- 2:16Speaker 2: Veggies Day today, and I posted up the Facebook question
- 2:21Speaker 2: of today, what's that one veggie that no matter how
- 2:28Speaker 2: much salt and butter you're soaking it with, you just
- 2:34Speaker 2: cannot put it down that's the question of the day
- 2:39Speaker 2: this morning. I'm gonna ask my friend went in that
- 2:41Speaker 2: in just a little bit. First off, though the World
- 2:43Speaker 2: newspaper on a Wednesday, Deb Phillips with us, Good morning, Deb,
- 2:46Speaker 2: How are you?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Good morning JD doing good?
- 2:49Speaker 2: What's that vegetable, Deb that you just can't stomach? On
- 2:55Speaker 2: this National Eat your Veggie's Day today? Is there one?
- 2:58Speaker 2: Is it Brussels sprouts for you to Oh?
- 3:01Speaker 3: No, I do like Brussels sprouts. I don't like okrah
- 3:06Speaker 3: or lima beans.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I forgot about okra. You know my dad. My dad
- 3:14Speaker 2: used to do lima beans in the microwave and we
- 3:18Speaker 2: used to call them crunchies because they were still frozen
- 3:20Speaker 2: on the inside. But anyway, Deb, it's so great to
- 3:25Speaker 2: have you on the air every Wednesday. I loved reading
- 3:29Speaker 2: The World last week. I know I'm gonna love reading
- 3:32Speaker 2: it again today. Chris will be here soon. It comes
- 3:34Speaker 2: out every single Wednesday morning. Tell me, tell us, tell everyone,
- 3:40Speaker 2: Deb what's in there? Today?

- 5:21Speaker 3: that in there. Yes, and I've already used my coupon.

- 5:29Speaker 2: I'll treat you. I absolutely when you say the words

- 5:37Speaker 3: It's great.
- 5:39Speaker 2: That's fantastic, Deb, Thank you ever so much. There's some
- 5:42Speaker 2: great stuff going on, you know, I reading about the
- 5:46Speaker 2: fourth annual Worcester Arts Festival. I mean there's just there's
- 5:50Speaker 2: everything is in the world.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, well this next week we'll have you know, all
- 5:55Speaker 3: the different Fourth of July celebrations will be in next
- 6:00Speaker 3: week's paper.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I get so much information from you guys. We've got
- 6:04Speaker 2: some great things happening in our community. Course, the food
- 6:07Speaker 2: trucks up at the Central fromaut Marketplace parking lot every
- 6:11Speaker 2: Sunday all summer long. We got Thunder road racing coming
- 6:14Speaker 2: up tomorrow night. There's just tons of and tonight curry
- 6:17Speaker 2: you park right here in the Granite City. We got
- 6:20Speaker 2: the food trucks, the concerts, we got the Farmer's market
- 6:24Speaker 2: all starting this afternoon, and the weather should be just
- 6:27Speaker 2: fine for it.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I'm hoping that's that's a really fun fun thing.
- 6:31Speaker 2: To go to it really is. Thank you so much, Deb.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Anything else you can think of this morning.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I'm good good, all right.
- 6:40Speaker 2: You let us know if there's anything else that you
- 6:42Speaker 2: can think of that we can promote this week.
- 6:44Speaker 3: And we're on it all right, Thanks dadie.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Thank you, Deb. Deb Phillips from the world right there,
- 6:50Speaker 2: Central from Out's favorite weekly newspaper. How do I know that?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Not just because it says it right here, just because
- 6:58Speaker 2: it is and has been for a long time. We're
- 7:01Speaker 2: talking about almost as old as I am, fifty plus years.
- 7:07Speaker 2: We'll just leave it at that. Winton Buddington is my
- 7:11Speaker 2: guest this morning from Sweethearts and Heroes. He returns to
- 7:15Speaker 2: the airwaves, went and good morning, my friend. How the
- 7:18Speaker 2: heck are you?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Good morning, j D. I'm awesome today. How are you great? Man?
- 7:23Speaker 2: So let me start out first by saying Happy Wednesday,
- 7:28Speaker 2: Happy hump day to you man. What's that veggie? What's
- 7:32Speaker 2: that one veggie Winton that you just no matter what
- 7:36Speaker 2: you do to it, no matter what is sprinkle on it,
- 7:39Speaker 2: you just can't put it down.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 5: You know, initially I might have said Brussels sprouts, but
- 7:46Speaker 5: I've really taken a liking to roasted Brussels sprouts that
- 7:51Speaker 5: you cook them up with bacon and drizzle him with
- 7:54Speaker 5: some honey.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Honey or maple syrup.
- 7:59Speaker 5: And so I can't say Brussels sprunts anymore, but I'd
- 8:03Speaker 5: have to go with the line of beans because I
- 8:09Speaker 5: use we do have lime of beans in our freezer,
- 8:11Speaker 5: but I use them as the ice pack, not the vegetable.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So I love that. That's great, Oh man, winning just
- 8:23Speaker 2: how that car?
- 8:24Speaker 1: You?
- 8:24Speaker 2: Man? Where are you right now?
