- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: fog bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything, you know. With everybody out trying to
- 0:29Speaker 1: get a big foot, shoot a big foot. A dude
- 0:32Speaker 1: wrote in that he canceled his Guilly suite order and
- 0:35Speaker 1: he includes excludes a photo of the Guilly suit he
- 0:39Speaker 1: was fixing to get next to that famous Patterson film
- 0:46Speaker 1: The big Foot walking by And dude, this Gillies is
- 0:48Speaker 1: a dead ringer. Man, it was a smart move. Another
- 0:53Speaker 1: guy wrote in with a craction about snakes, we're talking
- 0:55Speaker 1: about this special news snake that got discovered from Mexico.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It was like you hear about this peete, just a recap.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So years ago some guys killed a snake and in
- 1:07Speaker 1: its belly was an unknown species of snake. And it
- 1:10Speaker 1: turns out it's its own, not only its own undescribed species,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but it was an undescribed genus um. And I was
- 1:20Speaker 1: pointing out how I was reading about how I had
- 1:21Speaker 1: two packers. Now a snake guy, a snake biologist guy
- 1:25Speaker 1: wrote in, what do they call those fellers? Not herpetologist,
- 1:30Speaker 1: snake biologists, snake feller snake feller snack. I thought you
- 1:34Speaker 1: were asking what I thought you're asking what they called? People?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Are two peckers? No? No, but like, uh, you know
- 1:41Speaker 1: ich theologist right, entomologists, entomologists? What is it snake herpetologists?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Did I say that? Yeah? The first guns on a
- 1:53Speaker 1: roll one role. Anyways, he said, this guy has a sentence,
- 1:57Speaker 1: he says, most podcast he's generalizing, most podcasts that mentioned
- 2:02Speaker 1: snakes have misinformation. For example, all snakes have two packers.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So it wasn't as special. Snake is not as special
- 2:11Speaker 1: as I thought. Did you know that? Be honest, I
- 2:15Speaker 1: did not know that. I didn't know that either, not
- 2:17Speaker 1: prior to read that email. What's the point of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: second one? Yeah, I don't know. Oh it didn't he
- 2:22Speaker 1: say it? This part of that email that I didn't.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I said, No, matter the orientation of the snakes, they're
- 2:30Speaker 1: capable of breeding. I think is the point of the two.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But you know what's good? They can only be oriented
- 2:37Speaker 1: so many ways. I don't So is there snakes? Man?
- 2:41Speaker 1: They got all wrapped up capable from all directions. Like
- 2:44Speaker 1: all the jokes we made about two packers last time
- 2:46Speaker 1: is now less funny. Oh, it's way less funny. Yeah, no,
- 2:50Speaker 1: it's just a normal plus everybody that knows about snakes
- 2:52Speaker 1: or sitting there thinking how stupid to the jokes. Weren't
- 2:54Speaker 1: funny that so nobody's found this species of snake alive,
- 2:57Speaker 1: just dead and this one and here's the thing. The
- 2:59Speaker 1: only they did the genetic work on it and what
- 3:02Speaker 1: it was, I think they found in the seventies, like
- 3:06Speaker 1: they did the work on it forty years later. But
- 3:09Speaker 1: the assumption is still there somewhere. They think it's a
- 3:13Speaker 1: ground dwelling snake that maybe feeds on insects. Guy rode
- 3:17Speaker 1: in from France. He says, bonur, who can do a
- 3:20Speaker 1: good one? Here's good? No, no, I've been there, I've
- 3:25Speaker 1: been there. I feel like caw can do it? Get it,
- 3:28Speaker 1: hit it like a little inflection. That's a beauty and
- 3:33Speaker 1: the beast for him, that's very nice, he writes. And
- 3:36Speaker 1: he says that he likes to hunt. He says, here
- 3:39Speaker 1: here here about uh, we like to hunt thrushes. A thrush,
- 3:44Speaker 1: he says, it's the top of the top to eat. Now,
- 3:46Speaker 1: a robin, your typical red breasted robin is a thrush.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But that's the thing, man, and you have to eat
- 3:52Speaker 1: a lot of songbirds, Like in Italy they hunt a
- 3:55Speaker 1: lot of songbirds. Yeah, but they've also like eradicated many
- 4:00Speaker 1: many species due to their very taste. And I normally
- 4:03Speaker 1: eat the normally eating things. Yeah, and so at some
- 4:05Speaker 1: point they were like, no, no, no, trust me, bro
- 4:09Speaker 1: robbins are delicious. Well, I think they were eating you
- 4:12Speaker 1: know that four and twenty blackbirds, bake them in a
- 4:15Speaker 1: pie peel, and the you know the Egyptians eight little birds.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I mean there's you know, there's evidence of that. So
- 4:23Speaker 1: you're saying they're eating birds, but just because they ran
- 4:26Speaker 1: out of other things to eat, Oh, they definitely did.
- 4:28Speaker 1: They think they were eating at all. Now a lot
- 4:30Speaker 1: of it's gone. They're still eating little birds, and we
- 4:32Speaker 1: just have because like the you know, the we have
- 4:35Speaker 1: rules that made that not the case. But I'm sure
- 4:37Speaker 1: once upon time here here you can eat English sparrows,
- 4:42Speaker 1: which I've eaten because they're non native starlings, which I've
- 4:47Speaker 1: eaten non native in street pigeons. Yeah there, I mean
- 4:54Speaker 1: there are recipes out there for crows too. Yeah, there's
- 4:57Speaker 1: a season on crows. But if you know you read
- 4:59Speaker 1: the guy le Valden's um uh on one. In one
- 5:07Speaker 1: of his books, he touches on growing up in France
- 5:10Speaker 1: and he had this killer childhood growing up in this
- 5:13Speaker 1: old castle in France. But he talks about like the
- 5:16Speaker 1: coaching culture and the hunting culture, and um, you know,
- 5:20Speaker 1: there are a lot of very well known poachers out
- 5:23Speaker 1: there that we're able to kind of hold their heads
- 5:25Speaker 1: high because it was like such a game to go out. Um,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but they would like drag net fields a night for
- 5:34Speaker 1: ground nesting birds. Basically it was like almost like running
- 5:38Speaker 1: a human powder powered singer almost where it's like guy
- 5:43Speaker 1: sits there and then they like pivot around the field
- 5:45Speaker 1: and as these birds flush at night, they're coming up
- 5:48Speaker 1: and into their net and then they just go straight
- 5:50Speaker 1: from there to the markets. And yeah, the scopier talks
- 5:55Speaker 1: a lot about all the birds. He's even got a
- 5:56Speaker 1: big breakdown of all the different little birds songbirds and
- 5:59Speaker 1: stuff off and like what they're good for and what
- 6:01Speaker 1: they're using for. But here, you know, with the migratory
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, and there's songbird protections, which is it's something
- 6:08Speaker 1: that happens here. The final always telling me that down
- 6:12Speaker 1: east North Carolina they used to trot line Robinson, oh
- 6:18Speaker 1: for for eating. M HM. Tell you what. Uh. When
- 6:22Speaker 1: I was growing up, we tried to There's a kid
- 6:25Speaker 1: down the beach from us who his parents called him
- 6:28Speaker 1: j T. And j T one day was trying to
- 6:32Speaker 1: catch Robin and with a baited with a worm baited
- 6:36Speaker 1: hook and uh, that is what we call at the
- 6:39Speaker 1: time is super set. He sat, so he set his
- 6:42Speaker 1: hooked so aggressively that without the friction of the line
- 6:46Speaker 1: passing through the water, that hook came back and snagged
- 6:50Speaker 1: him right in the eyebrow. Because you know, like you said,
- 6:53Speaker 1: the ones underwater, not a lot happens. But on land,
- 6:57Speaker 1: what JT? Did he have a scar? Didn't lose his eyesight?
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'd like to punch that dude and knows, to be
- 7:04Speaker 1: honest with you, not over that. Oh it seems to
- 7:10Speaker 1: be a history. Dude from Germany so speaking of speaking
- 7:16Speaker 1: of fellows from foreign countries. But dude from Germany sends
- 7:20Speaker 1: a big wadman child. Wait, what's that? Is that? Like
- 7:23Speaker 1: a middle finger weightman child child that I feel like
- 7:29Speaker 1: that's way off. It's not w A I D M
- 7:34Speaker 1: A N N s h E I L He says,
- 7:38Speaker 1: a big wadman child. Yeah, they don't Germany, they don't
- 7:43Speaker 1: say Wadman, it would be like vot. I'm not even
- 7:47Speaker 1: gonna try now is embarrassing. But you know, my old man,
- 7:50Speaker 1: having fought in whiskey whiskey too uh in the European theater,
- 7:55Speaker 1: never forgave the Germans. And when he was uh, when
- 8:00Speaker 1: he would point out, when when pressed on this, he
- 8:03Speaker 1: would point out he would he knew how to say
- 8:05Speaker 1: I love you, and all the languages, many languages, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: he'd say it, you know, with he'd put his good
- 8:11Speaker 1: of a shine on each languages and for ursion that
- 8:13Speaker 1: I love you, and how like beautiful would be like.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But in German, he's like, what kind of people can't
- 8:21Speaker 1: even say I love you in a good sounding way. Yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 1: there's no talking about of it. Man. They shot at
- 8:29Speaker 1: him too many times. Uh, this dude from Germany. Uh,
- 8:33Speaker 1: he says, as a former former German infantry officer and
- 8:37Speaker 1: a passionate hunter, he's talking about how we're talking about
- 8:41Speaker 1: his safe handling practices, you know, like using your safety
- 8:45Speaker 1: on your gun and whatnot like that, And he says
- 8:48Speaker 1: it's very surprising to hear American hunters talk about this.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I think a big part of the world is under
- 8:54Speaker 1: the impression that all Americans have a cowboy mentality and
- 8:57Speaker 1: are carrying around cocked and chambered gun all the time.
- 9:02Speaker 1: You did a good job bringing light into the dark
- 9:04Speaker 1: and fighting the prejudice that American hunters are careless. So
- 9:08Speaker 1: big vat did you figure it out? Yeah, it's a
- 9:11Speaker 1: hunting term, originally to congratulate a hunter on his success
- 9:15Speaker 1: in the field. Very appropriate. You're gonna start learn how
- 9:19Speaker 1: to pronounce that. You start using that, I know, hold on, listen,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think they're gonna stay. Oh that's great, it might
- 9:30Speaker 1: come on. Let's keep going. Do you think it would?
- 9:36Speaker 1: Let me see how it said? M Vachman sneel. That's
- 9:42Speaker 1: not even child anyways. Uh is that urban dictionary? I'll
- 9:50Speaker 1: say what it is. It's vets um segueing out of that.
- 9:58Speaker 1: A guy wrote say that, man, it just he's he
- 10:02Speaker 1: he says, it destroys the segue. When you point out that,
- 10:10Speaker 1: he's like, that's not You've made it. Not if you
- 10:13Speaker 1: feel like, hey, watch this segue, He's like, you've just
- 10:15Speaker 1: negated He he equates, and he's trying to put it
- 10:17Speaker 1: in language that I would understand. And he says, let's
- 10:20Speaker 1: say you snuck up within twenty yards of an elk
- 10:23Speaker 1: and then yelled, look how close I am? No iv
- 10:27Speaker 1: himinly disagree with that guy. I feel like if you
- 10:29Speaker 1: say it's a transition, you say it's If you're gonna
- 10:32Speaker 1: make that statement, it makes puts more pressure on it,
- 10:35Speaker 1: so you have to be better. It elevates your game. Oh.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I don't agree with him at all, but I just
- 10:39Speaker 1: want to give it. You know, he's a he's obviously
- 10:44Speaker 1: a smart guy, and I just wanted to let him
- 10:45Speaker 1: know that he's heard. And uh, I get it, but
- 10:50Speaker 1: but it's he has to chake, o, stab and make
- 10:52Speaker 1: convincing me um. And we're trying to have fun around here,
- 10:56Speaker 1: and I think that that Oh, he thinks that there's
- 10:58Speaker 1: fun to be had. He just thinks you should have
- 11:00Speaker 1: a little tally and you can keep tracking. You can
- 11:03Speaker 1: keep track, and then later you can revisit after the
- 11:06Speaker 1: segways have served their purpose of seamlessly without drawing attention
- 11:11Speaker 1: into the transitions. Then later you could be like, did
- 11:13Speaker 1: you notice earlier? Yeah, Or the next episode Michelle could
- 11:17Speaker 1: tally while she's doing technos, and then the next episode
- 11:20Speaker 1: we can say so last week, Steve a whole separate
- 11:28Speaker 1: segue committee that gets to vote on each each who
- 11:31Speaker 1: has a slick of segways from that UM. A couple
- 11:38Speaker 1: of guys wrote in about this thing HB, which is
- 11:42Speaker 1: a bill in Hawaii. You're about this. It would prohibit
- 11:45Speaker 1: you from keeping in Hawaiian prohibit you from keeping a
- 11:49Speaker 1: firearm or AMMO in your hotel room in the whole
- 11:54Speaker 1: damn state, which for a traveling hunter creates a lot
- 11:59Speaker 1: of problems, lot of work for law enforcement, it creates
- 12:03Speaker 1: a lot of problems. I mean, how's that going to
- 12:04Speaker 1: be select individual? It was some exclusion, so I don't
- 12:08Speaker 1: even know how I would deal with that. But I
- 12:10Speaker 1: remember thinking, like some guy he's like fixing the he's
- 12:12Speaker 1: like playing out a crime and he calls his bart
- 12:14Speaker 1: and he's like, ah, I'm not able to do that
- 12:17Speaker 1: crime after all, because this is a reading about how
- 12:19Speaker 1: you can't come on. I went to school here in
- 12:23Speaker 1: Montana at M s U and Bozeman and UH In
- 12:26Speaker 1: the dorms they had a gun locker, and as a
- 12:30Speaker 1: eighteen year old freshman in college, you could walk into
- 12:32Speaker 1: the front lobby of the dorm and hand over your shotgun.
