Latest / Bucco Territory: A Pittsburgh Pirates Podcast / Lowe and Ozuna's Leadership on Display
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory,
- 0:13Speaker 1: presented to you by the Foul Territory Network. I'm Noah Hiles.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Joining me as always are my co host Josh Harrison
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Platinum Key aka Mark. The Pirates split a four
- 0:23Speaker 1: game series against the Washington Nationals at panc Park. They
- 0:27Speaker 1: win one, they lost one. They won one, they lost one.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Probably could have been a sweep if just a couple
- 0:33Speaker 1: of things went a little better when according to plan,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I should say, and I guess that's where we'll start
- 0:40Speaker 1: this one off. Guys, Like I said, they took two
- 0:43Speaker 1: of four. You look at the loss they had Tuesday evening.
- 0:48Speaker 1: They had a chance to tie the game numerous times.
- 0:51Speaker 1: In the bottom of the seventh a decision was made
- 0:55Speaker 1: there that I'm sure we're gonna review later in this show.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And then in the bottom of the ninth they had
- 1:00Speaker 1: two men on with I believe only one out and
- 1:03Speaker 1: in the top of the order up and they couldn't
- 1:04Speaker 1: get the tying run home. And then and then you
- 1:07Speaker 1: look at Thursday's loss, which just finished about an hour ago.
- 1:11Speaker 1: They were down four to nothing. They battled back, they
- 1:14Speaker 1: took the lead they gave the lead up, they tied
- 1:16Speaker 1: it again, they had the go ahead run on first
- 1:19Speaker 1: in the bottom of the tenth, the tying run on
- 1:21Speaker 1: third base with one out and actually with no outs,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and they couldn't They couldn't even get home the tying run.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So not to say that offense is the problem, not
- 1:32Speaker 1: to say that base running is the problem, not to
- 1:34Speaker 1: say the bullpen's the problem, not to say fielding is
- 1:36Speaker 1: the problem. They're all the problem in those losses. And
- 1:40Speaker 1: it's just two more kind of avoidable losses following a
- 1:44Speaker 1: very avoidable loss on Sunday at Wrigley. So I'll throw
- 1:48Speaker 1: it over to Josh now just to ask, I mean,
- 1:51Speaker 1: what's that say about this team? It Is it just
- 1:54Speaker 1: April baseball? Or is this an alarming trend?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Now?
- 2:00Speaker 3: What it says about the team this team is you
- 2:03Speaker 3: just got to tighten up some things. This team is
- 2:05Speaker 3: obviously shown that it's gonna continue to be, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 3: pretty much in each and every game, obviously without the
- 2:11Speaker 3: outlier games that are blowouts, and in those moments, focus
- 2:16Speaker 3: has to be ultra heightened because as you watch any
- 2:20Speaker 3: game in the postseason, you know, typically it's a minimal
- 2:23Speaker 3: mistake that leads to a physical mistake that could cost
- 2:25Speaker 3: the game. And sometimes you know, you'd much rather just
- 2:28Speaker 3: be a physical mistake that loses the game, whether you
- 2:31Speaker 3: know you boot a ball or you know somebody didn't
- 2:33Speaker 3: you know, pick a ball. But you know, base running
- 2:35Speaker 3: mistakes you're not knowing where to cut and relay is
- 2:39Speaker 3: or picture backing up. These are things that you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: we have seen, you know, kind of like these guys
- 2:44Speaker 3: you know in the rear end early.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Part of the season, you know, some defensive mishaps off
- 2:49Speaker 4: of communication basis. You know, as I.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Said, pictures can deal with, you know, a guy you
- 2:55Speaker 3: know booting the groundball because they know, like this game
- 2:58Speaker 3: is hard. You know you're you're you're gonna catch a
- 3:00Speaker 3: funky hop or you know it's gonna happen. But what
- 3:03Speaker 3: I can't have is, you know, man, you not be
- 3:06Speaker 3: out there and communicate to let my guy know which
- 3:08Speaker 3: base is going to or you know, you upset that
- 3:12Speaker 3: you know you didn't get the runner in last inning
- 3:13Speaker 3: and now you know you've had a mental judge, you know,
- 3:16Speaker 3: mental laps in the field. And not saying that these
- 3:19Speaker 3: guys are having mental lapses, but sometimes in these moments
- 3:22Speaker 3: when you have teams that haven't been in these moments
- 3:25Speaker 3: that it's crunch time. You know, they get a little antsy,
- 3:28Speaker 3: they get a little nervous, and you got to put
- 3:31Speaker 3: that to the side to say, you know what, the
- 3:32Speaker 3: game is still to say, make the routine plays, do
- 3:34Speaker 3: what you're supposed to, and you'll be rewarded. The team that,
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, lose sight of that are teams that the
- 3:40Speaker 3: picture gets a little too big for him and they
- 3:42Speaker 3: start trying to do you know, hit eight run home
- 3:45Speaker 3: runs when hey, you just mentioned it was first and
- 3:47Speaker 3: third with no outs.
