Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Facing and Overcoming the Dangers of an Opening to Forces of the Vital Plane Without Sufficient Foundation in Peace and Calm in the Being
Transcript
- 0:01There are sound reasons to establish calm, peace and
- 0:04equality in the being as the foundation for the spiritual
- 0:07practice. When an individual takes up some
- 0:10form of concentrated practice to Persia, it can lead to the
- 0:15uprising of powerful energies as well as an influx of thoughts,
- 0:21emotions, feelings and sensations to which the normal
- 0:26human experience is not acclimated.
- 0:30There is a long history in the yogic tradition that speaks
- 0:33about the dangers attended on any attempt to awaken the
- 0:38kundalini energy at the base of the spine.
- 0:41Without adequate guidance and preparation.
- 0:45Such an awakening can lead to nervous disorders, mental
- 0:49imbalance, emotional upsets, and in some cases, physical ill
- 0:54health and various disorders of the body.
- 0:58Similarly, if the energy descends from above, as is
- 1:02frequently reported by practitioners of the Integral
- 1:05Yoga, there can be an imbalance if the being, the body, the
- 1:10vital force, the nerve structure and the mind are not ready to
- 1:14handle that energy. In that case, the energy is
- 1:19subject to being spilled. This is a term used to describe
- 1:23the kind of imbalances historically known to occur in
- 1:27an unprepared individual who opens precipitously and without
- 1:32proper guidance to the powers and energies available when one
- 1:37shifts the awareness away from and outside the protective
- 1:41limits of the physical body. What does the seeker do when he
- 1:46suddenly experiences rushes of energy that increase his vital
- 1:50drives or desires, or which give him a feeling of invulnerability
- 1:56or a sense of his own destiny which leads to arrogance,
- 2:00seeking and exercising of power, and a form of blindness to the
- 2:05excesses and extremes to which he is subjecting himself?
- 2:09There are well known cases of individuals who feel like they
- 2:13are being guided and protected, but who have not discriminated
- 2:16the source of the voices or promptings they are receiving.
- 2:21Without the prior grounding and guidance, it is easy to go
- 2:25astray and cause oneself and others considerable harm.
- 2:31Triorbindo counsels the development of the basis of
- 2:34peace and equanimity to help the seeker avoid falling under the
- 2:39power of the forces which enter and try to commandeer him to
- 2:43their purposes. With the proper foundation, the
- 2:46being can widen and absorb the advent of new knowledge and
- 2:51power without spilling them and thus without the same degree of
- 2:56risk that is associated with a process not grounded in a calm,
- 3:01quiet and observant standpoint, Sriorabindo writes.
- 3:06Quote. At present your experiences are
- 3:11on the mental plane, but that is the right movement.
- 3:15Many sonics are unable to advance because they open the
- 3:18vital plane before the mental and psychic are ready.
- 3:22After some beginning of true spiritual experiences on the
- 3:26mental plane, there is a premature descent into the vital
- 3:30and great confusion and disturbance.
- 3:34This has to be guarded against. It is still worse if the vital
- 3:39desire soul opens to experience before the mind has been touched
- 3:44by the things of the spirit. Aspire always for the mind and
- 3:49psychic being to be filled with the true consciousness and
- 3:52experience and made ready. You must aspire especially for
- 3:57quietness, peace, a calm faith, an increasing steady wideness,
- 4:04for more and more knowledge, for a deep and intense but quiet
- 4:09devotion, to not be troubled by your surroundings and their
- 4:14opposition. These conditions are often
- 4:17imposed at first as a kind of ordeal.
- 4:21If you can remain tranquil and undisturbed and continue your
- 4:25sadhna without allowing yourself to be inwardly troubled under
- 4:29these circumstances, it will help to give you a much needed
- 4:33strength. For the path of yoga is always
- 4:37beset with inner and outer difficulties, and the sodic must
- 4:42develop a quiet, firm and solid strength to meet them.
