- 1:37Speaker 6: more information. But everybody had a great weekend, and we'll
- 1:40Speaker 6: resist the temptation to say odd enough for you, because
- 1:43Speaker 6: I think we all know the answer to that. Had
- 1:47Speaker 6: scheduled former Charleston Mayor Danny Jones on the show today.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Danny last minute wasn't feeling up to it this morning,
- 1:54Speaker 6: completely understand. So we'll try to have Danny back on
- 1:56Speaker 6: again real soon, maybe next week. He is not here today.
- 2:01Speaker 6: We are going to talk a little sports though, because
- 2:03Speaker 6: I called up my buddy Jim Workman of the state's
- 2:06Speaker 6: premier sports publication, Wally and Whippy Sports Digest There's several
- 2:09Speaker 6: things we'll talk about in sports, including the fact that
- 2:12Speaker 6: as we speak right now at Marshall University may have
- 2:14Speaker 6: a new athletic director. Board of Governors was set to
- 2:16Speaker 6: me to d eight thirty this morning, I think it
- 2:18Speaker 6: was eight thirty, and that was the only item on
- 2:20Speaker 6: the agenda, and that was to approve the new contract
- 2:24Speaker 6: or to prove the hiring i should say, of a
- 2:26Speaker 6: new athletic director. So we'll see what happened there. I
- 2:28Speaker 6: haven't had a chance to check in. We'll talk to
- 2:30Speaker 6: Jim Workman about that, plus some other stuff going on
- 2:32Speaker 6: in sports, including tonight is the championship for this region
- 2:36Speaker 6: for the TBT, and it's the Best Virginia, the West
- 2:40Speaker 6: Virginia alumni team taking on shell Shocked. Love that name. It's,
- 2:45Speaker 6: as you may guess, a offshoot of the Marylon basketball
- 2:50Speaker 6: program and they are a pretty good team. So that's
- 2:51Speaker 6: happened to the Connell Steaming Convention Center tonight. So we'll
- 2:54Speaker 6: talk about that a little bit and plus a little
- 2:56Speaker 6: bit later on some political stuff, not with Jim, though
- 2:59Speaker 6: we spared Jim the political stuff. You can weigh in
- 3:02Speaker 6: on some things. I'm going to give some opinions on
- 3:04Speaker 6: Big Le Pigli Wiggly Hotline three zero four three four
- 3:06Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor Text three
- 3:09Speaker 6: zero four nine three five five zero zero way. I
- 3:12Speaker 6: feel like this should just become now a weekly feature
- 3:15Speaker 6: on the show, kind of like we have Danny on.
- 3:18Speaker 6: We had the adoption me please put it the week
- 3:19Speaker 6: on Friday. It's the Cross Lanes traffic situation. Uh, and
- 3:23Speaker 6: here to talk about that in a couple of other things.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Delegate Andy Shamlon, Good morning, sir, and welcome to the show.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Good morning, Dave. Good to be back.
- 3:30Speaker 6: You want to have your own segment every Monday, cross
- 3:33Speaker 6: Lanes Traffic with Andy Shamlin in the in the construction project.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I think I think that'd be good, but I'd have
- 3:38Speaker 3: more more questions than I have answered on.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Most What what what do you have to report? Because
- 3:44Speaker 6: you've been on, like I said, a couple of times
- 3:46Speaker 6: this month already with various single Uh what can what
- 3:49Speaker 6: what do you have to tell us today?
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well? I can report that the contractor should be starting
- 3:55Speaker 3: back any day now on the Cross Land Road project.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Okay, because because last time you were here, you addressed
- 4:02Speaker 6: some rumors Uh. And I've seen some things on social
- 4:05Speaker 6: media that you had to shoot down a little bit
- 4:06Speaker 6: as well, where people have people said, you know this,
- 4:10Speaker 6: that the funding was pulled and this isn't gonna happen,
- 4:12Speaker 6: and that that was not the case.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah. That, yeah, that it definitely is not the case.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And that has been one of the most persistent online rumors.
- 4:20Speaker 3: And and you know, I hear it in person when
- 4:22Speaker 3: I'm out. I was at Kroger's the other day and
- 4:24Speaker 3: Cross Lanes, and I had two people come up to
- 4:27Speaker 3: me and say, we know this project is canceled. And
- 4:30Speaker 3: I said, listen, the project is not canceled. I understand
- 4:33Speaker 3: why you think that it might be canceled because it
- 4:35Speaker 3: has taken so long to restart, But the project is
- 4:40Speaker 3: not canceled and it is moving forward. And I mean,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I anticipate any day now that you'll see full mobilization
- 4:48Speaker 3: of the contractor h to restart the project.
- 4:52Speaker 6: And again, you've explained this last couple of times that
- 4:55Speaker 6: you've been here. Uh, there was a delay. Explain again
- 4:58Speaker 6: what the delay was.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, the delay started back in October of twenty and
- 5:05Speaker 3: twenty four, and the project halted because of utility right
- 5:11Speaker 3: away relocation issues. And from October until now, basically almost
- 5:17Speaker 3: a year going one a year, there's been no activity
- 5:21Speaker 3: other than the utility companies relocating their polls and their infrastructure,
- 5:27Speaker 3: and there was some miscommunication and confusion between all the
- 5:31Speaker 3: entities involved. The change in administration from one governor to
- 5:35Speaker 3: the next didn't help the matter with changing in personnel,
- 5:40Speaker 3: and a couple of things just fell through the cracks,
- 5:42Speaker 3: and there were utilities that had not moved their infrastructure
- 5:49Speaker 3: and basically one utility company that had not and it
- 5:53Speaker 3: was actually a very small amount of infrastructure that was remaining.
- 5:57Speaker 3: But that's been remedied. That has been remedied now and
- 6:03Speaker 3: we are ready to get started.
