Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke. I'm your
- 0:04Speaker 1: host Coleen Wits, and today we have in the building
- 0:08Speaker 1: music artists, philosopher entrepreneur Larussell, and I am truly excited.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Nothing made my day more than like what two days
- 0:19Speaker 1: ago when your crew I think his crew confirmed like
- 0:21Speaker 1: two or three days ago, and it literally they were like,
- 0:24Speaker 1: holy why are you so silent? You're supposed to be happy.
- 0:26Speaker 1: And I was like, well, I'm just making sure you
- 0:28Speaker 1: tell me the date because if you tell me a
- 0:29Speaker 1: month from now, I'm not getting excited because just in
- 0:32Speaker 1: case something happens. And she was like, so you're happy,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I said, what's the date two days from now? I said, hell, yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm happy. Girl Danks shout outs and Nicole from the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Black Effect for booking you. Super happy to have you.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I love the name of your company and I love
- 0:46Speaker 1: what you're about. I'm the name of his company is
- 0:49Speaker 1: called good Come Penny as in coints, which I was like,
- 0:54Speaker 1: ooh ooh, that's different, I said, Man, Larussell's hitting us
- 0:59Speaker 1: with so much intech. Do you remind me of a
- 1:01Speaker 1: cross between jay Z and Drake and anyone that has
- 1:03Speaker 1: not heard your music or kind of even try to
- 1:06Speaker 1: cyberspy on you. It was like really missing out, like
- 1:09Speaker 1: on some good stuff. But since I have you in
- 1:12Speaker 1: my kitchen, the eating while broke kitchen, I have to
- 1:15Speaker 1: know what were you eating when you.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Were broke man. Today I'm going to be making an
- 1:21Speaker 2: egg sandwich. This was a classic. My mama taught me
- 1:24Speaker 2: how to make eggs when I was like five, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: I used to wake up every morning and make eggs,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and that was the only thing I knew how to make.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So we taking it back to the basics. We got
- 1:34Speaker 2: some eggs, we got some salt and pepper. Today we're
- 1:37Speaker 2: gonna be doing it on garlic bread. Yeah, because I
- 1:40Speaker 2: usually use regular bread, we just throw it in a toaster.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But my boy Austin was like, you gotta do garlic bread,
- 1:45Speaker 2: so I figured we just spice it up today.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah, we had a whole discussion about the whole garlic bread,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you and I because I've actually never even thought of
- 2:16Speaker 1: garlic bread. Actually, the first time I ever had garlic
- 2:18Speaker 1: bread for real, for real was the Texas toast in
- 2:21Speaker 1: the box. And now if you go into a store,
- 2:24Speaker 1: it is sold out, like you can't get it.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It's a miracle if you find.
- 2:28Speaker 1: One, maybe on eBay, but I don't know the pandemic.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Just like said, take away the best bread on earth.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But I'm excited to eat with you, so let's get
- 2:39Speaker 1: it cracking. Oh my gosh, an egg fun.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Let's get it cracked all right?
- 2:45Speaker 1: Oh. I listened to rap music so much that my
- 2:52Speaker 1: girlfriend and I shout out to a lap behind the
- 2:56Speaker 1: mirror over there. I listened to rap soap music so
- 2:59Speaker 1: much that I actually speak in metaphors, and sometimes people
- 3:03Speaker 1: have to stop me and say, coly, we get it.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You know, you don't have to, you don't have to
- 3:07Speaker 1: rebreak it down in puzzle terms.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You know, I'm a metaphor speakers. Can I move this
- 3:12Speaker 2: so I can crack some eggs?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Here? Slide over to my side the greatest?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Are you eating one too? So I should make all.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh, you have to cook for both of us, because
- 3:22Speaker 1: if it's trash, we can both discover that garlic bread
- 3:26Speaker 1: egg sandwiches is.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Just not I'm finna drop some butter up in here
- 3:29Speaker 2: because my mama would be like, use some pam so
- 3:32Speaker 2: you don't leave eggs stained all over there.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Now, are you one of those people that are really
- 3:37Speaker 1: gonna use metal on a.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, yeah, I do. We're not supposed to do that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Even every listener is hearing that scratching is like, what
- 3:47Speaker 1: is he doing?
- 3:48Speaker 3: That's crazy?
- 3:49Speaker 1: What is he doing? His mama couldn't have ever let
- 3:51Speaker 1: him do that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Man, she did.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You wouldn't believe how much stuff my mom let me do.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Let I don't mean we had taflon back then. Maybe
- 4:03Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You're right, it was like a luxury. I'm sure. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 1: back then I think it was.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You're right.
- 4:10Speaker 1: You just had to butter everything down otherwise it's stuck.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Or you get that good old pam spray and you
- 4:16Speaker 2: in it. Oh, I'm getting it all over there.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not a I'm not a you know, So
- 4:23Speaker 1: tell me a little bit about what was going on.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I know this is like the first dish that you
- 4:28Speaker 1: ever cooked, But tell me what was going on during
- 4:31Speaker 1: the time.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Of Also, I usually add bacon, beet bacon bits, and
- 4:36Speaker 2: chaddar cheese.
- 4:37Speaker 3: But I heard y'all broke, so it wasn't a here.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So we're gonna go pepper. I don't see salt over here.
- 4:45Speaker 3: There's lorryes, y'all struggling.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Hey, Yo, so much fun of us over here. Yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you're not even gonna use Lorries because you don't.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Now, I'm not gonna use Larry I've never done that.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I'm trying to keep it authentic.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Wow. Okay, okay, I respect it to be honest. I
- 5:04Speaker 1: don't use Lowry's. Well, I just started to recently, but
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's only because I married a black man from Detroit
- 5:13Speaker 1: who believes.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Lowry's is everything seasoning. Yeah, yes, yes, beautiful.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So what was going on growing up? Like around when
- 5:25Speaker 1: you were making egg sandwiches? I know you started at five,
- 5:28Speaker 1: you know, making these, but like kind of tell me
- 5:30Speaker 1: a little bit of your background growing up, Like were
- 5:32Speaker 1: you middle class?
- 5:36Speaker 2: I thought I was middle class until I got older
- 5:40Speaker 2: and realized we're definitely lower middle class. But my pops
- 5:44Speaker 2: was a hustler, so we were like we had enough
- 5:47Speaker 2: money to be like the richest niggas in a broke
- 5:50Speaker 2: neighborhood type shit you feel me, but definitely, uh, lower class,
- 5:56Speaker 2: just regular neighborhood. Hard to describe when people ask that
- 6:01Speaker 2: question because you got to kind of grow up in
- 6:03Speaker 2: it to be familiar.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Did you grow up in a two parent household?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Wow Okay, okay, a lot of people on the show,
- 6:12Speaker 1: they haven't.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'm going in.
- 6:16Speaker 1: That's good. So when did you transition to music.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I've been writing since I was like seven, whether through
- 6:26Speaker 2: like writing poems or just journaling, drawing, just I've just
- 6:32Speaker 2: always used kind of writing an art as like an
- 6:35Speaker 2: artistic expression and form. So yeah, since I was seven,
- 6:40Speaker 2: and it's kind of just cultivated. Me and my sister
- 6:43Speaker 2: had this boombox and we used to download instrumentals from
- 6:47Speaker 2: LimeWire and burn them on the CD, the instrumentals on
- 6:51Speaker 2: the boom box and wrap over it. And I remember
- 6:53Speaker 2: we had a wrapped over knock if you Buck and
- 6:56Speaker 2: I was going crazy, but my sister was better than
- 6:58Speaker 2: me at the time, so I just had to keep working.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Your sister was rapping too.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah, my sister was rapping too.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So does she still rap?
