- 0:11Speaker 1: Pleasant Grove Police received this chilling 911 call. Upon arrival,
- 0:15Speaker 1: they met Darren West, who was visibly shaken after speaking
- 0:19Speaker 1: with his wife, Megan Huntsman, about the grim discoveries in
- 0:22Speaker 1: his garage.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And I just said, what the hell is this? What
- 0:27Speaker 2: have you done?
- 0:36Speaker 1: As they stepped into the garage, they had no idea
- 0:38Speaker 1: the horrors that awaited them inside.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I remember there being some form of tape. As we
- 0:42Speaker 3: got deeper into that box, we'd find a second child.
- 0:45Speaker 4: There could be more. Like I said, I can't remember
- 0:48Speaker 4: a damn thing.
- 0:50Speaker 2: How many do you think there would be?
- 0:56Speaker 5: Holy s * * *.
- 0:57Speaker 2: What is going on?
- 0:59Speaker 1: On April 12, 2014, Darren had just returned home after
- 1:03Speaker 1: serving time in prison for drug charges, only to stumble
- 1:07Speaker 1: upon a horrifying scene in his garage and made this
- 1:10Speaker 1: disturbing 911 call.
- 1:12Speaker 6: Pleasant Grove Police.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Oh, yes, ma'am. Can I have an officer come to
- 1:17Speaker 2: this address?
- 1:18Speaker 7: And your name?
- 1:20Speaker 8: My name's Darren West.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I just found something in my garage. I think it's
- 1:27Speaker 2: a miscarriage.
- 1:28Speaker 9: Can you be more specific? What do you mean by
- 1:30Speaker 9: a miscarriage you found?
- 1:32Speaker 6: I have no idea.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Just police and an officer up here.
- 1:35Speaker 3: That sounds like you may need medical.
- 1:39Speaker 9: It's been wrapped up in a plastic magnet.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Okay, what is it?
- 1:44Speaker 9: It's a little baby.
- 1:45Speaker 1: When police arrived at Pleasant Grove, Utah, they saw the
- 1:49Speaker 1: garage door wide open, and Darren stood outside with his family,
- 1:53Speaker 1: who had come to help him move in. Just one
- 1:55Speaker 1: look at him. and the officers knew they were in
- 1:58Speaker 1: for something dreadful.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Who lives here? That's three. One, two, three? It's a
- 2:05Speaker 2: double house. The basement and upstairs are two different parts.
- 2:07Speaker 2: My two daughters live here. See, we've been cleaning the garage.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And I've got a 48-hour.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Pass, and I have.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Yes. We went on home combined.
- 2:20Speaker 8: Yeah, I was in a halfway house.
- 2:30Speaker 1: The box in question was an ordinary-looking fruit box sitting
- 2:34Speaker 1: just outside the garage, and its exterior was tightly sealed
- 2:37Speaker 1: with electrical tape. Inside, they found a bag, also wrapped
- 2:42Speaker 1: in layer upon layer of duct tape, as if someone
- 2:45Speaker 1: desperately wanted to keep whatever was inside, hidden forever. When
- 2:49Speaker 1: the investigators finally peeled it open... What they discovered would
- 2:53Speaker 1: haunt them for years to come. It was the lifeless
- 2:56Speaker 1: body of a fully decomposed baby.
- 2:59Speaker 3: There were boxes from floor to ceiling on all three walls.
- 3:03Speaker 3: There's hundreds of boxes. How are we going to get
- 3:06Speaker 3: through all of these? We contacted the medical examiner's office,
- 3:10Speaker 3: and they sent out an investigator. Bewilderment, shock, I was speechless.
- 3:17Speaker 3: How could you fathom something like that? The big obvious
- 3:20Speaker 3: question is, what is this child doing here? Who's the mother?
- 3:24Speaker 3: Where did it come from?
- 3:25Speaker 1: The officers quickly sealed off the scene, unsure of what
- 3:28Speaker 1: had truly happened. But one thing was clear. It was
- 3:32Speaker 1: now a homicide investigation. They began searching the area, moving
- 3:36Speaker 1: from box to box, not knowing that what they had
- 3:39Speaker 1: just uncovered was just the beginning of a much darker
- 3:42Speaker 1: and more chilling story. But the question was, where was Megan?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Right now, she was the only person who could hold
- 3:49Speaker 1: the answers to this troubling mystery.
- 3:51Speaker 8: Let's start off with, is it your wife or is
- 3:55Speaker 8: it your girlfriend?
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'm still married to her, but.
- 3:57Speaker 8: Okay, so legally, according to the law, it's still your wife.
