Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This Saturday. Of course, Warritar Football Club, the women's sides,
- 0:03Speaker 1: organized an event. This event is something that we are
- 0:07Speaker 1: told that Heather Anderson, you know, she'd undertake many times
- 0:12Speaker 1: while she was residing in the Northern Territory. So in
- 0:15Speaker 1: just a moment we're going to be finding out a
- 0:17Speaker 1: bit more about it when we catch up with Lauren
- 0:19Speaker 1: O'Shea and she was listed for the Crows together with
- 0:22Speaker 1: Heather and played with her for the war Retars where
- 0:25Speaker 1: she still plays right now. So we're going to get
- 0:28Speaker 1: her on the line and find out a bit more
- 0:30Speaker 1: about this game. And as I did mention earlier on
- 0:33Speaker 1: the show, we know that Heather Anderson was an Australian
- 0:36Speaker 1: Army medic who did indeed serve in the top end
- 0:40Speaker 1: for three years. She was also an AFLNT player who
- 0:44Speaker 1: played for war Retar Football Club and was then drafted
- 0:47Speaker 1: to the AFL w Adelaide Crow's side in twenty seventeen,
- 0:51Speaker 1: where she played eight games and was a premiership winner.
- 0:55Speaker 1: She was the first to be drafted from the territory. Now,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Heather was a well known, respected and loved person in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the football community and as I'm sure that you have
- 1:04Speaker 1: heard in the news throughout this week. She passed earlier
- 1:08Speaker 1: this week. Now joining me on the line is Lauren Oshay.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Lauren.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Hi Katie, how are you?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, really good? Thank you so much for your time
- 1:18Speaker 1: this morning. Now, Lauren, you guys were listed to play together,
- 1:22Speaker 1: as I understand it, for the Crows and you also
- 1:24Speaker 1: played for the Tars together. What was Heather like as
- 1:28Speaker 1: a teammate?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely so yeah. When she was obviously posted today world,
- 1:34Speaker 2: she come along and joined the Warritar Football Club as
- 1:37Speaker 2: soon as you as soon as she popped down to training,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you could just see her eliteness. I guess she was
- 1:44Speaker 2: just a step above everyone probably and still hand on
- 1:49Speaker 2: heart to this day, would say she's the fittest person
- 1:52Speaker 2: I've ever seen. And in that AFLW culture as well,
- 1:56Speaker 2: she was just yeah, absolutely phenomenal, but such a although
- 2:01Speaker 2: she'd break record, she'd be lapping people, she'd be miles ahead.
- 2:04Speaker 2: She was probably one of the most humble and caring
- 2:07Speaker 2: people that I've come across as well.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So an incredible teammate and an incredible friend by the
- 2:13Speaker 1: sounds of it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely she was. She would yeah, beat the pants
- 2:19Speaker 2: off everyone, but yet get to the end and get
- 2:21Speaker 2: around every one, and so I think you did really
- 2:23Speaker 2: well and YadA YadA. But I'm like, and you just
- 2:26Speaker 2: want this all mate.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Well, tell me about how fit she was, because I've
- 2:30Speaker 1: seen you guys at training and you're all pretty bloody feet. Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Well, I guess if you look at the base level
- 2:36Speaker 2: of fitness it is, it's pretty good. But she was
- 2:39Speaker 2: just a step above. I think she was so regimented
- 2:42Speaker 2: in her fitness and exercise and nutrition that she really
- 2:46Speaker 2: just kind of put everyone the shame. To be honest,
- 2:49Speaker 2: she would, yeah, she would. She would probably hire the
- 2:52Speaker 2: exercise session she did, to be honest, so people didn't know.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But she Yeah, the amount of gym and strength where
- 2:59Speaker 2: she would have done and excelled in the strength and
- 3:01Speaker 2: conditioning as well. She was phenomenal. And she do like
- 3:06Speaker 2: just random things. Wake up one morning and go, oh,
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm going to run run to this place or do this,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and it's yeah, kilometers and kilometers on end. We compete
- 3:16Speaker 2: and you're a run a cadie, you know, the city
- 3:18Speaker 2: of Surfing events like that. She'd enter in and we'd
- 3:20Speaker 2: all start together there in our task singlets and she'd
- 3:23Speaker 2: finish kilometers ahead of us and then turn round, job
- 3:27Speaker 2: back and took out the rest of us and runs
- 3:29Speaker 2: through to the finish line.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Oh, she sounds like she was awesome.
