seat uh single, the P2010, uh which is available with the diesel engine or with uh a Continental engine.
- 37:36SPEAKER_06: Um diesel or like homing, maybe?
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: Is it?
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah, dieseling.
- 37:40SPEAKER_06: Diesel Aura Lycoming, I got it one wrong.
- 37:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:43SPEAKER_06: Um and then you've got the bigger twin, the 2012.
- 37:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, which is big big.
- 37:47SPEAKER_06: Which is big big.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: And incidentally, uh I don't know if you know, but technology started their own airline in Italy.
- 37:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, little regional airline, it's a perfect aircraft, they say.
- 37:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: Um people must aircraft manufacturers must look around, particularly Oshgroft and other basics.
- 38:05SPEAKER_06: Cirrus, they they that is the best.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: Um and and they're not Cirrus aircraft are not sold on low cost.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: No.
- 38:12SPEAKER_06: Um hasn't hindered their sales.
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: No.
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: Um so I'm wondering whether some combination of a bigger engine, a mosaic, and a uh a different version of the P2010 or something, maybe with a lower wing or something.
- 38:25SPEAKER_06: Which I don't know.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: I am just guessing.
- 38:27SPEAKER_05: I know I know nothing about this.
- 38:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but at that point we went, you know, we'll do what everyone else in the world does now, and we'll ask AI to predict what TechNAM is going to unveil.
- 38:37SPEAKER_05: So here it is.
- 38:38SPEAKER_06: Ta-da!
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: That's a pretty that's a pretty you know, AI is getting pretty good at that yeah, all all we said was uh to AI was make us a P2010 but with a low wing, and that's what it turned up.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: So um so we'll find out in a week or two's time.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: Probably.
- 38:55SPEAKER_06: Okay, we, I will probably look completely stupid.
- 38:57SPEAKER_06: It's it's on Tuesday, next Tuesday, that it I can't remember the time when it when the press conference is on.
- 39:03SPEAKER_06: So I'll probably look really stupid because it'll be something like I don't know, a single seat something or other.
- 39:09SPEAKER_06: Single seat racer.
- 39:10SPEAKER_06: Single seat racer.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: I don't think it's gonna be that.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: I I I if I had to guess, I'd say you're on the money here.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: But um let's we'll find out.
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: So um also happening.
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: Um Piper will be showing the diesel seminar, which is uh that's a really interesting step now, I think, for the trading market, isn't it?
- 39:30SPEAKER_05: That's because it's gonna be powered by the um the Delta Hawk diesel engines.
- 39:34SPEAKER_05: Um Piper have alluded to a diesel seminar in the past, but it's never happened, has it?
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: But now yeah, so uh so that's uh so diesel seminole as well.
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: It'd be interesting to see that.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Um has anyone else come across anything new that uh they're expecting?
- 39:50SPEAKER_07: Well, Delta Hawk have got quite a bit of news, and they're gonna give us an update on the Vans R V14 project they've been working on for a while.
- 39:57SPEAKER_05: They brought that last year, but I think they've been refining that, haven't they?
- 40:00SPEAKER_07: And the same thing with uh they've got an Cirrus SR20 with uh the the same engine.
- 40:05SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so they've done that.
- 40:06SPEAKER_07: They've got a new package for the Cessna 172, so they're they're really firing on all fronts here, and they're gonna have mock-ups of two two-cylinder and six-cylinder versions of its current of its engine.
- 40:17SPEAKER_07: The current one is a four-cylinder.
- 40:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, two cylinders in an interesting development.
- 40:21SPEAKER_07: I guess that must be aimed at the experimental market.
- 40:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, for sure.
- 40:25SPEAKER_07: I mean we should see And drones probably.
- 40:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 40:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 40:28SPEAKER_06: Big drones.
- 40:29SPEAKER_06: Big drones, yeah.
- 40:29SPEAKER_06: Big drones.
- 40:30SPEAKER_06: Big drones with cameras and bombs.
- 40:32SPEAKER_06: Um we should see another version of the latest version of the R V15, I'm guessing.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: Uh I n I think all all hopes are on seeing the final version.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: The final version.
- 40:44SPEAKER_05: Which so that's the R V15 with its new revised fuselage, uh wearing the wings that and the uh the wings that we saw uh that went on order last Oskkosh, and obviously the tail that's come along since.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: So, yeah, really excited to see that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: They've also been hinting at something else, um, but as of yet, no one is sure.
