- 0:01What happens when you have two people who come from entirely
- 0:04different backgrounds and who have entirely different
- 0:07preferences when it comes to money?
- 0:09Well, typically they get married, they start a business
- 0:12together, or they have kids together and here we go.
- 0:15The real reason that we have clashes when it comes to our
- 0:19personal finances and it has nothing to do with a budget.
- 0:22Today we're going to talk about different scenarios where we
- 0:25have different money personalities in relationship.
- 0:28The truth is you think think that everybody's like you when
- 0:32it comes to money and we have a lot of financial experts out
- 0:35there who think that everybody should be just like them and it
- 0:38just doesn't work that way because of these money
- 0:41personalities. Also, like I talked about in my
- 0:43new book, Stop Budgeting, Start Living, there are different
- 0:46financial set points that people have.
- 0:48Some of you were born in worlds of abundance.
- 0:51You never had to worry about money.
- 0:53Your needs were taken care of. You had your needs and wants
- 0:56always given to you. Many of you also grew up in a
- 0:59world of scarcity where you didn't even know where your next
- 1:02meal was coming from. You watched your parents work
- 1:05really, really hard for what they have.
- 1:07And guess what happens? You end up marrying each other.
- 1:10And then you put a budget on top of that.
- 1:12And you think that the budget is going to be the solution to your
- 1:14financial life and it just isn't.
- 1:16So 3 scenarios we're going to talk about today, why those
- 1:20money personalities clash and you're going to learn a lot
- 1:23about yourself and other people. So let's get started.
- 1:26First, let's talk about what the money personalities are.
- 1:29The money personalities, the ones that I use today, were
- 1:33created by Robin Crane. You can look her up
- 1:35robincrane.com. And she helped me understand
- 1:38that these money personalities really influence the way that we
- 1:41make decisions when it comes to our money.
- 1:44So there are five in my world, Dreamer, Saver, Giver, spender,
- 1:49and Avoider, and each of them have different beliefs and
- 1:54behaviors when it comes to money.
- 1:56Did you know that right now? Actually, if you're curious
- 1:58about what your money personality is, go to
- 2:00lisachastain.com/quiz and take the money personality and then
- 2:04you can follow along. You'll know what your money
- 2:06personality is. All right, back to business in a
- 2:10couple situation. I see this over and over again
- 2:12that opposites attract. So we have dreamer, saver,
- 2:15giver, spender, avoider, and a lot of times I have my spenders
- 2:20who attract savers and vice versa.
- 2:23While our spender money personality are people who love
- 2:25to spend money, spending money makes them feel abundant.
- 2:29In the world of personal finance, spenders have gotten a
- 2:32really bad rap and they're the ones that are getting shamed
- 2:35over and over again. Listen, there's nothing wrong
- 2:37with spending. Our entire economy is built and
- 2:40founded on people spending money.
- 2:42And if you think that it's just women spending money, you're
- 2:45wrong. We all have different money
- 2:48personalities, and I see just as many spender money personalities
- 2:51as I do saver money personalities.
- 2:54So what happens when a saver marries A spender?
- 2:57Saver money personalities tend to come from scarcity.
- 3:00Guess what? It's not just about saving money
- 3:03all the time. These are people who perhaps
- 3:05were raised in a lot of financial scarcity and they
- 3:09operate from scarcity, which also means that savers tend to
- 3:12operate from a not enough conversation.
- 3:15And if you're operating from a place of not enough or fear or
- 3:19scarcity, you're going to be creating that all over your
- 3:21life. Also, our saver clients tend to
- 3:24overanalyze the shit out of finances.
- 3:26They wait before making decisions, They research before
- 3:29making decisions. That's a DIF.
- 3:31There's behaviors, researching, waiting, analyzing.
- 3:35There's also the belief system that goes behind that, and
- 3:38typically what I see with my Saber clients is that they were
- 3:41born from a mindset of fear and scarcity when it comes to money.
- 3:45Spenders are people who were their financial set points.
- 3:49A lot of times are our abundance movement, freedom they value,
- 3:54that's important to them, and spending money does not trigger
- 3:57them like savers. So these two people get married,
- 4:01a saver marries A spender, and this happens all across the
- 4:05board in the different money personalities.
- 4:06But we're going to use these two right now because they're
- 4:08complete opposites. So a saver marries A spender,
- 4:12and all of a sudden the saver wants to research and analyze
- 4:16and have a budget in place and control the spender because
- 4:20spending freaks them out. Listen, this does not work in
- 4:24relationships. A lot of times when people get
- 4:26to me in my office, I've got the saver who's in breakdown, who's
- 4:31really frustrated, who's trying to control the spender and
- 4:35teaching them how to budget, and the spender wants nothing to do
- 4:38with it. My husband's a spender.
- 4:40Not spending money is not an option for a spender.
