- 0:04Welcome to the nerd polity. Hi, this is Nick Nastasu, story editor
- 0:10on Star Wars, The Clone Wars and Star Wars bad Batch, and you
- 0:15are listening to aggressive negotiations. Hello, and welcome to aggressive negotiations coming at
- 0:30you from I'm not even actually sure where we're from, Babe, we're Is
- 0:34this a purgl we're writing on? I'm just one of your hosts, Matthew
- 0:38Rushing and with me as he is every single week, the illustrious John Mills.
- 0:43So, if purgol or space whales, are there space nar walls?
- 0:47That's my question? Ooh, and what would the difference of capability be?
- 0:52Does a space like do you have to take a purgol to go to somewhere
- 0:56else, but then you have to take a space nar whall which moves backwards
- 1:00back from somewhere else maybe I'm just katie. Or does the does their horn
- 1:07make them even better at traversing even faster through subspace? Like? Yes,
- 1:12like a directional beacon sort of thing. Yes, ye, exactly, there
- 1:17we go, space norwalls. That's our new thing. Well, there you
- 1:19go, yep. I can't wait to see it, Dave, make it
- 1:22happen. But you can find us all over the place, so hit us
- 1:25up on Twitter. At the Jedi Masters were with the entire network. At

- 1:32Slash the Nerd Party were on Instagram at the Nerd Party. You can
- 1:34find us online at the Nerdparty dot com. So go to all those places
- 1:38and interact with us. But John, we were discussing this, and I
- 1:41think this is interesting. We've gotten the announcement about the fact that physical media
- 1:46is returning, and we're getting the Mandalorian season one and two. It looks
- 1:52like season three is going to be released next year as well, and we're
- 1:57also hoping and that means we'll get you one of the Clone Wars on you
- 2:00know these type of things as well, Bad Batch. So why first,
- 2:07I mean, why do you think all of a sudden, it seems as
- 2:10though Disney is making this turn towards physical media again and especially putting these things
- 2:15in four K. Honestly, I think it's because they have heard everybody's complaints.
- 2:21Well, I think it's multi factorial. Let me let me throw this
- 2:23out there. I think that you and I have talked about like wanting to
- 2:28embrace physical media. We like owning things, and we also have talked about
- 2:31how we like the extras. We like holding onto things. But I'll go
- 2:36ahead and throw it out there. I don't think that Disney Plus is sustainable.
- 2:42I think that they've discovered that it's not the money maker they thought it
- 2:46was going to be, and they're going back to physical media because they got
- 2:50no choice. It's the only way that they're gonna I mean, think about
- 2:54it. If a movie bombed in the past, bomb being a relative term,
- 3:00Let's take the one that everybody thinks was a bomb solo, a Star
- 3:02Wars story. Solo A Star Wars story did have a four K release and
- 3:07a four K limit. It helps defray the costs. Nowadays, physical media
- 3:15is pennies to make and dollars to make in reverse. Right, so your
- 3:22margin, your profit margin, is huge, and you've created a thing where
- 3:27you'll get at least the completests. You'll get the people that love it,
- 3:30you'll get the people that want to give it another shot, all that type
- 3:32of stuff, instead of having them just be part of a big pool of
- 3:36money. Now they're giving you forty fifty bucks. Well, I mean,
- 3:39it just it's interesting to me because you know, Disney cut its teeth on
- 3:46physical media, and I mean they cornered the market on how to get people
- 3:52to buy physical media over and over and over again. You know, in
- 3:57fact, they're actually about to do it right now with there they're bringing pictures
- 4:02out like Cinderella and Snow White where they've gone back and cleaned up the negatives
- 4:09and give it in a new transfer and put it on four KSE so you
- 4:12have the best presentation that it's probably ever looked right. And you know,
- 4:16I think to me, that's the thing that Star Wars also did. George
- 4:21did the same thing right. I mean, he really understood from Disney how
- 4:27to do this. And so when you're going to give fans the opportunity to
- 4:32yes, they can always have it on Disney Plus right where they can pull
- 4:38it up and watch it anytime, but to allow fans to have on their
- 4:43shelf beautiful steel book editions of the Mandalorian seasons one and two and then three.
- 4:48It will come and I'm sure they'll do the book a boa fit,
- 4:51and you know, I'm sure we'll get Canobi and all of these shows right
- 4:56that, Yes, it becomes about you know, you're going to get the
- 4:58completests who will go out and just buy it, because even if they don't
- 5:01even watch it, because it sits on their shelf, you know, well,
- 5:04you just made fifty bucks that you would never have had because of that.