- 3:34Speaker 2: She she truly was, And yeah, just I think her
- 3:37Speaker 2: humbleness is what made her such a great person as well,
- 3:41Speaker 2: that you would never hear a brag or promote herself
- 3:44Speaker 2: in any way, shape or form, but so caring of others,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and yeah, she was. She was not a huge social person.
- 3:53Speaker 2: She just got on with her job and did her thing.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But yeah, such a such a great teammates, a great teammate,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and such a great person to have around.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And I understand as well that she was recognized for
- 4:06Speaker 1: wearing that pink head gear, and it was for a
- 4:09Speaker 1: very kind reason. Wasn't ash it sure was, it sure was.
- 4:13Speaker 2: It wasn't actually for head protection, but her so growing up,
- 4:18Speaker 2: And yeah, was interested in football and played as a kid,
- 4:22Speaker 2: which not a whole lot. It's happening more and more
- 4:24Speaker 2: now is fantastic, but at her age it wasn't a
- 4:27Speaker 2: common thing for girls to be playing football. I don't
- 4:30Speaker 2: think her mum was a big fan of her playing football,
- 4:32Speaker 2: but let it happen, And I don't think he mum
- 4:35Speaker 2: would attend many games or watch, but her mom does
- 4:38Speaker 2: have a vision impairmitent. It sort of started as a
- 4:40Speaker 2: bit of a joke and I saw this bright pink
- 4:43Speaker 2: helmet and sad, I'll buy that and whack it on.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And she's not a pink not really her color, but yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 2: bright pink helmet on the ground. That meant her mum
- 4:52Speaker 2: could could pick her out on the ground and see her.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And it was kind of a bit of a deal.
- 4:56Speaker 2: If I wear this, then you'll be able to see me?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Can you come and watch a few more games? So yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 2: very very special story with that helmet.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it does sound that way now. I mean this
- 5:06Speaker 1: week must be a really difficult week for you guys.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But what I love is that the clubs, you know
- 5:10Speaker 1: I come together and you've organized something really special for
- 5:13Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah we have. So. Yeah, it has been a tough
- 5:18Speaker 2: week with yeh her death on Sunday and then hearing
- 5:20Speaker 2: the news Monday. But just yeah, they're reaching out of
- 5:25Speaker 2: local individuals and football clubs has been magnificent, but also
- 5:28Speaker 2: on a national level as well, AFLW clubs reaching out
- 5:33Speaker 2: to Crow's and pass players. I'm just to check in
- 5:36Speaker 2: and say that they're thinking of it, So that's magnificent.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Our current captain at the Warrital Football Club for our
- 5:42Speaker 2: Premier League team, Lisa Roberts. I guess you'd started with
- 5:45Speaker 2: a sort of well, in Honorvando, this a run would
- 5:50Speaker 2: be something suitable. So she's put together this run with
- 5:53Speaker 2: some assistance from a few people. So we're going to
- 5:57Speaker 2: run from Robinson Barrats which is where lived when she
- 6:00Speaker 2: was in Darlan, to Gardens Oval, which was the Warritur
- 6:04Speaker 2: home ground, So that will be that run will take
- 6:07Speaker 2: place tomorrow morning. But at the Oval at Gardens there's
- 6:10Speaker 2: some options there as well, so there'll be people running
- 6:14Speaker 2: twenty eight laps of the football Oval in honor of Ando.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And there's been a cross TA session designed around Ando
- 6:21Speaker 2: as well that involves her the date of her passing
- 6:25Speaker 2: the month so thirteen eleven, her age twenty twenty two.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So there's lots lots of options for people to get
- 6:32Speaker 2: involved and it's definitely something that Ando, being the fitness
- 6:37Speaker 2: freak that she was, we thought we're a great way
- 6:40Speaker 2: to honor her.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It sounds like an incredible way to honor her, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: for you guys, and I understand that the runner is
- 6:47Speaker 1: going to be wearing pink. Do you reckon she'd be
- 6:49Speaker 1: happy about that? Or do you reckon you think it's funny.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Well, we've said a touch of pink, so she probably
- 6:57Speaker 2: would turn her nose up at that to be honest
- 6:59Speaker 2: and have a bit of a giagle. But some of
- 7:01Speaker 2: us will be donning her number two guernsey from Warritas.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But yeah, there'll be bits and pieces of pink getting
- 7:07Speaker 2: around to What.
