- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday already.
- 0:15It's the 20th of August. Cried to have your company as we
- 0:20are going to do what we do every day.
- 0:22We are going to read another chapter of God's Word.
- 0:25And as you probably well know at the moment, we're reading
- 0:28through that wonderful story, that book of Acts, the Acts of
- 0:32the Apostles, hearing about our church growing from that first
- 0:36moment of Jesus sending out his apostles all the way through to
- 0:40Paul arriving in the heart of the known world into Rome.
- 0:44And from there, the church spread all over the show into
- 0:48your corner of the world. That's right where you are now.
- 0:52You are only a member of this church and a believer because of
- 0:56this story that we are reading today.
- 0:58And today's reading has got a section which makes people a
- 1:02little bit uncomfortable. You were going to hear about
- 1:04people dropping dead because they lied to the Holy Spirit.
- 1:09And this is included in here so that the readers would know that
- 1:13this God, this is the same God with perfect standards that
- 1:17we've seen in the Old Testament, this God of might and power over
- 1:22all. Not some new soft version, but
- 1:25the same mighty God who rules absolutely.
- 1:29So let's buckle ourselves in, take a deep breath, and read
- 1:34together Acts chapter 5. But there was a certain man
- 1:48named Ananias who with his wife Sapphira, sold some property.
- 1:54He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was
- 1:57the full amount. With his wife's consent, he kept
- 2:00the rest. Then Peter said, and a nice Why
- 2:04have you let Satan fill your heart?
- 2:07You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for
- 2:10yourself. The property was yours to sell
- 2:13or not sell as you wished, and after selling it, the money was
- 2:17also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like
- 2:20this? You weren't lying to us, but to
- 2:23God. As soon as Ananias heard these
- 2:26words, he fell to the floor and died.
- 2:30Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
- 2:32Then some young man got up, wrapped him in a sheet and took
- 2:36him out and buried him. About 3 hours later, his wife
- 2:40came in. Not knowing what had happened,
- 2:43Peter asked her, Was this the price you and your husband
- 2:46received for your land? Yes, she replied.
- 2:50That was the price, and Peter said, how could the two of you
- 2:54even think of conspiring to test the spirit of the Lord like
- 2:58this? The young men who buried your
- 3:01husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you
- 3:04out too. Instantly she fell to the floor
- 3:08and died. When the young men came in and
- 3:11saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her
- 3:15beside her husband. Great fear gripped the entire
- 3:18church and everyone else heard what had happened.
- 3:22The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and
- 3:26wonders among the people, and all the believers were meeting
- 3:29regularly at the temple in the area known as Solomon's
- 3:32Colonnade. But no one else dared to join
- 3:35them. Even though all the people had
- 3:37high regard for them, yet more and more people believed and
- 3:42were brought to the Lord. Crowds of both men and women.
- 3:46As a result of the apostles work, sick people were brought
- 3:49out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter's shadow
- 3:52might fall across some of them as he went by.
- 3:55Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their
- 3:59sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all
- 4:03healed. The high priest and his
- 4:06officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
- 4:10They arrested the apostles and put them in the public gaol.
- 4:13But the Angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of
- 4:16the gaol, and brought them out. Then he told them, Go to the
- 4:21temple and give the people this message of life.
- 4:26So at Daybreak the apostles entered the temple, as they were
- 4:30told, and immediately began teaching.
- 4:33When the high priests and his officials arrived, they convened
- 4:37the High Council, the full assembly of the elders of
- 4:40Israel. Then they sent for the apostles
- 4:43to be brought from the gaol for trial.
- 4:45But when the temple guards went to the gaol, the men were gone.
- 4:50So they returned to the council and reported.
- 4:52The gaol was securely locked, with the guard standing outside.
- 4:57But when we opened the gates, no one was there.
- 5:01When the captain of the temple guard and the leading priests
- 5:03heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all
- 5:08end. Then someone arrived with
- 5:10startling news. The men you put in gaol are
- 5:13standing in the temple teaching the people.
- 5:17The captain went with his temple guards and arrested the
- 5:19apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people
- 5:23would stone them. Then they brought the apostles
- 5:26before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.
- 5:30We gave you strict orders, never again to teach in this man's
- 5:34name, he said. Instead you have filled all
- 5:39Jerusalem with your teaching about him and you want to make
- 5:43us responsible for his death. Peter and the apostles replied
- 5:48We must obey God rather than any human authority.
- 5:53The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you
- 5:57killed him by hanging him on a cross.
- 6:00Then God put him in the place of honour at his right hand as
- 6:05Prince and Saviour. He did this so the people of
- 6:08Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
- 6:12We are witnesses of these things, and so was the Holy
- 6:16Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.
- 6:21When they heard this, the High Council was furious and decided
- 6:25to kill them. But one member, a Pharisee named
- 6:28Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by
- 6:32all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent
- 6:36outside the council chamber for a while.
- 6:39Then he said to his colleagues, Men of Israel, take care what
- 6:44you were planning to do to these men.
- 6:47Some time ago there was that fellow Theodus who pretended to
- 6:51be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but
- 6:55he was killed and all his followers went their various
- 6:58ways. The whole movement came to
- 7:00nothing after him. At the time of the census there
- 7:04was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but
- 7:08he was killed too, and all his followers were scattered.
- 7:12So my advice is, leave these men alone.
- 7:16Let them go. If they are planning and doing
- 7:19these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
- 7:24But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them.
- 7:29You may even find yourselves fighting against God.
- 7:33The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and
- 7:37had them flogged. Then they ordered them never
- 7:40again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.
- 7:46The apostles left the High Council rejoicing that God had
- 7:49counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
- 7:53And every day in the temple and from house to house, they
- 7:57continued to teach and preach this message.
- 8:01Jesus is the Messiah. Ah yes Jesus, the message about
- 8:15you is so remarkable. It cannot be kept, it cannot be
- 8:19hidden, it cannot be quieted. And this wisdom from this man
- 8:24Gamaliel all those years ago, that if your movement was not of
- 8:29you, of the living God, it would just soon Peter out.
- 8:32And here we are, 2000 plus years later and your church continuing
- 8:38to move and spread and grow and make a difference around all
- 8:43corners of the globe. I think we can well and truly
- 8:47say that Kamaliel was right and that you indeed are in your
- 8:51church. Because no movement of man could
- 8:54possibly do what you do. You, the incredible, almighty
- 8:58living God who somehow chooses to love us, little old,
- 9:04insignificant us. And right now, as we pray, you
- 9:08bend your ear to hear what we say.
- 9:12Ah, we love you, our wonderful God, and we are so grateful for
- 9:16all that you have done for us, all you continue to do for us,
- 9:20and all you have promised to do for us in the future.
- 9:24So here we are, your people, so humbled, so grateful.
- 9:30And we pray all of these things in the living and powerful name
- 9:33of Jesus. Amen.
