- 0:01Speaker 1: No fresh signings in the past twenty four hours, but
- 0:07Speaker 1: we did get some news from the league. It's not
- 0:09Speaker 1: crazy big news, but it's news. The trade deadline this
- 0:13Speaker 1: year will be on August third, Monday, August third, a
- 0:20Speaker 1: little bit later than usual because we have the weekend, Ajane.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We do not want a trade deadline over the weekend,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and I agree with that. That is one of the
- 0:28Speaker 1: biggest days of the year for the FT network.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But what happened when it used to just fall on
- 0:34Speaker 2: July thirty first and it fell on a weekend? Did
- 0:36Speaker 2: anybody care or did we just not care then?
- 0:40Speaker 1: We didn't care then? And now we are smarter as
- 0:43Speaker 1: a sport?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Got it? Got it?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Are we?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Though? We're smarter as human species and we're smarter as
- 0:50Speaker 2: baseball people or slowly.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Maybe not, I retract my statement. We're smarter about some
- 0:56Speaker 1: things and we are definitely dumber about other things. True
- 1:01Speaker 1: as a sport.
- 1:04Speaker 2: True. Anyways, it's good, Listen. That means that I don't
- 1:07Speaker 2: have to work an extra day in order to cover
- 1:09Speaker 2: the trade deadline, because I'll already be on unless it's
- 1:11Speaker 2: a Friday, then I won't be on. So no, it's Monday,
- 1:15Speaker 2: Oh perfect, Monday, so we don't think.
- 1:16Speaker 1: They would do it Friday. I think it's got to
- 1:18Speaker 1: be a Monday through a Thursday, and that's how they
- 1:20Speaker 1: always adjust it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Oh because August third second verse Jube July. Yeah, okay,
- 1:26Speaker 2: I get it. I'm down with that. You know what,
- 1:28Speaker 2: I'm down with this. I'm down with this as long
- 1:30Speaker 2: as they don't put a trade deadline in the off
- 1:31Speaker 2: season or as signing deadline the off season. I'm good
- 1:33Speaker 2: with the moving trade deadline the season.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I think message sent on that one. There will not
- 1:39Speaker 1: be any movement on that front anytime soon. So you're safe.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Let's charge charge. Dylan Hernandez, friend of the show, works
- 1:51Speaker 1: for the California Post, which is a new publication, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: he did an exclusive sit down with manager Dave Roberts.
- 1:59Speaker 1: One of the notable sound bites doc said that Roki
- 2:03Speaker 1: Sazaki will have to develop a third pitch to be
- 2:06Speaker 1: an effective starting pitcher, and then the article talks about
- 2:10Speaker 1: the twenty four year old starter turned closer turned back
- 2:14Speaker 1: starter who will once again show up to camp as
- 2:17Speaker 1: one of the team's great mysteries. Heyj what do you
- 2:20Speaker 1: think about Roki Sazaki trying to figure out a third
- 2:23Speaker 1: pitch at twenty four years old, and the backup plan
- 2:26Speaker 1: that he could be a very effective reliever if it
- 2:29Speaker 1: doesn't work out.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It's only if only a show talked about this when
- 2:33Speaker 2: they first signed him, thinking, Man, I wonder how he's
- 2:36Speaker 2: gonna be, how he's gonna be since he only throws
- 2:39Speaker 2: a fastball on a split, and when he throws as
- 2:41Speaker 2: fastball and split, they're not strikes a lot. If only
- 2:43Speaker 2: we had know of a show that had mentioned this,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and now he needs a slider break involved hmm. Strange
- 2:50Speaker 2: good though that he worked out as a closer, because
- 2:53Speaker 2: now that they have Edwin Diaz, they can't use him
- 2:55Speaker 2: as a closer and Tanner, Scott and everybody else at
- 2:57Speaker 2: the back ano their bullpen. So we'll see what happens. Well,
- 3:00Speaker 2: let's not forget he was hurt most of last year
- 3:02Speaker 2: and he was in Triple A for most of the
- 3:03Speaker 2: year until the end, so they have options. But this
- 3:07Speaker 2: is maybe why teams No, I'm just kidding. Every team
- 3:09Speaker 2: wanted this guy, so it wasn't that they just I
- 3:12Speaker 2: don't know, I don't know. It's an interesting comment from
- 3:14Speaker 2: Dave Roberts's close to spring training.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's definitely a good reason for
- 3:19Speaker 3: exactly what I said last year. This guy will spend
- 3:22Speaker 3: some time in Triple A. What are you gonna spend
- 3:24Speaker 3: time in Triple A doing figuring out another pitch. It's
- 3:28Speaker 3: okay that Roki Sasaki, who every team wanted, can learn things.
- 3:33Speaker 3: You can learn things at twenty four years old. Now
- 3:36Speaker 3: can he figure out how to throw a slider that
- 3:39Speaker 3: isn't a below average spin, below average horizontal break like
- 3:44Speaker 3: the ones he was throwing this year? Yeah, obviously, does
- 3:47Speaker 3: it need to be a elite slider?
- 3:50Speaker 2: No?
- 3:51Speaker 3: And this is one of the things that when you
- 3:53Speaker 3: talk about analytics and you talk about game plans nowadays,
- 3:57Speaker 3: how they build them.
- 3:59Speaker 2: What is his best pitch?