- 6:05Speaker 6: So what exactly is the project? Well, I mean, do
- 6:09Speaker 6: they remember what it is they're doing? I'm kidding, but
- 6:12Speaker 6: I mean, but what is the whole project?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Well, the purpose of the project, it was tied to
- 6:17Speaker 3: the Roads to Prosperity bond, and the project is basically
- 6:22Speaker 3: to attempt to alleviate the traffic congestion. So from the
- 6:26Speaker 3: interstate to the four way stop, they're supposed to be
- 6:33Speaker 3: five lanes, that's my understanding. Five lanes. When this project
- 6:36Speaker 3: is completed with the turning lane in the middle and
- 6:39Speaker 3: then from the four way stop to Kroger Andrew Jackson
- 6:45Speaker 3: Middle School at the light four lanes. So that's the
- 6:50Speaker 3: purpose of the project. Now, another key aspect of it
- 6:53Speaker 3: was installing a large amount of drainage along along six
- 7:01Speaker 3: twenty two and various spots to try to alleviate some
- 7:04Speaker 3: of the flooding. And that's actually some of the first
- 7:07Speaker 3: steps of the project that have already been done. There's
- 7:11Speaker 3: still some drainage work also to be done with the project,
- 7:14Speaker 3: but the vast majority of that has been complete.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Yeah, because and that's folk Folks that live or work
- 7:20Speaker 6: or drive through that area know that anytime we get
- 7:22Speaker 6: some significant rain that frequently floods through there.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Correct, cross Lanes is filled with drainage issues.
- 7:27Speaker 6: Yeah, So how do we fix all that is? This
- 7:29Speaker 6: is project going to alleviate some of it.
- 7:30Speaker 3: It's going to alleviate some of it along the main road.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Okay, but not the back roads. Yeah. Okay. Talking to
- 7:36Speaker 6: deligate Andy Shamwin and we'll have you on again next
- 7:39Speaker 6: week for another update on the cross Lanes project. I
- 7:41Speaker 6: want to switch gears here. Oh, I do need to
- 7:43Speaker 6: remind you that the Dave Island showing five eighty. Live
- 7:45Speaker 6: is broad to you in parted by Live Healthy West Virginia,

- 7:53Speaker 6: wv metronews dot com the podcast menu. You do want
- 7:56Speaker 6: to switch gears here for a moment. This past Saturday,
- 7:59Speaker 6: the State Republican Party gathered in Morgantown and selected a
- 8:04Speaker 6: new chair. There were three people that were vying for
- 8:06Speaker 6: the position. Interviewed all three of them on Metro News Midday.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Uh and uh, it came down to two. I guess
- 8:12Speaker 6: that we're voted on West Perry and Delegate Josh Holstein
- 8:17Speaker 6: out of Boone County, And the folks in the room
- 8:19Speaker 6: chose not by a large margin, Delegate Holstein out of
- 8:24Speaker 6: Boone County. I know he's a counterpart of yours in
- 8:27Speaker 6: the legislature. How did everything you were up there? You're
- 8:29Speaker 6: an executive committee is how did everything go up there?
- 8:32Speaker 3: It was? It was a good meeting overall.
- 8:36Speaker 6: You said, overall overall?
- 8:37Speaker 3: Oh yeah, well, I know it would come as a
- 8:41Speaker 3: shock that sometimes executive committees don't agree with him.
- 8:43Speaker 6: What really would ever think. Well, but I mean that's
- 8:47Speaker 6: part of the process. I mean, if every I mean
- 8:49Speaker 6: the way I look at it is is if everybody
- 8:51Speaker 6: goes in and everybody agrees on everything, and you know,
- 8:54Speaker 6: you it's almost like a almost like a dictatorship for
- 8:57Speaker 6: lack of a better term, you know, very authority, Harrian,
- 9:00Speaker 6: you know where I mean, everybody gets you know, you
- 9:03Speaker 6: could have disagreements and everybody shakes hands hopefully and goes on.
- 9:06Speaker 3: That's right. And one of my favorite quotes has always been,
- 9:09Speaker 3: and it's attributed to Lyndon Johnson, if two men are
- 9:14Speaker 3: thinking alike on every issue, one man is thinking for
- 9:18Speaker 3: the other, because if we don't have some disagreement, then
- 9:23Speaker 3: that means we really aren't doing our due diligence on
- 9:28Speaker 3: any specific issues. And you know that the state party
- 9:32Speaker 3: chair race was very interesting because, as you mentioned, we
- 9:35Speaker 3: did have three candidates, and all three candidates were well spoken,
- 9:40Speaker 3: they presented themselves well, they worked to try to win
- 9:46Speaker 3: that position. And another thing that I really appreciated is
- 9:51Speaker 3: the two candidates at the end after the vote total
- 9:57Speaker 3: was finalized, they both congratulate Delegate Holsteing for winning the position.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So it really ended on a positive note, I think
- 10:06Speaker 3: for the party.
- 10:07Speaker 6: So exactly for those who may not have attended these things, exactly,
- 10:11Speaker 6: how are they chose? What's the process like?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Well, the process is every executive committee member state executive
- 10:19Speaker 3: committee committee members are there's an excess of just a ballpark,
- 10:27Speaker 3: there's an excess of one hundred and twenty Okay, okay,
- 10:29Speaker 3: So it's two members for each senatorial district. There's a
- 10:36Speaker 3: male and a female, and those are actually elected positions.
