- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Parco on a Thursday. Man, I
- 0:24Speaker 1: got to figure out something clever for this last day
- 0:26Speaker 1: of the week. But Danny Parkins, FS1, first things first.
- 0:29Speaker 1: What's going on, man?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Chillin' Bo, always love to get the invite, man. Good
- 0:34Speaker 2: to hang out with you.
- 0:35Speaker 3: And I feel like people talk about like this is
- 0:37Speaker 3: a slow time of the sports calendar.
- 0:40Speaker 2: There's a ton of shit going on. No, no, no, no, no.
- 0:42Speaker 1: This is not the slow time.
- 0:45Speaker 2: This has been great.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The slow time is July. Actually, it's August. July, at
- 0:49Speaker 1: least at the beginning, you get like NBA free agency. No, no, no, no.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We got an NCAA tournament that's actually interesting. I'm not
- 0:57Speaker 1: going to be here for this shit, but the Masters
- 1:00Speaker 1: is coming up. And for people who are able to
- 1:01Speaker 1: talk about that on their shows, depending on audience and format,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you got that. Then after that, we go into the
- 1:09Speaker 1: play-in tournament. And then after that, we go into two
- 1:13Speaker 1: months of the NBA playoffs where we got something to
- 1:15Speaker 1: talk about every night and we don't ever sleep. But
- 1:20Speaker 1: even with all of that happening, the NFL still finds
- 1:23Speaker 1: a way Oh, that's right. The draft is coming up
- 1:25Speaker 1: for people who do that kind of thing. But first,
- 1:30Speaker 1: did you see this story on ESPN.com about Jalen Hurts?
- 1:35Speaker 1: That was written by Jeremy Fowler and Tim McManus, who
- 1:38Speaker 1: is not to be confused with Tim McMahon. Now, you
- 1:43Speaker 1: and I have talked many times about the interesting space
- 1:47Speaker 1: that Jalen Hurts inhabits where Neither of us think he's
- 1:50Speaker 1: necessarily that good, except for those two times that he
- 1:53Speaker 1: outplayed Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. OK, right. Like,
- 1:58Speaker 1: was he that good in college? I don't know. Except
- 2:00Speaker 1: for when he was SEC player of the year as
- 2:02Speaker 1: a freshman at Heisman Trophy runner up as a senior.
- 2:07Speaker 1: We don't always know what to do with him. But
- 2:09Speaker 1: the story was interesting because Dominic Foxworth, I think, said
- 2:12Speaker 1: it best on his end.
- 2:13Speaker 2: He was like.
- 2:14Speaker 1: The Eagles are putting him on notice. That was a
- 2:17Speaker 1: lot of people close to the Eagles who did a
- 2:19Speaker 1: lot of talking about what they don't like about him.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And the big thing that came across to me was
- 2:25Speaker 1: a certain rigidity in the way that he wants to
- 2:28Speaker 1: play it as they try to add new things to
- 2:29Speaker 1: the offense. And Jalen Hurts is like, nah, nah, I
- 2:31Speaker 1: don't do that. We're going to keep doing the things
- 2:34Speaker 1: that I do, changing plays. that the coaches have called
- 2:38Speaker 1: in the huddle, which some coaches have to me, some
- 2:40Speaker 1: quarterbacks have the liberty to do, but so forth and
- 2:43Speaker 1: so on. But it all felt to me in reading
- 2:45Speaker 1: it like the Eagles are like, all right, we're going
- 2:47Speaker 1: to try this one more year.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 2:51Speaker 3: The it's a lot of sourcing.
- 2:53Speaker 2: They're good reporters. You first see a story like that drop.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And, you know, the journalist in me is like, oh,
- 3:01Speaker 3: is this like Kevin Petullo sour grapes? He got fired
- 3:05Speaker 3: and then he's like leaking some stuff. but then based
- 3:07Speaker 3: on how some of those sources were described, they were
- 3:10Speaker 3: still presently on the team. So I'm like, okay, this
- 3:13Speaker 3: was well-reported and it's present and we should take it seriously.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I came out of it feeling worse about Jalen Hurts
- 3:22Speaker 3: as a leader, but better about him as a player.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Interesting. Yeah, and I did not expect that.
- 3:31Speaker 3: My perception of Jalen Hurts was 10 out of 10 leader.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Gamer.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Jordan Brand said the right things, clutch, stoic.
- 3:42Speaker 2: That was my perception before you read the article.
- 3:45Speaker 3: But then when it's like doesn't have great relationships with
- 3:48Speaker 3: many people on the team and the people that he
- 3:50Speaker 3: did have relationships with on the team have been frayed,
- 3:54Speaker 3: that there's like observationally not as many like post-game conversations
- 3:58Speaker 3: with his wide receivers or his offensive linemen, being resistant to–
- 4:05Speaker 3: motions and you know more modern NFL offensive trends that
- 4:10Speaker 3: he not only is a Jordan brand ambassador but that
- 4:12Speaker 3: he fancies himself a bit of a Jordan or Kobe-esque
- 4:15Speaker 3: leader and it's like buddy I'm sorry but like you're
- 4:17Speaker 3: not Jordan or Kobe just because you have the one
- 4:20Speaker 3: Super Bowl MVP so that level of inflexibility in his
- 4:27Speaker 3: leadership when you need to be a quarterback who is
- 4:29Speaker 3: the leader to all people I actually found myself downgrading
- 4:33Speaker 3: the leadership side of it But the reason why I
- 4:36Speaker 3: upgraded the football side a little bit, and I've known this,
- 4:40Speaker 3: and I've said this on First Things First, and I've
- 4:42Speaker 3: done the graphic with all of the names, and I
- 4:45Speaker 3: know you know this. He literally has had more offensive
- 4:51Speaker 3: coordinators and play callers than he has had years of
- 4:55Speaker 3: college and NFL football.
- 4:57Speaker 2: This is true.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It is a staggering thing. because he said had interims.
- 5:01Speaker 3: He had guys fired in the year. Some guys get
- 5:03Speaker 3: promoted to be head coaches. Other guys get fired. Sean
- 5:07Speaker 3: Mannion will literally be his 13th play caller in 11 years.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That is a mind boggling thing.
- 5:15Speaker 3: When you talk to like one of the big talking
- 5:17Speaker 3: points in Chicago, where I'm from this off season is like,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we can't wait to see what Caleb Williams will do
- 5:23Speaker 3: in year two of Ben Johnson, just having like two
- 5:26Speaker 3: years of continuity. And Jalen Hurts, there was the source
- 5:30Speaker 3: who talked about how he craves consistency. His best year
- 5:34Speaker 3: came when it was year two of Shane Steichen, where
- 5:36Speaker 3: he had the back-to-back years. And it does feel reasonable
- 5:43Speaker 3: on a human level to if every single year of football,
- 5:49Speaker 3: you're getting new ideas.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Thrown at you. This is my system.
- 5:53Speaker 3: This is my way of doing things. This is my terminology.
- 5:56Speaker 3: This is what I believe works. And you're Jalen Hurts
- 5:59Speaker 3: and you're like, buddy, you might be gone in 10 months.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And I have been SEC.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Player of the year, Heisman runner up, Super Bowl MVP,
- 6:09Speaker 3: have the best winning percentage in the history of the
- 6:11Speaker 3: Philadelphia Eagles. I could see how even though it is
- 6:15Speaker 3: like the correct thing to play or listen to coach,
- 6:20Speaker 3: I could see how you would have some rigidity to
- 6:23Speaker 3: it and be resistant to change when you are constantly
- 6:26Speaker 3: being inundated with change.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So I think those all, at the very least, sound
- 6:34Speaker 1: like fair points.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Okay. Shoot it down, please. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I'm not here to shoot, right? But these are my
- 6:42Speaker 1: questions about that. Because I also understand the idea of continuity, right?