- 4:01Speaker 3: It's the split fork ghost fork not ghost fork, but
- 4:04Speaker 3: the fork ball thing. I mean, it's ridiculous. It's essentially
- 4:07Speaker 3: a knuckleball. It wasn't enough, it wasn't enough strikes for
- 4:11Speaker 3: him to have consistent success in the big leagues. I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 3: throws one hundred miles an hour. But then again, so
- 4:17Speaker 3: does everybody else. So to me, the slider doesn't need
- 4:20Speaker 3: to be this elite wipeout slider. It just needs to
- 4:24Speaker 3: be something that goes off of this plane, it's all
- 4:28Speaker 3: up and down for him. And if you take away
- 4:31Speaker 3: the fact that hitters don't need to look east and west,
- 4:35Speaker 3: it makes your job as a hitter so much better.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You just have to stay back through the middle. If
- 4:40Speaker 3: it goes east and west too, like a slider would
- 4:42Speaker 3: or some type of sinker which I don't think you
- 4:44Speaker 3: would throw, it would be it would It would add
- 4:48Speaker 3: to his arsenal. But it's okay. Like this team has
- 4:51Speaker 3: a lot of starters. If he goes to Triple A
- 4:53Speaker 3: and works this out and figures it out and builds
- 4:55Speaker 3: his innings up to make him a starter, that can
- 4:58Speaker 3: be depth for them.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'll say it again, he's only twenty four, so he
- 5:03Speaker 1: could develop that slider or maybe even the.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Notes you make Scott, what's he making this year?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Not much? I mean the league minimum with the signing
- 5:12Speaker 1: bonus that he has, but league minimum in terms of
- 5:15Speaker 1: his MLB salary.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So guess what guys go to Triple A
- 5:21Speaker 2: all the time that were making league minimum, right, Kratzy,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I know you did it. I know I did it.
- 5:26Speaker 2: When I was making league minimum, I went down to
- 5:28Speaker 2: Triple A and had to figure some things out, But
- 5:30Speaker 2: it's not a knock on him. It's a learning process
- 5:33Speaker 2: and figure out a Listen, how many I know, I know, Kratzy,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you play with some guys that couldn't figure out Why
- 5:39Speaker 2: do you think we have the kick change now? Because
- 5:41Speaker 2: guys can't supernate or pronate or whatever they need right,
- 5:46Speaker 2: So now we have all these different pitches to try
- 5:48Speaker 2: to help guys figure it out. Maybe he doesn't whatever
- 5:51Speaker 2: this one is, whatever, the breaking ball one is that pronate,
- 5:54Speaker 2: supernate whatever that one is, right, and he goes down
- 5:56Speaker 2: there and they figure out some special gyro ball that
- 5:59Speaker 2: dice case. I don't know, but yes, he definitely needs
- 6:01Speaker 2: a third pitch if he's going to be a starter.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I don't think it's I don't think it's as far.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I don't think it's just far.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Away as like, oh man, he just doesn't have a
- 6:09Speaker 2: third pitch. He threw sliders last year. No he did.
- 6:12Speaker 3: But when you have a pitch and you're trying to
- 6:16Speaker 3: get a guy through an outing, the best of catchers
- 6:20Speaker 3: are so it's so tough to be like, hey, I'll
- 6:23Speaker 3: start working that slider in. Anybody can do it in
- 6:26Speaker 3: spring training, but when it comes time to like win games.
- 6:29Speaker 3: You're like, what am I gonna go with? Oh, he
- 6:31Speaker 3: throws a knuckleball at eighty nine miles an hour. I'll
- 6:34Speaker 3: throw that pitch. That splitter is it is a devastating pitch.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I remember, I remember Joe Carrigan was our pitching coach
- 6:42Speaker 3: and Vladimir Guerrero Junior, I mean, Vladimir.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Guerrero was coming up.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And Jackson, Steve Jackson was our pitcher, and he threw
- 6:51Speaker 3: a splitter. He came out to the mountain and he goes,
- 6:55Speaker 3: he goes, I want you to throw nine straight splitters.
- 7:00Speaker 3: The only pitch I want you to throw. That is
- 7:01Speaker 3: the best pitch, and you can throw against him, throw
- 7:03Speaker 3: it the whole time. So there's sometimes when pitching coaches
- 7:07Speaker 3: and catchers are like, well, this is the one. Okay,
- 7:10Speaker 3: it didn't work, this is the one, this is the one.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Before you know it, he's thrown ninety three pitches and
- 7:14Speaker 3: he's thrown three sliders the whole game. That's not how
- 7:17Speaker 3: you develop it. You develop it by throwing it, mixing
- 7:20Speaker 3: it in, working on it in your side sessions, all
- 7:24Speaker 3: that stuff. If you're looking to get your food routine

- 8:29Speaker 1: by the way, does have the kind of movement where
- 8:32Speaker 1: you could almost call it two pitches. I know you
- 8:34Speaker 1: still need a third pitch, but it's special, right, didn't didn't.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Remember last year?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Left?
- 8:40Speaker 2: Remember last year though when he one of his early starts,
- 8:44Speaker 2: it might have been the first start he had, the
- 8:46Speaker 2: one they had in tow Didn't he start the second
- 8:48Speaker 2: game of the year. Did he starts a Moto and
- 8:50Speaker 2: then Suzaki or yes, I thought, and he's okay, I
- 8:55Speaker 2: did those games, but there were three in the morning,
- 8:56Speaker 2: so I kind of forgot what happened. He threw a slider, remember,
- 9:03Speaker 2: because he wouldn't throw a fastball for a strike, and
- 9:05Speaker 2: he was really struggling with the split and everyone just said,
- 9:08Speaker 2: we're not swinging at that split finger. So he actually
- 9:11Speaker 2: threw some slider. So that's where this is a little
- 9:14Speaker 2: bit confusing to me, because he has the ability to
- 9:17Speaker 2: throw a slider. Maybe they just don't think it's that good.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I don't know. That's weird. That's the one thing, because
- 9:22Speaker 2: I remember distinctly last year when his first start, he
- 9:25Speaker 2: couldn't throw a fastball or a split first strike. So
- 9:28Speaker 2: the one pitch that will Smith called was the slider
- 9:31Speaker 2: because that was the one pitch he could throw over
- 9:33Speaker 2: the plate.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And analytically, yeah, they would they essentially looking at the
- 9:39Speaker 3: charts that I'm looking at. Analytically, his slider is all
- 9:43Speaker 3: blue and when you see blue, it means it's bottom
- 9:46Speaker 3: twenty fifth percentile in the league as far as spin rate,
- 9:50Speaker 3: velocity thrown, perceive, velocity at the plate, horizontal break, all
- 9:57Speaker 3: those things. But he has it. When you're going into
- 10:01Speaker 3: a star, you're saying, okay, well where does this guy's
- 10:03Speaker 3: Where does this guy's pitches match up against the other guy?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Instead of saying or you say, well, I'm just gonna
- 10:09Speaker 3: throw my strengths against this guy, and his strengths are
- 10:14Speaker 3: that fork ball. That yes, Scott, it does move in
- 10:18Speaker 3: either direction. But he to me the starts I watched,
- 10:22Speaker 3: and it wasn't a lot of starts. I might have
- 10:23Speaker 3: watched half it starts.
