- 0:23None. A hamster with a blunt.
- 0:34Penknife. We're doing quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Hello, and welcome to Hamster with Blunt.
- 0:42Penknife on tour in London with my special celebrity guest, Mr.
- 0:47Simon Hart. Hello.
- 0:48Hello. Well, how are you doing today?
- 0:49All right, look. We're in Saint James's Park.
- 0:51We are, which is a lovely bit of breakfast.
- 0:53We have, which was that lunchtime.
- 0:57Well, could you, would you care to tell the listeners why we are
- 0:59here in London today? Well, a, we're having a nice day
- 1:02out together, but B we should be invited to the premiere of the
- 1:07Doctor Who Christmas special. Unbelievable.
- 1:10We didn't. Say that we refused to be those
- 1:13smug assholes. We've seen it and you haven't,
- 1:17because I've seen a bit of that going on this last couple of
- 1:19weeks. So we aren't going to be like
- 1:20that, are we? No, no.
- 1:22In fact, I wondered if you were even going to mention it then
- 1:23when I just said that. Oh no, I was.
- 1:26I'm very excited. Now this is obviously the 4th
- 1:30special. Yes, that we've had.
- 1:32Well, technically, no. It's the Well.
- 1:34God, how many traded? Which ones were either?
- 1:36The Daleks. Legend of the Sea Devils Power
- 1:39of the So this is #7. OK, well look, let's wind back
- 1:42time a little bit then to evil dialects.
- 1:45Yes, because I'm going to stop off in various parts of London
- 1:48and get your opinion on these stories leading up to this.
- 1:51One OK, so Eva the Dialects is my favorite Jodi story.
- 1:54Ever. Ever of all them all.
- 1:56I just think it was brilliant. It was really contained.
- 2:00It was clever, It was funny, it was moving.
- 2:05And yeah, I I just thought it was really smart and just peak
- 2:11Chip nor Dalek story, because he's really good at Dalek
- 2:14stories and he doesn't get enough kudos for that.
- 2:16And that was just brilliant and clever.
- 2:18It was a bit of a finger in the eye to people that said he
- 2:20couldn't do character. Exactly, because he could.
- 2:22You had that brilliant character Sarah, as made by.
- 2:26Ashlyn Bean. Thank you.
- 2:27Oh, she wasn't. She was really great, yeah.
- 2:30And the lines will be closed at midnight.
- 2:33No, they won't, Mummy. And but also we had the sort of
- 2:39Doctor Yaz. Yeah, we've.
- 2:41Been going on and Dan? Woken up where?
- 2:43She says I I've never felt like this.
- 2:45Another woman. I don't know what I'm feeling.
- 2:47Exactly. So yeah, So that was that
- 2:50brilliant story. And really, unexpectedly
- 2:53brilliant. So that's our first special.
- 2:55The second one, then, is the the much celebrated legend of the
- 2:59Seed of All. Well, it's just a mess, isn't
- 3:01it? But I.
- 3:04Look what say what you really think.
- 3:06But there are some really good bits in it.
- 3:09I haven't actually seen it for quite a while.
- 3:12Now re watched it and if I'm honest.
- 3:14Yeah, and that That's quite telling.
- 3:18So I've rewatched Power of the Doctor.
- 3:19About 50, so I think it was just a bit of a mess, but I think it
- 3:24was a mess because of making it during COVID, having to things
- 3:30fall apart around them unexpectedly.
- 3:33And I don't think it all quite came together how it should have
- 3:35how they planned it to. But it was good.
- 3:38Yeah, the Sea Devils looked brilliant and they were really
- 3:40nicely done. Finally, I could say to my uncle
- 3:43who ever since the BBC Two repeat in the 1990s, mocked
- 3:47Doctor Who the monsters where the eyes don't move.
- 3:50Well now I can say fuck you Uncle Brian, the eyes are
- 3:52moving. They've got CGI eyes now.
- 3:54Sorry Uncle Brian, I didn't mean say fuck.
- 3:57You in case. Yes, you're listening.
- 4:00But you know, again some of it is a fan expectation and and
- 4:06Toby Haydock's brilliant anticipointments where everyone
- 4:11got so excited by seeing the Sea Devils back in the in the
- 4:14previous trailer that they built it up into something it was
- 4:17never going to be. And maybe in a few years time it
- 4:21will be slightly re evaluated and people will say wasn't that
- 4:26bad. Sly, Fraser said.
- 4:27Isn't it? Of course you have to get in
- 4:29here somewhere. Of course.
- 4:30You put the word special in and people expect something special.
- 4:34Exactly. Whereas actually this is just
- 4:35Doctor Who. It just special basically means
- 4:37something different from the norm.
- 4:39Yeah. And this is just a bit longer.
- 4:41Yeah, exactly. Also, I did love the bit under
- 4:44the sea. Yeah, that was.
- 4:45Beautiful, wasn't it? That was great.
