- 0:00Hey y'all, I've been thinking about this topic for a bit now
- 0:02and I wasn't ready to release it yet.
- 0:04But in Group we covered it because a guy brought it to the
- 0:07table today and I thought it was beautiful and it was organic.
- 0:11And I don't know if it'll be organic today because it's
- 0:14scripted in the fact of I heard it earlier and now we're going
- 0:18to spend some time on it. But it was organic in Group.
- 0:21So just excited to talk to you about it.
- 0:24So when I first started to unpack my ideas about what it
- 0:30meant to be a man, I realized that so many of those ideas
- 0:34weren't mine. They were inherited.
- 0:37Today, what I want to do is I want to talk about what it means
- 0:40to reclaim masculinity on your own terms.
- 0:43Because I came from home. I love my own, my my dad, my
- 0:47grandpas, like all the men in my life, amazing people, respecting
- 0:52their community, valued. I value them.
- 0:55But I'm telling you, it was it was diesel mechanics, farmers,
- 1:00loggers, it was blue collar, it was tough men.
- 1:05And there was some love them some toxic masculinity traits
- 1:10inside of that. And I want to unpack some of
- 1:12those today and see what you can relate to.
- 1:14OK, so that's what we're going to go through.
- 1:19Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 1:21I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 1:24in the space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 1:25diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 1:29authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 1:32about a single action or a moment.
- 1:34It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 1:37the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 1:40So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 1:43regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes
- 1:46beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:49change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:52your authentic self. Because when you dare to show up
- 1:54fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:57So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started.
- 1:59All right, so let's set the stage for this masculinity
- 2:05crisis piece. But I'm going to tie 2 topics
- 2:08together. The question to use is what
- 2:10messages did you grow up with and what does it mean to be a
- 2:14man? So we're emotions part of that
- 2:17message were you brought up with?
- 2:19Maybe I'll say or share some funny ones, but some of the
- 2:21messages I got were hopefully none of these really
- 2:24inappropriate. I don't see any blood.
- 2:27So you can't cry. Let's see cowboy up, cream puff.
- 2:31Real tough men do hard things and don't really talk about
- 2:36their emotions attached to it. There were just some messages
- 2:40growing up that I got, and I want to acknowledge how men are
- 2:44often taught to equate strength and silence and dominance.
- 2:50So those three things, they go together and I want to normalize
- 2:54the struggle without the shame attached to it.
- 2:57You're not broken for maybe having some experiences where
- 3:02you inherited something and it's not yours, it was just given to
- 3:05you. So it's not your thinking, OK,
- 3:08It doesn't belong to you, and you have your opportunity to
- 3:10shed it. So we're going to talk about
- 3:13reclaiming masculinity. First thing is, is what is it
- 3:17and what isn't it? Let's define toxic masculinity
- 3:20and then we're going to merge it with something else.
- 3:22It's not saying men are toxic, but it's in terms that describes
- 3:26like some cultural scripts that harm us all.
- 3:29Let's outline some of those traits.
- 3:32So suppression, A vulnerability, that's something toxic
- 3:37masculinity does. It's control is absolutely a
- 3:40part of that experience. Sexual entitlement is a part of
- 3:44toxic masculinity and a disdain for anything that's like
- 3:48feminine. If you're a man and you have
- 3:50feminine traits or you have a softer side, toxic masculinity
- 3:55doesn't have any space for that like that.
- 3:58That's a dangerous place to go to share any of that stuff.
- 4:01So if we have those traits that are defined by toxic
- 4:06masculinity, like I'm not allowed to be vulnerable, let's
- 4:09talk about the cost associated with it.
- 4:11Let's tie it into addiction and recovery.
- 4:14When we aren't allowed to feel, we often find secret ways to
- 4:19numb because we're going to have to fill.
- 4:22So let's tie this into feminism as a path to wholeness.
- 4:28I want to debunk some of the mess of what feminism actually
- 4:30is. Feminism.
- 4:31It's not anti man, OK? Feminism is the belief that all
- 4:36genders deserve like equality and dignity and safety and
- 4:39opportunity. If we highlight this, the
- 4:42synergy with recovery and if we let feminism be that thing where
- 4:47we don't view it as anti man and we view it that there's a fight
- 4:52for two people in a relationship to be able to be equal to each
- 4:55other, but to be able to be partners and dignity to be
- 4:58there. And that fight is for to have
- 5:01something balanced back out. This can be really helpful.
- 5:04So just again, it's not anti man.
- 5:06And I want to highlight some of the synergy that goes on with
- 5:10recovery of what feminism is trying to fight for.
- 5:14And by the way, I'm a man talking about this.
- 5:17We need a woman to be here to tell us actually what this looks
- 5:20like. So please bear with me with all
- 5:22my flaws and weaknesses and short sides of attempting to
- 5:25describe parts of feminism. But feminism is the belief that
- 5:28all genders deserve equality, dignity, safety, opportunity.
- 5:33It's a big shift to have that balance back out.
