- 0:01We are on a journey pursuing a divine romance
- 0:06with Jesus Christ. What are some of the things that
- 0:10get in the way of that? Today we're going to look at that as
- 0:13we unpack Galatians chapter 2.
- 0:17Paul is addressing the spirit of legalism
- 0:21head-on. What is legalism?
- 0:25How does legalism impact our heart
- 0:29and love relationship with Jesus Christ?
- 0:33If we have fallen into legalism, how do we get
- 0:36out of that trap? Listen in as
- 0:40we continue our journey pursuing intimacy with
- 0:44Jesus Christ. Welcome to the Daily Audio
- 0:48Torah. Today is September 15th. Now let's continue our
- 0:53journey reading through the entire Bible in 1 year. This week
- 0:57we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament and for the
- 1:01New Testament.
- 1:04Deuteronomy 27:11-26.
- 1:15That same day Moses also gave this charge to the people: When you
- 1:18cross the Jordan River, the tribes of Simeon, Levi,
- 1:22Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin must stand
- 1:26on Mount Gerizim to proclaim a blessing over the people.
- 1:30And the tribes of Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan,
- 1:33and Naphtali must stand on Mount Ebal to proclaim a curse.
- 1:38Then the Levites will shout to all the people of
- 1:41Israel, cursed is anyone who carves, or casts
- 1:46an idol and secretly sets it up. These idols,
- 1:49the work of craftsmen, are detestable to the Lord.
- 1:53And all the people will reply, Amen.
- 1:57Cursed is anyone who dishonors father or mother.
- 2:01And all the people will reply,
- 2:04Amen. Cursed is anyone who steals
- 2:07property from a neighbor by moving a boundary marker.
- 2:11And all the people will reply, Amen.
- 2:15Cursed is anyone who leads a blind person astray
- 2:18on the road. And all the people will reply,
- 2:22Amen. Cursed is anyone who denies
- 2:26justice to foreigners, orphans, or widows. And all
- 2:29the people will reply, Amen.
- 2:33Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with
- 2:37one of his father's wives, for he has violated his father.
- 2:42And all the people will reply, Amen.
- 2:46Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with an animal.
- 2:51And all the people will reply, Amen.
- 2:55Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse with his
- 2:58sister, whether she is the daughter of his father or his
- 3:02mother. And all the people will reply,
- 3:06Amen. Cursed is anyone who has sexual intercourse
- 3:10with his mother-in-law. And all the people will reply,
- 3:14Amen. Cursed is anyone who attacks
- 3:18a neighbor in secret. And all the people will reply,
- 3:22Amen. Cursed is anyone who
- 3:26accepts payment to kill an innocent person. And all the
- 3:30people will reply, Amen.
- 3:33Cursed is anyone who does not affirm or obey the
- 3:37terms of these instructions. And all the people will reply,
- 3:42Amen. Isaiah 19:1-21:17.
- 3:48This message came to me, Isaiah, concerning Egypt.
- 3:54Look, the Lord is advancing against Egypt. Riding on
- 3:58a swift cloud. The idols of Egypt tremble. The hearts
- 4:02of the Egyptians melt with fear. I will make the Egyptians fight
- 4:07against each other, brother against brother, neighbor against
- 4:10neighbor, city against city, province against province.
- 4:15The Egyptians will lose heart and I will confuse their plans.
- 4:18They will plead with their idols for wisdom.
- 4:21They will call on spirits, mediums, and psychics to show them
- 4:25which way to turn. I will hand Egypt over to a hard,
- 4:29cruel master, to a fierce king,
- 4:32says the Lord, the Lord Almighty. The waters of the
- 4:36Nile will fail to rise and flood the fields. The riverbed
- 4:40will be parched and dry. The canals of the Nile will dry up,
- 4:45and the streams of Egypt will become foul with rotting
- 4:48reeds and rushes. All the greenery along
- 4:51the riverbank will wither and blow away. All the
- 4:55crops will dry up and everything will die. The fishermen
- 4:59will weep for lack of work. Those who fish with hooks and
- 5:03those who use nets will all be unemployed. The weavers
- 5:06will have no flax or cotton, for the crops will fail.