- 8:27Speaker 5: Well, you know, it seems like every time we talk,
- 8:29Speaker 5: I'm in a different place. So I'm actually out in Indianapolis,
- 8:34Speaker 5: Indiana right now. My brother in law lives out here
- 8:38Speaker 5: with his son, and my mother in law.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Is out here now.
- 8:43Speaker 5: In an assistant living and so we come out here
- 8:46Speaker 5: as often as we can to spend a little time
- 8:50Speaker 5: with them.
- 8:51Speaker 4: And so we're out here. Tomorrow we'll be driving back
- 8:55Speaker 4: to New York.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So you said Indianapolis, Yep, Wow, that's awesome. What's the
- 9:02Speaker 2: weather like out there?
- 9:04Speaker 5: Oh, it's it's been great. Today's a beautiful right now.
- 9:09Speaker 5: It's sixty five and sunny. It's gonna be a gorgeous.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Day to day, low humidity, So yeah, we're at sixty
- 9:15Speaker 2: three with I would say mostly sunny skies right now.
- 9:18Speaker 2: We're gonna warm up about ten but some some weather
- 9:21Speaker 2: coming in for tomorrow and Friday looks like possibly in
- 9:24Speaker 2: the form of some thundershowers here. But let's let's jump
- 9:28Speaker 2: in head first to Sweethearts and Heroes and what you
- 9:32Speaker 2: guys are doing. You know, I was having a conversation
- 9:34Speaker 2: yesterday with someone and they're like, there's just so much
- 9:38Speaker 2: going on with what is Sweethearts and Heroes and that's
- 9:46Speaker 2: that's a lot to unpack. You guys are and Tom's
- 9:50Speaker 2: at fault for that. Yeah, there's just you guys do
- 9:54Speaker 2: so much. There's so much happening. We say, the world's
- 9:59Speaker 2: numbermber one student empowerment organization.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just it's been an amazing year for us.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I think this year we had Josiah and Pat were
- 10:16Speaker 5: booked pretty much every day up until this past Monday
- 10:24Speaker 5: was the last visit in a school that we had
- 10:28Speaker 5: scheduled for.
- 10:28Speaker 4: The year, so.
- 10:31Speaker 5: And Tom and Rick frequently every other week they were
- 10:37Speaker 5: booked this year. So it's an incredible year. And then
- 10:41Speaker 5: with all of the electrical contractor circle work that we're
- 10:45Speaker 5: doing now, and we had a partnership with the Montgomery
- 10:48Speaker 5: County Sheriff's Office in New York and doing circles with
- 10:52Speaker 5: their deputies and school resource officers. So it's been we
- 10:57Speaker 5: got a lot of different different pieces going.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So you guys at Sweethearts and Heroes aren't just saying
- 11:05Speaker 2: all right, school's out for the summer. We're all on
- 11:08Speaker 2: vacation for the next couple of months.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Now. We you know, we try to give everybody a
- 11:14Speaker 4: little bit of a breather in the summer. But you know,
- 11:19Speaker 4: we've got.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Joe's going to be working with a school district in
- 11:24Speaker 5: their summer program. He's going to be doing a circle
- 11:27Speaker 5: training for students for six visits over three weeks in
- 11:32Speaker 5: their their summer program, training the older students to run
- 11:36Speaker 5: circles with the younger students. That's actually going to be
- 11:41Speaker 5: up in Vermont at Johnson State UH and working with their.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Summer Trio UH students and their.
- 11:57Speaker 5: The students that are helping run that the bridge program
- 12:01Speaker 5: for students coming into the college in August.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Wow, Tom and.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Ricker Actually next week they're going to be back up
- 12:10Speaker 5: in Alaska doing circles with the Lineman Electrical companies up
- 12:15Speaker 5: in Alaska, and he's got a couple more of those
- 12:18Speaker 5: type of trips the summer.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Rick is going to be working with.
- 12:25Speaker 5: The Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Group that he's done the last
- 12:28Speaker 5: three years in Pennsylvania for three or four visits this summer.
- 12:34Speaker 5: So it's closed down a little bit, but it's still
- 12:38Speaker 5: a busy, busy time for us.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I would guess that Tom would have plenty to say
- 12:45Speaker 2: to these line workers as we're approaching Father's Day and
- 12:52Speaker 2: understanding that many fathers are not able to be with
- 12:57Speaker 2: their kids on Father's Day weekend, not able to be
- 13:00Speaker 2: with their families, you know, like like like Kyle was saying,
- 13:08Speaker 2: it's like, you know, when when we need line workers,
- 13:15Speaker 2: we need them right now, no matter what is going on.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Kind of like the military, it's it's it's the first
- 13:25Speaker 2: priority in your life more than anything else.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Yeah, And you talked about, you know this, you might
- 13:32Speaker 5: have some thunderstorms coming in interesting experience last week for
- 13:37Speaker 5: me being out here in Indianapolis, we had thunderstorms and
- 13:41Speaker 5: we had tornado sirens going, and you know, we're trying
- 13:45Speaker 5: to watch some of the Stanley Cup and it kept
- 13:48Speaker 5: getting interrupted for tornado warnings, which is not something I'd
- 13:52Speaker 5: experienced before, but just thinking about you know, in those
- 13:57Speaker 5: times when there are those disasters, that the people that
- 14:02Speaker 5: get in their trucks and get out there to try
- 14:06Speaker 5: to get everything back the way it should be. So
- 14:11Speaker 5: does the linemen just drop everything and go no matter what?