- 5:36So once we get that balance, there's something that happens
- 5:39in individual recovery work for us as men that they're actually
- 5:44doing over there too in their journey.
- 5:46So let's highlight some of those things.
- 5:48First. One is both of them call for
- 5:50truth telling. When it comes to truth telling,
- 5:52what is it guys? We know truth telling, what is
- 5:55that? That is truth telling is really
- 5:58like essential. Our partners are asking what is
- 6:01truth? And we're going on journey of
- 6:03leaving denial and breaking through and learning how to tell
- 6:06truth, learning how to be honest.
- 6:07But it's not just truth telling that we do there.
- 6:10There is the journey for her that she's doing the same thing.
- 6:15She's trying to tell truth also. It looks a little different.
- 6:19It's hers trying to understand what truth is, understanding
- 6:22what reality is, and then sharing it and be able to say
- 6:25for herself to be able to say that of this is truth and this
- 6:28is what it looks like. And how often my journey am I
- 6:31trying to stop that from happening?
- 6:33My attic brain, my parts that are still in denial.
- 6:36If I see my partner out there trying to tell truth and I don't
- 6:39like it. She's trying to understand
- 6:40truth. She's trying to get stuff out of
- 6:41me and then viewing her as the enemy.
- 6:44But both call for truth telling. There's a both a fight for what
- 6:47reality is. We're going to take a quick
- 6:49break for a moment. I want to let you know of some
- 6:51things that we have coming up with Truth Recovery Services.
- 6:55I'm very excited to tell you about the unmasked intensive we
- 6:59have coming up in May. It's May 13th through the 16th
- 7:01in Spanish Fork, UT. The name of the intensive is
- 7:05unmasked past to authentic masculinity.
- 7:09Let me tell you some of the things we're going to
- 7:10accomplish. We're going to explore some root
- 7:12causes like at the end of the day, what's underneath this
- 7:15behavior? What's the why behind it?
- 7:17What's the insights into understanding why my behavior
- 7:21existed? The one that kept me in secrecy
- 7:22and hiding? We're going to embrace
- 7:24vulnerability. So we're confront a lot of the
- 7:27struggles of that non judge mental space so you can foster
- 7:32more authentic connections with the people that you love.
- 7:34We're going to realign with your values.
- 7:37We're going to learn new coping strategies and we're going to
- 7:40afford some authentic connection.
- 7:42We're going to build a lot of camaraderie to hear that
- 7:44happens. I wanted to share with you what
- 7:46previous participants have said about this transformation.
- 7:50So here's what one guy said. I'm just going to read it to
- 7:52you. I love the connection with those
- 7:54around me. It was eye opening to learn how
- 7:57to open up and show love for myself and be OK with what's
- 8:00going on inside of me, no matter how hard or ugly I may see it.
- 8:06I specifically remember this man saying this and just being
- 8:10astounded by like wow from around people that really open
- 8:13up. What can I explore and learn
- 8:14about myself is intensive. He found it be really eye
- 8:17opening. So anyway, For more information
- 8:20and reserve your spot, go ahead and visit our website and we'll
- 8:23provide some information for you and then take the time to invest
- 8:27in yourself so you can start to lean in in a more authentic way
- 8:32in your life. Looking forward to seeing you
- 8:34there. Well, let's get back to our
- 8:36episode. So what does feminism and
- 8:39recovery have in common? Both speak to heal trauma.
- 8:44All seek to understand generational patterns.
- 8:48That's not just generational but relational patterns and both
- 8:53seek to dive into that, to know it, to understand it and to have
- 8:58that be healed. Both of them pushed back against
- 9:00systemic shame like so much shame.
- 9:03We don't I don't view that or maybe that's not viewed of what
- 9:06might be a radical woman that is trying to fight back against
- 9:12some cultural things, some patterns, but she's actually
- 9:16fighting against systemic shame of suppression.
- 9:20How do I do that applies in you think about that number one
- 9:25question that's asked to me, which is and when I get a chance
- 9:28to sit in a intensive or a group for women that have been
- 9:32betrayed. Their question that they're
- 9:34asking is how could he have done this?
- 9:36Why could he have done this? And it's attack like am I
- 9:39enough? So the shame that exists if he
- 9:42chose this. So what does that say about me?
- 9:45So both, both are fighting against this shame that's built
- 9:48by our system. I have a quote for you from bell
- 9:51hooks or Brené Brown. And it's so, so powerful.
- 9:54So the first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males
- 9:58is not violence towards women. Instead, patriarchy demands of
- 10:03all males that they engage in acts of psychic self mutilation.
- 10:07OK, holy holy cow. It doesn't just hurt women, it
- 10:13hurts us because I have to mutilate myself.
- 10:16I have to deny parts of me, the one who exists in being able to
- 10:20express my emotions and my feelings.
- 10:23I have to hurt myself first. So that's the first act of
- 10:26violence. The thought here is we get to
- 10:28rewrite the masculine script. So they get to be new mantra.