- 12:35Speaker 1: A duck hunted a lot and my freshman year in
- 12:38Speaker 1: college and I remember walking into my dorm and handing
- 12:41Speaker 1: over my twelve gauge over the counter to the resident,
- 12:45Speaker 1: uh you know, whoever was running the show in there,
- 12:48Speaker 1: and they locked it up. I don't know if that's
- 12:49Speaker 1: still a deal at at Montana State. This a resident
- 12:53Speaker 1: of the r A. Yeah, I was handing. I was
- 12:56Speaker 1: handing it over to in a dorm room situation. Correct,
- 13:01Speaker 1: very similar to a hotel though. It's like if you
- 13:03Speaker 1: were ten of a twelve year old, was your babysitter
- 13:07Speaker 1: Like with this thing, It's like, what are they driving
- 13:08Speaker 1: that you supposed to leave it out in your car?
- 13:10Speaker 1: Better to put like if you're trying to drive at
- 13:12Speaker 1: like having it not fall into someone hands. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:16Speaker 1: uh you know. I remember in high school when they
- 13:18Speaker 1: brought in the rule that you couldn't have guns on campus,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and I would run my trap line after school. So
- 13:25Speaker 1: I kept, I kept. I had one of those twenty
- 13:27Speaker 1: gage twenty two over and under did everybody owned? You know?
- 13:31Speaker 1: It was a marlin that little thumb thumb cocker thumb
- 13:35Speaker 1: selector on it. Your barrels and you always mess that
- 13:38Speaker 1: up cock cock jump up or like, you know whatever. Yeah,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I messed that thing was a lot of trouble, but
- 13:46Speaker 1: I loved it. But I remember that rule comes into
- 13:50Speaker 1: place and I go marching down to the principal's office
- 13:53Speaker 1: and talk about what to buying that was gonna put
- 13:54Speaker 1: me into it. He's like, oh, I had don't worry
- 13:56Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, just just like, oh yeah, well you
- 14:02Speaker 1: times changed. Does they explain exactly what they're trying to
- 14:05Speaker 1: um stop? Is it something after the Vegas shooting? Like
- 14:09Speaker 1: there he didn't tell anyone. Yeah, that doesn't make me sense.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They weren't like, oh yeah, bring them all up. I'm
- 14:14Speaker 1: pretty sure you didn't ask the front desk for the commission.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't know what. I don't know what.
- 14:19Speaker 1: It just seems I don't I don't understand it. It
- 14:22Speaker 1: seems like another cluttered law and unecessarily putting people. It
- 14:26Speaker 1: seems like you're putting uh people in a bad position.
- 14:31Speaker 1: UM speak of that. A lot of people, a lot
- 14:34Speaker 1: of people wrote in about just talking about like safe
- 14:37Speaker 1: handling practices in general. Um. One guy who said he
- 14:41Speaker 1: hunts with his in laws. In his in laws h
- 14:46Speaker 1: are almost antagonistic towards uh what he regards like pretty
- 14:52Speaker 1: standard safe practices, and he's got to the point where
- 14:56Speaker 1: he's got to the point where he doesn't even like
- 14:58Speaker 1: to be around him, and he can't bring it up, like, hey,
- 15:00Speaker 1: you know, let's follow some safety protocols here, and you're
- 15:03Speaker 1: like they shoot him down, and uh, he says, yeah, sorry,
- 15:08Speaker 1: it's bad. Makes him uncomfortable. Another guy Rode. He says,
- 15:11Speaker 1: I traveled to West Virginia for the holidays to visit
- 15:14Speaker 1: with my boy's family and hunt with her great uncle.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Now her great uncle is eighty his name is Jack.
- 15:21Speaker 1: This guy, when this eighty year old dude was a
- 15:25Speaker 1: little kid, he was out rabbit hunting with his uncle
- 15:31Speaker 1: and a rabbit runs off and he doesn't get a
- 15:32Speaker 1: crack at it, and the uncle chastises him for having
- 15:36Speaker 1: because if you weren't using the safety, you to have
- 15:38Speaker 1: gotten a shot off. So then he goes from the
- 15:41Speaker 1: nineteen fifties to present day, Uh, refused to use the
- 15:46Speaker 1: safety because of that one getting busted, getting his balls
- 15:50Speaker 1: busted by his uncle all those years ago. Um, then
- 15:57Speaker 1: this uncle, the uncle that chastised the kid for not
- 16:01Speaker 1: getting the shot off at the rabbits, he's using his
- 16:03Speaker 1: safety is out coon hunting and come morning he hasn't returned,
- 16:09Speaker 1: so they send people out to look for him. Search
- 16:11Speaker 1: party goes out in the Grandpa right there, the great uncle,
- 16:16Speaker 1: the eight year old dude named Jack who was chastised
- 16:19Speaker 1: as the boy. He's part of the search party that
- 16:21Speaker 1: goes out to find the uncle who chastised him for
- 16:24Speaker 1: using his safety And sure enough, he's laying there dead,
- 16:27Speaker 1: a bunch of dogs running around. It's coonhounds running around
- 16:29Speaker 1: by his side, and from the way everything was laid out,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it seems as though he might leaned his gun against
- 16:34Speaker 1: a tree and one of the dogs triggered it knocked
- 16:38Speaker 1: it over something. I remember going out the group of guys.
- 16:42Speaker 1: All this is when I was, you know, young, young, um,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and it was one of those situations where, um, you're
- 16:49Speaker 1: kind of setting up. Everybody sets up around a big
- 16:52Speaker 1: canyon mouth that the elk could disappear into, and you're
- 16:58Speaker 1: just kind of posting up waiting for elk to come out,
- 17:01Speaker 1: hopefully on your part of the canyon where you get
- 17:04Speaker 1: posted up as they started coming out to feed at night.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And I'm the youngest guy by at least ten years,
- 17:14Speaker 1: and you know, you're all sitting there and a you know,
- 17:19Speaker 1: relatively smaller, and you're like, it's like, all right, somebody
- 17:23Speaker 1: got something. Get the cuttings and all kind of got
- 17:29Speaker 1: picked up, and and it's like, well, somebody got something.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Somebody got something. And I'm like the young excited kid, like,
- 17:37Speaker 1: well where are you? Where? Where is it? Where is it?
- 17:38Speaker 1: Where is it? And I was like, oh, you know what,
- 17:41Speaker 1: I didn't didn't didn't shoot anything. My gun went off
- 17:47Speaker 1: because you know, I was all set up. I wasn't
- 17:49Speaker 1: even looking at it and uh and grabbed the gun
- 17:55Speaker 1: and the trigger must have snagged and went off, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: I was like, well, deep, have your gun on safe, right,
- 18:01Speaker 1: I was like, kid right out a hunter safety. And
- 18:03Speaker 1: the guy proceeds to tell me in front of everybody
- 18:06Speaker 1: that well, you know, Ryan, when you're in a really
- 18:10Speaker 1: safe situation, it's okay to put around and have a
- 18:13Speaker 1: safety off, and all the other adults are just kind
- 18:16Speaker 1: of like and then like as soon as the group
- 18:20Speaker 1: breaks up, my my buddy Larry grabbing me, was like, hey, Pard,
- 18:25Speaker 1: it's like that guy rounds off all the time. Don't
- 18:30Speaker 1: get in here that guy. I can see the I
- 18:33Speaker 1: can see the not like like our general practice of
- 18:36Speaker 1: not chambering around until things get real gamey. I could
- 18:40Speaker 1: see that some people are like not going to buy
- 18:42Speaker 1: into that. But the idea of the safety issue, I
- 18:46Speaker 1: mean asking for trouble, I mean, how could you How
- 18:51Speaker 1: could someone even make the point, especially with everybody read
- 18:54Speaker 1: jigger in their triggers these days, everything's super hot. I'll
- 18:58Speaker 1: put a key put a guy's land. It's uh see
- 19:00Speaker 1: her a point eight pound trigger. Yeah, really, that's interesting.
- 19:04Speaker 1: We had a backpack come into Stone Glacier for a
- 19:06Speaker 1: warranty situation. That guy was sent it in. He said,
- 19:09Speaker 1: a hunting accident. Uh, please fix this if you can.
- 19:13Speaker 1: And it looked like a dog had chewed up on
- 19:15Speaker 1: his backpack, a lot of a lot of little holes
- 19:17Speaker 1: that kind of looked like, at first glance, looked like
- 19:19Speaker 1: teeth marks. And I called him. I was like, did
- 19:22Speaker 1: your dog get on your backpacks? Pretty normal for dogs
- 19:24Speaker 1: to chew up packs and hca get blood on him?
- 19:27Speaker 1: And yeah, probably number one number one destruction of packs
- 19:31Speaker 1: is but real number one pack warranty absolutely, And my
- 19:36Speaker 1: kids want a dog real bad. I'm gonna tebu backpack.
- 19:41Speaker 1: So I call a guy, I'm like, so what happened,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and I wanted him to fest up. This dog chewed
- 19:46Speaker 1: on his backpack, and he's like, honestly, I saw grouse
- 19:49Speaker 1: hunting with my wife. My wife leaned her twelve gage
- 19:52Speaker 1: against the tree, knocked it over, twelve gage falls over,
- 19:56Speaker 1: goes off peppers my backpack and it just live up
- 20:00Speaker 1: his backpack shattered. The carbon stays inside of it and
- 20:02Speaker 1: just put all these little tiny micro holes all throughout
- 20:05Speaker 1: the framing bag. But that I interpreted as dog bites,
- 20:09Speaker 1: but turns out it was a shotgun. Let's stays like
- 20:12Speaker 1: every I feel like everybody has an accidental discharge story,
- 20:16Speaker 1: whether it involves you or someone you know, Like, that's
- 20:19Speaker 1: not it's not all that uncommon. We were standing in
- 20:23Speaker 1: the Vortex booth a shot show here two days ago,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and they have a scope in one of their you know,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Vortex v I P warranty, Right, Yeah, they have like
- 20:32Speaker 1: if you can find a shard, they'll send you a
- 20:34Speaker 1: new skull. Yeah, And here's this scope and through the
- 20:39Speaker 1: bell of the scope is a bullet hole. No, yes,
- 20:43Speaker 1: And oh my god, what's the story on this. Well,
- 20:46Speaker 1: it turns out a guy had shot his gun. No,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I had taken a Uh. This it got sent in
- 20:54Speaker 1: by um, a retailer right at a gun store owner. UM,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and somebody had come in with a firearm and asked
- 21:03Speaker 1: somebody at the counter to check it out, and and
- 21:07Speaker 1: nobody during the course of this check the sea because
- 21:11Speaker 1: bringing in a loaded firearm into a store and they
- 21:15Speaker 1: put it on the deon and it guy ends up
- 21:18Speaker 1: shooting case full of rifle scopes. See that's where like
- 21:23Speaker 1: with the with the safe handling, that's where the part
- 21:26Speaker 1: comes where like the whole part about muscle control. Yes,
- 21:30Speaker 1: like if there was no question, did nothing accidental what
- 21:36Speaker 1: ever happened, then you wouldn't have the extra layer of
- 21:38Speaker 1: like the reason you don't sweep your muzzle around is
- 21:42Speaker 1: because of the very real possibility that there are ways
- 21:45Speaker 1: in which you could have So it's like never pointed anywhere,
- 21:52Speaker 1: which which is an acknowledgement of you never know. And
- 21:56Speaker 1: then all then the other stuff is all layered over
- 21:59Speaker 1: that with the the mental idea of like where is
- 22:02Speaker 1: it pointing in case the unspeakable. Well, here's something that
- 22:06Speaker 1: came up with me recently, Like if you mount your stone,
- 22:09Speaker 1: glacier has like a rifle mount on their packs. Most
- 22:13Speaker 1: packed companies will make like a little rifle sling and
- 22:15Speaker 1: you mount in your pack. And while that's great, I
- 22:18Speaker 1: feel like I want to know my shoulder because if
- 22:21Speaker 1: it's just on my pack and it's mounted behind my
- 22:23Speaker 1: shoulder and I have no control of the muzzle as
- 22:25Speaker 1: I would if it was slung over my shoulder. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: can bend over to go under a tree, I can
- 22:29Speaker 1: duck down to do this, and if I'm hunting with somebody,
- 22:31Speaker 1: I have no control over my muzzle other than where
- 22:33Speaker 1: my body goes. Yeah, I still like those things, though,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I like it they're comfortable. I was kind of jealous
- 22:39Speaker 1: on a recent hunt of folks that had them. But
- 22:41Speaker 1: then you can see, like when you're crawling through some brush,
- 22:44Speaker 1: you're you're digging around somewhere, like you're you're now wherever
- 22:47Speaker 1: you're your shoulders points where your barrel points. That's a
- 22:51Speaker 1: good point. Lots of dudes rolled recently a gun we're
- 22:59Speaker 1: sighting in and rifles, and a fellows using my rifle
- 23:03Speaker 1: and never used my rifle before, and it had three
- 23:06Speaker 1: position safety. So I was explaining the three position safety.
- 23:09Speaker 1: But this particular one is aftermarket, and so it's not
- 23:13Speaker 1: if you don't have exactly in the middle position. If
- 23:16Speaker 1: it slides a little bit forward out of that position,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's actually live, right, So you've got to be very
- 23:21Speaker 1: careful that if you're gonna use the middle position of
- 23:23Speaker 1: the safety, that it is in that middle position. And
- 23:26Speaker 1: he had been handling the gun and then he came
- 23:29Speaker 1: over to me, and we hadn't started shooting yet, and
- 23:32Speaker 1: I assumed very wrongly that the goal was unloaded, and
- 23:37Speaker 1: so I went we went to I went to explain
- 23:40Speaker 1: to him how it worked within point in a safe direction,
- 23:43Speaker 1: point in the the safe direction, and I flipped it forward
- 23:45Speaker 1: to that to that spot where the gun will go off,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and I said, see, watch this, I touched the trigger.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Were you surprised? I take full responsibility because even though
- 23:57Speaker 1: that person you can say, how you can say, well, no,
- 24:00Speaker 1: that person had every right to have that gloaded. He
- 24:02Speaker 1: was about to sit down at the bench and start
- 24:04Speaker 1: shooting right. Um. I personally I was gonna start messing
- 24:10Speaker 1: out with guns, and I had a loaded one, and
- 24:11Speaker 1: I was going to another person and say, hey, bro,
- 24:14Speaker 1: got one in the chamber here. But it's still up
- 24:17Speaker 1: to the person that touches that trigger. That's we're talking about.