- 5:08And so but I also think that they're realizing too that it's hard to
- 5:15keep people invested if in fandom, if you don't allow those things to happen.
- 5:21Well, yes, absolutely. And also the act of grabbing a desk
- 5:27and putting in a player, there's intent there. I have a different level
- 5:30of viewing than I'm just scanning the channels the way I used to scan point
- 5:33the channels with the remote. Right sah, yeah, I'll watch a piece
- 5:36of this. I go on the shelf. This is a special experience now.
- 5:41And additionally, before home video market, Star Wars got rereleased and it
- 5:46kept adding to its box office. Well what if there was a way you
- 5:49could add to the box office in a similar fashion without having to pay a
- 5:54distributor. It's the original streaming when you think about it. Only the price
- 5:59point is it's higher for me because if you give it shiny new packaging,
- 6:03you talk about how great the transfer is, and here are some extras you
- 6:08cannot get on streaming. Well, you just baited the hook for a lot
- 6:13of people who say, oh yeah, but this is this is the anniversary
- 6:16addition. If they're really slick, If they're really slick, they find a
- 6:23way to make the like talk up the presentation that this is the only way
- 6:30you can get a certain type of experience or a certain type of sound is
- 6:33only on the disc because I cannot promise you the bandwidth, the bit rate
- 6:39necessary to get right Dolby surround sound to you. Well, and that's you
- 6:45know, I mean, anybody who knows anything about physical media in the first
- 6:48place knows that it's going to be the best presentation you can get because it's
- 6:53uncompressed. If they do the transfer to the disc right, if they do
- 6:57it on a big enough disc, you're going to have the best look.
- 7:01You know. I feel the same way, you know, thinking about this
- 7:05idea of you know what, I hope comes and they better give it to
- 7:10us. The Bad Match as well as the final season of the Clone Wars
- 7:15are both in four K. Now, the original Clone Wars series was not
- 7:19done in four K. This these seasons were so if they don't give us
- 7:25those in four K. I mean you're you're basically one, you're leaving money
- 7:30on the table because you're you're allowed to charge a higher price point and people
- 7:35will pay it. But two, you're depriving us as fans, the best
- 7:40version of those shows that deserve to be seen in that format, and that
- 7:46would be a travisty. You want to make the ultimate collector's edition that would
- 7:49make you so much money for Star Wars fans. And I know we're in
- 7:53the speculative here, and I'd probably cause any company to fold with any of
- 7:58my ideas, so I completely you know, hey, I you know,
- 8:01I may work in marketing, but that doesn't mean all of my ideas are
- 8:03good. But I would position myself to make a dollar and a cent release
- 8:09an addition of the complete Clone Wars. That's fine enough. You can bait
- 8:15the hook with that with long lost interviews with George Lucas from the making of
- 8:20and felony like stuff that would be really enticing to longtime fans. But additionally,
- 8:26you know how they love to release like alternate versions of stuff each season.
- 8:31You basically double up the disks, and let's say you have season one
- 8:37through whatever. Okay, by individuals. You can even break it out and
- 8:41buy individual seasons. And that's all released in release order, right, so
- 8:46that people like me who prefer that can can just do that release a complete
- 8:48set, and the discs are broken up, so you have a release order
- 8:54series of discs and a chronological series of discs with the movie worked in.
- 9:03Yep, there you go. You would have the gold rush bonanza of a
- 9:09lifetime. The only one that winds up sitting like completely out on its own,
- 9:13I think, would wind up being the final season, isn't it?
- 9:15Nothing is set during the earlier seasons in the final season, is it?