- 10:40Speaker 3: You have to run for that in the primary cycle,
- 10:44Speaker 3: and every member has a vote, and the votes are
- 10:50Speaker 3: taken this time by secret ballot. You wrote down the
- 10:56Speaker 3: name of the individual you were supporting on a piece
- 10:59Speaker 3: of paper, dropped it in a box, and then they
- 11:02Speaker 3: were tallied up.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Okay, all right, And in the end it came down
- 11:06Speaker 6: to mister Perry and mister Holstein and Josh Holstein, a
- 11:09Speaker 6: younger guy twenty three I think twenty three years old
- 11:13Speaker 6: out of Boom County. I've I've actually known him for
- 11:15Speaker 6: quite for quite some time. Uh, he's he's taken the
- 11:18Speaker 6: taking the reins of the party and I heard some
- 11:21Speaker 6: of his interview. I think Mike Nolton from Metro News
- 11:23Speaker 6: covered it. In person, and I actually heard some of
- 11:26Speaker 6: his interview when I was when I was driving. Then
- 11:28Speaker 6: this morning he talked about marketing, you know, doing a
- 11:30Speaker 6: little bit better job possibly of marketing the Republican Party.
- 11:33Speaker 6: What do you think he meant by that?
- 11:34Speaker 3: I think that is that has a couple of different
- 11:38Speaker 3: aspects to it. I think marketing is important. I also
- 11:42Speaker 3: think education is very important. And what I mean by
- 11:47Speaker 3: that is the fact that the Executive Committee voted in
- 11:50Speaker 3: the previous meeting or or in the meeting meal a
- 11:53Speaker 3: year ago, to close the Republican primary independence, which I
- 11:56Speaker 3: voted in opposition to. I don't support that. But now
- 11:59Speaker 3: that that decision has been made, and this was talked
- 12:02Speaker 3: about in in Josh's speech, which I commend him for,
- 12:06Speaker 3: we've got to make a conservative effort to make sure
- 12:09Speaker 3: that independents know that they are going to have to
- 12:12Speaker 3: change their registration if they want to participate in the
- 12:16Speaker 3: Republican primary.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Was that taken up this time? Reversing that because I
- 12:20Speaker 6: was told here's what I was told. I was told
- 12:23Speaker 6: that there is a big ground swell of support from
- 12:26Speaker 6: Republicans that they want to open the primaries back up again.
- 12:29Speaker 6: But then last week I started getting intel that said no,
- 12:32Speaker 6: that wasn't the case at all, and that the one
- 12:36Speaker 6: of the one of the one of the folks that
- 12:38Speaker 6: attended I talked. I talked to this person before the meeting.
- 12:42Speaker 6: They said that they didn't think it would be brought
- 12:44Speaker 6: up because something something changed, So it wasn't brought up.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure what changed exactly. I know what
- 12:50Speaker 3: I was told was that that was done by resolution.
- 12:54Speaker 3: And the Executive Committee has committees that fall under their
- 13:00Speaker 3: their auspice, so to say, and the Resolutions Committee did
- 13:04Speaker 3: not have the votes to take up a resolution.
- 13:08Speaker 6: To if you're at home, if you're driving, pull over
- 13:11Speaker 6: because you're gonna have to write this down. This is
- 13:13Speaker 6: going to require. Like you're a school teacher by trade,
- 13:15Speaker 6: what would you say, get out pen and paper.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Get out your pen and paper, take notes.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Do they still say that in public school? I did
- 13:21Speaker 6: just want to of course you do, all right, So
- 13:23Speaker 6: you said that you were that you were not originally
- 13:26Speaker 6: in favor if I heard you rite of closing the primary.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Basically what that means is is if I'm a registered independent,
- 13:32Speaker 6: you know, I could go in in the primary and
- 13:34Speaker 6: I could request a certain ballot I could say, well,
- 13:37Speaker 6: I'm an independent, but I want a Republican bout or
- 13:39Speaker 6: I want a Democrat abouter, whatever the case may be.
- 13:41Speaker 6: And they decided to do away with that. And one
- 13:43Speaker 6: of the reasons was is that they there was a
- 13:46Speaker 6: a I guess a large group of people within the
- 13:50Speaker 6: Republican Party that are concerned about their words rhinos and
- 13:54Speaker 6: people wrote, you know, that's Republican in name only, uh
- 13:57Speaker 6: and and I guess there's two arguments you know about that.
- 14:01Speaker 6: But but but you are somebody that was not in favor,
- 14:04Speaker 6: of course in the primaries. Why is that?
- 14:06Speaker 3: I think if you look at the majorities that we've
- 14:08Speaker 3: built politically in West Virginia, speaking of Republican majorities, I
- 14:14Speaker 3: don't think we could have done that without the support
- 14:16Speaker 3: of independence. And most of these legislative districts do not
- 14:21Speaker 3: have a majority of Republicans. You have, you know, what's
- 14:24Speaker 3: very common is say thirty five percent to forty percent
- 14:29Speaker 3: or registered Republicans. The next highest majority, say thirty are
- 14:34Speaker 3: independents and then Democrats. So in most districts, Republicans are
- 14:40Speaker 3: not even a majority yet. And I think if we
- 14:43Speaker 3: disenfranchise independent voters, kick them out of our primary. Over time,
- 14:48Speaker 3: I mean there may be some short term political gain
- 14:51Speaker 3: from that, because I do think some people will switch parties,
- 14:55Speaker 3: but I think long term, if Independence can only participate
- 14:59Speaker 3: in the Demomocratic primary, you're going to over time you're
- 15:04Speaker 3: going to help Democratic Party.
- 15:06Speaker 6: And I think this is especially true in southern West Virginia.
- 15:09Speaker 6: And I know of a couple of your counterparts of
- 15:12Speaker 6: the legislature that represent areas of southern West Virginia that
- 15:16Speaker 6: were full stop against this. You know that because they
- 15:18Speaker 6: said you don't want in particular told me you don't
- 15:20Speaker 6: realize how much this is going to hurt you in
- 15:23Speaker 6: Logan Boone, Mingo McDow, Wyoming counties right.
