- 1:07Speaker 2: it's the place to go for game day. The Eagles
- 1:10Speaker 2: take on the Bears Monday night. We'll be there on
- 1:13Speaker 2: Monday night. We're breaking down some of the things that
- 1:15Speaker 2: will be a big factor in that game. Jeff Mosher
- 1:18Speaker 2: from the Inside the Birds podcast is here, phillyvoice.com. And
- 1:23Speaker 2: let's take a look at some of the news and
- 1:24Speaker 2: notes around the Eagles as they kind of get ready
- 1:27Speaker 2: for a Monday night game, an extra day here in motion.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Of course, the big news this week, Zach Ertz. We
- 1:32Speaker 2: talked Monday. Goddard had got hurt. You guys on Inside
- 1:36Speaker 2: the Birds have been talking about Ertz. A lot of
- 1:38Speaker 2: people have hinted at Ertz. He is here, and today
- 1:41Speaker 2: Sean Mannion kind of hinted at whether he'll be ready
- 1:44Speaker 2: for the game or not. Do you anticipate, Jeff, that
- 1:47Speaker 2: Ertz is right out there on Monday night ready to
- 1:50Speaker 2: play and a part of this offense?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Well, they certainly made sure that they got him signed
- 1:56Speaker 1: pretty quickly after the Goddard injury. But we have to
- 1:59Speaker 1: face the reality of the situation with Hertz. He is
- 2:03Speaker 1: 35 years old. He is coming off his second reconstructive
- 2:06Speaker 1: knee surgery. He was not with a team in OTAs
- 2:09Speaker 1: and in training camp. And so you're talking about taking
- 2:13Speaker 1: that guy who may have Thursday, Friday, Saturday, like three
- 2:18Speaker 1: to four practices. And then throwing him out there in
- 2:21Speaker 1: a Monday night game against the Bears, you are asking
- 2:23Speaker 1: for trouble if you try to squeeze too much juice
- 2:28Speaker 1: from that. I mean, he's such a veteran that maybe
- 2:31Speaker 1: he can go out there and give you a couple
- 2:33Speaker 1: of snaps in certain personnel packages. But the game plan
- 2:38Speaker 1: cannot be Zach Ertz is our savior or our replacement
- 2:42Speaker 1: for Dallas Goddard. They don't have one right now. They're
- 2:45Speaker 1: going to have to figure out a way to basically
- 2:48Speaker 1: continue to play a lot of 11 personnel, three wide receivers,
- 2:52Speaker 1: one tight end, with Johnny Munt being that one tight end,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and he is not a threat in the pass game.
- 2:56Speaker 2: No, he's not, and I don't know that right now.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You've got Stowers hurt, you've got Calcaterra hurt. You don't
- 3:03Speaker 2: really have a guy, so the tight end might kind
- 3:05Speaker 2: of be, for at least a week, not be a
- 3:08Speaker 2: big factor here in the pass game, but we'll see
- 3:11Speaker 2: what kind of role Ertz has right off the bat.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Still a guy, though, I mean, if we're looking at
- 3:16Speaker 2: him as a player, still a guy who can catch passes,
- 3:20Speaker 2: get himself open, could find himself to be kind of
- 3:23Speaker 2: that security blanket type of guy that can find spots
- 3:27Speaker 2: over the middle. It would be interesting to see if
- 3:29Speaker 2: he's the kind of guy that Hurts finds a lot
- 3:31Speaker 2: of trust in.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Oh, well, he should.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And the irony, well, I don't know if it's irony, but,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I mean, they needed, and they were talking to Zach
- 3:38Speaker 1: Hurts before the Goddard injury. They needed a player like
- 3:42Speaker 1: Hurts before... Goddard was hurt. Like we've been talking since
- 3:46Speaker 1: August about their depth issues at tight end, which were
- 3:49Speaker 1: only exacerbated when both Calcaterra and Eli Stowers started the
- 3:54Speaker 1: year on IR. This could have been a nice moment
- 3:57Speaker 1: for the kid Stowers. If he was, you know, a
- 3:59Speaker 1: couple of weeks in of practicing more and not being ready,
- 4:02Speaker 1: maybe he would have made some progress, but you just
- 4:06Speaker 1: don't have that. I mean, they have needed tight end
- 4:08Speaker 1: depth in the worst way. So I think Zachary's will
- 4:12Speaker 1: be a nice long haul for, But for the short term,
- 4:16Speaker 1: both in being a replacement as a pass catcher for Goddard,
- 4:20Speaker 1: it's not going to be Monday night. And honestly, it
- 4:23Speaker 1: doesn't really cure them of their biggest issue, which is
- 4:25Speaker 1: really getting the first down offense and running game going.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Because Zach's not going to come in there, even if
- 4:30Speaker 1: he does play a few snaps, and start blocking edge
- 4:32Speaker 1: defenders down the field.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Not a blocker.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, not a blocker.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Uh, so, uh, you know, Mannion did, he didn't say
- 4:39Speaker 2: that he's going to play in the game, but, uh,
- 4:41Speaker 2: you know, obviously, uh, we would imagine that, uh, or
- 4:44Speaker 2: they're going to try to get him up to speed
- 4:45Speaker 2: as fast as possible. Maybe have a little package of
- 4:47Speaker 2: stuff in here because not one of these situations where
- 4:49Speaker 2: he's like, Hey, he played here before he knows the offense.
