- 0:13SPEAKER_01: I guess I've been hooking for you.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I guess I've been looking for you.
- 0:24SPEAKER_05: Welcome to Brewing Better Marriages from T South Dakota with Philip and Debbie Sanders.
- 0:29SPEAKER_05: If these podcasts have been a help to you, pass it on to others and let us know with an email and also include any questions you might have on the subjects that we cover.
- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Well, the last two we've had Michael and Jana McMillan with us.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: They're missionaries to Tanzania, but they're also friends of ours from way back.
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: Um let's see, Deb, how old were you then?
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: When I don't know.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: I'd have to figure.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: It's probably been going on 40 years close.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Maybe 30 years.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: Maybe I'm I'm not much past.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: I'm not much past 40.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Rachel was 10 years old and she's oh, it hadn't been quite that long.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: She's 37.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:19SPEAKER_05: Now that we've got that solved, uh, it's so good to have Michael and Janna with us.
- 1:25SPEAKER_05: Michael, welcome.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: Good to be here.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: Janna, welcome.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: And the last two podcasts have just been phenomenal.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: I'd encourage you to download them and listen to some of the fine-tuned things that helped mold their life and get them to where they need to be and where they are with God.
- 1:43SPEAKER_05: But today, since they're missionaries in Tanzania, we're going to be asking some questions.
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: So let me ask you, I I've already given it away, but what are you doing now for God?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Well, sometimes I ask myself that same question.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: What am I doing?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: No, um we we're we are so happy to be doing what we're doing.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Um we have been in Tanzania now for going on five years now, yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: It seems like it's going by so fast, but been there for five years now.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Um we've had the privilege of building four churches out in the Maasai uh area, which is what what would you say the Rift Valley?
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: And uh we Where's Tanzania located?
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: I know it's in Africa, yeah.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Tanzania is on the east, uh would be East Africa.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Uh we always tell everybody it's kind of at the base of the Kilimadral Mountain.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: That's kind of a um a monument, maybe.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And uh we can see the mountain from our house on nice clear days.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: It's is that a volcano?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Uh it was.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's non-active now.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: What nations are are are close to it?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Well, we we border Kenya, that's real close to us.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: So um people come there from all over the world to climb that mountain.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: That's the special thing about it.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And uh there's about five or six different track trails, you might say, or a ways up, and uh there's camps along the ways that uh get to the top and they sum it and head on back down and take pictures.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And I had never I don't know a whole lot about it.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm stuttering about it because I have no desire to climb it.
- 3:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, no, no, no, me either.
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: I've climbed 49 years of marriage, and so I'm happy, okay.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I do know men who climb it and they send me pictures from up at the top, and that's that's good enough for me.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, we've had the privilege of building four churches now, and uh we just felt like uh the very first church that I w went to, um, it was what we call the tree church.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: It's because we were having service under the tree, and we kind of walked around that church that day trying to stay in the shade.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But on the way home, I was on the airplane airplane, and uh the Lord told me he said go back and build them a church.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And uh we don't have enough time to tell the whole story, but uh a couple of miracles.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: The money was provided and we went back and built since then.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Uh the other the other three are just miracles in themselves of how we received the money and went and build them.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So, what is the average cost of building a church over there?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Um we were able to build it for twenty thousand.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Um that's um from rock bottom to the top.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: That's that's the block that's purging in inside and out, cement floor, metal trusses, and sheet metal on the on the roof.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, with uh uh doors, windows, and uh we just turned the key over to the pastor.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: So yeah, praise the Lord.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Well, Jana, you're mighty quiet about all this.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: And we last time on our last podcast, you talked about the struggles that you had with going, especially financially.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: Um and and talk to us a little bit about what and God and what's God done and well um whenever we decided that we were gonna go on this journey, and we went that first year out to try to raise funding, um we went six weeks traveling to raise money.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: And miraculously, um, in that six weeks, the Lord gave, people gave to the Lord over a hundred thousand dollars in six rays.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: It was such a miracle.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Deb, we're leaving next week.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Well, then the miracle in that is that we were skeptic and you know, we didn't know, you know, we had never done itinerating before and was like we felt God leading up, if you've heard the other past podcast, we felt like God was calling us, but was like, okay, God, we know it takes money.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: So that was just like the icing on the cake, you might say.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: He says, you know what, when I call, I can take care of you.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: Yes, we've we've found that to be true.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: If it's God's will, it's God's will.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: We've said that a lot.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: It's like was Michael's mantra for quite a while.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: You know, to us at the time, it felt like a hundred thousand dollars.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: We we had so much, but um it goes fast.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: And so probably a couple years in, there were some days where um we were pretty low and sitting on the mission field saying, Okay, Lord, do you know we're still here?