- 15:27Speaker 3: And and another component to this too, I think I'm
- 15:31Speaker 3: I have a unique perspective because you know, when I
- 15:34Speaker 3: register my students to vote, which is something I did
- 15:37Speaker 3: long before I was ever a candidate for the House,
- 15:41Speaker 3: most of them register as independents. Younger people do not
- 15:45Speaker 3: really want to be affiliated with either party, which you know,
- 15:48Speaker 3: I can understand on some level because our politics is
- 15:52Speaker 3: so toxic right now and younger people are not wanting
- 15:57Speaker 3: that party label right now. I realize you can make
- 15:59Speaker 3: an argument you say, well, if you don't want the
- 16:01Speaker 3: party label, then you shouldn't be able to participate. I
- 16:03Speaker 3: respect that argument, understand it. I just don't to me.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I weigh out the pros and cons, and they're far
- 16:11Speaker 3: more negatives as far as I'm concerned with closing the primary,
- 16:15Speaker 3: especially also when the Democrats have opened their primary, so
- 16:19Speaker 3: they can participate in the Democratic primary, but they can
- 16:22Speaker 3: in the Republican.
- 16:22Speaker 6: And so when you go in and you know you're
- 16:24Speaker 6: only going to be able to vote for non nonpartisan races,
- 16:28Speaker 6: you know, I mean, and so be happy with with
- 16:32Speaker 6: voting for school boards and judicial stuff because that's all.
- 16:35Speaker 6: And I guess resolutions, if there's an amendment on the
- 16:37Speaker 6: ballot or something like that, they'd be pretty much Yet, Hey, Dell,
- 16:40Speaker 6: to get cham I appreciate your perspective, not only on
- 16:43Speaker 6: cross Lanes, not only on the Republican, you know, the
- 16:47Speaker 6: whole thing with the with the with the convention this
- 16:49Speaker 6: weekend and we'll be talking to you again probably in
- 16:52Speaker 6: the future, hopefully, hopefully we'll get everything moving there and
- 16:54Speaker 6: cross Lanes sounds good, Dave. And when schools start Kanawa County.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Too soon too, soone week of August, I believe it's
- 17:01Speaker 3: August the fifteenth for student.
- 17:03Speaker 6: All right, so you're getting the game plan when to
- 17:04Speaker 6: the when staff for report by the eleventh. All right,
- 17:06Speaker 6: so you're you're getting the getting the game face on
- 17:09Speaker 6: tog right, we're getting ready to go edgemcate young minds.
- 17:11Speaker 3: That's right, at least try to.

- 20:14Speaker 11: Hey, no man, doing much better than the last time
- 20:17Speaker 11: I talked.
- 20:18Speaker 6: To you, do you? I mean, you know I called
- 20:19Speaker 6: Jim a couple of weeks ago because we had something
- 20:21Speaker 6: particularly I wanted to talk about, and you were having
- 20:24Speaker 6: like a medical procedure done right that you want to
- 20:28Speaker 6: talk about. We don't need the details, the glory details.
- 20:30Speaker 11: I won't. I won't do the details. But kidney stones
- 20:33Speaker 11: are not fun, okay? And it led to a week
- 20:37Speaker 11: of watching the Billie's Old documentary, a lot of Cincinnati
- 20:42Speaker 11: Red's games and what else, how Happy Gilmour Too, which
- 20:46Speaker 11: set me back several years.
- 20:50Speaker 6: It's just you know what's funny is I watched Happy
- 20:55Speaker 6: Gilbour one over the weekend because I you know, I thought,
- 20:58Speaker 6: because I know Steve Animal for our sister Station ninety
- 21:01Speaker 6: ate seven a mouth, and I mean it's just like
- 21:02Speaker 6: gone with the Wind to him, you know, with uh
- 21:05Speaker 6: tells you a lot about Steve Animal.
- 21:06Speaker 12: Uh.
- 21:07Speaker 6: Well as it comes to the Happy Gilmore movie. And
- 21:09Speaker 6: so I watched the first one, and after watching the
- 21:13Speaker 6: first one again, I thought, I don't know if I
- 21:16Speaker 6: want to see the second one or not. What's your
- 21:17Speaker 6: review of Happy Gilmore Too?
- 21:19Speaker 11: I think that is a great decision. Watch Happy Gilmore
- 21:22Speaker 11: one and don't watch Happy Gilmore too.
- 21:26Speaker 6: I mean, it's not exactly Felini we're talking about here.
- 21:29Speaker 6: These are these are fun, feel good movies here.
- 21:32Speaker 11: You're right, And you know I went into it feeling
- 21:35Speaker 11: that and thinking that, and I was still like stunned.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Okay, it's it's bad. Stunned by how bad it was.
- 21:41Speaker 6: It's bad. Uh So your health is better now.
- 21:44Speaker 11: Yes, I'm feeling much better, and uh you know, the
- 21:48Speaker 11: after care part of that is over now. And yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 11: I'm gonna watch what I eat and drink. I believe,
- 21:53Speaker 11: I hope.
- 21:54Speaker 6: Okay, that's part of the anatomy that I'm not comfortable
- 21:57Speaker 6: in talking about. Just so you know, I'm I'm glad
- 22:00Speaker 6: you better. So you said, I know you're a Reds guy.
- 22:03Speaker 6: You complimented me on my red shirt. I love on today.
- 22:06Speaker 6: All right, So talk about where the Reds are right now.
- 22:09Speaker 11: I tell you what, I'm excited about where they are
- 22:11Speaker 11: because they're winning. I mean, I think they're seven and
- 22:14Speaker 11: three over the last ten games. They've got a tough
- 22:17Speaker 11: stretch coming this week, they got the Dodgers coming in,
- 22:20Speaker 11: but they are six and a half games out of
- 22:23Speaker 11: first place.
- 22:24Speaker 6: I know a lot of people have been talking.