- 4:00Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 4:01Speaker 8: Okay, why don't you tell me what her name is?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Megan Huntsman.
- 4:05Speaker 5: What happened is when I went to prison, she stuck
- 4:08Speaker 5: around for two or three years and she took off.
- 4:11Speaker 2: But she is with a boyfriend now. Where is she?
- 4:15Speaker 4: In West Valley, some boyfriend.
- 4:17Speaker 2: We just had her on the phone.
- 4:18Speaker 4: She said it was his.
- 4:19Speaker 2: And I just said, what the hell is this? What
- 4:22Speaker 2: have you done? I go, we found something.
- 4:26Speaker 4: She goes, oh, you did?
- 4:28Speaker 8: Get that for her.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Don't call the police. Don't call the police.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Don't call the police. She said it was yours. Logically,
- 4:34Speaker 2: is that true?
- 4:36Speaker 4: I don't know, man.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I never knew she was pregnant.
- 4:40Speaker 1: So, for the time being, the officers focused on Megan
- 4:44Speaker 1: to understand about the unfolding events.
- 4:47Speaker 8: Are you able to help us understand what's going on here?
- 4:51Speaker 8: It was a miscarriage. How far into your pregnancy were you?
- 5:04Speaker 8: How soon can you come down here? Our detectives need
- 5:07Speaker 8: to ask you some follow-up questions so that we can
- 5:10Speaker 8: rule out any kind of foul play. Okay, listen to me.
- 5:17Speaker 8: I need you to stay at your residence. We're going
- 5:19Speaker 8: to have a West Valley City officer come pick you up.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It wasn't just Darren who was disturbed. The neighbors had
- 5:25Speaker 1: also noticed a strange, foul smell coming from the garage.
- 5:30Speaker 1: As more officers arrived at the scene, they were tasked
- 5:33Speaker 1: with meticulously searching every inch of the property of what
- 5:36Speaker 1: was quickly becoming known as the House of Horror. Meanwhile,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Megan was brought in for questioning by Detective Beckstrom. His
- 5:45Speaker 1: first goal was to understand why she had hidden the baby,
- 5:48Speaker 1: instead of reporting it to the authorities or seeking medical help. However,
- 5:52Speaker 1: in a few moments, the story took a turn more
- 5:55Speaker 1: twisted than ever.
- 5:57Speaker 10: Well, you know why we're here, what we're here to
- 5:59Speaker 10: talk about. Just start at the beginning and tell me
- 6:02Speaker 10: what happened.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Well, we were doing drugs a lot. That's what he
- 6:07Speaker 4: was in prison for. I got pregnant right before he left.
- 6:13Speaker 4: And I really didn't know because I thought it was
- 6:15Speaker 4: just stress and stuff.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And you went to prison in 2006? Yeah. How far
- 6:22Speaker 2: along were you in here?
- 6:23Speaker 4: A couple months.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Where did you have the baby?
- 6:26Speaker 4: In the house, in the bathroom.
- 6:29Speaker 10: In the house that you and Darren went to?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Describe to me what happened.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Well, I was having a lot of pain that day.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I didn't go to work. My kids were at school,
- 6:40Speaker 4: and I went in the bathroom, and I just sat
- 6:42Speaker 4: there and went... I just pushed really hard and came
- 6:46Speaker 4: out of the blue and wasn't crying. I was by
- 6:48Speaker 4: myself and I didn't know what to do. I couldn't
- 6:52Speaker 4: get into crying or anything.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Then what happened?
- 6:56Speaker 4: I got scared and I wrapped it up. Not being
- 7:00Speaker 4: smart and calling you guys. I was in shock. It
- 7:03Speaker 4: was stupid of me to do it.
- 7:04Speaker 2: What do you mean when you say you wrapped it up?
- 7:08Speaker 4: You remember me?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Megan repeated the same story she had told Darren, that
- 7:30Speaker 1: the baby had been a stillborn. Despite appearing visibly upset,
- 7:35Speaker 1: there were many details in Megan's account that just didn't
- 7:38Speaker 1: add up.
- 7:39Speaker 2: You're on the toilet, you have the baby. You said
- 7:42Speaker 2: you tried to get it to breathe. What did you do?
- 7:44Speaker 4: Well, I tried just to clean his mouth out and stuff,
- 7:47Speaker 4: and I couldn't get a response at all.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Okay. I couldn't feel a heartbeat or anything. Okay. So
- 7:54Speaker 2: you cleaned the baby's mouth up, tried to get it
- 7:56Speaker 2: to breathe, and then what?
- 7:58Speaker 4: It passed out for a little bit. I think I
- 8:00Speaker 4: lost a lot of blood.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And then when my kids got home from school, I
- 8:04Speaker 2: just told them I wasn't feeling no more.