- 5:10The weavers and all the workers will be sick at heart.
- 5:14What fools are the counselors of Zoan!
- 5:18Their best counsel to the king of Egypt is stupid and wrong.
- 5:22Will they still boast of their wisdom? Will they dare tell
- 5:25Pharaoh about their long line of wise ancestors?
- 5:29What has happened to your wise counselors, Pharaoh? If they are
- 5:33so wise, let them tell you what the Lord Almighty is going to
- 5:37do to Egypt. The wise men
- 5:41from Zoan are fools and those from Memphis are deluded.
- 5:45The leaders of Egypt have ruined the land with their foolish counsel.
- 5:50The Lord has sent a spirit of foolishness on them, so all their
- 5:54suggestions are wrong. They cause the land of Egypt
- 5:58to stagger like a sick drunkard. Nobody in Egypt, whether rich
- 6:01or poor, important or unknown, can offer any help.
- 6:06In that day, the Egyptians will be as weak as women.
- 6:10They will cower in fear beneath the upraised fist of the Lord Almighty.
- 6:14Just to speak the name of Israel will strike deep terror in their
- 6:19hearts, for the Lord Almighty has laid out His plans against them.
- 6:23In that day, 5 of Egypt's cities will follow the Lord Almighty.
- 6:28They will even begin to speak the Hebrew language. One of these
- 6:31will be Heliopolis, the City of the Sun.
- 6:35In that day, there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of
- 6:39Egypt, and there will be a monument to the Lord at its
- 6:43border. It will be a sign and a witness to the Lord Almighty in
- 6:47the land of Egypt. When the people cry to the Lord
- 6:51for help against those who oppress them, He will send them a
- 6:54Savior who will rescue them. In that day,
- 6:58the Lord will make Himself known to the Egyptians. Yes,
- 7:03they will know the Lord and will give their sacrifices and offerings
- 7:06to Him. They will make promises to the Lord
- 7:10and keep them. The Lord will strike Egypt in a way that will bring
- 7:13healing. For the Egyptians will turn to the Lord,
- 7:17and He will listen to their pleas and heal them.
- 7:20In that day, Egypt and Assyria will be connected
- 7:24by a highway. The Egyptians and Assyrians will
- 7:28move freely between their lands, and they will worship the same God.
- 7:32And Israel will be their ally. The 3
- 7:37will be together, and Israel will be blessing to them.
- 7:41For the Lord Almighty will say, Blessed be Egypt,
- 7:44my people! Blessed be Assyria, the land I
- 7:48have made! Blessed be Israel, my special
- 7:51possession!
- 7:55In the year when King Sargon of Assyria captured the
- 7:59Philistine city of Ashdod, the Lord told Isaiah
- 8:03son of Amoz, Take off all your clothes, including your sandals. Isaiah did
- 8:07as he was told and walked around naked and barefoot.
- 8:12Then the Lord said, my servant Isaiah has been walking around naked
- 8:17and barefoot for the last 3 years. This is
- 8:20a sign, a symbol of the terrible
- 8:24troubles I will bring upon Egypt and Ethiopia.
- 8:29For the king of Assyria will take away the Egyptians and Ethiopians
- 8:34as prisoners. He will make them walk naked and barefoot,
- 8:37both young and old, their buttocks uncovered,
- 8:41to the shame of Egypt. How dismayed will be the Philistines
- 8:45who counted on the power of Ethiopia and boasted of
- 8:48their allies in Egypt! They will say, if this can happen to Egypt,
- 8:53what chance do we have? For we counted on Egypt
- 8:57to protect us from the king of Assyria. This message
- 9:01came to me concerning the land of Babylon.
- 9:04Disaster is roaring down on you from the desert,
- 9:08like a whirlwind sweeping in from the Negev.
