- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 1st.
- 0:12Today is International Music Day, a global celebration that
- 0:16unites people through the universal language of music.
- 0:20This meaningful observance was established on October 1st, 1975
- 0:24by the International Music Council, an organization founded
- 0:28by UNESCO. The day was created as the
- 0:30initiative of Lord Yeudi Menuhin, a legendary violinist
- 0:36and conductor who envisioned a day that would celebrate music's
- 0:39power to bring people together across all boundaries.
- 0:43International Music Day seeks to promote music as an art form for
- 0:47all societies and to encourage intercultural exchange and
- 0:50understanding with musical traditions.
- 0:54From classical orchestras in Vienna to traditional drumming
- 0:57circles in Africa, from street performers in Tokyo to folk
- 1:01musics in the Andes, October 1st celebrates the vast spectrum of
- 1:05human creativity expressed through sound and rhythm.
- 1:10What makes this day special is it's recognition that music
- 1:13isn't just entertainment, it's a fundamental part of what makes
- 1:17us human. It's how we express joy and
- 1:20sorrow, how we mark important moments, how we connect with
- 1:24each other when words aren't enough.
- 1:28Today's quote comes from philosopher Frederick Nietzsche,
- 1:32who said without music, life would be a mistake.
- 1:40Nietzsche's powerful statement captures exactly why
- 1:43International Music Day matters. He's not saying life without
- 1:47music would be less pleasant or less entertaining.
- 1:50He's saying it would be fundamentally wrong, a mistake,
- 1:55incomplete in some essential way.
- 1:59Think about what music does that nothing else can.
- 2:02It moves us physically and emotionally in ways that bypass
- 2:05our rational mind. A song can instantly transport
- 2:09you back to a specific moment in your life with more vividness
- 2:13than any photograph can. Melody can express feelings so
- 2:18complex that we don't even have words for them.
- 2:22A rhythm we can synchronize the heartbeats of everyone in a
- 2:25room, literally reading unity from diversity.
- 2:30Music is woven into every human culture that has ever existed.
- 2:35We sing to our babies. We dance at our weddings.
- 2:39We March to drums in times of war and peace.
- 2:43No society has ever been discovered that didn't have
- 2:46music. It's as fundamental to human
- 2:49experience as language itself, maybe even more so, since music
- 2:54creates language and human evolution.
- 2:57Lord Yehudi Manouin understood this when he created
- 3:01International Music Day. He wanted to remind us that in a
- 3:05world often divided by language, politics and borders, music
- 3:11remains our common ground, our shared inheritance as human
- 3:16beings. So today, think about
- 3:19Nietzsche's assertion that life without music would be a
- 3:22mistake. When was the last time you
- 3:25really listened to music not as background noise, but as as an
- 3:30active present experience? Today, take a few minutes to
- 3:34truly engage with music. Put on a song that moves you and
- 3:38give it your full attention. Better yet, make some music
- 3:42yourself. Sing in the shower drum on your
- 3:45desk. I'm a melody that's stuck in
- 3:47your head. If you're feeling adventurous,
- 3:51explore music from a culture different from your own.
- 3:55International Music Day reminds us that music isn't a luxury or
- 3:58a distraction. It's essential for nourishment
- 4:02of the human spirit. Don't let life be a mistake by
- 4:06forgetting to feed that part of yourself.
- 4:09That's going to do it. For today, I'm Anna McGivern,
- 4:12signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:17Same part time, same pod station with another daily quote.