- 7:07Speaker 3: No, she doesn't.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So you surpassed her in the rap skills. And then
- 7:11Speaker 1: she was like, I'm good. Is that what happened? I don't.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I don't think she ever had a passion for it. It
- 7:16Speaker 2: was just something we like to play around and do,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and I just kind of stuck with it.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay, that's pretty cool. So you is it
- 7:26Speaker 1: that you like Drake because it like from what I've
- 7:30Speaker 1: researched on you, is that you from other articles and
- 7:34Speaker 1: you could correct me if I'm wrong, But your goal
- 7:38Speaker 1: was to be on the level I want to say,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and on the I don't know, like numbers level, because
- 7:46Speaker 1: obviously talent wise, you're on the same level as Drake,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but I'm saying numbers wise, you want to be on
- 7:53Speaker 1: the same level. But independently, Yeah, is that correct?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Not necessarily numbers wise, but impacting notoriety wise. You know,
- 8:03Speaker 2: I want people to respect me as such, and partially
- 8:07Speaker 2: the way to do that is to put up the numbers.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:09Speaker 2: If you're not scoring as well as Jordan, people don't
- 8:12Speaker 2: expect you respect you like a Jordan, right, And yeah,
- 8:16Speaker 2: to do that independently and just show people that it's
- 8:18Speaker 2: possible to be the greatest at something without having to
- 8:23Speaker 2: utilize someone else's infrastructure that they tell you you got
- 8:26Speaker 2: to go through and you got to use these methods
- 8:28Speaker 2: and you got to sell away your ownership, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 2: like everyone knows early on Drake didn't have his masters
- 8:34Speaker 2: and had a horrible deal. I want to show people
- 8:37Speaker 2: that you can get to that level without having to
- 8:39Speaker 2: go through that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Right when you say, just want to rewind, you said
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was important for you to have impact and notoriety,
- 8:47Speaker 1: Like why what does that even mean to me?
- 8:52Speaker 2: It just it enables you to to It enables you
- 8:57Speaker 2: to make change, Like right now, feed the whole hood
- 9:01Speaker 2: where I'm from. You know, from now to the end
- 9:03Speaker 2: of the year, I've been feeding the hood out of
- 9:04Speaker 2: my own pocket. And I've only been able to do
- 9:07Speaker 2: that because of my impact and my notoriety. I've become
- 9:10Speaker 2: so great that I make enough money to where I
- 9:12Speaker 2: could take care of the place that birth me right,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and a lot of people don't get to do that
- 9:18Speaker 2: because they don't have either the talent level or the
- 9:20Speaker 2: resource to do it. I've been able to do it independently.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I'm finna drop this garlic bread on this joint.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's already it's already done, already toasted it.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And oh that's crazy.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I try to cheat it because I wanted to
- 9:32Speaker 1: get all up in your kool aid. Wow, so I
- 9:35Speaker 1: put the temple because you can't find.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That anywhere intriguing.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Let's try it. Let's be a team here. Dang, why
- 9:47Speaker 1: do we have to break from your story though, right?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Is this not the hardest interview process?
- 9:53Speaker 3: This is great, this is great. I'm a multitasker.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna try this too. All right, So we get
- 9:59Speaker 1: the bread everyone, we're getting the garlic bread situation together
- 10:03Speaker 1: and we're putting eggs in it.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Yeah, this is new. I've never had this. Shout out all.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Star for you have to turn off the store.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yep, let me get right on there.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Berthie was talking is mess about us being broke?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Now, well, I was going to put garlic bread on there,
- 10:19Speaker 2: but you know, you guys did it, so okay, I
- 10:21Speaker 2: completely forgot you were.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Going to actually make it. You don't even know how
- 10:24Speaker 1: to make garlic bread, do you.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I mean I use Texas toes, so I was just
- 10:29Speaker 2: going to throw it up on that joint and then
- 10:31Speaker 2: it does what it does and you're.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Good after.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I's trying. Okay, let's go back to notoriety and impact
- 10:39Speaker 1: and you feeding your community. Yes, okay, stealing all your eggs, buddy,
- 10:48Speaker 1: All right, here we go. Do you want to sample
- 10:51Speaker 1: it first before we get into the nuts and bolts.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Sure, all right, let's try and see here we good?
- 11:09Speaker 3: It did. It's a lot of bread.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think Texas garlic.
- 11:14Speaker 3: It Texas.
- 11:16Speaker 1: At least we now know we actually I now know
- 11:21Speaker 1: how to do it in the future. But there's way
- 11:23Speaker 1: too much bread.
- 11:24Speaker 3: On this one, way too much bread. It's like a
- 11:26Speaker 3: bread with a side of eggs. It's actually garlic, a
- 11:32Speaker 3: garlic bread sandwich.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Would you ever serve the almost mm hmmm. That could
- 11:39Speaker 1: be an idea, but with dinner bread, right, yeah, look
- 11:44Speaker 1: at me? Do I Can we call it the eating
- 11:46Speaker 1: while Brooks? No, that would probably be horrible. Hunts to
- 11:48Speaker 1: name it the eating wall broke sandwich while you're at
- 11:50Speaker 1: a pay pay as you go? Is it pay as
- 11:53Speaker 1: you go or pay what you.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Want, pay what you want? Proud to pay?
- 11:56Speaker 1: Well, come sit sit with me so I can get
- 11:59Speaker 1: all up in your I know he jumped off camera
- 12:02Speaker 1: on that one. Right, fine, it's fine, real life, real life.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So let's go into Momos cafe for a second. What
- 12:15Speaker 1: inspired all of that? Mm hmmm, or at least a partner.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Just seeing the need.
- 12:27Speaker 2: There's a lot of homeless in Valoe and just people
- 12:30Speaker 2: who don't get to eat. And I'm always outside so
- 12:33Speaker 2: I always see it. I'm always giving someone money or
- 12:36Speaker 2: taking care of someone, whether my mom would drop off
- 12:39Speaker 2: boxes of merch to the homeless community out there, to
- 12:43Speaker 2: different encampments, and I'm just always trying to help, right,
- 12:48Speaker 2: And this is the way that we can help now
- 12:49Speaker 2: that I'm in a grander position.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I've done a.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Few of these prior this year, but just for a day.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And when you do it today, it's like, everybody don't
- 12:57Speaker 2: get a chance to eat. So this time it was like,
- 12:59Speaker 2: let's make sure everybody gets a chance to eat.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think what you're doing is great. I'm
- 13:06Speaker 1: gonna circle back to your music again. So you're a
- 13:11Speaker 1: talented artist. Again, for anyone that hasn't heard your music,
- 13:16Speaker 1: I definitely would say you're in the same lay as
- 13:18Speaker 1: jay Z and Drake, which, by the way, I'm a
- 13:22Speaker 1: hardcore jay Z fan. Everyone that listens to this show
- 13:24Speaker 1: knows this. I have a huge five foot painting that's
- 13:28Speaker 1: literally the only one in the world that was custom
- 13:30Speaker 1: made of jay Z like hanging out in projects. I'm
- 13:33Speaker 1: from Brooklyn.
- 13:35Speaker 3: There it goes.
- 13:36Speaker 1: But I will say this in all truest form. Currently,
- 13:43Speaker 1: over the last couple of years, I listen to Drake
- 13:45Speaker 1: more and I feel guilty.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I feel like I'm cheating.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Like for real, Like I don't let nobody know that,
- 13:51Speaker 1: Like nobody knows that. This is the first time I've
- 13:53Speaker 1: said it out loud, but in my heart, I'm like, yo, just.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Listen to jay Z today. Don't and you don't have
- 13:58Speaker 3: to always pick Drake, but.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I listened to your lyrics. I'm just wondering, like, what did?
- 14:03Speaker 1: Have you ever been signed?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Not in the capacity that artists get signed, like I've
- 14:11Speaker 2: never been signed to a major deal.
- 14:13Speaker 3: All of my deals have been partnerships, like distribution deals.
- 14:17Speaker 2: No, I've done like record deals, but in partnership for them,
- 14:20Speaker 2: like fifty to fifty profit shares, like I don't belong
- 14:24Speaker 2: to anyone. I'm my own entity and we just split
- 14:27Speaker 2: profit versus when a record label usually signs to you,
- 14:30Speaker 2: you're in like a royalty deal and they own your shit.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And if they don't own your shit, they license it
- 14:34Speaker 2: for twenty years and they have power and rule over
- 14:37Speaker 2: when you release and how you release any of that.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So I've never been in a major deal. All of
- 14:42Speaker 2: my deals have been partnerships.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Currently, are you in a partnership deal or are you independent?
