Transcript
- This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Today... a World Cup final that has an entire hemisphere holding its breath. Two internet celebrities arrested in Miami. And American missiles flying over the Persian Gulf for the eighth night in a row. Headlines... Heartbeat... Hope. Let's get into it. At three o'clock Eastern this afternoon, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Argentina and Spain will play for the World Cup. Forty-eight nations started this tournament. Two are left. Argentina got here on a stoppage-time miracle. Down one to nothing to England, held off the scoresheet for eighty-five minutes... Lionel Messi set up Enzo Fernandez to tie it, and then in the ninety-second minute, Messi found Lautaro Martinez unmarked in the box for the winner. Spain got here differently. Six shutouts in seven matches. One goal allowed all tournament. Against France in the semifinal, Mikel Oyarzabal buried a penalty in the twenty-second minute, and Pedro Porro added a second. Clinical. Argentina is trying to become the first back-to-back World Cup champion since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Now... I love sports. I do. And there is something genuinely beautiful about watching a thirty-nine-year-old Messi carry a nation on his back one more time. But here is what I keep coming back to. Religion News Service has a piece today about Catholic priests in South America who see Argentina's run as a missionary opportunity. Fans are praying. Players are crossing themselves. Whole cities are stopping. And Scripture is honest about this. Psalm 115 says, "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands." The psalmist wasn't only talking about statues. He was talking about anything we build up and stake our joy on. Enjoy the game today. Cheer loud. But notice what you're tempted to worship. Because on Monday morning... one nation will be devastated, and the trophy will still be a piece of metal. Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested yesterday in Miami by U.S. Marshals. If you don't know the name, Andrew Tate is one of the most-followed men on the internet. Over ten million followers on X. He and his brother built an empire selling a certain vision of masculinity — wealth, dominance, contempt for women. Yesterday, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service announced fifty-nine total charges against the two brothers. Andrew faces forty-two. Tristan faces seventeen. The charges include rape, human trafficking for sexual exploitation, assault, and offenses involving indecent images of a child. The alleged crimes span from 2010 to 2017. Seven alleged victims in the U.K. case. The brothers have denied everything. Their attorney called the charges, quote, "filth and slander." They'll appear in federal court in Miami early this week. Here is what makes this story worth pausing on. Andrew Tate has spent years telling young men that this is what strength looks like. Millions of boys listened. Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." Real biblical masculinity is not domination. It's Christ washing feet. It's Joseph refusing Potiphar's wife. It's a husband who, Ephesians 5 says, loves his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. If you have a son, or a nephew, or a young man in your life... this is the moment to talk. Not with panic. With clarity. There is a counterfeit masculinity being sold to a generation. And Scripture offers something infinitely better. For the eighth consecutive night, American forces struck targets inside Iran. Here is the sequence. On Thursday, Iranian forces attacked two U.S. military bases in Jordan. Two American service members were killed. On Saturday evening, at six p.m. Eastern, U.S. Central Command launched retaliatory strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance, air defense, missile and drone storage, and Revolutionary Guard forces. Overnight, Iran fired back at American allies in the Gulf. Bahrain sounded air raid sirens. Kuwait's military said it was, quote, "repelling missile and drone attacks." All of this... while U.S. and Iranian delegations are technically still at the negotiating table under a memorandum of understanding signed in June. Two American families are grieving today. Please pray for them by name in your heart, even if you don't know them. The Lord does. And pray for peace. Not the shallow kind. The real kind. Jesus said, "In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart. I have overcome the world." That's John 16:33. He did not promise no war. He promised something better than the absence of war. He promised Himself. The Prince of Peace is not a diplomat. He is a King. And His kingdom is the only one that does not eventually collapse. Three quick briefs. In North Dakota, the families of two men are suing a hospital after DNA tests revealed the men were switched at birth thirty-eight years ago. Two entire lives, lived in the wrong story. Psalm 139 says God knits us together and knows our days before one of them comes to be. No hospital error escapes His providence. Pray for these families as they grieve what they cannot get back. A cyclosporiasis outbreak is spreading across the country. Taylor Farms has expanded its iceberg lettuce recall to twenty-seven states. Check your fridge. Wash your produce. Stewardship of the body is a small, ordinary faithfulness. And in Texas, a police officer was caught on camera pulling a man from a burning car. No headline. Just a stranger risking his life for another stranger. That's the image of God, still flickering in a fallen world. Look for it. It's everywhere. Your kid looks up at dinner and asks, "If God is good, why did He let that happen?" — and you freeze. Open Bible Copilot and ask it exactly that. In seconds you get a clear, verse-backed answer that works through the text the way seminaries teach: what it says, what it means, and how to defend it. Trusted AI for Bible study, not generic AI. Bible Copilot. Today's verse is from Psalm 20, verse seven. "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." Three thousand years old. And it lands on today perfectly. Some trust in a soccer trophy. Some trust in an internet empire built on contempt. Some trust in missiles and air defense systems. None of it holds. Only His name holds. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. If today helped you, send it to one person who needs a calmer way to read the news. Whatever happens on that field this afternoon, whatever happens in that courtroom this week, whatever happens over the Persian Gulf tonight — the throne is still occupied. I'll see you tomorrow.