- 8:05Speaker 4: And then I cleaned myself up, and I went and
- 8:07Speaker 4: got a box.
- 8:09Speaker 9: And then... As far as you know, unless someone else
- 8:11Speaker 9: moved it, the baby's been in the box in the
- 8:14Speaker 9: garage since that first year that Darren went to prison.
- 8:18Speaker 11: Yes. Great.
- 8:20Speaker 4: We clean that garage every year, so.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Were you worried somebody else would find it when you
- 8:25Speaker 2: guys were cleaning the garage?
- 8:27Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And so what would you do to make sure that
- 8:29Speaker 2: didn't happen?
- 8:30Speaker 4: Just kind of slide it and, like, sweep around, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 4: and then set stuff on it and, you know. Well,
- 8:36Speaker 4: they knew that part was already clean and stuff.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Megan's story seemed like a justification. With her husband gone
- 8:43Speaker 1: to prison, she was left overwhelmed with stress and was
- 8:46Speaker 1: deeply influenced by drugs which clouded her state of mind.
- 8:50Speaker 1: But the more the detective spoke with her, the more
- 8:53Speaker 1: their doubts grew.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I was so scared, you know? I don't know what
- 8:58Speaker 4: I was thinking. I have no idea.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Do you remember if the baby was a boy or
- 9:01Speaker 2: a girl? So, did anyone know that you were pregnant?
- 9:07Speaker 4: I don't show at all.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Did you tell Darren?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Had you ever had any stillborn babies prior to that?
- 9:18Speaker 2: And on these miscarriages, did they all happen at home?
- 9:22Speaker 2: All right. Is there anything else that you think I
- 9:27Speaker 2: should have asked you that I haven't asked you? Is
- 9:31Speaker 2: there anything else that you want me to know?
- 9:33Speaker 3: No.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And we really want.
- 9:36Speaker 9: the right thing for this baby, a proper burial and
- 9:40Speaker 9: closure for you and for your family.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Your husband went to prison, you're raising the kids on
- 9:45Speaker 2: your own, and you're overwhelmed. And I can understand that.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I mean, Darren just found out that he had another kid.
- 9:55Speaker 2: What do you think proper closure looks like? Anything else?
- 10:06Speaker 9: Well, it's clear that we think you should go to
- 10:09Speaker 9: jail for this, that you recognize you've done something wrong.
- 10:12Speaker 10: We haven't made any decisions like that. We're still just
- 10:15Speaker 10: trying to put the story together at this point.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Was Megan's fear of going to jail if the baby
- 10:21Speaker 1: was truly a stillborn. If no crime had been committed,
- 10:25Speaker 1: aside from the unlawful disposal of the body, why did
- 10:28Speaker 1: she carry such a heavy guilt? There was something deeper
- 10:32Speaker 1: she wasn't saying, and the detective could feel it. Meanwhile,
- 10:36Speaker 1: at the house, the officers pressed on with their search,
- 10:38Speaker 1: which led them to another suspicious box. Inside, they uncovered
- 10:43Speaker 1: a deeply disturbing scene. That was just the start.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I remember there being some form of tape over it.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And then as we opened it up, there's heavy padding
- 10:54Speaker 3: and packaging, more plastic wrap. As we got deeper into
- 10:57Speaker 3: that box, we did ultimately find a second child. I
- 11:01Speaker 3: felt angry. And I remember thinking, what in the actual
- 11:09Speaker 3: hell is going on?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Each box they opened carried an overpowering stench. with a
- 11:14Speaker 1: strange liquid seeping through the bottom of the bags inside.
- 11:18Speaker 1: The officers immediately reported it to Detective Beckstrom, who confronted
- 11:22Speaker 1: Megan in hopes to get answers, but nothing could have
- 11:25Speaker 1: prepared him for her response.
- 11:27Speaker 9: We have investigators in the house right now. They found
- 11:31Speaker 9: a second baby. Will you please tell me about that?
- 11:35Speaker 4: There is.
- 11:36Speaker 2: There's more.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Hey, I'm sorry. I have hit every one of them,
- 11:39Speaker 4: and he had to have known I was pregnant through.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Most of them. There's others? How many? When?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Megan had a long history of drug abuse, particularly methamphetamine,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and was known to drink heavily as well. These addictions
- 12:05Speaker 1: had ruined her ability to make rational decisions, but they
- 12:08Speaker 1: were no excuse for taking a life. Despite her claims
- 12:11Speaker 1: it was clear she was still hiding something, a truth
- 12:14Speaker 1: so gruesome which would shake everyone to the core.