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, there's can be a lot of dads without their
- 14:17Speaker 2: kids this weekend everywhere I said, across the country.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, And I think that that's you know, don't
- 14:26Speaker 5: I don't have kids of my own, but as a
- 14:29Speaker 5: principal for fourteen years and thirty two and a half
- 14:32Speaker 5: years in education, you know, I had a thousand students
- 14:35Speaker 5: in my building when I was principal, and so I
- 14:40Speaker 5: looked at them like my own kids, And that's I
- 14:44Speaker 5: mean that the I think a lot of men struggle
- 14:48Speaker 5: with that role of fatherhood, being that role model and
- 14:51Speaker 5: being there to provide for their family and what we
- 14:56Speaker 5: traditionally expected them as men. And but also you know,
- 15:01Speaker 5: as we do our circle work, it's it's how do
- 15:04Speaker 5: you how do you also show that vulnerability?
- 15:07Speaker 4: How do you show that that side of you that
- 15:10Speaker 4: we all have, but some of us just keep locked up.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Josh Miller from Vermont. Fatherhood comes in here the
- 15:19Speaker 2: second Monday of every month, and we sit down and
- 15:22Speaker 2: we talk just about fatherhood alone and what it means
- 15:28Speaker 2: to be a father and the difference between being a
- 15:30Speaker 2: father and being a dad, you know, and the standards
- 15:37Speaker 2: that we are held to, the expectations that we are
- 15:41Speaker 2: are held to. You know, It's it's not easy, you know.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I was just a couple of nights ago. I was
- 15:50Speaker 2: the only parent in the house for a little while,
- 15:52Speaker 2: had chicken cooking on the grill, and had a little
- 15:56Speaker 2: girl standing in the backyard with a softball love on
- 16:01Speaker 2: softball in her hand, staring at me while I was
- 16:04Speaker 2: on the patio tending to the grill, trying to get
- 16:11Speaker 2: dinner right, trying to get dinner right, but also the
- 16:17Speaker 2: unspoken communication in someone's eyes is really intense. We'll just say,
- 16:25Speaker 2: We'll just say that the chicken was a little crispy
- 16:31Speaker 2: that night, but I got in a few catches. And
- 16:35Speaker 2: sometimes you just just got to do what you gotta
- 16:39Speaker 2: do to You got to do what you think is
- 16:43Speaker 2: right at the time and reprioritize.
- 16:47Speaker 5: And those those moments in education we call them teachable moments.
- 16:52Speaker 5: To take advantage of that present themselves that you might
- 16:56Speaker 5: not have fully planned for, but it's it's the moment
- 17:00Speaker 5: you need to take advantage of, to have that time
- 17:03Speaker 5: with that ball flying back and forth and yeah, a
- 17:07Speaker 5: conversation at the same.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Time, you know, exactly this weekend, we have a few
- 17:14Speaker 2: more graduations that are pending. This this is a big
- 17:20Speaker 2: time in so many lives. There's all kinds of different graduations.
- 17:26Speaker 2: We're graduating from high school and we're getting ready for
- 17:30Speaker 2: that major gear shift in life, whatever it may be,
- 17:35Speaker 2: whether it's college or otherwise, whether we're jumping into the workforce,
- 17:41Speaker 2: graduating from college whole nother story, and graduating from middle
- 17:50Speaker 2: school or middle school into high school, elementary school in
- 17:53Speaker 2: the middle school. This is a time of transition. It's
- 17:58Speaker 2: a time of excitement for many students. It's a time
- 18:02Speaker 2: of pride for many families for the graduate. What's some
- 18:09Speaker 2: of the messages that you think sweethearts and heroes hopes
- 18:15Speaker 2: that these graduates will resonate with as they shift into
- 18:25Speaker 2: the next gear, whatever that may be, whatever stage that
- 18:28Speaker 2: might be in life. What are some of the primary
- 18:32Speaker 2: things that you're like, you know, we worked with these schools,
- 18:35Speaker 2: we worked with these kids through the year, whether it
- 18:38Speaker 2: was anti bullying, whether it was understanding what hope is,
- 18:43Speaker 2: being a better person, listening better, whatever it might be.
- 18:48Speaker 2: We're hoping that these kids are going to carry the
- 18:52Speaker 2: torch and remember these things and exercise what they've learned
- 18:58Speaker 2: in their next chapter.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 5: I what immediately comes to mind is is hope. And
- 19:08Speaker 5: for us, hope stands for hold on possibilities exist, and
- 19:12Speaker 5: we don't. You don't know what that's going to look like.