- 9:12I see an awesome vision. I see you plundered and
- 9:16destroyed. Go ahead, you Elamites and Medes,
- 9:20take part in the siege. Babylon will fall,
- 9:23and the groaning of all the nations she enslaved will end.
- 9:27My stomach aches and burns with pain. Sharp Pangs
- 9:31of horror are upon me, like the pangs of a woman giving birth.
- 9:36I grow faint when I hear what God is planning. I am
- 9:40blinded with dismay. My mind reels,
- 9:43my heart races. The sleep I once enjoyed at
- 9:47night is now a faint memory. I lie awake,
- 9:50trembling. Look! They are preparing a great feast.
- 9:55They are spreading rugs for people to sit on. Everyone is eating
- 9:59and drinking. Quick! Grab your shields and prepare for battle.
- 10:03You are being attacked! Meanwhile, the Lord said to me,
- 10:07Put a watchman on the city wall to shout out what he
- 10:10sees. Tell him to sound the alert when he sees chariots drawn
- 10:15by horses and warriors mounted on donkeys and camels.
- 10:19Then the watchman called out, Day after day I have stood on the watchtower,
- 10:23my lord. Night after night I have remained at my post.
- 10:27Now at last, look! Here come the chariots
- 10:31and warriors! Then the watchman said, Babylon is fallen!
- 10:35All the idols of Babylon lie broken on the ground!
- 10:39O my people, threshed and winnowed, I have told you everything
- 10:42the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, has said. This message
- 10:46came to me concerning Edom.
- 10:50Someone from Edom keeps calling to me, Watchman, how much longer
- 10:54until morning? When will the night be over? The watchman replies,
- 10:58Morning is coming, but night will soon follow. If you wish to
- 11:02ask again, then come back and ask. This message
- 11:06came to me concerning Arabia. O caravans
- 11:10from Dedan, hide in the deserts of Arabia.
- 11:13O people of Tema, bring food and water to these weary
- 11:17refugees. They have fled from drawn swords and sharp
- 11:22arrows and the terrors of war. But within a year, says the Lord,
- 11:26all the glory of Kedar will come to an end.
- 11:30Only a few of its courageous archers will survive. I,
- 11:34the Lord, the God of Israel, have spoken.
- 11:43Galatians 2:1-16.
- 11:48Then 14 years later I, Paul, went back to Jerusalem
- 11:53again, this time with Barnabas. And Titus came along too.
- 11:57I went there because God revealed to me that I should go.
- 12:00While I was there, I talked privately with the leaders of the church.
- 12:04I wanted them to understand what I had been preaching to the Gentiles.
- 12:08I wanted to make sure they did not disagree or my ministry would
- 12:12have been useless. And they didn't— they did agree.
- 12:16They did not even demand that my companion Titus
- 12:20be circumcised, though he was a Gentile.
- 12:24Even that question wouldn't have come up except for some so-called
- 12:28Christians there— false ones, really— who came to
- 12:32spy on us and see our freedom in Jesus Christ. They wanted
- 12:36to force us, like slaves, to follow their Jewish regulations.
- 12:41But we refused to listen to them for a single moment.
- 12:45We wanted to preserve the truth of the Good News.
- 12:49For you. And the leaders of the church who were there had nothing
- 12:53to add to what I was preaching. By the way,
- 12:57their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me,
- 13:01for God has no favorites. They saw that God had
- 13:04given me the responsibility of preaching the good news to the Gentiles,
- 13:09just as he had given Peter the responsibility of preaching
- 13:13to the Jews. For the same God who worked through Peter
- 13:17for the benefit of the Jews worked through me for the benefit
- 13:21of the Gentiles. In fact, James, Peter, and John,
- 13:25who were known as pillars of the church, recognized the
- 13:29gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their coworkers.
- 13:34They encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles while
- 13:38they continued their work with the Jews. The only thing they suggested was
- 13:42that we remember to help the poor, and I have certainly been
- 13:46eager to do that. But when Peter came to Antioch, I had
- 13:50to oppose him publicly, speaking strongly against
- 13:54what he was doing, for it was very wrong.