- 14:47Speaker 2: I've been independent the entire time, So all of these
- 14:50Speaker 2: partnerships are completely like me and my team do everything.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You see, you're controlling all the marketing everything. So and
- 14:57Speaker 1: they're controlling because nowadays it's a little confusing a record
- 15:00Speaker 1: label is really bringing to the table at this point.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It depends now I mean with I mean if oh
- 15:08Speaker 1: my gosh, why am I spacing when it comes to
- 15:11Speaker 1: who is Draked in Lil Wayne? And what's their name
- 15:13Speaker 1: of their young Money is it? No, it's not young Money,
- 15:17Speaker 1: it's race but no, no, no, he was signed to
- 15:23Speaker 1: Lil Wayne, who was the cash So they're so from
- 15:29Speaker 1: what I know of the history of uh, the music industry,
- 15:33Speaker 1: Birdman had the best deal in the industry. So young Money,
- 15:39Speaker 1: cash Money has literally the best deals on the table.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Cash money, cash money.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So if cash Money calls you up right now, I'm
- 15:50Speaker 1: just playing it. It was advocate with.
- 15:51Speaker 2: No to see there's a cash Money had the best
- 15:56Speaker 2: deal in terms of their deal with Republic, not in
- 16:00Speaker 2: terms of the deals that they gave artists.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Really, you don't think they gave artists really.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Good deals, No, because they Drake didn't have his masters.
- 16:07Speaker 3: He just got him.
- 16:07Speaker 2: He was in the royalty deal. Lil Wayne had to
- 16:09Speaker 2: take him to court to get his money. How could
- 16:12Speaker 2: they be in a great deal? O tig has been
- 16:15Speaker 2: complaining for years, How could they be in a great
- 16:18Speaker 2: deal that doesn't make any sense?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah I didn't know that.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah cash Money had a substantial deal, you know.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Wen dy Day was a part of helping put that
- 16:27Speaker 2: together with Republic. They really broke the bank.
- 16:30Speaker 1: When did you So you're a music artist. What is
- 16:34Speaker 1: intriguing about you is, for instance, today we gave you
- 16:38Speaker 1: a release, Clarence, and you sat there quietly.
- 16:44Speaker 3: And read it.
- 16:45Speaker 1: You're a businessman all the way through. So were do
- 16:48Speaker 1: you think you're an entrepreneur before you were an artist?
- 16:50Speaker 3: Definitely? Definitely.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Before I was releasing art, I was selling beats, I
- 16:56Speaker 2: was making album covers for people and selling I've been
- 17:01Speaker 2: I used to sell swishers one of your parents basketball team. Yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 2: my pops was a hustler. He sold everything under the
- 17:08Speaker 2: sun except drugs, like everything.
- 17:10Speaker 1: It was going to be my next question because when
- 17:11Speaker 1: I hear hustler, I'm like, what was he saying? There?
- 17:13Speaker 3: No, man, everything exactly.
- 17:16Speaker 1: So you got your entrepreneur spirit from him, and then
- 17:19Speaker 1: your talent gross kind of came from you and your
- 17:22Speaker 1: sister like in this.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Boombox kind of my pops as well.
- 17:27Speaker 2: He's very creatively inclined, right, and he's a problem solver, right.
- 17:32Speaker 2: And I feel like a part of my talent and
- 17:34Speaker 2: just my skill, my business acumen is because I'm a
- 17:37Speaker 2: problem solver. My favorite thing to say is I'll figure
- 17:40Speaker 2: it out, and I will.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, spoken like a true entrepreneur. You know
- 17:44Speaker 1: how to pivot, right, Yeah, that's whenever I see a problem,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I'm always like, it's not a problem, it's a challenge, right,
- 17:51Speaker 1: what to do?
- 17:52Speaker 2: I was I was walking to get my daughter the
- 17:54Speaker 2: other day and I was talking with my brother and
- 17:57Speaker 2: I was like, man, are you looking for problems or
- 17:59Speaker 2: are you looking for You usually find whatever you're looking for.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I like that, you know what you say, how I think.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I think that's why I like you so much. I genuinely,
- 18:14Speaker 1: I genuinely fuck with you hard do I say fuck
- 18:17Speaker 1: on the show ever? Really, I genuinely mess with you.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I was just like, yo, is he as dope? So
- 18:24Speaker 1: what I've learned being a Christian and just living in
- 18:27Speaker 1: the world is like, there's so many dope people that
- 18:30Speaker 1: are doing great things externally. But now that I'm old, older,
- 18:36Speaker 1: I've grown enough. Wasn't the to ask myself, well, if
- 18:38Speaker 1: they're externally have all this integrity? I just wonder, like
- 18:42Speaker 1: if I was a fly on their wall at home,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, do they carry that same level of integrity.
- 18:49Speaker 1: When I listen to some of your rap lyrics, I'm like, Okay,
- 18:53Speaker 1: they're great. And then there's some that teeter into like
- 18:56Speaker 1: how you enjoy women in the past. I don't know
- 19:01Speaker 1: if it's current. I don't know. You know, it's hard
- 19:04Speaker 1: being a man. I'm not a man, So I just wondering, Like.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I think, if you are a fly on the wall
- 19:10Speaker 2: in my house, you'd see a human and supreme form
- 19:13Speaker 2: right in every aspect, on their roller coaster and on
- 19:16Speaker 2: their journey. I think there's everyone around me could speak
- 19:20Speaker 2: to my heart and my greatness and my moral and
- 19:24Speaker 2: my character. But I also have issues as a human
- 19:28Speaker 2: as well that I have to develop from and that
- 19:30Speaker 2: I've had to grow from just through a journey. Right,
- 19:33Speaker 2: Like you, you learn self respect and you learn value,
- 19:39Speaker 2: and you learn respecting other people throughout your journey, depending
- 19:42Speaker 2: on your experience and your surrounding and what you witness. Right,
- 19:46Speaker 2: most of us just replicate whatever we see if you
- 19:49Speaker 2: don't see anybody in like loving and nurturing situations and
- 19:52Speaker 2: providing that, you don't often replicate it, right, because that's
- 19:55Speaker 2: not something you're familiar with, So just through that process.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Of course, I'm a human, but I think for the
- 20:02Speaker 2: most part, what you see externally of me is what
- 20:06Speaker 2: you see and when you meet me, I'm the exact
- 20:08Speaker 2: same person.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Right when I hear your lyrics, you're I feel like
- 20:15Speaker 1: you're vulnerable, You're you're honest with yourself, and I think
- 20:19Speaker 1: for a lot of men, I don't want to say
- 20:21Speaker 1: a lot of men, for humans, I think we we
- 20:25Speaker 1: tend to either tell ourselves the truth or we tell
- 20:27Speaker 1: ourselves a lie, and it's the battle of you know,
- 20:31Speaker 1: but the only way to grow is to tell yourself
- 20:34Speaker 1: the truth. So there's a lot of vulnerability in your lyrics,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and I love it like I love it well the
- 20:39Speaker 1: same reason why I love a lot of y'all. You know,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you are my top three, you know. Come, so now
- 20:46Speaker 1: I do do snooping. Obviously I had to cyberstalk the
- 20:50Speaker 1: hell out of you, but I noticed you were, like,
- 20:54Speaker 1: if you're a fan of mine, you come directly to me,
- 20:59Speaker 1: Like how how did you even conceive that concept of like,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you want to come to my show, you buy the
- 21:04Speaker 1: tickets from me, no ticket mass and no middle man,
- 21:06Speaker 1: Like where did that come from?
- 21:10Speaker 3: Life?
- 21:11Speaker 2: That's always been the process, you know, Like I've watched
- 21:14Speaker 2: my dad hustle, and everyone who bought product from him
- 21:17Speaker 2: pulled up on him or he pulled up on them.
- 21:20Speaker 2: If you want something from Larussell, you have to go
- 21:22Speaker 2: communicate with Larussell. When you start adding third parties, you
- 21:26Speaker 2: could either miss opportunity or something get misplaced. Like I
- 21:29Speaker 2: used to do booking for a theater and I was
- 21:32Speaker 2: trying to book certain artists and I'd have to go
- 21:34Speaker 2: through their agents and It'll be like a caaw whatever.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Sometimes they shut you down, get.