- 4:45Their value system is connected to movement and freedom.
- 4:49These are people who think abundantly.
- 4:51You'll hear them say things like I'll always go out and make more
- 4:53money. Making money is a strength of a
- 4:56spender. Typically savers are good at
- 5:00analyzing, but they don't always do a great job of sales.
- 5:03They don't do a great job of making more money.
- 5:05They don't do a great job of negotiating.
- 5:06A lot of times very different kinds of of people and then
- 5:11where they're married, all of a sudden the saver wants to hold
- 5:14the spender back, the spender wants more freedom, and then all
- 5:17you're due is fighting about values and preferences.
- 5:20A budget is only going to make this worse.
- 5:23So if you're a saver and your partner's a spender or vice
- 5:27versa, here's some things that I want you to think about in this
- 5:30moment. Today, spenders realize that
- 5:33spending money triggers your partner's nervous system.
- 5:37There is something about the way that they make decisions where
- 5:40they might need more time, they might need more research.
- 5:43So you have to realize that this is a part of their anatomy.
- 5:47It's not going to change. But also you can do some things
- 5:51to help them and encourage them in making decisions.
- 5:54And one of those things is asking really powerful
- 5:56questions. Ask your saver partner, ask your
- 6:00saver significant other, hey, how does this make you feel
- 6:03before I do it? Are you going to be OK with it?
- 6:06And what do you need to know? That's another one.
- 6:09What do you need to know before I make this decision?
- 6:13Now the beauty in that spenders is it's going to slow you down
- 6:16long enough to think through the decision and have an open,
- 6:19honest conversation. Now you spending money is going
- 6:22to trigger more than likely your saver money personality that
- 6:25you're in relationship with. But if you have clarity on your
- 6:28numbers, another tip that I would suggest is to learn how to
- 6:31forecast financially spenders. When you can forecast
- 6:35financially and the saver can plug in and see the impact of
- 6:37your decisions, it's going to make things smoother over time.
- 6:42I teach this in my stop budgeting course.
- 6:44You can go to lisachastain.com find the course is there if you
- 6:47want to learn how to financially forecast.
- 6:49This is going to help both of your relationships, which is a
- 6:51much different way of looking at your money ahead of time versus
- 6:55just trying to control what is. So savers and spenders just
- 6:59realize that you're very different.
- 7:01It's going to look and feel differently.
- 7:02Take the money personality quiz, start having new conversations
- 7:05when it comes to money. Here's a second scenario, when
- 7:09money meets business partnerships.
- 7:11Again, the opposites attract. And it's very likely that if
- 7:15you're in a business partnership, sometimes you can
- 7:17attract people who are just like you, which isn't really good
- 7:20either because then you have groupthink that isn't supportive
- 7:23and you're all thinking the same, you're all operating the
- 7:25same. There are a lot of blind spots
- 7:26that come with that right now. What I want to talk about
- 7:28actually is why 2 smart people build a business together.
- 7:32One who wants to reinvest everything in the business and
- 7:35the other who just wants to stack cash.
- 7:38I've had this before in business partnerships.
- 7:39One's a huge dreamer, the other is saver, and they're like oil
- 7:44and water. One partner dreams big, wants to
- 7:47go big, has no problem with accumulating debt to grow the
- 7:50business as long as they can understand the ROI that goes
- 7:53with it. The other one is like a
- 7:54squirrel, save, save, save, save, save, cut back, cut back,
- 7:57cut back, cut back. No, no, no, just slash expenses.
- 8:00And these can be really tough relationships to be in because
- 8:03they're set points. The way that they're operating,
- 8:05the way that they see the world is so different.
- 8:08This is a huge clash in business.
- 8:10For one's a huge dreamer. Guess what?
- 8:12That's typically your CEO and then another one's a huge saver
- 8:17or avoider. We have a lot of people who
- 8:20avoid finances, which is really interesting, and a lot of them
- 8:23can be CF OS because they don't like emotional relationships.
- 8:27They don't want to talk about emotions, they want to talk
- 8:29about numbers. But here's the thing, no matter
- 8:32what your money personality is, your relationship with money is
- 8:36almost entirely emotional. It doesn't matter if you're a
- 8:40saver, dreamer, spender, avoider or giver, you are operating out
- 8:44of a emotional reasons. Financially.
- 8:47The savers, the avoiders, the CF OS want to lock all of that away
- 8:51and just look at numbers, just look at the PNL.
- 8:55But you can't operate business that way because every single
- 8:58one of you, if you're in business, you have a why.
- 9:01Why this matters, why this is important.
- 9:03And our big dreamers, they're risky.
- 9:06They have a high tolerance for risk.
- 9:08They're always about building a bigger plate, and that can be in
- 9:11direct conflict with someone's scarcity conversation or someone
- 9:15sitting safely behind the numbers.