- 4:47Yeah, Well. The fish going around it
- 4:49gorgeous. OK, well, look, we'll skip very
- 4:52briefly over Power of the Doctor.
- 4:53We did a three hours on that. Did you like it?
- 4:57Yeah, I loved it. Of course I loved it.
- 4:59Can I say something a little controversial?
- 5:01Yeah, I don't think we've seen a special in RTD Two.
- 5:06Yeah, that has looked as expensive as.
- 5:08Paramodopter. Nothing has looked quite as good
- 5:11as that train sequence at the star or or the Clorox on the
- 5:16planet and. That gorgeous ballroom, yeah.
- 5:20Exactly you. Know pulls off his regeneration
- 5:22tricks. In so and however brilliant all
- 5:26these specials have been directed, I think Jamie Magnus
- 5:29Stone is better than all of them.
- 5:31Oh, interesting. He's a great director.
- 5:33He is a. Great director, I think, and I
- 5:35hope they'll get him back at some point.
- 5:38Well, this is our 5 minutes in the Saint James's Park.
- 5:40Thank you very much. That's all right.
- 5:42It's a pleasure. Should we walk I?
- 5:43Wonder if we should walk along to a very famous Doctor Who
- 5:46location. Trafalgar Square.
- 5:48Come on, then, let's do it. Next Excerpt Let's go So sorry,
- 5:58Where are we now in our Christmas extravaganza?
- 6:02I'm We're outside TGI Friday's in Leicester Square.
- 6:07We've just been to the Christmas market and with.
- 6:11Delicious glue vine. Is that how you say it?
- 6:12I think so. My wine?
- 6:14I'll say it, you know? And so the next thing I'd like
- 6:17to ask you about, please is 2 Christmas gifts.
- 6:21That we got OK. One was the Daleks in colour,
- 6:25and the Alpha was a new version of an adventure in space and
- 6:29time. Let's start with the Daleks.
- 6:32It was weird with the no, no, no.
- 6:36It was because I'm. I was working late that night
- 6:39and I came in halfway through and put it on and I was
- 6:44completely flummoxed because it was just like this overwhelming
- 6:49sensory thing of colour and noise and the music was wrong
- 6:54and everything was just wrong. And I thought, this is awful and
- 6:58I had to stop, walk. I had to stop watching.
- 7:00And I thought, maybe I need to just watch this from the start
- 7:03and maybe I'll get it, which I did the next day.
- 7:06And it was great. But just for that moment I was
- 7:09just like, no, this isn't the what's going on?
- 7:12What? Why?
- 7:12Why? You know what my reaction to
- 7:15that was, don't you? Yes, I do, because we had a
- 7:17discussion about this on our group chat with Fraser.
- 7:20Which has been noted I can be occasionally emotional.
- 7:23Once or twice. I loved it though, I just
- 7:27thought as a way of making it accessible for kids today.
- 7:32Although Mark's mother watched it, right?
- 7:34And she said to us on a Zoom chat.
- 7:36Oh, wasn't it slow and. That was fast, but there there
- 7:41were some great bits that the way they did the Dalek escape
- 7:45was brilliant and the music in that bit was great.
- 7:48I'm not sure the whole score was was terrific, the new bits from
- 7:51Marquez, but that bit was really fantastic.
- 7:55I I just thought it was very judiciously edited, Yes.
- 7:59So all the plot points were there and they didn't skip over
- 8:03all of the emotional and character moments?
- 8:05No. No, no, there were were a few
- 8:06there still. So yeah, I thought it was a
- 8:09really interesting experiment. Well then, did you watch An
- 8:13Adventure with Space and Time? Yes, because that was on
- 8:15afterwards. So yeah, I wasn't going to.
- 8:18And then I thought, oh, it's just started.
- 8:20Did you suspect anything? Well, everyone had said, oh,
- 8:23well, you know what's going to happen at the end.
- 8:25So yes, I did kind of realise that something was probably
- 8:29going to be different at the end and then it was lovely.
- 8:33Can I ask what's her little tingle in your boxer shorts when
- 8:35you saw for the first time? It's just that wink that was so
- 8:40doctoring He's. So charismatic he is.
- 8:43The charisma just comes in waves off the screen and you can see
- 8:47exactly why Russell cast him because it's just like, wow, I
- 8:52it's it's really interesting because back in 2013 seeing Matt
- 8:58Smith there made me cry, but this made me excited for what
- 9:02was to come, whereas we were. Whereas the previous time I was
- 9:06crying for the whole Hartnell, seeing the future, this time it
- 9:11was like some it's still going and it's going to get.
- 9:15It's something great is coming. And Gates did say, didn't he?
- 9:19They deliberately did it that way so you could superimpose in
- 9:22any doctor. Absolutely.
- 9:24You can imagine Peter Capaldi with his attack eyebrows looking
- 9:27grumpy at William Hartnell because he Jody just said Oh,
- 9:30brilliant. Is an adventure in Space and
- 9:32Time still the best thing that Gates has done for Doctor Who?