- 3:49Speaker 4: At the least make it second and third with one out.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And then you put that you know, manager in a
- 3:53Speaker 3: position and say, okay, do we put this guy on
- 3:56Speaker 3: the you know, try to get a force at every base,
- 3:58Speaker 3: or do we attack this because we all know free
- 4:01Speaker 3: nineties or you know, getting to the next base is
- 4:04Speaker 3: very you know, precious, and especially when you're in those
- 4:07Speaker 3: extra ending games, a.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Pass ball puts you at giving up a run.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So, as you mentioned first and third, you know, these
- 4:15Speaker 3: are just moments where I don't think it's a trend.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Obviously early part of season, you're gonna have some ebbs
- 4:20Speaker 3: and flows. But as you start to get through you
- 4:22Speaker 3: know that first early part of the season, the first
- 4:24Speaker 3: thirty games or so, as you get to that, you
- 4:27Speaker 3: hope to have all those kinks worked out and that
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know all you know, pressure moments that you didn't
- 4:32Speaker 3: feel in the spring training that you've kind of hit.
- 4:35Speaker 5: And although I'll just follow that up and say it's
- 4:39Speaker 5: it's encouraging that this team is having avoidable losses like this.
- 4:44Speaker 5: If you look at uh, the game, just the first
- 4:47Speaker 5: game that they lost against the Nationals, they were down
- 4:49Speaker 5: five to one. Thursday's game, they were down four to nothing.
- 4:54Speaker 5: So they put themselves in the position to win or
- 4:58Speaker 5: to even lose the game where we saw sometimes but
- 5:03Speaker 5: this is a way more competitive team where they're actually
- 5:06Speaker 5: continuing to battle, staying in games. And yeah, we haven't
- 5:10Speaker 5: seen them capitalize on those opportunities yet, where they're still
- 5:14Speaker 5: picking up these losses that good teams avoid, but they're
- 5:18Speaker 5: putting themselves in a position where they're just a couple
- 5:23Speaker 5: mistakes away where they're gonna actually win those games down
- 5:25Speaker 5: the road.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Oh that's the thing, And that's why I guess I'm
- 5:30Speaker 1: a little concerned, is because like these mistakes shouldn't happen
- 5:35Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball. If it was, if it was
- 5:38Speaker 1: just like a pitcher not being you know, in mid
- 5:40Speaker 1: season form or something, that's one thing. But it's just
- 5:43Speaker 1: like a lot of these fielding mistakes, like we knew
- 5:49Speaker 1: this was gonna kind of be the case, and some
- 5:52Speaker 1: of them were coming from guys that we didn't expect them,
- 5:54Speaker 1: like Connor Griffin today on Thursday, Like he caused the
- 5:57Speaker 1: team multiple runs with that mistake. And I mean he's
- 6:00Speaker 1: nineteen years old. He's been playing full short shortstop full
- 6:04Speaker 1: time professionally for like a year now. Yeah, so still
- 6:08Speaker 1: learning for a year. That's but I guarantee.
- 6:11Speaker 4: That's a situation he'll learn from.
- 6:12Speaker 1: To say, you know what, but when you feeld a
- 6:19Speaker 1: team where a nineteen year old rookie is your best shortstop,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you've got to be good enough to overcome those mistakes.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And today they weren't. And that's that's the harsh reality
- 6:29Speaker 1: here is I mean, that's like what we talked about
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the preseason. This offense has to be good enough
- 6:35Speaker 1: to overcome the defense, and overall it has been, but
- 6:40Speaker 1: there have been times now like you just look, if
- 6:43Speaker 1: they were just a little bit more fundamentally sound, they
- 6:47Speaker 1: would be even in a better position.
