Latest / Clone Wars: The Spinoff / Who Owns Your Voice in the AI Music Era?
Transcript
- 0:00So I- I- I was looking at this report this morning, and it- it- it is wild.
- 0:04The Warner Music Group settlement with Suno is officially real,
- 0:08and it basically says artists and songwriters now get to decide if their voice,
- 0:14their actual name, their likeness can even exist in AI-generated tracks.
- 0:18It's like consent is the new gold rush, but nobody knows who has the shovel.
- 0:23Wait, Suno?
- 0:24The- the- the generator where you just type in "make a 90s boom-bap track with a
- 0:30raspy voice" and boom, it pops out?
- 0:33Warner actually pinned them down?
- 0:35Pinned them down and made them sign on the line.
- 0:37But here's the- here's the catch.
- 0:39If the big labels are the ones gating this, what happens to the indie kid in Ohio or
- 0:44Florida who wakes up and finds a perfect clone of their vocals on some random TikTok
- 0:50trend with ten million views?
- 0:51They don't have Warner's legal army.
- 0:54Man, that's what I'm saying.
- 0:55I- I- I see these deepfakes all the time on the timeline, and people are like,
- 1:00"Yo, Calvin, this new snippet is fire!"
- 1:02and I'm looking at my phone like, I literally never stepped foot in the studio to
- 1:07record that.
- 1:08It's a ghost in the machine, but who's getting the check?
- 1:11See, that's where the math gets real ugly.
- 1:14You look at these AI royalty pools right now--we are talking about an average of
- 1:18four cents.
- 1:19Four cents per track, per quarter.
- 1:21You can't even buy a single loosie with that, let alone build a- a- a future.
- 1:27It makes this whole "passive income" dream look like a straight-up hustle unless you
- 1:31own the masters and the publishing outright.
- 1:34Four cents?
- 1:35Man, I've got artists on my roster who are struggling to cover gas for a weekend
- 1:39promo run, and these platforms are eating their whole style for four pennies?
- 1:44That's not a business model, that's- that's just digital sharecropping.
- 1:49It's about knowledge of self, family.
- 1:52In hip-hop, in this whole culture, your voice isn't just some- some wave
- 1:59file you export.
- 2:01It's your legacy, your discipline, your struggle.
- 2:05When you let them turn your identity into a vibe that anyone can just prompt into
- 2:10existence, you're letting them strip the spirit out of the asset.
- 2:14You got to protect your name like it's a- a brick-and-mortar storefront,
- 2:19not some free sample at the grocery store.
- 2:22But Dandy, the infrastructure is already moving past the wild west phase.
- 2:26It's shifting from "can we stop them" to "how do we tax them?"
- 2:29But the taxes are going to the wrong treasury.
- 2:32Exactly, because you look at Udio now.
- 2:35They're doing these "walled garden" deals with Universal and Warner.
- 2:38The fans can go in and remix a track in an artist's style, but--and here's the
- 2:43kicker--it has to stay on the platform.
- 2:46You can't export it to Spotify or Apple Music.
- 2:50It's like a sandbox.
- 2:52Yeah, but- but- but a sandbox is still a cage, though.
- 2:56It's cool for engagement, sure.
- 2:59The fans feel like they're part of the process, but who owns the output?
- 3:03If I make a hit inside their garden, Udio and the label are the ones keeping the
- 3:09walls high and the pockets full.
- 3:10It's- it's access, it's not ownership.
- 3:15Well, look at the alternative.
- 3:17Platforms like Voice-Swap or Kits AI are actually doing it right.
- 3:21They are paying artists directly.
- 3:23Like, literally licensing the voice model, paying per use.
- 3:27It completely flips the script.
- 3:29It's not "AI is stealing my voice" anymore, it's "what is my CPM?
- 3:33What is my licensing term?
- 3:35And what are the guardrails on my identity?"
- 3:37See, that's the bag right there.
- 3:39For a rising artist, especially out of LSU, Calabasas, wherever--you realize fast
- 3:45that touring and merch, that's hard work.
- 3:48It's- it's physically draining.
- 3:50But if your voice itself is the intellectual property, you have to treat it like a
- 3:55trademark.
- 3:56If someone wants to use the Calvin Blingwell vocal filter, they need to pay the toll
- 4:02at the gate.
- 4:02Register your name, image, and likeness.
- 4:06Treat your voice like your brand's logo.
- 4:09That is the truth.
- 4:11If you don't brand yourself, the market will brand you for cheap.
- 4:15We got to get these young artists financially literate yesterday.
- 4:20It's about knowing the difference between a license and a transfer of rights.
- 4:24You don't ever sign away the foundation.
- 4:27It's simple, really.
- 4:29Lock down your publishing.
- 4:30Verify your splits on every single track.
- 4:33Register your name and likeness rights with the state.
- 4:35If you don't own the data that trains the machine, the machine is going to own you.
- 4:39Generational wealth in this new era starts with knowing exactly what you own,
- 4:44what you rent out, and what is absolutely not for sale.
- 4:47Period.
- 4:48Man, real talk.
- 4:49Secure the voice, secure the bag.
- 4:52Good chatting, y'all.