- 9:35Yep, including his books. Oh, well, I did love Nightshade,
- 9:39so me too. It's yeah, I think it's it's the
- 9:44most moving love letter to the early years of the show.
- 9:48And that, and that's the thing about the Daleks as well, was
- 9:52that ending with all the recolorized clips from different
- 9:55stories and just seeing the giant Wasps as they're now known
- 9:59in my house, do. You know what?
- 10:01Mark couldn't handle the amount of juice that was coming out.
- 10:04And I'd say, I mean, I was screaming.
- 10:06Yeah. Oh my God.
- 10:07And then I loved the direction of Oh my God, they found the
- 10:09massacre when it was quite obviously a clip from the time
- 10:13Meddler. You fools.
- 10:14Don't you know anything? You look Doctor.
- 10:17Who we shall send you back to your beloved Goddess.
- 10:20People are looking at us. Right now.
- 10:22In the middle of Leicester. Square.
- 10:23That's fine, so. Yeah, I mean, we're so handsome.
- 10:26People are usually looking at us, so I.
- 10:28So yeah, that that was a that was a lovely evening.
- 10:33My last question to you and this little segment then is what
- 10:36would you like to see coloured and re edited next?
- 10:40Well, I was thinking about this and the answer is Tomb of the
- 10:45Cybermen. Does it need editing?
- 10:49Not. Really.
- 10:50Well, maybe you can tighten up a few bits, But I was thinking
- 10:52about this because my mum, My wonderful mum, has been watching
- 10:57Doctor Who from the start on iPlayer and we were having a
- 11:00long chat because Tomb of the Cybermen, What she said was the
- 11:03scariest Doctor Who story that she remembered from when she was
- 11:06a kid. And I'm just thinking that would
- 11:09yeah, that would be such a great story to Colourise and you could
- 11:13tighten it up slightly. It doesn't need a lot more.
- 11:15So if you take that down to 75 minutes, you'll use lose in 15.
- 11:19Minutes. So I have heard rumours it could
- 11:21be the War Games. Well, that would take some
- 11:24editing. To edit that down to. 70
- 11:27minutes? Yeah.
- 11:28I'm not sure about that. I think Tomb would be a a good
- 11:31one. It's the second biggest enemy.
- 11:34I think it's it's got lots of iconic moments, things that
- 11:39people remember. My mum always said she
- 11:41remembered the side of men coming out of the tombs really
- 11:44well. So I think there's that epic
- 11:46nature to that story that would go down well.
- 11:48Are you? Listening to this Russell T
- 11:50Davis. I should hope so.
- 11:52With the Gayest Podcast going and then my last question, now I
- 11:57realized I said to my. Penelope.
- 11:59Yeah. OK, My last question.
- 12:01Is Who marked the anniversary better?
- 12:06Moffett with adventurous Base of Time and Day of the Doctor,
- 12:10Chipnall with Power of the Doctor, or Russell with the
- 12:16Daleks in Colour and The Three Specials.
- 12:19Oh God, it's really hard because I remember the 50th with such
- 12:23fondness and there was such a wave of excitement about the
- 12:2650th that I don't think has quite been matched this year,
- 12:30although we've had lots of stuff this year.
- 12:33But I think The Day of the Doctors seems so big at the time
- 12:38and seeing that in the cinema was such a brilliant and special
- 12:42experience with my friends and and yeah, I I think the 50th was
- 12:49probably the peak for me. I'm going to disagree, of
- 12:53course. You.
- 12:54Would And it's not just because I'm not anti Moffett, as I have
- 12:57proven recently, but doing many a commentary on Moffett stories
- 13:00I love. It's just because I feel like
- 13:02the 50th was a great celebration of new series.
- 13:06And it wasn't inclusive, necessarily of everything else.
- 13:09I actually think Chibnall did a better job of celebrating the
- 13:12Classic series and Power of the Doctor.
- 13:14Absolutely. But actually, I think what
- 13:15Russell did that neither of the others did.
- 13:17Was celebrate it all. Well, and to pave the way for a
- 13:20really exciting new future there, the Doctor ended with
- 13:24Matt Smith still in the role. Power of the Doctor ended with
- 13:27David Tennant back in the role these specials have ended with.
- 13:31Shooty Gatwa. Come in, Yeah, And aside from
- 13:33being the hottest man in Doctor Who, it just offers so much
- 13:37promise. Yeah, and I'm not sure there was
- 13:41that same wave of optimism about Peter Capaldi coming.
- 13:46No Doctor. Doctor Who fans were very
- 13:48excited because he's a brilliant actor, but I don't think there
- 13:51was that that same level publicly.
- 13:55You know that bit where he walked out the door in the, you
- 13:57know, the the BBC Three special? Yeah, with Joe.
- 14:00What's the face? Joe Wiley.
- 14:03Yeah, and he almost looked embarrassed himself, like, oh,
- 14:06everyone's going to hate me. Why are you doing this?