- 7:08Speaker 1: A beautiful way to honor your friend. I think it's
- 7:11Speaker 1: a really incredible thing to do such, you know, is
- 7:14Speaker 1: such a wonderful thing to do. So is anybody able
- 7:17Speaker 1: to get involved or is it mostly just the footing community?
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, it's it's absolutely open to everyone and Ando being
- 7:25Speaker 2: such a big part of the football community here but
- 7:27Speaker 2: also the defense course as well, so it is open
- 7:30Speaker 2: to anyone. There's details on Facebook and we've had a
- 7:34Speaker 2: lot of people jump on board to help us in
- 7:36Speaker 2: this short week to get it together as well. So
- 7:38Speaker 2: Leah f and Ochiario member first still it has contributed.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Mark Turner member for Blaine has also donated mates for Mates.
- 7:47Speaker 2: We want to shout out to them for their support
- 7:49Speaker 2: as well. And yes, soldiers around the country tomorrow will
- 7:53Speaker 2: be doing activities in remembrance to Vano. So there's lots
- 7:56Speaker 2: happening and we've even had girls doing the Andos session
- 8:00Speaker 2: is what we're calling it, the workout in other places
- 8:03Speaker 2: across Australia and they've sent us pictures and things like
- 8:06Speaker 2: that as well. So another Imra and North has done
- 8:10Speaker 2: a lot. Who was a close friend of Ando's. You've
- 8:13Speaker 2: been the army together with her. He's put a lot
- 8:15Speaker 2: of time and efforty in behind the scenes as well,
- 8:17Speaker 2: and obviously Lisa Robertson getting this together through the support
- 8:20Speaker 2: of our Warrantur football class. So I guess we want
- 8:24Speaker 2: to get out, yeah, do this in honor of Vando.
- 8:26Speaker 2: But there's the message that goes along with it as
- 8:29Speaker 2: well as is to always seek help and don't be
- 8:32Speaker 2: afraid to ask when you need help. We know the
- 8:35Speaker 2: mental health organizations out there, they're all there for assistance.
- 8:40Speaker 2: We can we know where to find them, we can
- 8:42Speaker 2: see them. But we've also got to know if we
- 8:44Speaker 2: are in that dark place that we need to reach
- 8:46Speaker 2: out because people, friends and family and these organizations can
- 8:49Speaker 2: help us get out of.
- 8:50Speaker 1: That that's so such an important message, Lauren. Before I
- 8:55Speaker 1: let you go, can you please tell me what these
- 8:57Speaker 1: ANDO workout includes.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I sure can just give me two seconds.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Is it sounds like it's tough if she was, if
- 9:05Speaker 1: she was a fitness break it would be tough.
- 9:09Speaker 2: It is, it is so hers, it is so passing
- 9:14Speaker 2: away on the thirteenth of the eleventh, twenty twenty two,
- 9:17Speaker 2: at the age of twenty eight, and she wore the
- 9:19Speaker 2: number two guernsey. So it's thirteen push.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Up, eleven butterfly sit up a too, twenty twenty two
- 9:28Speaker 3: meter run, so just over two point two k's and
- 9:30Speaker 3: twenty eight lunders and it's two times through.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So all those special numbers for Ando. We've had some
- 9:37Speaker 2: red faces in the photos that have come back, so
- 9:40Speaker 2: I'll dare do it for the quickest time you can.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Oh good on you guys. Like I said before, I
- 9:45Speaker 1: think that this is such an incredible way to really
- 9:48Speaker 1: to honor your friend that you've lost, such a wonderful
- 9:51Speaker 1: thing to do. And I really appreciate you coming on
- 9:54Speaker 1: this morning and speaking more to us about and oh
- 9:58Speaker 1: and and you know, telling us about what an incredible
- 10:01Speaker 1: person she was. I really appreciate your time, no worries.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Thank you Katie, and appreciate you and getting that word
- 10:08Speaker 2: out there with all of the yeah, the message is
- 10:10Speaker 2: behind this.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Laura and Osha, thank you and no doubt we'll talk
- 10:14Speaker 1: to you again very soon. All the best with everything
- 10:17Speaker 1: that's happening tomorrow.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Thanks Katie, Thank you,