- 6:47Speaker 1: That having the same guy two years in a row
- 6:50Speaker 1: goes a long way. I don't know enough specifically about
- 6:54Speaker 1: the changes from year to year. For example, with the Eagles,
- 6:57Speaker 1: going from Doug Peterson to Sirianni, yeah, you're going to
- 7:00Speaker 1: have changes there, right? But if I'm not mistaken, is
- 7:03Speaker 1: that not like Sirianni's offense? And you call and get
- 7:06Speaker 1: the offense coordinator in there to run your offense. So
- 7:08Speaker 1: I don't, you know what I mean? I don't know
- 7:09Speaker 1: how much Everything changes from year to year in terms
- 7:12Speaker 1: of terminology and all that stuff. Like, I think some
- 7:14Speaker 1: of that is nuanced, though the actual play caller part,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I do agree with. The question I have, though, is
- 7:21Speaker 1: part of the reason that there's a new play caller
- 7:25Speaker 1: every year because he's the one getting them fired.
- 7:30Speaker 3: So we touched on that a little bit yesterday. It's
- 7:33Speaker 3: a unique place in the football ecosystem where it's like
- 7:37Speaker 3: we all know Jalen Hurts is kind of limited. So
- 7:40Speaker 3: if you have an awesome offensive year with Jalen Hurts,
- 7:44Speaker 3: the coordinator gets credit. But then if you have a
- 7:47Speaker 3: bad year with Jalen Hurts, everyone's like, well, Howie Roseman's
- 7:51Speaker 3: put together this awesome team. You underachieved, coordinator gets fired.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and what if in part coordinator gets fired because
- 7:58Speaker 1: your quarterback can't be coached? And so this is where
- 8:02Speaker 1: I throw this out and where I'm not fully sure
- 8:06Speaker 1: what to do with it in total. But if I
- 8:08Speaker 1: am not mistaken, his first year at Alabama, Lane Kiffin,
- 8:15Speaker 1: was running the offense and if I'm not mistaken that
- 8:19Speaker 1: was the year that they had to send his ass
- 8:21Speaker 1: home before the national championship game 2016 right because he
- 8:25Speaker 1: had taken the job at Florida Atlantic okay the next
- 8:28Speaker 1: year they brought in Brian Daybold to run that offense
- 8:32Speaker 1: and it wasn't a goat right like it wasn't cracking
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'll just point out They put two in at halftime
- 8:41Speaker 1: of the national championship game and suddenly that offense, which
- 8:44Speaker 1: had quite possibly the best set of wide receivers in
- 8:47Speaker 1: the history of college football, started looking like something, right?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Next year, it's a new offensive coordinator and a new
- 8:55Speaker 1: play caller again that did not seem to bother Tua
- 8:58Speaker 1: Tungabailoa a single bit. He had a season in which
- 9:03Speaker 1: I think that he should have won the Heisman. He
- 9:06Speaker 1: was the Heisman. He was the presumptive Heisman winner all
- 9:09Speaker 1: the way up until the last game of the season.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And we just said, hey, Kyler Murray, want to give
- 9:13Speaker 1: it to him?
- 9:13Speaker 2: OK, cool.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And then we went ahead and we did that. With Steichen,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I think it's a fair point. Two years of Steichen,
- 9:21Speaker 1: second year, he gets there. Brian Johnson gets there the
- 9:24Speaker 1: next year. Now it looks bad. Kellen Moore comes in.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It looks okay in part because they had an offensive
- 9:31Speaker 1: line that was moving furniture and a running back that
- 9:33Speaker 1: ran for 2,000 yards. Is that what's going to be
- 9:36Speaker 1: required to make it work for your quarterback? Not sure
- 9:39Speaker 1: I blame that on changes in play calling. Where I
- 9:43Speaker 1: agree with you. Is the idea that I came away
- 9:46Speaker 1: with a poor impression of him as a leader. And
- 9:49Speaker 1: I think to me, you can't lead like doing this
- 9:54Speaker 1: like other people. Like there was a portion in the
- 9:56Speaker 1: article where they talked about Sirianni saying that. Jalen Hurd's
- 10:00Speaker 1: leadership was in line with Michael Jordan's. Only Michael Jordan
- 10:05Speaker 1: could act like that and pass it off as leadership
- 10:08Speaker 1: because he's Michael fucking Jordan. Nicole Lynn, his agent, in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the same paragraph in the story, she is cited as
- 10:17Speaker 1: saying that he has the work ethic Kobe Bryant. Here's
- 10:22Speaker 1: why I push back on that. I watch Kobe. Add
- 10:26Speaker 1: to his game every single year. Kobe didn't have that
- 10:30Speaker 1: post game when he first got into the league. That
- 10:33Speaker 1: footwork got better. All these things that Kobe picked up
- 10:36Speaker 1: and added once it hadn't been good enough another way.
- 10:40Speaker 1: What this story is telling me is that they are
- 10:43Speaker 1: asking Jalen Hurts to get better.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:46Speaker 1: We're asking you to do the things that are hard
- 10:49Speaker 1: for you. And he's like, nope, I'm going to do
- 10:53Speaker 1: the thing that people do in high school now. I'm
- 10:57Speaker 1: going to stand in the shotgun where I can see
- 11:00Speaker 1: everything that's going on. They specifically cited he doesn't like
- 11:03Speaker 1: to turn his back on the defense. And for all
- 11:06Speaker 1: of our lives, until the spread got to be so prevalent,
- 11:10Speaker 1: the separation of men and boys at quarterback, is your
- 11:14Speaker 1: confidence and willingness to turn your back to the defense,
- 11:17Speaker 1: run some play action, turn around and know what's going on.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, I believe after hearing people ask you to
- 11:25Speaker 1: do this would be like, damn, I guess I need
- 11:27Speaker 1: to go out there and add this piece to my game.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And he has not. And apparently the Eagles are sick
- 11:32Speaker 1: of that shit.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And the proof there is actually just straight up in
- 11:37Speaker 3: the data. Like, Jalen Hurts has serious limitations as a passer.
- 11:41Speaker 3: You and I have talked about that multiple times on
- 11:44Speaker 3: this podcast and sitting on Nick's couch watching football.
- 11:48Speaker 2: You have A.J. Brown. Why can't you throw intermediate routes?
- 11:53Speaker 2: That's weird.
- 11:54Speaker 3: He's maybe the best intermediate middle-of-the-field receiver in football. He
- 11:58Speaker 3: was made in a lab to do that stuff over
- 12:01Speaker 3: the middle, and that's not consistent. He sometimes feels like
- 12:06Speaker 3: he's not willing to just grip it and rip it.
- 12:09Speaker 3: doesn't fully trust what he's seeing. That, I think, could
- 12:12Speaker 3: be tied somewhat to mastery of an offense and consistency,
- 12:15Speaker 3: but also anticipatory throwing.
- 12:17Speaker 2: The best of the best can do that.
- 12:21Speaker 3: This is a baseball analogy or comparison, but I think
- 12:24Speaker 3: you'll understand the point.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I covered those Cubs teams.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Javi Baez, wildly talented player, wildly flawed player. Joe Maddon,
- 12:33Speaker 3: the Cubs manager, used to say, If Javi Baez could
- 12:37Speaker 3: learn to lay off the slider away that looked like
- 12:41Speaker 3: it was in the zone, but would be a ball
- 12:42Speaker 3: every single time.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So if he could lay off that.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Pitch, he would be Manny Ramirez because like his ability
- 12:48Speaker 3: to hit for power when the ball was in the
- 12:49Speaker 3: zone was unbelievable, but he just couldn't lay off that pitch.
- 12:52Speaker 2: So he was frustrated. He would make the same mistake,
- 12:54Speaker 2: same mistake, same mistake, same mistake. And Javi never wanted
- 12:58Speaker 2: to work on it. And he's a flawed player.
- 13:01Speaker 3: But Javi Baez has also made over $ 200 million playing baseball.