- 24:21Speaker 1: What guys up. You can stand there in front of him,
- 24:23Speaker 1: check it hand to him. He just almost right back
- 24:25Speaker 1: up and checks it on his own. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you're like, dude, I just checked it as I feel
- 24:31Speaker 1: like it. Used to be much better about it, because
- 24:33Speaker 1: if we have young guys, open them up, you know
- 24:35Speaker 1: the show, and then I'd stick my pinky in there
- 24:38Speaker 1: to see if I could feel one, you know, in
- 24:40Speaker 1: case for some reason your eyeball is I'm always fingering
- 24:44Speaker 1: my rifles. That's definitely gonna be this podcast. But I
- 24:51Speaker 1: always I find myself, even hunting situations, when I flipped
- 24:54Speaker 1: the safety off I'm getting ready to shoot something, I'll
- 24:57Speaker 1: say like going hot, even if no one else is there,
- 24:59Speaker 1: I'll going live one hot because I'm just so used to.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Every time that safety flips off and I know that
- 25:03Speaker 1: I'm about to send one down range, I always in
- 25:06Speaker 1: my brain is going hot, going live. Um. I found
- 25:10Speaker 1: myself after somebody shoots something repeatedly, as you know, everybody's
- 25:14Speaker 1: jacked up and excited, just got something, just grilled people
- 25:18Speaker 1: like gun unloaded safety, and then I'll ask you again
- 25:22Speaker 1: two minutes from now that gun is still unloaded because
- 25:25Speaker 1: everybody's all jacked up. Everybody's excited to go get to
- 25:27Speaker 1: the deer or whatever it is. It's remember it's very
- 25:31Speaker 1: easy to racking on the one in and the gun
- 25:33Speaker 1: never gets put on safety. Second, because you're thinking about
- 25:36Speaker 1: a follow up. Yeah, that's a time when I've here,
- 25:39Speaker 1: like just in our circle. Like when you get up
- 25:42Speaker 1: to something and everybody's getting ready to do whatever and
- 25:46Speaker 1: you're gonna start skinning. There's a lot of verbal checks
- 25:49Speaker 1: around a lot of verbal checks around safety. I got
- 25:53Speaker 1: one on that I wasn't hear for this, but I
- 25:55Speaker 1: buddy of mind growing up. You'll remember the night disc
- 25:58Speaker 1: rifle that was out for a time. It had a
- 26:01Speaker 1: it was a muzzle or you put a shotgun primer
- 26:03Speaker 1: in a little orange disk and then that you loaded
- 26:05Speaker 1: that in and then the hammer. But yeah, it was
- 26:08Speaker 1: a disc riightful for a time. And this he was
- 26:11Speaker 1: out with the buddy skinning the deer, gutting the deer
- 26:13Speaker 1: and he was, you know, had its legs played open.
- 26:15Speaker 1: He was in the middle gutting and his buddy was
- 26:17Speaker 1: coming over to check. He just walked up to check
- 26:19Speaker 1: his check the bucks how big it was, and leaned
- 26:22Speaker 1: over and the guy felt the muzzle of the gun
- 26:25Speaker 1: like in his back and his liver, and he turned
- 26:28Speaker 1: he turned around to be like because the guy was
- 26:30Speaker 1: leaning over him to look like this, and had his
- 26:32Speaker 1: had the gun pointed down in his back, he wouldn't
- 26:36Speaker 1: paying attention the hammer drops. He just didn't have a disk,
- 26:40Speaker 1: didn't have a primer in the muzzlo. If he would
- 26:43Speaker 1: have had a primer muzzleloer, the dudeoel have been dead
- 26:45Speaker 1: right there and then heard this, heard the hammer drop,
- 26:47Speaker 1: heard the snap of the hammer and turned around to
- 26:50Speaker 1: see a dude there with a gun pointing into his
- 26:53Speaker 1: liver like point blank range. My my friend and co worker, Law,
- 26:57Speaker 1: he will at Stone Glacier got shot in the guts
- 27:00Speaker 1: when he was a kid by a h a green
- 27:04Speaker 1: horn hunter. Yeah. Law grew up out in the sticks,
- 27:07Speaker 1: out in Wildman and uh, they took a buddy out
- 27:10Speaker 1: and introduced him the hunting. And I don't know if
- 27:12Speaker 1: they were I'm gonna butcher the story if I don't
- 27:14Speaker 1: know if they're hunting rabbits or whatever they were doing,
- 27:16Speaker 1: but I believe it was a small caliber rifle like
- 27:17Speaker 1: a two. And by the end of the horrible story,
- 27:21Speaker 1: Lao had a twenty two bullet in his guts. Really yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 1: shot in the forties, Yeah, with a shotgun, right, someone
- 27:31Speaker 1: shot him to the the foot hunting rabbits. But I've never
- 27:35Speaker 1: even like it's funny because I've never even seen like
- 27:36Speaker 1: a close I mean, I haven't been around even like
- 27:39Speaker 1: a close call. But got to hear about it, man,
- 27:40Speaker 1: it's scary. Keep your stuff, malls of control. That'll solve
- 27:45Speaker 1: all every one of those problems. Yea, every sorry treat
- 27:54Speaker 1: every every it's loaded, every guns loaded. Yeah. Yeah, the
- 27:58Speaker 1: gun club I used to belong to Washington, Dad like
- 28:01Speaker 1: that some major general's principles or whatever. Well, the n
- 28:05Speaker 1: A has a safegun handling wallss. Don't point at anything
- 28:07Speaker 1: you don't always loaded, don't point at anything you don't
- 28:10Speaker 1: intend to shoot, and never put your finger on the
- 28:12Speaker 1: trigger until fire. Safe gun handling hard hard to mess
- 28:16Speaker 1: up with those three rules. It rules out a lot
- 28:19Speaker 1: of They're pretty foul. Everyone followed that we wouldn't be
- 28:22Speaker 1: having the conversation. I got one of those Reming tants
- 28:24Speaker 1: one time. I remember what maker model of the gun
- 28:26Speaker 1: this is, But those Reming tans, when you flipped them
- 28:28Speaker 1: from uh fire or safety to fire when the seven defense.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I was trying to shoot a fox on Kodiak one
- 28:38Speaker 1: day and got lined up on this fox. He's like
- 28:40Speaker 1: two hundred yards away, and I flipped it from safety
- 28:43Speaker 1: to fire and boom going one off and scared because
- 28:48Speaker 1: you had a finger on it. No, I did not
- 28:50Speaker 1: touch the trigger at all. There was it was people
- 28:54Speaker 1: got shot. A lot of people in Montana. There was
- 28:58Speaker 1: a defect and how there was years ago right this is.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Lots of people wrote in about deer crawling. We talked
- 29:13Speaker 1: about a guy that was saying, I watched the deer
- 29:15Speaker 1: crawl on his knees across the power line cut. Our buddy,
- 29:20Speaker 1: Steve Jones is a wild game chef, very good one.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Um Me and Yanni have fed off his cookings. Okay,
- 29:29Speaker 1: hope we'll get to do that again. Good dude, he says. Now,
- 29:33Speaker 1: he says he similar sees three does three antlerless deer
- 29:38Speaker 1: crossed the power cut on his farm, his fellers from Missouri.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Two of them cross normal and yet as normal as
- 29:46Speaker 1: any other deer. The third and largest, when she crossed
- 29:50Speaker 1: the cut, she crouched down and slunk across the cut
- 29:55Speaker 1: without pausing or stopping. Once she got across. She back
- 30:00Speaker 1: up and walked away like any other deer. She was
- 30:03Speaker 1: moving quickly en up. He's like, I'm positive she was
- 30:05Speaker 1: not walking on her knees. As one guy that rolled
- 30:07Speaker 1: in to say he saw a deer walking on his knees.
- 30:11Speaker 1: It was just a deep crouch and it looked extremely
- 30:14Speaker 1: weird and definitely appeared to be an attempt to reduce
- 30:17Speaker 1: her visibility. Another guy rolled it and said another guy
- 30:21Speaker 1: rolling and said he flat out watched a buck crawl
- 30:25Speaker 1: on its knees. They were making a deer drive, and
- 30:30Speaker 1: he's he looks back and his dad's coming through, and
- 30:33Speaker 1: he watched the bucks go down and crawling on his
- 30:36Speaker 1: knees for seventy five yards right in front of him.
- 30:38Speaker 1: No one ever believed him, he says. When he heard
- 30:43Speaker 1: us talk about, he says, he about drove off the road.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I was wondering thinking about this the other day. I
- 30:52Speaker 1: was wondering why the deer crawl? Why would it crawl
- 30:55Speaker 1: across the power line? It's wide open, what do you oh,
- 30:59Speaker 1: there's a lot of brushy power They're typically they're typically brushy.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I was thinking of, like, okay, because all second growths,
- 31:06Speaker 1: all regeneration man, I was just thinking staying keeping little
- 31:09Speaker 1: pro and they know the people our eyes perched up
- 31:11Speaker 1: on power That's one thing I've perched up on. More
- 31:15Speaker 1: shot a lot of turkeys on under Yeah, we got
- 31:19Speaker 1: a turkey this spring. I'm one of those super loud
- 31:21Speaker 1: power lines and killed two out of there where you're
- 31:23Speaker 1: like hun, You're like, you know, you're like trying to
- 31:25Speaker 1: get into the peacefulness. And I was just like nature,
- 31:31Speaker 1: it's electricities. But that's the thing, is like it's one
- 31:35Speaker 1: of those like power cuts, one of those weird things
- 31:37Speaker 1: where typically people are like, oh, yeah, any activity of
- 31:40Speaker 1: man is negative. But if you if you live in
- 31:45Speaker 1: some poor and I grew up in some poor, low grade,
- 31:50Speaker 1: poor ass soil country where the typical like like a
- 31:55Speaker 1: forest they're kind of matured into because sandy soils and
- 32:00Speaker 1: kind of matured into like small white pines and bushy
- 32:05Speaker 1: little scrub oaks like not rich place. But power cuts
- 32:12Speaker 1: we're good edge habitat, man, Yeah, because it created it
- 32:15Speaker 1: created brush, and it created edge habitat because you can
- 32:17Speaker 1: go out in the woods in most places you look
- 32:19Speaker 1: two d yards there's not a lot of cover. So
- 32:22Speaker 1: power cuts like as a fur trapper, you, dude, you
- 32:26Speaker 1: get it as excited about a power cut as he
- 32:28Speaker 1: did a river. Things travel on power cuts. They called
- 32:32Speaker 1: a lot of fox on power cuts because they can
- 32:33Speaker 1: they can hunt the brush and there's usually like a
- 32:36Speaker 1: little road down so it gives like a great game
- 32:38Speaker 1: trail that runs down through the brush and everything would
- 32:41Speaker 1: run upon. Yeah. I know a lot of guys that
- 32:43Speaker 1: are put a tree stand up and see a power cut.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Put a tree stand up. Every yeah, edge habitat, this
- 32:49Speaker 1: is a break, a break and something in a travel corridor. Well,
- 32:52Speaker 1: that dear that was crawling must not a thought. Well
- 32:54Speaker 1: a guy might be in a tree, so you can
- 32:55Speaker 1: see down either way whether I crawl or not. It's
- 32:58Speaker 1: hard to say how much dear thought thought it. But
- 33:00Speaker 1: it isn't not worthy. And I just want to acknowledge,
- 33:02Speaker 1: Like I have a hard time picture it, but I
- 33:04Speaker 1: want to knowledge that. If there's people out there debate
- 33:05Speaker 1: at this point, a little bit of follow up to one, Yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 1: he's gonna explain this one the Ohio a guy shot
- 33:16Speaker 1: a gigantic white tail in Ohio in buck six points?
- 33:28Speaker 1: Is this the world record one? Or that was not?
- 33:31Speaker 1: It was? That was? This is the poacher poetry in Ohio.
- 33:35Speaker 1: It's a little different. And he did a bunch of
- 33:37Speaker 1: crazy stuff, like he had a dough and he like
- 33:39Speaker 1: cut one's deer's head off and tried to like another deer,
- 33:43Speaker 1: and he had all kinds of stuff. He was shady, shady.
- 33:46Speaker 1: It wasn't like he messed up and made a mistake.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It was like he was He killed a buck, saw
- 33:50Speaker 1: a big buck, shot the big buck. Tried to switch
- 33:52Speaker 1: everybody's heads around this weird stuff. It winds up like
- 33:56Speaker 1: a super guilty, super guilty sound, super guilty seamen stuff
- 34:01Speaker 1: and gets a fine. It's dollars Amish guy, that's right.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Everyone likes to point out that the brother's Amish, But me,
- 34:09Speaker 1: come on, if you as a descriptor, if he was Methodist,
- 34:12Speaker 1: would that be a big part of the story. Well,
- 34:14Speaker 1: he probably wearing you know, certain type of clothing. Well,
- 34:17Speaker 1: they said he was unavailable for comment. But I feel
- 34:22Speaker 1: like it's like a little It's like it's not respond
- 34:23Speaker 1: to text me racist because it's not like a racial thing,
- 34:28Speaker 1: but it's like a prejudice. Like people everyone's like Amish man.
- 34:32Speaker 1: The headlines Amish man. It would never be like Baptist man.