- 22:25Speaker 11: About the wild card, and they're one game out of
- 22:28Speaker 11: the wild card right now. But think about this. They
- 22:32Speaker 11: in the Central Division in the National League. You've got
- 22:35Speaker 11: the Cubs and the Brewers. They're tied for first. They're
- 22:40Speaker 11: playing each other three game series this week. So there's
- 22:44Speaker 11: a chance that the Reds can gain some ground. And
- 22:48Speaker 11: you know, if you get you know, four games out
- 22:51Speaker 11: of first place at this point in the season, right
- 22:54Speaker 11: before the trade deadline, I think you're.
- 22:56Speaker 6: In good shape.
- 22:57Speaker 9: Man.
- 22:57Speaker 11: I know that the schedule's shaping up to be a
- 22:59Speaker 11: little bit tough, but the Reds are really playing good
- 23:02Speaker 11: ball right now. They're getting some timely hitting. You know,
- 23:05Speaker 11: they only scored two runs yesterday, but they only needed to. Yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 11: they won two to one. But when they need runs,
- 23:11Speaker 11: they're able to manufacture some runs. They weren't, as Terry
- 23:14Speaker 11: Francona said after the game yesterday, they weren't knocking the
- 23:17Speaker 11: ball around the yard yesterday. But you know, if the
- 23:21Speaker 11: need arises, they can do that as well. I think
- 23:24Speaker 11: things are shape enough for it to be a really
- 23:25Speaker 11: nice summer in Cincinnati.
- 23:27Speaker 6: We're talking to Jim Workman again of Wally Wimpy's a
- 23:29Speaker 6: Dave Allen Show and five eighty Live is brought to
- 23:31Speaker 6: you part by Morgan Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Rin Baker, WVU athletic director, got a contract extension that
- 23:39Speaker 6: was actually announced live on talk line with the Meadows
- 23:41Speaker 6: and Wilson as they were interviewing doctor Michael Benson. But
- 23:44Speaker 6: who president a WVU? What do you think? What's you
- 23:46Speaker 6: take on that?
- 23:47Speaker 11: I like that, I mean, I like stability. I mean,
- 23:50Speaker 11: right now, in college athletics, stability is rare, I think,
- 23:55Speaker 11: especially with coaches and players moving. But to have somebody
- 24:00Speaker 11: as an athletic director that has already really proven himself.
- 24:04Speaker 11: He's accomplished quite a bit in his short time at
- 24:07Speaker 11: West Virginia, I think, I mean, who else you going
- 24:10Speaker 11: to get that's as good as Rin Baker. I think
- 24:14Speaker 11: that it's good to sign him and to let him
- 24:17Speaker 11: continue his good work that he's I think it's an
- 24:21Speaker 11: exciting time to be in Morgantown right now.
- 24:23Speaker 6: I've talked to you in the past about the excitement
- 24:25Speaker 6: about the WVU football program, and I'm driving into works
- 24:28Speaker 6: twenty and I sixty four and I look up and
- 24:29Speaker 6: I see rich Rod on a giant billboard. He says,
- 24:32Speaker 6: this is Mountain their football. There's still a lot, a
- 24:36Speaker 6: lot of excitement around this team. I believe so too.
- 24:39Speaker 11: I mean, again, things have changed in college football, and
- 24:43Speaker 11: he's got a lot of new players, but I think
- 24:46Speaker 11: the attitude is what people are excited about. I mean,
- 24:49Speaker 11: rich Rod and his coaching staff are bringing that attitude
- 24:53Speaker 11: back from seventeen, eighteen, twenty years ago, and I think
- 24:57Speaker 11: that's exactly what people are excited about.
- 25:00Speaker 6: I talked about this with Tom Bragg at the Midday
- 25:01Speaker 6: Show the other day, and I think maybe you and
- 25:02Speaker 6: I have talked about it as well. I think there
- 25:04Speaker 6: was a feeling, uh in Morgantown from a lot of
- 25:07Speaker 6: the older guys, the guys, the alumni, the a lot
- 25:10Speaker 6: of the players that under maybe under Neil Brown, maybe
- 25:14Speaker 6: under Dana Holgerson. Not saying that I mean, because Neil
- 25:17Speaker 6: Brown was just such a nice guy, but I mean Holgerson, Okay,
- 25:21Speaker 6: uh So my experiences with him were not great, but
- 25:26Speaker 6: they didn't really feel welcome. I had Joe's Wet on
- 25:30Speaker 6: the show a couple of weeks ago, and he talked
- 25:32Speaker 6: about that they said, you know, us old guys just
- 25:34Speaker 6: didn't feel like that, that they didn't really roll out
- 25:37Speaker 6: the red carpet for us. And that's something that rich
- 25:40Speaker 6: Rod is is real big because he gets it. Yeah,
- 25:42Speaker 6: I think you're right.
- 25:43Speaker 11: I think the that was the the feeling that a
- 25:47Speaker 11: lot of the players had, and I think that there
- 25:50Speaker 11: was something to it. But you know, when you got
- 25:53Speaker 11: guys that played under rich Rod and had great success
- 25:58Speaker 11: and they've moved on and there they've coming, they're coming
- 26:01Speaker 11: back and creating that team again. I mean, one thing
- 26:05Speaker 11: about the attitude is rich Rod has said repeatedly that
- 26:10Speaker 11: you're going to work hard and you know, beyond your abilities,
- 26:14Speaker 11: beyond you know, trying to put a roster together with
- 26:18Speaker 11: certain players. You're going to work hard and if you
- 26:21Speaker 11: can't handle that hard work, you're not going to make it.
- 26:23Speaker 11: And I think that's where it starts with West Virginia football,
- 26:26Speaker 11: and I think that's what people are excited about.