- 41:05SPEAKER_06: So I mean it's not an aeroplane, and I've obviously seen it already, but Garmin Access will be, I predict, everywhere.
- 41:12SPEAKER_06: I thought I mean anyone who's got an LSA with the with G3X touch will probably have an access.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: I cannot believe and I I watch an RV building forum Vans Air Force, and that has been a wash this week with people selling Garmin G3X.
- 41:25SPEAKER_05: I've seen a whole bunch of G3Xs for sale.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: So clearly Axis, and I've seen vendors, uh uh avionics vendors going, we've got access.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: So I'm predicting that in the avionics world, Axis is gonna be the most spoken about thing.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think so.
- 41:39SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: Not a new airplane.
- 41:42SPEAKER_06: In fact, a bit of an old airplane.
- 41:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_06: In fact, several old airplanes are gonna be at Oshacrosh, I think for the first time.
- 41:50SPEAKER_07: This is the red arrows.
- 41:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:52SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 41:53SPEAKER_06: Sorry, I'm just guessing so many.
- 41:56SPEAKER_06: It's true.
- 41:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: Well, they are old.
- 41:58SPEAKER_06: Good guess, Dave.
- 41:58SPEAKER_06: They are old.
- 41:59SPEAKER_06: That's very good.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_06: So they're gonna be they're gonna be strutting their stuff.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: Talking of old, there's going to be a replica flying replica of the Wright B flyer, which is I'm excited.
- 42:11SPEAKER_05: Flying replica.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, an actual flying replica.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: Uh from the National Aviation Heritage Area in Dayton, Ohio.
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: Uh it's a 1910 design and it's um it's it's you'll see it and you'll go, wow, that's really right, brothers.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: Um it's obviously it's a modern replica built with some modern materials and powered by a more modern engine.
- 42:29SPEAKER_05: But that's going to be flying apparently in the air shows on Tuesday and Thursday.
- 42:34SPEAKER_07: You mean it's gonna it's gonna take Tuesday and Thursday to get round to have a more modern control system.
- 42:40SPEAKER_05: Um I think Yeah, I don't think this one relied in a man in a frame sliding around.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Um so that'll be really that'll be really interesting to see.
- 42:49SPEAKER_06: So um Dave's Dave's posted an interesting question on the running list here.
- 42:54SPEAKER_06: Will this be the year that Textron finally announced certification of the Pipistrail Pantera?
- 43:00SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go on.
- 43:01SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go with no.
- 43:03SPEAKER_07: Well, I mean it's a serious rival, sitting there.
- 43:05SPEAKER_06: Do we think yeah, it's uh unfortunately, you know, there are certain things that just sit it's been around, it's been it's it's been a development project for too long, yeah, and it's probably the world has moved on.
- 43:14SPEAKER_06: The new regulations, there's all sorts of new materials, new engine.
- 43:19SPEAKER_06: I I think you know they should probably go.
- 43:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, do you remember Panchera first came out?
- 43:25SPEAKER_07: Remember when we first saw it?
- 43:27SPEAKER_07: That was 1910.
- 43:29SPEAKER_07: No, that was the right people.
- 43:31SPEAKER_07: I'm sorry.
- 43:32SPEAKER_07: Yes, but no, it was twelve 2012, something 14 bloody years.
- 43:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 43:37SPEAKER_05: Um is there anything happening in the world of electric?
- 43:39SPEAKER_07: Well, there is, yes.
- 43:40SPEAKER_07: Magni X, which is uh an uh not Moolin X.
- 43:43SPEAKER_07: Not Moolin X.
- 43:44SPEAKER_07: Well, you could have a contract.
- 43:46SPEAKER_07: But uh, Magni X it makes electric motors.
- 43:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 43:48SPEAKER_07: And they make a whole range of of them.
- 43:50SPEAKER_07: And they're taking pre-orders at the at Oshkosh for its experimental Magni Air electric engine.
- 43:57SPEAKER_07: Um because it's not just it's not just an electric motor.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: Motor.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: It's a whole bunch of systems.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: It's the power powertrain system, isn't it?
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: It's batteries, controller, inverter.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 44:07SPEAKER_07: Here is a little picture showing the entire MACNEX system.