- 12:17Speaker 9: If it's easier for you to remember, if we want
- 12:19Speaker 9: to start after you had your first child, when you
- 12:22Speaker 9: had the first miscarriage.
- 12:23Speaker 3: One.
- 12:24Speaker 4: right after I moved in. I can't even remember. I
- 12:31Speaker 4: remember when I had the child. They were all stillborn.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Every one of them.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Were they full-term?
- 12:38Speaker 4: No, without me.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Okay, so... How many do you think will we find
- 12:46Speaker 2: in the garage?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Four.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Did you put all four in the garage?
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Did you keep them in the same place.
- 12:59Speaker 4: In the garage?
- 13:00Speaker 2: What did you.
- 13:01Speaker 4: It's covered. Okay.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And so all four boxes are in the same place?
- 13:05Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I just want to be able to.
- 13:07Speaker 10: Relay to the detectives what they're going to find.
- 13:12Speaker 2: And so all four... Yes. And are in the cabinet
- 13:16Speaker 2: in the garage?
- 13:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Why didn't you call for help? I don't know.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I'm afraid people know I'm pregnant.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I mean, this is Utah. It's not common for people
- 13:26Speaker 2: to have a lot of kids.
- 13:26Speaker 4: No, I think I was young because I was so young.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Several years later, though, when you let this happen, I mean,
- 13:33Speaker 2: you're not so young.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I know.
- 13:36Speaker 4: But like I said, the drugs, they seriously, they mess
- 13:40Speaker 4: with me.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Bad.
- 13:42Speaker 2: So you're telling me that because you were on drugs,
- 13:45Speaker 2: you weren't making good decisions?
- 13:46Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Does it feel better to tell the truth?
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 2: All right. I'll talk to you about it.
- 13:56Speaker 1: After hearing that more bodies were hidden in the garage,
- 13:59Speaker 1: Detective Beckstrom quickly contacted the officers on the scene. Over
- 14:04Speaker 1: 20 to 30 officers combed through every inch of the house,
- 14:07Speaker 1: searching for hours. And while the investigation continued, so did
- 14:11Speaker 1: the interrogation.
- 14:14Speaker 2: We've talked about it a lot. I don't know yet.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We haven't made those decisions because we're in search warrants still.
- 14:19Speaker 10: Because of the seriousness of this, they are also going
- 14:22Speaker 10: to obtain a search warrant for your house in West Alley.
- 14:26Speaker 10: Is there anything in that house that we need to
- 14:28Speaker 10: know about before we go up there?
- 14:30Speaker 4: For me, no. All that's up there is my clothes. Okay.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So you have the babies and then the girls the
- 14:39Speaker 2: whole time?
- 14:40Speaker 4: I never moved them or anything. But yeah, they've been
- 14:42Speaker 4: in the garage all the time.
- 14:44Speaker 2: So we're talking eight years ago.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I mean, you told me earlier that.
- 14:49Speaker 9: You put the boxes with the babies in them in
- 14:53Speaker 9: the cabinet. Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Did you ever take them out of that cabinet?
- 14:57Speaker 9: No.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I imagine in the last nine years, stuff's been in
- 15:01Speaker 2: and out of the cupboard.
- 15:01Speaker 4: I didn't think so because I was just there a
- 15:04Speaker 4: month or so ago getting my bed and stuff out
- 15:07Speaker 4: of there, and I've seen.
- 15:08Speaker 2: It sitting there.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:09Speaker 10: And so, did anyone in the world know that the
- 15:13Speaker 10: baby was in the garage?
- 15:15Speaker 4: Okay.
- 15:17Speaker 10: Well, they're saying one of the boxes was on a
- 15:21Speaker 10: stack of shelves next to the cabinet.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Why would it be there?
- 15:25Speaker 4: Unless I moved it or something, but it's not thinking.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Do you know when that might have been?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Before I left, I did. I mean, I haven't been
- 15:35Speaker 4: in that house. Only once since I moved out.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It was painfully evident that this case was far from straightforward.
- 15:42Speaker 1: While it wasn't unheard of for a woman to hide
- 15:44Speaker 1: a pregnancy, but doing so multiple times raised serious doubts.
- 15:49Speaker 1: The idea seemed almost impossible to believe, and as the
- 15:52Speaker 1: detectives pieced things together, a chilling realization began to take shape.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I want to make sure that there's no more weight
- 16:01Speaker 2: on your shoulders, okay? When you have these babies.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yes. Um.
- 16:07Speaker 9: You said after they were born and they were blue
- 16:09Speaker 9: and you were trying to get them to breathe, what
- 16:12Speaker 9: would you do to try to get them to breathe?