- 13:58When he first arrived, he ate with the Gentile Christians
- 14:02who don't bother with circumcision. But afterward,
- 14:06When some Jewish friends of James came, Peter wouldn't eat
- 14:10with the Gentiles anymore because he was afraid of what these
- 14:13legalists would say.
- 14:18Then the other Jewish Christians followed Peter's
- 14:21hypocrisy, and even Barnabas was influenced
- 14:25to join them in their hypocrisy. When I saw that they
- 14:29were not following the truth of the Good News, I said
- 14:32to Peter in front of all the others, Since you,
- 14:36a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are
- 14:40living like a Gentile, why are you trying to make
- 14:44these Gentiles obey the Jewish laws you abandoned?
- 14:47You and I are Jews by birth, not sinners
- 14:51like the Gentiles. And yet, we Jewish Christians
- 14:55know that we become right with God not by doing
- 14:58what the Law commands, but by faith in Jesus
- 15:02Christ. So we have believed in Christ Jesus
- 15:06that we might be accepted by God because of our faith in Christ
- 15:11and not because we have obeyed the Law.
- 15:17For no one will ever be saved by
- 15:20obeying the Law.
- 15:27Psalm 59:1-17.
- 15:32Rescue me from my enemies, O God! Protect me from those who have
- 15:36come to destroy me! Rescue me from these criminals!
- 15:40Save me from these murderers! They have
- 15:44set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there
- 15:47waiting, though I have done them no wrong, O Lord.
- 15:51Despite my innocence, they prepare to kill me.
- 15:54Rise up and help me! Look on my plight!
- 15:58O Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, rise up to
- 16:02punish hostile nations. Show no mercy to
- 16:06wicked traitors. They come at night, snarling like vicious
- 16:10dogs as they prowl the streets. Listen to the filth that
- 16:13comes from their mouths, the piercing swords that fly from their
- 16:17lips. Who can hurt us? they sneer. But Lord, You laugh
- 16:21at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. You are my strength.
- 16:25I wait for You to rescue me. For You, O God,
- 16:29are my place of safety. In His unfailing
- 16:33love, my God will come and help me. He will let me
- 16:37look down in triumph on all my enemies.
- 16:40Don't kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons.
- 16:44Stagger them with Your power and bring them to their knees.
- 16:48O Lord, our shield! Because of the sinful things
- 16:51they say, because of the evil that is on their lips,
- 16:55let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their
- 16:59lies. Destroy them in Your anger. Wipe them out completely.
- 17:03Then the whole world will know that God reigns in
- 17:07Israel. My enemies come out at night,
- 17:10snarling like vicious dogs. As they prowl the
- 17:14streets, they scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied.
- 17:19But as for me, I will sing about Your power. I will shout
- 17:23with joy each morning because of Your unfailing love.
- 17:27For You have been my refuge, a place of safety in
- 17:31the day of distress. O my Strength, to You I
- 17:34sing praises. For You, O God, are my refuge,
- 17:38the God who shows me unfailing love.
- 17:45Proverbs 23:13-14.
- 17:49Don't fail to correct your children. They won't
- 17:53die if you spank them. Physical discipline may well
- 17:57save them from death. I'd like to speak to you today from our
- 18:01reading from Galatians chapter 2, and Paul is
- 18:06railing against and pushing back against a
- 18:10spirit of hypocrisy and also legalism.
- 18:13So the ancient Jewish religion,
- 18:17which carried forward even all the way to today, they have
- 18:21the oral law, and that's separate or different
- 18:25from the written scriptures that we read from the Old Testament.
- 18:28The oral law is supposedly more
- 18:32of revelation of what Moses got from God at
- 18:36Mount Sinai. But this oral law, which they later wrote it all down,
- 18:39the Talmud, the Mishnah, all of that. A lot of it is
- 18:42just religious edicts coming from the mind
- 18:47and the heart of man, and it actually violates Scripture.