- 6:49Speaker 5: And four errors that's a one run game.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And that's something that probably doesn't sting as bad right
- 6:56Speaker 1: now because one, like, everyone's just happy the team's playing
- 7:00Speaker 1: because it hasn't played well in so long. But you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: eventually there's going to be a collective team wide slump.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Those happen to every team, including like the Dodgers, And
- 7:11Speaker 1: when that happens, you're gonna think back to these games
- 7:14Speaker 1: where you lost two games at home to the Washington Nationals.
- 7:18Speaker 1: We're probably gonna finish in the last place this year,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and you're gonna you're gonna remember those losses. It's it's
- 7:22Speaker 1: stuff like that when you're when you run into a
- 7:24Speaker 1: rough stretch in the schedule where it's like three first
- 7:27Speaker 1: place teams in a row and your bats aren't going well.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You're thinking, man, like, what are those games that we dropped? Yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's ones like that every yes, and like those happen,
- 7:41Speaker 1: so that's why you gotta win these ones. Now they
- 7:44Speaker 1: all count the same again overall, teams still in a
- 7:48Speaker 1: very favorable position. But and it and like you, yeah,
- 7:53Speaker 1: it's a good thing that they split, like anytime they
- 7:56Speaker 1: split anything. Last year, you like hang a banner, it
- 7:59Speaker 1: seems right, so like now like the expectations are higher.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But with that being said, you have to perform. So
- 8:08Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break and when we get
- 8:10Speaker 1: back some more Solo Zuna Talk.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Kratz. The world has a cord problem, wires everywhere. It's
- 8:18Speaker 6: twenty twenty six and it is time to get a
- 8:22Speaker 6: Ridge wallet.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Five and one. It's not a wallet, it's a charger.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Look at this thing. It sticks to your phone. You
- 8:29Speaker 2: push the button, it charges your phone while you can
- 8:32Speaker 2: charge two different items at the same time. Oh and
- 8:35Speaker 2: don't forget while it's charging. You got a little a
- 8:39Speaker 2: little lean to John that'll help it sit right there.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Appreciate your Ridge wallet.
- 8:43Speaker 6: This is so nice, which is great for me. If
- 8:46Speaker 6: I'm at the airport, I'm watching a game, I can
- 8:48Speaker 6: charge five devices and then I can just watch something
- 8:51Speaker 6: on the phone. Of course, they still have the wallets
- 8:53Speaker 6: that are money too, and we know the code. It's
- 8:54Speaker 6: nice and simple. It's foul foul. One thing to pack.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Five ways to power. You can find Ridge's power bank
- 9:01Speaker 6: at best Buy or our listeners can get ten percent
- 9:04Speaker 6: off at Ridge dot com by using code foul at checkout,
- 9:07Speaker 6: head to Ridge dot com, use code foul and you're
- 9:09Speaker 6: all set. After your purchase, they'll ask you where you
- 9:11Speaker 6: heard about him? Please support FT until him we sent you.
- 9:15Speaker 1: All right. So we've been very critical on this show
- 9:18Speaker 1: of Marcello Zuna in his slow start. We've discussed if
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Pirates would be a better team if he wasn't
- 9:24Speaker 1: in the lineup. He had a great series and highlighted
- 9:27Speaker 1: by I think he had what two multi hit games
- 9:30Speaker 1: in this series? I know you have? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and because he had.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Five hits in four games, so just just two hits today, but.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah, multi hit game the other yeah, so yeah, two
- 9:43Speaker 1: multi hit games this series.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Just one. Sorry I messed it up. You didn't have
- 9:47Speaker 5: two hits today.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Today?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Yeah? Five in the series? Yeah?
- 9:53Speaker 1: All right, So I was wrong, Mark was wrong. Josh
- 9:55Speaker 1: wasn't wrong. It's good for him anyway. Marcelo Zuna had
- 10:01Speaker 1: a really good series, his best of the year by far.
