- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jason Candle, the UConn Football Coaches Show. Mike
- 0:03Speaker 1: Crispino with you. The Southern Mississippi University football team is
- 0:09Speaker 1: in the Sun Belt. They are 1-1. They had a
- 0:11Speaker 1: crazy game at Auburn, Jason, last weekend. They called the
- 0:15Speaker 1: game just after the second half started because of rain
- 0:18Speaker 1: and heavy weather issues. They got delayed for two hours
- 0:22Speaker 1: at Lightning. They were at Auburn, and they got whipped. So,
- 0:26Speaker 1: But they got to bounce back and they play just
- 0:28Speaker 1: like you do on the same field. Their quarterback, Ethan Hampton,
- 0:31Speaker 1: is pretty impressive guy. 18 of 27 last weekend. He
- 0:36Speaker 1: spent four years at Northern Illinois. I mean, this guy
- 0:39Speaker 1: is a very experienced quarterback. What do you expect to
- 0:41Speaker 1: see from him?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Very veteran guy, as you mentioned. Lots of experience. We
- 0:48Speaker 2: played him when I was at Toledo and he was
- 0:49Speaker 2: a starter at Northern Illinois. You know, good distributor of
- 0:53Speaker 2: the ball. completing a high rate of passes, as you
- 0:56Speaker 2: mentioned before there. And I think that they're starting to
- 0:59Speaker 2: settle in to figure out who he is and putting
- 1:02Speaker 2: plans around him where he can be successful. And I
- 1:04Speaker 2: think that, you know, Coach Anderson's had a long track
- 1:06Speaker 2: record of being a really good offensive coach. And they'll
- 1:10Speaker 2: do a great job putting the quarterback in position where
- 1:12Speaker 2: he can make the throws necessary. So we're going to
- 1:14Speaker 2: find ways to disrupt him. We're going to find ways
- 1:16Speaker 2: to get him off the spot and bother him a
- 1:18Speaker 2: little bit. And, you know, hopefully we can create some
- 1:21Speaker 2: pressure with the front and maybe he'll throw.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Us a couple. Yeah, does that help you, knowing him,
- 1:26Speaker 1: having seen him on the field in person?
- 1:28Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I think I know what to expect. Obviously,
- 1:35Speaker 2: he's had great improvements since those days, and any young
- 1:37Speaker 2: player that's getting early college starts should improve over the
- 1:41Speaker 2: time frame of his college career, and I think he
- 1:43Speaker 2: really has. Then again, I think he's probably settled into
- 1:47Speaker 2: a system that probably fits him, so this is probably
- 1:50Speaker 2: the best version of him that I've seen.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Looking back at Maryland for just a second, putting pressure
- 1:56Speaker 1: on Malik Washington is pretty hard to do. I mean,
- 1:59Speaker 1: last year he was sacked five times. He passed the
- 2:01Speaker 1: ball 500 times or some crazy number. Is that one
- 2:05Speaker 1: of the things that Ryan Manilak is going to have
- 2:07Speaker 1: to figure out this week to try to get some pressure,
- 2:10Speaker 1: not only the front four, maybe some stunts, maybe some blitzes?
- 2:13Speaker 1: I mean, it always seems to come down to if
- 2:16Speaker 1: a quarterback is made uncomfortable, you can really take advantage.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you hit it. I mean, obviously, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: the guy we just played on Saturday has a really
- 2:28Speaker 2: quick delivery. Um, he's very familiar with where I think his,
- 2:32Speaker 2: his protection is a very solid at and where it's not. Um,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and it's very comfortable in year two as a starter
- 2:38Speaker 2: in that system. So, uh, he's only going to continue
- 2:41Speaker 2: to improve as he gets going. And, and really, I
- 2:44Speaker 2: think that's true for everybody, whether that's Caleb Osborne or
- 2:46Speaker 2: Ethan Hampton or whoever you're, you're, you're mentioning. Um, As
- 2:50Speaker 2: it progresses, the guy gets more comfortable, more confident in
- 2:55Speaker 2: his ability to distribute the ball to where it needs
- 2:56Speaker 2: to be. So, yeah, you can blitz, you can stunt,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you can give and present different looks that maybe confuses
- 3:04Speaker 2: that pre-snap operation, which maybe makes it a little bit
- 3:06Speaker 2: harder once the ball is in your hand to be
- 3:08Speaker 2: a little bit of a slower processor. If we can
- 3:11Speaker 2: accomplish that, then we will be able to affect him
- 3:12Speaker 2: and we will be able to have a good game defensively.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Maryland's wideouts, Chris Durr came from Wyoming, and A.R. Gladding,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think ODU, transferred. Boy, those guys were elusive, but
- 3:24Speaker 1: they made some ridiculous catches, didn't they? I mean, come on, one-handed?