- 19:15Speaker 5: You know, you're graduating college, you don't know what the
- 19:20Speaker 5: job's going to be. And if you if you have
- 19:23Speaker 5: a job that you're headed to that you don't know
- 19:26Speaker 5: everything that's going to happen there. And maybe that's not
- 19:29Speaker 5: you know, we don't necessarily have thirty year careers and
- 19:35Speaker 5: in businesses and industries anymore. People move around, So there's
- 19:39Speaker 5: there's possive that message of hold on possibilities exist for
- 19:45Speaker 5: something better and different and engaging for us is one
- 19:51Speaker 5: that we hope students really carry with us with them
- 19:54Speaker 5: as they as they move on through life. And the
- 19:58Speaker 5: second one is that everybody he has superpowers, You have talents,
- 20:02Speaker 5: you have powers that you can tap into that make
- 20:06Speaker 5: you unique. And who you are, and those are the
- 20:09Speaker 5: powers that allow you to step up and be there
- 20:13Speaker 5: for somebody else when they're struggling, and help somebody through
- 20:16Speaker 5: a difficult situation.
- 20:18Speaker 4: And it's really that sense of.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Curiosity and awareness and connecting with other people that we
- 20:27Speaker 5: try to help students build through the circle work as well,
- 20:30Speaker 5: to build.
- 20:30Speaker 4: That sense of community.
- 20:32Speaker 5: So wherever they find themselves, whether it's in a college
- 20:36Speaker 5: door with new people, there's a new community to explore
- 20:41Speaker 5: and get to know people and tap into your superpower
- 20:44Speaker 5: to do that, whether it's just going to the next
- 20:48Speaker 5: grade level, you know, going to middle school. That middle
- 20:52Speaker 5: school transition. I actually think it's harder on parents than
- 20:56Speaker 5: it is on kids. Kids are looking forward to it,
- 20:59Speaker 5: and their parents are seeing their little babies grow up
- 21:03Speaker 5: and take a step away from them when they kind
- 21:06Speaker 5: of go into middle school and want to be with
- 21:08Speaker 5: their friends a little bit more so.
- 21:10Speaker 4: But those possibilities exist too, and parents can hold that
- 21:14Speaker 4: message for themselves as well. Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Powerful stuff there, man, But I want to kind of
- 21:23Speaker 2: take a little bit of a deeper dive on the
- 21:25Speaker 2: subject of hope. I had a friend yesterday who had
- 21:32Speaker 2: some very bad news that came into his life and
- 21:40Speaker 2: he was very upset, discouraged, sad, not really feeling a
- 21:52Speaker 2: massive amount of hope in his life at the time.
- 21:58Speaker 2: And you know, I was thinking when I was speaking
- 22:02Speaker 2: with him about a message that your colleague rick Yarish,
- 22:10Speaker 2: who was burned alive in Iraq from a roadside barm bomb,
- 22:18Speaker 2: covered in diesel fuel, broken leg, literally his whole body
- 22:24Speaker 2: on fire, sixty percent of his skin burned off, years
- 22:31Speaker 2: of rehab, and I mean literally his ears, his fingers
- 22:40Speaker 2: burned off. This guy's not only carrying himself through life
- 22:48Speaker 2: with sixty percent of his body burned, but also an
- 22:52Speaker 2: artificial leg. And his message to me something that is
- 22:59Speaker 2: always resonated with me. I know you've heard the same
- 23:02Speaker 2: thing from rick Is and I was trying to push
- 23:05Speaker 2: this yesterday with my friend that Rick reminds us that
- 23:15Speaker 2: bad things will always always happen to us. But think
- 23:28Speaker 2: of some of these these things in life that happen,
- 23:33Speaker 2: whether there's suddenly or whether we're expecting them to happen.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Maybe someone that's that's dying, maybe something that is we're
- 23:47Speaker 2: in the process of losing losses is very very hard
- 23:52Speaker 2: to process, and sometimes we're never really able to fully
- 23:57Speaker 2: process it. But think of these these events in your
- 24:01Speaker 2: life as opportunities to be on the other side of
- 24:09Speaker 2: them and to look back at them in the rear
- 24:11Speaker 2: view mirror and say, I got through it. I'm still alive.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Man.
- 24:17Speaker 2: It sucked and it's probably going to stay with me forever,
- 24:22Speaker 2: but I have hope in that I will be able
- 24:28Speaker 2: to withstand the next event that presents itself to me.
- 24:39Speaker 2: And I you know, I was trying to push this
- 24:41Speaker 2: yesterday and I don't know if I'm finding the right
- 24:43Speaker 2: words here or not. I think you know what I'm
- 24:45Speaker 2: talking about, though, Winton.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Yeah, And it's you know, as it's that that mindset
- 24:52Speaker 6: that you know, today's today's not great, Today might be awful.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Today is that moment of grief, but it's that mindset
- 25:06Speaker 5: that that's not going to be forever like it is today,
- 25:12Speaker 5: that tomorrow is going to be different, and there's different
- 25:16Speaker 5: possibilities tomorrow than there are today, and we just have
- 25:22Speaker 5: to keep that mindset and to move through. And when
- 25:27Speaker 5: we go through those challenges that we face in life.
- 25:31Speaker 7: The loss, the heartache, the heartbreak, as we move through them,
- 25:37Speaker 7: we grow and we change because we've persevered through that hardship.