- 34:39Speaker 1: What is going going through mountain attacks. You know, they're
- 34:43Speaker 1: the mountain lion attacks and in Washington, UM last year,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and yeah, I'm searching through Google and they're all the
- 34:52Speaker 1: exact same story, but one of the headlines, I feel,
- 34:56Speaker 1: purely in order to make it stand out a little
- 34:58Speaker 1: bit more, is instead of cyclist attacked by mountain lion,
- 35:03Speaker 1: Jewish cyclist. Even getting like it's gotten this bad, the
- 35:12Speaker 1: anti Semite cat. Yeah, I don't get like, like, I
- 35:17Speaker 1: don't know, Amish might be more of a descriptor, like
- 35:20Speaker 1: you could picture what he might look like. I know,
- 35:22Speaker 1: but a little bit I'm like a little bit uncomfortable with. Um,
- 35:27Speaker 1: I'm a little bit uncomfortable with I don't know what
- 35:31Speaker 1: it's playing into. I don't know what it's feeding into. No,
- 35:34Speaker 1: I agree, you're like, but it's a big denomin but
- 35:39Speaker 1: it's like, I don't know, it just makes me like
- 35:41Speaker 1: slightly uncomfortable. I would not be just a poacher, that's true.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Like it's worse. You know, they keep it's a low
- 35:49Speaker 1: profile maybe and maybe they're known to I don't know,
- 35:52Speaker 1: to never do anything. These are the exact sties, right, No,
- 35:57Speaker 1: I know that's what I'm saying. But that's what I'm saying.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Why some one would I would say, well, you wouldn't
- 36:02Speaker 1: believe it. It wasn't just any poacher breaking Sish the
- 36:08Speaker 1: good you know, you know, the parable the good Smaritans. Well, um, dude,
- 36:13Speaker 1: the good Smaritans. Samaritans were known as horrible people. So
- 36:17Speaker 1: people always like, what you're saying is a good bad guy. Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you're saying like these guys are the Smaritans are the
- 36:23Speaker 1: worst of the worst. So yeah, blat of people don't
- 36:26Speaker 1: realize that that's part of it. Like the Smaritans had
- 36:28Speaker 1: a very bad I gather, I don't I hope I'm
- 36:31Speaker 1: not offending any Smaritans out there, had a real bad reputation.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And then so it's like the fact that one turns
- 36:37Speaker 1: out being good, it's real surprising. So when you say,
- 36:40Speaker 1: like an Amish poacher, I don't know if you're saying
- 36:43Speaker 1: like these pillars of virtue or if you're saying it
- 36:47Speaker 1: just goes to show you certain religious people. So we're
- 36:53Speaker 1: talking about notice, so someone just wrote in to explain
- 36:57Speaker 1: how they had come up with the dollar fine, right, yeah,
- 37:00Speaker 1: which is a good story. Yeah, and in and I
- 37:04Speaker 1: try to get ahold of the legal department over at
- 37:07Speaker 1: Ohio Game and Fish. Should it calls you Pete, that's
- 37:11Speaker 1: where you help from. Maybe you just say call Cindy. Um.
- 37:16Speaker 1: But I couldn't get an answer on our They have
- 37:19Speaker 1: a formula on how they figure out, um, how much
- 37:24Speaker 1: to find a person. Understand it's exponential to the size
- 37:30Speaker 1: of the antlers. The formula is gross score minus one d.
- 37:36Speaker 1: That's the part that gets me and finished, yeah, uh
- 37:41Speaker 1: to the second power times a dollar and sixty. So
- 37:47Speaker 1: it's the So this box was a two twenty something.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You act a hundred off and then square that number
- 37:55Speaker 1: and times. I love the sentiment and of sure that
- 38:00Speaker 1: someone could explain it. I don't get the part about
- 38:02Speaker 1: was it like without taking a hundred off and not
- 38:05Speaker 1: being like, man, that's a big fine. How can we
- 38:07Speaker 1: make it less? And so I was like, well, let's
- 38:09Speaker 1: take a hundred off then square was there how they calculated? No,
- 38:17Speaker 1: we're trying to figure out where they where where it
- 38:19Speaker 1: came from, Like where did the dollar sixty five come from?
- 38:21Speaker 1: I'm sure that there is a repeated it's gross score yep,
- 38:26Speaker 1: minus one hundred then square that number squared. So for example,
- 38:35Speaker 1: we know that a two or thirty inch deer. It
- 38:36Speaker 1: gets you about twenty eight thous dollars in trouble. And
- 38:39Speaker 1: actually I did the mask to thirty ended up being
- 38:41Speaker 1: a because there was some add on. Yeah, so let's
- 38:47Speaker 1: just say you're not that lucky of a poacher to
- 38:49Speaker 1: get into two thirty and you just kill a hundred
- 38:52Speaker 1: fifty in and they started in Ohio. That's where they
- 38:56Speaker 1: can That's when trophy starts. Oh so that's when it's
- 38:58Speaker 1: like a different kind of poaching. I like the system, man,
- 39:01Speaker 1: because I think if a dude, if a guy like
- 39:03Speaker 1: shot him, if a guy shots a spike, it's just
- 39:07Speaker 1: I don't know, man, It's like, I don't I'm not
- 39:08Speaker 1: condoning anything, any kind of violation or poacher, but it's
- 39:11Speaker 1: a guy that poaches trophy class stuff, in my mind,
- 39:14Speaker 1: is a different kind of poacher than But I feel
- 39:17Speaker 1: like this might be encouraging folks just shoot the spikes.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Be like, hey, that spikes for us. You know, now
- 39:22Speaker 1: that we've given the formula, it's not that bad. Okay,
- 39:26Speaker 1: we run it out. But he shoots, let's say he
- 39:28Speaker 1: shot you know you came from I think the state
- 39:39Speaker 1: pays you at that point, that's what that's got to be.
- 39:45Speaker 1: What it is, may well know what it is because
- 39:48Speaker 1: the restitution, the trophy restitution doesn't kick in until it
- 39:52Speaker 1: gets to a certain size. This is I mean, the
- 39:56Speaker 1: way this is set up is that animal has been
- 40:00Speaker 1: that belongs to the states, to the people of the state,
- 40:04Speaker 1: has been costing the people of the state money as
- 40:07Speaker 1: it grows, right, and by the time it gets into
- 40:11Speaker 1: a trophy class animal, it has lived much longer and
- 40:15Speaker 1: eaten much more, and it has a greater cultural value.
- 40:18Speaker 1: That's the thought they're trying to recoup the grass the
- 40:20Speaker 1: thing at oh Man, you're saying that we management is expensive. Okay,
- 40:25Speaker 1: got creating a talking about his day to day diet. No,
- 40:30Speaker 1: but I was expensive to the state. I think he's
- 40:33Speaker 1: justify it very it's expensive to the state. It takes
- 40:37Speaker 1: work an effort to have it situation which deer can
- 40:41Speaker 1: become three, four or five years old. It's like it
- 40:43Speaker 1: happens not by accident. Absolutely committed allowing it to happen,
- 40:47Speaker 1: and you just screwed the whole thing up. And there's
- 40:50Speaker 1: a lot of people who are paying real good money
- 40:53Speaker 1: buying licenses and paying least fees and putting out tree stands,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you robbed everybody of that.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Now you're gonna pay? What if you showed it? What
- 41:01Speaker 1: if you shoot a dough it's probably a different So
- 41:03Speaker 1: if you don't get the like trophy restitution. But then
- 41:09Speaker 1: also I think, if I'm hearing you correctly, Steve, you
- 41:12Speaker 1: are also like the odds of a man who is
- 41:15Speaker 1: poaching because he is he or she. I suppose this
- 41:20Speaker 1: poacher is poaching because they're starving to death and them
- 41:23Speaker 1: happening to come up with a two thirty seven inch deer. Yeah,
- 41:30Speaker 1: real lucky, real real unlucky. Yeah. I like, personally, I
- 41:34Speaker 1: see both sides of it. I'd be like, well, it's poaching,
- 41:36Speaker 1: is poaching, it doesn't matter. I see that. I also
- 41:39Speaker 1: see that if you're out trying to poach trophy class animals,
- 41:46Speaker 1: it's just the worst, like all crimes relative. Well, that
- 41:50Speaker 1: it would make sense to me if there's like the
- 41:51Speaker 1: baseline punishments and this is just an extra add on
- 41:54Speaker 1: in case you're in in case that dear is bigger
- 41:56Speaker 1: than or scores bigger than. Yeah, well, the exponential you know,
- 42:03Speaker 1: the squaring really does a lot because the hundred fifty
- 42:05Speaker 1: inch only costs you four thousand. Oh man, Yeah, they
- 42:10Speaker 1: don't want you getting them. Bill Booners know, well, just
- 42:17Speaker 1: even on like the the poacher, because you're starving to death. Example, right,
- 42:21Speaker 1: even if you are poaching for big gas trophy class animals,
- 42:27Speaker 1: likely not going to be your first foray into the
- 42:29Speaker 1: poaching field and you're coming up with a two back. Yeah,
- 42:34Speaker 1: even if you are a dead set on a big
- 42:35Speaker 1: trophy class critter, you've probably got some real poaching under
- 42:40Speaker 1: your belt by the time you come up with one
- 42:41Speaker 1: of those. Yeah, you've actually got good at it. That's
- 42:45Speaker 1: an interesting subject. You Everyone that makes its own gravy too,
- 42:49Speaker 1: there's another poach in case it makes them gravy. You
- 42:52Speaker 1: guys ready for this, you know? For I do that
- 42:58Speaker 1: guy asked hum Ken make hog jerky without getting trick mhm.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I gotta get it up to temp man. When I
- 43:06Speaker 1: got reported, when I did, when I got trick analysis, Uh,
- 43:11Speaker 1: you know, it's a CDC reportable disease. So you had
- 43:14Speaker 1: to go down and they and and I was reported
- 43:17Speaker 1: in King County. And the guy that got it before
- 43:20Speaker 1: me got it two thousand seven. He got it from
- 43:22Speaker 1: Mountain lion jerky. Oh, because if you're not bringing it
- 43:26Speaker 1: up to temp, you're not destroying You're not destroying the ciss.
- 43:31Speaker 1: So if you're making just like if you're taking trick
- 43:33Speaker 1: positive meat or drying it at a hundred degrees good enough,
- 43:42Speaker 1: you're still you. You're still susceptible to getting trick. So
- 43:45Speaker 1: I'm assuming he's talking wild hog jerky. Yeah, you gotta
- 43:50Speaker 1: bring it up. I haven't made a whole lot of
- 43:53Speaker 1: bear jerky, but when I have, we just threw it
- 43:54Speaker 1: in the oven and and and stuck it in the
- 43:58Speaker 1: oven at two for long time, just to get it
- 44:01Speaker 1: up to temperature. No, what do you got to think
- 44:06Speaker 1: about the answer is, yes, you can. He's saying, let me.
- 44:10Speaker 1: He says, can you make hog jerky without getting tricked?
- 44:13Speaker 1: My answer would be, well, that that's a that's I
- 44:17Speaker 1: don't like how it's phrased. Certainly there are plenty of
- 44:23Speaker 1: can you know? If he said can you make hog
- 44:26Speaker 1: jerky and be certain you will not get tricked, then
- 44:29Speaker 1: the answer is no, can you make hog jerky without
- 44:32Speaker 1: getting tricked? I'm sure it's been done. Is that a
- 44:34Speaker 1: good idea? No, it's not a good idea because you
- 44:38Speaker 1: are not killing the Yeah, mostly you're just gonna end
- 44:43Speaker 1: up with a little more overcooked jerky than you'd probably
- 44:46Speaker 1: like to have. Yeah, is not as good as jerky
- 44:51Speaker 1: has been dried. What's the special number we go for
- 44:54Speaker 1: to ki, Yeah, well sixty. I recently had a debate
- 45:02Speaker 1: with someone where they're saying, uh, I was saying, you
- 45:05Speaker 1: gotta cook havelina? Do you know of anybody getting tricked
- 45:09Speaker 1: from Havelina? And I had to acknowledge that, No, I don't.
- 45:13Speaker 1: They they're like omnivorous, they eat all kinds of meat. Yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I've I've actually, man, yeah, I've eaten there has to
- 45:20Speaker 1: be a possibility I mean undercooked. I've meant undercooked Havelena.
- 45:23Speaker 1: I mean like not undercooked, but under one sixty. I'm sure.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I'm sure someone's looking to type that up. Yehnny, that's
- 45:30Speaker 1: a good that's a good point. A trick from it's
- 45:36Speaker 1: been it's been linked to walrus where wild pigs. Why yeah, why,
- 45:42Speaker 1: Like you said, why would not mountain lions carry it?
- 45:44Speaker 1: It's not like it's just a pork thing. No, mountain
- 45:47Speaker 1: lions carry it. All that stuff, even like like weasels, rats, mice,
- 45:53Speaker 1: there's no way that I have Lina, which are going
- 45:55Speaker 1: to eat a dead dog if you let it, that's
- 45:58Speaker 1: exempt from this is not getting it. So there's no
- 46:02Speaker 1: there's no unglance that Carrie, now that I know of. No.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Even though a white tailed deer have now been proven
- 46:08Speaker 1: to eat birds out of their nests, people have seen it.
- 46:11Speaker 1: So you wonder, that's crazy, man, if you got a
- 46:15Speaker 1: deer out and your kids like people a little baby birds,
- 46:19Speaker 1: come on, that's horrible. Tell dude, in Europe, even our
- 46:24Speaker 1: even our deer song birds. Okay, here here's the here's
- 46:29Speaker 1: the here's the poaching case that this is the one
- 46:31Speaker 1: that I think makes it's gravy, makes his own gravy,
- 46:33Speaker 1: and the way it's been covered is annoying. First, okay,
- 46:39Speaker 1: this is a tricky one. This is a tricky one.
- 46:41Speaker 1: So there's some guys in Prince Williams sound um and
- 46:46Speaker 1: they kill a blackbird out it's den and kill some
- 46:53Speaker 1: cobs out of the den. Now, a couple of things
- 46:58Speaker 1: that are interesting. One they this den is under surveillance
- 47:03Speaker 1: by fishing Game for a study. So these guys do
- 47:07Speaker 1: it all on camera. Ah, so there's no doubt about
- 47:14Speaker 1: guilt here to get him on film doing this. They
- 47:18Speaker 1: one thing that's interesting is they kill a black bear
- 47:21Speaker 1: sal and kill some cubs, but then butcher the butcher
- 47:24Speaker 1: the sal for meat and haul off the meat, but
- 47:27Speaker 1: then later decided to come back and get the cups.