- 14:08Yeah. Why are you making me?
- 14:09Shame, because he was fabulous. He was.
- 14:11He was, And he he'd been the person that I'd wanted to be the
- 14:13Doctor since the series had come back.
- 14:16But he wasn't my Doctor. What may I suggest?
- 14:19We move on to our next location and we can discuss the latest
- 14:23specials, right? So let's go.
- 14:31So here we are on our whirlwind tour of London as we await the
- 14:36Christmas special of Shooty Gatwa's opener.
- 14:39And I've got another question for you.
- 14:41OK, about the 60th anniversary. Of Doctor Who, Right.
- 14:45OK. So what did you think about Big
- 14:48finishes, meteoric series Once and Future celebrating 60 years
- 14:55of Doctor Who? Oh God, it was shit.
- 15:02What went wrong? Everything.
- 15:06Look, some of the individual stories were OK, but they were.
- 15:11No, no, they weren't. But what went wrong was there
- 15:16was nothing new there whatsoever.
- 15:19All they did was celebrate what Big Finish does, and it wasn't.
- 15:23It was like we can put this and this together to make this and
- 15:26that will do. And it was It was creatively
- 15:29bankrupt. The nerve of the Big Finish
- 15:33intern putting up that random story generator where it puts in
- 15:38four random elements from Big Finish ranges, yes, whilst once
- 15:43the future was doing that exact. Thing.
- 15:44Oh God, yeah. And it was also inconsequential
- 15:49and they could have done a really great linked story
- 15:52crossing different doctors, eras and.
- 15:55But no, it was just like, oh, you're going to look for a
- 15:58diamond. Oh, you need some sand.
- 16:00Oh, passing the. Bastard, wasn't it?
- 16:01Yeah, it's like the best one I think was Peter Davison because
- 16:08it had something to say. The others had nothing to say
- 16:14and it just came away thinking, well that's just a thing.
- 16:18It's just happened and and even and even went to the the with
- 16:23the the calling one of actually that really didn't happen and
- 16:27they've created this beautiful relationship between Jackie and
- 16:30Christina and then wiped it like it never happened.
- 16:33So what was the fucking point? It it tried to be celebratory.
- 16:37You're right, it ended up being utterly inconsequential.
- 16:40Interestingly, we were just inside Forbidden Planet, and
- 16:42Sire revealed that he, in fact, hadn't listened to the final
- 16:45part. Oh, sorry.
- 16:46The penultimate part. The final part coming out this
- 16:49year. The union.
- 16:50He hadn't listened to that yet, so he decided to stick it on the
- 16:53other day. Sire, any thoughts?
- 16:56I was just weary by the end of it.
- 16:58It was just like, I don't care. I don't care about the 11
- 17:01because I've never heard anything with the 11 and they
- 17:04never went to the trouble of explaining much about who the
- 17:08the two or the four or the however many there were.
- 17:11Thing was. And why should I care why you
- 17:14didn't make me care? Didn't you get hard at the
- 17:17thought of Caroline Ford coming back to Doctor Who?
- 17:19No, no, because Big Finish. I've done it several times
- 17:22already. They did it for the 30th no, the
- 17:2740th anniversary. They brought her back with
- 17:29Geoffrey Baildon. You know, and she's come back
- 17:31with Paul Mcgahn several times in his run.
- 17:34And had her own series, so it's nothing new.
- 17:37We're effectively saying then big finishes attempt to
- 17:39celebrate the 60th anniversary could do better.
- 17:42Yeah, I mean, it was. I'd not heard Christopher
- 17:45Eccleston on audio and he was really good.
- 17:48But I didn't know who the Lumiere was, and they didn't
- 17:53make any kind of concession to anyone who didn't know who the
- 17:58characters were to introduce them if they were big, finished
- 18:01characters. So why should I care?
- 18:03Well, I don't think many people did care if I'm honest.
- 18:06Has it enticed you to go on because there's so many ranges
- 18:10intersecting in once and future? Has it enticed you to go on and
- 18:13explore further? Big Finish.
- 18:14No, the problem is it's put me off buying any more Big Finish
- 18:18and you know, because this was my my sort of dipping my toes
- 18:24and it sounded very exciting from all the marketing and I
- 18:27thought, well, this would be a good way of coming back, but now
- 18:30I don't, I have no goodwill towards them at all.
- 18:33Well, here we are, live from Trafalgar Square.
- 18:37Big finishers now officially debunked by absura blunt
- 18:41penknife. I suppose we should move on to
- 18:44our next location. I.
- 18:45Think so. OK.
- 18:46And then we promise we'll talk about the David Tennant specials
- 18:50right toe. So what?
- 18:52What? That might give you a clue of
- 18:57where we're standing at the moment.
- 18:58Or you might think so I was having.
- 19:00A stroke. One or the other.
- 19:02And it wasn't David Tennant, I was thinking.
- 19:03So where have we come now in our magical mystery tours?
- 19:06We're in front of County Hall next to the London Eye.