- 10:25Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 10:26Speaker 3: He wasn't able to control it like some Japanese pitchers
- 10:29Speaker 3: are able to control, like the split, where they're able
- 10:32Speaker 3: to you don't move it, so maybe it cuts a
- 10:34Speaker 3: little bit more, or it breaks to the left, or
- 10:36Speaker 3: it breaks to the right.
- 10:37Speaker 2: His is so deep, so deep, and it's more like
- 10:41Speaker 2: a fork.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It takes a lot of the spin off and so
- 10:45Speaker 3: he gets more action on it, but it's less it's
- 10:49Speaker 3: less controlled. He's not one hundred percent sure which way
- 10:51Speaker 3: it's gone.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Here's some good news. The Dodgers don't need him right now.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Good problem, great the Dogs, But the Dodgers of room baseball,
- 11:05Speaker 2: scot stop it. They need everybody they want all, you
- 11:07Speaker 2: know what, just because they're mad. Now they're going to
- 11:09Speaker 2: go out and sign from er Valdez.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Breaking news, breaking news, and I forgot about it.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, they could definitely afford Zach Callen right now.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they can afford anything. Actually, you'll find out later
- 11:25Speaker 1: in our show. While why it's easier for them to
- 11:28Speaker 1: afford things than some others based on a little revenue
- 11:31Speaker 1: sharing agreement. But I digress. This team has plenty of
- 11:36Speaker 1: starting pitching help. You're heading into a season where arms
- 11:40Speaker 1: should be healthy. I mean, we get guys that drop
- 11:43Speaker 1: during spring training, but there's some depth there. They actually
- 11:47Speaker 1: needed him in the bullpen last year. The problem for
- 11:50Speaker 1: them was the bullpen, and he emerges as this out
- 11:54Speaker 1: of nowhere closer for them and picked up valuable innings
- 11:57Speaker 1: for the Dodgers in their playoff run. During twenty twenty five,
- 12:02Speaker 1: it looks like the bullpen is in better shape. Here's
- 12:04Speaker 1: the starting rotation we're looking at right now. Yamamoto, Snell, Glass,
- 12:07Speaker 1: now Otani Emmachian and Roki's on there. There are others
- 12:12Speaker 1: that can be on there in that sixth slot. And yes,
- 12:16Speaker 1: this is going to be a six man rotation when
- 12:19Speaker 1: you have multiple pitchers from Japan who are used to
- 12:24Speaker 1: that once a week deal. Otani is not going to
- 12:27Speaker 1: pitch more than once a week. I imagine they're going
- 12:30Speaker 1: to try and I don't want to say take it
- 12:32Speaker 1: easy on Yamamoto, but definitely manage his workload throughout the season.
- 12:36Speaker 1: They worked them pretty damn good last October and he's
- 12:39Speaker 1: pitching bull speed in the WBC. And then of course
- 12:43Speaker 1: Roki Sazaki is going to be monitored if he does
- 12:46Speaker 1: end up in the rotation. But aj when you look
- 12:48Speaker 1: at the relief pitching, they should be in much better shape. Also,
- 12:52Speaker 1: that's not even considering that they could get a bounce back.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Tanner Scott might look like himself again. Oh and then
- 12:58Speaker 1: Edwin Diaz is lockdown in the ninth inning.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Now, yeah, I mean he's been pretty good for the
- 13:04Speaker 2: last few years for the old Metropolitans there in New York,
- 13:07Speaker 2: So yeah, they threw him in there. The year before
- 13:09Speaker 2: Tanner Scott was unbelievable. That's why they went out and
- 13:11Speaker 2: got him and Blake Blake Trina. Still there isn't he
- 13:14Speaker 2: last time I checked? And also, uh gosh, what's the
- 13:18Speaker 2: uh Kopek? No Evan Phillips. Evan Phillips, Sorry I was.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I don't know why I was. Couldn't blake his name?
- 13:27Speaker 2: But isn't he coming back to the guy that wouldet
- 13:29Speaker 2: the ball goes this way and then this way? I
- 13:31Speaker 2: mean they've they've they just have so much depth on
- 13:33Speaker 2: this team and if oh yeah, and if they're in trouble,
- 13:35Speaker 2: they can always bounce uh sorry, Uh, Evan Phillips is
- 13:40Speaker 2: bouncing back from Tommy john so he's not there. But
- 13:42Speaker 2: in Kopec's a free agent, so apologies. But they can
- 13:46Speaker 2: always use rookie Sazaki in the bullpen. He proved he
- 13:49Speaker 2: could do it if they need him to. So it's
- 13:50Speaker 2: just another thing that the Dodgers have done where they've
- 13:52Speaker 2: just added so much depth around him. They still had
- 13:54Speaker 2: the left he's in Vessia right, and some of the
- 13:57Speaker 2: other lefties they have going along. So this team's fine.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Pitching wise, they're fine. Remember we went in the last year.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They have too many starters and they needed every one
- 14:04Speaker 2: of them to get through the World Series.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben Casparius is still pretty good out of the
- 14:09Speaker 1: bullpen for them. Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 2: When does Graderole come back?