- 10:03Speaker 1: He had five hits. I think he only entered this
- 10:05Speaker 1: series with three on the season, So there you go,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and I know that SATs right. He had his first
- 10:10Speaker 1: home run. It was an absolute moonshot off the left
- 10:13Speaker 1: field rotunda. That's gonna be encouraging because, like we said
- 10:19Speaker 1: so many times, I mean, you can't keep putting him
- 10:22Speaker 1: out there if he's not doing anything offensively because he
- 10:24Speaker 1: hurts your defense. But the fact that this guy's bat's going,
- 10:28Speaker 1: that's probably going to be the big takeaway as a
- 10:31Speaker 1: positive for this series. Connor Griffin also had some nice
- 10:34Speaker 1: hits of this series as well, But Ozuna is the
- 10:37Speaker 1: guy that they need more offensively even than Griffin. Right now, Mark,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'll start with you. I mean, what were your takeaways
- 10:42Speaker 1: from Osuna's performance?
- 10:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll start before his performance, just you mentioned counter Griffin.
- 10:47Speaker 5: We got to see Ozuna's leadership this series where the
- 10:50Speaker 5: broadcast caught Ozuna giving Kinter Griffing a couple tips about
- 10:55Speaker 5: loosening up at the plate. Very next plate appearance for
- 10:58Speaker 5: Conter Griffin, he picked up the single and just gave,
- 11:02Speaker 5: like Ozuna a nice little salute. So I love seeing that.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I love seeing the vibes that he's bringing to the dugout.
- 11:08Speaker 5: He's keeping everyone loose, and I feel like maybe you
- 11:11Speaker 5: can comment on this, Josh, but if that guy that's struggling,
- 11:15Speaker 5: you know, is the one that's saying, hey, let's go.
- 11:18Speaker 5: You know, he's got a custom handshake for every single
- 11:20Speaker 5: person in the dugout and still staying positive and keeping
- 11:23Speaker 5: himself accountable. I feel like that helps as a teammate.
- 11:26Speaker 5: So that impressed me. But just the fact that he
- 11:30Speaker 5: was able to come in the clutch today that home
- 11:33Speaker 5: run when they were down I think they were down
- 11:35Speaker 5: four to one when he hit that. It was three
- 11:36Speaker 5: rbi homer and so to tie the game. You know,
- 11:41Speaker 5: we finally saw him making an impact. You know, this
- 11:44Speaker 5: wasn't just a homer when there. It was like a
- 11:46Speaker 5: seven run game or something. And the Chris Paul memes
- 11:49Speaker 5: are game posted in the comments. You know, this was
- 11:51Speaker 5: a legitimate you know moonshot off the rotunda, which is crazy,
- 11:57Speaker 5: and tied the game. So you have to encourage. Uh,
- 12:01Speaker 5: I'd love to see more than just you know, this
- 12:03Speaker 5: one series before I get too encouraged. But he's off
- 12:07Speaker 5: to a good start nine to sixteen ops in the
- 12:09Speaker 5: series and he uh, oh go.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Ahead, no, no, go ahead, finish your point.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Oh, I was just gonna say, I think he was
- 12:15Speaker 5: batting like three thirteen, Yeah, three thirteen with a nine
- 12:18Speaker 5: to sixteen OPS. So a lot better.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I was. I was just gonna know there, there's not
- 12:23Speaker 1: allowed to be any Chris Paul slander on this podcast,
- 12:26Speaker 1: because that's that's Josh. You're a big CP three guy, right.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Oh hey, he's one of the best point guards that
- 12:32Speaker 4: did it for a long time.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think that's more like the caption of whoever sent
- 12:37Speaker 5: that tweet the Yeah, Chris Paul nails like a huge.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Yeah talking about that, and I didn't want to laugh
- 12:45Speaker 4: in the middle of it.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And the internet is funny. The Internet is funny.
- 12:49Speaker 3: But yeah, no, definitely encouraging. As we've spoken on this,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you know multiple times, you know, you know.
- 12:58Speaker 4: You hit it earlier.
- 12:59Speaker 3: You can't trotting him out there if he's not gonna produce.