- 44:11SPEAKER_07: It's not a blender.
- 44:12SPEAKER_07: It's not a blender.
- 44:13SPEAKER_07: And it's more than just an electric motor stuck on the front.
- 44:15SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 44:16SPEAKER_07: But this one is aimed at the experimental market, the permit market.
- 44:21SPEAKER_07: I guess they just want to get some sales going, get some motors out there turning and earning, turning and earning.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: Very good.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: They're also going to show you.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: They're also going to show an electric uh Robinson R66 demo.
- 44:36SPEAKER_07: I might guess this demo is going to be very short because the amount of power an R66 needs.
- 44:43SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 44:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 44:44SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Has there been there was a hydrogen fuel cell Res Robinson, wasn't there?
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: Has there ever been an electric Robinson?
- 44:52SPEAKER_07: Yes, well, uh there has been an electric robin.
- 44:54SPEAKER_07: Because they remember the the a few years ago there was an electric R44.
- 44:58SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_07: Because and they were trying to make it so it could hop hop between hospitals.
- 45:02SPEAKER_07: Their big thing was to be able to hop between hospitals taking transplant materials, that sort of thing.
- 45:09SPEAKER_07: Sounds an odd way to justify a project, but that's anyway.
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: But no, Robinson is is pushing ahead on several fronts on electric.
- 45:16SPEAKER_07: It recognises, if you like, that the days of internal combustion engines in places like California are they may well be numbered.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: I'm still most excited about this whole new the the the Rise.
- 45:27SPEAKER_05: Is it Rise?
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: The people who make this completely different way of flying helicopters on Sky Rise.
- 45:33SPEAKER_05: Skyrise, yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: I d I'm hoping to see more from them because they've they have had a presence at all.
- 45:38SPEAKER_06: They had a presence of us, but they had a bit of a bizarre presence.
- 45:40SPEAKER_06: It was like, here we are.
- 45:42SPEAKER_06: It kind of the whole thing screamed, stay away, stay away, don't come and visit us.
- 45:46SPEAKER_06: Hopefully that will change.
- 45:48SPEAKER_06: You look like an aircraft person, not a rater.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: So I think I I think it's not I think you've all missed one key airplane that we should all look to a new aircraft.
- 45:59SPEAKER_06: What?
- 46:00SPEAKER_06: What is this?
- 46:00SPEAKER_06: Well, you need to guess.
- 46:02SPEAKER_06: I don't I I I don't know.
- 46:04SPEAKER_06: Come on, Ed.
- 46:05SPEAKER_06: Dave.
- 46:05SPEAKER_07: Skyflyer.
- 46:06SPEAKER_07: No?
- 46:07SPEAKER_07: Well, no.
- 46:08SPEAKER_07: They're gonna be there.
- 46:08SPEAKER_06: They're gonna be there.
- 46:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:10SPEAKER_06: No.
- 46:11SPEAKER_06: What what what what aircraft company has was working on a new aircraft, thought they were gonna go bust but didn't finish it, and then didn't actually go bust and got bought, and and hopefully they'll have Oh come on.
- 46:26SPEAKER_06: I'm not.
- 46:27SPEAKER_06: Would you like another clue?
- 46:29SPEAKER_06: Yes, more information required.
- 46:30SPEAKER_06: Their HQ is not very far from Oskosh.
- 46:33SPEAKER_06: Sonics?
- 46:34SPEAKER_06: Sonics.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: Is there not gonna be a Sonic's High Wing?
- 46:39SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, oh yeah, almost for almost certainly, yeah.
- 46:41SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be the star of the show, surely.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: I it will be there, yeah.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: I'm sure yes, I'm sure.
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: And it'll be nice if you're not.
- 46:48SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's that's that's kind of like that's a company that everyone thought was finished, yeah, but actually got rescued, and not only got rescued, but they had investment in it.
- 46:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that'll be nice.
- 46:56SPEAKER_06: And the high wing is gonna be like this is the personification of the future.
- 47:01SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 47:02SPEAKER_07: They have they have restarted testing the high wing as well, so making progress with it.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'd be surprised if it's not on the stand.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, no, I'm sure.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's only a little taxi across the airfield for them.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: Um also attending, I not new stuff, but in the in the from the world of fantastic things that have been restored, reproduced, um, or uh you know, repaired, whatever.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: There's going to be a fantastic Temco Buckaroo restoration.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: I know everyone's going, what the hell is one of those?