- 26:29Speaker 9: Talking to you.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Jim Workman of Wally Wimpy's down the Road in Huntington.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Gerald Harrison is new to be named the Marshall Athletic
- 26:37Speaker 6: Director and I don't know their board of governors was
- 26:41Speaker 6: going to meet at eight thirty this morning, and that
- 26:43Speaker 6: I'm told that was the only item on the agenda.
- 26:45Speaker 6: I don't know that they've actually announced that publicly yet, right,
- 26:49Speaker 6: But you're and he's just a guy that's coming in
- 26:52Speaker 6: from Austin P, Austin pH. He'd been there for some time.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Your your thoughts on that possible hire, which looks like
- 26:59Speaker 6: it's going to happen. Yep.
- 27:00Speaker 11: Well, I'm looking for a press release. Don't see it yet.
- 27:04Speaker 11: Expect that's going to happen. That's been the rumor. I mean,
- 27:07Speaker 11: I don't know anything about him. I mean, but then again,
- 27:10Speaker 11: we didn't know anything about Charles Huff when he came in.
- 27:13Speaker 11: I know, this is Austin P. Is not a d
- 27:17Speaker 11: one or you know, a premier conference. They don't come
- 27:22Speaker 11: from a premier conference, So I don't know. I mean,
- 27:25Speaker 11: he did spend some time at Duke, he did spend
- 27:28Speaker 11: some time at another power for but I don't know.
- 27:32Speaker 11: The jury's kind of out. I mean, I want to
- 27:35Speaker 11: see the introduction of him and to see what type
- 27:38Speaker 11: of energy brings and what his ideas are. Of course,
- 27:41Speaker 11: so we'll give him a chance.
- 27:43Speaker 6: Well, you know, and when I had Tom Bragg on
- 27:45Speaker 6: the show. We talked about this on Friday. I met
- 27:47Speaker 6: your news midday. Something I didn't realize when he was
- 27:49Speaker 6: at Duke, mister Harrison, Gerald Harrison actually was in charge
- 27:55Speaker 6: of all the budgets, not just the athletic department, if
- 27:58Speaker 6: it was budgetary at Duke. From what Tom Bragg says,
- 28:01Speaker 6: and don't have any reason doubt him because he's the
- 28:04Speaker 6: great Tom Bragg. From what he says, he handled everything
- 28:08Speaker 6: down there. And I say that because a big part,
- 28:11Speaker 6: the biggest part these used to be athletic directors in college. Jim.
- 28:14Speaker 6: You know, you take care of the scheduling, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 6: you take care of for so now it's all about fundraising.
- 28:19Speaker 6: I mean that's that's the job of an athletic director
- 28:21Speaker 6: with Nil and everything it's about it's all about it's
- 28:24Speaker 6: all about the money now because and you're also looking
- 28:26Speaker 6: at Marshall's got I mean, how many new players this year.
- 28:29Speaker 6: I mean that you're not going to recognize bunch of
- 28:31Speaker 6: the players. I mean, I mean Huff took half the
- 28:34Speaker 6: team with him, you know, when he went down South.
- 28:37Speaker 6: So that's a big part of it. Now, it really is,
- 28:39Speaker 6: and you know it's it's gonna be tough.
- 28:41Speaker 11: I mean, Marshall's gonna always be second in the state
- 28:45Speaker 11: of West Virginia, the West Virginia, There's no question about that.
- 28:49Speaker 11: Except for their alumni. You know, people that have a
- 28:52Speaker 11: connection to Huntington or a connection to Marshall University, especially
- 28:55Speaker 11: the sports program, that is who you're gonna have to
- 28:58Speaker 11: hit up. So I hope that they can, you know,
- 29:02Speaker 11: bring in the Chad Pennington's, the Byron Left, which is
- 29:06Speaker 11: all those famous alumni, and maybe do some fundraising. And
- 29:10Speaker 11: you know, success always helps too. Yeah, if you have
- 29:13Speaker 11: success on the field, people want to come out and
- 29:15Speaker 11: watch you, they want to give. So, you know, let's
- 29:19Speaker 11: pray that the Marshall Thundering Herd do not have a
- 29:22Speaker 11: bad season. I mean, there's it's kind of lining up.
- 29:25Speaker 11: A lot of people are picking them, maybe even last
- 29:27Speaker 11: in the Sun Belt because of the exodus of all
- 29:30Speaker 11: the players with Southern Miss with Charles Huff.
- 29:33Speaker 6: But they got to have.
- 29:34Speaker 11: A decent season and let's see Tony Gibson rally the
- 29:37Speaker 11: troops and and hopefully they can put themselves in a
- 29:41Speaker 11: good position to raise some funds that are much needed
- 29:44Speaker 11: right now in college athletics.
- 29:47Speaker 6: I will say this too. It is kind of cool
- 29:50Speaker 6: just as a sports fan to look on the sidelines
- 29:54Speaker 6: and know that here in a few weeks we're going
- 29:55Speaker 6: to be looking at rich Rod from Morgantown. You can
- 29:57Speaker 6: be looking at Tony Gibson, the pride of van West Virginia,
- 30:00Speaker 6: on the sidelines for the premier football programs in the
- 30:03Speaker 6: state of West Virginia. That you got rich Rod and
- 30:05Speaker 6: you got Tony Gibson. Yeah.
- 30:07Speaker 11: You know, Tony has a really good resume, and it's
- 30:11Speaker 11: really surprising to me to see that his career ended
- 30:15Speaker 11: up being head coach at Marshall because you know, he
- 30:18Speaker 11: was a defensive coordinator that was, you know, in demand
- 30:23Speaker 11: all of his career. He had a lot of good success.
- 30:25Speaker 11: Of course, he's really known as a mountaineer, but you know,
- 30:30Speaker 11: he gets his chance just like Doc Holliday did. Really,
- 30:32Speaker 11: it's kind of Doc part two because Doc had the
- 30:36Speaker 11: same kind of resume. He's a WVU guy, he's a
- 30:39Speaker 11: Hurricane guy, and he ended up having some good seasons
- 30:42Speaker 11: in Huntington as well. So we hope the best for Tony.