- 13:02Speaker 3: But at the same time, you know what you have
- 13:05Speaker 3: in him, and you know the first month there's gonna
- 13:09Speaker 3: be moments where you know, guys are going to go
- 13:11Speaker 3: through their struggles. Some guys go through it earlier, some
- 13:13Speaker 3: guys go through it later, some guys you know, spend
- 13:15Speaker 3: the whole season in it.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Been there, but you know you're hoping that he doesn't
- 13:19Speaker 4: end it there.
- 13:20Speaker 3: But uh, to allude to your point mark when you
- 13:23Speaker 3: were saying that, you know, giving Connor tips, keeping things loose. Yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 3: when when you're struggling. Everybody knows, especially it's no secret
- 13:32Speaker 3: that it's been struggling. But for those other guys that
- 13:35Speaker 3: might be a little hard on themselves or you know, hey, man,
- 13:39Speaker 3: I'm know for three you know, but they got two
- 13:41Speaker 3: hits last night.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Might have to take a step.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Back to be like, you know what, he only got
- 13:45Speaker 3: three hits and you know he's still in here lively.
- 13:48Speaker 3: He's showing up every day. That's that's the mark of
- 13:51Speaker 3: a good teammate. That's the mark of somebody that's showing up,
- 13:54Speaker 3: you know, not just for themselves. Yeah, you know, and
- 13:58Speaker 3: as you said that that goes along way because those
- 14:00Speaker 3: are intangibles that can't be you know, measured. But at
- 14:04Speaker 3: the same time, you see it kind of goes up.
- 14:07Speaker 3: As you said, as next that back gave him the salute.
- 14:10Speaker 3: You know, these are all things that that you need
- 14:12Speaker 3: from leadership, even when things aren't going your way. In
- 14:15Speaker 3: Marcelle's case, you know, at the play, you know, as
- 14:18Speaker 3: you mentioned, still showing up giving information. You know, how
- 14:21Speaker 3: can I might not bring the guy in, but hey,
- 14:23Speaker 3: how can I give a tip? To somebody that I
- 14:25Speaker 3: might you know, see struggling. But sometimes when you do that,
- 14:29Speaker 3: it helps you.
- 14:30Speaker 4: You know, you might like, hey, man, what I just
- 14:32Speaker 4: told him? I need to do the same thing.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:36Speaker 3: And the other thing of it too is, you know
- 14:39Speaker 3: we we sit here and talk about Washington.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Sometimes you just need a different team that that. You
- 14:44Speaker 4: might need a series that gets you hot.
- 14:46Speaker 3: And you know, whether it's the Dodgers, the Nationals, the Yankees,
- 14:49Speaker 3: there's no right or rhyme or reason as to who
- 14:52Speaker 3: it is. Sometimes you just need to seeball, you know,
- 14:55Speaker 3: see the ball, hit some outfield grass, you know, feel
- 14:58Speaker 3: what it's like to touch you know, first base, touch
- 15:00Speaker 3: second base, and you don't care how you get it.
- 15:03Speaker 4: You don't care how to come.
- 15:05Speaker 3: But sometimes you just need like a series like you
- 15:08Speaker 3: just had that sometimes might get you jumped started and
- 15:10Speaker 3: say okay, all right.
- 15:11Speaker 2: And that.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Series like reach base via error, you know, just got
- 15:17Speaker 5: on dates and it was just like, hey, just touch something.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Hey, I've been there before.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I had a couple of over twenty streets and I
- 15:23Speaker 3: remember I get the first base and like first thing
- 15:26Speaker 3: I said, it was, Man, I almost forgot what it was.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Like like actually stand here and like hand.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You just my back and gloves because typically my helmet
- 15:35Speaker 3: machine guards. Yeah, oh I get I get to stand
- 15:38Speaker 3: here and I feel like oh like So sometimes you
- 15:41Speaker 3: just repetition, you know, we're big on that, And when
- 15:44Speaker 3: you haven't been on base for a while, sometimes it
- 15:47Speaker 3: can throw your rhythm of everything off because now you
- 15:50Speaker 3: what can I do to get on there? And now
- 15:51Speaker 3: you're pressing and you might you mishit a pitch and
- 15:54Speaker 3: it's like that was my pitch, you know, and every
- 15:57Speaker 3: little thing gets magnified. So it's nice to see, you know,
- 16:01Speaker 3: a guy who's been there, done that, going through some
- 16:02Speaker 3: struggles still show up and you know, bring it every day.