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: But trust me.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: It's a game that was sold at Christmas from the nineteen in the nineteen seventies.
- 47:36SPEAKER_07: Putting the tail on the back of a donkey.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: No.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: It's it's an ultra-rare.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: You we all know the Globe Swift.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: Imagine a tandem two-seat uh Globe Swift.
- 47:44SPEAKER_05: It's like the Globe Swift went to war as a tiny war bird.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: That that'll be fantastic, trust me on this.
- 47:50SPEAKER_05: Was that like a T T thirty-five, it was.
- 47:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, beautiful thing.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: Um there's gonna be the Evangel 4500.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: That's the twin designed only with a set square.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: Um and that is so it's like boxy but good.
- 48:06SPEAKER_05: Uh and it's been restored.
- 48:07SPEAKER_05: Boxy but quirky.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: Boxy but quirky.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: Mid Mid America Flight Museum has lavished lots of love on that, and that's gonna be there.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: And I trust me, that's gonna be so utterly bizarre, but I'm guaranteeing that's gonna be one of the stars of the show.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: Um Mid-America also bringing along the Q GB QED, which we saw in 2014 when it first attended.
- 48:28SPEAKER_05: Never flew.
- 48:29SPEAKER_05: I suspect though, uh never flew at the show, but I suspect we are gonna see it fly at the show because they've bought it, it didn't fly for a very long time, they've re-engineered a whole bunch of stuff, and they've made that into a fantastic flying airplane.
- 48:41SPEAKER_05: So lots of people excited, and it's a big aeroplane.
- 48:44SPEAKER_05: Do you think they had two teams?
- 48:45SPEAKER_06: Like one team, you do straight, you do curvy.
- 48:49SPEAKER_05: I think so, yeah.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: Uh obviously Red Bull have made uh been in the news quite a lot because they've flown their DC six across the pond, so that's gonna be fantastic, and taken their P38.
- 49:00SPEAKER_05: Um, so that's a big deal.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: I've flown in that DC six.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: How cool it was.
- 49:04SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, so they're very very excited to see that.
- 49:06SPEAKER_05: There's gonna be in the Warbird front, there's apparently two new exciting P51 restorations, a P40.
- 49:12SPEAKER_05: Plus I love stuff like that, especially when they're too, but I mean oh there's the P51.
- 49:17SPEAKER_06: Oh wow.
- 49:17SPEAKER_06: I know that Oscross does that to you, it's like, oh, it's another dozen P51s flying around.
- 49:23SPEAKER_07: Well in the whole Warbirds field, it's bigger than most countries' air force.
- 49:26SPEAKER_07: It is, yeah.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: What will be exciting, and do you remember when uh that P51 Thunderbird turned up, the blue beautiful blue and yellow?
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: And you go, wow, a warbird in civilian colours.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: Uh a colactor called Walt Bow has just restored a bear cat, and that was f that's famously lived its life in a civilian colour scheme.
- 49:43SPEAKER_05: It's like orange and blue, and he's just restored that, and it's still, he's kept the original colours.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 49:48SPEAKER_05: So that is going to be, I predict that's gonna be one of the one of the real highlights.
- 49:53SPEAKER_07: I can see you're really excited.
- 49:56SPEAKER_07: You're really excited already, Edward.
- 49:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: Plus, I think there's one of the biggest bomber lineups any uh ever for Oshkosh B-29, two B-17s, a B-24, a consolidated privateer, which looks a bit like B B24, and multiple B-25s.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: Well, it's a part of the theme of Oshkosh this year, isn't it?
- 50:12SPEAKER_06: Celebrating 250 years of the year.
- 50:14SPEAKER_06: America 250th.
- 50:15SPEAKER_06: So it's gonna be quite a um what's the word I'm looking for?
- 50:20SPEAKER_06: I can't think of a celebration of It wasn't the word I was looking for.
- 50:26SPEAKER_06: But um yeah I It's going to be like that.
- 50:28SPEAKER_06: You know that commentator who I haven't heard for a couple of years now when they Danny Chisel.
- 50:33SPEAKER_06: He is he's very Oshkosh.