- 47:32Speaker 1: These guys get hit with some heavy duty fines ah
- 47:39Speaker 1: dollar fine, jail time, um, and then they lose a
- 47:47Speaker 1: ton of stuff right down to boats, oh, trailers, guns,
- 47:54Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff in this I'm looking at this,
- 47:58Speaker 1: this publication called the Hill, and this is where this
- 48:02Speaker 1: thing starts to make it scrapy. So these guys get
- 48:04Speaker 1: humongous fine and this thing confuses this rule that we've
- 48:09Speaker 1: talked about a ton of times, which everybody keeps reporting
- 48:12Speaker 1: in the most irresponsible way possible. Where in Alaska, there
- 48:18Speaker 1: was recently under the Obama administration, they put some some
- 48:22Speaker 1: game management practice restrictions on refuge lands in Alaska. So
- 48:28Speaker 1: you're talking like of the total land mass of Alaska
- 48:32Speaker 1: is in the refuge system. And the federal government came
- 48:35Speaker 1: in and had some federal overlays of management practices that
- 48:39Speaker 1: could not be used by the state on refuge land.
- 48:43Speaker 1: And it had to do it has to do with
- 48:44Speaker 1: like bear baiting, um with den digging, digging black bears
- 48:50Speaker 1: out of den with artificial light, like they banned it.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Where the state couldn't decide to use management practices on
- 48:57Speaker 1: refuge land. Meanwhile, the state is able to do whatever
- 49:04Speaker 1: management practices they desire on the other eight seven percent
- 49:09Speaker 1: of the state and in most cases do not allow
- 49:12Speaker 1: these managements. They don't allow these management practices. So this
- 49:16Speaker 1: is a funny example where here's a guy hunting, not
- 49:18Speaker 1: on a refuge He kills the baron's den, goes to jail,
- 49:24Speaker 1: gets a massive fine, loses all of his equipment, loses
- 49:28Speaker 1: his boat, loses his guns, can't hunt anymore, right, not
- 49:32Speaker 1: on a refuge land. It's in a place where the
- 49:33Speaker 1: state does not allow the killing of cubs. So this
- 49:39Speaker 1: piece then reports it and they point out like, oh,
- 49:44Speaker 1: they do so little research. They point out that, oh, um,
- 49:48Speaker 1: it used to be uh. They try to make it illegal,
- 49:51Speaker 1: but Alaska won't. It doesn't want to be illegal. It's like, no,
- 49:56Speaker 1: not exactly right. This is Alaska deciding that this place
- 50:01Speaker 1: that's not legal and then prosecuting the piss out of
- 50:03Speaker 1: a guy who breaks the rule. But you keep seeing
- 50:07Speaker 1: this narrative pushed in the news that somehow Alaska wants
- 50:10Speaker 1: to just gloves off, dig every bear in the state
- 50:14Speaker 1: out of its then and kill it, and people will
- 50:16Speaker 1: not no one, no one will report this responsibly and
- 50:21Speaker 1: explaining what it is that they're talking about. They keep
- 50:25Speaker 1: making a big deal about shooting, like, oh, we can
- 50:26Speaker 1: shoot cariboo out of boats. That happens in one game
- 50:29Speaker 1: management unit on the North Slope where people have traditionally
- 50:32Speaker 1: intercepted migrating herds of carib who as they swim across
- 50:34Speaker 1: big rivers. So the whole state you can't. There's a
- 50:40Speaker 1: place that you can where they feel that it's judicious
- 50:45Speaker 1: uh and and conforms of their management policies to do
- 50:48Speaker 1: it there. But no, like, no one will report this
- 50:50Speaker 1: properly makes the headline. There's a lot of details around
- 50:55Speaker 1: that case too. Then that those guys got one a
- 50:57Speaker 1: thirty day There was some jail time involved. It was
- 51:00Speaker 1: thirty day sentence, but it was commuted. Maybe the sons
- 51:02Speaker 1: was commuted and the fathers was to be carried out,
- 51:06Speaker 1: I believe because the kid was only it was I
- 51:08Speaker 1: think seventeen would have happened. But the father also falsified
- 51:11Speaker 1: who killed what and lied and false fied some documents
- 51:14Speaker 1: and did some things that were somehow during this exchange,
- 51:19Speaker 1: Dad uh wanted to make make it so he had
- 51:24Speaker 1: shot the bear. Not yeah, not the kids. It was
- 51:27Speaker 1: Dad's tag that ended up on the south. Oh really,
- 51:31Speaker 1: and they've got game cash. You said, they've got game
- 51:33Speaker 1: camera footage of of the You know, it's a little
- 51:36Speaker 1: bit like a little bit too late speaking of the
- 51:39Speaker 1: fine thing is that's good? The kid also part of
- 51:42Speaker 1: his sentence, which is like community service, suspended jail time, fines,
- 51:47Speaker 1: they also sentenced him to take hunter safety courts two
- 51:52Speaker 1: years two years no hunt, two years no hunt for that. No,
- 51:59Speaker 1: it's good. Ah, what do you what do you do?
- 52:03Speaker 1: I mean, I just feel like these folks have been
- 52:06Speaker 1: living underneath the rock somewhere. It's like, yeah, I mean
- 52:11Speaker 1: they're obviously they came back two days two days later
- 52:13Speaker 1: to try to clean it up. They obviously knew what
- 52:16Speaker 1: was going on. So throw the book, Adam, I say, yeah,
- 52:21Speaker 1: that's not not not cool. Bro Um, do you want
- 52:27Speaker 1: me to tell him about the Pennsylvania guy that might
- 52:29Speaker 1: get a couple of fines for not poaching but something, Yeah,
- 52:34Speaker 1: this is something we should talk about me. I wanted
- 52:35Speaker 1: to talk about this. Yeah, this is a crazy story. Yeah,
- 52:40Speaker 1: this felt. I gets a call from his buddies buddy
- 52:45Speaker 1: who must live on or he's near lake, and he says, hey, man,
- 52:47Speaker 1: a bunch of deer fell through the ice struggling. So
- 52:51Speaker 1: he shows up on the scene. Some of the deer
- 52:53Speaker 1: have gotten out, but there's a small box. It's a
- 52:55Speaker 1: spike of work, and yeah, he's still stuck in the wall.
- 53:00Speaker 1: So there's already already some rescuers, their fire department, I think,
- 53:04Speaker 1: and they get the buck out, and I think it's
- 53:06Speaker 1: a story when there was already some management, um, wildlife
- 53:10Speaker 1: management folks. They're on the scene and um the guy
- 53:14Speaker 1: volunteers to take the buck home and try to warm
- 53:17Speaker 1: it up. Nobody says no, so he's like so they're
- 53:21Speaker 1: like yeah, because the box like is not moving right,
- 53:24Speaker 1: He's just laying there, barely breathing. So these figures, I'll
- 53:26Speaker 1: stick him in the garage, throw some blankets on him
- 53:29Speaker 1: and hopefully get is you know, temperature back up, and
- 53:33Speaker 1: run out at the garage door. Well, uh, I think
- 53:36Speaker 1: he's in the garage for thirty six hours or something
- 53:38Speaker 1: and unfortunately dies. Well, then the Pennsylvania Game Commission comes
- 53:44Speaker 1: around and says, you shouldn't have taken that deer. You
- 53:48Speaker 1: can relocate wildlife, but it has to be from one
- 53:51Speaker 1: wild area to another. You can't take it home and
- 53:55Speaker 1: keep it alive. Now he's looking at find up to
- 54:00Speaker 1: of dollars the deer died. Talk about that that's that's
- 54:04Speaker 1: very hard to prove because look at where white tails live,
- 54:09Speaker 1: like that could be as wild as that could do
- 54:12Speaker 1: is garage. It could be just as wild as und
- 54:17Speaker 1: I would disagree with the garage, as wild as anything.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Maybe maybe he needed to be outside next to the driveway,
- 54:25Speaker 1: next to the shrubs. And then I see what you're saying.
- 54:28Speaker 1: The pictures, he's just a picture. It's like he's got
- 54:32Speaker 1: laid out with a blanket and a Pillow's got a pillow.
- 54:37Speaker 1: It's like laid out like a child laying there. It's
- 54:39Speaker 1: like it's like a deer. So he didn't even I
- 54:41Speaker 1: haven't liked it. I have a lot of question about
- 54:43Speaker 1: diddy check. He's in the garage. The buck is laying
- 54:47Speaker 1: on his side, his head's on a pillow, and he's
- 54:49Speaker 1: like funked in with a blanket. He's trying to help.
- 54:53Speaker 1: It's all boils down to your intention because they thought
- 54:55Speaker 1: pettent it would calm it. Now, No, that's not gonna help.
- 54:59Speaker 1: That's like not what he's after. Uh my buddy Ryan
- 55:03Speaker 1: Laton one time was he pulled he fished two fawns,
- 55:08Speaker 1: two fawn blacktails out of the ocean and pulled him
- 55:12Speaker 1: up on his landing craft and one died. I think
- 55:17Speaker 1: then you know when he got wrapped up in a
- 55:18Speaker 1: space blanket and got it to shore and wrapped up
- 55:22Speaker 1: in another blanket and got it warmed off, and event
- 55:24Speaker 1: she ran off, so he'd be like breaking the law.
- 55:27Speaker 1: But do you like he didn't bring home. Here's a
- 55:29Speaker 1: whole different left turn. Would you do you eat it?
- 55:31Speaker 1: At that point the deer dies in your garage with
- 55:34Speaker 1: a pillow in the blanket, I think this guy probably
- 55:36Speaker 1: doesn't eat it. Basically, yeah, I feel like it respect
- 55:41Speaker 1: to the deer that you would eat it rather than
- 55:42Speaker 1: just bury it. I can relate pretty closely to the story.
- 55:45Speaker 1: I was out antelop hunting one day and found a
- 55:48Speaker 1: white tail fawn that had been smoked by a truck
- 55:52Speaker 1: and was laying in the middle of the road, very wounded.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Um heavily king cussed, but it's its legs were not broken.
- 55:59Speaker 1: And within a year of finding this year, I had
- 56:01Speaker 1: found another fawn that was horribly hit by a car, alive,
- 56:06Speaker 1: all legs broken, and I shot the deer put it
- 56:09Speaker 1: out of its misery on the side of the road,
- 56:11Speaker 1: and that was a horrible experience. Anyways, I find this
- 56:14Speaker 1: other one and its legs are not broken. So I
- 56:18Speaker 1: did with this Pennsylvania guy did I've loaded him up
- 56:21Speaker 1: and I called f WP as I took it home
- 56:23Speaker 1: and I said, I've just found this wounded baby deer.
- 56:26Speaker 1: They said that cannot be in your possession. You need
- 56:29Speaker 1: to uh go put it back you found it or
- 56:33Speaker 1: quickly handed off to someone else. So I took care
- 56:37Speaker 1: of it for a short period of time and handed
- 56:39Speaker 1: it over to a wildlife sanctuary in Hamilton, Montana. And
- 56:43Speaker 1: as far as I know that deer lived a happy,
- 56:45Speaker 1: healthy life, why do you doubt it? Because I hear
- 56:50Speaker 1: I've heard from people that like that they have a
- 56:53Speaker 1: horrible time, uh deal with wounded wounded deer. This thing,
- 56:59Speaker 1: this thing was heavily can cussed, like its head was
- 57:02Speaker 1: just spinning around, lived happily ever after well, I was
- 57:07Speaker 1: around the deer for upwards of a week and UH
- 57:11Speaker 1: took it. Yeah, I love it. Not really interesting, Yeah
- 57:20Speaker 1: I do. I yeah, especially after it was like this
- 57:22Speaker 1: this Uh you know, I had like a second chance
- 57:25Speaker 1: because a year prior I had uh yeah, put it,
- 57:29Speaker 1: put down this poor little creature that I can't fix
- 57:32Speaker 1: your broken legs. You know, this thing didn't have a chance.
- 57:34Speaker 1: So I did. I finished off a very wounded deer
- 57:37Speaker 1: on the side of the road, and it broke my heart.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And then a year later I was like, maybe this
- 57:41Speaker 1: one has a chance. Its legs are not broken. And
- 57:44Speaker 1: so it made it through the first week and as
- 57:47Speaker 1: far as I know, lived happily ever after in Hamilton,
- 57:49Speaker 1: Montana at a wild life sanctuary. Did they name it No?
- 57:55Speaker 1: I named it a little baby road rash because it
- 57:57Speaker 1: was scraped up real bad. This is really I'm looking
- 58:01Speaker 1: at you totally different to me now, man. I like
- 58:03Speaker 1: what I'm seeing. I like what I'm seeing when I
- 58:05Speaker 1: look at you. This is a related story, uh that
- 58:10Speaker 1: the guy wrote in about the guy lives in Idaho
- 58:13Speaker 1: and he runs into a guy who is from an
- 58:17Speaker 1: out of stator from Ohio who's out wolf hunting and
- 58:22Speaker 1: the guy's asking around. He says he's been hunting, has
- 58:25Speaker 1: took us off, hasn't seen any wolves. This guy says, well,
- 58:28Speaker 1: I'll keep my eyes. I won't let you know what
- 58:30Speaker 1: I hear and what I see, and likewise, let me
- 58:32Speaker 1: know if you are running any elk. Because he's hunting
- 58:35Speaker 1: for elk. Oh guys from Missouri, not Ohio. So he
- 58:41Speaker 1: goes out hunting elk. The local goes out hunting elk,
- 58:45Speaker 1: gets into a bunch of wolves, calls a dude from Missouri.
- 58:48Speaker 1: The dude tells him he man get out to this area.
- 58:51Speaker 1: The guy goes out, sure enough, gets a wolf. So
- 58:54Speaker 1: he's real happy with this local fella. Then he calls
- 58:57Speaker 1: him and he's saying, you're not gonna believe this. This
- 59:00Speaker 1: the Missouri guy in Idaho calling the local fellow. You're
- 59:03Speaker 1: not gonna believe this. But we turned onto a bridge
- 59:06Speaker 1: and there was a big bull standing on the bridge,
- 59:11Speaker 1: and this bull jumped off the bridge and it right
- 59:15Speaker 1: now is laying down on the rocks with a broken back.