- 13:06Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 13:08Speaker 3: He's got one of the best gloves, some of the
- 13:10Speaker 3: best hands, some great raw power. He's a good enough
- 13:12Speaker 3: athlete to be a shortstop, a second baseman, now a
- 13:15Speaker 3: center fielder.
- 13:16Speaker 2: It's like, you know what?
- 13:18Speaker 3: Some people are just not perfect players, and they're not
- 13:22Speaker 3: going to be Kobe and add the footwork, and they're
- 13:24Speaker 3: not going to change because what they've done has gotten
- 13:28Speaker 3: them to this incredible level.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts being Jalen Hurts has him a Super Bowl
- 13:34Speaker 3: MVP and two hundred and fifty million dollars.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 13:38Speaker 1: You know, but this is where I'd say there's a difference.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Javi Baez is a better baseball player than Jalen Hurts
- 13:48Speaker 1: is a football player.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I agree. I agree.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And I would ask this question. All these places that
- 13:54Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts is gone. is Jalen Hurts the SEC player.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Of the year?
- 13:59Speaker 1: And is Jalen, if he is not at Alabama, is
- 14:02Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts the Heisman Trophy runner-up? If he is not Oklahoma,
- 14:06Speaker 1: at which the two previous guys who were there were
- 14:09Speaker 1: Heisman Trophy winner and Heisman Trophy winner.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Okay. And Philly, man.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd say he has, my point I made when
- 14:19Speaker 1: he came out of college was, I've seen him not
- 14:22Speaker 1: be good enough passing for two professional teams already.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Right?
- 14:27Speaker 1: Alabama and Oklahoma. I've already seen it, but what do
- 14:31Speaker 1: you know? It looked basically exactly the same in the
- 14:35Speaker 1: NFL as it had in college. I, I wonder though,
- 14:41Speaker 1: if outside of the fact that the Eagles are saying, look,
- 14:43Speaker 1: we about to do some motion and we about to
- 14:45Speaker 1: do some play action and he going to get on
- 14:46Speaker 1: and get gone.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I also came away from that feeling more convinced that
- 14:50Speaker 1: they're not going to trade AJ Brown because I, as
- 14:53Speaker 1: I have said from the beginning, Trading AJ Brown would
- 14:56Speaker 1: be a loser move and the Eagles do not strike
- 14:59Speaker 1: me as being losers, right?
- 15:02Speaker 2: I agree.
- 15:04Speaker 3: If you trade AJ Brown, you are worse immediately. And
- 15:09Speaker 3: I agree that the Eagles seem to be in a
- 15:10Speaker 3: win now mode and they are a great organization.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I don't know if you put that toothpaste back in
- 15:16Speaker 2: the tube though.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I'm just saying I'm not trading somebody for being right.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And that's, and that's fair.
- 15:25Speaker 3: But you've got a complicated cap situation with him and
- 15:29Speaker 3: his contract, and you can always extend him, and there
- 15:31Speaker 3: are ways to change it going forward if you're going
- 15:34Speaker 3: to choose A.J. Brown in the divorce. But are you
- 15:37Speaker 3: really about to go through 17 more games with A.J.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Brown and Jalen Hurts?
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm just saying, they have clearly already put Jalen Hurts
- 15:44Speaker 1: on the clock. And I don't know if A.J. Brown
- 15:47Speaker 1: is or isn't going to be the issue. Look, the
- 15:49Speaker 1: story also got to a point that some of us
- 15:51Speaker 1: knew and hadn't really talked about, which is they went
- 15:54Speaker 1: and got Brandon Graham's old ass off the radio and
- 15:56Speaker 1: brought him back on the team just to have a
- 15:58Speaker 1: conduit between Jalen Hurts and the rest of the team
- 16:02Speaker 1: because he can't. He can't get it right with them.
- 16:08Speaker 1: This is, I've never seen anything like this before. Because again,
- 16:13Speaker 1: it gets back to what you said a little earlier though.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It has gotten him to Super Bowl MVP, right? It
- 16:18Speaker 1: has gotten him to play in two Super Bowls. It's
- 16:21Speaker 1: gotten him to play in two national championship games. But
- 16:25Speaker 1: it's not because of him that these things have happened.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but he doesn't believe that.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I know, I know. And how do you fix that?
- 16:33Speaker 2: I don't think you can. Like, you know people of.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, he has a lot of talent, like,
- 16:39Speaker 3: relative to the population.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And so he's like, I'm the man.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Of course he thinks he's the man.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:47Speaker 2: He's friends with Michael Jordan. He wears Jordan brand on
- 16:50Speaker 2: his chest. He has a Super Bowl trophy.
- 16:53Speaker 3: He does it in the toughest sports city in America,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and they largely back him.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 3: He's like, I won over Philadelphia sports fans and bested
- 17:03Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes in a Super Bowl and Michael Jordan reinforces
- 17:08Speaker 3: positively my leadership style.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Who does not care about Jeremy Fowler?
- 17:15Speaker 1: Or but does he care about the dozens of people
- 17:18Speaker 1: who talk to Jeremy Fowler.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Okay like listen and I again I was surprised that
- 17:24Speaker 3: I a very Philly fans are not huge fans of
- 17:27Speaker 3: my work like they remind me of it all the
- 17:31Speaker 3: time and the terrific first things first videos I was
- 17:34Speaker 3: surprised at my own take with like all I was
- 17:36Speaker 3: saying I'm like on a human level he's like well
- 17:39Speaker 3: I got 12 sources to tell me I'm doing it
- 17:41Speaker 3: wrong yeah And then I imagine he looks at his
- 17:44Speaker 3: phone and he looks at a text from Michael Jordan
- 17:47Speaker 3: that's just like, keep it up. And it's got to
- 17:51Speaker 3: be a mindfuck for him to be like, why is
- 17:54Speaker 3: what I'm doing not working when all we do is win?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Well, there's the other part, too. I would be very
- 18:01Speaker 1: curious to know what his dad thinks of all of this.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And I say that for people who don't know, his
- 18:06Speaker 1: dad is a coach. If I'm not mistaken, his dad
- 18:09Speaker 1: was his coach. And the flip side of the coach's
- 18:12Speaker 1: son thing is he already got a coach. Right.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And so if dad is saying, no, you OK, I
- 18:20Speaker 1: would think that my dad would be like, all right, son,
- 18:22Speaker 1: let's go out here and let's work on some of
- 18:25Speaker 1: this stuff right here.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I don't know what his dad is saying, but I
- 18:29Speaker 1: would be very curious to know how that goes. Like, look,
- 18:33Speaker 1: Brian Johnson was his offensive coordinator in Philadelphia that one year.
- 18:38Speaker 1: um brian johnson they from they from the same part
- 18:41Speaker 1: of around houston right that goose creek over there baytown
- 18:45Speaker 1: channel view all of that they're from the same place
- 18:47Speaker 1: i don't know if brian played for jaylen's father but
- 18:51Speaker 1: they're they're i guarantee you that brian johnson and coach
- 18:55Speaker 1: hurts know each other and have known each other for
- 18:57Speaker 1: a very long time just because of the proximity of
- 18:59Speaker 1: that area that dude got fired Right. Like that dude
- 19:06Speaker 1: got canned behind this. So I wish I had. And
- 19:09Speaker 1: by the way, then that guy goes and works with
- 19:11Speaker 1: Jaden Daniels when Jaden Daniels thing starts taking off. So
- 19:15Speaker 1: I don't know where I don't know where exactly this goes.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I don't know how it goes. But the Eagles are
- 19:20Speaker 1: clearly saying now it's on you. And the person who
- 19:23Speaker 1: has to feel the best about that is Nick Sirianni,
- 19:27Speaker 1: because we're always ready to fire him. At least I am.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I am too.
- 19:32Speaker 3: And listen, you would like to think that if you
- 19:34Speaker 3: were Nick Sirianni and you were an offensive coach, he
- 19:36Speaker 3: wouldn't need to have more than one offensive coordinator a year.