- 19:11Prominently featured in Rose and We've Just Gone past.
- 19:15Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. We didn't hold hands.
- 19:18Prominently featured in. Rose.
- 19:20I mean, I haven't. Had the garlic invasion of
- 19:22Earth. I've held his arm every time
- 19:23he's crossed the road. He's quick, he's a bit quick to
- 19:25cross the road, this one. I've got long legs.
- 19:28He does have long legs. We've discovered that Big Ben
- 19:30is, in fact, the only thing taller.
- 19:32Than so it's. True in London.
- 19:34So sorry. OK, have you got a question?
- 19:36For me I do. I do.
- 19:38Interesting. It's surprisingly.
- 19:40And it's about the current. Special one, could we?
- 19:43Just take them one at a time. We get your opinion on the three
- 19:46of them. Let's start with the Star Beast.
- 19:50Loved it. Having grown up knowing the
- 19:54comic strip which I have known for a very long time, it was
- 20:00lovely to see a comic strip story acknowledged in the show
- 20:04and Beat Meet the most High of all.
- 20:08Beat the Most high of All. Meeps is so good and was so
- 20:14brilliantly made and created and beautiful and lovely.
- 20:17And the story was great and just the instant we're not even
- 20:21holding back from the Doctor. And Donna meeting was so
- 20:24fantastic And David Tennant was so brilliant back because he's
- 20:29learnt a lot in 15 years and I love his new Doctor more than I
- 20:33loved his old Doctor. Interesting.
- 20:35And I did like his old Doctor, but this this incarnation has
- 20:39been fascinating so. I said in in the longer review I
- 20:43did that suddenly like doctor's got massive heart again.
- 20:46Now I realise I'm contradicting myself because I think Power of
- 20:49the Doctor had huge. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:51And we we discussed that, didn't we?
- 20:52And yeah, yeah, I've got a bit. Mushy.
- 20:54Yes, it was like. You, me and Fraser were getting
- 20:56married. But yeah, there there's just
- 21:00something about the Russell T Davis families I think, that
- 21:04gets you. And you know what isn't?
- 21:07It, yes, it's so warm. What I loved was 15 years had
- 21:11passed for all those characters and particularly Sylvia, who I
- 21:15absolutely loved before, but now I just, I just want to hug her
- 21:19because she's she's turned so much and she was so brilliant
- 21:24and so funny. The scene where she's trying to
- 21:26get the pronouns right. Yeah, that was so moving.
- 21:30And then next thing she's trying to hide the Doctor Who's you
- 21:34can't see him. There's nothing to see.
- 21:35Here, skinny. Man, and just that furious you
- 21:40was so and she got to slap him. Finally, the.
- 21:43Funniest bit for me was when they was all creeping past that
- 21:46man asleep on the yes right and meat goes past and poor
- 21:50Jacqueline King has to wait for that fucking puppet to.
- 21:54And she saw it going. Is it moving?
- 21:56Is it? Oh, it was.
- 21:57Fab. Whenever The fact that they made
- 21:59an animatronic puppet, yeah, that's where the money was.
- 22:03I'm hoping we're going. To see more practical effects.
- 22:06Going yes, because I think they worked brilliantly through all
- 22:09of these specials. I did love the visual weirdness
- 22:11of flux I've talked about. It at great.
- 22:13Length. But you can go CGI crazy, and I
- 22:16do like physical. Effects, yes.
- 22:17And I think there's something about physical effects that that
- 22:20work. So yeah, I really enjoyed that
- 22:23episode and I had the great pleasure of watching it with the
- 22:25wonderful Brendan Jones, who I hadn't seen for four years.
- 22:29And so that made it extra special and Colin and Rod as
- 22:32well, but that that. Not to denigrate your.
- 22:35Colin But you know, there was something about being reunited
- 22:40with an old, but being reunited with an old friend when old
- 22:44friends were being reunited was something quite special.
- 22:47So that was yeah, that was that was good podcasting.
- 22:49That wasn't it. I think I've done this before,
- 22:51once you are. So hard from podcasting?
- 22:57Exactly. Now which podcast have you not
- 22:59been on? There's quite a few, OK,
- 23:02actually, there's a hell of. A lot, as long as you're still
- 23:03answering the phone to me. All right, every time.
- 23:07So now on to I believe I'm not out of line of saying both of
- 23:10our favourites of the three Wild Blue Yonder.
- 23:16I was surprised because like, well, obviously because everyone
- 23:19was surprised because we didn't know anything about this one and
- 23:21I didn't know what to expect. Were you?
- 23:23Expecting big things. No, that every time some fans
- 23:33sees don't know anything, they automatically oh, it's going to
- 23:36be Peter Capaldi, it's going to be Matt Smith, it's going to be
- 23:38Jodie Whittaker is back in this one.
- 23:41Susan's coming back. Of course they're not.
- 23:45No. Yeah.