- 14:14Speaker 1: I don't know. I think he might be ready for
- 14:15Speaker 1: the start of the season, but he's really struggled to
- 14:18Speaker 1: stay on the field, so I don't know how much
- 14:20Speaker 1: you can rely on him. Will Klein can pitch every
- 14:23Speaker 1: day for innings and innings. Right, he was their little.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Hero in that marathon game Bonda. Right.
- 14:32Speaker 1: They have a number of guys that are also going
- 14:33Speaker 1: to come back throughout the season from injury. So who
- 14:38Speaker 1: is it River Ryan, Although I think they'll try to
- 14:42Speaker 1: make him a starter. There are a number of names there.
- 14:45Speaker 1: It is an embarrassment of riches for the Dodgers, and
- 14:48Speaker 1: they are playing a game where they know that. I
- 14:52Speaker 1: don't want to say, you know you're going to make
- 14:54Speaker 1: the playoffs, but it's about as much of a sure
- 14:56Speaker 1: thing for any team as we've seen in a minute.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So that is why we've talked about them from an
- 15:02Speaker 1: over under perspective, and it might not be the smoothest ride,
- 15:07Speaker 1: but they'll make the playoffs, don't. I do think when
- 15:11Speaker 1: you look at the roster it's incredible, but I don't
- 15:14Speaker 1: automatically go, oh, yeah, these guys are going to steam
- 15:16Speaker 1: roll to one hundred and ten wins. I don't think
- 15:17Speaker 1: anybody would be surprised if we're in July or August
- 15:22Speaker 1: in like, hey, who's starting on Tuesday for the Dodgers,
- 15:28Speaker 1: who are they bringing up from the minor leagues? Because
- 15:31Speaker 1: of the fact that there could be injuries that pop up.
- 15:34Speaker 1: The World Series hangover wasn't real for them for the
- 15:36Speaker 1: first time in a quarter century. But I think that
- 15:39Speaker 1: had a lot to do with the fact that they
- 15:40Speaker 1: almost had a different looking starting rotation from the year before.
- 15:45Speaker 1: What was the carryover from the World Series twenty four
- 15:47Speaker 1: to twenty five in terms of guys that were actually
- 15:49Speaker 1: contributing in the World Series. Do you guys remember besides Samamoto?
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, Amamoto, I don't know. I mean who else the
- 15:57Speaker 2: hitters were. A lot of the hitters were the.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Same, right, But I'm looking at arms. Snow wasn't there,
- 16:02Speaker 1: Glass Night wasn't healthy, Otani wasn't pitching, Nook he wasn't.
- 16:08Speaker 3: There, Yamamoto, Vesia didn't throw in the World Series.
- 16:13Speaker 2: It's in the World Series. Remember he had the personal
- 16:14Speaker 2: thing mhm.
- 16:16Speaker 1: But their rotation in twenty five was completely different in
- 16:20Speaker 1: the World Series.
- 16:21Speaker 3: That's why Dave Roberts solidified himself as the best manager
- 16:24Speaker 3: in the game with those back to back not just
- 16:26Speaker 3: because he won, but the fact that they won in
- 16:29Speaker 3: two completely different ways. Saying, how's this team gonna win
- 16:34Speaker 3: with no starting pitching done? How's this team gonna win
- 16:38Speaker 3: with no bullpen done? Like this year, he's gonna be like,
- 16:42Speaker 3: that's why he wants to do the Olympics. He's like,
- 16:44Speaker 3: that's the only thing I haven't won yet. I'm sure
- 16:46Speaker 3: he's won. I'm sure he went and coached in winter
- 16:49Speaker 3: ball somewhere at some point.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Gavin Stone is expected to be ready for spring training.
- 16:57Speaker 1: That's a good arm. There's a lot to like if
- 17:00Speaker 1: you're a Dodger fan. But we'll see. It'll be an
- 17:03Speaker 1: interesting mystery. What does Roki Sazaki do from a development perspective?
- 17:07Speaker 1: The only thing I feel like he and Dodger fans
- 17:11Speaker 1: and the organization should feel comfortable with is that he
- 17:14Speaker 1: is a major league caliber arm and he has proven
- 17:16Speaker 1: himself out of the bullpen at the very least. That's
- 17:19Speaker 1: a pretty good floor. High leverage reliever is his floor.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We expect him to be a top end rotation, solid contributor.
- 17:27Speaker 1: But if not, this guy's going to be special for them.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And like AJ said, he's making the league minimum, so
- 17:33Speaker 1: it's a good little contributor to have on the roster.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 17:37Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 17:39Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Uh, you know, uh, you know, I just got here
- 17:48Speaker 4: and I think that I gotta I gotta CRL have
- 17:51Speaker 4: to share the time with my teammates and you know,
- 17:59Speaker 4: team to about different ideas you know later about everybody coaches,
- 18:05Speaker 4: the organization genera.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And then we can see that's Freddy Braalta a sn
- 18:11Speaker 1: why with that footage that was his intro virtual presser
- 18:15Speaker 1: and they asked him about an extension and he said TVD,
- 18:19Speaker 1: Fredday's a happy, go lucky guy. He's done the extension
- 18:21Speaker 1: thing before. I think if he shows up to camp,
- 18:23Speaker 1: has a good time, they could start to have some conversations.