- 10:33I get to choose masculine. I get to choose what it looks
- 10:35like because maybe what was given to me doesn't work
- 10:37culturally from generationally. So we get to share what healthy
- 10:43masculinity might look like. So that could be courage.
- 10:48It is courage, tenderness, accountability, emotional
- 10:53fluency, right protection without dominance.
- 10:58So there's how do I show up with strength and how do I have
- 11:02softness in my relationship? I thought strength was just
- 11:06being the head of the household, was being the guy that can pull
- 11:09the money in. That could be just being
- 11:13attracted to my partner in really strong ways.
- 11:17I, I want to recognize if we're going to destruct some of these
- 11:19patterns that we have to do it intentionally.
- 11:23So this is where Rick Souvery has the opportunity to evolve in
- 11:27recovery. We talked about the three
- 11:28circles, which if this is new information for you have to go
- 11:30research it. But when the guy starts in his
- 11:33journey, he does 3 circles, which is what's my inner circle
- 11:35behavior? That's like porn and cheating on
- 11:38my partner. What's middle circle behavior?
- 11:40That's the stuff that leads to that.
- 11:42Maybe that's inappropriate conversations, emotional
- 11:45connection with the opposite sex, whatever it might be.
- 11:48And then we define outer circle behaviors, which is what are the
- 11:51what is the new behavior? What is the self-care?
- 11:54What are those things that keep me in a healthy space, that
- 11:57keeps me from middle and inner circle?
- 11:59So I stay on the outside and never get in.
- 12:01And those look like, you know, my meditation, mindfulness, that
- 12:06would be my exercise, could be connection with other people.
- 12:10So those are the things that keep me from drifting in the
- 12:12middle and inner circle behavior.
- 12:14I just want to give us a little bit of a foundation for that
- 12:16before we tie this into three circles.
- 12:18So if masculinity is something I remember trying to redefine,
- 12:21let's use my three circles to do that.
- 12:24Let's decide, OK, what does inner circle behavior look like
- 12:27for me from toxicating masculinity?
- 12:29It's aggression, it's silence, it's control.
- 12:33OK, So what is the stuff that leads me to that?
- 12:35What's my middle circle behavior?
- 12:37It's resentment, it's entitlement, it's disconnection.
- 12:40So once I'm experiencing those things, that means I'm in
- 12:42dangerous territory. So it's only a matter of time
- 12:44before I act out in ways that I don't want to.
- 12:47Entitlement that's going to lead me to a place where I'm showing
- 12:50up in a way that I don't want to.
- 12:51And then you have outer circle, you pull it out, which is the
- 12:54things that the healthy way of living.
- 12:56So now if I'm going to fight back against and establish
- 13:00something new with healthy masculinity, it's going to be
- 13:03I'm being focused on things that bring connection, things that
- 13:05lead me to curiosity, things that focus on what are my
- 13:09healthy boundaries. So just we get to use the three
- 13:11circles to to build something new in healthy masculinity.
- 13:17Let's come up with like a weekly practice or some type of
- 13:19reflection. So you don't just leave this
- 13:21podcast with there's some information I heard that, but
- 13:24what can I actually do? So here's the question I have
- 13:27for you to write down to prompt you to come back to later, which
- 13:31can help you build into the three circle exercise something
- 13:34new. OK, so here's the question.
- 13:37What version of masculinity Are you ready to retire?
- 13:41Reflect on that. What version of masculinity am I
- 13:43ready to retire? And that'll lead me to my next
- 13:46question. What new way of being Are you
- 13:50ready to embody? So what is the new that's going
- 13:54to replace that? That's that outer circle.
- 13:56What's the new way of being that I'm ready to embody?
- 14:00And I would just encourage you to dig into anything Brené Brown
- 14:04related. Ted talks, Esther Perrell's
- 14:07work, just Brene Brown's work is so good.
- 14:10We get a chance to learn so much from women fighting this fight
- 14:16and we get a chance to reflect on ourselves.
- 14:17It's uncomfortable. I got to tell you, she's going
- 14:20to say some stuff that disrupted me that I'm like I disagree
- 14:23with. And then I've spent more time
- 14:25with and I've learned a lot through it.
- 14:27So dive into a lot of her work. Men, women and a worthiness is
- 14:31something that I really love. Talks about what men have to
- 14:34fight and push back on. So just want to offer some
- 14:38encouragement to you. You're not just healing yourself
- 14:40here. You're healing culture.
- 14:43And I invite you to share some feedback with me.
- 14:46Please Share your story with me so we can continue to make this
- 14:49a part of my dialogue and especially in our group setting.
- 14:52Come fight back against this stuff if you're not already,
- 14:55just to come join with us and watch and see other men that are
- 14:58changing the norm and they're empowering themselves so they
- 15:01can empower people are in relationships with or offer
- 15:06support while they empower themselves.
- 15:08Anyway, we're going to conclude with that for now, but thanks
- 15:11for fighting. Don't stop, catch you later.
- 15:15I'd love to share with you what's upcoming and we have
- 15:18something really unique coming up in June.