- 23:46And so I went in thinking, none of that's going to happen, but I
- 23:50did have a moment where they walked into the control room and
- 23:52I thought, or there's all these weird pods in there, maybe the
- 23:55old doctors are going to be in there or something.
- 23:57And then I thought, Nah, don't be silly because it wasn't that
- 24:00kind of story and it's not those kind of specials.
- 24:02And this, I was on the edge of my seat throughout it because I
- 24:07didn't know what was going to happen.
- 24:09It was. And of course, Russell is smart
- 24:14enough to know he's got 2 brilliant actors coming back.
- 24:18You're going to give them the most screen time you can give
- 24:21them. And so basically it's a two or
- 24:24four hander or a big hander maybe.
- 24:26I beg your pardon? Because they've got big.
- 24:29The the hands are wrong. I.
- 24:30Think you've given a few big hands in your time?
- 24:33Sorry, sorry, we need Fraser. Here.
- 24:36So I've just thought it was brilliant and just that moment
- 24:41where suddenly you realise the Doctor's in the room with Donna,
- 24:45but Donna's also in the room with the Doctor and it did take
- 24:48me a while to realise that that can't be.
- 24:52Oh, and that was great, I'll tell you.
- 24:55What? I've not been that unsettled.
- 24:57By Doctor for a long. Time in the new series, I don't
- 25:00think not like that, no. And by the time we got to a bit
- 25:03where they're running down the corridor, they're trying to stop
- 25:05the bomb, Donna's being left behind.
- 25:07And it was the. Wrong, Donna.
- 25:09Oh my God, I wasn't. It like, did you have a moment
- 25:11where you thought they'd killed the wrong one and she was going
- 25:14to die? Yeah, I'm still.
- 25:15Here. And it was just no.
- 25:19Is this setting something up with Evil Donna and oh?
- 25:22They would look on evil Donna's. Face.
- 25:23Yeah, that triumph. Oh my God.
- 25:26And weren't they both brilliant at being evil and good?
- 25:31Clearly, some other fans of Wild Blue Yonder are about to walk
- 25:35past. They are.
- 25:36Oh my God. Well, OK, Shall we try and move
- 25:43on to the giggle? Yes, What they're singing about,
- 25:47I don't know. They've stopped now.
- 25:51Oh, it's probably football. No, they're clearly big fans of
- 25:55the Giggle. OK, So what about The Giggle?
- 25:58The giggle? Really.
- 25:59On. It's great.
- 26:01What's the? Name.
- 26:02Oh God. I kind of knew this was going to
- 26:06be the epic one and going to be big because we knew certain
- 26:09things. We knew the toy maker was going
- 26:11to be in it. We didn't know whether the toy
- 26:13maker would have been in the three episodes or not.
- 26:17And. Can I say a few words please and
- 26:19get like an instant one sentence reaction?
- 26:21OK, Neil Patrick Harris. Fabulous.
- 26:24What I we meet again? Doctor and Michael Goff been
- 26:31shown. Yes, and Hartnell colorized And
- 26:34I'll. Say it a million times.
- 26:36I'm so pleased. The games they played were
- 26:38simple, yes. Like the original one and people
- 26:41were were complaining that they were were simple, it was just a
- 26:44ball game and he he didn't catch it.
- 26:47But of course, that's how you trap the toy maker, because he's
- 26:49probably banned by the rules and he will play to the rules of the
- 26:52game. How simple.
- 26:54Yeah, exactly. And so that's the way you
- 26:56defeated by beating him at a game, and it's a game of chance.
- 26:59They couldn't. The Doctor could have lost
- 27:01there, but he didn't. Bonnie Langford back as Mel.
- 27:04I screamed because we kind of knew and I think we've kind of
- 27:08worked out, but just seeing her there and just that little,
- 27:12little conversation between her and the doctor was just
- 27:15beautiful. Have a long glitch had.
- 27:17A one years old. Viking funeral, didn't they?
- 27:20And then she wanted to come home.
- 27:22Brilliant. That's how you do it.
- 27:23You don't need to do things. And I know there are.
- 27:26There's a friend of mine who said, well, it wasn't like a
- 27:28school reunion story, but it wasn't designed to be a school.
- 27:31It's keep doing. No, there's only so many times
- 27:33you can do that. In fact, I loved how she went.
- 27:35Look, things are tense right now.
- 27:37We can't. We'll have our moment in a
- 27:38minute. And Mad Mad Auntie Mel?
- 27:40Good. OK, my next thing there is Donna
- 27:44and the dolls. I want to say the rhyme.
- 27:47OK. Oh, my name's Donna and you're a
- 27:52gonna fabulous. I didn't.
- 27:55Think I'd see kids being frightened like that on No.
- 27:57Oh, that. Wasn't Christmas?
- 27:59Day was it? What am I talking about?
- 28:01But those puppets were brilliant and they were proper physical
- 28:04puppets as well. And again, we talked earlier
- 28:07about the companion puppets and Neil Patrick Harris doing that
- 28:12himself. Because he's a puppeteer.