- 21:40Speaker 2: To it, and then when I meet them later, I'm like, bro,
- 21:42Speaker 2: I was trying to get you for it would have
- 21:44Speaker 2: been dope because I was building this thing. And they're like, man,
- 21:46Speaker 2: I didn't even know right, And that's because and they
- 21:49Speaker 2: ain't hollering at you. And then as the more middleman
- 21:52Speaker 2: you have, the more pie that's getting dipped into. And
- 21:55Speaker 2: I'm a firm believer in if I'm splitting pie, it
- 21:58Speaker 2: needs to be with people who help me bake them pie,
- 22:00Speaker 2: not someone who's just there. Because the end of this
- 22:04Speaker 2: is a standard. You need to have a business manager.
- 22:06Speaker 2: You need to have this that like, we're not going
- 22:08Speaker 2: to do that. You got to actually provide something. If
- 22:11Speaker 2: you didn't bring no ingredients or help bake this, you
- 22:13Speaker 2: shouldn't get a slice of it.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Now, you do have a team, because to get to you,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I tried emailing, Okay, I was like, this is the email,
- 22:23Speaker 1: this is how I gets hel But you do have
- 22:25Speaker 1: a team. Do you have a role amongst your team
- 22:26Speaker 1: that they don't get to say no, that you have
- 22:31Speaker 1: to at least they have to at least present the
- 22:32Speaker 1: opportunity to you. Because that's a valid point that happens
- 22:35Speaker 1: in the industry.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Just about everything comes to me. And I may have
- 22:39Speaker 2: seen this. I was telling Austin. No, I'm for sure.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I was telling Austin when it first came I had
- 22:46Speaker 2: seen the show similar and I was like, I don't
- 22:49Speaker 2: know because I seen the time the eating while broke thing,
- 22:51Speaker 2: and I feel like a lot of people play on
- 22:53Speaker 2: like poor people and shit, and I didn't I didn't
- 22:56Speaker 2: like it. So I was just like, ah, I'm not
- 22:58Speaker 2: gonna deal with that right now, let me see as
- 22:59Speaker 2: a cultivate. So I may have seen it. There's not
- 23:02Speaker 2: too much that come through the email that I don't see.
- 23:04Speaker 2: And if I don't see it, my two right hands
- 23:07Speaker 2: always see it and it still makes its way to me.
- 23:10Speaker 3: So with the eating when I broke, that was one
- 23:12Speaker 3: of the reasons.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I was like, ah, the title.
- 23:15Speaker 3: I don't like when people play on the on poverty.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And like, it's just like when I created Eating While Broke,
- 23:23Speaker 1: I I was like, I just I have so many
- 23:28Speaker 1: dope successful friends that are like millionaires, influence celebrities, entrepreneurs,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and they always have these crazy stories like they were
- 23:35Speaker 1: in jail, or they were male escorts or just crazy
- 23:39Speaker 1: ass stories, and I love them. I lived for them.
- 23:41Speaker 1: We go on to hiking, like tell me more, what
- 23:43Speaker 1: else did you do? You're a hugger? Okay, let's here,
- 23:45Speaker 1: you know, And so I just love the journey. I
- 23:49Speaker 1: actually don't even I do enjoy the solutions, but I
- 23:51Speaker 1: love the journey. I love the storytelling. I love the
- 23:54Speaker 1: hero's journey. And so when I came up with Eating
- 23:56Speaker 1: While Broke, I was like, well, we got to start
- 23:58Speaker 1: it at the route. You know that everyone can relate to, like,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know, people that are aspiring rappers that are literally
- 24:04Speaker 1: only have two pennies to rub together. And I named
- 24:06Speaker 1: it Eating while Broke, But then I realized, damn, every
- 24:10Speaker 1: time I pitched the show, I have to say, hey,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I have this great opportunity for you. It's it's ignore
- 24:16Speaker 1: the name. Let me tell you what it is. And
- 24:19Speaker 1: I always have to say, ignore the name, and then
- 24:22Speaker 1: I tell them, you know, the show is about inspiring
- 24:24Speaker 1: people and just kind of leveling with them and inspiring
- 24:27Speaker 1: them that they can do exactly what you did, or
- 24:29Speaker 1: they should believe in themselves no matter what their environment
- 24:31Speaker 1: is in. But I always have to do this dang
- 24:33Speaker 1: explainer right on eating sometimes.
- 24:36Speaker 2: That's why, like certain things would get to me through email,
- 24:39Speaker 2: but since it doesn't have full context, it's like I
- 24:42Speaker 2: can't tend to it right because it doesn't resonate. But
- 24:45Speaker 2: that's why I'm always somebody. I'm so open. If you
- 24:47Speaker 2: see me anywhere, you can come to me and address me.
- 24:50Speaker 2: And once I meet you and feel your energy, it's like, oh, okay,
- 24:53Speaker 2: that makes sense, right, But emails have no context, like
- 24:56Speaker 2: that's just you got to take it for whatever you
- 24:58Speaker 2: want to.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I I'm uh. Pippole told me this once. He said,
- 25:04Speaker 1: if they locked the door, you're climbing through the window.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I was like, oh, he didn't respond. He Nicole better used.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That heart email.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Dropping Charlottemgne you know it's running this show, and uh,
- 25:26Speaker 1: you know, get his attention. Love And not only did
- 25:29Speaker 1: I do that, but I liked you so much. I
- 25:31Speaker 1: literally was like, ear your Leisure should have him, Charlemagne
- 25:35Speaker 1: should have him, all these people should have him, and
- 25:36Speaker 1: she was like, I think they already did. Like I
- 25:40Speaker 1: was like the last ones at the table, like these
- 25:42Speaker 1: are the shows he should be on. I don't even
- 25:44Speaker 1: I don't even never had an opportunity meet with you,
- 25:46Speaker 1: but I was like, dam all your publicists over there,
- 25:48Speaker 1: like this is who I want. Love it and and
- 25:52Speaker 1: that's you know why we named the show, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 1: at the end of the day, eating while broke. But
- 25:57Speaker 1: I get it because I literally every time I sell
- 25:59Speaker 1: some on the idea, I'm like, just ignore the name,
- 26:03Speaker 1: ignore the name. But I'm glad that you take time
- 26:05Speaker 1: to come and sit with me and super excited. I
- 26:08Speaker 1: love literally everything you're about. And sorry. One of the
- 26:15Speaker 1: things that kind of surprised me is the entrepreneur in you.
- 26:23Speaker 4: And like.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Also, like, why did you name your company the good Copenny?
- 26:30Speaker 3: Right?
- 26:31Speaker 2: Well, I mean good company just because there's a quote
- 26:34Speaker 2: that's say your mama say you just by the company
- 26:36Speaker 2: you keep, right, So I feel like good company is
- 26:39Speaker 2: encompassing them. Just I like to have good people around me,
- 26:42Speaker 2: and we build great energy when we go into places.
- 26:44Speaker 2: We're a good company to have, right, Just that name
- 26:48Speaker 2: is welcoming. And then I use pennies because I feel
- 26:50Speaker 2: like pennies are undervalued and overlooked. Right, If you see
- 26:54Speaker 2: a penny on the ground, you usually don't stop and
- 26:56Speaker 2: pick it up. But imagine if you stopped and picked
- 26:58Speaker 2: up every penny you walk past throughout your whole life,
- 27:01Speaker 2: you probably have more money than a lot of the
- 27:02Speaker 2: people besides you. Even though it's a penny. There's a
- 27:05Speaker 2: multitude of them, Like we passed them up all the
- 27:07Speaker 2: time everywhere, and no one really cares. Right, But it
- 27:11Speaker 2: exists for a reason.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I sometimes think pennies exist to go in my daughter's mouth.