- 18:27Speaker 1: The other part of the Mets conversation that we learned
- 18:29Speaker 1: this week was a good interview with Joel Sherman and
- 18:31Speaker 1: John Hayman talking to Carlos Mendoza, manager of the Mets.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Mendy was on our show the other day and we
- 18:36Speaker 1: talked about some of this stuff too. But Mendy believes
- 18:38Speaker 1: the biggest issue with the Mets club ass last season
- 18:40Speaker 1: was that they were too quote corporate and didn't celebrate
- 18:43Speaker 1: each other enough. I'm going to start with Krats here
- 18:46Speaker 1: because Kratz, you thought that they had too many gimmicks
- 18:51Speaker 1: two years ago. I actually think they didn't have enough
- 18:53Speaker 1: gimmicks this past season. A little fun, keep things loose, right,
- 18:57Speaker 1: People don't all see the same thing. They're not all
- 19:00Speaker 1: on the same page about anything in life. On the
- 19:03Speaker 1: baseball field, right, I think it's fun to have some
- 19:06Speaker 1: natural distractions. Maybe they were missing Hose.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Glacias, Grimace, Grimis Primis Grimis.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Grimace, Jseglacias, the playoff, Pumpkin the like.
- 19:19Speaker 2: They had a lot of gimmicks.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And to say you're corporate, I've been on I've been
- 19:24Speaker 3: on teams that have been too corporate, too much like
- 19:28Speaker 3: that veteran. Hey, you know what it's all about my routine,
- 19:31Speaker 3: It's all about this. Some of the best teams you
- 19:35Speaker 3: play on, you have some young dudes that are like, Wow,
- 19:39Speaker 3: he's going.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Out right now.
- 19:40Speaker 3: And then we're going out and we're playing a one
- 19:42Speaker 3: o'clock game tomorrow and he's hitting two dangers like running
- 19:46Speaker 3: around the outfield, like there's there's a level of there's
- 19:50Speaker 3: a level of immaturity that is needed. With maturity and
- 19:55Speaker 3: game gamerness, gamesmanship, whatever it is, it all comes down
- 20:00Speaker 3: onto winning and losing. Nobody was said they were corporate
- 20:03Speaker 3: had they just beaten the Reds out and made the
- 20:05Speaker 3: playoffs by one game instead of missing it by one game,
- 20:10Speaker 3: like it's it's very It's like we're people saying this
- 20:15Speaker 3: stuff during the season last year and for Mandy to
- 20:18Speaker 3: come out and say this, that's awesome. Mendy's got a
- 20:21Speaker 3: good pulse on this type of thing. And I think
- 20:24Speaker 3: if he can say, hey, guys, like loosen up a
- 20:26Speaker 3: little bit. I get it, we're in the big Apple,
- 20:28Speaker 3: but loosen up, like, let's make sure we are. We're
- 20:34Speaker 3: there for the boys, like no better view of how
- 20:37Speaker 3: much the Mets in twenty twenty four we're there for
- 20:40Speaker 3: each other. When you see the rotation, all the rotation, guys,
- 20:44Speaker 3: somebody's starting and you know they have the numbers painted
- 20:48Speaker 3: on their face. Would some people say like me, would
- 20:50Speaker 3: some people say that's a gimmick. Yeah, But it's also
- 20:54Speaker 3: a show of hey, you know what, we're supporting our guys.
- 20:56Speaker 3: We are here for everybody. Did you see that last ye? Now,
- 21:01Speaker 3: because the Mets didn't make the playoffs, that's why he
- 21:02Speaker 3: didn't see it.
- 21:03Speaker 2: You didn't.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I'm sure they had stuff they were doing, but they
- 21:06Speaker 3: were making this magical run in twenty four and everybody's like, wow, wow,
- 21:10Speaker 3: they beat the Phillies. Oh man, now look at them.
- 21:13Speaker 3: They're drawing on their faces so many stories. They stop
- 21:17Speaker 3: doing stories when you don't make the playoffs. So I
- 21:19Speaker 3: think part of it is that. But they clearly wanted
- 21:21Speaker 3: to change it because they've done a lot of changing
- 21:24Speaker 3: of this roster construction. In an area that I didn't
- 21:27Speaker 3: think they needed to change was the offense.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Gimmicks have to be skits have to be made organically,
- 21:38Speaker 2: though you can't force it right, So you got it,
- 21:40Speaker 2: they got They have to be organic in the clubhouse,
- 21:42Speaker 2: they have to be organic in the dugout. You can't
- 21:44Speaker 2: say going into a year, we're gonna do this. You
- 21:47Speaker 2: see what happens. Something happens either early in the year
- 21:49Speaker 2: or in spring training that everybody gets on board with
- 21:53Speaker 2: and they say that's gonna be our skit, or someone
- 21:55Speaker 2: makes a T shirt or someone does something dumb that's
- 21:58Speaker 2: not offensive to anybody, and then the team rolls with
- 22:01Speaker 2: it and they stick with it, and you know what,
- 22:03Speaker 2: if that doesn't work, then they go to something else,
- 22:05Speaker 2: and if that thing doesn't work, they go to something else.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And as soon as they find that thing and they
- 22:09Speaker 2: stick with it, and then the fans find out about it,
- 22:11Speaker 2: usually later after it's already been a thing for a while,
- 22:14Speaker 2: and it happens. How many teams are you on crats
- 22:18Speaker 2: where things happened Fans media never even found out about
- 22:22Speaker 2: until later on. And it was a thing in the
- 22:24Speaker 2: clubhouse forever. That was That was what was great. There
- 22:27Speaker 2: was inside jokes and things. I remember we were, you know,
- 22:31Speaker 2: I would be on a team and Paul can Erico
- 22:34Speaker 2: and Burley and some of the guys who had been
- 22:36Speaker 2: around for the White Sox. We would say stuff in
- 22:37Speaker 2: the paper and nobody understood, but we understood what we
- 22:40Speaker 2: were kind of saying. It was a joke, and we
- 22:41Speaker 2: would be like, oh, who can we get to actually
- 22:44Speaker 2: report what we said and put this line in the paper? Right.