- 9:18So which one are you? The dreamer who dreams big,
- 9:21thinks big, risks big, also maybe has a couple bankruptcies
- 9:25under their belt because of that.
- 9:27Or are you the saver who wants to squirrel all of the money
- 9:30away? But here's the thing, you can't
- 9:32grow a business just squirreling money away.
- 9:34You're going to have to take some risks.
- 9:36The two of you can come together and balance each other's
- 9:38approach, but it's going to take work for you to get there.
- 9:40So take the money personality quiz.
- 9:42Start there. Who are you?
- 9:43And ask this question, Why? Why am I the way that I am?
- 9:47Where did that come from? What do I believe?
- 9:49Is it a belief or is it a fact? Most of the time they're just
- 9:53beliefs. You can work on those things
- 9:54together. You can create balance and
- 9:56harmony in the relationship. I'm going to leave you with that
- 9:59for now. Third scenario, when it comes to
- 10:03money personalities and how they clash.
- 10:04Have you ever had that awkward moment when the check comes and
- 10:08then suddenly the friendship feels off?
- 10:11Why is that? Maybe one of you always pays
- 10:15Hello giver money personality. Maybe one of you never pays and
- 10:20you just kind of skirt by That's not necessarily the giver or the
- 10:23spender money personality, but it could be any other money
- 10:26personality. Right now, in this moment, we're
- 10:28going to talk about the giver versus the saver.
- 10:32Now saver, you might think through this video that I'm
- 10:34picking on you and in some ways I am because in the personal
- 10:38finance industry, the saver has gotten the accolades.
- 10:41The saver is the one that all the personal financial experts
- 10:44are championing. Caleb Hammer, Dave Ramsey, Susie
- 10:48Orman. But The thing is that there's a
- 10:50lot of dis, ease and discomfort that shows up when it comes to
- 10:53the saver. A lot of judgement.
- 10:55It's not that you're doing things wrong necessarily, it's
- 10:57just that you've got to know there are these different money
- 10:59personalities. It's actually I'm going to talk
- 11:01about all five of the money personalities right now.
- 11:03I think that would be way more fun.
- 11:04Here's how the money personalities show up at a table
- 11:07and how they clash. The spender is the one at the
- 11:10table that's ordering for everyone, ordering shots for
- 11:13everyone. They're not even thinking about
- 11:15it, and the bill just keeps racking up.
- 11:17The spender is the one that orders the second or third
- 11:20bottle of wine for the table and behind the scenes everyone else
- 11:23is like oh. I wasn't planning on that.
- 11:26But the spenders like no problem.
- 11:28It's just going to figure itself.
- 11:29Out who can relate to that? And then on the other side,
- 11:32probably next to the spender, you've got the giver who's like.
- 11:35Whatever you think, I'm going to go along with whatever you want
- 11:38to do. Even though I only have 10 bucks
- 11:40in my account right now. I don't know exactly how I'm
- 11:43going to how I'm going to pay for this, but I'm going to go
- 11:46along with it. I'm not going to rock the boat.
- 11:48I'm going to put my knee. Besides, even if I'm vegetarian,
- 11:51I'm going to let them order steak and tell them no big deal,
- 11:53it's OK. Because givers give away their
- 11:56power and being dramatic for purpose, right?
- 11:58But the giver money, personality, you know who you
- 12:00are. You're watching this with
- 12:02friends right now. You're laughing because you're
- 12:03like, Oh my God, that's totally who I am.
- 12:05You show up with gifts for everyone.
- 12:07You don't even know how you're going to pay rent tomorrow, but
- 12:10this is how it shows up at table at dinner with everybody.
- 12:12Then you're like you're stressing out about it, but
- 12:14you're not going to tell anybody because you just want to be
- 12:16supportive in the moment and have a good time.
- 12:18I'm going to go through all the money personalities, by the way.
- 12:19So make sure that you stay with me here.
- 12:21And if you want to know your money personality, go to
- 12:23lisachastain.com/quiz. This is a great conversation
- 12:27starter for girls. Night out.
- 12:28OK, so then you have there's the spender who's ordering like
- 12:31crazy, who doesn't care who's in the moment, who's ordering the
- 12:34VUV or the Dom Perignon for everyone.
- 12:37They're like, Oh my God, how are we going to afford this?
- 12:39Then you have the giver who's just going along with it.
- 12:41It's going to support everybody, going to put their needs aside.
- 12:44And then you have the saver. Who's like, well that's fine,
- 12:47but I'm not paying for anything but mine.
- 12:49So the savers on the corner right there, they have their
- 12:51phone out calculating as things are being ordered what it is
- 12:55that they're ordering and what they have money for.
- 12:58So they sit down even before they order and they have the
- 13:01menu out and then they have their calculator and they're
- 13:04calculating in their head to the dime exactly how much they have.