- 27:20Speaker 1: That's a terrible joke. I'm a new mom. I'm a
- 27:22Speaker 1: brand new mom. I spend most of my days trying
- 27:25Speaker 1: to convince my daughter not to try a new way
- 27:27Speaker 1: to commit suicide. Right right now, you see why our
- 27:31Speaker 1: parents are like tired by eight o'clock because they spent
- 27:34Speaker 1: the entire day like what do you have to do next?
- 27:39Speaker 1: But what can people expect from you in the future?
- 27:44Speaker 1: Music wise?
- 27:46Speaker 3: A ton of it, A whole lot of it. You know.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I'm someone I live by this theory of like leaving empty.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I don't want to leave with nothing on my plate
- 27:56Speaker 2: and all the music I have I intend to release
- 27:59Speaker 2: and get out. I want to sit on things for years.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I'm currently building crazy infrastructure at home. I keep saying
- 28:07Speaker 2: I'm building Disneyland because we're building something like that completely laterally.
- 28:12Speaker 2: But really, I don't know. I don't have any expectation
- 28:16Speaker 2: of myself. So I think people shouldn't. They should just
- 28:18Speaker 2: enjoy the journey. Like how you say you've been spying,
- 28:21Speaker 2: Like I hope when you spy you're smiling because it's
- 28:23Speaker 2: just it's a hell of a show to watch, you know,
- 28:25Speaker 2: it's a beautiful shavn't got to see too many artists
- 28:28Speaker 2: actually make it in front of us, right, Like we
- 28:31Speaker 2: see the resulting that the label post and share, but
- 28:34Speaker 2: we don't see like them going city to city. Hey, yo,
- 28:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna do a pop up, you know, like we
- 28:39Speaker 2: don't get to see that part of the journey, and
- 28:41Speaker 2: I'm showing all of it. I'm showing us running merch
- 28:44Speaker 2: for filming out.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Of my house.
- 28:45Speaker 2: My mom is dropping them, dropping them off, like I'm
- 28:48Speaker 2: showing the entire process, and we're sharing the gyms along.
- 28:51Speaker 2: So I think people should just stay tuned and this.
- 28:55Speaker 2: We got enough sequels to beat the Fast and Furious series,
- 28:59Speaker 2: you know, like coming.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Like that when you do your pop YouTube pop up shows.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Right, we're doing one tonight.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I just I just got off a plane and I
- 29:08Speaker 2: was like, man, I want to do a show. So
- 29:10Speaker 2: we announced it and now the show tickets have been
- 29:12Speaker 2: selling tonight.
- 29:14Speaker 3: It's going to be at going to be.
- 29:20Speaker 2: This is This one's gonna be special because it's an
- 29:22Speaker 2: unplugged version and it's like live Q and A.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Like people, I'm not gonna lie, like I would love
- 29:30Speaker 1: to go. Please is hearing this?
- 29:37Speaker 2: What's dope about our shows is like this one is
- 29:41Speaker 2: a bit different. But generally with our shows, like I
- 29:44Speaker 2: use the second half of my set to just let
- 29:46Speaker 2: the fans choose the songs they want to hear and
- 29:48Speaker 2: I rap whatever they say they want to hear, right,
- 29:51Speaker 2: So it's like a really interactive show. We did one
- 29:54Speaker 2: in New York and Brooklyn. When we went out there,
- 29:56Speaker 2: it sold out in six hours, five hundred tickets.
- 29:58Speaker 3: So now I'm just kind of of been in.
- 30:01Speaker 2: This wave where it's like I just be like, I
- 30:03Speaker 2: feel like doing it, and we do it and it
- 30:05Speaker 2: usually goes well.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And then who kind of does the logistics?
- 30:10Speaker 2: So myself for Nadi, he's a member of my team.
- 30:13Speaker 2: He helps with booking, Tiata helps with logistics. Millie is
- 30:18Speaker 2: on my team so anytime we go to a tour
- 30:20Speaker 2: route and she kind of plans and.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Give a Guyan girl team, you've bounce.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I like that because sometimes you work with people and
- 30:27Speaker 1: they like Slayholder, Like Charlemagne's company is pretty much ran
- 30:32Speaker 1: by women, Black women, which is amazing by the way
- 30:35Speaker 1: he treats man.
- 30:37Speaker 2: I wouldn't be where I am without women. I have
- 30:40Speaker 2: a team of like the most incredible creative intuit in
- 30:43Speaker 2: women when it comes to just business and everything.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Now, one of the things I did see, and I
- 30:49Speaker 1: could be wrong, maybe lack of research, but I feel
- 30:53Speaker 1: like on one of the things you have posted was like,
- 30:56Speaker 1: if people buy your records, they have like some kind
- 30:58Speaker 1: of ownership in it.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so not necessarily if you buy it some people.
- 31:04Speaker 4: So on.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Usually on projects, I'll sell my album before it comes
- 31:08Speaker 2: to streaming, and anyone who buys that project is up
- 31:12Speaker 2: for selection to receive a royalty. So I usually go
- 31:15Speaker 2: through the list of buyers and I'll pick like fifty
- 31:17Speaker 2: to one hundred people, sometimes one hundred and fifty if
- 31:20Speaker 2: I'm feeling good, sometimes two hundred, and I'll give them
- 31:22Speaker 2: a percentage of royalty in different songs from that album.
- 31:25Speaker 2: You can also buy royalties, like you could make an
- 31:28Speaker 2: offer to purchase a share.
- 31:29Speaker 3: So if you have a favorite.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Song you like I love this song, I know it's
- 31:32Speaker 2: gonna be big, or just I love this song, I
- 31:34Speaker 2: just want to have a stake in it, you can
- 31:36Speaker 2: make an offer to me and say I want five
- 31:38Speaker 2: percent of the revenue from this song.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I'm willing to.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Give you a thousand dollars five hundred dollars, and I'll
- 31:44Speaker 2: hit you and negotiate and say I'm willing to take
- 31:47Speaker 2: this or I'm not, and then I send you a
- 31:48Speaker 2: percentage to the distro you collect every month into perpetuity
- 31:52Speaker 2: for the rest of your life.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I've never heard of someone do that, bro, never
- 31:55Speaker 1: I've never heard a song.
- 31:56Speaker 3: I was like, did he do what I.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Think he did?
- 31:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:59Speaker 1: How do you? How do you? How did you come
- 32:02Speaker 1: up with that? Though?
- 32:03Speaker 2: Like how it was just a late night thought of
- 32:07Speaker 2: Like I've always been split in revenue with my team.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Everyone who helped, producers, engineers, they all get a percent.
- 32:13Speaker 2: So one day it was just like, we should give
- 32:16Speaker 2: the fans some They listened to this shit every day.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Imagine if your favorite jay Z song, imagine you listen
- 32:21Speaker 2: to it every day, but you don't want to percent it.
- 32:23Speaker 2: My fans, like bagas Claim blew up. Some of my
- 32:26Speaker 2: fans had equity in that song when it first dropped,
- 32:29Speaker 2: a year before it even took off.
- 32:31Speaker 3: So they for the rest.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Of their life, they're going to be getting money off
- 32:34Speaker 2: bagas Claim because they just made the right call.
- 32:36Speaker 3: They enjoyed this song so and then but.
- 32:41Speaker 1: They reached out to you, or how did you even
- 32:43Speaker 1: announce that?
- 32:44Speaker 2: I made this big announcement and Tieta on my team.
- 32:47Speaker 2: She created this form for people to go fill out
- 32:50Speaker 2: and you put all your information, you put your offer
- 32:52Speaker 2: amount how much you want. It comes to a database.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I look at all the offers. I'll email you and say,
- 32:57Speaker 2: I send your offer, I liked it, I accept you
- 33:00Speaker 2: email me.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I go through every offered.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Personal badass even through email, Like when we do bookings
- 33:06Speaker 2: and shit like, people are always surprised that they're talking
- 33:08Speaker 2: to me.
- 33:08Speaker 3: It's like, it's my business. Of course you're talking to me.
- 33:12Speaker 1: It makes sense, right. Most of my companies, for some
- 33:17Speaker 1: reason cannot get them past a certain threshold. I don't
- 33:20Speaker 1: know if it's like my whatever, but so most of
- 33:23Speaker 1: my companies are smaller. So I'll email, but I email
- 33:26Speaker 1: under an alias. It'll be like Samantha and it'll be
- 33:29Speaker 1: like Samantha.