- 30:47Speaker 11: But it's probably the toughest time right now to build
- 30:50Speaker 11: a football program from scratch.
- 30:52Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, you're absolutely right about that. Twenty two
- 30:54Speaker 6: minutes away from ten older. It alts to protect themselves
- 30:56Speaker 6: against severe respiratory disease. Talk to your doctor about flu,
- 30:59Speaker 6: covid now team and RSV vaccines, riskless, do more, get
- 31:03Speaker 6: started vaccines dot gov pete for by the US Department
- 31:05Speaker 6: of Health and Human Services. Before we let you go,
- 31:07Speaker 6: TVT the Basketball Championship is continuing tonight at Kyle sum
- 31:12Speaker 6: And Convention Center. We'll have caverage, of course, all over
- 31:15Speaker 6: Metro News. And it's this team that Best Virginia is
- 31:19Speaker 6: playing is called shell Shocked. Yeah, love that name, play
- 31:22Speaker 6: off the Terrapins name out of Maryland. It's a good team.
- 31:24Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, it's the TPT is so fun. I mean,
- 31:28Speaker 11: I've attended anytime they've been in Charleston, and the atmosphere
- 31:31Speaker 11: has been great. The crowds were down a little bit,
- 31:35Speaker 11: I believe, in the first couple of rounds in Charleston,
- 31:37Speaker 11: but I'm expecting that they're going to pick up tonight
- 31:40Speaker 11: because you know, it's it's a nationally televised game. You
- 31:43Speaker 11: get the show off Charleston, the competition is a little
- 31:47Speaker 11: bit bigger, and you know, again it's just so much fun.
- 31:51Speaker 11: I love the elam ending. I mean, just a big
- 31:53Speaker 11: fan of that. If you don't know what that is
- 31:56Speaker 11: as a college, as a basketball fan, watch it tonight
- 32:00Speaker 11: because it's it changes the game in a good way.
- 32:03Speaker 11: You know, I'm not always a type of guy that loves,
- 32:07Speaker 11: you know, straying from tradition, but uh, the elam ending
- 32:11Speaker 11: has changed basketball for the better.
- 32:14Speaker 6: Do you think do you see it? I mean, because
- 32:17Speaker 6: it's it's kind of exclusive to the TBT and things
- 32:19Speaker 6: like that, do you do you see an opportunity at
- 32:21Speaker 6: some point for you know, that to be instituted maybe
- 32:23Speaker 6: in some other leagues. Maybe it's like I don't think
- 32:25Speaker 6: it's going to be NBA or D one college, but
- 32:27Speaker 6: I mean maybe some some some higher places than than
- 32:30Speaker 6: the than the tb T.
- 32:31Speaker 11: I think the only reason why they would not implement
- 32:34Speaker 11: the elam ending is pride, you know that they didn't
- 32:37Speaker 11: think of it first, because I mean, it's absolutely the
- 32:40Speaker 11: best thing for basketball, because the worst part of basketball
- 32:44Speaker 11: was the last four minutes of the game, where people
- 32:46Speaker 11: were out each other exactly. This change is it makes
- 32:49Speaker 11: it more fun, more competitive.
- 32:52Speaker 6: I forgot to mention when I because I'm so used
- 32:54Speaker 6: to saying Jim Workman and wall and whippies. I forgot
- 32:56Speaker 6: to say president of the Western or head of the
- 32:59Speaker 6: Westernion Sports Writers Association. Yeah, executive direct executive director of the.
- 33:03Speaker 11: West Virginia Sports Writers Association. I want people to go
- 33:07Speaker 11: to wv sw A dot org. That's the Sports Writers
- 33:11Speaker 11: Association website.
- 33:13Speaker 6: We're building that.
- 33:14Speaker 11: There's a ton of history on West Virginia sports in there,
- 33:17Speaker 11: and uh, it's it's really worth your while and we're
- 33:21Speaker 11: continuing to add to it. So if it has to
- 33:25Speaker 11: do with sports in West Virginia you've got a question,
- 33:28Speaker 11: it's a good place to go.
- 33:30Speaker 6: Well, on your way out the door, speaking of sports history,
- 33:33Speaker 6: then of the last office that you see on your
- 33:35Speaker 6: way out of the out of the building here, eleven
- 33:37Speaker 6: eleven is Fred Persinger's office, So you might want to
- 33:39Speaker 6: stick your head in there, and it's just ask ask
- 33:42Speaker 6: Fred for some contributions. He's the man, he's friend's the man.
- 33:46Speaker 6: You're also the man. I appreciate you being here, Glad
- 33:48Speaker 6: that you're back to back to semi normal, Appreciate that.
- 33:50Speaker 6: Ready to cheer on your Cleveland Browns. Well this season,
- 33:54Speaker 6: we'll see I spent a lot of time this past
- 33:57Speaker 6: week Ady watching the NFL Network because they were doing
- 34:00Speaker 6: and that, you know, live from the different training camps.
- 34:03Speaker 13: Uh.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Did you see what happened? And I'll let you go
- 34:05Speaker 6: on this. Did you see the uh what happened in
- 34:08Speaker 6: the Cowboys camp?
- 34:09Speaker 12: No?
- 34:10Speaker 6: Well, dak through some interceptions, okay, I mean and Cowboy
- 34:13Speaker 6: fans were already you know, suicidal over that. Right now.
- 34:16Speaker 6: It's it's training camp and one of the one of
- 34:19Speaker 6: the guys I don't remember who it was that intercepted
- 34:21Speaker 6: do pass he he he, and the other defensive players
- 34:25Speaker 6: go over to the sidelines and pick up a kid
- 34:28Speaker 6: that was there cheering it on, and they just carry
- 34:30Speaker 6: the kid around. It was a great moment in sports.