- 50:35SPEAKER_06: He's it's gonna be like him on steroids.
- 50:38SPEAKER_05: Him him on on on performance enhancing uh enhancing substances.
- 50:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 50:44SPEAKER_06: Yes, yeah.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: But Oshkosh, I mean we've said it before, we've we'll say it again.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: There's nothing like it.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: If you're going this year, try and find us because it's it it will be great to see you.
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: And uh if you have if you're not going, put it in your diary for next year.
- 50:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:00SPEAKER_07: Be all excited, I'm not going.
- 51:02SPEAKER_07: You're not going?
- 51:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, that's true.
- 51:04SPEAKER_06: You're you're holding the fork back here.
- 51:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 51:06SPEAKER_07: Yes, uh, press release central or whatever it is.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: You'll be you'll be busy, Dave.
- 51:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah, busy Dave indeed.
- 51:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: Okay, so it's time for what caught your eye?
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: Ian, what has caught your eye this week?
- 51:20SPEAKER_06: I was I was doing a little bit of research around Oshcross just.
- 51:24SPEAKER_06: A little bit of research.
- 51:25SPEAKER_06: What's gonna come up at Oshcross that's gonna be really funky and interesting?
- 51:28SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 51:29SPEAKER_06: And I saw this thing and it went, you know, in their um vintage in review, they've got a 1935 National Aeroplane and Motor Company Bluebird LP4.
- 51:38SPEAKER_06: At the moment, and I went, okay, I'd no idea what that is, but yeah, when they do vintage and review, it's usually pretty impressive stuff.
- 51:46SPEAKER_06: Pretty Google stuff.
- 51:47SPEAKER_06: So I stuck it into Google, clicked on images, because you know, pictures, I do pictures better than words.
- 51:54SPEAKER_06: Big pictures.
- 51:55SPEAKER_06: And what it was a whole load of Campbell Bluebear cars.
- 52:00SPEAKER_06: I thought, well, that can't be right.
- 52:02SPEAKER_06: No.
- 52:02SPEAKER_06: And then I thought, oh, I did Google, I want because I thought it would be really funky to see some beautiful replicas of that.
- 52:08SPEAKER_06: And that's you know, sometimes Oshcross does things a little bit left field.
- 52:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 52:13SPEAKER_06: And it turns out not.
- 52:15SPEAKER_06: It turns out it's a it's a kind of slightly strange looking airplane.
- 52:18SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go as far as saying almost the forerunner of the street shadow.
- 52:25SPEAKER_05: And looking at it on screen, it is it's like it's like a bathtub with a tail boom and some tail feathers and a little two-cylinder engine.
- 52:36SPEAKER_05: But this is actually it's it's an incredibly rare vintage aeroplane that a guy called Tim Talon found.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: Tim is known for restorations of completely unknown, unobtainium things, uh, and uh it will be incredible to see this.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: So uh that's what I'm thinking.
- 52:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 52:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
- 52:54SPEAKER_07: Dave.
- 52:55SPEAKER_07: Well, I saw uh some of the lineup for the Roswell Air Races, used to be known as the Reno Air Races, of course, but they've moved venue to Roswell.
- 53:04SPEAKER_07: And this year is going to be the first year at Roswell where they have the full the full works back again.
- 53:10SPEAKER_05: Because the Unlimited's have said we're coming.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 53:14SPEAKER_06: Okay, we picked up our toys that we threw out the prime last year.
- 53:16SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna get just coming on.
- 53:18SPEAKER_06: Don't just don't remind us of it, okay?
- 53:19SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 53:19SPEAKER_06: We'll come if you promise not to say anything.
- 53:21SPEAKER_07: I think they really did go about it the right way.
- 53:24SPEAKER_07: The first year they ran it, they they just wanted to see how it all worked.
- 53:28SPEAKER_07: A bunch of new people, new venues.
- 53:30SPEAKER_07: It really did work.
- 53:31SPEAKER_07: It worked well.
- 53:32SPEAKER_07: So now they've got the confidence they can go ahead and go full blast with the the rest of the field.
- 53:36SPEAKER_07: But new for this year, yeah, there's also a jet class.
- 53:40SPEAKER_05: Uh wasn't there a jet class?
- 53:42SPEAKER_05: It was a jet class, no.