- 4:52Speaker 3: This is a new offense, right?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a new offense. And, you know, not one
- 4:57Speaker 1: that he's really accustomed, not a play. I mean, the
- 4:59Speaker 1: only thing he's probably a cuss, a little bit accustomed
- 5:01Speaker 1: to is, is the quarterback, right? I mean, he played
- 5:04Speaker 1: a little bit with hurts, so. Yeah, there's a lot
- 5:07Speaker 1: to learn. There's verbiage. I mean, they're going to have
- 5:10Speaker 1: to really keep things simple to get him on the
- 5:12Speaker 1: field on Monday night.
- 5:13Speaker 2: All right, what do you make of the Kenny Moore move?
- 5:16Speaker 2: I know today Vic Fangio didn't give much on that.
- 5:20Speaker 2: He didn't even acknowledge that they're even signing him or
- 5:23Speaker 2: that he was signed. But what was your initial reaction?
- 5:26Speaker 2: You're like, huh, Kenny Moore.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, not totally surprising given that it hasn't
- 5:32Speaker 1: been a great start for Marcus Epps. He struggled. against
- 5:36Speaker 1: the Titans. You know, Howie has been talking since after
- 5:41Speaker 1: the draft about how he was going to add to
- 5:42Speaker 1: that position, sort of this either safety or nickel position. And,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know, it didn't really add per se anybody there.
- 5:49Speaker 1: They liked that Gushikian kid, but then he wound up
- 5:52Speaker 1: getting claimed off waivers. I thought it was fascinating that
- 5:56Speaker 1: Vic said, it's like Vic basically like pretended not to
- 6:01Speaker 1: know him. The guy's been in the league for nine years,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and he was one of the better nickel corners in
- 6:05Speaker 1: the league. It almost felt like the way he talked
- 6:09Speaker 1: once about Devin White and the way he once talked
- 6:10Speaker 1: about Adoree Jackson, as if, like, I don't know. I
- 6:13Speaker 1: haven't watched tape. This was Howie's decision, so be it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: But after listening to the entire press conference, to me,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I felt that Vic was basically– he is still confident.
- 6:26Speaker 1: He likes Epps. You can tell he likes Epps. He's
- 6:27Speaker 1: not giving up on him. He said he believes he'll
- 6:29Speaker 1: come back from some plays he wants to have back.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He does like Carter. He's starting to play him in
- 6:35Speaker 1: dime more, and he's got kind of Carter in the
- 6:37Speaker 1: back pocket if Epps doesn't play real well. And if
- 6:42Speaker 1: you didn't get what you're looking for out of both,
- 6:44Speaker 1: then there's this Kenny Moore, let's see how he is
- 6:47Speaker 1: after a couple weeks in my defense ramp up. Is
- 6:50Speaker 1: there a role for him? But if you get to
- 6:52Speaker 1: Kenny Moore, you're kind of in that position where you're
- 6:55Speaker 1: just not happy or you've got injuries at that position.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's not a great thing.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because I almost look at it and
- 7:01Speaker 2: it's like, you know, that Howie is, it's almost like
- 7:05Speaker 2: money ball. Like, you need to play this guy. And
- 7:07Speaker 2: he's like, no, I'm playing the other guy. So he
- 7:09Speaker 2: goes out and gets another guy. He's like, now I'm
- 7:12Speaker 2: going to give you another option because the next thing
- 7:14Speaker 2: I'm going to do is cut this guy. So you
- 7:16Speaker 2: either give someone else an option, like you don't have
- 7:18Speaker 2: to play Kenny Moore, but it can't be Epps anymore.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You know, it's like, because a lot of times, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 2: I know they lost Langerboom off the practice squad. You
- 7:28Speaker 2: refill the practice squad with like a younger, you know,
- 7:33Speaker 2: like prospect type of player, right?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Longer beam. Langer boom is a great Michaelism right there.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I love that. Langer boom.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Langer boom.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They lost longer beam, but you know, the contract being
- 7:46Speaker 1: up to 3 million, which means it's not 3 million
- 7:48Speaker 1: is a check. This was a discussion that Howie was
- 7:51Speaker 1: having with Kenny Moore prior to longer beam getting signed up.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But so, so I don't want to put one versus
- 8:02Speaker 1: the other. now maybe losing that guy intensified the discussions,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but the point is they want, how he wanted to
- 8:09Speaker 1: add to this spot. And it'll just be sort of
- 8:12Speaker 1: interesting to say, this is another guy. You can't just
- 8:14Speaker 1: throw him on the field. He doesn't know the defense.