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You go to the bank and uh it says insufficient funds, so you go back home and say, Well, this is a Bible study and devotion day.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: But but at every turn, really, um we got tickled one day because we were at a kind of a low spot, and a lady in our church sent me a little message, and the whole point of the message was that the the Lord only promised, you know, your daily bread.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: And in the Lord's Prayer, he says, Give us this day our daily bread.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: And the thing said you like for the Lord to give you, you know, at least a weekly loaf, but sometimes it's your daily bread.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: And so a lot of times we'd say, Well, we have our daily bread.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: He's never failed us.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: I posted on um my personal Facebook account just here while back.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not a big fan of all that, but out here uh it's our form of communication and keeping people uh updated on things.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: But uh posted faith is not the absence of doubt, but it is confidence in God even with doubt.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll tell you one thing uh that uh has really helped us and where we have grown is in our faith in the Lord in every area, but especially realizing that you know he handles every single thing.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: You know, we sometimes put them in a box and we oh we'll believe God for our healing, or maybe we'll believe for the for finances, but um since we've been in Africa, it's just been wonderful.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Our our faith has just grown in God in every single way of our life.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: Give us a uh, you know, uh just a little snippet of what goes on, what you do over there, um you know.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um well I just tell everybody it's work, work, work, work, work, um lately um we have been working in the department of our uh building because we're gonna be starting a Christian school in October.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: In January.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, yes, January.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: We're leaving, we'll be back in Africa in October.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: Thank the Lord for helps.
- 9:07SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: But we'll be back in January, and that's when the school's gonna start.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: Um when you say school, yes, is it is it like what we know here is school?
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Um we are starting an accelerated Christian education school, so A C E Christian.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: So will this be in in cooperation with uh the the what we would call public school here?
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: Um would it be separate just it'll be separate, private Christian education.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: Um in Tanzania, everyone pays for their education, even public school, they have to pay to go to school.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: So um it won't be any different for them.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: It'll just be a matter of whether they want Christian education.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: Well, they pay here, it's the indoctrination of their kids, right?
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: That's the payment they make.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Well, uh the we both graduated and went through ACE, so we we believe in the curriculum and we we know that it'll teach the children not only their their their academics, but also the word of God is just filled throughout the pace.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah and that's what we like about it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So they're not only received their education uh on that, but they'll also know what God's Word says.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: What's your language?
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: What's the language they say?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: The language is Swahili.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, Swahili.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Well, because okay, so uh are you two comfortable with that?
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: I hear people in America talking in Swahili all the time.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: It may not be what that's what we have taken some language uh classes, Jana uh more than I have, but um the people there also speak a lot of English, so it's m I say it makes it difficult on us to have uh from forcing us to have to learn it, because if you're in the market or wherever you're at, if you don't understand something, there's always somebody around that can they can help you out.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: I see.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So we've been working really hard lately because um we were running into some red tape, we might say, and just some problems with the the property outside of town.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: But um we we had this little building on the back side of our property, and so uh we we said we we can remodel that building.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: So we've been in remodel.
- 11:34SPEAKER_04: He said we're gonna read that building.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So we've been in remodel mode mode and uh it's it's ready to go.