- 19:39Speaker 2: It's like, buddy, why don't you just call the plays?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Why don't you just be the thing that is consistent
- 19:45Speaker 3: for Jalen Hurts?
- 19:46Speaker 2: But evidently that hasn't happened.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Listen, I think that there is a chance that this
- 19:51Speaker 3: ends with like Jalen Hurts being like, oh, they were right.
- 19:54Speaker 3: When in like two years, he's the quarterback of the Titans.
- 19:59Speaker 3: When we finally do see Jalen Hurts without a super
- 20:02Speaker 3: team around him and everyone's like, oh.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, of course he's a below average passer. We've known
- 20:07Speaker 2: that for forever.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Did you get it?
- 20:09Speaker 2: You didn't agree with that. You just quoted win percentage
- 20:11Speaker 2: to all of us.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Look, you know what that thing is with him now
- 20:14Speaker 1: wanting to run the kind of stuff that they want
- 20:15Speaker 1: to do because that's not what he does. I don't
- 20:19Speaker 1: know how much this comes up in your world, but
- 20:23Speaker 1: in my world and people I'm around, people make a
- 20:27Speaker 1: very good point that you can tell a lot about
- 20:29Speaker 1: somebody's lifestyle by eating chicken with them, but specifically chicken
- 20:34Speaker 1: that got a bone. What that bone looked like at
- 20:37Speaker 1: the end will tell you a great deal about how
- 20:42Speaker 1: it is that a person has lived, right? Them people
- 20:45Speaker 1: that be shaving them things like bald all the way smooth, hey, man,
- 20:50Speaker 1: they ain't never had the luxury of just being like, cool,
- 20:53Speaker 1: let me go get the next piece of chicken right fast.
- 20:56Speaker 1: They have not had it like that. Jalen Hurts is
- 20:59Speaker 1: leaving that chicken on the bone. He has had the
- 21:02Speaker 1: option and ability to to not have to go down
- 21:05Speaker 1: to the gristle. He ain't never really had to do that.
- 21:07Speaker 1: You ain't got to do that at Alabama. You ain't
- 21:09Speaker 1: got to do that at Oklahoma. And he has not
- 21:11Speaker 1: had to do that with the Eagles. And the Eagles
- 21:14Speaker 1: are like, we are tired of wasting money on chicken.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Like in the last year, there's like four buckets that
- 21:22Speaker 1: you haven't eaten. And they just right there on the bone.
- 21:25Speaker 1: If you'll just turn around a little bit and let
- 21:27Speaker 1: us do some back and forth stuff to make it better.
- 21:30Speaker 1: And they telling him, hey, man, eat the chicken, dog.
- 21:33Speaker 1: All of it.
- 21:34Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Don't touch that one. Finish this one.
- 21:39Speaker 3: That analogy hurts because I've been told that I am
- 21:42Speaker 3: a privileged chicken eater.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Just so you know, I was realizing this as I
- 21:49Speaker 1: was eating chicken last night or a couple nights ago
- 21:51Speaker 1: with that measure of privilege.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah, that has been pointed out to me on more
- 21:56Speaker 3: than one occasion that I'm a... Where else in my
- 22:00Speaker 3: life are you soft, Parkins? Because you're eating that chicken
- 22:03Speaker 3: like you have been silver spoon fed.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I'm like, that's guilty. That is guilty as charges. You
- 22:10Speaker 2: see me, sir. You see me.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We've both been there. Oh, yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. But I mean, like, I'm not going to
- 22:21Speaker 2: change now. 39 years old. I'm going to eat my
- 22:23Speaker 2: chicken how I like to eat my chicken.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Jalen Hurts. That's what I'm saying. That's what he's saying.
- 22:28Speaker 2: That's why I can relate to him. That's why all
- 22:31Speaker 2: of a sudden I found myself sympathizing.
- 22:33Speaker 1: But I think part of what's amazing to me about
- 22:35Speaker 1: it is that he's gotten this far while being able
- 22:38Speaker 1: to be this rigid because, as we said, he's not
- 22:41Speaker 1: really that good, right? Like normally the guys that you
- 22:44Speaker 1: hear acting like this, and that sounds more loaded than
- 22:48Speaker 1: I intended, but carrying themselves in this fashion, comporting themselves
- 22:52Speaker 1: as such, They're normally a little better than this, right? Like,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I don't, it's never, sorry, nothing like it. Nothing like it.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It is, yeah, it's delusional arrogance, which we've seen from athletes,
- 23:04Speaker 3: but then you can like look through it, a very
- 23:06Speaker 3: specific prism of Oklahoma, Alabama, win percentage, Philly, Philly sports fans,
- 23:12Speaker 3: two Super Bowls, besting the home, Super Bowl MVP, Jordan brand,
- 23:16Speaker 3: and be like, yeah, I'd probably, I'd probably be pretty
- 23:21Speaker 3: arrogant too.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, I would have thought after he
- 23:25Speaker 1: got parked in the middle of the national championship game
- 23:27Speaker 1: and had to ride to Oak to hold next year.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I would have thought that that would have been the, oh, okay.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Apparently not.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Apparently not.
- 23:38Speaker 3: And it's a, like, what do you think that's going
- 23:42Speaker 3: to look like this year?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Like, do you think he has it?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Like, obviously he's not half as talented as Aaron Rodgers.
- 23:50Speaker 3: But Aaron Rodgers had some rigidity to him at the
- 23:53Speaker 3: end with Mike McCarthy. And it was literally the same stuff.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Did not like motions and was kind of hesitant to that.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And Matt LaFleur was.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Like, hey, just try it.
- 24:06Speaker 3: You're really smart. You're really talented. Just try it my way.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And then he ripped off two MVPs. So even the
- 24:12Speaker 3: most talented ever can still get stuck in their ways
- 24:18Speaker 3: and then be exposed to new ideas and old.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Dog, new tricks sort of thing. Does Jalen Hurts have
- 24:25Speaker 2: it in him to if you put him in.
- 24:27Speaker 3: 10 out of 10 modern offense? What would he look
- 24:31Speaker 3: like if he was coached by Sean McVay? What would
- 24:34Speaker 3: he look like if he was coached by Kyle Shanahan?
- 24:36Speaker 3: I still tend to think that there are limitations there
- 24:39Speaker 3: with his throwing, but I'm open to the possibility that
- 24:43Speaker 3: I'm wrong.
- 24:44Speaker 1: You know what? I think the part that makes this
- 24:46Speaker 1: interesting now that I think about it, where it kind
- 24:47Speaker 1: of washes over me, is that he's all.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I go through this to a degree with certain things,
- 24:55Speaker 1: like when I think about with music, right? When I
- 24:58Speaker 1: was younger, I had an old soul. When you're young,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it's called an old soul. When you're middle-aged, you just
- 25:06Speaker 1: seem old.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Right?
- 25:10Speaker 1: He was an old soul, right? Like we thought of
- 25:12Speaker 1: him as being, in every way, by the way, we
- 25:14Speaker 1: have just thought of him as being a bit precocious.
- 25:16Speaker 1: He's a little young to be that regent, don't you think?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I think that's the part that makes it so interesting is, again,
- 25:25Speaker 1: we're not talking about Aaron Rodgers at 36 or 37
- 25:28Speaker 1: being like, no, that's not the way that I do things.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We're talking about somebody at an age where you should
- 25:34Speaker 1: be as malleable as one could ever expect.
- 25:37Speaker 2: You to be.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And you're like, nah, nah. In a league, by the way,
- 25:40Speaker 1: where most people understand that once you get to that place,
- 25:43Speaker 1: the things that he's being asked to do are the
- 25:45Speaker 1: things that you have to learn to do. And he's like, nah,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I don't do that.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And the things that like objectively work.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Like, you know, and it said in the article, he
- 25:55Speaker 3: understands that pre-snap motions help quarterbacks. They don't do it
- 26:00Speaker 3: because they want to like get the receiver extra cardio.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:04Speaker 3: They do it to like, tip the quarterback's hand as
- 26:07Speaker 3: to what the defense is doing and give him more
- 26:09Speaker 3: pre-snap information so that you are then able to like,
- 26:12Speaker 3: you don't have to be looking at the defense the
- 26:14Speaker 3: whole time to process it.