- 16:15Speaker 4: Sometimes I was so scared, you know?
- 16:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Sorry, you like shake them, sorry. Like that.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Did you have like the suction cup they used to
- 16:30Speaker 2: clean out their mouths?
- 16:30Speaker 4: You described you had the one in the tub.
- 16:36Speaker 2: That you'd fill the tub and have it? Yeah, I can't, yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Was that baby alive when it was born? I think
- 16:44Speaker 2: it was.
- 16:46Speaker 4: For a short time. What happened? Well, you think if
- 16:49Speaker 4: I have baby in the house, it just cries, you know? Mm-hmm.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Well, you say you think it was for a short time.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Was it moving? Did it start to breathe?
- 17:01Speaker 4: No, it wasn't breathing. I could see a little heartbeat and.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Then it stopped.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Okay. For about how long?
- 17:07Speaker 4: About three and a half. Okay.
- 17:11Speaker 2: The one that you had when he was in prison,
- 17:15Speaker 2: that you were on the toilet. Was that one alive
- 17:18Speaker 2: when it was born?
- 17:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Where were the other two born?
- 17:23Speaker 4: The one on the bed. Okay.
- 17:28Speaker 2: The one on the bed when it was born? Do
- 17:31Speaker 2: you think it might have been alive for a short
- 17:33Speaker 2: time as well? Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Detective Beckstrom was left stunned when Megan finally admitted the unthinkable.
- 17:39Speaker 1: It wasn't an accident, but actual murders. So now he
- 17:43Speaker 1: asked her the final make-or-break question.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Did you kill the baby after I was born? What
- 17:49Speaker 2: we need is the truth. Which one?
- 17:56Speaker 4: No, I was just so scared. I was so drunk,
- 18:01Speaker 4: so bad. I just.
- 18:04Speaker 2: How did you choke him?
- 18:06Speaker 3: Again.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Do you think all four of these babies were alive.
- 18:10Speaker 4: When they were born? I'm pretty sure one of them wasn't.
- 18:15Speaker 2: And did you choke the others?
- 18:17Speaker 4: Yes, I did.
- 18:20Speaker 9: And you put them in a towel, put them in
- 18:22Speaker 9: garbage bags, and then put them in a box and
- 18:24Speaker 9: put them in the garage?
- 18:24Speaker 11: Yes.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So one was dead when it was born and the
- 18:27Speaker 2: other three you choked? And why did you choke them?
- 18:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Scared. I was in shock.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Have you ever told anyone this?
- 18:38Speaker 4: No one's ever told us all.
- 18:41Speaker 2: So when we run DNA tests, will they all be Darren's? Yes,
- 18:44Speaker 2: they will. Is there anything else we need to know about?
- 18:51Speaker 3: No. All right.
- 18:56Speaker 1: As the detective left the room, he could barely contain
- 18:58Speaker 1: the emotions that overwhelmed him. It had been the hardest
- 19:01Speaker 1: interrogation of his career.
- 19:04Speaker 11: Once I'm out of her sight, my hands went to
- 19:06Speaker 11: my knees, and I had to take several breaths to
- 19:09Speaker 11: really process.
- 19:12Speaker 7: Holy.
- 19:13Speaker 2: She had killed these babies.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Back at the crime scene, the officers had been searching
- 19:18Speaker 1: the garage for over three hours, and the unease they
- 19:21Speaker 1: felt couldn't be measured. No one could have predicted what
- 19:24Speaker 1: other surprises lay in store for them.
- 19:27Speaker 3: This was probably one of the longest days in my career.
- 19:30Speaker 3: It was emotionally... straining, physically exhausting. And the feeling in
- 19:38Speaker 3: the air was dread, but also determination to find out
- 19:43Speaker 3: what in the hell actually had happened. Eventually we found
- 19:46Speaker 3: baby number three.
- 19:48Speaker 1: It didn't take long before the officers found the third body,
- 19:51Speaker 1: packed tightly in a box and sealed with layers of
- 19:53Speaker 1: duct tape. When they carefully opened it, they found the
- 19:57Speaker 1: body to be wrapped in a plastic bag and covered
- 19:59Speaker 1: in vinyl. As their search continued, they uncovered a fourth body,
- 20:03Speaker 1: followed by a fifth, hidden under two blankets and two
- 20:06Speaker 1: bath tiles in the bottom left corner of a cubby,
- 20:09Speaker 1: But just when they thought they had seen it all,
- 20:12Speaker 1: the biggest shock was still about to come.
- 20:15Speaker 11: I'm told that there is a fifth baby found at
- 20:17Speaker 11: the home. Now it's becoming almost exhausting. How many could
- 20:22Speaker 11: there be? And what is going on?