- 18:52And Jesus had strong words. He gave a lot of strong pushback
- 18:56against the Pharisees who were very legalistic
- 19:00in their approach. So one of the
- 19:04oral law traditions was that if you were Jewish, you could
- 19:07not have table fellowship with a Gentile. You could not invite
- 19:12them into your home and have a meal with them because they were pagans,
- 19:16they were uncircumcised, and it was against the oral law
- 19:21or the tradition of man for Jews to open up
- 19:25their home for table fellowship to the Gentiles. But then, of course,
- 19:29Peter had his vision with the sheet coming
- 19:32down from heaven with all kinds of unclean animals and 3
- 19:36times that he saw this vision and he
- 19:40heard the voice of God saying, arise, Peter, kill and eat.
- 19:44And this was not about food. This was about that
- 19:48the Gentiles were viewed as unclean.
- 19:52And very— the very next— after the vision was over,
- 19:563 men came to him and brought him to the house of Cornelius.
- 20:00And all of a sudden now the Gentiles are getting saved. They're getting filled with
- 20:04the Holy Spirit. And so basically, Paul understood
- 20:08that this gospel now is not just for the Jewish people, but it's for all
- 20:12people, and that they could have table fellowship
- 20:17with Gentiles. And so he's railing and pushing back against
- 20:21Peter because Peter would go to the home of a Gentile and have a meal
- 20:25with him or her, but then as soon
- 20:29as the Jews came into town, he stopped having
- 20:33fellowship with the Gentiles in their home and having meals with them.
- 20:38Peter would not eat with the Gentiles anymore because he was afraid of
- 20:42what these legalists would say.
- 20:47So this spirit of legalism leads to hypocrisy.
- 20:51Legalism is following the rule book,
- 20:55doing it mechanically, by rote,
- 20:59by ritual, and there's no heart relationship.
- 21:05It excludes.
- 21:08It tends to be judgmental.
- 21:12I'm better than you. I'm more spiritual than you. I'm more holy than
- 21:15you. And the letter of
- 21:19the law kills, but the spirit of the law brings life.
- 21:25So how do we combat this spirit of legalism
- 21:29that Paul is addressing in the book of Galatians?
- 21:35I want to share with you a chapter from a wonderful, wonderful book.
- 21:39It's a classic. It's written by Jean Edwards. It's called The Divine
- 21:44Romance, and this would be chapter
- 21:4817. And this chapter really captures
- 21:53the essence of what it really means to have intimacy with
- 21:57Jesus Christ. We get lost and we go off
- 22:00in rabbit trails in our pursuit of Christ and
- 22:04trying to follow Him, and we go down dead
- 22:08ends. And this really shows you what the one true pathway
- 22:12is for intimacy with Jesus Christ.
- 22:16This shows you what it's not, and what it is.
- 22:20Chapter 17 from The Divine Romance. As the great
- 22:24throng broke up, the words of Moses still ringing in
- 22:28ears and hearts, the people returned thoughtfully
- 22:31to their tents. So quick background, this is right
- 22:35after the law has been given. Moses came down from the mountain, from Mount
- 22:38Sinai, and shared the Ten Commandments with the people. And now the people
- 22:43are returning to their tents and pondering and reflecting on what they have heard.
- 22:48And as they gathered in those dwellings, they shared their hearts.
- 22:52Among one family of the tribe of Levi, there occurred this conversation:
- 22:56Oh Father, I do love him. I wish to serve him.
- 23:00This very day I shall speak with Aaron. I wish to devote my
- 23:04whole life to serving our wonderful Lord, his dwelling, and his
- 23:08people. A short distance away, a wife
- 23:12turned to her husband, searching his face for a moment and
- 23:15then spoke her heart. Oh husband, in Egypt ours
- 23:20was a lot far easier than most of our countrymen,
- 23:23and the gifts given to us upon our departure were no small things for either
- 23:27slave or free. I see in your eyes that your thoughts are mine.