- 28:14Because of course he is. I love the flux coming down and.
- 28:17All the planets and then cutting.
- 28:19Shivnall references go on, Russell.
- 28:21Exactly. And it, Yeah.
- 28:23By regeneration or by regeneration?
- 28:27Well, you know, I have no problem with this at all because
- 28:31you could do anything in Doctor Who.
- 28:33And why not? This is Russell being savvy.
- 28:36I'm thinking, well if we do want to bring back old doctors in the
- 28:40in the future then we've now got to get out clause where they can
- 28:43be a bit older and we can have Peter Capaldi teaching at the at
- 28:48the university for the rest of his life.
- 28:49Like Professor Cronotis, the War Doctor can be happy at the end
- 28:53of his life. Matt Smith can live 1000 years
- 28:58on Trends of Law again. My God, it's a union.
- 29:03Helicopter carrier the TARDIS we've.
- 29:05Chosen the most dramatic moment to record this segment, haven't
- 29:09we? So, you know, I think that's a.
- 29:13Smart move. I saw Shooty Gatwa's bulge in
- 29:17his underwear. Well, you.
- 29:18Couldn't help but you couldn't miss it, could you?
- 29:21He was so it just came off the screen in waves.
- 29:24Didn't it? I mean, tenant and shooty
- 29:26together, Yeah. And.
- 29:28Yeah, I've long had this this wish where they did a
- 29:31regeneration story where the Doctor regenerated halfway
- 29:34through and the new Doctor had to solve.
- 29:37Had to solve the adventure left by dealing with this I believe.
- 29:42Fraser wasn't keen on. That well he, Well, Fraser was
- 29:44ever keen on anything, is he? Stranger, I rather wonder, you
- 29:48know that if you try to pull me open like a Christmas.
- 29:51What would you find? That you and Fraser would come
- 29:53popping out. I'm not pulling.
- 29:56I'm not pulling. I always like to think of you
- 29:58and Fraser inside me somewhere. Although you'd probably pop out
- 30:03of my arse, wouldn't you? Sorry, Fraser.
- 30:07Although if it meant for the rest of the day the two of you
- 30:10would be walking around in your underwear, I'm prepared to be
- 30:12pulled. OK, sorry.
- 30:15I can't even follow that. So do you like the idea of the
- 30:19Doctor settling down? Allah Douglas Adams.
- 30:21Yes, I thought that was lovely. And that is just because they're
- 30:24right. They had that long list at the
- 30:27end of all the things they've been running from, right from
- 30:30the start, from Mavic Chen to the Key to Time to all of this.
- 30:34And it's true, The Doctor never stops to deal with the
- 30:37consequences of what's happened because you're off to the next
- 30:41adventure. Jodi said.
- 30:42That in in Irving that you're always running to the next thing
- 30:46because that's what you do. You run away from everything.
- 30:48It was like he saw that bit. It is maybe, yeah.
- 30:51I'm going to do something with that.
- 30:53And how brilliant, yeah? Well listen, Next up we are
- 30:57heading to the BFI. We are to watch the Christmas
- 31:01special. Oh my God, the church on Ruby
- 31:05Rd. We'll.
- 31:05Be introduced to Ruby to the Doctor properly.
- 31:10We'll hear the Goblin song on the big.
- 31:11Screen We'll see Anita Dobson oh.
- 31:14Dad, hopefully one of us will suck off shooting.
- 31:27So here we are at the bar of the VFI awaiting the premiere of
- 31:32Church of Ruby Rd. SI How's your day been?
- 31:35It's been really good, but I'm very excited now.
- 31:38We certainly have not just played in the BFI bar top five
- 31:43Doctor Who fans. We'd have it off.
- 31:45With have we? Definitely not.
- 31:47And just before, in case anyone's thinking about it, yes,
- 31:50it is you. Definitely you.
- 31:53Si especially one of you and you together.
- 31:57You will never know. Filthy.
- 31:59You are. That's between the two of us.
- 32:02So how are you feeling? Nervous and excited.
- 32:06I don't know why because I've never done anything quite like
- 32:09this before. I think this is.
- 32:12Yeah, I so. Because we we've been
- 32:14speculating all afternoon who might be here.
- 32:17And then you think about who might be here and then you go,
- 32:19Oh my God, if I. Don't have a threesome?
- 32:22We're shooting at Russell by the end of the day and I'm in
- 32:25control of Doctor Who by the end of the night.
- 32:28We're all in trouble, very. Disappointed.
- 32:30Yes. Well, we can only assume that
- 32:34all the people around us in the bar right now are in fact
- 32:36industry experts. Well, this is not well.
- 32:38We do keep looking round to see if there's people we recognise
- 32:41or or whatever. Don't we?
- 32:42So then I'll remember we in fact don't know any.
- 32:45No, exactly. So.
- 32:47And we are not industry experts, no.
- 32:49But I think we're posing as industry experts, Yes, tonight.