- 33:30Speaker 3: John was so crazy.
- 33:31Speaker 2: When I used to send out emails to get booked,
- 33:33Speaker 2: to go to venues and try to book them. I
- 33:35Speaker 2: used to act like I was my own manager, and
- 33:38Speaker 2: then eventually it's like, bro, it's me, I am the Russell.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I'm going to the venue. This is what I want
- 33:43Speaker 2: to do right. And I've gotten so much more rapport
- 33:46Speaker 2: and response because it's like, of course people want to
- 33:49Speaker 2: talk to you, like I'm doing it right.
- 33:51Speaker 1: You didn't feel at some point it hinders, how much
- 33:59Speaker 1: more you can yet, because like I'll give it pretty
- 34:02Speaker 1: v uh. I emailed her and I'm like, okay, you know,
- 34:07Speaker 1: she responded and then like it was her, and then
- 34:10Speaker 1: she got on the phone with me. She like just
- 34:12Speaker 1: called me, and then I hear the Jamaican accent. I'm like,
- 34:15Speaker 1: wait a minute, I said, and we ended up vibing
- 34:18Speaker 1: on the phone like for forty five minutes. And but
- 34:21Speaker 1: it was it was the first time that I cold
- 34:23Speaker 1: called emailed somebody and not only did they respond in
- 34:27Speaker 1: record speed, but I mean, first of all, that girl
- 34:29Speaker 1: is as humble as a yet right, But that was
- 34:32Speaker 1: the first time that I've ever seen like someone on
- 34:34Speaker 1: that level just be like, what's.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Up, what's up?
- 34:37Speaker 1: Let's do it. She was like, what do you want
- 34:39Speaker 1: me to cook? I got beans and that I was like,
- 34:42Speaker 1: what are you doing? You're dope. I was just like
- 34:44Speaker 1: you know, you know, and it was past, no team,
- 34:47Speaker 1: no nothing, And you know, I didn't even know it
- 34:49Speaker 1: was her until she called me, and I was like, oh,
- 34:51Speaker 1: it's you. You know, that's like if jay Z calls
- 34:53Speaker 1: me after an email and be like.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Right, people usually get that same shock, but it just
- 34:57Speaker 2: builds a different relationship right big. You respect what someone
- 35:01Speaker 2: is building a lot more when you know they're working
- 35:04Speaker 2: it right. It's hard to fuck someone over when it's like,
- 35:06Speaker 2: oh it's you, Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yeah, they're right. There's a different rapport you have to.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Do.
- 35:12Speaker 1: You have an internal rule about letting new people into
- 35:17Speaker 1: your camp because it seems like you have a very
- 35:19Speaker 1: large camp.
- 35:20Speaker 2: It is kind kind of yeah, even my immediate group
- 35:24Speaker 2: is pretty large. There's not really a rule, just an energy, right,
- 35:29Speaker 2: if I know who I like and who I don't like,
- 35:32Speaker 2: and who fits and who doesn't. Sometimes we'll try people
- 35:34Speaker 2: out and it's like ah, that didn't really work, and
- 35:37Speaker 2: we kind of maneuver forward. But it's not really any rule,
- 35:40Speaker 2: just your energy, how you feel, how everyone feels about you,
- 35:44Speaker 2: how you feel about everyone, and we could usually get
- 35:47Speaker 2: a sense of that really fast. I also have like
- 35:50Speaker 2: I like to work with people who work hard, like
- 35:53Speaker 2: the best. You know, I don't want to It's like, bro,
- 35:56Speaker 2: I'm playing at a high level at all times. If
- 35:58Speaker 2: you can't keep up, you need to go on the
- 36:00Speaker 2: other court and play with the little kids for a
- 36:02Speaker 2: big to your game.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Get up.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Have you experienced failure or let me just rephrase that,
- 36:09Speaker 1: have you experienced perceived failure?
- 36:11Speaker 3: I hate the word, of course, yeah, of course me.
- 36:14Speaker 1: About like perceived failure and like what the experience was.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Man, I've had shows where there was five people in
- 36:21Speaker 2: the crowd and I had to pay for a venue.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I rented a sprinter van to get my team there.
- 36:25Speaker 2: We brought the equipment, We brought a ton of merch
- 36:28Speaker 2: that we didn't sell because there wasn't no one to
- 36:30Speaker 2: sell it to.
- 36:32Speaker 3: And that was a tough ride home. You know, I
- 36:34Speaker 3: was silent.
- 36:35Speaker 2: I'm usually the allowing and talking and talking, but I
- 36:37Speaker 2: was silent, right, And I've had several of those moments
- 36:41Speaker 2: of perceived failure even beyond that, just sometimes releasing merch
- 36:45Speaker 2: and putting all your money into it and it doesn't
- 36:47Speaker 2: go the people don't react. Early on, I had a
- 36:49Speaker 2: lot of albums. I dropped twenty two albums. I've had
- 36:53Speaker 2: a lot of albums early on where I was like,
- 36:54Speaker 2: this is gonna be Yeah, we've been, we've been, We
- 36:58Speaker 2: didn't blow nothing. Howels is a lot Yeah, way more coming.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Twenty two owls, not even twenty two singles.
- 37:05Speaker 3: No, And that's just my catalog.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I've written other EP single albums for a bunch of
- 37:10Speaker 2: other people. So, but just in my own album, it's
- 37:13Speaker 2: twenty two.
- 37:15Speaker 1: When you experience perceived failure, can you walk me through
- 37:20Speaker 1: your thoughts?
- 37:24Speaker 2: Usually is negative first, right, It's all like I look
- 37:27Speaker 2: for all the problems, what I didn't do, how I
- 37:31Speaker 2: didn't do it while I could have done it better.
- 37:33Speaker 2: And then eventually it just becomes like analytical solution based,
- 37:37Speaker 2: like I always want to I always want to prove
- 37:42Speaker 2: me wrong or anybody wrong. I'm like, well, I'm I'm
- 37:45Speaker 2: finna next time. I'm gonna do it triple besides, and
- 37:49Speaker 2: it's gonna be a success. But yeah, it's usually just
- 37:52Speaker 2: that emmer emotional turmoil that comes with it first, where
- 37:56Speaker 2: you know, you feel that dark cloud over you and
- 37:58Speaker 2: sometimes you got a crowd. You got to sit in
- 38:01Speaker 2: that and kind of be in that space until you
- 38:03Speaker 2: could work through it.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I'm surprised that you didn't just say, well, maybe this
- 38:09Speaker 1: is a question. But in that negative space, have you
- 38:13Speaker 1: questioned your worth? Like whether you know, like, oh, well
- 38:18Speaker 1: five people. I get the logistics because I as an entrepreneur,
- 38:21Speaker 1: I get like what did we do? What could we
- 38:23Speaker 1: have done differently? But in that negative space can you say,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and you are prolific for sure, But have you questioned
- 38:32Speaker 1: your own.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Not in music?
- 38:35Speaker 2: Like anytime I failed in music, it wasn't a question
- 38:38Speaker 2: of my own worth. It was just like they don't
- 38:40Speaker 2: see it, right, I knew, I knew I was it.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I'm just like they don't see it. I haven't done
- 38:46Speaker 2: enough work for them to see it. They don't see it.
- 38:49Speaker 2: So I've never questioned my worth in that aspect. If
- 38:51Speaker 2: I'm questioning my worth, it's usually through some life shit,
- 38:54Speaker 2: like me doing something against my own morals or against
- 38:59Speaker 2: my own code, or just I let somebody down that's
- 39:02Speaker 2: dear to me. Those are moments I question my worth
- 39:05Speaker 2: when I can't show up for my daughter in a
- 39:07Speaker 2: way that I felt like I should.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Things like that, but not music. And I put my.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Hours career wise.
- 39:14Speaker 2: No, yeah, no, not career wise at all. I know
- 39:19Speaker 2: what I'm worth in my career. I know what I deliver,
- 39:22Speaker 2: I know what I bring forth, and even even through life,
- 39:25Speaker 2: like I'm getting to a point where I know my
- 39:28Speaker 2: impact and how significant I am to you know, the
- 39:31Speaker 2: life around me and the world.