- 3:29Speaker 1: I was impressed, and I was 100 yards away from
- 3:32Speaker 1: the field. What did it look like for you?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Well, I think that, you know, yeah, they made them,
- 3:37Speaker 2: and they, you know, TV would show that, but I
- 3:41Speaker 2: think that the underlying thing there, that's even, that's the
- 3:43Speaker 2: real killer is there, those are on third down, right.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And they're third down where you did a good job,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, of forcing the quarterback to move off the
- 3:51Speaker 2: spot a little bit. And, you know, he puts a
- 3:54Speaker 2: really good ball there and the kid makes, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: those guys make a couple of those one-handed catches and,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know, those are, they're deflating really. I mean, you
- 4:01Speaker 2: play good defense and, you know, your guy, their guy
- 4:04Speaker 2: makes a play and your guy doesn't. So, Um, I
- 4:07Speaker 2: still think though, I mean, you still have the responsibility
- 4:10Speaker 2: to play the next play. You got to get off
- 4:11Speaker 2: the mat and go, you know, get them stopped and
- 4:13Speaker 2: do what you have to do there. Uh, cause those
- 4:15Speaker 2: types of plays, when you have, when you play really
- 4:17Speaker 2: good teams, those things are going to happen.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah. We're going to talk to a Ryder Treadway and
- 4:22Speaker 1: a KB on Sherman later in the show, both guys
- 4:24Speaker 1: that play with you at Toledo KB on Sherman had
- 4:27Speaker 1: another good day. I mean, he's had 14 tackles, three
- 4:30Speaker 1: for tackle for losses in first couple of games. Um,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you've seen him, you had him last year and now
- 4:36Speaker 1: you see him here. What do you, how do you
- 4:38Speaker 1: view his development as a player? Cause we were talking
- 4:41Speaker 1: about him playing at Hutchinson community college, uh, and eventually
- 4:44Speaker 1: getting to Toledo and eventually coming here with you to UConn.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I mean, he's had quite a journey, that guy. Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I mean, he's a, he's a throwback football player that,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you know, he looks the part, he goes out and
- 4:56Speaker 2: plays the game the way it's supposed to be played.
- 4:58Speaker 2: He's very physical and does a really good job. you know,
- 5:01Speaker 2: in the, in the blitzing, in the blitz game for us. And,
- 5:05Speaker 2: you know, he's got the ability to cover the back
- 5:07Speaker 2: out of the backfield. He's a complete player and a
- 5:09Speaker 2: guy that's a real emotional energy lifter for our team.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, and a guy that I think has really
- 5:16Speaker 2: earned the right and done it the hard way going
- 5:18Speaker 2: through the junior college ranks and then, you know, finds
- 5:20Speaker 2: his way to Toledo and now here and just really
- 5:24Speaker 2: earned everything he's gotten in football. I've got a great
- 5:26Speaker 2: mom at home who, you know, raised him the right
- 5:28Speaker 2: way and, um, you know, it's good to see him
- 5:31Speaker 2: having the success that he's had.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And both guys are from Texas, Roger Treadway. We'll talk
- 5:35Speaker 1: to him. He's a Dallas Cowboy fan. We're going to,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we're going to ride them on this one because the
- 5:39Speaker 1: Giants finally beat the Cowboys for once. Uh, and therefore
- 5:43Speaker 1: we're all wearing our New York Giants hats around today. Uh,
- 5:47Speaker 1: do you watch the pro game at all? That's my question.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean, you're, you're sitting there last night. That was
- 5:51Speaker 1: a late game. I'm thinking maybe you watched a little
- 5:54Speaker 1: of that.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Uh, I didn't have, I didn't get any of that
- 5:57Speaker 2: last night. Um, Sundays are tough, you know, and obviously we,
- 6:01Speaker 2: we've got, I don't have a team that I really
- 6:03Speaker 2: follow other than, I mean, you know, you Giants fans
- 6:05Speaker 2: aren't going to want to hear this, but I follow
- 6:07Speaker 2: the Eagles. My college roommate was Nick Sirianni. So I
- 6:10Speaker 2: got to, I got to root for my friends. And
- 6:13Speaker 2: then other than that, after, if I don't, if I
- 6:15Speaker 2: get a chance to just pay attention to what, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: we've got Quinion Mitchell there as well. So it's, that
- 6:19Speaker 2: one's a, that's an easy one to pull forward. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: we just have other guys that are on other teams.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So you just kind of check the box scores there
- 6:26Speaker 2: and make sure your guys are doing what they need
- 6:27Speaker 2: to do that way. And, check in on them, but
- 6:29Speaker 2: I don't get a chance to watch many, many NFL games.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Well, you missed a good one last night. And Nick Sirianni,
- 6:35Speaker 1: by the way, now that we know he's your college roommate,
- 6:38Speaker 1: that guy's record as a Eagle head coach is like
- 6:41Speaker 1: very impressive numbers wise. I don't know why anybody complains
- 6:43Speaker 1: about him. Maybe I haven't listened to too many Philadelphia people.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I mean, honestly.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Hey, winning speaks for itself. I mean, they don't, they
- 6:52Speaker 2: don't give any, there's not any asterisks next to wins
- 6:54Speaker 2: and losses. That's not how you win. It's just, if
- 6:56Speaker 2: you do it right. So, he's had a fantastic start
- 6:59Speaker 2: to his career. He's a really good leader of people,
- 7:03Speaker 2: you know, really happy for him and the success that
- 7:05Speaker 2: he's had. And I know there's much more still in
- 7:07Speaker 2: the tank for that, for that team. And, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 2: I know that he'll have them at their best this
- 7:11Speaker 2: year and for years to come.
- 7:13Speaker 1: He's got a QB that just wins to Jalen Hurts
- 7:15Speaker 1: and they complain about him, but that's Eagles fans coach.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's Eagles fans. All right. We're back with Jason candle.
- 7:21Speaker 1: We'll wrap it up. One more segment with him in
- 7:23Speaker 1: a moment on Learfield.