- 16:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So to round us off, we have our weekly segment,
- 16:10Speaker 1: Jay Hay Now, so Josh, what do you got for us?
- 16:14Speaker 4: Hey?
- 16:14Speaker 3: Now, my segment is actually gonna highlight the whole pinch
- 16:19Speaker 3: hitting for Brandon, loud, situation, bases loaded.
- 16:23Speaker 4: And one way or another.
- 16:26Speaker 3: My my segment is one to talk about how connected
- 16:30Speaker 3: that team is because obviously DK got a lot of
- 16:33Speaker 3: backlash about that decision, one that I certainly didn't agree with,
- 16:37Speaker 3: but that doesn't mean that it doesn't highlight what I
- 16:40Speaker 3: think it's the bigger picture. Brandon Lowey gout that is
- 16:44Speaker 3: a veteran, been around, He's an All star, arguably one
- 16:48Speaker 3: of their hottest hitters right now, gets pinch hit for
- 16:50Speaker 3: in a big situation, bases loaded lefty on lefty and
- 16:55Speaker 3: obviously answers questions to the media.
- 16:58Speaker 4: You know, that's something that's big for the clubhouse, cause
- 17:00Speaker 4: youve got a lot.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Of guys watching and for him, obviously, he has every
- 17:05Speaker 3: right in my mind to be no, I didn't agree
- 17:08Speaker 3: with it, and for all we know, he might not
- 17:10Speaker 3: have agreed with it. But I give a kudos to
- 17:15Speaker 3: Brandon Loud for handle it that way because you know,
- 17:17Speaker 3: obviously I know he had every faith and you know
- 17:21Speaker 3: your to get the job done. But man, I'm like,
- 17:25Speaker 3: don you played just like I did. We both served
- 17:28Speaker 3: the some same role pinch hitting. You know, early part
- 17:30Speaker 3: of your career, throughout your career, pinch hitting is not easy.
- 17:34Speaker 3: But at the same time, the guy that's pinch hitting
- 17:36Speaker 3: is scratching at any opportunity to pinch it. So that's
- 17:39Speaker 3: why when guys get pinch hit for it, they're not
- 17:41Speaker 3: upset because they're like, no, I know, my boy's ready.
- 17:44Speaker 3: But in situations like where that one was arguably your
- 17:49Speaker 3: hottest hitter who had already had a home run off
- 17:51Speaker 3: of Lefty that today, that is my issue. I'm not
- 17:54Speaker 3: disagreeing with the intuition alrighty left the better matchup. But
- 17:59Speaker 3: We've said this, or I've said this in previous episodes
- 18:03Speaker 3: about decisions that get made based off of analytics and
- 18:07Speaker 3: this in numbers where I'm not disagreeing with yes, alright
- 18:11Speaker 3: he left, and yes we talking ball left or right
- 18:14Speaker 3: a little bit more feit we're not having this conversation,
- 18:17Speaker 3: but at the same time we still are because you're like,
- 18:19Speaker 3: you know what, that's the coach, No, don't shoot the.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Three it goes in. Yes, yeah, you know that's that situation.
- 18:25Speaker 3: But one thing that I also said about the connective
- 18:29Speaker 3: is DK didn't back down from his you.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Know, decision, and that's also refreshing too.
- 18:32Speaker 3: You know, that is the other thing why you can
- 18:35Speaker 3: have guys like Brandon Loud come out and say no, hey,
- 18:38Speaker 3: I had every faith because you know, behind those closed
- 18:41Speaker 3: doors they probably talked it out. But at the same time,
- 18:44Speaker 3: when you have a manager who's convicted and you know
- 18:46Speaker 3: his decision, he didn't talk around it. So that right
- 18:49Speaker 3: there will give you the confidence to know, my head
- 18:52Speaker 3: now is just highlighted. Brandon Lyule a tremendous job handling that,
- 18:57Speaker 3: and even DK might not agree with your decision, but
- 19:00Speaker 3: you stood up, you know, for you know, to your
- 19:03Speaker 3: conviction and to me, that is what great managers do,
- 19:07Speaker 3: and not saying a DK is a great manager.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Obviously, Tim will obviously tell with that.