- 22:46Speaker 2: It was just stuff like that, but it wasn't offensive.
- 22:49Speaker 2: It was nothing we would just do it. And that's
- 22:51Speaker 2: what makes a team great, and that's what makes guys
- 22:52Speaker 2: have fun and get through eight months together.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And twenty fifteen, when the Royals won the World Series
- 23:00Speaker 3: the beginning of the year, if you did an interview,
- 23:03Speaker 3: you had to say because the one song that we
- 23:05Speaker 3: would play it was the.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Seventeen thirty eight. Hey was so hello, you know that.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I don't even know what the name of the song is,
- 23:12Speaker 3: but you had to say the number seventeen and thirty
- 23:15Speaker 3: eight in your interview, Like is that a gimmick or
- 23:20Speaker 3: is that just the boys spending eight to ten hours
- 23:23Speaker 3: a day and then going to hotels and going on
- 23:26Speaker 3: the road together and trying to accomplish a goal. That
- 23:29Speaker 3: kind of stuff comes up. It comes up at the
- 23:32Speaker 3: beginning of beginning of spring training. Somebody shows up with
- 23:36Speaker 3: a brutal outfit, somebody has a story, we're clowning somebody.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Whatever it is, that's how you build that team together.
- 23:43Speaker 3: And so if Mendy said they were too corporate, maybe
- 23:46Speaker 3: they didn't spend enough time connecting, or maybe they just
- 23:49Speaker 3: didn't win as many games as they thought they were
- 23:51Speaker 3: going to, or the team was split because the position
- 23:54Speaker 3: players were like, great, it's the fourth inning and our
- 23:57Speaker 3: starting pitchers out again. We're winning seven to six, and
- 24:01Speaker 3: now we're losing nine to six. Now we're losing nine
- 24:04Speaker 3: to seven. All right, we got to carry this team.
- 24:06Speaker 3: And maybe that's what's split the clubhouse and didn't allow
- 24:09Speaker 3: Grimace or the next OMG or the next playoff Pumpkin
- 24:13Speaker 3: and all that stuff.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Trap Queen Betty Wap disagree. I think they should have
- 24:19Speaker 1: had gimmicks. They had them two years ago and they
- 24:21Speaker 1: actually were terrible.
- 24:22Speaker 2: They probably did have them, we just didn't hear about
- 24:23Speaker 2: them because they weren't. They probably did have them, we
- 24:26Speaker 2: just didn't know about them.
- 24:27Speaker 1: They didn't have them like they did in twenty four.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Well, no, that's because they were riding that emotion. Anyways,
- 24:32Speaker 2: Let's let's move on. Let's because we got some more.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I gotta go, Leo.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Every team's mid eighties, this is the dream, and you
- 24:45Speaker 1: say we don't have parody. Bet MGM. Futures regular season
- 24:48Speaker 1: win total Detroit Tigers eighty four and a half over
- 24:51Speaker 1: under over.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I I'm taking over. I'm going over, you know what.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I'm taking over because they're gonna keep schooable and the
- 24:58Speaker 2: division hasn't gotten any better, so I think they go over.
- 25:02Speaker 1: The White Sox got better, the Twins got worse.
- 25:05Speaker 2: The Guardians didn't do anything, done anything. Royals are a
- 25:10Speaker 2: little better. Yeah, I mean, but the Tiger Tigers, you
- 25:13Speaker 2: know they're gonna say we got Kenley Jansen. I don't know.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I mean, someone has to win this division with eighty
- 25:18Speaker 2: eight wins, and I'm gonna say the Tigers won't blow
- 25:21Speaker 2: a fifteen game lead this year.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yep. They are preparing nicely for the regular season. Crats.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think I just don't see. I
- 25:30Speaker 3: don't see them being a five hundred team. And if
- 25:33Speaker 3: you don't, if you take the under, you have to
- 25:34Speaker 3: be solidified that they are five hundred team. I think
- 25:38Speaker 3: they took an absolute crater job in the second half
- 25:42Speaker 3: and still won eighty seven. So if you're running Arrek
- 25:45Speaker 3: Scoogle out there for all of his thirty two starts,
- 25:49Speaker 3: have a tough time believing you're going to.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Only win eighty four games. So I'm taking you over
- 25:55Speaker 2: for sure.
- 25:56Speaker 1: It's still hard for me to believe that they essentially
- 25:59Speaker 1: did nothing this offseas and then they're not going to
- 26:01Speaker 1: get anything for Schoogle when he leaves, and this is there,
- 26:04Speaker 1: push your chips all in year.
- 26:09Speaker 2: One more starting pitcher, Yeah, one more starter.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Maybe Lucas Giulietto was signing soon to hang out with
- 26:14Speaker 1: his buddy Jack Flaherty. There's plenty of good parts. I'm
- 26:17Speaker 1: not saying I don't like the team or just I
- 26:19Speaker 1: think I talk for many in Detroit when I say
- 26:22Speaker 1: that's it all right. If you want a little more,
- 26:26Speaker 1: an odds boost token for any sport could be yours
- 26:29Speaker 1: on the bet mgm app. Score a bigger payout, apply
- 26:32Speaker 1: that to your wager, and if that wager wins, you
- 26:36Speaker 1: get extra winnings in unrestricted bonus dollars depending on how
- 26:39Speaker 1: much you're putting down. Betmgm dot com or betmgm app.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Gambling problem or concern, callen an hundred gambling. Jack Curry
- 26:54Speaker 1: does that Yes Network show about the offseason. He's great
- 26:57Speaker 1: reporting on the Yankees, and he said there's interest in
- 27:00Speaker 1: the Yankees bringing back Paul Goldschmidt. What do we think
- 27:03Speaker 1: about that fit for the Yankees? Goldie is still really
- 27:08Speaker 1: good against left handed pitching. Do you feel like the Yankees'
- 27:10Speaker 1: roster is starting to become a lot more platoon oriented
- 27:15Speaker 1: old well, old too. That's been a thing for a while.