- 59:23Speaker 1: So come get it. Yeah, Well, a while later, the
- 59:28Speaker 1: guy calls the wolf hunter calls the guy back, goes,
- 59:32Speaker 1: I'm telling you, man, we just drove by again and
- 59:34Speaker 1: now it's dead on the rocks. He says, it's a
- 59:38Speaker 1: big bull and the guy, the local guy was like,
- 59:41Speaker 1: were there from Missouri? Is probably a raghorn. What do
- 59:43Speaker 1: they know about big bulls? With him and his body
- 59:45Speaker 1: who still got a elk? Take drive over. It's a
- 59:51Speaker 1: three fifty bulls laying dead under the bridge. And he said,
- 59:55Speaker 1: we had a grueling twenty yard pack out. Yeah, tagged
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: in the haul the home a little. I've seen a
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: video of he said me. It was all good video
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: of somebody driving their car across the bridge and some
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: rut crazed white tail comes onto the bridge and it
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: doesn't know where to go and it spills off the
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: side and executes itself pretty promptly. When I was going
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: to the University of Montana, I can't remember, it was
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: five or seven mule deer got into the parking garage,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: spiraled their way up the ramps to the top of
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: the parking garage, and then all bailed off and we're
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: all laying dead in the pile below the parking garage,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: off the edge there. And I remember at the same
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: around the same time, a mountain lion killed mule and
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: stashed against the mechanical building, buried it against the cancer.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: It's like this big rock over this big rock over here,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: University Montana. You know, I think there's two students that
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: have been thoroughly beaten by white tails on campus. Yeah.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: This one guy was walking back from a uh Grizzly
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: basketball game on this A sports team called the Grizzlies
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: could be the other thing that you can put together
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: in picture Grizzly Bears playing basketball. Yes. Um. Then uh yeah,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: she came around the corner and uh, you know, dark
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: corner of building there on campus, and started the white
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: tail doe who had turned into the corner and didn't
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: have anywhere to go, so she the dough turned around
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and proceeded to pummel this gal into a massive concussion. Yeah,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: it's too bad. She's still alive. Yes, as far as
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I know, so is the deer. What else you got you?
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: I got one from this conversation. Let me ask you
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: guys this, let me pull you guys on the pole.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: You is a poll that finds out how smart people are.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: So you're looking at a little button buck, speaking of box,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: and you're looking at a little button buck, and you
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: see how he has like the raised hair where his
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: antlers will be. Do bucks shed that little teensy disc
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: or not? Oh, I'm gonna say, yeah, everybody's gonna be
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: quiet now, I gotta. I'm not staining from this because
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: I know I know the answer. I do not know
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: the You know the answer, then you know that it's
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: slightly inconclusive. I'm gonna say, like, maybe they don't do
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, like they spit off a little scab,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: or just say maybe they don't because it becomes part
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: of the base of the pedicle later on it So
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: you're saying it throws off a little scaba, you're going
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: middle ground. I don't want no. I'm saying that he's
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: he's gonna shut a spineless I want to he's a
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: soft man. He's a soft man with the deer phone.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I can tell you hard man with a mountain lions. Yeah,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I think I think they shed a little do not shed?
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I think you're probably right, But I'm not sure. We're
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: talking about this because some guy was asking about it
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: and Brody was digging into it. Like the pedicles which
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: were begin growing at a couple of months of age,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: and buck fons provide the base from which the antler
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: will grow. So the little small hair covered hair covered
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: bumps are just a developing They're not antlers like the root.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Infantile antlers are actual hardened antlers on a buck fawn
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: have not. This birth is tricky. They're saying this is
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: a research who was done in Virginia. They said in
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Virginia they have not been documented, meaning no buck. They
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: don't know if any bucket Virginia that actually grew a
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: hardened antler, of button buck that grew a hard and
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: antler and dropped it. But it says that they have.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: They have been reported in other states that it would
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: grow a little dency dency I was getting that little wetting. Yeah,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: they grow their first set antlers and they are approximately
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: one year of age. So you're saying that's the development
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: of the pedicle, is what you're seeing. But reported there,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: that's where it gets tricky. All that that All that
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: means is some guys said, hey, man, I've seen it,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: said you said you knew the answer cow is that
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: where you were like all this hardcore? No, how yeah,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: it is. It is my understanding that that is the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: development of the pedicle um. It does not shed um,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: and U if you know, some of those big bucks
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: may just have extra entry two on everybody by having
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: an over developed pedicle. I'm not saying that you can't.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: You don't measure the pedicle, man, No, just by looks yeah, look,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: might look yeah yeah, true, you're good, Jani got uh
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: what do you gotta add there to that? Concluders even no,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: not even a general concluder. Oh, I can come up
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: with one. Is it time for that yet? It's not
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: you gotta go somewhere. No, it's Friday. Man. Just feeling
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I'm feeling like I like what I was set out
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to get done has been gotten done. Um, I got
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: a good one. Charlie wrote in about and since we
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: got Pete here, I think you can help us answer
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: because I actually was dealing with this the other day
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: and I was wishing I could call Pete and asking
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: what I should do. But Charlie's I'm wondering how we
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: keep our gear and clothes clean, especially from blood, and
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: how do we keep them old or free? What tricks
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and tips do we have? Mostly I was wondering about
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: how to get the blood out of my stone. Glacier
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: pack packs are a big one because you bleach them.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: It ruins the stitching. Don't don't go bleaching your backpack.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I don't use bleach. Yanni uses hydrogen broxid bad or good.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: I think that sounds a little aggressive. I need to
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: aggress it. If you'd leave it on from water, rinsing
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: it off pretty quick immediately, guy, spray brush, rinse, spray brush,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: rince until it's gone. I'm a soaker. I get my
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: bathtub full of hot water and I just submerge everything
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: for twenty four hours and then I come back with
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the dish brush and buff it off and then kind
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: of repeat that cycle a handful of times. As far
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: as keeping blood off your gear, if you don't have
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: blood on your gear, you're not doing it right. And uh,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: if you don't smell bad, you're also not trying hard enough.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: So it's just the nature of of getting after it.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: But cleaning it up simple enough. I think you just
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: I soak it and scrub it over and over with
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: a light detergent. Yeah, Mark Kanyon. In the white tail world,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: we'll probably have a different answer for I think keeping
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: the stuff away free, but I could up in the
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: white set world, man, that's just a different in the West,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: it's a different thing. Seth had is a separate washing
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: machine that you bought somewhere so that he only used
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: a white tail. Outfits in the Midwest that have separate
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: changing rooms, like separate clean rooms where you go in
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: and as ionizers all, you know, mounted on the wall
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: and you have a locker with and you put yourself
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: in a zipper and it's got an ionizer to kill
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: the scent. And you're not allowed to go in there
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: after you've eaten. You're not. I mean, you go in
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: there with your hunting clothes and that's it. No smoking
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: cigarettes in that room. Nothing, And that's that's that's what
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: they do, and that's not I've seen probably more extreme
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: examples than that though. Um. The Yeti Panga bags, the
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: there waterproof duffle is completely sealed. So I used to
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: use that as a you know, when you're traveling no
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: way or in or out, that's completely you know, non
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: contammenta or uncontaminated whatever the word is. UM situation trying
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: to do that when you can. Was the mug asking
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: that question? Was he um was he coming like like
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: was he talking about like older free for hunting purposes
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: or older free for just home purposes, like he didn't
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: want the stuff all smelly. Wasn't that much context in here,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: got it? Sorry, Yeah, you're that's I mean, that's a
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: regional thing. Like in the Midwest and in the East,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: hardcore white tail hunters are for sure, there's Western bow
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: hunters that that do, uh go to the same extremes.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: They might try not do the same things, they certainly go.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I haven't invested a scent in order eliminating or order
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: masking things specific to hunting in I mean since easy
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: ten plus years. At this point, I still wash all
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: my clothes at the like the scent free detergent all that.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I gave up real hard on that. I grew up
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: in Ohio hunting deers and drank that kool Aid and
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: it was hardcore scent cover. Yeah, I love the cool Aid.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: But one time to Montana starting hunting milk, you can't.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: You were going to sweat, You're going to smell bad,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: and if you're not, you're not probably not getting on elk.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: So I quickly just completely abandoned just play the wind.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think there's there's like room and we
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: you know, we used to try. We used to have
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: a lot of things. We even try, like having extra clothes.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: We would like hike in one set of clothes and
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: keep an extra set of clothes and only use those
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: clothes for when you're in like total hunt mode. Go
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: down to the creek or a bottle of you know,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: we had baking soda in a spray bottle and getting
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: creek water and putting it in there and spraying everything,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: Like none of that hurts. You're never be like, well,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: I would have got the bull if I hadn't been
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: doing good sin control. Uh, none of it hurts, But
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: it's hard to maintain. You want to get lazy, you
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: want to it's just or you do a lot. And
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: on the backcountry hunt, I'd say it's almost negligible. I
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: think where you can do it and make it worthwhile
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: because you have just the luxury of a truck or
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: a trailer is on like a spot. It's something like
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: that where you're hunting your every day. You're coming back
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: to a camp where if you wanted to, you could
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: have a separate change of clothes. The bulk of the
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: white tail hunters or day hunt man like they're going
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: from their house ye walking out to the stalking out
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: to the tree standards you know from the lease or whatever.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Then it seems doable. But why not be paranoia? Man?
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Why not? Un Plus, you're sitting your stationary in a
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: tree and everything, all your scent and everything that, um,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: you're affecting the environment around you, and you basically sit
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: there and watch your effect all day, like every time
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: a deer comes and looks. I mean, that's your key
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: in on those effects. Whereas when you're spotting, talking is
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: the less of that intimacy. When I used to trap
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: red fox, you had to be totally. You had to
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: be more paranoid than than a paranoid bowl hunter? Can
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: you talk about like all the equipment? It takes a lot.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Last time we did this, Q and A did I
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: dropped the one about shooting offhand and a buddy was
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: watching his Uh, A guy was watching his buddy miss
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: a bunch of box and he's like, wondering about shooting
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: rests in the field. It's funny you mentioned that because
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: I have one that's the same but probably different. You
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: don't mean to read this one off And I'll tell
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you this than you do yours. And it was different
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: or not? Him and his buddy have ongoing quote discussion.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: So I got it. That means an argument about siting
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: and her rifles. His buddy thinks his body likes sighted
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: his rifle shooting free hand because that's how he's hunting anyway,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: That's all I need to know. OK, So I'm going
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: that's like saying I like to fully drunk. He's like,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: he sighted your rifle in a real life shooting situation,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: and the guy that wrote it and says that this
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: has to be bullshit, Go ahead with yours. I agree
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: with the guy right now, But what was your guy? Um?
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Dan rode in. So then a couple of weeks ago
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: he had a buddy that missed big mule with your
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: buck because he took an off hand shot at a
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: hundred and seventy yards off hand, off hand, find a tree,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: bro and later they got back on the buck, and
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: rather than taking the time to find a good rest,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: he tried another off hand shot and missed again. He
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: tried to convince him to take the time to find
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: a good rest before he shot, but he felt like
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the buck was going to get away. What are your
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: thoughts on rifle, bipod shooting sticks and shooting off packs,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the best shooting rest in the field, very different questions.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I think you need to examine on how much getting
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: away of the white tail buck did in that scenario,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Which did it get away more in which scenarios at
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: the very least in that situation. If you feel like
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: this bucks about the crest of hill, or he's gonna
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: do somewhere, he's gonna get away and find a tree
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: and and lean against a tree or do something to
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: to get more stable, don't just wheel swing your gun
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: and blast one off like that's a little bit irresponsible.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I never even paid attention to yardages. But man, I
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: have not taken Oh, I have not taken a whole
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: lot of cracks freehand, except for things that are just
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: real clothes. Go to the range and just lay down,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: taking the rest hunting cottentails in my twenty two go
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: to the range and lay down prone and shoot a shot,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: then then kneel and shoot a shot, and then stand
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: up freehand and shoot shot and see what we're all.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Three of those land guarantee you know you're gonna get
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: further away from your target each town. Or I don't
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: guarantee you, but I would guess your damn question. Oh yeah, man, hunter,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: senty five yards off hand is freaking super long, compelling,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Like I don't even I think if most let's just
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: say the people in this room off hand, a hundred
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: sent yards with a with your big game hunting rifle.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: If you threw an elk out there and elk giant
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: ass animal, I'd say that for us. I bet you
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: we would just tee laying a bullet anywhere on that
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: target you'd be at. You probably hit it three times
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: out of tin. That's my guess. How far away was
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: that at our Christmas party? How far away was that?
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: That was a hundred yards? That was a hundred yards?
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: That was And I think what was that? Yeah? How
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: many people hit? Four? Five? I hit? Dude, I just
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: close my eyes and I was like, I'll is feelings. Yeah, okay,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: so four of us hit that one. Yeah, there's a
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: little go for squirrel steel silhouette at any other than us,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: there wasn't very many more. I don't know what that means.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: And that was out of thirty people people? That was
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: it that bad? That's a very hard Also, Also it
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: was in the dark for most people, like there were
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: it was an orange painted target, but it was dark
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: and you were standing in a little like porch area,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: so that makes a little bit tougher. I'd say, yeah,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: I was really antiochy stuff. Yeah. I was like, I
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: don't want to I hate to admit this now, but
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I was surprised. Yeah. I got Mitch Hedberg's saying like
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: he has a lot of acting experience. He says because
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: when he was playing pool and he makes a shot,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: he always has to act like he's not surprised. So, um,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: I agree with was like, I got I was not
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: feeling cocked. I was there early enough that I gotta
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: shoot it when it's still light out. So I felt
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: like maybe had a distinct advantage of probably helped, you know.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: When I squeeze the trigger, I was like, well, this
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: isn't gonna work out, but yeah, um but yeah good.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: For as far as recommendations for good shooting rests, um,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: I always trying to get low as low as possible. Um.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: And if you don't have the time to get lower,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: if you don't have the you know, clear landscape underneath
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: you to get low because there's brush or grass whatever,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: then uh, you know the next best thing would be
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: on your butt. Using some shooting sticks or shooting sticks
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: standing or yeah, the tree, like Ben said, I mean
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: that's a everybody should know how to do that. You
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: could easily make a two plus yard shot by leading
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: your rifle into a tree. Um, if you get lucky,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: there's a cross branch and get you get a little
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: crotch and then uh, I mean it's damn near like
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: having a you know, tripod rest our body Tony Paul's kill. Uh.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: He teaches he's a sniper and struck in the Marine
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Corps and when doing like makeshift using makeshift rests like
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: a rail tree stuff like that, he talks about you
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: need to have either the push or the pole. Ah
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: makes sense. Yeah, when you're sitting there with him shooting,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: it makes sense. But there's always a little bit of
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: like there's like like even when you're going on a tree,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: you kind of like wedge it where you can get
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: a little you can lean into it a little bit.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: You know what, do you explain that a little bit more?