- 25:46Speaker 5: And we come out in a different place, and that
- 25:49Speaker 5: different place leads us to different opportunities, and we can't
- 25:54Speaker 5: see those opportunities where we are now because we're not
- 25:59Speaker 5: in that that place. We're not you know, sometimes I
- 26:02Speaker 5: think about it as that you know that I like
- 26:07Speaker 5: being out in nature and hiking, and you know, you
- 26:10Speaker 5: spend the time struggling to hike up the mountain.
- 26:14Speaker 4: And your view changes. You can see things that you
- 26:18Speaker 4: couldn't see when you were down in the valley.
- 26:21Speaker 5: And and that's how that's one of my mindsets for
- 26:26Speaker 5: when I'm going through a struggle is you know, this
- 26:29Speaker 5: is this is climbing up that next hill, that next mountain,
- 26:32Speaker 5: And the one thing I know is when I get there,
- 26:36Speaker 5: the view is going.
- 26:36Speaker 4: To look different.
- 26:38Speaker 5: And that's that hold on possibilities exists, because there's going
- 26:42Speaker 5: to be something different when you when you get to tomorrow.
- 26:47Speaker 4: You might run into It might be as simple as
- 26:49Speaker 4: running into.
- 26:50Speaker 5: A different person in the grocery store that says something
- 26:54Speaker 5: to you and it totally changes.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Something for you. See, you don't know.
- 27:01Speaker 2: I'm real glad you're saying this right now, because I
- 27:05Speaker 2: also know, especially the fact that you're in Indianapolis. Right now,
- 27:09Speaker 2: you're not aware, at least I don't think you are,
- 27:12Speaker 2: that we've had hearing Fremont. We've had a particularly rough
- 27:19Speaker 2: couple of weeks in the news with some real pain
- 27:24Speaker 2: and heartache. We've had several fatalities on our roads, local
- 27:33Speaker 2: people that are well known and well loved. Young girl
- 27:38Speaker 2: twenty six years old crashed her motorcycle. She's no longer
- 27:43Speaker 2: with us. Just recently, a few days later, a father,
- 27:49Speaker 2: two kids, eight years old and two hit head on.
- 27:57Speaker 2: The kids didn't make it. The father did. Yeah, our
- 28:03Speaker 2: you know, And I called the other day. I called
- 28:07Speaker 2: Tom uh to just just tell him, hey, man, we've
- 28:13Speaker 2: got some heavy stuff that we're carrying around here in
- 28:18Speaker 2: central Vermont right now. It is fair to say that
- 28:27Speaker 2: many Vermonters who are grieving right now aren't feeling a
- 28:37Speaker 2: huge amount of positivity and hope right now. M Sometimes
- 28:47Speaker 2: we just have to say this sucks, and it will
- 28:56Speaker 2: always suck. It will never this will never turn into
- 29:00Speaker 2: anything positive. We can have fundraisers, we can begin scholarships,
- 29:13Speaker 2: we can create annual events around some of these horrible
- 29:18Speaker 2: things that have happened, and we have in the past,
- 29:25Speaker 2: but it's okay to say, you know what, We're just
- 29:29Speaker 2: never going to get over this. We need to hold
- 29:32Speaker 2: each other close. We need to rethink the way we
- 29:37Speaker 2: carry about our days. We need to make sure that
- 29:42Speaker 2: we're spending the amount of time that we need to
- 29:45Speaker 2: spend with our family and our friends. We need to
- 29:47Speaker 2: make sure that we end phone calls with I love you,
- 29:54Speaker 2: if you love that person. We need to just stop
- 30:00Speaker 2: and take a deep breath. I mean, I just had
- 30:02Speaker 2: a father in here not too long ago, a couple
- 30:05Speaker 2: of weeks ago. He'll be back in tomorrow. Whose son
- 30:11Speaker 2: sober for six years, six years, everything's going great for him,
- 30:20Speaker 2: has a relapse and overdoses and dies. I mean, you know,
- 30:27Speaker 2: And I was trying. I'm trying to tell tom this
- 30:29Speaker 2: on the phone. I mean, there's there. I'm just gonna
- 30:32Speaker 2: be honest with you. There's a lot of great things
- 30:34Speaker 2: going on. There's a lot of good there's a lot
- 30:37Speaker 2: of great stuff that's happening. I was just talking about
- 30:39Speaker 2: what's happening in Curry Park and our community and and
- 30:43Speaker 2: just getting together and being with one another. But there's
- 30:47Speaker 2: some really really heavy, heavy stuff that's happening right now.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on? Man? I don't know
- 30:55Speaker 2: if the planets are aligned, but it's it's it's almost
- 30:59Speaker 2: like Vermoners are almost afraid to check the news. It's
- 31:07Speaker 2: it's it's like every day or every other day, man.
- 31:11Speaker 2: And I'm listen, you know me winning. I'm not trying
- 31:15Speaker 2: to be a negative Nancy here. I'm not trying to
- 31:21Speaker 2: be a Debbie Downer. I'm just saying, how do we
- 31:26Speaker 2: find the hope that we're going to get through this
- 31:31Speaker 2: and that tomorrow's going to be better?
- 31:33Speaker 4: How do we do that? Well?
- 31:36Speaker 5: I think it's it's finding those moments and for gratitude.