- 26:15Speaker 2: You should know it ahead of time. You can turn
- 26:17Speaker 2: your back to the defense, the whole thing.
- 26:19Speaker 3: And yeah, Rogers, Rogers was like the anti QB wins guy.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Cause everyone's like, man, it feels like you should have
- 26:26Speaker 3: won more, but you're so clearly good. What's wrong with
- 26:29Speaker 3: the rest of everyone else? Jalen hurts is the poster
- 26:32Speaker 3: child for the quarterback wins argument. It's like, Well, he's
- 26:35Speaker 3: good because he wins.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yeah. They win because of him.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And people people struggle with like separating those ideas. I'm
- 26:43Speaker 1: going to throw this out here right quick, too, in
- 26:45Speaker 1: terms of talking about him as being precocious. I will
- 26:48Speaker 1: say this for the Eagles, though. Y'all better be careful.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Like something happened. Y'all decide that y'all are going to
- 26:54Speaker 1: y'all are going to send Jalen Hurts out there. Shit,
- 26:58Speaker 1: it's going to be a protest outside that facility. It's
- 27:00Speaker 1: going to look like the Essence Fest with Lil Jon
- 27:01Speaker 1: do the DJ set. Boy, sister's going to be out
- 27:04Speaker 1: there ready to burn that bitch down. Y'all there, watch out.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I mean, I know where he is. Very popular. I
- 27:11Speaker 1: know who his room is. Some of Philadelphia got it,
- 27:15Speaker 1: but shit, they're going to be out there dressed in
- 27:17Speaker 1: all mace like a Frankie Beverly concert.
- 27:22Speaker 3: NFL, not for long, but in a certain segment of Philadelphia,
- 27:26Speaker 3: they want it forever.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Forever.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Forever. Forever. That'll be him. But coming up next, change
- 27:32Speaker 1: gears a little bit. Go get Parkinson's and what's going
- 27:35Speaker 1: on with this end of the NBA season, which has
- 27:37Speaker 1: been low-key incredible. It's time to slide your glass slippers

- 30:10Speaker 1: All right, we're back with Danny Parkins, FS1, First Things First.
- 30:15Speaker 1: You know, I'm a big Victor guy. Like, I'm totally there.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I haven't bothered to ask Nick if he's come around
- 30:21Speaker 1: on this one. It typically takes him a while. Like,
- 30:23Speaker 1: I give Nick credit on that. Nick going to stay
- 30:25Speaker 1: in the pocket until he absolutely cannot get rid of
- 30:27Speaker 1: the ball, right? Like, he'll hold out as long as possible.
- 30:32Speaker 1: But Victor is, there wasn't no need to overthink this one.
- 30:36Speaker 1: It is exactly what it is. And now this man
- 30:38Speaker 1: is trying to talk himself into winning the MVP playing
- 30:41Speaker 1: fewer than 30 minutes a game.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's wild.
- 30:47Speaker 3: I think this is one of the weird times where
- 30:52Speaker 3: best player in the world and MVP might not totally align. Like,
- 30:57Speaker 3: my eyes can tell me that, yeah, he's the best
- 31:00Speaker 3: player in the world. But I've never, ever, ever, ever
- 31:04Speaker 3: heard or seen or even read about other than that
- 31:08Speaker 3: Bob Knight quote about Michael Jordan, like, Best player in
- 31:14Speaker 3: the world who has never even played in a playoff game.
- 31:17Speaker 3: And when Bob Knight said that after the Team USA
- 31:19Speaker 3: practices about Michael Jordan, that wasn't like a majority opinion.
- 31:24Speaker 3: It was just what Bob Knight said about him. So
- 31:27Speaker 3: he's clearly the best defensive player in the league by
- 31:31Speaker 3: a mile. And he's arguably the best defensive player I've
- 31:35Speaker 3: ever seen play the sport.
- 31:37Speaker 2: He's certainly the most singular.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And last night, Bo, he had 41 and 18 in
- 31:42Speaker 3: 28 minutes. Like, what the fuck am I supposed to
- 31:47Speaker 3: do with 41 and 18 in 28 minutes?
- 31:50Speaker 2: Like, that is just, it's incomprehensible.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Now, is that a.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Reason that he should be MVP of the league when
- 32:01Speaker 3: Shea is doing exactly what he did last year? 32-6
- 32:08Speaker 3: on insane 55% efficiency, an all-time guard scoring season for
- 32:14Speaker 3: the team with the best record in the league in
- 32:17Speaker 3: the toughest conference with more wins than the Spurs, albeit
- 32:20Speaker 3: a bad head-to-head record with the Spurs, when his second-best player,
- 32:24Speaker 3: Jalen Williams, who was an all-star, who was all-NBA defense,
- 32:29Speaker 3: who scored 40 in a finals game, has missed two-thirds
- 32:34Speaker 3: of the games? Like, I think it's totally reasonable to
- 32:37Speaker 3: split the baby and say Shea would get my MVP
- 32:40Speaker 3: vote and Victor Wembanyan was the best player in the world.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I just want to remind you guys that there's a
- 32:47Speaker 1: guy who's leading the league in rebounds and assists. I, yeah, no,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I know.
- 32:53Speaker 2: And averaging a triple bubble.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I'm scoring 27 points a game.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Yeah. He's also incredible. Like this, this is a tough
- 33:02Speaker 3: MVP year. Like, But where is.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I'm pulling it up right now. I just want to
- 33:07Speaker 2: have it exactly accurate.
- 33:11Speaker 3: And this is why I said I would have given
- 33:13Speaker 3: it to Shea last year. Now, it's closer this year.
- 33:16Speaker 2: But, like, okay, so Jokic's numbers are ridiculous.
- 33:19Speaker 3: We've never seen someone lead the league in points– or,
- 33:21Speaker 3: excuse me, in rebounds and assists. He is averaging a
- 33:24Speaker 3: triple-double again, which at one point got Russell Westbrook. The
- 33:27Speaker 3: MVP is the sixth seed. And now we've become bored
- 33:29Speaker 3: with it by Joker.
- 33:31Speaker 2: But should it.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Matter that Shea's team has 11 more wins than him?
- 33:34Speaker 3: Because last year he had 18 more wins than Joker.
- 33:38Speaker 1: No, so I mean, I think that Shea is probably
- 33:41Speaker 1: the most reasonable choice for MVP. Shea is weird because
- 33:46Speaker 1: everything that Shea has done does not simply imply a
- 33:48Speaker 1: really good player. It implies one of the greatest basketball
- 33:51Speaker 1: players of all time. And there has literally not been
- 33:54Speaker 1: one time in my life that I have watched him
- 33:55Speaker 1: and thought, holy shit, that's one of the best basketball
- 33:57Speaker 1: players of all time. Um, but the results absolutely indicate
- 34:02Speaker 1: this about him. But what you just said is very important.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Oklahoma city is still as good as they were last
- 34:08Speaker 1: year without a guy that can give you 35 in
- 34:11Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Um, like once you get.
- 34:14Speaker 3: 40, 40, Jalen Williams gave you, he went, he had three,
- 34:18Speaker 3: he had a three game stretch games, three, four, and
- 34:20Speaker 3: five of the finals last year, I believe where he
- 34:22Speaker 3: was like 25, 28, 40. It's like, okay, that guy
- 34:25Speaker 3: fucking matters. Right.