- 27:18Speaker 1: But do you feel like it's starting to get more
- 27:20Speaker 1: platoonish where they're gonna have I mean they're gonna have
- 27:23Speaker 1: what if Goldie comes back, you might have half the
- 27:28Speaker 1: lineup change depending on the lefty or the righty. Some
- 27:31Speaker 1: teams do that and some teams don't do that at all. Right,
- 27:34Speaker 1: so it felt like the Yankees used to be a
- 27:35Speaker 1: team where it's like mostly the same dudes as long
- 27:38Speaker 1: as they're healthy every day. And now if Goldie came back,
- 27:41Speaker 1: you'd have Goldie. I mean, this is what they did.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I guess towards the end of last season. Med Rosario
- 27:46Speaker 1: is a platoon guy. Ryan McMahon is a platoon guy.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Who are they playing over because McMahon I think they
- 27:55Speaker 3: won his defense in there every day if I'm not mistaken. Obviously,
- 28:00Speaker 3: Kabiero is gonna play short and when Valpi comes back,
- 28:04Speaker 3: they don't have a platoon option. Maybe he won't play
- 28:06Speaker 3: as much, but that's not platoon. Jazz is gonna play
- 28:09Speaker 3: every day, Judge, He's gonna play every day. Grishamans are
- 28:13Speaker 3: they gonna platoon Grisham in center field? And then when
- 28:16Speaker 3: the lefty goes, they're gonna have who played left field?
- 28:22Speaker 3: Veingas you can't hit right handed, yeah, you can't hit
- 28:25Speaker 3: against lefties like he's.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Not catcher Austin Wells. They trade the platoon a little bit,
- 28:29Speaker 2: Ben Rice, they platoon. I mean, that's that's where Goldschmid's
- 28:32Speaker 2: role would be. Was when we face a lefty, we
- 28:34Speaker 2: let you play first. But here's the thing. I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 2: I know Goldie did okay in New York, but he
- 28:40Speaker 2: couldn't even go back to Arizona. We could have that
- 28:42Speaker 2: reunite and it feels so good right in Arizona. Maybe
- 28:46Speaker 2: because who's their first baseman, Peven Smith, he's left handed.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Maybe they could use Goldie there and we could have
- 28:51Speaker 2: the happy feels again for him and the Diamondbacks.
- 28:54Speaker 3: I thought he should be in San Diego. We just
- 28:56Speaker 3: talked to Kevin Acey. I thought Paul Goldschmidt and Sandy
- 29:00Speaker 3: Diego would be would be a better fit than other places.
- 29:06Speaker 3: I'm not saying he's gonna go there. I'm not saying
- 29:08Speaker 3: he wants to go there or they even want him,
- 29:11Speaker 3: but I mean they're given him opportunity. They have a
- 29:15Speaker 3: they have a young they have a young lineup for
- 29:18Speaker 3: the most part that could fill in if they don't
- 29:20Speaker 3: want him to face righties. But I guess I wouldn't
- 29:24Speaker 3: add too much more.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Slow, So you would platoon cronin Worth in Goldie.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would give, I would give.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I would give Goldie all the left handed at bats,
- 29:43Speaker 3: and then cronin Worth still has still I mean, Cronilworth
- 29:47Speaker 3: still has value playing more than just first base.
- 29:51Speaker 1: No, no, no, I know that I'm saying at first base,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you could platoon cron I mean, we'll.
- 29:57Speaker 2: See he's making a song.
- 30:00Speaker 1: No, no, I'm not saying in the full time, but
- 30:02Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 30:03Speaker 2: There's probably Goldie in the platoon.
- 30:05Speaker 1: When Goldie's playing first.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Goldie's gonna want too much money to do unless he
- 30:09Speaker 2: accepts the platoon role. And then you know, because if
- 30:11Speaker 2: you just say, hey, I'm a platoon role, a lot
- 30:13Speaker 2: of times you get some you get less money. And
- 30:15Speaker 2: San Diego didn't have any money. I mean, that's all
- 30:17Speaker 2: they're talked about, right, So would he accept less to
- 30:19Speaker 2: go somewhere? I don't know.
- 30:22Speaker 3: I mean, and we just talked about you darbish giving
- 30:28Speaker 3: back fifteen or sixteen for this year. It hasn't happened yet, right, right,
- 30:33Speaker 3: But I'm saying, I don't care.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Here's my thing about the you, Darvish. We we haven't
- 30:37Speaker 2: even really talked about this. He's just such a good guy.
- 30:40Speaker 2: He's gonna give back forty five million dollars whatever he's out.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I don't know what he's out the last three years
- 30:45Speaker 2: around there, right, he said fifteen. So he's just like, interesting,
- 30:49Speaker 2: I haven't earned it. I'm gonna give back forty five
- 30:51Speaker 2: even though I signed this contract. There's gonna be some
- 30:53Speaker 2: sort of a there's gonna have to be some sort
- 30:55Speaker 2: of a buyout, right, he says, Because first of all,
- 30:58Speaker 2: let me say this too. As much we love the PA,
- 31:01Speaker 2: the PA would not be happy if he said, I'm
- 31:03Speaker 2: just gonna give this back because I'm such a nice guy.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Like the PA would be like, who wha, whoa, whoa whoa. No, no, no, no,
- 31:08Speaker 2: let's get your money. We signed a we signed a contract,
- 31:11Speaker 2: and his agent would be like, hey, man, I get
- 31:13Speaker 2: my cut of that too.