- 20:25Speaker 2: All right, Megan, I'm really happy.
- 20:33Speaker 9: With how far you've come, but I'm concerned that you
- 20:36Speaker 9: haven't told me everything.
- 20:37Speaker 2: How many do you think there possibly could be?
- 20:40Speaker 4: Honestly, I don't know how many. Four I can think of,
- 20:44Speaker 4: but I don't.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Okay. They are up to five.
- 20:50Speaker 10: And so now that there's five, are you still only
- 20:54Speaker 10: certain that one of them was dead when it was born?
- 20:56Speaker 2: And so the other four were alive?
- 21:00Speaker 4: There could be more. Like I said, I can't remember
- 21:04Speaker 4: a damn thing.
- 21:05Speaker 2: How many do you think there would be?
- 21:07Speaker 4: I'd say eight or nine.
- 21:16Speaker 2: When they're done searching the garage, they are going to
- 21:18Speaker 2: search the rest of the house. What do they find anymore?
- 21:20Speaker 11: No.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:22Speaker 2: So it could be eight or nine?
- 21:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it could be. But I know there's no more
- 21:25Speaker 4: than that. And I know there's none in the house.
- 21:29Speaker 4: I mean, if you had to smell them, they're in
- 21:30Speaker 4: the house.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:32Speaker 10: Did the smell from the garage ever come in the house?
- 21:34Speaker 2: No. It would just be out in the garage.
- 21:38Speaker 4: People said it was some smell, you know, like in
- 21:41Speaker 4: the heat of the summer. We had cats and stuff and,
- 21:44Speaker 4: you know, and I just, I think it was always
- 21:47Speaker 4: just playing dumb now.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Did you just leave it open?
- 21:49Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And you're saying Darren never knew?
- 21:54Speaker 4: No, when I told you, only me. I've kept this
- 21:56Speaker 4: to myself for 18 years.
- 21:59Speaker 2: So I'm the only person that you've ever told? Yes.
- 22:02Speaker 1: The numbers kept growing, but the officers knew they had
- 22:05Speaker 1: to proceed with caution. The line of questioning soon shifted
- 22:10Speaker 1: as Detective Beckstrom began to consider Darren's possible involvement due
- 22:14Speaker 1: to something Megan had said earlier during the interrogation that
- 22:17Speaker 1: had caught his attention.
- 22:19Speaker 2: When I talked to you earlier, you mentioned that Darren
- 22:23Speaker 2: should have known. What do you mean by that? Did
- 22:25Speaker 2: you tell her?
- 22:26Speaker 4: No. I don't know why. I think my mind was
- 22:31Speaker 4: just so out of it, you know? I didn't even,
- 22:34Speaker 4: all I focused on was the next fix. But how
- 22:37Speaker 4: can you not know? How can you sleep with someone
- 22:41Speaker 4: every night and not know that?
- 22:44Speaker 9: When we're talking about Darren knowing that you were pregnant
- 22:47Speaker 9: because he's in your bed, those are miscarriages.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So did you just tell him that you miscarried? Yeah. Okay.
- 22:56Speaker 9: And so when you told him that it was a miscarriage,
- 22:59Speaker 9: he never asked what you did with the.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Miscarriage?
- 23:05Speaker 1: It was hard to believe that Darren had simply stumbled
- 23:07Speaker 1: upon the body in his garage without any clue where
- 23:10Speaker 1: it could have come from. Could he have known more
- 23:13Speaker 1: than he was letting on? Meanwhile, back at the crime scene,
- 23:17Speaker 1: officers made another grim discovery. The sixth and seventh bodies
- 23:21Speaker 1: wrapped in sweaters and stuffed into a box inside a cabinet.
- 23:25Speaker 1: It was a moment that left everyone reeling, but they
- 23:28Speaker 1: still pressed on to determine if there were more than seven.
- 23:31Speaker 1: They even searched Megan's former home in West Valley. leaving
- 23:34Speaker 1: no stone unturned. While they found no additional bodies, they
- 23:39Speaker 1: did uncover Xanax, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, painting a bleak
- 23:43Speaker 1: picture of her life. Megan Huntsman was arrested and booked
- 23:47Speaker 1: into the Utah County Jail on six counts of murder. However,
- 23:51Speaker 1: the case was far from complete. Still, there were pieces
- 23:54Speaker 1: of the puzzle that didn't quite fit, and to fill
- 23:57Speaker 1: in the gaps, investigators brought Darren in for questioning.
- 24:01Speaker 10: I'm just like, I'm damned extra much, so I'm trying
- 24:02Speaker 10: to talk to everybody and make sure I know that
- 24:04Speaker 10: it's been.