- 34:27Speaker 1: And once you get past Chet, like, who exactly are
- 34:29Speaker 1: we talking about on this roster? He's that guy. Jokic
- 34:34Speaker 1: is that guy. Like, all of this, it's an amazing
- 34:36Speaker 1: time right now at the top of the league. I
- 34:39Speaker 1: think that is, in terms of, like, who the top
- 34:41Speaker 1: players are, you know, not as many Americans as we
- 34:44Speaker 1: would probably like because the top four guys that we're
- 34:46Speaker 1: talking about are these three guys and Luka Doncic.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Luka just had a 600-point month.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Yes, he did. Yes, he did.
- 34:56Speaker 2: 13 straight games of 30-plus.
- 34:59Speaker 3: I think three straight games of 40-plus, like, current active
- 35:02Speaker 3: streak as you and I are recording this.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Crazy efficiency. Like, an awesome win-loss record.
- 35:09Speaker 3: On a Lakers team that, again, for a month, was
- 35:12Speaker 3: top 10 in points per game allowed and number one
- 35:15Speaker 3: three-point defense allowed.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Right. I didn't see that coming. I did not see
- 35:20Speaker 2: that coming.
- 35:20Speaker 1: And this season, he has been... not in the same
- 35:26Speaker 1: class as these other guys. And that's, and that's not
- 35:29Speaker 1: about him. That is about the class of what the
- 35:33Speaker 1: top has been. Also think that it's a little skewed,
- 35:36Speaker 1: the Victor numbers thing, because of the numbers restriction that
- 35:39Speaker 1: they had earlier in the year, you know, when he was,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I forget which injury it was like during the play in,
- 35:44Speaker 1: when he was coming off the bench and doing stuff
- 35:46Speaker 1: like that. And I think there are other years in
- 35:50Speaker 1: which he would have won this, or perhaps if he
- 35:52Speaker 1: were older or perhaps, if the Spurs had traded to
- 35:58Speaker 1: get him. And what I mean by that is Steve
- 36:01Speaker 1: Nash won that first MVP that led to the second
- 36:04Speaker 1: MVP because they were so much better getting him than
- 36:09Speaker 1: they were the year before. I don't even know if
- 36:12Speaker 1: he was the best. I think Amari Stoudemire, congratulations to
- 36:14Speaker 1: him on the Hall of Fame, was probably the better
- 36:16Speaker 1: player than Nash was. But Nash was like the swing voter, right?
- 36:20Speaker 1: Nash's presence was the thing that elevated that team that
- 36:23Speaker 1: had been bad into being very good. Victor, it's a
- 36:28Speaker 1: narrative sort of MVP. Russell Westbrook won a narrative MVP
- 36:31Speaker 1: that year. He won 47 games in a year where
- 36:33Speaker 1: they lost Kevin Durant and we thought that they would
- 36:35Speaker 1: be terrible. Victor's case is a narrative case. Look at
- 36:40Speaker 1: what I've changed just by being Victor Wimbanyama. Look at
- 36:43Speaker 1: these other dudes. You know their names? I know you don't.
- 36:46Speaker 1: It don't matter if they good. You don't know who
- 36:48Speaker 1: they are. You know who I am. You see I'm
- 36:50Speaker 1: making your favorite player scared to shoot like he's playing
- 36:53Speaker 1: against his big brother. All of this stuff. If he
- 36:56Speaker 1: had just showed up on the Spurs and put in
- 36:58Speaker 1: the same performance, the way MVP voting works, I bet
- 37:01Speaker 1: he would have been more likely to get it.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love that he made his case. I
- 37:07Speaker 2: loved it. Like, talk your shit, man. And, you know,
- 37:11Speaker 2: he said, I think.
- 37:13Speaker 3: It was to Van Pelt last night, about, like, you know,
- 37:18Speaker 3: I want to be an all-time great, I'm paraphrasing, and
- 37:20Speaker 3: so I'm not going to let any of these opportunities come.
- 37:23Speaker 3: And he's like, he seems to have an understanding that, like,
- 37:26Speaker 3: finishing second in MVP is not the type of thing
- 37:29Speaker 3: we talk about when you go into the Hall of Fame.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Yes, but Or in goat arguments.
- 37:33Speaker 1: But he's 22. This is how it works in this league.
- 37:38Speaker 1: He doesn't care. I know.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Well, like, I.
- 37:45Speaker 3: To this idea, right, I think we have to be
- 37:48Speaker 3: open to the possibility that the rules just do not
- 37:50Speaker 3: apply to him.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 37:52Speaker 3: Like, oh, Michael Jordan had to, like, lose to the
- 37:55Speaker 3: Celtics and the Pistons before he could ultimately, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 3: slay the dragon. And you got to crawl, then walk,
- 38:01Speaker 3: then run. Maybe not when you are autographing your All-Star
- 38:05Speaker 3: Game jersey for Joker and he asks you to add
- 38:09Speaker 3: a picture of an alien to it.
- 38:13Speaker 2: That video, it was like an eight-second clip. I'm like,
- 38:16Speaker 2: that is... Joker's the alien. And he's like in awe
- 38:22Speaker 2: of it.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Like, Giannis' kid is in awe of him because it's...
- 38:27Speaker 3: You watch a full game of the Spurs... and you
- 38:31Speaker 3: will see someone dribble towards the lane and then retreat.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah, like, oh, oh, oh, my bad. I didn't even
- 38:38Speaker 1: see you there, big dog.
- 38:39Speaker 3: It's the damn, like, not like try to bite a foul,
- 38:43Speaker 3: not like try to go around.
- 38:44Speaker 2: They, like, put it in reverse. That doesn't happen in
- 38:48Speaker 2: the NBA.
- 38:49Speaker 3: So it is a singular thing, and it's wild, and
- 38:53Speaker 3: I don't really know, like, Is he going to have
- 38:56Speaker 3: a 15-year prime?
- 38:57Speaker 2: Is his body going to hold up? I don't know.
- 38:59Speaker 3: But if it is, he legitimately could win 15 Defensive
- 39:03Speaker 3: Player of the Year awards and 10 titles.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I do think the playoffs are going to be
- 39:07Speaker 1: interesting because I think the argument against them, also against
- 39:14Speaker 1: the Pistons, is worth noting. The argument against them is
- 39:19Speaker 1: not simply that you have to go to the playoffs
- 39:23Speaker 1: to win in the playoffs, right? Like, yeah, I mean, okay,
- 39:26Speaker 1: that sounds ridiculous, but you understand what I mean, right? Like,
- 39:28Speaker 1: you're not just going to get there.
- 39:29Speaker 2: All the time.
- 39:30Speaker 1: The way in the first run.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Experience. There's something to it. Right.
- 39:34Speaker 1: But I think that we need to be a little
- 39:36Speaker 1: clearer when we talk about it, about why the experience
- 39:39Speaker 1: matters and the experience matters because playoff basketball is not
- 39:42Speaker 1: the same as regular season basketball. Like your ability to
- 39:45Speaker 1: run through a regular season is, is correlated to your
- 39:49Speaker 1: ability to win in the postseason, but not directly. It's
- 39:53Speaker 1: not really the same game when you start playing against
- 39:56Speaker 1: the same teams over and over again. And they're tricks
- 39:58Speaker 1: that guys pick up and they learn as it goes.
- 40:01Speaker 1: That's the reason why it's taken everybody a little bit
- 40:03Speaker 1: more time to make the climb because you're getting acclimated
- 40:06Speaker 1: to a new type of basketball. And then by the
- 40:08Speaker 1: time you do, your ass is home and you don't
- 40:10Speaker 1: get to do it again for another year, right?
- 40:14Speaker 3: Well, and sorry if I'm cutting you off here, but like,
- 40:17Speaker 3: To me, I think that way more applies to the
- 40:21Speaker 3: Pistons than the Spurs.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Because, like, I have seen– I've been calling the Pistons
- 40:25Speaker 2: the try-hard Pistons.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:27Speaker 3: But, like, we see teams like this almost every year. Like,
- 40:31Speaker 3: my Bulls under Thibodeau were the try-hard Bulls. The Raptors,
- 40:38Speaker 3: the Hawks. Like, we have seen, like, teams that basically
- 40:42Speaker 3: treat the regular season like the postseason. Yes. because of
- 40:46Speaker 3: a defensive mentality, because of youth, because of an insane coach, like.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Whatever the reason.