- 53:43SPEAKER_07: Well, they call it the debut of the all-new jet class MAC course.
- 53:46SPEAKER_07: Ah, no, they've got they've got what they've been is they're details.
- 53:50SPEAKER_07: They've got a they've got a new course, especially for the the beat the big jets.
- 53:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 53:55SPEAKER_07: In fact, here is the new course.
- 53:58SPEAKER_07: But what I was most excited about was to see that there are going to be two MiG-17s flying.
- 54:03SPEAKER_07: And here's a picture of a MiG-17.
- 54:05SPEAKER_07: Not necessarily one of those that's going to be flying there, because I couldn't find a copyright-free picture otherwise.
- 54:11SPEAKER_07: But um the the just look, the MiG-17 is isn't that sensational.
- 54:15SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, I the the swept wing um uh Korean War era MiGs are pretty spectacular.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: The fit the 17 uh geek head on here uh is the afterburning version.
- 54:27SPEAKER_05: Because if you go to Oshkosh and the Night Air Show, which I know you're really bored of by now, um, but there is a guy called Randy Ball um who flies a MiG-17.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: And it but the afterburner is like some Russian went, what do we do?
- 54:41SPEAKER_05: We'll just pump fuel into the tailpipe, and it's just this this big chain a big kind of trail of flame.
- 54:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:46SPEAKER_05: But yeah, uh racing MiG-17s, that's going to be quite something.
- 54:50SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 54:50SPEAKER_06: During the night air show, you'll find me back at the house.
- 54:53SPEAKER_06: Having a snooze.
- 54:54SPEAKER_06: Having a snooze.
- 54:55SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: Well I yeah, you're done with it.
- 54:58SPEAKER_05: Done with night air show.
- 54:59SPEAKER_06: I mean, I quite like it, it's quite good, but yeah, it's you're kind of out there, there's a whole load of flying insects thing, and then after it's over, four million people try to leave the Oshosh site at the same time.
- 55:10SPEAKER_06: So you end up with another hour or two in a car park not moving.
- 55:12SPEAKER_06: If you're lucky.
- 55:13SPEAKER_06: And then we've got to get up bloody early the next morning.
- 55:15SPEAKER_06: I've seen seen it a few times.
- 55:16SPEAKER_06: I'm I'm okay.
- 55:17SPEAKER_06: Ian loves Oshkosh, but not the night air show.
- 55:20SPEAKER_06: No.
- 55:26SPEAKER_05: It's a good one if you camped on site for sure.
- 55:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: Or if I was staying in the Hilton Garden Inn, which I'm not, because that that's got that's got to be like a thousand bucks a night.
- 55:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, if not more.
- 55:36SPEAKER_06: They've got that open air bar.
- 55:37SPEAKER_06: The open air terrace on top.
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: That would be a great place to watch the night air show.
- 55:40SPEAKER_06: That's true.
- 55:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that would be.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: So uh are you going to re are are you going to Roswell, Dave?
- 55:46SPEAKER_05: No, I won't be going to Roswell.
- 55:47SPEAKER_05: Just watch it online.
- 55:48SPEAKER_07: Just watch it online, yep.
- 55:49SPEAKER_07: Excellent.
- 55:50SPEAKER_07: I'm thinking of going down to the uh microite thing at uh Blah in the Black.
- 55:54SPEAKER_07: Bluh.
- 55:55SPEAKER_07: Blois uh in France.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: How about you, Ed?
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: Well that just leaves me.
- 55:59SPEAKER_05: And um uh so I went to uh uh little flying at West Histad on uh down near Petersfield on Saturday.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: And uh one of the amazing airplanes that turned up was this, the Foster Wickner Wicco.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: And you're all going, What?
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Um Is it a Foster or Oster?
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: No, it's uh Foster, not Oster.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: I mean this is a beautiful thing.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: This is not Oster like.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: I misspoke.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: I m it's I misspoke, yes.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: Oster people, don't don't flame me.
- 56:34SPEAKER_05: Um But uh this was created by Australian Geoffrey Wickner.
- 56:39SPEAKER_05: Uh he moved to England in 1934 and he thought I can make a low-cost trainer.
- 56:44SPEAKER_07: So he called it the Wicco?
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: Well no, he he said when I can make a low-cost two-seater.
- 56:49SPEAKER_05: Uh he did go.