- 8:16Speaker 1: He hasn't been ramped up. He hasn't, you know, he's
- 8:19Speaker 1: on a practice squad anyway. I mean, I don't even
- 8:21Speaker 1: know you can elevate him for special teams. I mean,
- 8:23Speaker 1: you got, you got to get him like ready to play.
- 8:25Speaker 1: He's not in a young, he's not a spring chicken, Mike.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He's his, he's his what? 10th year, ninth year in
- 8:29Speaker 1: the league.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So, yeah, I like this one.
- 8:31Speaker 2: If, if he does end up signing, Do you envision
- 8:34Speaker 2: him more as a safety or he's played nickel? He says,
- 8:37Speaker 2: not sure. I've never laid eyes on him, never watched
- 8:41Speaker 2: him play. I mean, that's a great answer there. I
- 8:44Speaker 2: guess the question would be, does he come in right
- 8:46Speaker 2: away and play safety? Do they want to just make
- 8:49Speaker 2: Cooper DeGene the full-time safety? What do you make of
- 8:54Speaker 2: what the messaging is here?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Vic made it clear he's not taking
- 9:01Speaker 1: Cooper DeGene and moving him to safety full-time. He's the nickelback, okay?
- 9:07Speaker 1: So if he's going to play Cooper at nickelback and
- 9:11Speaker 1: he's not happy with Epps at safety in a week
- 9:14Speaker 1: or two more, then now you're looking at Michael Carter
- 9:16Speaker 1: in that spot and then perhaps Kenny Moore by that
- 9:21Speaker 1: point being next man up at that safety nickel hybrid position.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so I was going to say, do you think
- 9:29Speaker 2: they want to get Dejean back to the role that
- 9:33Speaker 2: he was in before? No.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I don't think Kenny Moore is going to be in
- 9:39Speaker 1: four weeks. I don't think Kenny Moore is going to
- 9:41Speaker 1: be your starting nickelback and Cooper DeGene is going to
- 9:44Speaker 1: be your full-time safety or outside corner unless things go
- 9:47Speaker 1: terribly wrong for the Eagles.
- 9:49Speaker 3: That's right.
- 9:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Well, obviously, those are the two big signings. You got Ertz.
- 9:55Speaker 3: We'll see if he plays. And Kenny Moore, we'll see
- 9:57Speaker 3: what ends up happening there. You're right.
- 9:59Speaker 2: He did you know, he was asked point blank, do
- 10:01Speaker 2: you consider moving Cooper to full-time safety? He said no.
- 10:05Speaker 2: What about Jonathan Grenard? What is the feeling about him
- 10:08Speaker 2: and his availability for Monday night?
- 10:11Speaker 1: So, what Adam and I have been talking about on
- 10:14Speaker 1: Inside the Birds for a while is– to not just
- 10:17Speaker 1: look at the Grenard injury as an injury that keeps
- 10:20Speaker 1: you on the sideline. And when you're healthy, you get
- 10:22Speaker 1: back because we've noted that, and this is just talking
- 10:25Speaker 1: with a lot of trainers, coaches, players have had the injury.
- 10:28Speaker 1: The pec injury is a difficult one because it not
- 10:31Speaker 1: only disallows you from weightlifting. Obviously you're not, hitting the
- 10:37Speaker 1: weights if you have an injured pec, right? At least
- 10:38Speaker 1: the upper body weights, especially. But also there's a lot
- 10:41Speaker 1: of conditioning, running, jogging, that your chest is involved with
- 10:46Speaker 1: that is very difficult to do if you have a
- 10:48Speaker 1: pec injury. So as Vic confirmed today, he said, don't
- 10:52Speaker 1: just look at this as an injury. Look at it
- 10:54Speaker 1: as an injury and a lack of conditioning. This guy
- 10:57Speaker 1: has not had a full NFL practice since last year.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That's a long time. So I think tomorrow is a
- 11:06Speaker 1: very important day, Thursday. It's the first injury report of
- 11:09Speaker 1: the week, and we'll see if he has been able
- 11:12Speaker 1: to graduate from limited participant to full participant.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and people forget, Jeff, like he was signed to
- 11:21Speaker 2: a $ 100 million deal. Like they're missing the pass rush
- 11:24Speaker 2: is lacking because he's not out there.