- 24:07Speaker 2: A horrible day for a lot of you. So you're
- 24:11Speaker 2: not in trouble right now. I'm just trying to understand
- 24:13Speaker 2: everything that's happened.
- 24:15Speaker 10: So she's saying that that baby was a miscarriage after
- 24:20Speaker 10: it went in prison.
- 24:21Speaker 2: That's what she told me. Is that what she's still saying?
- 24:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:25Speaker 2: We did go search one in the house, and there's
- 24:28Speaker 2: more than one. And so, how many times was your
- 24:34Speaker 2: wife pregnant? I have three daughters. And I know of
- 24:40Speaker 2: one other time that she had a miscarriage.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I never even knew she was pregnant with two of
- 24:46Speaker 6: my daughters until she was.
- 24:48Speaker 2: About four or five months along. And then she told me,
- 24:51Speaker 2: you know, I don't know. There's... How many was there?
- 24:59Speaker 2: There was seven. You are kidding me.
- 25:02Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 25:07Speaker 2: She said that the first one was shortly after you
- 25:11Speaker 2: moved into the house.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And that the last one, she was pregnant by you
- 25:20Speaker 2: before you went to prison. Wait, so she says they're
- 25:22Speaker 2: all mine? That's what she says. And that's why I'm
- 25:25Speaker 2: glad you're here, because....
- 25:30Speaker 9: I would have thought that if she was pregnant seven
- 25:32Speaker 9: times in the ten-year.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Period that you lived in that house, that surely you
- 25:38Speaker 2: would have known. Holy....
- 25:44Speaker 1: Darren was visibly shaken by the disturbing revelations. He buried
- 25:48Speaker 1: his face in his hands and began to sob as
- 25:50Speaker 1: the weight of the situation hit him hard. But despite
- 25:54Speaker 1: his tears, there was more he needed to explain.
- 25:57Speaker 2: You said you knew that she was pregnant once. Are
- 26:00Speaker 2: you talking about one other time than the miscarriage or
- 26:03Speaker 2: are you talking about something else? I just, that's the
- 26:07Speaker 2: only time I know.
- 26:10Speaker 6: I was so messed up on freaking drugs and I
- 26:13Speaker 6: don't know what was going on.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I can tell that you know about more than the
- 26:18Speaker 2: way you're telling me.
- 26:21Speaker 10: Megan hid pregnancies from everybody until shortly before she had kids.
- 26:27Speaker 2: But you're saying that she told you when she was
- 26:29Speaker 2: four months.
- 26:29Speaker 9: Along I believe that you knew about these pregnancies.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I swear to God I never knew about these pregnancies.
- 26:38Speaker 2: What's happened here is tragic. But I don't think that
- 26:45Speaker 2: you killed these babies and hit them. I think that
- 26:50Speaker 2: you were married to a woman who was going to
- 26:52Speaker 2: do it her way.
- 26:56Speaker 10: And you were done fighting with her, and so you
- 26:59Speaker 10: allowed her to make these decisions.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Is that what happened?
- 27:02Speaker 5: I never would think that she would put babies in
- 27:10Speaker 5: a box and freaking... So what did you think she
- 27:13Speaker 5: was doing with these pregnancies? I didn't realize she was
- 27:20Speaker 5: pregnant seven freaking times.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I'm a married man. You know your wife's pregnant.
- 27:26Speaker 9: And so she's telling me that the only one that
- 27:31Speaker 9: you weren't around for.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Is when you went to prison.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Honestly, God, I didn't know that there were seven babies
- 27:40Speaker 5: in my garage.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I never knew there was one in there. Do you
- 27:43Speaker 2: think I would have gone out and cleaned the garage
- 27:45Speaker 2: and then, you know what I mean? I understand where
- 27:47Speaker 2: you're coming from.
- 27:47Speaker 10: I'm not saying you knew they were in the garage,
- 27:50Speaker 10: but I'm saying you had to know that they were
- 27:51Speaker 10: brought into the world.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Even though Darren claimed he had no idea about the pregnancies,
- 27:57Speaker 1: the detective wasn't ready to accept it at face value.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Your wife has admitted to some crimes, some horrible things.
- 28:06Speaker 2: She admits that she killed someone after they were born.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Like I said, she's being completely honest, but I really
- 28:14Speaker 2: wish you were too. What do you want me to say? I...
- 28:21Speaker 2: I didn't know she.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Was killing kids and I didn't know she was putting boxes.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I don't know how they do it. I don't know
- 28:27Speaker 2: how she could give birth and then... I don't know.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Were you there when any of these were born?