- 56:50SPEAKER_05: Actually, what I don't want to keep it low-cost, I'm not going to use a conventional aero engine.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: He reckoned that he could take a Ford V8 engine and stick a gearbox from a Pobjoy engine on it to create his own engine, which was called the Wicco F.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: But as we know, creating a new aeroplane and a new engine is a bad combination, and actually it was terrible.
- 57:09SPEAKER_05: Um but so what he did have to concede was he had to buy an engine from a proper manufacturer.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: So he went to De Havland uh and bought a gypsy and fitted that, and that's what uh this Wicco is powered by.
- 57:21SPEAKER_05: Um amazingly, they only ever made ten, um, and you're probably not surprised at that.
- 57:26SPEAKER_05: No.
- 57:26SPEAKER_05: One survives today, and it's this one.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: It has it was beautifully restored in 2005.
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: Um uh but it's been stored away for quite a time after the death of its owner, but it's back flying again.
- 57:37SPEAKER_05: So maybe if you're lucky, you might see this around.
- 57:40SPEAKER_05: It is it's uh it was a restoration by the late Ron Such and it is perfection.
- 57:45SPEAKER_06: If you see if you see something that looks like an ostar with a tail that looks like it's a a mashup of a stagger wing and a dehavillant tail, okay.
- 57:55SPEAKER_06: That might be your wacko wacko.
- 57:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's like it's like the British made a monocoupe, which is another obscure reference.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: But I think it's I think it's it's kind of cool, and the back end is a bit boxy, but yeah, yeah, that that looks like fun.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: So anyway, it sounded fantastic.
- 58:15SPEAKER_05: Back end by Set Square.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yes, good, Dave, events.
- 58:19SPEAKER_07: Yes, well, it's another busy weekend.
- 58:21SPEAKER_07: Um so on Friday the 17th, there's a barbecue and flying at Compton Abbas, Friday to Sunday, three-day event, summer flying at Wolverhampton Hapenney Green Airport.
- 58:30SPEAKER_07: That place is happening.
- 58:31SPEAKER_07: It really, they're really motoring there.
- 58:33SPEAKER_07: Saturday the 18th, there's a Furs flying, FERS Farm flying and barbecue, bringing a sausage, as they say.
- 58:40SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 58:41SPEAKER_07: Um the Vintage Piper Aircraft Club flying at Sherburn and Elmet, also on Saturday.
- 58:46SPEAKER_07: On Sunday the 19th, there's a best as British best of British day at uh Breton and a Chipmunk flying at Fenland.
- 58:52SPEAKER_07: And of course, next week there's a really big event, the Farmborough International Air Show.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: No one cares about that.
- 59:00SPEAKER_05: At least not in our world.
- 59:02SPEAKER_07: It's full of people in suits.
- 59:04SPEAKER_07: I know.
- 59:04SPEAKER_07: I've had to go there to report on wearing a black suit on a searingly hot day.
- 59:09SPEAKER_06: You go to Aero Oshkosh and you come back with your aviation batteries charged.
- 59:13SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 59:14SPEAKER_06: You go to someone at Farmborough these days and you come back with your aviation batteries leached out and run out of power because it's just people, can up my suit.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: Obviously, if you're going to Farmborough, have a great time.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: Otherwise, go to Washkosh, which is on all of next week.
- 59:30SPEAKER_06: So it's been streamed live as well.
- 59:32SPEAKER_06: There are, I think it's the web the webcams are live.
- 59:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's there's like half a dozen of them around the site, so you could see if you can spot us.
- 59:41SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 59:41SPEAKER_06: Right, is that it?
- 59:43SPEAKER_06: Thank you very, very much, team.
- 59:44SPEAKER_06: That was a bit of a tour de force, this one.
- 59:46SPEAKER_06: Thank you very much for everyone for watching it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_06: Thank you very much, Henry, who's standing in the naughty corner back there.
- 59:51SPEAKER_06: And uh thank you very much to our sponsors, Sky Demon, and also thank you again to Sirius Continental Airspace Technology and Hassel Propeller for sponsoring our coverage next week at Oscrosh.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_06: We will see you not next week, but the week after.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_06: Um, have a good one, have a have a great site, safe flight, and if you go, and hopefully see you at Oscrosh.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_06: Cheers, bye.