- 40:51Speaker 3: And then when everybody else ratchets up the intensity to
- 40:54Speaker 3: playoff level, their edge goes.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Away because now everyone is playing like that. And so, like,
- 40:59Speaker 2: to me, you saw it in, like, the All-Star game.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Like, Jalen Duren was, like, going insane and running all
- 41:04Speaker 3: over the place, and they're playing deep. They're fouling in
- 41:06Speaker 3: the All-Star game. It's like, oh, like, the Pistons just
- 41:08Speaker 3: are embracing Detroit basketball and JB Bickerstaff, and they're playing
- 41:12Speaker 3: their ass off all the time. I give the Pistons
- 41:14Speaker 3: basically no chance.
- 41:17Speaker 2: The Spurs, what if.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Victor Wimpinyama just plays 35 minutes a game in the
- 41:24Speaker 3: playoffs and they take the minutes restriction away? And so
- 41:27Speaker 3: it's like, I'm able to get you 41 and 18
- 41:31Speaker 3: in 28 minutes. Now I'm going to start getting you
- 41:35Speaker 3: 45 and 20. I think that there's just a clear
- 41:39Speaker 3: other level of that the Spurs might be able to
- 41:43Speaker 3: get to, and I have no idea what they're going
- 41:45Speaker 3: to do on that front in the playoffs. There's another
- 41:48Speaker 3: gear for them that I don't think exists for the Pistons.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I am curious to see also how the defenses
- 41:54Speaker 1: against Victor change, like what strategically teams are going to
- 41:58Speaker 1: cook up. And I am, all right, so right now
- 42:02Speaker 1: in the West, as we record this, the top six
- 42:04Speaker 1: teams are, The Thunder, the Spurs, the Lakers, the Nuggets,
- 42:09Speaker 1: the Rockets, and the Timberwolves. When I looked at it yesterday,
- 42:12Speaker 1: the Rockets were in six and the Timberwolves were at five.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, they're a half game separating each other right now. Right.
- 42:18Speaker 1: The reason I point that out and find it to
- 42:20Speaker 1: be important is I think most of us agree. The
- 42:25Speaker 1: Rockets and the Lakers do not have a chance at
- 42:27Speaker 1: winning the West. I know who does not agree with
- 42:30Speaker 1: that about the Lakers, but I don't think that the
- 42:32Speaker 1: Rockets and the Lakers. So the Rockets and the Lakers
- 42:35Speaker 1: get to play against each other. To me, that's great
- 42:38Speaker 1: news for San Antonio as they get to then go
- 42:42Speaker 1: play against a team that I don't think has a
- 42:44Speaker 1: chance at winning. Oklahoma City, if it turned out, Oklahoma
- 42:51Speaker 1: City could have a chance if it turned out that
- 42:53Speaker 1: the Rockets went down to six. It's Oklahoma City playing
- 42:56Speaker 1: the winner of Denver and Minnesota. This time, I would
- 42:59Speaker 1: think that Denver would get that. If we get the Thunder,
- 43:02Speaker 1: the Spurs, Laker Rocket, whichever one, Lakers I think would
- 43:06Speaker 1: probably be the team that I would pick in that series,
- 43:08Speaker 1: and the Nuggets as the semifinals in the West, whoo,
- 43:13Speaker 1: that's going to be fun.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I mean, it's always team no sleep, but
- 43:18Speaker 3: that is appointment viewing.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Meanwhile, in the East, the Celtics have just decided, okay,
- 43:28Speaker 1: we're here now. Yeah, yeah, don't ask us how Jason
- 43:30Speaker 1: Tatum got back so fast. Shit, I don't know either, man.
- 43:32Speaker 1: It's crazy. Anyway, they scored 53 points in the first
- 43:36Speaker 1: quarter against Miami.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, the.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Celtics are, they're deep. They shoot an insane number of threes.
- 43:44Speaker 3: I don't really like watching them because of how many
- 43:47Speaker 3: threes they shoot. It's a little offensive, but they are really,
- 43:50Speaker 3: really good. And they definitely are probably the only team, realistically,
- 43:55Speaker 3: that you can pick to come out of the East.
- 43:59Speaker 3: I know we disagreed, and I don't want to talk
- 44:00Speaker 3: too much about it because it's a take that's not
- 44:02Speaker 3: aging very well. But I actually liked the Harden trade,
- 44:06Speaker 3: and I was pretty intrigued. I was pretty intrigued by
- 44:09Speaker 3: an Evan Mobley, Jared Allen, James Harden, Donovan Mitchell top four.
- 44:13Speaker 3: And I still think that could end up being our
- 44:15Speaker 3: Eastern Conference final. But the Celtics are clearly the best
- 44:18Speaker 3: team in the East. The only thing I will say
- 44:20Speaker 3: about the Lakers, because I have been a huge skeptic
- 44:23Speaker 3: of them, the team that Luka carried to the finals
- 44:29Speaker 3: a couple of years ago for the Mavericks.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Was the supporting cast.
- 44:34Speaker 3: They had Lively and Washington and Gafford.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Kyrie Irving.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. But at least Kyrie can be like...
- 44:46Speaker 2: I mean, Austin Reeves and LeBron James are pretty good offensively.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Offensive players. Yeah. I don't know.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Is this supporting cast much worse? I think you could
- 44:55Speaker 3: argue certainly that the Spurs and Thunder are much better
- 44:58Speaker 3: at the top than that Mavericks team had to go through.
- 45:01Speaker 2: No question.
- 45:02Speaker 3: But is this Lakers supporting cast much worse than that
- 45:05Speaker 3: Mavericks team?
- 45:06Speaker 1: All I'm saying is I think that for them to win,
- 45:09Speaker 1: it requires literally depending on DeAndre Ayton. And I've seen
- 45:14Speaker 1: how that goes. Yeah. That's the same thing with the Rockets.
- 45:19Speaker 1: The Rockets supporting cast isn't bad, but where it's flawed,
- 45:22Speaker 1: it's fatal.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Yes.
- 45:25Speaker 2: And listen, the, the Lakers are.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Right now getting a pretty incredible amount of like effort
- 45:35Speaker 3: and production, but not necessarily statistical, but just like, like
- 45:39Speaker 3: Deandre Ayton is playing hard and Marcus.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Smart is healthy.
- 45:46Speaker 3: I don't know that both of those things are going
- 45:47Speaker 3: to survive two months of playoff basketball.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:51Speaker 3: I don't believe that they are a top 10 defensive
- 45:54Speaker 3: team in the league like they have been for this
- 45:57Speaker 3: stretch of time.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Yeah, no chance you can keep them. Not with your
- 45:59Speaker 1: three best players being those guys.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Right. So I don't believe that.
- 46:03Speaker 3: But again, Luka is on a level right now where
- 46:08Speaker 3: he can win you some games.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yeah. He can win you some games on the offensive
- 46:12Speaker 2: side of the floor.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Well, he's also doing the thing that I think is
- 46:17Speaker 1: in this day and age becoming a very underrated skill.
- 46:20Speaker 1: It is one of the things that held me up
- 46:23Speaker 1: in acknowledging some of the greatness of Steph Curry, which
- 46:27Speaker 1: is in my world. Great players get to the free
- 46:31Speaker 1: throw line.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 46:33Speaker 3: I think Luka is number one in free throw attempts
- 46:36Speaker 3: per game and Shea is number two.
- 46:38Speaker 1: At 10 a game, right? Think about how crazy this is.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Part of this is because Luka can take all the shots,
- 46:44Speaker 1: but he shoots 11 threes a game in 10 free throws.
- 46:50Speaker 2: A game, right?