- 19:12Speaker 3: But you know the ones that I've always seen, they
- 19:16Speaker 3: stuck with their gut feel and you know, whether it
- 19:18Speaker 3: was right or wrong. Keep doing that, because that's how
- 19:21Speaker 3: you keep those guys in that clubhouse fighting for you.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I totally agree. I wrote a column
- 19:26Speaker 1: on the same basically reiterating the same thing that ran
- 19:31Speaker 1: today in the Post Gazette. It's just like this is
- 19:33Speaker 1: this is why you go get a player like Brandon Lowell.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Not only I mean you also go get him, go
- 19:39Speaker 1: get back in a basic situation and yeah, against the.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Team he already had already offer left.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, that's also why you go get him.
- 19:49Speaker 1: But you you go get a guy who understands it's like,
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know what, like, regardless of how he actually felt,
- 19:58Speaker 1: if he was short with the media or if he didn't, like, didn't.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Want to talk.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And there are guys that I've covered who have done
- 20:07Speaker 1: that or maybe like like I said, didn't necessarily call
- 20:12Speaker 1: out the manager, but you could tell by their reaction.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Or there are guys that if they didn't want, like,
- 20:17Speaker 1: if it didn't go their way, they would make for
- 20:19Speaker 1: damn sure they were out of that room by the
- 20:22Speaker 1: time of boarders showed up.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Correct, And the next day we'd have to ask him
- 20:29Speaker 1: about it and it would be all awkward and it
- 20:31Speaker 1: would turn us into like the bad guys or whatever.
- 20:34Speaker 1: And that's fine. But Brandon Low made it easy for everyone.
- 20:38Speaker 1: He made it easy for the media, he made it
- 20:40Speaker 1: easy for his manager, he made it easy for Nick York,
- 20:42Speaker 1: He made it easy for everyone else in that clubhouse
- 20:45Speaker 1: by the way he handled that. And that's that's very
- 20:48Speaker 1: valuable to a team that hasn't been in situations where
- 20:52Speaker 1: it really mattered. I mean, you know, if that pinch hit,
- 20:55Speaker 1: it bad happens when they're two to ten on the season,
- 20:59Speaker 1: who cares like you're you know, like you're in last place.
- 21:01Speaker 1: But like the bar, like we said, the bar is higher.
- 21:05Speaker 1: You're trying to win these games matter. It didn't work out.
- 21:09Speaker 1: They lost the game they should have won. But at
- 21:11Speaker 1: least they're all, you know, in lockstep together and that's
- 21:14Speaker 1: that's because Brandon Law got to control the narrative, and
- 21:17Speaker 1: props to him.
- 21:18Speaker 5: And I'll just finish this off by saying, I don't
- 21:21Speaker 5: think any manager is gonna always make the right decision,
- 21:24Speaker 5: but you can at least always make decisions the right way,
- 21:27Speaker 5: and I think we're seeing that from Don Kelly so far.
- 21:30Speaker 5: As much as you want to criticize him, I like
- 21:33Speaker 5: the fact that, like you said, Josh, he's standing behind
- 21:35Speaker 5: his decisions, not backing down from them, and he clearly
- 21:39Speaker 5: has the respect and trust of this clubhouse so far,
- 21:42Speaker 5: when you have a response like that from a guy
- 21:44Speaker 5: who's an all star who's brand new to this team,
- 21:47Speaker 5: so good stuff. All right, anything else on that, guys.
- 21:53Speaker 1: No any final thoughts before we wrap.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Up, beautiful, Just remind everyone you've made it this far.

- 22:17Speaker 5: some hats, everything you could think of, even some new
- 22:21Speaker 5: items here. I really want to get that Fannie pack
- 22:25Speaker 5: that looks pretty sweet. I think that would look awesome
- 22:28Speaker 5: at PNC Park, you know, rocking up with that in
- 22:31Speaker 5: the bucket hat, you know, just go full nineties on them.
- 22:34Speaker 5: I think that would be all the kids would be like, Yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 5: that guy looks pretty cool. Uh maybe that rack conecost him,
- 22:40Speaker 5: who knows. But any final thoughts, I think we're good good.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I just got to give a shout out to my
