- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:14this Monday, the 28th of April. And we are going to read the
- 0:20rest in its entirety of the book of first Peter.
- 0:24Yeah, that bullish disciple who shot from the hip.
- 0:28He continues to share these words of encouragement to live
- 0:32out the faith that people would have found so foreign to be
- 0:36living out and their neighbours would have found it even more
- 0:38foreign as they worked out or tried to work out what is wrong
- 0:41with my neighbour. Since they started following
- 0:43this Jesus guy, they've gone completely bonkers and they
- 0:45tried to talk them out of it. And today's reading begins with
- 0:50the word so, which means that it's following on from last
- 0:54week's reading, First Peter chapter 1.
- 0:57And you may remember that the end of the last chapter was
- 1:00talking about the fact that we are citizens of an eternal
- 1:04Kingdom, not the Kingdom that passes away on this planet, this
- 1:09world where we live for but a short time.
- 1:12And so that's where Peter picks up as he continues urging Jesus
- 1:17disciples spread out around the known world to continue holding
- 1:20fast to their faith and the teachings attached to it.
- 1:24So friends, join me as we continue along hearing the words
- 1:28of that bloke Peter in First Peter chapter 2.
- 1:42So get rid of all evil behaviour.
- 1:44Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy and all
- 1:49unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must
- 1:53crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full
- 1:57experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment.
- 2:02Now that you've had a taste of the Lord's kindness, you are
- 2:08coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God's
- 2:12temple. He was rejected by people, but
- 2:15he was chosen by God for great honour and you are living stones
- 2:21that God is building into his spiritual temple.
- 2:24What's more, you are his holy priests.
- 2:28Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual
- 2:32sacrifices. A Please God, as the Scriptures
- 2:35say. I am placing a cornerstone in
- 2:39Jerusalem, chosen for great honour, and anyone who trusts in
- 2:43Him will never be disgraced. Yes, you who trust him recognise
- 2:49the honour God has given him. But for those who reject Him,
- 2:53the stone that the builders rejected has now become the
- 2:57cornerstone. And He is the stone that makes
- 3:02people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.
- 3:06They stumble because they do not obey God's Word, and so they
- 3:11meet the fate that was planned for them.
- 3:14But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people.
- 3:19You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own
- 3:23possession. As a result, you can show others
- 3:27the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness
- 3:31into his wonderful light. Once you had no identity as a
- 3:38people. Now you are God's people.
- 3:41Once he received no mercy, now you have received God's mercy.
- 3:47Dear friends, I warn you as temporary residents and
- 3:50foreigners to keep away from worldly desires that wage war
- 3:55against your very souls. Be careful to live properly
- 3:59among your unbelieving neighbours.
- 4:02Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your
- 4:06honourable behaviour, and they will give honour to God when He
- 4:10judges the world. For the Lord's sake, submit to
- 4:15all human authority, whether the King as head of state or the
- 4:19officials he has appointed. For the King has sent them to
- 4:23punish those who do wrong and to honour those who do right.
- 4:27It is God's will that your honourable lives should silence
- 4:31those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you.
- 4:36For you are free, yet you are God's slaves.
- 4:40So don't use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.
- 4:44Respect everyone and love the family of believers.
- 4:48Fear God and respect the king. You who are slaves must submit
- 4:55to your masters with all respect.
- 4:58Do what they tell you, not only if they are kind and reasonable,
- 5:02but even if they are cruel. For God is pleased when
- 5:06conscious of His will, you patiently endure unjust
- 5:10treatment. Of course, you get no credit for
- 5:13being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong.
- 5:17But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is
- 5:22pleased with you. For God called you to do good,
- 5:26even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you.
- 5:31He is your example and you must follow in His steps.
- 5:36He never sinned nor ever deceived anyone.
- 5:40He did not retaliate when He was insulted nor threaten revenge
- 5:44when He suffered. He left His case in the hands of
- 5:48God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins
- 5:54in His body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live
- 6:00for what is right. By His wounds you are healed.
- 6:06Once you were like sheep who wandered away, but now you have
- 6:10turned to your Shepherd, the guardian of your souls, our Lord
- 6:24Jesus. This writing just cuts to the
- 6:26truth as we are just humbled by so many incredible things
- 6:32contained in this chapter. Our Lord, help tune our hearts
- 6:37to hear you and to receive the purity of your spiritual
- 6:42teaching that doesn't get diluted by the loud voices of
- 6:46this world. Because You have chosen us and
- 6:49made us this royal priesthood to live out lives of worship to You
- 6:56alone. You've given us a new identity,
- 7:01and You have taken away all that would separate us from a holy
- 7:05God so that we can truly be in Your presence.
- 7:11You've called us out of the darkness of this world into your
- 7:14wonderful light. Oh, what an incredible gift you
- 7:17give us. Thank you Jesus that You did all
- 7:22of this out of your kindness and Your love for us would help us
- 7:32live deeply, being sustained in your kindness and love and not
- 7:40get drawn into the tit for tat nature of this world.
- 7:46Thank you for your love, thank you for your invitation and for
- 7:51doing everything for us so that we can be saved and be your
- 7:55brothers and sisters. Children of the living God,
- 7:59forgiven and holy once more, we worship you, our wonderful Lord,
- 8:07and we thank you for all of this and your name, Amen.