- 46:50Speaker 1: The best shot in basketball is a free throw.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Yep.
- 46:53Speaker 1: That is the easiest.
- 46:54Speaker 2: No defense.
- 46:54Speaker 1: You get to stand there. It's a shot you get
- 46:56Speaker 1: to practice. It's the only shot that you really get
- 46:57Speaker 1: to practice all the time under basically the same conditions.
- 47:00Speaker 1: He's shooting 10 of those a game and he's shooting four.
- 47:02Speaker 1: 11 threes and making four of them. Now, how are
- 47:07Speaker 1: the refs going to whistle him? And in the playoffs,
- 47:10Speaker 1: will that childish man be able to hold his shit
- 47:14Speaker 1: together when he's not getting the calls that he wants
- 47:16Speaker 1: and or expects?
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw it with Shea a little bit last year.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Like Shea didn't get the exact, like the same number
- 47:22Speaker 3: of free throw attempts per game in the playoffs, but
- 47:25Speaker 3: they are, they are so good.
- 47:26Speaker 2: And so deep, they were able to eat it out.
- 47:29Speaker 3: And listen, as a, as a, I have picked the
- 47:32Speaker 3: Thunder now three years in a row.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Like, I think that they are the best team.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Part of it is a bias of doing reporting around
- 47:39Speaker 3: Sam Presti for the book Pipeline to the Pros. Like,
- 47:43Speaker 3: what I love about the Thunder is they don't put
- 47:47Speaker 3: a single player who's bad at defense. Every single player
- 47:51Speaker 3: who gets minutes for them is a two-way basketball player.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Or two-way is not the right way to say it.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but I see what you mean. Like, if you
- 47:58Speaker 1: can't guard, you can't play here.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Right. Every guy. Austin Reeves is not a Thunder guy.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Like they go out and get Hartenstein. They go out
- 48:07Speaker 2: and get Caruso.
- 48:08Speaker 3: They go out like their specialists tend to be more
- 48:11Speaker 3: defensive oriented than offensive oriented. And then their players on
- 48:14Speaker 3: offense are also really good and they're crazy deep. So
- 48:17Speaker 3: there's not a single defensive liability on their roster. So
- 48:21Speaker 3: I just love how the team is constructed. I think
- 48:23Speaker 3: it's great. But I was surprised that Denver took them
- 48:30Speaker 3: to seventh.
- 48:31Speaker 2: And that the Pacers, obviously, that was shocking, took him
- 48:33Speaker 2: to seven.
- 48:34Speaker 3: So, like, there is a possibility that some of what
- 48:37Speaker 3: they do gets neutralized in the playoffs as it gets
- 48:40Speaker 3: officiated differently and everyone else's defensive intensity ratchets up. But
- 48:45Speaker 3: I do still think the Thunder are the clear best
- 48:48Speaker 3: team in the sport by a comfortable margin.
- 48:52Speaker 1: And I just want to point out, and I think
- 48:54Speaker 1: they'll have a boost for being champions because I think
- 48:56Speaker 1: being champions matters. But they were Tyrese Halliburton Achilles away
- 49:02Speaker 1: from potentially losing a game seven at home. And remember,
- 49:06Speaker 1: Denver pushed them all the way to the game seven, too.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's what I said.
- 49:12Speaker 3: I thought they were going to waltz through last year
- 49:16Speaker 3: and they didn't. So I have to be open to
- 49:19Speaker 3: the possibility. that I am just wrong about that. Cause
- 49:22Speaker 3: I was last year. They just ultimately held the trophy up,
- 49:25Speaker 3: but like Chet is better. Chet is better. And they
- 49:30Speaker 3: still are the best team in the league. As I
- 49:32Speaker 3: mentioned earlier with getting basically nothing from Jalen Williams this year,
- 49:35Speaker 3: like they're going to be healthy going into the playoffs.
- 49:37Speaker 3: They are battle-tested they're, And Chet Holmgren is significantly better
- 49:42Speaker 3: this year than he was last year.
- 49:43Speaker 1: We're going to learn a lot about the regions of
- 49:45Speaker 1: the digital era because poor Adam Silver, you've got a
- 49:48Speaker 1: potential 10-year rivalry with maybe your two worst markets in
- 49:54Speaker 1: the whole league. It's going to suck for these NBA
- 49:58Speaker 1: guys who are going to spend the next 10 years
- 50:00Speaker 1: flying from San Antonio to Dallas and then Dallas to
- 50:03Speaker 1: Oklahoma City.
- 50:06Speaker 2: That is exactly right. They're going to have to add
- 50:08Speaker 2: some direct flights.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Let me tell you, man. If they add direct flights
- 50:12Speaker 1: from Oklahoma City to San Antonio, they will just be
- 50:15Speaker 1: for two weeks.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Brian Windhorse is going to start booking that in April. Oh,
- 50:20Speaker 2: my God, man.
- 50:21Speaker 1: That's where they are. But ladies and gentlemen, that is
- 50:24Speaker 1: Danny Parkins. Check him out on First Things First, FS1,
- 50:28Speaker 1: 5 o'clock Eastern. And do you get to revel in
- 50:31Speaker 1: the Emmy nomination?
- 50:33Speaker 3: You know, I'm a listen, I get to revel in
- 50:35Speaker 3: it and that I get to work with all these people.
- 50:38Speaker 3: They are amazing in front of the camera and especially behind.
- 50:41Speaker 3: But I can tell you that the congratulations have been
- 50:44Speaker 3: going to the people who have been there a lot
- 50:45Speaker 3: longer than me.
- 50:46Speaker 1: I understand this. I just want to let you guys
- 50:48Speaker 1: know this in advance. And this is what's going to
- 50:50Speaker 1: stink for those guys. This became a very big controversy
- 50:53Speaker 1: very recently, although they may have changed the rule.
- 50:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 50:55Speaker 1: But at least it used to be back in the
- 50:56Speaker 1: day that the host didn't get a trophy.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 51:01Speaker 1: Yeah, remember ESPN got in trouble because they were cooking
- 51:03Speaker 1: up the fake trophies for people. Oh, yeah.
- 51:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:06Speaker 1: And what they were doing was they were putting, if
- 51:08Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken, they were putting on the list of producers.
- 51:11Speaker 1: It would be like Shmurp Murp Street or whatever. Like,
- 51:15Speaker 1: and so the people would get trophies and then they
- 51:17Speaker 1: got caught. So I don't know if you're going to
- 51:19Speaker 1: be able to get you one of these. You know
- 51:21Speaker 1: what I'm saying?
- 51:22Speaker 3: I know I won't be able to get one of these,
- 51:25Speaker 3: but like if Nick doesn't get him one, if he wins-
- 51:28Speaker 3: He will be low-key devastated, but it's– yeah, man, that
- 51:32Speaker 3: was a very cool thing. You know you followed the
- 51:35Speaker 3: journey of the show. They are– it's a great show
- 51:39Speaker 3: that I get to be a very small part of,
- 51:41Speaker 3: and that's not like fake humility.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I would tell you if I thought that I was the.
- 51:44Speaker 3: Reason for it because the joke was made like, oh, Parkins,
- 51:46Speaker 3: you get added to the show and we finally get nominated.
- 51:49Speaker 2: They've deserved it for a while. It's an incredible show.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I'm just saying I've put a show over the top before.
- 51:55Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I've been in a position
- 51:59Speaker 1: to do that. Just go ahead and let them tell you.
- 52:01Speaker 1: You ain't got to correct them. You know what I'm saying?
- 52:04Speaker 1: That's what it is. You ain't got to say it,
- 52:05Speaker 1: but you ain't got to correct them.
- 52:08Speaker 2: That's right. And Nick knows. That's what really matters. As
- 52:12Speaker 2: long as Nick knows the real difference. That's enough for me.
- 52:17Speaker 1: There it is, man. Appreciate you, brother.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Thanks, man. Talk to you soon.