- 31:15Speaker 1: You.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe he is that good of a guy.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, the problem is you're eliminating the essence of
- 31:24Speaker 1: a guaranteed contract. But it's for one player, and if
- 31:26Speaker 1: he doesn't want to play, it's not unprecedented. Gil Mesh
- 31:30Speaker 1: did it. We brought him him the other day. There's
- 31:33Speaker 1: a few other names. There aren't many, but there are
- 31:34Speaker 1: a few other names. Yeah, there might be an internal
- 31:37Speaker 1: battle going on. You darbish might be like, yo, I'm
- 31:39Speaker 1: rich and for me reputation wise and what I believe in.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I don't think that I should be getting paid if
- 31:47Speaker 1: I'm not playing and I want to quit. And then
- 31:50Speaker 1: the other side, which is reps union the whole deal
- 31:53Speaker 1: is like, we don't like that. Ultimately, it comes down
- 31:57Speaker 1: to you. I think he can decide whatever you want. Starvish,
- 31:59Speaker 1: but sounds like they're trying to figure things out behind
- 32:02Speaker 1: the scenes. I don't think it's going to be a
- 32:04Speaker 1: case like Anthony Rendon where they're still paying him the
- 32:07Speaker 1: money out there, just stretching it a little bit with deferrals.
- 32:10Speaker 1: It sounds like there'll be a portion of this deal
- 32:13Speaker 1: that actually just gets mixed because he's not going to play. Right.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Maybe they look at this year and say, hey, you
- 32:19Speaker 1: weren't going to pitch anyway, so we'll take this year,
- 32:21Speaker 1: we'll defer it, and then the year after that, we'll
- 32:23Speaker 1: then get wiped. Something like that could occur. I'm just
- 32:26Speaker 1: throwing scenarios out there. We shall see. Michael Kadier was
- 32:31Speaker 1: another name that was just listed.
- 32:34Speaker 2: By Mark Condempy.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Every situation is different, and that's why ultimately it's up
- 32:40Speaker 3: to you. You get to get to decide. And he's
- 32:45Speaker 3: already done it. It's not unprecedented. He was going through something
- 32:48Speaker 3: in his personal life and he gave back the four
- 32:52Speaker 3: million dollars during that time. Plenty of players don't do that,
- 32:55Speaker 3: so it's it's not unprecedented. While I agree with AJ
- 32:59Speaker 3: it is a crazy precedent that the PA, his agents
- 33:04Speaker 3: and other players do not want to like be up
- 33:07Speaker 3: against that standard.
- 33:08Speaker 2: But ultimately it's up to you.
- 33:12Speaker 1: True as in darbish, not as in darbish.
- 33:17Speaker 3: Back to what the original Hot Corner topic was was
- 33:20Speaker 3: Paul Goldschmid the Yankees.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Cool. I mean, I think it's great again.
- 33:27Speaker 3: We talked about sometimes some guys have earned some leeway
- 33:32Speaker 3: in getting more at bats, and I think if you
- 33:35Speaker 3: think Ben Rice is as good as I think the
- 33:39Speaker 3: Yankees think he is, I'd like to see a few
- 33:42Speaker 3: more left Bill left at bats. I'd like to see
- 33:45Speaker 3: him because of where he's come as a hitter and
- 33:48Speaker 3: as a player, kind of coming out of nowhere, really
- 33:51Speaker 3: establishing himself, changing things when he was in the minor leagues,
- 33:54Speaker 3: to then get his shot in the big leagues. Take
- 33:56Speaker 3: advantage of his shot. To me, give him that challenge,
- 34:02Speaker 3: and you can have a guy who plays every day,
- 34:07Speaker 3: and to me, they could enhance that roster flexibility and
- 34:10Speaker 3: enhance that roster. Yeah, just the way that they can
- 34:15Speaker 3: deploy different guys. He can also catch.
- 34:18Speaker 2: They really liked.
- 34:20Speaker 3: I didn't like the way he moves around behind a dish,
- 34:23Speaker 3: but the organization really likes how he receives. And we'll
- 34:26Speaker 3: see how those receiving numbers actually matter when the ABS
- 34:29Speaker 3: comes in. But there's a value there when a guy
- 34:33Speaker 3: can truly catch in the big leagues once every five days.
- 34:37Speaker 3: But he's also playing first base. So you can give
- 34:39Speaker 3: Austin Wells those days off against lefties if you're not
- 34:43Speaker 3: afraid of letting Ben Rice hit against lefties.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Goldie got one year twelve and a half. Last year.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I think he'd be looking at about half of eight
- 34:57Speaker 1: five to seven.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I mean, Lane Thomas got more than that, and Paul
- 35:04Speaker 3: gold Schmith think Thomas.
- 35:06Speaker 1: We're going to make a Lane Thomas compay half pics
- 35:11Speaker 1: on the age curve.
- 35:13Speaker 3: I not six and a half million, and I think
- 35:15Speaker 3: I think Paul Goldschmid. I'm just saying, based on what
- 35:17Speaker 3: free agency is looking like right now, I think I
- 35:21Speaker 3: think he would get I think he'd project to get more.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I don't. I don't. Actually, I think the projections probably
- 35:29Speaker 1: have Lane Thomas doing more of this season. I'm talking
- 35:33Speaker 1: about what the front offices look at. The age curve
- 35:35Speaker 1: part is such a big deal. Right, Hotley has been
- 35:39Speaker 1: going down in one direction. I guess it's fair, not
- 35:42Speaker 1: in in production against left handed pitching, but career lo
- 35:46Speaker 1: slugin percentage all that. So if you're just wiping him
- 35:48Speaker 1: out and making him a platoon only player, I mean
- 35:50Speaker 1: the differential was large six nineteen ops versus right handed pitching.
- 35:54Speaker 1: That's not good enough for a first baseman or a
- 35:56Speaker 1: DH and he's not doing that for the Yankees. Nine
- 35:59Speaker 1: eighty one against left that's good. But that's a platoon guy, right,
- 36:01Speaker 1: that's a guy that's going to play just against lefties.