- 32:51Because I don't. I'm not sure.
- 32:53If this fan's invited. No, I don't think there are.
- 32:55I think this is. This is like the Super deluxe.
- 32:58Plan. Exactly.
- 32:59This is the TV critics of the newspapers and the big magazines
- 33:03and and things. So once we've been let in, we'll
- 33:06do a small recording in there, and then once the show is over,
- 33:10we will be giving our spoiler free.
- 33:12Yep, let's say that. Again, spoiler free, because
- 33:15we're not going to ruin it for anyone.
- 33:17Opinion of the Church. Of Ruby Rd.
- 33:20Of course, we can already say that the Goblins song is
- 33:23fantastic. Well, I can't.
- 33:24I haven't heard it yet. But I have.
- 33:27OK. I was getting huge labyrinth
- 33:29vibes. Good.
- 33:30Oh, I love Labyrinth. What's high?
- 33:31Are you ready to go in? Yes, I am.
- 33:35Woo. So sorry, here we are at the
- 33:45reception, the pre reception to the Christmas special, What's
- 33:48been occurring. Well, we've just passed Anita
- 33:51Dobson and Brian May at the bar. We have.
- 33:54We have had a photo with the TARDIS, the actual TARDIS.
- 33:58And a special video taken with special effects behind us, Yeah.
- 34:01We went on the Big Blue background with the official
- 34:05Doctor Who thing. We've been drinking the
- 34:08complimentary wine and eating the complimentary blinis.
- 34:12And we met this guy Russell someone.
- 34:15Russell. Who?
- 34:16Russell. Oh, Russell.
- 34:18Is he involved in this? I think so, yeah.
- 34:20Yeah, he was. He was very God.
- 34:22He's a lovely man. Gorgeous, and he said we were
- 34:25very polite because we waited to talk to him while he was talking
- 34:27to somebody else. I threw my arms around him at
- 34:30the first opportunity. This picture will be available
- 34:32and. And I went back-to-back, of
- 34:35course. The ultimate back to.
- 34:37Back and we both told him how much we liked Wild Blue Yonder,
- 34:40which he was. He sounded surprised by.
- 34:42And he said he wants to do another one like that next year.
- 34:45Still some? Crickets.
- 34:46No, thank you. Thank you.
- 34:49Obviously that's someone offering us food.
- 34:51Yeah, which is lovely, but it's cheesy.
- 34:54And despite all of this excitement, what we do have to
- 34:57say is thank you to Tom. Yes, thank you very much, Tom
- 35:00Keel for for inviting us and for making our evening.
- 35:03And for just being charming and lovely as well.
- 35:06Lovely, yeah. Very lovely.
- 35:08Do you ever listen to this? I think you might.
- 35:11I'd just like to say Bravo, our demon.
- 35:22So we have just left the premiere of the Church of Ruby
- 35:27Rd. We are on the way to the train
- 35:29station home now, Psy. No spoilers please.
- 35:33How was it? So much fun.
- 35:37Amazing fun. I'm going to ask you now to
- 35:39describe the Church of the Road in three words.
- 35:42Spoiler free. Just three adjectives or three
- 35:46three descriptive words, please. We'll go back and forth.
- 35:49OK, music. Warm, funny, atmospheric
- 36:00snowman. Sexy as fuck.
- 36:07Oh, so much charisma. And so much style.
- 36:11My God. Well, I mean, I can't really.
- 36:15We can't take anything else, really, Can't we?
- 36:17Because we don't want to spoil anyone's good time.
- 36:18And we promised that we wouldn't.
- 36:20You're going to have a good time on Christmas Day.
- 36:23And we want to say as well what an amazing event they put
- 36:26together. There was TARDIS shaped popcorn
- 36:28on the seats. There was the TARDIS was in the
- 36:32foyer. There were everyone was just
- 36:34mingling. Everyone was happy.
- 36:36They did a question and answer. Oh my God, the best question
- 36:40ever was this little girl who said shooty.
- 36:43What's best, Doctor Who or Barbie?
- 36:46And Shooty's face at that was magnificent, he went.
- 36:50Oh, Doctor Ken. Sorry.
- 36:53How's your day been? It's been such a gorgeous day.
- 36:56I've had, I've spent it with you and that's always a joy.
- 37:00But it's just been this evening's just been has blown my
- 37:04mind. It's just been really, really
- 37:06lovely. Again, a massive thank you to
- 37:09Tom who got us the tickets. Thank you so much, Tom.
- 37:12And if you ever get a chance to go to one of these events, go to
- 37:15them. They are fantastic.
- 37:17We felt like celebrities, didn't we?
- 37:18Did. And we're not celebrities at
- 37:20all, but no, but they do now. I didn't.
- 37:24Get to tell Rusty Davis I was a podcaster, though.
- 37:27You did. You did very well.
- 37:30Anyway, fabulous day. Thank you very much for sharing
- 37:33it with me. Thank you, Joe, as always.