- 23:32Our God is so gracious, so kind, and we do love him with all our
- 23:36hearts. All that we have of silver and gold,
- 23:39let us give. To Him?
- 23:42Quick and eager was the husband's response: Yes!
- 23:46With the heart of love, let us give Him such as we have.
- 23:50And in another tribe, far distant from the Levites, a group
- 23:55of fervent young men spoke in grave and measured words: It is agreed.
- 23:59Today, here and now, we make a solemn vow to our Lord and
- 24:03to one another. We will forever obey the Voice. Of our
- 24:07God. What He speaks we will do, always.
- 24:11Whatever He asks, be it a small thing or be it our
- 24:14very lives, we will obey the voice of the Lord.
- 24:18If He speaks in the silent places of our hearts or
- 24:21in the hearing of our ears, or be it to Moses that He should speak,
- 24:26His demand shall instantly be our will, as long
- 24:30as breath is in us. 'Tis not enough,
- 24:33broke in another, prayer. Let us covenant to pray,
- 24:37to be men of prayer upon our knees seeking His face, allowing Him
- 24:41to search our hearts, yes, and asking
- 24:45for power to do His will in hours of need and crisis.
- 24:49As they spoke of these things, an elder of the tribe rushed
- 24:52by hurriedly seeking out the other leaders of his
- 24:56tribe. Having found them, he spoke in fervent terms.
- 25:00This we must do. Tomorrow let our tribe assemble.
- 25:04Let us come with our cymbals and trumpets. Behold, here in my
- 25:08hand already a song has been written by one
- 25:11of our youth. It is a psalm exhorting us to extol the
- 25:15ways of our God. Let us take this song and other psalms
- 25:18of praise. Let us render them unto our Lord and
- 25:22fall down upon our faces and worship him together eagerly.
- 25:26The elders agreed, Surely there is no better way
- 25:30to show our love for our God than to pour out our worship before Him.
- 25:35By nightfall, the great rock upon which Moses had spoken
- 25:40was vacant except for one lone figure.
- 25:44Unobserved by all, he had been there listening,
- 25:47listening to Moses recount to the people his very own message
- 25:51to them. Afterward, he had walked among his people
- 25:55listening intently to their every
- 25:58word. A deep sadness now disturbed the
- 26:02face of the Lord, for he was contemplating the response he had heard
- 26:06from his people. A long, deep groan
- 26:11of sorrow, unheard by human ears but shattering the
- 26:15tranquility of the entire heavenly host, rose up from his depths.
- 26:21I did not require of you your wealth,
- 26:24nor coins of gold. What need have I of these?
- 26:28I did not ask of you that you serve me.
- 26:31Do I, the Mighty One, need to be waited upon?
- 26:36Neither did I ask of you your worship, nor your prayers,
- 26:40nor even your obedience.
- 26:43He paused. Once more a long mournful
- 26:47groan rose from his breast.
- 26:52I have asked but this of you, that you love me,
- 26:57love me, love me.
- 27:04That's chapter 17 from The Divine Romance.
- 27:08I want to close now with a prayer from a

- 27:22and then an actual prayer.
- 27:25In the words of Wigglesworth,
- 27:29let us repent of everything that is hindering us. Let us give place
- 27:33to God. Let us have no self-righteousness,
- 27:37but let us have brokenness humbleness, and submittedness.
- 27:43The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to
- 27:47preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal
- 27:51the brokenhearted. Luke 4:18.
- 27:55Losing self in Him.
- 27:58Lord, break my heart with Your love.
- 28:02I repent of being unloving.
- 28:06Lord, break my heart with Your righteousness.
- 28:11I repent of self-righteousness.
- 28:14Lord, break my heart with Your humility.
- 28:19I repent of my pride.
- 28:22Lord, break my heart with Your submission.
- 28:27I repent of my rebellion.
- 28:30Thus broken, Then mend my heart,
- 28:34O thou healer of the brokenhearted.