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Because that's that's when he meant by the pool was
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: he was having and this was when he was You
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: can watch on the episode with Helen and Brittany in
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Wisconsin Doug's place, but when he was saying the pool,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: he was actually having having them hold onto the sling
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: coming off of the fore end and then pulling that
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: in towards their body, creating a little bit of tension exactly.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: That tension, you know, creates you to lock up together.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Same thing like if you shoot off your butt, you
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: put your elbows on the outsides of your knees and
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: then kind of suck your arms in against those knees,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: and that creates that attention to or digging a toe
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: in when you're laying prone and giving a little little
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: push off the toe. Three points of contact. You guys,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: shooting off your knee works pretty damn good. You know,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: we've done a lot of and this is some people
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: think this is a question but I don't think it's questionable.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: I've shot a number of big game things and otherwise
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: over my buddy's shoulder. Oh yeah, yeah, we do it.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I'm not recommending people do it, but I'm just telling
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: you that something we've done successfully. I've never seen that before. Man.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: You just like, we we'll set up where you just
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: they just bend over obviously put their hand on their ears,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: and you're like almost laying on them and then tap
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: them and that means hold your breath and it's roight.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I can't say I didn't run into an Africa one
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: time like the trackers over there. Don't do that for dude,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Yeah right right from the um, but you can that
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: brings anohing. I am not a fan of like standing
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: shooting sticks, particularly thinking about the ones they roll out
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: in Africa like this. No, I've never used them there
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: man there it almost seems like it's more unstable than
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: shooting for you, and at some level it's weird, but
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: I've never had luck with it. There's kind of an
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: easy cooking one laid at me. Um, speaking of uneasy shooting,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I don't know. Um alright. This is from the little
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Evan who's sing belt I'm sink felt from Sportsman's Lion.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Oh yes, oh um Evan. This is rough a month
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: late in response, but we got so. I'm smoking a
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: whole venison backstrap tonight. I typically smoke it to a
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: rare temp and then sear it in a cast iron
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: with butter, which brings the finished temp to medium rare.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Have you ever combined this with the suvie meaning what
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: he wants to do is he wants to smoke it
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: to get the smoke flavor, and then throw it in
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: a bag and um drop it in the suvie to
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: maintain the tamp until he's ready to sear it. He's
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: wondering if if that would work and and be appropriate.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I would think this would be like if you're in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: that Christmas situation and you're cooking for a bunch of
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: folks and you got a bunch of things going on
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: and you don't want to worry about overcooking something or
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: serving something cold. And that is a huge reason that
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: suvie it's so popular in the restaurant industry. What he's
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: saying like, smoke it, suvit it. And then if the
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: question is have I done it now and I can't
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: picture smoking it and then having it be that just
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: can't picture it. I think he just wants to maintain
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: that tamp so it's not cold, right, So he's not
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: gonna overcook it on the smoker. He's gonna bring it off,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: and then he wants to maintain it at it at
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: that below medium rare camp and then when everything else
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: is ready, he's gonna pop that thing out of the bag.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: When you in your scenario, could Uh, what I've done
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: in the past is because I don't like to not
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: let stuff rest. Sometimes it's always in a tinfoil or
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: a luminou foil, but sometimes in a yeti hopper, so
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: you can smoke it, or you smoke it, get it
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: to you know, ten degrees or ten to fifteen degrees
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: below where you want it. If you say you've got
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: an hour or two, wrap it tinfoil, put it in
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: your yett he zip it up tight, right because you
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: know over that time that heat's gonna stay in there,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: it's gonna continue to cook it. And then when you
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: get it to where you're going see it, then yeah,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: that's what I've done in the past. So just say
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: just tell your your bros you're coming over Christmas, like, hey,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: look I want to I just need a cast starn
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: skillet ready to see it when I get there. That way,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: it's crispy still, and you don't because a lot of
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: times when you let it rest after you've seared it,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: it kind of takes away that crispy, crusty consistency that
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: you get when you see it and then just serve
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: it all those good carcinogens we like. So some people
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: do see her and then drop it in the suit.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: You could do that too, but you definitely have all
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: that moisture in the bag. And I think that was
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: the way to go. But now I think it's like
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: the reverses. Like when I first started messing with it,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I thought that was cool, but now it's like definitely
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: better because you just stew it. Yeah, you get you
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: lose your out, you know, you know, you lose your
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: outside cool Chris Well, that that's searing, that initial shock
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: to you know what I'm saying, Yeah, oh no, yeah,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: like schemes, but that initial shock, that searing it on
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: all sides, that starts the process of that meat going
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: to another stage and breaking down the proteins you don't
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: here and then put it somewhere that's gonna steam it.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: And then it gets soft again and you've got kind
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: of a weird consistence. That's what a lot of the
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: recipes are though, really, and then then you come back
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: out and crisp R up again. It depends what you
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: finished product is too. If you're like going to pick
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: something that doesn't matter. Guy asked, can you freeze? Do
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: your heart deliver? Heart freeze is as good as anything
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: on the planet. I trim them, core him out, trim
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: ahead of time, I do. I core him out, trim
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: the fat off the upper you know, the fat part,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: trim the tallow off that, and freeze him. Is that
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: a space time? What's the reason why do I trim
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: it first? I don't know. Man, When I put my
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: stuff freezer, I like it's I feel like I like
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: to typically I've done all versions, but in my mind,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: what I'm typically trying to do is freeze ingredient recipe ready. Yeah,
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: in a perfect world, you're freezing recipe ready stuff. So
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: I'll take my heart court, wash it out court, trim
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: the tallel off the top lip, then freeze it. It
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: freezes for a million years. Yeah. A few day I
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: was telling my kid, what was he telling me? He's
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: telling me something. I said, Man, I bet you million bucks.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: He's like, oh, you got a million dollars. It's just
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: it's just the thing we say, are you serious right now? Yeah?
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: You don't want to take the back a million years.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: A few years liver man, I used to say, like,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: I used to freeze, and liver is not a good idea.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: I've never had any luck, no I know, but I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: used to like do it anyway, and he thought, and
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: like all the water comes out and winds up being
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: like rubbery and it just doesn't work. You just gotta
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: eat it. Ron Layton freezes. Yeah. Run later. You freeze
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: livers and given to me and I take the livers hole.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: But it's just I got you over. Oh man, that's wonderful.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Run antelope liver in the freezer right now. Specifically for
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: sausage though, So I got a sauceage dress bee where
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: I'll I'll feed that liver into the grinder and mix
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: everything up. Is I think it's a bad idea. What
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: kind of sausage dress fees that liver works? No, But
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: my buddy Jim makes liver worset that kicks ass. That's
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: like the best breakfast meat on the planet. Not wild
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: game liver. Yeah really yeah. The thing about liver Worst is, though,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: is that it's not that when you look at everything
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: in liver Worst, it's like tem percent liver exactly. You're
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: because you're eating a lot of milk and a lot
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: of fat. It's it's flavoring. Dude. That was my old
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: man sandwich dude. Riber liver Worst, sliced onion and mustard's gonna. Yeah,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: sometimes feel like going down and buy Like I don't
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: like to buy meat stores. Man, I sometimes feel like
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: going down to buying me big old liver worst. I'm making.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: We're traveling sometime, we should get a big thing of
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: liver worst, Dude, we should. You should come to the
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: Latvian hunting camp in Wisconsin. Um, the guys from Milwaukee
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: show up. I don't know, probably twenty pounds of you
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: singers liver worst and all sorts of other fine sausages
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: and pork products from there. Man. And that's all we eat,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: as far as like sandwich is going into the field.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: It's just right Latvian rye bread, which is kind of
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: not regular. Oh, I think it's twice as good better. No,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: it's not. I'm telling you. It's not what you consider right.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: It's more of a like a sour dough. Dude. You
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: can knock someone out with that bread. The stuff that
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: I bring around, it's a dense bread. Yes, it's like
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: a kind of bread if you threw it to a duck.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Duck better be a diver. That bread is gonna sink
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: on lake man. No, for sure, it's a dense bread.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: But I could see man a liverworst. God, I'm dying.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: I'm making liverworst with that liver. You guys are gonna
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: want some, sorry, but the lowest grade liver worst. It
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: was like Oscar. They had like a yellow wrapper on it.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: It came in like a log with a yellow rapper.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: And my old man too, He would buy bread and
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: not let other people eat his bread. So if you
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: went into the kitchen, it was like the old man's
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: bread and then the family's bread. You couldn't have his
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: bread unless you asked him about it. Did he grow poor? Oh? Yeah?
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: I recommend if you're listening, you're gonna go try something.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: Don't go into this regular grocery and buy the Oscar
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: may or brown Schweigger or liver worst. You're not getting
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: the same like going to a deli. Go to a
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: Jewish deli and get the good ship because it's well
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: worth it. Yeah, I hear you. I saw a new
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: friend of mine who is uh. They're Jewish and they've
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: always grown up going. Have I talked about this before? Tongue?
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I told the story before. Never one last one? You guys,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: good for one more one? Here's another one. There's a
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: guy that wrote in he's all confused about the difference
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: between party hunting, party hunting, and party applications. Yeah, there's
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: kind of like two questions from two different people. But
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: one of the guys demonstrated some level of like he's like,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: he's looking at a out of state hunting app and
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: it's a party application, and he's like, dude, party hunting,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: that's no good. That's a great point. I have never
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: thought two very different things, the semantics things. But he's right, like,
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: why why not change the term, you know in the
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: application sense party application? I filled out, why him? Why
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: can't I shoot your miss? We all got start? Who
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: want us to start with party hunting, which is where
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: we're sharing tags? And party hunting is where there's five
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: people at this table. Two of us have a tag,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: all five of us go hunting. Everybody's up to bed,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: everybody's not bad. Is that is that it's legal in
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: some place. I don't know if that's necessarily legal that
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: I've never done it that way. Where I've done it legally,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: all of us would have had tags, we'd all be
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: out in the field hunting. Possibly five deer come by,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: I shoot all five, and you guys come over and
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: tag them yes and no. That might be the case
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: some places, but there are places where you think, like,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: that's what I'm saying, main moose tan. You can designate
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: it's a party tag's part. You can designate, yeah, draw
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: the tag, but you can designate other guys to hunt
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the same tag and you can all be out. I
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: think you're supposed to be in like you're supposed to
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: be in some definition of communication. But you draw it.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: You go like, I'm party hunt with you. You you're
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: both hunt. But again, there's some sort of formal agreement
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: or there's some sort of tag tag that's saying that
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: this is the deal. It's not just like, oh, I'm
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: out here without a hunting license or a tag at all. Happened?