- 11:26Speaker 1: The Eagles have one of the highest pressure rates in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the NFL, I think top five, but one of the
- 11:34Speaker 1: lowest– sack per pass attempt rates in the NFL. They
- 11:39Speaker 1: are not finishing. They're getting pressure. They're not finishing. Grenard
- 11:44Speaker 1: has proven throughout his career he's a finisher. He gets sacks.
- 11:46Speaker 1: He's a double-digit sack guy when he's healthy. And they're
- 11:50Speaker 1: missing that right now.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So Fangio today said he's not ready for a full workload.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So when he comes back, it's not like you should
- 11:57Speaker 2: anticipate he's going to go out there and play 75
- 12:00Speaker 2: snaps and be all.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Over the place.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Rotational pass rusher. which is better than nothing, but still,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know, you need more, but at the moment you
- 12:09Speaker 1: got to get what you can get.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah. No. And listen, I'm interested to see what he
- 12:14Speaker 2: brings to the table, how they use him. Who's playing
- 12:17Speaker 2: time will be affected by this?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Maybe a bikini, a bikini a little bit, or maybe
- 12:25Speaker 1: everybody just takes a few less. Now, again, what are we,
- 12:28Speaker 1: what are we, how many snaps are we talking about
- 12:30Speaker 1: for the guy? If there's, 55 snaps by the Bears
- 12:34Speaker 1: on Monday. Offensive snaps, right? Are we talking about maybe
- 12:39Speaker 1: him getting 10, which is like 20% of the game, 15?
- 12:44Speaker 1: So could you take three away from Nolan and three
- 12:49Speaker 1: away from Jalex and three away from Ebikedi? And I
- 12:51Speaker 1: know Epinesa's played a few, too. You'll find it. They'll
- 12:55Speaker 1: have no issue finding that.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yeah, because I don't know which guy so far to you, Jeff,
- 13:00Speaker 2: has made more of an impact.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Smith or Hunt?
- 13:04Speaker 1: It's close. Hunt has a higher pressure rate right now
- 13:07Speaker 1: than Smith, but they're both pretty high. But, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Smith has the sack. Hunt doesn't. It's a good question, Mike. Very, very,
- 13:17Speaker 1: very interesting to see where they– do they play– do
- 13:19Speaker 1: they try to move somebody inside? But they're getting really
- 13:22Speaker 1: good production from Ojomo right now. You know, the silent
- 13:25Speaker 1: story right now is that Moro Ojomo– I wrote about
- 13:28Speaker 1: this today on Philly Voice– Mauro Jomo has almost four
- 13:32Speaker 1: times as many pass rush snaps as Jordan Davis right now.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I mean, they gave Jordan Davis the big extension. They
- 13:41Speaker 1: did not give one or at least couldn't agree to
- 13:43Speaker 1: one with Jomo, who's probably going to walk in the offseason.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But if you look at the snap share on pass
- 13:51Speaker 1: rushing downs, it overwhelmingly is favoring Mauro Jomo. In fact,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I have it here right in front of me.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Against Tennessee.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I think you can make an argument that Ojomo is
- 14:04Speaker 2: going to get the next Milton Williams type of deal.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Possible, but my point is it's not just pass rush snaps.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Right now, Jomo has played 75% of the total defense
- 14:15Speaker 1: while Davis has played 47%. And you've seen Jomo in
- 14:19Speaker 1: two straight weeks come up with some really big run stops.
- 14:22Speaker 1: He's becoming a good run defender as well. But they
- 14:26Speaker 1: already chose to give Jordan Davis the money, which is fine.
- 14:31Speaker 1: But they said when they did it because they thought
- 14:33Speaker 1: he was an improved pass rusher, but they're not putting
- 14:35Speaker 1: him on the field in pass rushing snaps. So, I mean,
- 14:39Speaker 1: the numbers against Tennessee were Morrow and Jomo had 21
- 14:41Speaker 1: pass rushes, and Jordan Davis had four, I believe it was.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you what.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Six.
- 14:49Speaker 1: 21 to six.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Okay. Well, Jomo has been maybe the best of the three.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I don't disagree.
- 14:57Speaker 2: You know, he's probably been of the three defensive tackles
- 15:01Speaker 2: who get the most time. There was a question asked today.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It was Javis.