- 39:33Speaker 3: I'm feeding a community community.
- 39:36Speaker 1: So there's a book I just recently checked out. I
- 39:38Speaker 1: don't know if you ever heard of it. It's I'm
- 39:40Speaker 1: called male versus Man, dere Whitfield shout outs to him.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I picked up the book. I thought it was for men,
- 39:48Speaker 1: but so I got it for my my friend, and
- 39:53Speaker 1: but I ended up reading it because I like to read.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I got to get to a book.
- 39:58Speaker 1: I'm literally in a book head. I am obsessed with books.
- 40:02Speaker 1: But I read the book and one of the things
- 40:06Speaker 1: he pointed out in the book, which I will gift
- 40:08Speaker 1: you the book now that I have, I think I
- 40:10Speaker 1: have your address on it.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I'll get to information.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yes, But anyways, one of the things he talked about
- 40:16Speaker 1: was like the male versus man. You know, the male
- 40:20Speaker 1: is self seeking and the man is of service, which
- 40:23Speaker 1: is different problem. I never thought of that, Like, so
- 40:25Speaker 1: when a guy takes me on a date, I'm like,
- 40:28Speaker 1: are you trying to give me? Are you trying to
- 40:30Speaker 1: serve me? Now, at first I was like, oh, that's
- 40:33Speaker 1: messed up to like seek service, But as a female,
- 40:36Speaker 1: it's actually not, because you know, we seek protection and
- 40:39Speaker 1: we seek Some of us do need help providing, and
- 40:43Speaker 1: some of us need of course, everyone wants to be professed.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Marry me. The announce the world. I'm the one. I
- 40:51Speaker 1: also am a hip hop head. And after reading that
- 40:54Speaker 1: book lately, it's like every song on the radio is
- 40:57Speaker 1: like shout out to my sneaky link or or yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 1: I'm having sex with my side chick raw. But I'm
- 41:04Speaker 1: never gonna leave you. I'm never gonna leave my family
- 41:08Speaker 1: for you. And and I'm like, yo, did he really
- 41:11Speaker 1: just say he's having sex with his side chick raw
- 41:14Speaker 1: and that's why she's attached? And some of these lyrics
- 41:16Speaker 1: are so terrible to women. I'm like, at what point?
- 41:20Speaker 1: And who is responsible? And this is just an honest
- 41:23Speaker 1: like friend or you know you you you have responsibilities
- 41:27Speaker 1: as a philosopher and entrepreneur and a leader and being
- 41:32Speaker 1: a vulnerable man yourself. Like who do you think is responsible?
- 41:37Speaker 1: Is it the art form? Is it the male energy
- 41:40Speaker 1: or is it us women? Uh?
- 41:45Speaker 2: I don't think anyone's responsible, but I think everyone is accountable.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I hear the same music coming from females as well.
- 41:52Speaker 3: I agree.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I went into an ail salon I saw nothing but
- 41:54Speaker 1: strippers right all the.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I don't think there's a responsibility, but there's an accountability.
- 42:00Speaker 2: And I think that's one of those things that it's
- 42:03Speaker 2: hard to ever be what you never see, right. A
- 42:06Speaker 2: lot of these men that make it in hip hop
- 42:08Speaker 2: and music, they haven't had great examples of leadership or
- 42:13Speaker 2: of men that have that in them to not fall
- 42:17Speaker 2: to desire, or that are disciplined or impeccable in their
- 42:22Speaker 2: soul or fulfilled to where they don't need to seek
- 42:25Speaker 2: or go get extra and the same with women. So
- 42:27Speaker 2: I think that's just we often act these artists to
- 42:32Speaker 2: build things that they don't have the tools to build, right. Yeah,
- 42:36Speaker 2: Like if you go look in their toolbox, it's it's
- 42:41Speaker 2: like you want to.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Build a house with us.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I feel like jay Z kind of touched on that
- 42:45Speaker 1: in I want to say four for four or one
- 42:47Speaker 1: of the altists like where he was the first one
- 42:49Speaker 1: to be.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Where we've seen that, Oh wow, you've upgraded your toolbox, right,
- 42:55Speaker 2: But a lot of artists don't have that. We're coming
- 42:57Speaker 2: out of environments that don't nurture that type of behavior
- 43:01Speaker 2: or system. Like when I was coming up, the older
- 43:04Speaker 2: men around me was like players too, Like, bro, what
- 43:07Speaker 2: you feel me? So you grow up embracing that and
- 43:09Speaker 2: wanting to.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Be like that. That's what you replicate.
- 43:12Speaker 2: That's what you know, you don't see anyone I've I
- 43:17Speaker 2: don't think I've ever seen a man that was just
- 43:19Speaker 2: so in love and revered their family so much and
- 43:22Speaker 2: treated they women so well, like they meant the world
- 43:26Speaker 2: to me. For me to be like man, that's what
- 43:28Speaker 2: I want, right, Very seldom do you witness that and
- 43:31Speaker 2: experience that. But yet you expect someone to conduct themselves
- 43:36Speaker 2: in that manner. That's what's not gonna happen.
- 43:39Speaker 1: That's interesting. So when it comes to accountability in your
- 43:43Speaker 1: personal life, who holds you accountable? Is it? I don't
- 43:47Speaker 1: want to answer the question.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Everyone around me in a sense holds me accountable in
- 43:54Speaker 2: some way, but ultimately me like I have to be.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I have to be the one that wants to get
- 44:00Speaker 2: up every day and put in work and be better
- 44:02Speaker 2: and want to drop my daughter off and pick her
- 44:04Speaker 2: up and do work and things like that. But everyone
- 44:07Speaker 2: around me, from myself, my mom, my dad, my daughter,
- 44:10Speaker 2: her mother, tiera Millie testing everyone are Fannie. Just all
- 44:15Speaker 2: of my friends hold me accountable in some aspect. They're
- 44:18Speaker 2: always in my You know, I can only stoop so
- 44:21Speaker 2: low sometimes before someone's like, hey, bro, what we doing?
- 44:25Speaker 1: Oh? I like that? I like that, Okay, is there
- 44:28Speaker 1: anything that your fans are me don't know about you?
- 44:37Speaker 3: I mean everything. I mean I guess you only know
- 44:42Speaker 3: the music.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Well because you kind of signed a camera on your entrepreneurship.
- 44:47Speaker 1: You also do all these little I don't want to
- 44:50Speaker 1: say little, but these gems on social media. So when
- 44:53Speaker 1: I say is there anything we don't know about you?
- 44:56Speaker 1: I feel like you're it's like you learn a lesson.
- 44:59Speaker 1: You're like, let's put it out there, learn that put
- 45:17Speaker 1: social battle that I be, like, I don't know if
- 45:20Speaker 1: I want to get personal, man, real.
- 45:24Speaker 2: No such thing. I've had the really reals and I
- 45:27Speaker 2: shared there's no such thing. Because there's a billion people
- 45:30Speaker 2: in the world and someone's been through exactly what you've
- 45:32Speaker 2: been through, and they may need your help, right, but
- 45:34Speaker 2: you're refusing to hell, you have all the tools and
- 45:37Speaker 2: all the means to help them, but you're refusing to
- 45:39Speaker 2: do it because of your own fear, right, And like,
- 45:42Speaker 2: I don't want to deny nobody of that tool.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Like I want people to be able to grow.
- 45:46Speaker 2: If that's going to be through me just sharing what
- 45:49Speaker 2: I felt or experienced, that's an easy call, right.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Do you do? And the the world is always a
- 45:58Speaker 1: sensitive around this top, but I'm gonna go ahead and
- 46:01Speaker 1: throw it out there. But like, do you believe in therapy?
- 46:04Speaker 1: Do you do therapy?
