- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, real talk.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: There was a period of time when I was cranking out podcast episodes like it was my job.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Which I mean it kind of was, but here's the thing.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I was treating my show like a content machine.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So I showed up, I'd hit record, drop the episode, and repeat.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And I was consistent, like very consistent.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I was showing up every single week.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I had decent numbers, but I had almost nothing to show for it in my business.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Because here's what I didn't understand at the time.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: My listeners weren't buying from me.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Not because the content was bad, but because I had never actually built trust with him.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I was just creating content.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And if that hits a little close to home, then I want you to stay with me because today we're gonna be talking about the shift that changes everything.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And that is from treating your podcast like a content machine to using it as the trust-building machine that it actually is meant to be.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Let's jump into the episode.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Podcasting for Moms, the show for moms in business ready to start, grow, and scale a podcast that turns your listeners into buyers.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I'm Jenny Summerson, a podcast strategist and fellow mom entrepreneur.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: You're in the right place if you want to learn how to start and grow a podcast that attracts your ideal clients and really does the heavy lifting for you when it comes to selling your offers, all while balancing life as a busy mom.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Are you ready to create a podcast that grows your income, impact, and influence?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Let's make podcasting work for you.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Because as moms, we know how to get things done.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Alright, let's jump into the episode.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey, and welcome to Podcasting for Moms, the podcast for mom entrepreneurs who are done letting social media run their business and are ready to use podcasting as their primary marketing channel instead.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I'm Janie Sunison, a podcast strategist and producer, and I am so glad that you're here.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: If you're new here, hey, welcome to the show.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And if you've been around for a while, you already know that we keep it real and strategic around here.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And today's episode is no exception.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So let's get into it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So let's just name the thing that no one talks about when they start a podcast.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Most people launch their show thinking, I need to create content, consistent content, good content, and the more that I create, the more my business will grow.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And I totally understand that.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: That's the message everywhere.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Show up consistently, batch your content, be prolific.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: It sounds right, but here's what that mindset actually produces.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: A podcast that sounds like a blog that also sounds like a social media feed.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: It's just content.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And content without connection does not convert.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Your podcast is not a content machine, it is a trust building machine.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And that is a completely different job.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you something.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Think about the last thing that you bought: a program, a course, or service, any of those things from someone online.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Why did you buy it from that particular person and not the 12 other people offering something similar?
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I would bet it's because you trusted them.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe you'd been listening to their podcast or reading their blog or social media content or watching them on YouTube long enough that when they made the offer, it didn't feel like a pitch.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: It felt like a natural next step.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: That's what your podcast can do, but only if you're intentional about it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So here's the problem with the content machine mindset.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: You're truly just focused on output.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Episodes out the door, the box gets checked.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: But trust isn't built by volume.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Trust is built by depth.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: By making your listener feel like you get her.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Like you've been in her shoes, like you know exactly what she needs, and you're not gonna waste her time.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Every single episode is an opportunity to build that or to miss it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So the question I want you to sit with is are your episodes building a relationship or are they just filling up a feed?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: The second thing.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Your listener journey is not an accident.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So a content machine has no memory.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Every episode is its own thing: a topic, a tip, a guest, a concept.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And of course, there's nothing wrong with the variety, but if your episodes don't have a through line, then your listener has no clear path to follow.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: She just consumes and consumes and consumes and then moves on.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: A trust building machine is different.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It has a true listener journey, and that journey is intentional.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So, what do I mean by that?
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It means that your episodes are doing something specific in a specific order.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Some episodes are meant to attract new listeners.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: They're discoverable.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: They answer a question that someone's searching for.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Where on the other hand, some episodes are deepening the relationship.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: So they share your story, your philosophy, and your perspective.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And then some other episodes are bridging the listener to your offers, so they naturally lead somewhere.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And when I'm planning content for my clients or for my own show, even, I'm not just asking what should I talk about this week?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I'm asking, where is my listener in her journey right now?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And what does she need to hear to take that next step?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: That is a fundamentally different question.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And it produces fundamentally different content.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: The listener who finds you for the first time, the listener who finds you for the first time needs something different than the one who has been with you for six months.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And if every episode's just a content drop, then you're not serving either of them particularly well.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Then we have the third thing.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Every episode earns or loses trust.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And this is the one I want to really land with you because I think it's the mindset shift that changes how you actually show up when you sit down to record your episodes.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Every episode either earns trust or loses it.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: There is no neutral.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So an episode earns trust when it delivers exactly what it promises in the title and description, respects your listener's time, aka gets to the point and doesn't ramble on and on and on.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Teaches something that she can actually use, not just something that's interesting, and sounds like a real human who actually cares, not just like a checkbox on a content calendar.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: On the other hand, an episode loses trust, or at a minimum, fails to build it when it overpromises and underdelivers, runs 45 minutes when it should only be 10 to 12, teaches at your listener instead of with her, and feels like you're just filling a publishing schedule.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And here's the one thing that stings a little bit.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: An episode that has nothing to do with why your listener showed up in the first place, that is gonna lose trust too.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Not because it's bad content or anything, but because it sends a signal that you're not clear on who exactly you're serving.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Clarity, consistency, and relevance all build trust.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: So before you hit record, I want you to ask yourself this question.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: What is this specific episode doing for my listener?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: What does she know, feel, or believe after listening that she didn't before?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And is that moving her towards something?
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: If the answer is yes, then I want you to record that episode.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: But if the answer is, well, it's a good topic, then I want you to go back to the drawing board.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I don't want to leave you with a mindset shift and absolutely no action because that's not how we do things around here.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want you to actually do with this.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: So I want you to look at your last five episodes.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Or if you haven't launched yet, then look at your planned episodes and ask yourself these three questions.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: The first question is Does each episode have a clear purpose beyond creating content?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: What is it teaching and who specifically is it for?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: The second question I want you to ask yourself is is there a thread running through them?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: So would a lit new listener who found the episode three and then listened to episode five feel like she's on a journey with you?
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And then number three, is there a natural next step at the end of each episode?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Not a hard sell, but just a next step.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So whether that's a quiz, a resource, another episode you're leading them to, something that keeps her in your world and continues to deepen that relationship.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: If you answered I'm not sure or no to any of those three questions, that is your starting point because that is where trust is leaking.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And speaking of a natural next step, I have something for you.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So if you've been wondering whether your podcast is actually working, like whether the strategy behind it is set up to grow your business and not just your download account, I want you to go take the podcast growth scorecard.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: This is a free quiz that you can get by going to podcastingformoms.co slash scorecard, and it will give you a clear picture of where your podcast stands right now.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So what's working, what's costing you listeners, and what's actually getting in the way of turning those listeners into buyers.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: It takes about three minutes to complete and it's way more useful than obsessing over your download stats.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: So once again, go take it at podcastingformoms.co slash scorecard.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I'll make sure to link it in the show notes as well.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: All right, that is a wrap on today's episode.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Remember, your podcast is not just a place to put content, it is a relationship.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: It's the thing that makes a stranger trust you enough to buy from you.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I want you to treat it like that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: All right, I'll see you in next week's episode.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And until then, go build something good.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Thank you for tuning into Podcasting for Moms.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I hope today's episode gave you the tools and inspiration you need to make your podcast work smarter, not harder.