- 31:44Speaker 5: And you know, I think I think back to and
- 31:49Speaker 5: they mentioned Father's Day and I was twenty five when
- 31:53Speaker 5: my dad passed away. You know, so we're you know,
- 31:57Speaker 5: over thirty six years ago, thirty six I don't know,
- 32:03Speaker 5: I can't do my math right now, but over thirty
- 32:05Speaker 5: years ago, and.
- 32:08Speaker 4: I still find those moments. You know, he built the.
- 32:12Speaker 5: House I grew up in, and my allowance growing up
- 32:15Speaker 5: was doing work on the house, whether it was putting
- 32:19Speaker 5: a drop ceiling in or wiring a plug or And
- 32:22Speaker 5: I still find those moments for that gratitude when I'm
- 32:27Speaker 5: doing a project for the skills that he taught me
- 32:30Speaker 5: all those years ago, and all of those people that
- 32:35Speaker 5: have been with us that are no longer with us
- 32:39Speaker 5: have left us those gifts of gratitude, and part of
- 32:44Speaker 5: the way that I get through things is to think
- 32:48Speaker 5: about those moments and.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Cherished those moments.
- 32:54Speaker 5: Of gratitude for the joy they brought us when they
- 32:58Speaker 5: were with us, and that keeps them to some degree
- 33:04Speaker 5: for me anyway with me and helps me move through
- 33:08Speaker 5: the things that I need to move through, because everybody
- 33:13Speaker 5: is struggling with different things. Some are extremely tragic and
- 33:18Speaker 5: the loss of a life one way or another.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Others are are our.
- 33:24Speaker 5: Own challenges and expectations we put on ourselves that we
- 33:32Speaker 5: may or may not be meeting. And it's the way
- 33:35Speaker 5: through is to find those moments of gratitude and positivity.
- 33:41Speaker 4: And express them.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, don't tap the brakes, get right out there
- 33:47Speaker 2: and express them.
- 33:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Brian McKeon has sat on this couch several times right
- 33:53Speaker 2: here next to me, and he is he's a gratitude guy,
- 34:00Speaker 2: practices it by verbalizing it. Every day, goes for a
- 34:06Speaker 2: walk and lists off the things that he's that he's
- 34:09Speaker 2: gracious for in his life, and some of these things,
- 34:12Speaker 2: and we've talked about this, are right in front of
- 34:14Speaker 2: us that we for whatever reason, we're just we're comfortable
- 34:19Speaker 2: with it. It's the norm. We take it for granted.
- 34:21Speaker 2: It's it's uh, you know, just going out to the
- 34:24Speaker 2: garden last night for me, for me barefoot, planting the
- 34:32Speaker 2: rest of the vegetables and water in the garden and
- 34:36Speaker 2: looking up at a beautiful twilight sky while I was
- 34:42Speaker 2: doing this. Little things like that. But we're so clogged
- 34:47Speaker 2: up and fogged up in our minds, preoccupied distracted with
- 34:54Speaker 2: so much in our lives that just really doesn't have
- 34:56Speaker 2: a whole hell of a lot of substance to it.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Went you know what I'm saying.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Yep, Yeah, it's it's those things that you know, we
- 35:07Speaker 5: had a little bit of rain last night. My brother
- 35:10Speaker 5: in law has a nice covered porch and just sitting
- 35:14Speaker 5: out there, you know, I was thinking, this is a
- 35:19Speaker 5: beautiful yeah night, right, you know, the rain's coming down.
- 35:23Speaker 5: I'm thinking, yeah, the flowers are getting water, the grass
- 35:27Speaker 5: is getting what they need, and.
- 35:30Speaker 4: It's just being grateful for those those little things.
- 35:34Speaker 5: You know, that that first zip of coffee in the morning, Yeah,
- 35:38Speaker 5: is an opportunity just to express gratitude for the morning.
- 35:44Speaker 2: In the day, Yeah, just waking up, yep, and beginning
- 35:50Speaker 2: your day. And it may not always begin right and wonderful,
- 35:56Speaker 2: but we've got a day in front of us to
- 35:59Speaker 2: do and to choose however we want to spend it.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I want to great stuff when I want to. I
- 36:09Speaker 2: want to talk about before we close out this morning,
- 36:15Speaker 2: about your thoughts on the art. And I don't know
- 36:23Speaker 2: if that's the right word, or maybe the skill, and
- 36:28Speaker 2: maybe that's not the right word either. I don't know
- 36:33Speaker 2: about listening to others. You and I both have had
- 36:40Speaker 2: conversations about this before that, and you've we both have said,
- 36:46Speaker 2: and you've told me several times that there is a
- 36:49Speaker 2: world of difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is by
- 36:59Speaker 2: a listening is something that is so much beyond that.
- 37:09Speaker 2: It is so hard to listen to others when you've
- 37:14Speaker 2: got your own echo chamber going on in your head.