- 13:08So they order the appetizer instead of the meal because they
- 13:11don't want to overspend. And even if they have $2,000,000
- 13:14in the bank, because they probably do, they're ordering
- 13:17dinner based on the $15 appetizer because it's smaller
- 13:22and they're probably not even going to tip.
- 13:24They're going to let other people handle that.
- 13:26OK, that's saver. And then we have the avoider
- 13:28who's just not there because they're at home taking a bath.
- 13:31They're not even showing up. They're running from their
- 13:33problems. Or they're on the opposite side,
- 13:36the avoiders with the spender over there who's just like
- 13:39ordering everything and they're like I'll put on.
- 13:40My credit card and figure it out.
- 13:42Later. And so then finally we have the
- 13:44dreamer. The dreamer is feeding into all
- 13:46of this, but really is talking to people about their dreams and
- 13:49their goals, and they're probably talking about how
- 13:52successful they are even though they don't have a whole lot of
- 13:55money in the bank. And so they're going to order
- 13:57the most expensive thing on the menu just to impress their
- 13:59friends, not necessarily because it's even something that they
- 14:02want, but they want people to think that they're successful.
- 14:04So they're going to spend their money on that.
- 14:06Totally different reasons and totally different ways of being
- 14:11at the table based on the money personalities.
- 14:14You're starting to get this right.
- 14:15So then the check comes. What happens when the check
- 14:18comes? It sits in the middle of the
- 14:20table. The giver's terrified because
- 14:23they're afraid they're going to get stuck with the bill.
- 14:25So it's between the giver and the spender in the moment about
- 14:28who's going to pay the bill. The avoider is not there,
- 14:31remember? So they're checked out.
- 14:33And then you have the cheap chip who has $20 in their wallet and
- 14:36puts the $20 out. So what happens when the check
- 14:40comes? The giver pulls out their credit
- 14:43card, The spender pulls out their credit card and they they
- 14:46decide to split it. But then the spender says, hey,
- 14:48I got this. Or the dreamer says, hey, I got
- 14:51this. They put it all on their credit
- 14:53card. They pay the bill.
- 14:55They go on to what's next in the evening.
- 14:57Now behind the scenes, the cheap chip is like.
- 15:00I only paid what I paid. But the spender is resentful of
- 15:03the saver because the saver didn't pay for more than what
- 15:06they ordered. Savers good with that.
- 15:08The giver is resentful because the giver wanted to pay for
- 15:12everyone but knew they couldn't afford to, so they let someone
- 15:15else handle the bill. And then the dreamer chips in,
- 15:18puts their Amex down on the table, and pays for everyone.
- 15:22But then the dreamer spends the whole week trying to collect
- 15:24funds and no one else pays, no one else pitches in, and barely
- 15:29anybody tipped. Scenario that could go anyway.
- 15:33But when it comes to our money personalities in full force,
- 15:36this is exactly what shows up in all of the money personalities.
- 15:40And if you're not careful, you're judging other people
- 15:41based on who you are and it doesn't work.
- 15:44So in this video, you've had three different examples of
- 15:47different money personalities, how they show up in
- 15:49relationships and how they clash.
- 15:52The number one thing I would recommend that you do right
- 15:54here, right now is 1 Realize that not everybody's the same.
- 15:582. Get to know your own money
- 15:59personality first and make sure that you have systems in support
- 16:03of the way that you work best. And be mindful of the fact that
- 16:07there are things that you do, no matter what money personality
- 16:09you are, that don't support you, that don't serve you, and it's
- 16:12time for a new way of being when it comes to money.
- 16:15Third thing is learn money systems and strategies that work
- 16:19for each money personality best. For example, in my household, my
- 16:23spender husband gets a spending account every single week.
- 16:26Money goes into that account. I'm not going to force my
- 16:29husband to not spend money. It'll never work anyway.
- 16:33And in my money personality course, which is on my website,
- 16:35you can take the money personality, you can get to know
- 16:38your individual money personality, and then you can
- 16:40get to know the other money personalities, the strengths and
- 16:43weaknesses of each of them. It's a great start for
- 16:46understanding and appreciating everyone for who they are and
- 16:50realizing that a budget probably works for none of these money
- 16:54personalities. Best.
- 16:56I'm Lisa Chastain, I'm a personal money coach, mentor,
- 16:59and author, and I'm on a mission for people to take control of
- 17:02their lives financially without budgeting.
- 17:05If you liked this video, make sure that you subscribe, send it
- 17:08to someone that you know would appreciate this conversation
- 17:11too. And I'll see you right here on
- 17:13the next conversation when it comes to money awareness,
- 17:16relationships with money, and what you can do to heal your
- 17:19relationship with money so that you can live your best life.
- 17:21You can stop budgeting and you can start living.
- 17:24I'll see you next time.