- 46:05Speaker 2: So I recently started therapy, probably a few months back,
- 46:09Speaker 2: and I had a few sessions and it's cool. I'm
- 46:13Speaker 2: not consistent with it because I don't feel like I'm
- 46:17Speaker 2: gaining much from it. But I also had like an
- 46:20Speaker 2: expectation of what I was supposed to get from it,
- 46:23Speaker 2: like I'm supposed to be here, like I have a
- 46:25Speaker 2: new sessions. It's like, man, I'm an old new man, right,
- 46:27Speaker 2: And that's not how it happens. And for me, I
- 46:30Speaker 2: just realized that it was worth that I need to
- 46:33Speaker 2: do right. I don't need anyone's help to be a
- 46:35Speaker 2: better human. I just need to choose to be a
- 46:37Speaker 2: better human and commit to that. That's not something I
- 46:39Speaker 2: need to talk to someone about. If you want to, yes,
- 46:43Speaker 2: But for me personally, it's like I built an entire empire.
- 46:47Speaker 2: I could definitely build myself.
- 46:49Speaker 3: As a man, right. I don't need anyone's assistant to
- 46:51Speaker 3: do that. But I chose.
- 46:52Speaker 2: I've chosen not to, right, I've chosen not to allocate
- 46:56Speaker 2: my energy towards that which is the only reason I
- 46:59Speaker 2: haven't grown in any way that I wish to.
- 47:02Speaker 1: It's funny you say that because I recently full vulnerability here.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I recently did try therapy and I kind of felt like,
- 47:12Speaker 1: oh man, this is gonna sound really shitty for all
- 47:14Speaker 1: those people that give it to them. But I felt like, yeah,
- 47:16Speaker 1: I wasn't getting the response in that I needed, in
- 47:19Speaker 1: the record speed that I needed, And it was like
- 47:22Speaker 1: I knew the answers, but I just wasn't choosing to
- 47:26Speaker 1: make the choice that I needed to make. And in therapy,
- 47:29Speaker 1: it takes so much uprooting of your childhood to get
- 47:33Speaker 1: to the route that I was, like, yo, I'm not
- 47:35Speaker 1: trying to relive the thing that I ran from, like
- 47:38Speaker 1: trying to give me PTSD. Like no, I'm good, But
- 47:41Speaker 1: I do agree with you, and I'm glad you were
- 47:43Speaker 1: honest about that because people say therapy therapy, therapy, and
- 47:46Speaker 1: I actually thought you weren't gonna say that you do
- 47:49Speaker 1: therapy because I low key feel like your vulnerability and
- 47:54Speaker 1: your lyrics is a form of therapy.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Definitely, Definitely, that's where I get to get all of
- 48:00Speaker 2: that from.
- 48:01Speaker 1: And someone gets you, man, and like, because I feel
- 48:03Speaker 1: like Drake, every time.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Writing and talking really helps.
- 48:08Speaker 2: And that's the thing about the past, like you're saying,
- 48:11Speaker 2: and that shows you how much you're how deep your
- 48:14Speaker 2: trauma is because you think like speaking about it is
- 48:17Speaker 2: reliving it. You can't relive the past, right, It's already
- 48:20Speaker 2: been lived, it's gone. It only exists in your memory.
- 48:23Speaker 2: You can't relive it. But we when trauma hits in
- 48:26Speaker 2: a certain way, it makes you feel like you're going
- 48:28Speaker 2: through that experience again, but it's not. And you really
- 48:31Speaker 2: have to work through that to get You got to
- 48:33Speaker 2: go through it to get through it, right.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Yeah, or you can try. I don't. I tried my
- 48:43Speaker 1: hardest to I believe. I tell myself this. Every storm.
- 48:47Speaker 1: At the end of every storm is a rainbow. So
- 48:50Speaker 1: the faster I don't cope through it, or the more
- 48:54Speaker 1: I do not cope and numb, the faster I get
- 48:56Speaker 1: through the storm. So like if I were to numb
- 48:59Speaker 1: some and drink, get high, have sex, or do whatever
- 49:02Speaker 1: it is, go go to the mall, look pretty, whatever
- 49:05Speaker 1: I gotta do, go to the clubs. If I cope
- 49:08Speaker 1: through it, then it's gonna take me longer to heal.
- 49:12Speaker 1: So if I go through it and like blow up
- 49:14Speaker 1: my girlfriends then to strangers and seven elevens. You know whatever,
- 49:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna get through it faster even though it's gonna hurt,
- 49:21Speaker 1: like you know what I'm saying, right.
- 49:23Speaker 2: So definitely, you definitely prolong the healing process as you
- 49:28Speaker 2: as you act right. Every every twinkie you eat just
- 49:32Speaker 2: makes you closer to the opposite end of where you
- 49:34Speaker 2: want to be, right, like exactly, And that's how it
- 49:37Speaker 2: is with everything. Every time you do another act that
- 49:39Speaker 2: goes against what you want to be, you're just adding it.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Because the thing with with how the human system work
- 49:46Speaker 2: is the more you do something, the better you get
- 49:48Speaker 2: at it. Right, So the more you live fout, the
- 49:51Speaker 2: better you get at it. Some people are phenomenal cheaters,
- 49:54Speaker 2: and it's because they do it a whole lot. Yeah, right,
- 49:57Speaker 2: So every time you do it, you're getting better at it,
- 50:00Speaker 2: which needs it's going to take a lot longer to
- 50:02Speaker 2: get better in the other direction because you're so exceptional
- 50:06Speaker 2: at what you do. If you lie a lot, you're exceptional,
- 50:08Speaker 2: it's going to take you a lot to become someone
- 50:11Speaker 2: who tells the truth exceptionally.
- 50:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's deep. That's deep, but I think at
- 50:17Speaker 1: the end of the day, I mean, I personally give
- 50:20Speaker 1: people a lot of grace. I'm one of those people
- 50:22Speaker 1: that you could literally push me off my seat and
- 50:23Speaker 1: be like I was just angry. My bag clams, so
- 50:26Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh no, it's okay. But now I'm
- 50:30Speaker 1: at the place where it's like, I get it, you're angry.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I just don't want to sit next to you anymore.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Like take your anger out on the flowers over there,
- 50:37Speaker 1: you know, But it's a pleasure to have you. I know,
- 50:40Speaker 1: we kind of we're all over this space. I really
- 50:43Speaker 1: would like to go to your show tonight. I know, yes,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I do have some plans, but I'm a pivot and
- 50:48Speaker 1: I'm a mother now, so trust me, everything is like
- 50:51Speaker 1: a babysitter, babysitter, nanny, babysitter is like any amount of
- 50:54Speaker 1: freedom cost you have to come.
- 50:55Speaker 3: This is going to be special.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I'm definitely gonna come. I am a true fan. I
- 51:01Speaker 1: have so much admiration for the way you run your businesses,
- 51:04Speaker 1: how everyone gets a buy and how everyone gets an
- 51:06Speaker 1: option to invest in, how you partner and do this
- 51:10Speaker 1: restaurant where it's like pay what you what you want
- 51:14Speaker 1: which is brilliant and it's just something that a lot
- 51:18Speaker 1: of artists aren't doing right, you know. And I love
- 51:21Speaker 1: the vulnerability and your lyrics. So I'm truly thankful that
- 51:25Speaker 1: we finally got you on the show. Thank you all
- 51:29Speaker 1: listeners for checking out another episode of Eating While Broke.

- 52:04Speaker 2: I'm at home.
- 52:05Speaker 1: They when they told me that I got you, it
- 52:08Speaker 1: was like I had like two days notice, like you
- 52:10Speaker 1: know or whatever. And I was like negotiating with the
- 52:13Speaker 1: team everyone's schedule. There's like four people that have to
- 52:15Speaker 1: all Onligne schedules, and uh, there was a hiccup and
- 52:20Speaker 1: I'm like going back and forth, like, yo, do you
- 52:22Speaker 1: think we can push back and we're all like, no,
- 52:27Speaker 1: it's not worth it, and we got an hour, let's
- 52:30Speaker 1: take it. But thank you and thanks for feeding me.
- 52:33Speaker 1: You and I both agree, you know, moving forward, we
- 52:36Speaker 1: could do eggs, but maybe on a dinner garlic bread.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Dinner garlic bread, then all right pie y'all.
- 52:41Speaker 3: Yeah, beautiful