- 9:20It's been a while since Sun Up. Yeah, no, the final season
- 9:24all is I mean, it's all after the Clone Wars ended, which was
- 9:28the Soco walking away and and and I mean because even the lost missions,
- 9:35all of those took place. I think technically no, because well, for
- 9:39the lost missions, wasn't the the Five's arc had certain episodes that happened earlier
- 9:48in chronology. But regarless, this does allow you. Yeah, no,
- 9:56I think you're absolutely right, you know, And you know again, to
- 10:01me, I think them doing this is incredibly smart and it makes me very
- 10:05very happy, you know. I love to see the fact that you know,
- 10:09the Mandalorian getting the four K release, and I feel like, please,
- 10:15All I can say is, do not negate fans appreciation of animation in
- 10:20our desire to have animation in four K by not giving us those seasons that
- 10:26are in four K on that format, especially when you can see Disney at
- 10:31this point is doing the same thing with its original animated films and giving us
- 10:37in that presentation. Well, let me throw this out there too. It
- 10:41should be possible for them to upscale animation, Like wouldn't it lend itself to
- 10:46upscaling even better than live action? I mean, I'm sure you absolutely can
- 10:52make it happen and again. And that's where I think you know you want
- 10:56to do something incredibly cool and get fans. It's like to spend one hundred
- 11:01and twenty dollars give them every season of the Clone Wars, and the only
- 11:07way you can get it on four K is with the entire set. I
- 11:11mean, who's not going to buy that. I'm a notorious penny pincher and
- 11:16I would buy that the day. I would preorder it today if you promised
- 11:20it to me. Yep, I can talk myself out of any purchase on
- 11:24Earth. But that's one where I'd be like ooh ooh, yeah, yeah,
- 11:28I need that one. Well, I I just you know, when
- 11:31I think about this idea, and we were just talking about this, you
- 11:33know, before we started recording, and you know, going back to a
- 11:39thing that is important for every phantom, which is the feeling of ownership you
- 11:46have when you are able to pull out the disk and put it in and
- 11:48you watch that. There's something special about that, right, Like you know,
- 11:52I own the entire four K set of all nine Saga films because they
- 11:58can aim in a set. It's a really nice set, it was,
- 12:01and it's worth owning because I've got them all. I've got them in the
- 12:07best presentation that you can have them, you know, And so I think
- 12:13that's the thing to me that is exciting about this. I'm very excited,
- 12:18you know, to have the Mandalorian in this format. I've I've pre ordered
- 12:22them and like you said, you give fans the opportunity to do this,
- 12:26and you're just printing money. I mean, Disney again learned this very long
- 12:31time ago. You can print money by giving people the opportunity to own things,
- 12:37and you can do it multiple times. So you know, it's that's
- 12:43the brilliance I think of this move, because people are not going to stop
- 12:48subscribing to Disney Plus because they own the Mandalorian on disk, because they're still
- 12:56always the convenience. There's the new things that are coming out that they can
- 12:58still own and get there, you know. So that's that's going to be
- 13:03the case. But you're just going to be making extra money. And you
- 13:07know, if we've seen anything about Hollywood right now is they could use a
- 13:11little extra money. And given the fact that this will become relevant again,
- 13:16physical media becomes attractive all over akin because guess what no commercials? How sad
- 13:22is it that we have to point that one out? Yep? Yeah,
- 13:26that there you go, There you go, Which is another reason that people
- 13:31might go out and buy these sets because maybe they're going to a lower version
- 13:35of Disney plots where they're going to have commercials now and buying the set allows
- 13:41them to not have commercials when they want to watch their favorite Star Wars show.
- 13:45So yeah, it's a great it's a great thing. It's a it's
- 13:48a it's a it's a good announcement. I think it's good for fandom and
- 13:52I'm so excited that this is happening. But you know, John, if
- 13:56people wanted to see what else is happening with you these days, where would
- 14:00they catch up with you? Look for me Online's Castle Junkie. You should
- 14:03know that by now, And of course you can find me co hosting another
- 14:07show here on the network called House Lights with Tristan Riddell and Darren Moser.
- 14:11We have a good time with that. But also I have been known to
- 14:16appear in a show over on the TFM network called The six o two Club,
- 14:20which I believe is hosted by you, mister Matthew Rushing. Yes it
- 14:24is, and you can find me there. Of course, I'm all over
- 14:26social media under the Mount Rushing Zoe two. When I'm not in the six
- 14:30o two Club or doing aggressive negotiations, you can find me here on the
- 14:33Nerve Party Network with a completed show called owl Post doing that, did that
- 14:37with Drea Kaufman, as we talked about every single chapter of the Harry Potter
- 14:41series over on the TFM network. When I'm not in the six o two
- 14:45Club, you'll find me on Five Literary Tricks, The Orb Saddle Up,
- 14:48and The Artificial Tango but John, you know, I hear the chimes of
- 14:54the Jedi Temple. I think it's time for ice cream Sunday, a night
- 15:00which I'm really excited about. So I think it's time to close these negotiations.
- 15:03It's better than Lightsaber Taco Tuesday. Master Rushing. Negotiations are closed.