- 34:32Speaker 6: I mean, if you like that. The kid kid was
- 34:34Speaker 6: loving it like a three or four year old kid.
- 34:35Speaker 6: They just went and picked him up and you know,
- 34:37Speaker 6: carried him around. There's good stuff there.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Wow.
- 34:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:39Speaker 11: I've actually been to the Cowboys training camp and Oxnard before. Really, yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 11: I've been. I was out that way went one day.
- 34:46Speaker 11: It was when Bill Parcells was the head coach and
- 34:49Speaker 11: Sean Payton was the offensive coordinator. So it was a
- 34:53Speaker 11: fun time. I've been to a few training camps, so
- 34:55Speaker 11: uh also, if you got a moment, Yeah, JJ roberts
- 34:59Speaker 11: from Cable Midland went to Marshall. You know, he went
- 35:03Speaker 11: the Wake Forest at first, but now he's an undrafted
- 35:06Speaker 11: free agent at Tampa Bay. He's in the training camp
- 35:08Speaker 11: and there's articles out there saying that he's going to
- 35:11Speaker 11: make the team.
- 35:12Speaker 6: That's awesome because I had an opportunity to work on
- 35:16Speaker 6: a project with JJ robertson. You've known him and his
- 35:18Speaker 6: family for some time. What a quality young man. I mean,
- 35:22Speaker 6: this is the kind of guy that you really want
- 35:24Speaker 6: to see succeed, especially with his story and the fact
- 35:28Speaker 6: that he was undrafted, and like I read the same thing,
- 35:30Speaker 6: he's probably going to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Yep.
- 35:33Speaker 11: He's real versatile, which probably is because of his time
- 35:36Speaker 11: at Wake nd Marshall. But not only is he safety,
- 35:39Speaker 11: but they are trying him at Nickel, so you know,
- 35:43Speaker 11: having that versatility is going to help him make that team.
- 35:46Speaker 11: And he's going to be with Baker Mayfield. All Right,
- 35:48Speaker 11: you're a guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Hey, I like Baker
- 35:52Speaker 11: all right.

- 50:14Speaker 6: questions of the Democratic Party is at thirty four percent
- 50:18Speaker 6: in America.
- 50:18Speaker 7: Yes, so, mister president. We don't like the way you're
- 50:20Speaker 7: doing things. We don't approve of the economy, we don't
- 50:22Speaker 7: approve of the terrorists, but we still like you more
- 50:24Speaker 7: than we like the Democrats. That's the basic political story
- 50:27Speaker 7: that we have right now. And just talk about being lost.
- 50:30Speaker 7: I mean, what's this call it? They're lost the national
- 50:32Speaker 7: Democratic part, they're lost. I would one hundred percent agree
- 50:36Speaker 7: with that. And I don't see. And here's the thing
- 50:38Speaker 7: about it, TJ. And I know you and I are
- 50:42Speaker 7: usually on the same page on most things. Not on
- 50:44Speaker 7: all things, but on most things. You and I are
- 50:45Speaker 7: on the same page.
- 50:47Speaker 6: Like it or not. The face of the faces, if
- 50:52Speaker 6: you will, of the Democratic Party are people like AOC.
- 50:56Speaker 6: They're people like Bernie Sanders. I know he's not not,
- 51:00Speaker 6: you know, technically a Democrat, but he causes with him,
- 51:02Speaker 6: he's an independent. That those are the faces of the
- 51:06Speaker 6: Democratic Party. And anybody that screams that it's it's racism, well,
- 51:10Speaker 6: you can't get more white than Bernie Sanders.
- 51:12Speaker 7: Is on the far left. Base loves her, and they're
- 51:15Speaker 7: voting with their pocketbooks. Yeah, she has raised millions upon
- 51:18Speaker 7: millions upon millions of dollars for her next run, whereas
- 51:22Speaker 7: the average Joe Blow Democrat in the House has raised
- 51:25Speaker 7: a couple hundred thousand dollars. So you know, her base
- 51:28Speaker 7: loves her. The problem is Dave the base isn't big enough.
- 51:31Speaker 7: The base is not big enough. So you get outside
- 51:33Speaker 7: that context and she fails.
- 51:35Speaker 6: And the base still doesn't realize why Donald Trump won
- 51:39Speaker 6: in the first place. That's the thing. They still don't
- 51:41Speaker 6: realize that. And a great number of Democrats are saying
- 51:46Speaker 6: the same thing. They're saying, if we're going to take
- 51:50Speaker 6: back America or have a chance to even be relevant
- 51:52Speaker 6: in America, we got to distance ourselves from A and now.
- 51:54Speaker 6: And what do they do in New York They in
- 51:57Speaker 6: the primary elect A or move forward. I should say,
- 52:00Speaker 6: a democratic socialist. That's not gonna do it.
- 52:04Speaker 7: In the financial capital of the world, we have a
- 52:08Speaker 7: democratic socialist nominated from here.
- 52:10Speaker 6: Quick text read this quote from Trump. Ask all your
- 52:13Speaker 6: Republican friends about it. I've known Jeff Epstein for fifteen years.
- 52:16Speaker 6: Terrific guy, he told The New York Magazine in twenty
- 52:18Speaker 6: two thousand and two. A lot of fun to be with.
- 52:20Speaker 6: It's even said that he likes beautiful women as much
- 52:22Speaker 6: as I do. Many of them are on the younger side.
- 52:24Speaker 6: That was a quote, according to a textar I had
- 52:26Speaker 6: been a chance to look that up from mister Trump.
- 52:31Speaker 6: All right, real quick, what you got on the show.
- 52:33Speaker 7: Today, new GOFP chair Josh Holstein joins us at ten