- 15:05Speaker 2: You got two interior pass rushers, Carter and Ojomo. Is
- 15:08Speaker 2: there have to be an emphasis on maybe to give
- 15:11Speaker 2: Davis more opportunities or do you not worry about that?
- 15:15Speaker 2: At this point, it's almost like, why am I taking
- 15:17Speaker 2: Ojomo off the field?
- 15:19Speaker 1: There you go. Why are you taking Ojomo off the field?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Give me something that worries you about the Bears in
- 15:25Speaker 2: this matchup.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Well, they can run the ball as well as anybody
- 15:28Speaker 1: out of 11 personnel, out of 12 personnel, out of shotgun,
- 15:31Speaker 1: under center, um, And when you are on your backup quarterback,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and we've seen the Eagles do this for decades, right?
- 15:38Speaker 1: But yet you play good defense and you run the ball.
- 15:41Speaker 1: All of the Bears don't have a great defense, so
- 15:42Speaker 1: that should be their concern. But if they can control
- 15:45Speaker 1: the clock and the tempo of the game by establishing
- 15:49Speaker 1: the run the way that they do and working play
- 15:51Speaker 1: action off that to set up some easier connections, whether
- 15:55Speaker 1: it's for Bajan or whether if it's for Case Keenum,
- 15:58Speaker 1: that would be the one. I mean, we saw it
- 15:59Speaker 1: last year. The Eagles got steamrolled in the run game.
- 16:03Speaker 1: it by the bears now we said well jalen carter
- 16:06Speaker 1: was dealing with some shoulder injuries as if one person
- 16:09Speaker 1: on out of the 11 is only responsible for i
- 16:11Speaker 1: mean the whole run defense sucked let's be fair uh
- 16:14Speaker 1: and now jalen carter is dealing with a wrist injury
- 16:16Speaker 1: uh that's in a cast so that suggests to me
- 16:19Speaker 1: there's probably a broken bone there.
- 16:20Speaker 2: The game they played against the bears last year was
- 16:23Speaker 2: the one game they got physically just beat up manhandled
- 16:27Speaker 2: absolutely manhandled yes and manunga and Let me ask your opinion.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I actually thought the Giants game, the first Giants game
- 16:36Speaker 1: that got manhandled too.
- 16:37Speaker 3: That one too, yes.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I want to get your opinion on this because I
- 16:42Speaker 2: was on a Chicago show earlier today and they're talking
- 16:47Speaker 2: about the quarterback problems they have there. that they might
- 16:50Speaker 2: need to go to Case Keenum, which I said, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 2: Vic Fangio might rather see the younger quarterback, and, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 2: he gives it. At least Case Keenum's a veteran player
- 16:59Speaker 2: who maybe has seen some of the Fangio stuff, because
- 17:04Speaker 2: I'm assuming neither one of these quarterbacks would be asked
- 17:07Speaker 2: to do a whole heck of a lot. Just don't
- 17:09Speaker 2: make a mistake.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Yeah. It's funny because that's sort of like the rationalizing
- 17:13Speaker 1: yourself on why the number three might be a little
- 17:15Speaker 1: better than the number two, which is exactly what it
- 17:16Speaker 1: feels like it's happened here in Philadelphia with Dalton and McKee.
- 17:20Speaker 1: But I would say that Bears really, really liked Bajan.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I mean, he when he had obviously he's not played
- 17:27Speaker 1: in a ton of big games or starts, but he
- 17:29Speaker 1: did have to start a couple of years ago when
- 17:32Speaker 1: Williams was hurt. But they really they give him extension.
- 17:35Speaker 1: They really like what he can do. So I think
- 17:38Speaker 1: if you gave them, I think on the outside would
- 17:41Speaker 1: do what you do, rationalize why the veteran who's won
- 17:43Speaker 1: a few games in this league and has been to
- 17:45Speaker 1: a conference championship game would be a better option against
- 17:49Speaker 1: the Eagles in their defense. But they like Bajent for
- 17:51Speaker 1: a reason.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, we'll see what ends up happening there. Obviously,
- 17:56Speaker 2: not a great situation, a quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
- 17:59Speaker 2: As you put it, not a great defense for the
- 18:01Speaker 2: Chicago Bears, but they can run the ball. Menunga, I
- 18:04Speaker 2: just blasted you last year. That was a physical beating
- 18:08Speaker 2: on Black Friday, and these two teams will go at
- 18:10Speaker 2: it again on Monday night. You can check out the
- 18:12Speaker 2: Inside the Birds podcast on all podcasting platforms. Jeff Mosher
- 18:16Speaker 2: and the crew are back for football at 4, of course,