- 28:41Speaker 7: No, sir.
- 28:44Speaker 3: No, sir.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I swear.
- 28:47Speaker 9: What we want to do is we want to do
- 28:49Speaker 9: what's right and we want to have closure for these children.
- 28:52Speaker 7: We want to have closure for your kids that are alive.
- 28:56Speaker 7: For these babies' grandparents. I mean, these babies were in
- 29:03Speaker 7: a garage for years.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I never knew that, no. I never knew that.
- 29:13Speaker 6: I don't want to say nothing else. This is looking bad.
- 29:18Speaker 6: I had no idea that she was... Killing kids and
- 29:21Speaker 6: putting them in boxes. I swear to God.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Okay. But I want an attorney, though. Wouldn't you? I
- 29:29Speaker 2: can't give you that advice. I'm not in your situation,
- 29:32Speaker 2: and I don't think I ever will be.
- 29:34Speaker 4: No, you won't.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So....
- 29:37Speaker 3: Okay.
- 29:38Speaker 10: All right, hold on just a second.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Although Darren seemed like a potential suspect in the case,
- 29:45Speaker 1: there was no evidence to link him to the murders. Eventually,
- 29:48Speaker 1: Darren requested an attorney, bringing the interrogation to an abrupt end.
- 29:53Speaker 1: What worked in his favor was a simple but strong point.
- 29:57Speaker 1: If he had known about the bodies in the garage,
- 29:59Speaker 1: It was unlikely he would have started cleaning it so
- 30:01Speaker 1: soon after his release from prison. Darren was released from custody,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and the investigation moved forward with Megan still behind bars.
- 30:10Speaker 1: All the evidence collected from the garage, including the boxes,
- 30:14Speaker 1: plastic bags, and layers of duct tape, was sent to
- 30:17Speaker 1: the lab for analysis, and the results were conclusive. Every
- 30:22Speaker 1: single fingerprint belonged to Megan. Not a trace of Darren's
- 30:25Speaker 1: prints was found on any of the items. With this,
- 30:28Speaker 1: the focus shifted to the medical examiner, where DNA testing
- 30:31Speaker 1: was conducted to confirm the father of the babies. The
- 30:35Speaker 1: results were as expected. Darren was the biological father of
- 30:39Speaker 1: all seven children. However, one heartbreaking fact remained clear. During
- 30:44Speaker 1: their entire ten years of living together, and even after
- 30:47Speaker 1: he went to prison in 2006, Darren had no idea
- 30:51Speaker 1: he had fathered seven children. Megan had hidden everything from
- 30:55Speaker 1: him and everyone else. It was now time for the
- 30:58Speaker 1: final decision.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Justice for six babies killed right after birth by their
- 31:04Speaker 3: own mother as she pleads guilty to six counts of murder.
- 31:07Speaker 1: And the judge gave her the maximum sentence that could
- 31:09Speaker 1: keep her locked up for the rest of her life.
- 31:12Speaker 1: On February 12, 2015, Megan was formally charged with six
- 31:17Speaker 1: counts of first-degree murder. Having admitted to killing six of
- 31:20Speaker 1: her children while claiming one was stillborn, she was sentenced
- 31:24Speaker 1: to six terms of five years to life. to be
- 31:26Speaker 1: served consecutively, which meant she would spend the rest of
- 31:29Speaker 1: her life in prison. The case left everyone involved deeply shaken.
- 31:35Speaker 1: It was incomprehensible how a mother could commit such horrific acts.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It also highlighted the devastating impact of drugs, which had
- 31:43Speaker 1: completely destroyed Megan's mental health and led her down this
- 31:46Speaker 1: dark and tragic path.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Megan had a family that she was raising But on
- 31:52Speaker 3: the flip side of that coin, she also had seven
- 31:55Speaker 3: dead children in her garage that she had murdered. I
- 32:00Speaker 3: don't know what her motive was. I don't care what
- 32:02Speaker 3: her motive was. But the fact of the matter is,
- 32:06Speaker 3: is she did it. And that was unfathomable to me.
- 32:11Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on this case? Was it just
- 32:13Speaker 1: drugs which led to Megan killing her children? Or were
- 32:16Speaker 1: there some other dark motives? How did Darren not know
- 32:19Speaker 1: anything about his wife's pregnancies after living together for 10 years?
- 32:24Speaker 1: We'd love to hear from you. If there's a case
- 32:26Speaker 1: you'd like us to cover, don't hesitate to drop your
- 32:29Speaker 1: recommendations in the comments section below. Until next time, stay safe,
- 32:34Speaker 1: and keep your eyes peeled for the next mystery to unfold.
