Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Missing out on the America's Cup isn't the end of the world
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Bonj. Italia is going to host the thirty eighth America's
- 0:03Speaker 1: Cup in summer twenty twenty seven, at least that's when
- 0:05Speaker 1: they think it will happen. The old mug again heading
- 0:07Speaker 1: to European waters the first time. The Italians will play hosts.
- 0:11Speaker 1: They've had the World Series before, but never the big
- 0:13Speaker 1: one before. So it'll be Mount Vesuvius in the background,
- 0:17Speaker 1: not Rangetoto. It'll be pizza in the balleys of fans,
- 0:20Speaker 1: not fish and chips. Auckland missed out, which we already knew.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Athens missed out. Georgia Maloney very excited, Luna Rossa obviously pumped.
- 0:29Speaker 1: But the question for you this morning, do you wake
- 0:33Speaker 1: up feeling jealous? Is there a pit of disappointment in
- 0:37Speaker 1: your stomach? Do we lambasted our measly stingy government for
- 0:43Speaker 1: not prioritizing a sailing race. My feelings, well, it's nice
- 0:47Speaker 1: that they have somewhere to sail, and good luck to them,
- 0:50Speaker 1: but I feel zero fomo. We were on the hook
- 0:54Speaker 1: for tens of millions of dollars. Waigno hasn't got his
- 0:57Speaker 1: bed tax yet. Politically, it was the right call to
- 1:00Speaker 1: imagine with this announcement coming a week out from budget day.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Imagine the outcry from the unions and the opposition and
- 1:08Speaker 1: the media. You're spending how much money on men sailing
- 1:12Speaker 1: around the harbor while cutting women's pay. Can you just
- 1:15Speaker 1: imagine that. Plus when we debated all of this a
- 1:18Speaker 1: few months back, we didn't know at that point that
- 1:21Speaker 1: Dalton was quietly walking away from contract negotiations with Peter Burling,
- 1:26Speaker 1: So we would have spent millions on a race for
- 1:29Speaker 1: a boat with an Aussie at the helm, not our
- 1:32Speaker 1: beloved Burling. Not that that matters. That is fine, we've
- 1:35Speaker 1: had one before in glen Ashby, but there's no doubt
- 1:38Speaker 1: the preference was for Burling to continue. Grant Dalton told
- 1:42Speaker 1: me that at the time. But there's a bigger point here.
- 1:45Speaker 1: When times are tough, when the kitty's running low, you
- 1:49Speaker 1: can't afford the nice to haves. For Team New Zealand,
- 1:52Speaker 1: that was Burling. For us, it was the competition itself.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And if you're worried that Dalton has regrets about Auckland
- 1:59Speaker 1: failing to get a look in, take a look at
- 2:02Speaker 1: the press release for today's announcement come out overnight. He says,
- 2:06Speaker 1: Italians not us Kiwis. Italians are quote the most passionate
- 2:11Speaker 1: and engaged America's Cup audience in the world. This city
- 2:16Speaker 1: is the best option for growing global audiences. It's a
- 2:21Speaker 1: summer in Europe, so if you're a sailing mad person
- 2:24Speaker 1: then it might be time to book some flights little
- 2:26Speaker 1: midwinter getaway. Some difficult captains calls have to be made
- 2:30Speaker 1: and have been made, but for us and for Team
- 2:33Speaker 1: New Zealand, it sounds like they were the necessary ones,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and the necessary choices are pretty much always the right ones.