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: You know, the illegal party hunting and then there's the
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: party hunting illegal senses of what I was trying to describe.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: And well, we grew up doing a lot of illegal
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: party hunting. Okay, but here's the deal party hunting that
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: what I just described is legal in Wisconsin as not
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: not legal here, and we did it illegally in mission
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: before I even knew that was illegal. But it would
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: be that your group of guys I'll have buck tags.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Someone gets a dough tag. It was in when I
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: was growing up, it was like it was viewed as though,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: if you see a dough Bob's got a tag, which
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: is not illegal, that's right, but you'd go yell for
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Bob and Bob would run over and that was an
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: illegal thing. Didn't even know it was illegal. Now in
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: Wisconsin explained again what you're saying is there And this
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: is the last time I looked into it, and I
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: believe they define it as like within communication where you
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: can yell at the other hunter that might be tagging
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: the deer. But if you're all licensed and a group
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: of deer comes by, you can shoot more as long
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: as someone in that group and that's within shouting distance
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: of you can come over and tag that. You can't
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: have a dude with you who has no tag. You
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: could have with you, but he can't be carrying a
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: rifle you got you got you? Yeah, he can't be
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: actively hunting. He needs to be a licensed hunter. Now
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: this brings up a thing we haven't got into party
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: applications yet, but another thing I'm party hunting. Another question.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: The guy that I've been meaning to get to and
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: never got to it him his buddy or hunting black bears.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: His body's got a black bart tag. He doesn't so
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Mug one, Um, Mug one has a black bertag. Mug
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: two does not have a black bertag. Mugg one but
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: they're hunting deer, okay, Mug one clouch gets a shot
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: at bicker. Mug two runs up, the black bear is
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: running off his body. Gotta hit. Mug one, gotta hit.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: But it wasn't a mortal wound. Mug two kills it.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: That's against the law. It's a strange one, and it's
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: one where you get put into like civil law versus
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: moral law. And I've been in that situation in the
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: past and where you're like, well, however things played out,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: you're gonna have like a you're gonna have an unre
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: wounded yet unrecovered animal um. And I've been in that situation,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: and it does It puts you in a It puts
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you in a little bit of a bind. I think
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: that the game Morden is probably gonna look at and
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: be like, sorry, man, you killed it. Yeah, And unfortunately,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: there's just there's too much room for interpretation and too
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: much room for taking it. You know, and cheating that
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: rule if it's not you know, done that way, because
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: because guys would just walk around killing animals for planets
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: all the time because they're fighting. What we're talking that
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: that rules fighting. What we're talking about, the two guys
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: walking around, one guy shoot you like, come ever, you're
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: real quick. Yeah, So the gray areas what you want
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: to try to eliminate. Yeah, like the scenario like he
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: has and I take at face value what he's saying.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: It's just that, um, it was like it was look
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: like it was gonna get away, and he didn't want
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: it to get away, but he went And so yeah,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: I mean, you definitely broke a law because I know
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: what state has occurred to you broke a law. Maybe
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: just throwing out a hypothetical. I don't know, um party applications.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Who wants to take that one? I can talk about
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: it a little bit about you want to go hunting,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: maybe with your family or your friends, and you're like,
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: I'd rather draw this tag with you or not at all.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: That's a good way to put it. So I've got
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: I like taking some of my family members hunting who
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: maybe are not going to go hunting on their own.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: So we apply as a party, and it's like, hey,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: like we're all we're all gonna get it, or none
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: of us are going to get It's not like you're
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: gonna just talk with this tag and nobody's gonna be
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: able to go go on this hunt with you. So
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: I think it's a way to ensure that your core
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: group of fellow sportsman or family that you're hunting with
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: will all all get the permit and you can do
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: it as a group. This guy was asking was it
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: a good idea or not? And that's like, that's not
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: really answerable because it just depends on how bad you
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: want to go. I think it was not a way
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: to do it. Be like, if your eyeballing, like some
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: hunt you want to do, and and you'd make a deal,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: You're like, you could do a party app and then
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: you both get the goal on equal footing and goalth
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: got tag, but there's less of a chance that someone's
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: gonna have a tag. Or you make a deal and
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: be like, let's both put in single, but let's sign
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: a treaty right now, sign an agreement that if one
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: of us draws, we both go on the trip. But
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: if you don't hang out with that kind of person.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: Then it makes sense that that did you all put
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: in as a group, and then you all either go
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: and everyone's gone whole fully loaded, or everyone stays at home.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: It's party applications somehow there's a question does the well
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: doesn't would it prevent in some way party hunting? Like
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: I'm just thinking through this a little bit. If everybody
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: has a tag, then you don't have to share it
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: that comtely unrelated, man, I know, I know, but there's
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: a there's a there could be a corresponding thing there.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: If everybody has a tag, you don't have to worry
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: about That's right. You're trying to tie in party hunting,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: party apple. I was trying to be slick and I
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: was very That's why I was asking as a question
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: because I was pretty sure. There's also strategic play where
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: if I have ten ELK points and you have zero,
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: and we apply as a party, I kind of pull
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: I pull you up a little bit so I increase
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: your odds. Depends on the state, and you can apply
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: as a non resident. You could apply with a resident
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: on a party application. Um good, But Lisa stated, I've
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: done that in in Colorado. If you do that you're
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: both in the nonresident the nonresident, So the residents getting
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: dinged time, it can be it can handicap you. But
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: I've heard of a very go ahead. Oh. I just
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: I think that there are so many people. Um, if
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: we're being honest with ourselves, there's a lot of people
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: that ultimately enjoy the planning and the Google Earth thing
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: and lead up two the hunt, maybe even more than
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: the hunting the adventure themselves. Where Um, these party applications
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: are a big deal because they feel like they're they're
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: in the game. They got something to go with some
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: you know, something to plan towards or daydream about at
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: work or whatever. So um, I think that's that's a
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: big benefit to these party applications. Have you ever party
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: party applied? Yes? I have party applications out right now.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: I have one out. I didn't get invited about that. Well,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: it's being my bro because he's an Alaska resident. So
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: we partied up on a couple of things. Nice that sheep,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: I imagine partied up on some stuff. Sweet. Um what
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: else about that party hunt? That kind of covers the
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: party apps, parties, party party and it's a good way.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: I mean, it's just a It's a good way for
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: folks to plan, particularly if you're planning, um for an
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: out of state hunt, then you kind of know, like, yep,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: this is where we want to go, and you can
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: budget both time and montarily for how you're going to
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: approach that hunt. Yeah, I like that system. Here's here's
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: one last question ready our rabbits safety eat. Yes, yes,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. I have a concluder. Oh let
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: me you came up at one. Speaking of parties, Oh,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: I like a good time. There are some shows coming
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: out under the hood shows and some live podcasts that
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: have tickets still available. They are a Under the Hood
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: in Salt Lake City on February eight, and Under the
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: Hood in Cleveland, Ohio on February and Under the Hood
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: in Houston, Tajas February, and then live podcasts in Dallas
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: on the February and in Seattle on the fourteenth of March.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: So half of our shoulds are sold out. Those are
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: the five that still have a bunch of tickets. About Reno. Um,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: that's right, Reno, just because I'm gonna be there. Yeah,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: And and the date on that one standing try you're
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: going to Sheetday. I believe you guys are doing your
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: live podcast on Friday, February eighty Seventh's day. I've got
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: a calendar. I've got a calendar right here. It's it's
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: in the afternoon. Just one. It's a tough one for
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: something we just added the great Remy warrant. Remy will
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: be there. It's a tough one because it's a um
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: early afternoon show. Um, that's all right, you can start
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: drinking early that day. Yeah, man, quit word, yeah, don't quit,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: just take a break. Yeah, that's funny. It is on
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: the seventh on Thursday. Good job, ye jan what do
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: they call you down to Mexico? I can't remember, man. Yeah.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: Most of the time they make a funny. It's like
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: a jew down for the j I'll be like, no,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: it's just like Yamo, Like when you say your name
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: double L and they're like, yeah, Jonnas, don't tell me
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: how to say your name. Boy, you're in my phone
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: with a Y. Yanni does that on his emails, so
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: he writes right fanetical spelling, writes Janis and then he
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: puts in parentheses and on his Instagram it's like that too.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: I feel like it is. Yeah, it's Jannis. No that's
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: my dad. No, I don't think. Maybe it is, but
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: I feel like you're I feel like the name is
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: Janice and the handle is Janis Johnny's senior Janis Ni dude,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: I'm always just Steve Man. My dad calls you Steve
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: for Nelly, and he calls you Janice Pellis. He's a
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: proper redneck. I don't see any wise, but I guess
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: my has always your dad. Cal got any concluders, Oh
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: that was your concluier. That was a good one. Live
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: show dates coming up, man, get your tickets. Go to
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: the me eater dot com um and the tab is
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: the events and events events and check it out. UM
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: also got some speaking events coming up and those are
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: there as well. The places wrong be giving a give
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: keynotes and whatnot, so you can see those there. And
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Pheasant Peasant Fast and Shauanburg, Illinois, which someone told me
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: he's kind of like Chicago. It's a bit different than Chicago,
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: but close very similar. There's a yeah, there's a big
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: radius of suburbs. There got one coming up in Lander,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Wyoming at the UM Newly fanatics got, uh, you're going
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: to Harrisburg. Nope, Nope, I got one coming up in Yeah,
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: concluder gall that's where we were. Oh yeah, boy, get
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: a solid ress, go by a bypod. I mean, if
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: you're not touching that triggered knowing that you were going
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: to kill something, then you should not be touching that trigger.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: Speaking of bipods and uh citing in because it fella
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: city siting in off hand, I say too, if you're
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: gonna use a bipod, definitely site in using that bipod
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: because I know that my rifles have a much different
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: point of impact if I'm shooting off of a sandbag
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: on a bench and that bipod off of a bench.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: And even though a lot of guys will say don't
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: shoot the bipod off a concrete bench because that concrete
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: bench is so stiff compared if you just said it
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: on the ground that there's there's a difference point of impact.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean I was real world situations site
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: in the rifle, like locked into a lead sled. And
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: maybe maybe this is wrong, but I have always treated
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: my guns is sighted in locked into a lead sled,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: take every variable out of it, the gun is zero,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: and then any imperfection after that from shooting off of
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: a bipod or shooting freehand is your fault. Not not
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: so much the guns. Oh, I think it needs to
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: be adjusted to how you hold that rifle though too.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: There's gonna be like, I totally agree like you, you
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: sound the mechanics of everything. The gun is bedded properly,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: the scopes mounted properly. Um. You could even shoot your
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: groups off there and figure out your your loads um
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: bullets bullet and grain grain to grain um. And if
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: you want to go through that and proof all of
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: that and then adding the variable of the human component, um,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: then you will would still more than likely need to
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: make some adjustments to you know, your particular cheek weld. H. Yeah.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: I always like to just determine that the scope is
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: listening to me when I make adjustments, and like when
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: it's one of Lea's let you know, when you're they're
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: human air involved, when you're you know, sighting a gun
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: in so you're not always sure, but I always like
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: to make sure if I move it two inches down
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: to two inches right, that it does exactly that. I
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: feel like that's a good thing to know a new rifle.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: I mean, I'll tell you I don't do this. I
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: throw her, throw her down on top of my act
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: pack a lot of times, down on some chunk of
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: state wond or something, and make sure she's still still
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: hitting taped up. Talk about uh, cycling through the tracking
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: on your scope? Oh really zero to check, you know,
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: to check your scope like zero and then dial up
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: m A, then dial back twenty m and make sure
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: it lands back where it's supposed to it for a walk.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: That's particularly if you're using the scope where you're manually
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: dialing before your shots. And what happens if if you
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: don't feel like it's coming back to where it's you
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: got a problem? Yeah, you like you got a two
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: yards zero and you dial up for let's say you're
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: messing around and you're trying to press your bodies out.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: You shoot rock six hundred yards away and you dial
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: up six or seven and then you dial back. You
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: should do that at the range and when you dial back, like,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: is that where you're at? Because you might you could
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: you know, some skulls may have a problem. They don't
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: track back to where they're supposed to. Just something to
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: keep in mind. But I started using like the the
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: b DC radicals man, and it's not like, yeah, take
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: take one more thing out. Yeah, like I used to,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: I flirted with messing around dialing. I just like to
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: count hash marks. Yeah, it's a lot. It's just like
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: for me. It depends what kind of guy you are
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: and how your brain works and stuff. But my brain
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: is the kind of brain that does better when everybody's
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: locked in. I'm counting hash marks. Are you super solid
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: on your hash marks? Like yeah, yeah, do you ever
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: print something mountain tape it to your stock or yeah?
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: I print fifty yard increments two yards zero, and I
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: take a little thing that's two two fifty three, three
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: fifty four, fifty five fifty six, and I'll put it
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: on there. I'll put high ones on there because you
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: never know the situation where you got something getting away
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: from me that you you wounded or whatever. And then
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: I and then I just have plus and I round
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: them off. I don't have like, you know, three point
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: nine seven. It's like a round him four on where
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: I want them. And that's when you used to dial.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: You don't have that if you're reading your hash marks.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: I use it for my hash marks. Even though they're correlated,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: they're they're like you can correlate them for like most
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: like magnum rifles. Right, if you know you have a
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: two yards zero, then you know that the hashtards are
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: roughly right. But no, I I write it out, just
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: run that into blistic calculator every time. I'm just print
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: out a new new paper for everything. I'm sorry, I'm confused.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: If you're you're writing out what each hash mark equals. No,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: I'm writing out my drop. Okay, so I have like whatever,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: Like I understand that, but then how do you how
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: does that work when you look at your hash marks? Well,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: if I know I'm if I know I need to
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: If if I know I need to do four, then
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: I count down to hash marks and hold four. If
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: it's five, I got to count down to hash marks
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: and split the difference between four and six. The printed
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: out things just yeah, no four m o A what ever?
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: If you have if you have if you have a
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: like a stat what do you call like a stacked
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: radical right within their two m a a increments. If
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: I look and I'm like, oh, this shot, I'm going
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: to be four m o A low, then I go
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: down and go to the fourth the fourth, So you're
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: joggling that and knowing what the hash mark yardage is
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: or do you not do that? No? I just go
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: by I know what the how I know that, like
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: the minute of angle drop. I'm trying to compensate for
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: for it by using my because like the way I'll
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: do on the BDC is I'll have my little chart
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: printed out where it says the second hash is three two,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: the third hash is spot on. That's that's what I
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: was on your thing. Yeah, yeah, then you take that
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: to your stocks before you shoot. You like, oh, scope,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: I know what you're saying. That's another way. I think
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: that's that's a good way of achieve in the same thing.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Either way. Did you like that better than how I
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: do it? There's less math at to do in my
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: head in the moment. And there's something about that turret
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: though I've been hunting with one lately. Rosky they have
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: a PBC I believe it is. It's a bliss. So
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: you send them off all your info, you send them
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: off your bullet, you send them off fps, you send
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: them off your elevation everything, and they send you back
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: a customed turret for your load. Yeah, Vortex does that.
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: You pop it on and it's it's and almost it's
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: like if you have a rifle you're only going to
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: use around home, and you're died in with scope and
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: you're super confident, pop that thing on. You never have
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: to change it and it's always a good Yeah. I
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: had some of those. I liked them, but it was like,
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: it's hard for traveling hunters, you know, because you're changing
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: elevations all the time, you're changing you know a lot
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: of the variables. It's hard when you always have to
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: mess around. You always mess around with different rifles and
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: different loads. If you have one rifle for a specific
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: purpose of specific place, is super easy to do. But
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: the reason that Krooke like, I see your system. It's fine,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: it would work the same way, but now and then
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: you're splitting the difference. You know you're doing. You have
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: two m o A hash marks and you're working with
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: odd numbers, but still be the same thing. I can see.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: I can see either way. I think it's six is
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: short for six and a half. SI made that up.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: I don't have any concluding thoughts personally, Pete Ah, not
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: not much. We've got a lot of snow and I
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: hope we have a good weekend. A hunt in ahead
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: of us. Uh segue off of the live shows you
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: all got coming up and sheep show here in Reno
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: and early February. If you are going to sheep show,
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: certainly go see the live Meat Eater podcast. And also,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: you guys canna have a booth? Yeah? Absolutely? Can people
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: come buy a meet you? Fit you in the backback.
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to meet me or not.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: But have you got a girlfriend right now? Uh? You
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: know it's a loose term, but I'm trying to think
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: of women should go and try to meet Pete? I guess,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: I guess that's the topic. No, I do not have
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: I let me finish my concluded. My concluder was, if
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: you're go on a sheep show, join the Lesson one Club.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: If you've never killed a sheep, if you have never
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: killed a mountain goat, joined the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: has newly founded Billy Goat Society. Remember when your first
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: Mountain Goat hunt from rm g A or when your
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: first sheep hunt from the Wild Sheep Foundation, do you
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: guys be present for the rm g A makes a
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: little more fun? If you what have you killed nanny? Yeah,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: you're out, You're out. Can't join. You had your chances
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: that called the Billy Goat Society. But yes, we have
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: determined if you have killed any mountain goat, billy nanny kid,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: you are out. It's correct. Yeah, if you want to
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: be just a good conservation minded fellow or gal and uh,
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: you know, not be burdened with wondering if you're gonna
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: win a hunt or not. I'd just say give him
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: some money. And those folks like myself that are already
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: in the drawing, well, thank you for it. There you go. Alright, alright, alright, alright,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: thank you for joining