- 11:42SPEAKER_05: So what is the like the your your uh prices of lumber, et cetera, et cetera, compared to America?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Compared to America, they would pay really are comparable.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Um labor is the part that's really reasonable.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So you can have a man work for about I don't know how to fifty cents a day.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: A day, yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And he'll work from eight to five o'clock at night and work all day.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: But Debbie, you're getting demoted.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: He's sending me, shipping me.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: But as far as material, it's it's real comparable to here because you know they don't everything is imported, so they have to you know they're paying for all of that.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Is it a coastal country?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: There is part of it that is on the coast, yes.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: We are not near the coast?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: We're not near the coast.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: We're near the hot site.
- 12:33SPEAKER_05: How how far inland are you?
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: About eight hours.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, eight to nine hours, yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: Do you land uh when you fly over?
- 12:43SPEAKER_05: Do you land at the airport?
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: Is it coastal right then and you have to drive in?
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: No, it's uh it's only about 30 to 45 minutes from us, but it's it's inland also, yes.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that makes it nice.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: We don't have a long drive after we land there.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: Can you speak a little Swahili on here for us?
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Somebody?
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Jambo.
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: Habadi.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: How about Yaku?
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: And so yes, now tell us what you said.
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: Uh we just said hello, and uh he said, How are you?
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: And I said, Fine, how are you?
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's good.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: Now, your children, you know, uh at this stage in life, uh, where are your children?
- 13:21SPEAKER_05: What are they doing?
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: Um, Glenna, she is a midwife.
- 13:26SPEAKER_04: She lives there in Riverdale, California.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: She has her own business, and um she comes and visits us at least once a year.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: In a couple years, she's come twice.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Janille, she's married.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Her husband's uh a police officer, and they have one grandchild.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: One child, I'm sorry.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: My grandchild, yeah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Your grandchild.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: My grandchild, and one on the way.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, and Wilma is 20, and she has recently taken a place at in Salem, Kentucky.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: At the I know that place Brother Israel Sanders Church.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you do.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: And Mike's 15, and he still travels back and forth with us to Africa.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_05: Hey, Mike.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: Um, in that, uh your children serving the Lord, of course.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: All of them are serving the Lord, yes.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Praise God.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: We're very, very proud of them.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: The Lord's using them.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: My father used to tell me, son, um, the only thing you can take to heaven with you from this earth is your family.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: And so don't sell out for anybody or anything.
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: So do you have a point of contact that somebody's listening to this?
- 14:37SPEAKER_05: If they wanted to get a hold of you, can you can you give us a um, you know, somehow, even if they wanted to send a little funds or something?
- 14:46SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 14:48SPEAKER_05: Come on now, Jana.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: You're the money gal.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: It's archmissions.net.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: And that's our website, and it'll take you there.
- 14:58SPEAKER_04: You can go to a donation box.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: That sounds good.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: Wow, it's been wonderful having you guys, and we're looking forward to they'll be here today and tomorrow.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: Looking forward to that.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Haven't you enjoyed it, Dick?
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: I enjoyed it, yes.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: So many things in common, you know.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: And you sometimes people think, oh, we're the only ones out here, we're all by ourselves.
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: But when you realize all that others go through, it helps you uh to realize, hey, God knows where we're at.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: He knows what we're doing and and what we have need of.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: It's wonderful.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: It's wonderful to see how God has helped you and where he's led you to and what you're doing that is inspirational to us.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: And uh I know it's I'm sure it's inspirational to others also.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, we thank you for tuning in to Brewing Better Marriages.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: We've done some interviews these last few days, and uh uh man, it's been great, it's just been so awesome to have the McMillan's with us.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: And uh Janna, we're glad to see what God's doing with you.
- 16:04SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: That's an inside joke.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: And to hear and to hear what uh your family serving the Lord and going forward.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: So God bless you.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: Thank you, sir.