- 37:19Speaker 2: You know you're right, You know that this is the
- 37:24Speaker 2: way that others should think about this should see it,
- 37:30Speaker 2: and that frankly, if they're not aligned with how you
- 37:35Speaker 2: see it, they're grossly missing the ball. So how is
- 37:43Speaker 2: it possible for us to shut up and listen, truly
- 37:51Speaker 2: listen to what someone else is saying or listening to
- 37:57Speaker 2: their body language.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you know, we talk about behavior as
- 38:03Speaker 5: a form of communication, our bodies language and how we
- 38:09Speaker 5: move and carry ourselves or a form of communication. And
- 38:13Speaker 5: I think really for listening is for me anyway, It's
- 38:19Speaker 5: it's about humility in some ways in that if I
- 38:24Speaker 5: really am listening to somebody else, I'm getting myself out
- 38:28Speaker 5: of the way. Oftentimes, somebody starts talking and we're already
- 38:36Speaker 5: in our head formulating what we want to say, yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 5: and how we want to jump in, or somebody has
- 38:44Speaker 5: is sharing their experience, you know, you're talking about cooking
- 38:50Speaker 5: on the grill and playing catch with your daughter, you know,
- 38:54Speaker 5: And I might be tempted to talk to want to
- 38:57Speaker 5: jump in and share, Oh yeah, I had this great
- 39:00Speaker 5: chick in the other night and we did this and
- 39:01Speaker 5: we did you know. And but if I'm really listening
- 39:05Speaker 5: to you, I'm getting myself out of the way. My
- 39:10Speaker 5: story isn't the one that needs to be important right now.
- 39:14Speaker 5: It's your story. And you know, in our circle practice,
- 39:19Speaker 5: that's that's really the key role of the talking piece
- 39:24Speaker 5: is if you have the talking piece, you get to share,
- 39:27Speaker 5: and if you don't have the talking piece, you need
- 39:29Speaker 5: to be listening. And oftentimes people will cut each other
- 39:34Speaker 5: off to share their side, and they want to share
- 39:37Speaker 5: what they did that's related to that topic or question,
- 39:42Speaker 5: and they're not really letting somebody finish, and they're not
- 39:45Speaker 5: really listening to somebody to understand what they're saying.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Because sometimes people the words people use are not.
- 39:54Speaker 5: Really what they're what they're saying, there's a message that
- 39:58Speaker 5: they're communicating that's on those words, but it's only they
- 40:01Speaker 5: can only get it to that word level at that point,
- 40:05Speaker 5: so that that's really you know, the art of listening
- 40:09Speaker 5: is really kind of for me getting yourself out of
- 40:12Speaker 5: the way and being present with that person in what
- 40:18Speaker 5: they're saying and how they're saying it.
- 40:20Speaker 2: You know what I've realized. I've realized that I'm a
- 40:25Speaker 2: better listener when I'm on the air, significantly better when
- 40:30Speaker 2: I'm on the air, and significantly poor at it when
- 40:38Speaker 2: I'm not on the air. And I need to do
- 40:43Speaker 2: a much better job not just with my wife and
- 40:47Speaker 2: not just with my little girl, but also with my friends.
- 40:51Speaker 2: And you're right. I mean before while they're speaking, you're
- 40:56Speaker 2: you've got your your script. It's it's plugged in and
- 41:00Speaker 2: ready to go in your head.
- 41:01Speaker 4: You know.
- 41:01Speaker 2: We just got to comment here saying hearing is just
- 41:04Speaker 2: acknowledging the words someone says. Listening is to actually understand them. Wow.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Mm hm.
- 41:15Speaker 5: Not an easy thing to do, man, No, And there's
- 41:19Speaker 5: so much to that understanding because it comes with the
- 41:22Speaker 5: person's tone and their body language and everything to that understanding.
- 41:30Speaker 5: Why do you think you're a better listener on the air,
- 41:34Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I think it's because I'm plugged in and I'm live.
- 41:43Speaker 2: H I think I think there's a greater pressure for
- 41:50Speaker 2: me during a live interview like we're having right now,
- 42:00Speaker 2: and and you know, in real life off the air,
- 42:03Speaker 2: which wow, that's a whole another planet. Yeah, there's just
- 42:12Speaker 2: so much that's being said and so much that's happening,
- 42:17Speaker 2: and trying to work out the schedule. What about that
- 42:22Speaker 2: birthday party this week? And we got the Mountaineers game
- 42:24Speaker 2: we're going to also what do we you know, what
- 42:26Speaker 2: are we having for dinner tonight? I mean, it's just
- 42:28Speaker 2: so much that that's difficult to filter through. I don't know. Man.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think another part of listening is that
- 42:44Speaker 5: that connection piece is that when you you know, I
- 42:49Speaker 5: think sometimes people interrupt because they're they're trying to make
- 42:52Speaker 5: that connection and share their story that relates to somebody
- 42:56Speaker 5: else's story so that they can see that they have
- 42:59Speaker 5: a shared story and a shared a shared connection and
- 43:03Speaker 5: a shared Yeah.
- 43:05Speaker 2: But we've all met those We've all met those people
- 43:08Speaker 2: went and that were like, oh, yeah, I did that
- 43:11Speaker 2: all I had the same thing happened to me one
- 43:13Speaker 2: time at band camp. We've all heard that. And and
- 43:18Speaker 2: the one uppers too. That's a whole, another whole, another episode.
- 43:24Speaker 2: We're not going we're not going down that road today whining.
- 43:30Speaker 2: But yeah, man, it's it's it's not easy. And and
- 43:33Speaker 2: Thomas has talked a lot about this before. And you
- 43:40Speaker 2: can see Tom's uh, his eyes in his brain and
- 43:45Speaker 2: what's going on when he's listening. He is very good
- 43:49Speaker 2: at zip in his lip, especially in Circle. But you
- 43:54Speaker 2: can see in his eyes that he's processing and he's
- 43:59Speaker 2: got a millillion and one follow up questions, yeah, and
- 44:06Speaker 2: comments and comments, not just questions, comments.
- 44:09Speaker 5: To He's he's looking for those connections among all of
- 44:15Speaker 5: the people in Circle. In response to the question. And
- 44:19Speaker 5: sometimes they're not obvious. Sometimes they're a little layer deep
- 44:22Speaker 5: and he's unpacking that in his mind as he's listening.
- 44:25Speaker 5: And you know, as as we're talking this morning, and
- 44:29Speaker 5: you know, we're talking about people that have gone through
- 44:32Speaker 5: struggles and are dealing with the loss and and things,
- 44:35Speaker 5: and that's listening to them is important. And you know,
- 44:43Speaker 5: asking a question about you know, what, what are some
- 44:50Speaker 5: of the positive stories that somebody that may not be
- 44:55Speaker 5: with us, What are some of the positive memories with
- 44:57Speaker 5: that person? And really be present with them while they're talking.
- 45:03Speaker 5: It's one of the ways that we kind of take
- 45:06Speaker 5: their hand and help them, help them continue to move
- 45:10Speaker 5: through the grief and the sadness that they're currently in
- 45:15Speaker 5: to see that there are some possibilities that exist.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Wow, right now we are approaching we're over the halfway
- 45:27Speaker 2: point of June. The school years are finishing up. If
- 45:31Speaker 2: they haven't already finished. Sweethearts and Heroes is going to
- 45:36Speaker 2: be very active this summer working with line workers and
- 45:42Speaker 2: different businesses and companies and speaking engagements and so on
- 45:46Speaker 2: and so forth. But what about schools next year? What
- 45:51Speaker 2: about the schools that want to renew their contracts with
- 45:55Speaker 2: you guys. They want you back. By the way, Thank
- 45:58Speaker 2: God for all of the North Country Chevy dealers who
- 46:02Speaker 2: are supporting you guys and making sure that there isn't
- 46:06Speaker 2: a school out there that says we just can't have
- 46:10Speaker 2: Sweethearts and Heroes, we can't afford it, because we've got
- 46:13Speaker 2: all these North Country Chevy dealers working together, pulling together saying,
- 46:18Speaker 2: don't worry about it. We're going to get you there
- 46:21Speaker 2: because it's that important. But what about schools that not
- 46:27Speaker 2: only want to have you back, but also haven't yet
- 46:32Speaker 2: discovered Sweethearts and Heroes and what they can do for
- 46:37Speaker 2: their students for their administration next year. We want to
- 46:41Speaker 2: have you, we're thinking about it. We have some questions.
- 46:45Speaker 2: What do they do right now? When?
- 46:49Speaker 5: So the best way is you go on Sweetheartsanheroes dot
- 46:53Speaker 5: com and there's a contact forum on there, and then
- 46:59Speaker 5: I'll that contact form will come into us and I'll
- 47:03Speaker 5: set up a time to meet via zoom or a
- 47:07Speaker 5: phone call and talk about our programs and services and
- 47:11Speaker 5: we'll figure out what's going to work best for the school.
- 47:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 47:14Speaker 5: We have a range from our presentations to our circle
- 47:17Speaker 5: visits to training students to training staff and circle. We
- 47:22Speaker 5: have our online lessons and resources, so there's a lot
- 47:24Speaker 5: of different ways that we can help support schools and
- 47:29Speaker 5: our calendar we're starting to we're booking for next year.
- 47:34Speaker 5: I'm in the process of confirming right now with a
- 47:37Speaker 5: lot of schools that we talked to in the last
- 47:40Speaker 5: month or so that we got tentative things on the
- 47:43Speaker 5: calendar and they were waiting for school budgets and things
- 47:45Speaker 5: to be approved. So I'm spending a lot of time
- 47:48Speaker 5: now circling back to those schools saying, Okay, are we
- 47:51Speaker 5: a go for this date? Can I make it confirmed
- 47:54Speaker 5: on our calendar? And so we're booking next year right now.
- 47:59Speaker 5: But but he has a question, just wants more information
- 48:04Speaker 5: and whether you're a school, whether you're a business or industry,
- 48:08Speaker 5: because like we've been talking about, we've we do our
- 48:11Speaker 5: circle work with Lineman groups, we do our circle work
- 48:14Speaker 5: with sheriff's offices. Any place that you've got a staff
- 48:20Speaker 5: and a group together, circle. Tom when he ran his restaurant,

- 1:04:57Speaker 2: If there's nothing that's saying that you have to commit
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: to all six weeks, I'm going to put this right
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: in the comments right now. If this is something that
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: can help you, I want you to be able to
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: jump at it right there. Two two three, eighteen seventy
